This place is the first on our list for weekend getaway. Lovely gardens, playground for the kids, lovely cafe in a green house. The Eltham Palace (house) is a great place to visit as well. But we've been there 10 or more times, so we mostly come for a walk in the garden. And I'm in love with rotang chairs and tables outside in the garden. We always take a chance to seat and enjoy this place.

Lovely art deco mansion. Easy and relaxing to visit. Nice grounds and you are able to wander through the mansion taking your time. Some of the rooms are in average condition but nice to see it open for the public. Run by English Heritage.

Really beautiful place to visit during the festive season. Great for families with young children under 10 years old. Lots to see and food stalls too. Hot chocolate and hot dogs 🌭 sold for a treat. You can even get giant marshmallows to toast on an open fire. Fun fair too but small scale. Highly recommended if in the Eltham area.

We have recently visited Eltham Palace Gardens. They have been fabulously transformed for the annual Enchanted event. The staff were friendly, professional and attentive. There were stalls with some snacks and drinks and you could toast your marshmallow as well :) Very well organised and absolutely amazing experience!

Enchanted at Eltham Palace was magical. The grounds were lit up beautifully. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was a great Christmassy experience. Never visited before but will come back to visit the buildings and grounds during the daytime.

I went to view Enchanted Events with family at the Palace during the christmas period. It was beautifully lit and colourful. There was many opportunities to take pics and the path was one way so no chance of getting lost. Hot and cold food was available to buy 😋 at reasonable price.

Beautiful enhanced experience at Eltham Palace at the moment. All in a festive vibe; mince pies, mulled wine, hot chocolate and even giant mashmallows for toasting... with a lovely surprise at the end of the trail. The lighting could have been even more splendid with special effects on the Palace itself. Well worth a romatic/family visit.

One of the great houses right in London. It’s pretty unique as it has 1940’s style of decor inside, Tudor’s hall and Roman bathroom… lovely mote and ground for an afternoon stroll. Great for a family day out. There is a free parking for member or £3 for a day. Cafe on site, but you can bring your own picnic. Activities through out the day. There is a play park for the children and the cafe is right next to it.

Great place to visit. So much history. Fab grounds and a view of the city too. Kids had a great time exploring

Eltham Palace is amazing. A beautiful building mixing old and new. The history is fascinating. The staff are helpful and the audio guide is very good. There are lovely gardens and a mote, and a play area for children, and a nice cafe.

Simply fascinating! Not your usual palace. The volunteers and staff are simply amazing and they offer lots of information and fascinating stories and facts. Virginia and Stephen Courtald renovated the Great Hall of the medieval royal palace and added an art deco extension. Virginia was a character: a tattooed, divorced foreigner. She had a pet lemur and several dogs.

What a place!
Wonderful to see all the design features here. Didn't manage to walk around the gardens too much as it was heavily raining.

We visited for Enchanted Eltham which was on over the Christmas holidays. It was a very colourful evening. The gardens and trees beautifully illuminated. Well worth a visit anyway but this was special.

If you like Art Deco home furnishings with a few other bits like a medieval hall, gardens, and tea room it’s great. However I personally didn’t care for the furnishings (felt a little boring and not to opulent), and would’ve liked more history of the historical palace that was here, and slightly more direction on where to wander to sighing the house as a little maze-like in places. Friendly staff though.
D. T.
Enchanted Eltham Lights. Yes lovely lights but you have to find a place to park in the streets around. All double yellow. Nice to have seen but will try Crystal Palace next year
K. B.
Great English Heritage property that is a mix of medieval and art deco and WW2. It is easy to reach by public transport and the moat and gardens are good for exploring and have great views of the London skyline. It also has a small shop and a cafe.
G. R.
Beautiful house and grounds. If you tour the house, definitely take the free audio tour as it us really informative.

Lovely place.Palace which became a family home.Very different to the English heritage sites we usually visit. Lots of guides to answer questions or give you information. Two places to eat,one by car park and one in the palace. They are both quite small with a limited menu.We had pasta of the day. There's a good play area near the cafe by the car park. The gardens are lovely to walk around with plenty of benches to sit on for a while to take in the surroundings.
When we went yesterday,English heritage had an event on.It was 1940's day out. There were a few characters dressed up who did activities throughout the day such as semaphore, singing and dancing, and UXB's!!!! The day's entertainment finished with a "concert " in the great hall.We had a great day!
D.
Tranquil and serene. A location which makes you forget the hustle and bustle of the surround South East London area.
Fantastic gardens with even more impressive buildings to enter to view amazing designs of the times. The times being an amazing designed art deco house next to a medieval banquet hall.
Visit at Christmas for a walk through the grounds, lit up with a multitude of light displays.
Visit on the summer for the special events which is often a Medieval Jousting competition.
P. S.
Nice place. Very beautiful view. You can go with kids. But there are three stairs, so it will be inconvenient with a baby carriage

I came here when conditions were perfect. It was a warm and very bright late September day, it was quiet and I had never been before. It took me a couple of hours to get here by public transport and so it had to be excellent to give me a return on my investment. I was delighted by the place. The gardens are very pretty and kept in immaculate condition. They are really photogenic. The house, with its sumptious1930's Art Deco design and its Mediaeval Hall is interesting. I came away well informed and pleased with decision to visit this treasure.

Amazing place. I'm surprised I've never discovered this before. Lovely grounds & so much history inside the building. The eating place was very nice too... Surprisingly as I'm usually disappointed at these places. Wonderful helpful friendly staff. Great childrens play area. Fair sized car park & overflow parking too.
All in all a great day
J. G.
Amazing views. Great gardens for a walk and a fantastic piece of history totally worthy. For anyone living in the Greenwich area I definitely recommend a visit! Their own cafe is also good with sweet treats and drinks (lovely staff)...
All around a day well spent...

Stunning art deco house with more than a few surprises. The garden's are pretty and interesting with huge carp begging for food! . Well worth a visit.
F. B.
We have visited the Christmas lights and it is truly beautiful! Really like an enchanting forest. Absolutely loved it!
M.
It is recommended to read some information about the place before your visit to avoid disappointment. Not much left from the medieval times or renaissance. The building itself and almost all furniture are art deco era.
We visited in November and the extended gardens were not accessible
I. C.
Fantastic place to visit especially if you like Art Deco. Check out the truly iconic entrance hall especially. The grounds are wonderful. We'll woth a vist
J. B.
Smashing visit, friendly and helpful staff, house is amazing inside and out. Not too busy either and easy to find. Enjoy the photos.

Enchanting, the grounds of Eltham Palace are very lovely to walk around most times of the year, but the light display brought it into a completely different perspective. My granddaughter's age 6 & 8 yes, thought it was like a fairy tale, they completely believed that there were fairies about. Thoroughly enjoyable and worth the cost of the tickets.
A. D.
Went there for the moonlight trail and definitely loved it! The installations were very beautiful and picturesque, can also grab dinner in a small cafe with roast menu, was very warm and cozy. Not a lot of people by the trail and people do observe social distancing. Greatly recommend!
E. H.
The house is wonderful, those of you who are Hercule Poirot fans will recognise some of the rooms, the gardens are beautiful.
i.
Beautiful well cared for gardens. Superb medieval great Hall and all the art deco 30's mansion you could wish for. Friendly staff too.
K. S.
First visit for two years and I must say vast improvement in the Palace grounds.Full of colour.Well done gardeners ! The Palace itself really comes to life with the help of an audio guide readily available.Plenty of staff in attendance for additional info.Good day out save not being able to sit inside the cafe area owing to a private function taking place.Outside therefore fighting off aggressive wasps !
I. “. L.
Fantastic Palace to visit with family and friends. Place kept absolutely spotless and all the amenities were also kept really well. Had a really enjoyable day and would recommend.
R. P.
Interesting mix of fading art deco luxury and medieval totally decayed palace. Birthplace of kings and queens. Nice gardens.
D. B.
Amazing modernist home but built around the remains of a medieval palace including a wonderful great home. Great place to take kids - lots for them to see and do. Nice gardens. Cafe is ok as well. If you use public transport there is a walk from the local rail stations.
M. D.
This is a magical place, where medieval meets 1930s Art Deco. The history is as glamorous as the building. Don’t miss the ladder and trapdoor for their pet, and the super gold bathroom. Favourite room has to be the entrance hall, used for mega parties. I wish we were allowed one now, on many levels!
J. M.
Fantastic fun, even in the rain. Lovely staff helped make it a great family trip. Highly recommend a visit
S. N.
Lovely grounds and great wizards of once trail for the half term. Friendly, helpful staff and the stamp trail kept the little people engaged! We will definitely be back in spring.

Beautiful Place to Visit, Ideal for anyone with Family or Couple.

A nice detour while visiting london. The journey is worth it. The estate is very beautiful inside and out.
M. W.
Although the house was still shut on our visit due to Covid we still had a lovely few hours walking around the grounds and taking in the views. The kids play area with coffee shop and picnic tables is great too. We will go back again when the house is open.
B. T.
Enchanted at Eltham Palace - fantastic experience even on a cold and slightly damp evening. Highly recommended.
K. U.
Really well maintained English Heritage property. Guides were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Great cafe and inside seating area also. Have to pay for car park on top of entry fee if you aren't a member.
K. F.
Only found out about this place through our English Heritage membership and honestly can’t believe we hadn’t heard of it before! Absolutely beautiful grounds and building in absolutely pristine condition. Would recommend this to anyone visiting the Greenwich area as a must see when there.
S. P. (.
An amazing place full of fascinating history, the combination of medieval Palace and personal home makes for an interesting day out, look out for one of the first ever showers! (Only cold water mind you) and of course keep your eyes open for Mah-jong the ring tailed lemur
A. E.
Wonderful historic building with fascinating history in beautiful grounds. Liked the cafe food very much although the tables are very sticky and probably haven't been cleaned properly in a long time.
E. T.
What an amazing place to visit especially with all the light installations there!
K. F.
Expensive for a family visit. Half term activity for children rather mundane & disappointing. EH could do so much more for all types of visitors at little cost. Use some imagination! It's a beautiful place but poorly interpreted. The video aimed at adults. Which is ok but you also need to look at younger age groups. In the Great Hall there could be much more interpretation as to how it used to be in the late 1400s!
D. M.
Very interesting place to visit. Brings art deco and the 1930s to life. Found the audio guide very informative. Left me wanting to find out more about the amazing couple whose vision this marvelous home was.
Note, £3 for the car park charged on all days.
i. m.
Excellent enchanted lights at Eltham Palace. Kids loved it, especially roasting giant marshmallows over the fire pit. Little bit of queuing at times but moves quickly, helped by the staff and volunteers. You have to park around the local area, but there is parking is for blue badge holders only in main car park but you can phone to book space which can be found clearly on website by clicking the enchanted FAQs page. Had a fab visit and looking to going again next year.
G. M.
Hefty entry fee is not really justified in this English Heritage property which is a time capsule of 1930s Upper class living. The Palace was rescued from ruin by the Courtauld family but very little remains of the original building which was once the Royal family residence of countless monarchs dating back to the fourteenth century. There is a lovely moat and arched Bridge and a sunken rose garden.
N. M.
We went for the Christmas lights one evening and it was wonderful! We didn't realise there was no parking though so that was a bit stressful and if we'd known there was food places and fair ground rides at the end we would have better prepared for being out even longer. A really lovely evening none the less but with more information we definitely would have stayed longer into the evening. We'll come again if they do it next year!
N. M.
Beautiful Palace for the family to visit. Different to others out there because of its Art Deco design. Lovely garden, pond and ground to walk about. Kids can also enjoy playing on the wooden recreation ground and parents can have a great coffee in the coffee shop terrace. Perfect day out!
J. M.
A new find for me whilst looking for days out, we decided to visit this palace. I've always loved the Tudor period so was a little sad to see the 1930s renovations but it was an interesting and educational visit all the same. The exterior and the gardens were stunning, with a cafe and shop on site. There were froendly and knowledgeable volunteers dotted around, some controlling the flow of people onto certain rooms to maintain social distancing. I think, given the size of the building, I expect to see more of it open, and was slightly let down when we found ourselves at the exit, but I'd would still recommend this as a day out.
a. b.
A gorgeous royal estate steeped in history from norman times through to the 20th century.
With the imposing great hall and its mixed use to the fusion of modernist architecture concealing an iconic art deco interior with every modern convenience imaginable of the time. You'll discover the lively millionaire's decadent entertaining and the military use before preservation.
Sumptuous and elegant wooden walls with marquetry to the sublime marbles used throughout greet you at every turn. Then note the more utilitarian corridors of the servants quarters and kitchens.
The great hall's timber roof, recreated to be as impressively imposing as it was originally is something to enjoy on your visit.
Look for Lemurs throughout!

Been here twice and we still enjoyed our time. Friendly and helpful staff. Car parking isn’t huge. This is a place you could spend a half day in and have lunch.
We went during half term and caught some story tellers in the great hall. They were brilliant and our 6 year old son loved them. There was also a chance to do some jousting at targets that he liked as well. The play area is also a welcome change from touring the palace.
The palace itself is well maintained. The Art Deco house is worth seeing. There are some dress up opportunities for children as well.
Cafe have some good selections to choose from. Kids lunch bag is under £5 and you get a sandwich, a package of crisps, bag of raisins, a big jammy cookie and a pack of colouring crayons. We had lunch there and it was busy, but I have to say that service was still very slow.
We would come back in the summer and check out the garden grounds. If you plan to visit during winter season then definitely wear wellies or waterproof clothing. Tickets to enter is pricey £15 but we were given an membership card as a gift so we took advantage of this which is worth it.
F. D.
Absolutely stunning place. Both the house and gardens are beautiful. Staff and volunteers are absolutely brilliant. Although I am rather jealous of the irises in their pond and the plant selection was a little too tempting!
J. S.
Amazing place to go for a unique experience. The grounds were beautifully kept. Walking around the gardens was peaceful and stunning; it was quite an experience to walk where queens and kings used to walk on a regular basis.
The inside was a great experience to see what it was like in a castle that was both updated in relatively modern times but that also kept so many aspects of its historical roots.
The staff was particularly helpful, friendly, and informative here. When asking any questions, they were able to answer succinctly and accurately about even the history of how the grounds became a part of England’s historical society.
Amazing and unique experience!
E. W.
Wow! What an incredible experience! You can spend well over 20-40 minutes walking through the garden alone! The hall is lovely, but the inside of the house is absolutely breathtaking, so well kept in absolutely gorgeous condition! Well worth the money and the visit!
a. b.
The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Frances the volunteer guide gave an informative talk on the history of the houses royal history. Food in the cafe was a bit expensive though, but plenty of space to bring a picnic and separate area for kids to play.
M. P.
Beautiful Art Deco building with many unique & beautifully preserved features. Unfortunately they have covered the parquet floor in the main entrance & (during Covid) closed off a few rooms like the Library & the Gallery above the main hall & put away many of the period items (vases, plates, pics..)..bit still lovely & absolutely worth a visit.
S. E. J.
Wonderful light show and walk. Grandkids loved it.
J. K.
Beautiful historical building, really knowledgable, helpful and friendly staff. Amazing gardens, beautifully maintained. The little cafe sells delicious cakes. Little gift shop selling all sorts of lovely treats and some good ideas for Christmas. Worth buying a membership so you can go there any time plus you'd be financially supporting the trust to keep it running for years to come. Xx
T. L.
As part of the heritage membership you can get free entry, only £55 per person as a couple for unlimited access to all sites all year. Came here as it is local and was amazed with the lovely gardens and building work. A tour inside the house is interesting and you are guided with mini phones and audio.
There's garden furniture outside the house for those summer days, free to use and can bring your own snacks
L.
Simply stunning!! What a beautiful house and surrounding grounds which we walked around in awe, enjoying the peacefulness and gorgeousness of it all. Not overly crowded, it was a joy to to be there and take it all in. From the magnificent house to the gentle flowing waters, it was simply perfect.
There is a cafe and a shop along with a small children's play area, which the children seem to enjoy.
I'm looking forward to visiting again.
G. E.
Great for kids to run around the beautiful grounds. Highlights are carp spotting in the moat. There is large outdoor play area but could do with some extra/updated equipment these days. Great little cafe too.
S. B.
Beautiful venue that is so rich in history.
It is just a shame it is so poorly lit.
In the dark (following an event) returning to the car park it is pitch black - this is such a wasted opportunity to showcase the amazing gardens, bridges & stream to visitors passing by.
*Picture one was taken with my flash on.
**Pictures two & three show the same path in visual reality - it is pitch black, not signposted & is incredibly intimidating. TAKE A TORCH!
P. M.
The park behind here is a hidden gem. Skyline of London and a field full of horses. Take a first right turning before reaching the Palace and go left.. Would recommend going to see the sunset. The Palace itself seems to only be open during the autumn and winter months, seems lovely to go and see.
L. R.
A lovely Tudor style hunting lodge/mansion in Eltham.
Picturesque grounds , history and events.
Food and play facilities in thr grounds.
Family friendly.
Recommended.

What an amazing place to come for a look around! At the time of writing (early April 2021) only the grounds are open due to COVID-19 restrictions. There is plenty of space to have a good walk around, have a picnic (lots of seating provided), and the children’s play area is open too. Toilet facilities are available, but only 1 person per bathroom, so a bit of a queue.
There is ample parking available on two separate car parks. This is free for English Heritage members, or £3 for non-members. Ticket machines take coins, cards and contactless payments (which is handy!)
Staff are friendly and helpful and put me at ease regarding the COVID-19 restrictions. There were hand sanitiser points dotted around the gardens (but the main building, etc), and whilst the cafe was closed inside you could still get a coffee or a hot snack to takeaway - which was lovely on a cold day!
The gardens are beautifully maintained and whilst the weather has meant unpredictable blooming so far, the blossom trees look lovely - especially over the moat.
C. W.
Beautiful grounds, hidden gem. Lots of greenery, decent cafe and play area for younger children too.
K. S.
Truly beautiful and charming place inside and out. And has played its part in English history. Its a amazing place to visit and admire the workmanship that's been involved over the years but they do also have many different events held here throughout the year. From music and wedding fairs to medieval jousting. But my favourite has to be the enchanted garden in December. A Magical trip around the grounds which has been beautifully lit up with thousands of lights. Theres even a talking tree. Hot drinks and food is available in the barn and marshmallows for toasting. Really gets you into the Christmas spirit. Fairly priced. 2 tours a night. Staff friendly and helpful.
A. S.
Really enjoyed my visit here. You will find a restored medieval castle and a manor built in Art Deco style in 1930s - both very impressive. The territory around is very well maintained and offers great opportunity for picnics as well as just very enjoyable walking. Would love to come here again.

(Please note this info is specific to August 2020)
Eltham Palace has reopened! We are locals and had never got round to going. The gardens were open for some of lockdown but as of this weekend you can now visit most of the palace with a face covering (just a few smaller rooms and interactive exhibits are still closed). There is a one-way system round the entire site but with room to roam and sit in the garden areas.
Pre-booking tickets is required (you choose a set arrival time but you can stay as long as you like. Palace open 11am-4pm and gardens til 5) and there are limited numbers allowed in the palace at any time, so there can be a queue. Weekends are more popular so if you want it quiet a weekday is a better bet, according to the guides.
The shop and cafe (packaged sandwiches, pastries, soup, crisps and drinks) are open but there is no indoor seating and face coverings are required inside.
The grounds are stunning and so is the house. We loved learning about the eccentric Courtaulds and seeing the perfectly recreated /conserved 1930s design. The medieval Great Hall was also fascinating and the guides were friendly and enthusiastic. There is so much history at Eltham including Henry VIII spending much of his childhood there!
We spent about 3.5hrs there in total, including queues for the Palace, short waits for some smaller spaces inside, and wandering in the grounds.
M. K.
Wonderful Palace to visit and the gardens are truly beautiful. Great play area for the kids whilst you sit back and enjoy a cuppa.
M. R.
A very interesting place with quite a chequered past. The remain of the old hall is stunning, whereas the newer Italianate part is a matter of taste, a bit like Grand Designs. The gardens are lovely, and the walk round the buildings is well worth doing. We were glad we finally came to visit.
P.
Beautiful building with a mix through the ages of styles from medieval, tudor to Art deco. great gardens , lovely views of London we spent a great afternoon there. Being a member has its benefits. Free parking, free entry, max points today loved it
H. j. F.
A unique and special opportunity to step back into the world of the Courtauld family home. Enjoy the beautiful stylistically furnished home & the stunning gardens, with the mediaeval great hall which saw many royals assemble here.
B. V.
Eltham Palace certainly has alluring qualities. One of its most interesting aspects is its art deco interior which belies the significant medieval origins of the place itself. The great hall and English Heritage's explanations quickly set this right, but it makes the basis of a peculiar blend of eras and interests in a heritage site visit. As for the art deco grandeur, we found some of it looks a bit dilapidated or barren, which we weren't expecting. The main bedrooms entrance hall, library, and parlour mainly steal the show. Initially the place comes across more as a hotel and much is made of the residence's key purpose of entertaining. We felt it would have been welcome to have a more critical introduction to the couple responsible for the splendour and eccentricity. As so often, one is faced with the end result of a luxurious lifestyle that hardly reflects anything approaching normality. There are interesting stories about the refurbishment of the estate and it's buildings and there are lavish gardens around, modifying the original historical purpose of the grounds (e.g. moats). In this sense there is much to explore, including the elaborate basement WWII hideout. Again, some context is missing in explaining the circumstances of the couple's departure and the fortunes of the place thereafter. The facilities include a parking, playground, cafe, and garden/EH shop. Ultimately, it's worth a visit, especially if you're already and EH member.
A. J.
Lovely place, safe set up, one way distancing observed. Gardens were open only but the weather was fantastic. Took my friend there for a birthday visit. Recommend.
d. j.
Delightful 'palace' to visit. The remains of a medieval hall, attached to a Deco mansion. In fantastic condition with a great multimedia guide. Gardens are beautiful with a lovely view over London. Well worth the trip and short walk up the hill.
M. K.
Beautiful house and grounds. No problem parking.
M. V.
It ok.... Went to the enchanted night time one.
D. C.
Would definitely recommend you visit the light show at Christmas. Brilliant show and a nice walk around the gardens.
After we popped into the cafe for a coffee and cake. Just perfect. Staff were very helpful
Only issue is car parking. It's a nightmare
S. C.
A very interesting morning. Good to see this 'monument ' to the 1930s suspended in animation juxtaposition to its very old past.
Would recommend a view
D. P.
Spectacular merging of medieval and 1930s. Beautiful gardens!
J. F.
We were extremely impressed by the magical enchanted light display. It was fantastic. The staff and service were second to none. We thoroughly recommend people visiting before Christmas.
M. O.
This is the first time that I have visited Eltham Palace and it was a fantastic experience and I can say it will not be my last.
The buildings and the garden were excellent, the staff were very friendly. The electronic tour guide was really good. Highly recommend for anyone to go visit the fantastic piece of London history.
I. W.
Just an amazing place to visit. From the gardens to the Tudor Hall to and Art Deco interior house. It's a great visit. History about Henry VII's childhood (he was brought up in Eltham Palace) to the amazing Courtaulds who built the house. Highly recommended!
C. D.
Amazing palace and beautiful gardens. Highly recommended.
G. E.
Very nice manor house dating back to 1400's Beautiful gardens with a moat containing large carp. Cafe set in the gardens with a firepit for toasting your marshmallows. Quite a good play area for children with lots of things for them to climb on.
S. H.
Intended to visit ever since hearing of it; v glad I eventually made the trip - it’s a breath of fresh air both in terms of the Courtauld building’s Art Deco style and as an awesome green space well-within the M25.
S.
Stunning interior with Art Deco centrepiece that is truly film set design in its proportions and opulence.
Aside from the main entrance lobby and smaller sub rooms the remainder of the property is a little lacking.
The new cafe is okay, but not quick as good as it should be. Overall it’s a great place to visit but is unlikely to fill enough time to be considered for a day out.
P. H.
Lovely house and gardens. Staff we encountered were all very nice and friendly.
Pretty expensive to get in but parking was free and you can take a picnic and spend all day there. There are a few dressing up areas for the children which helps to keep them entertained. There's a play area for the children and lots of picnic tables dotted around.
The cafe is pretty expensive, but I guess it's on a par with other EH properties?
Will be returning but mainly because its 20 minutes from home and I have EH membership.
M. S.
Lovely place! Quite interesting and impressive! I would recommend it to everyone! We will go back there again!
G. D.
Very good place in the area and not only. First of all it's a great open space, good enough for walking with a playground for children. Most important it's the Palace itself. A must to visit place in London, extremely well preserved and maintained. Friendly staff and very helpful. There's a nice pond and ditch with water and fish around the Palace. At this time bookings have to be made online, though during lockdown there's no access in the buildings, you still can stroll on the Palace grounds and have nice time.
C. D.
First time visiting despite living nearby. Lovely walk around the gardens and I enjoyed viewing the house seeing the original great hall and the newer extension full of the 1930s grandeur! I will definitely be going back at Christmas for the enchanted Palace experience.
M. M.
I had a lovely afternoon walking around the grounds and buildings. Staff shared lots of interesting information about the history of this Palace. Definitely worth a visit.

Wonderful place to visit, with lots to see. Inside is a wonderful Art Deco palace with some older historic areas too. Gardens are amazing to see especially in spring/summer.

Magical place.only been in garden but I can't wait till reopen to see amazing artdeco interior
d. c.
Incredible mix of 15/16th century with 20th century Art Deco extensions... great views across London as well! Car park not obvious...
M. C.
Wow full of history character and beauty, and fun for all the family. They have different things going on all year round so check the website.
You can look at the same place twice and see something different each time.
Love the way history still tells its own story.
S. K.
Worth visiting. Audio guide is recommended for details of each room of palace. Garden is beautiful.
T. S.
A really fine example of Art Deco hidden in suburban London. You could just lose yourself in the books while sitting in Great Hall.
The entrance hall ceiling is something you can't miss - made of concrete plaster and round glass windows. Use of similar skylights is noticeable throughout the house.
I strongly recommend visiting all open areas. It might feel a bit pricy at £15 per adult. Perhaps it's the right time to get annual English Heritage card?
And then there is cafe, shop and kids playground - all of which were highly appreciated after a few hours in the house. The kids seem to love the wooden structures to climb on.
Getting there is a doodle by car or public transport - Eltham station is in walking distance and A2 / Southern Circular a few minutes drive.

Nice couple of hours in Eltham Palace . Will go again in the summer as will enjoy the grounds more when it's warm .Well recommended for a family day out .
M. T.
What a lovely way to spend a day out. Only need an 1-2hrs to wonder around in both the house and gardens. Inside is interesting with the modern and old mixed together. The cafe and entrance to the Palace are 5mins walk from the palace garden's and house. You will need to purchase a ticket before entering.
E. M.
Nice modernist place. Most of the palace is walkable and everything can be seen. The bedrooms are amazing!
All the gardens and the pond are also worthwhile.
B. B.
A brilliant day out for the whole family.
Stunning gardens, a moat, a Great Hall from Tudor times, and an amazing Art Deco mansion.
Enjoyed a garden tour with Helen, one of the gardening team, and she was excellent.
Staff and volunteers, though, should make eye contact and smile at visitors when walking around the site; and be a bit friendlier when approached.
Z. S.
This is a hidden gem in Eltham, beautiful palace and garden, breathtaking panoramic views, staff are extremely friendly and welcoming very safe to visit during Covid 19, all the measures are in place for the visitors safety. Would strongly recommend.
A. J.
Went Eltham Palace on a class trip today. The staff were very nice and friendly, very informative on the various rooms inside. The kids loved the rooms that had various dress up gear like the basement with War uniform and Virginia's walk in wardrobe. The grounds is beautiful with various flowers planted. The mout has fishes inside which was probably the highlight as the kids loved to see them racing past them.
P. C.
Visited on a cold November day, was pleasantly surprised at how much time we spent looking around... The interactive guide is really good, but the highlight has to be the English Heritage staff on site, they were all very friendly, approachable and knowledgeable
R. B.
Lovely place for a visit at Christmas time with the night walking, but can be difficult if you are not great on your feet.
d. c.
Incredible mix of 15/16th century with 20th century Art Deco extensions... great views across London as well! Car park not obvious...
J. D.
Fabulous of old and exquisite new. Fabulous views of London too. Well worth a day out. We're coming back.
D. G.
Beautifully restored and maintained, curious gem of out of the way London. A unique and engaging space, that makes a terrific time capsule for a very perticularly point of history. Gratitude to Sue and all of the staff who do a wonderful job of welcoming and sharing the sites history.
T. O.
Great, especially if you have EH membership. The grounds are lovely and well kept and the house is very interesting. Tge half term childrens activities were fun and engaging.
g. m.
Been there for the Art Deco Fair, but definitely worth a visit any time of the year. The palace itself is a gem, and you get to enjoy the beautiful garden and the lovely surroundings. Nice little café as well. Consider becoming member of the National Heritage! Visiting Eltham Palace and the Dover Castle was enough for me to repay for the annual membership.
L. T.
Great day out visiting the palace. On this occasion I went when they were holding a medieval jousting festival - which had jousting, medieval weapons battle, a jester show, falconry and archery. The jousting was intense, the jester had the crowd in deep bellowy laughs, the archery was suspenseful when they got a knight to stand in front of the targets and the falconry was really insightful into training birds. Definitely a fantastic day out for children, too. There was a squared off area where kids could "pretend fight" with swords.
D. D.
an amazing place to visit especially for people who like the Art Deco style of art and architecture, and to learn about 'Jongy' the Coulthards pet lemur who had free reign of the mansion and was by all accounts a very pampered and mischievous pet! Grounds nice to walk round too. Not too far a journey out of central London. Various events on throughout the year
M. B.
One of the best places I have visited in many years the house is cleaned and well maintained with so much to see, although there is no real map of the house so you do end walking around a bit. The gardens are again well presented and maintained, although at the time of my visit the gardens were not in bloom.
s. t.
Enchanted walk. Really pretty. Not 5 stars as there were blank spaces and the refreshments were too close to the beginning.
C. J.
Loved it. Great place to visit. Lovely house and gardens and great if you use the digital tour guide to explain the history of the house. Gardens were lovely as well and the moat was beautiful. Lovely cafe and play area for the kids. Would recommend getting there early to take full advantage of the palace.
M. G.
Lovely few hours is all you need - will definitely be coming back in the Spring/Summer for the gardens!
K. L.
A well preserved Art Deco house on a grand scale with fascinating history. Lovely gardens too. The way the architect brought the then new house to join with the very old palace and hall works seamlessly. The audio guides make for an easy way to tour and provide lots of interesting tidbits about the history of the place and the people who lived and visited there.
M. R.
What took me so long to visit this delightful Art Deco House that was built on site of Eltham Palace. Lots of interesting room settings from that era and absolutely stunning gardens. I especially enjoyed the Tulip Festival displays. Lovely cafe with good quality snacks and meals indoor or outdoors. Children will enjoy the large play area. Good range of souvenirs in gift shop and quite a lot of the gardens, cafe, Shop and ground floor of House accessible to those with disabilities.
K. S.
A interesting and unique former royal palace with a mixture of medieval and art deco interiors. Loved the quirkiness of the building, especially how it was purposely built to accommodate the family’s pet lemur.
The audioguide was engaging and informative.
The whole tour probably takes around 90 minutes; a little bit longer if you go around the garden.
I would have given this place 4 stars due to price -£17.50 with gift aid for an adult - which is ridiculously expensive; however, we managed to use the 2 for the price of 1 offer if you arrive by rail; just download the voucher from the internet and produce your rail tickets at the ticket desk (the offer is not valid on event days, bank holidays or with an Oyster card).
O. S.
Very nice place to visit. For English Heritage members it's free.
N. S.
Lovely Palace, fusion of art deco and medieval!
M. C.
Wow full of history character and beauty, and fun for all the family. They have different things going on all year round so check the website.
You can look at the same place twice and see something different each time.
Love the way history still tells its own story.
S. K.
Elham Palace is very beautiful palace with big and different gardens. It also has children's playground and a cafe. There is a parking area for visitors with the car. Moreover, palace is the perfect place to visit with family. Because it has dressing up rooms, where not only kids but also adults can try on clothing. All in all, it is a must visit place. I highly recommend it.
N. B.
Worth a visit if you enjoy art deco interiors. This is nicely preserved and quirky but has the atmosphere of an old hotel.
The gardens are well maintained but frankly quite dull and without much horticultural development.
I. W.
An art deco and historical masterpiece. Easy access, good public transport links and a well organised restaurant. Some issues with social distancing but not the fault of the staff. Charming. A lovely day out. Recommended.
F. M.
I only saw the gardens at night because we went to see the Christmas lights which were absolutely beautiful!! Well worth a visit next year. In fact it was so good, we joined English Heritage.
M. N.
A phenomenal location, stunning palace and gardens. A medieval castle whose interior was redecorated with lavish art deco furniture. An absolute gem at a stone's throw from London!
T. G.
Only recently heard of Eltham Palace but on visiting it has become my favourite English Heritage site
It really is a must visit combining Tudor with 1930's Art Deco architecture and design in one place
Weird, unusual and amazing all describe it well
K. F.
Starting off by saying that the buildings and grounds are beautiful. The Gardening team is excellent. Now I'd like to say that the staff are very friendly and the audio multi media guide is very informative and child friendly and it's free (Great for kids!) Volunteers definitely know their stuff and are just so friendly! The restaurant is absolutely brilliant and has reasonable prices and the gift shop is full of things the kids will love. 5 Stars!!!
L. H.
A beautiful Palace on the outskirts of London. The grounds were wonderful, a nice place for a walk, and the building was impressive. Extremely 'modern' for a Palace, which was quite a shock, but a pleasant one.
E. C.
A truly enchanting place if you like history and Art Deco. Walking through the house, the wanderer gets a pretty vivid idea of the colourful life the Courtaulds must have lead. Combined with the gardens, it makes for a lovely day out. The weather during my visit was cold and grey but I still enjoyed it - I cannot wait to come again when the sun decides to show (and to have a gold bathroom one day:-) lovely and informative staff as well +++
s. f.
House and grounds both highly recommended. We'll definitely go back for more visits in the spring/summer.
Free audio tour was an added bonus.
a. L.
Unique house with its art deco interior the medieval Hall is stylised on the past hall neverless very interesting staff very knowledgeable approachable and helpful a pleasure to visit.
C. W.
Absolutely loved the Christmas lights experience
V. G.
Really wonderful day out. Great play park for kids and the fish in the moat are massive. There’s a wonderful donkey sanctuary behind the palace too.
K. K.
Really recomend this place. You can actually walk thriu all the rooms. Gread gardens around. Less crowded than more known places. If you like palaces and gardens, it's a great choice. Easy to get to by bus.
S. A. W.
Beautiful and interesting place to visit and spend the day at. Very glamorous too. Great for kids too as plenty of space to run around, explore and a nice playground by the cafe so you can relax while they play. The garden is totally beautiful
M. R.
Don't take a backpack or large bag, they will hassle you inside the house if you cannot wear it on your front. One lady got quite aggressive about it when though I was holding the bag at my side and telling her I was being careful. Gardens are lovely and were my favourite part, and if you enjoy history and architecture you should enjoy your visit. However I won't be returning again except to visit the gardens!
T. P.
Excellent local attraction. A little expensive unless you have the English Heritage membership, but if you want to see a unique palace, with an impressive history, and some beautiful gardens, it's worth the trip. Not huge, you'll see everything in a couple of hours, but the gardens are the perfect place to relax on an English summer's day.
K. P.
Nice light display a nice length even for toddlers. No idea about the palace itself as we only did the light show.
N. K.
Eltham Palace is a wonderfully preserved and fascinating place to visit and if you're fan of art deco then you're in for a real treat. With a checkered history charting both that of an Ex-Royal Palace, and the home of an incredibly interesting and wealthy couple in the 1930's. The tour affords a fascinating overview of how the place in it's current form came to be and the life of the Courtauld family in that era.
D. C.
Although the guide scripts are a touch cheesy, you can avoid listening to those bits and just use the guide to make sure you don't miss anything in the buildings. But explore the gardens on your own, since there are hidden stairs that take you quickly to the prettiest places without long walks, if you don't want to do the whole tour.
T. M.
Nice art deco house to look round, lovely gardens, take a picnic. We are English heritage members so it's all free.
A. H.
Wow - to a fan of both modernism and history this place was incredible. Just divine gardens as well. The audio guide was indispensable. Such a fascinating insight into incredibly interesting people with lots of personal touches. Easy trip from central London. Can't speak for gift shop or café.
M. R.
A must see for Art Deco fans, the Courtaulds built their mansion in the 1930s, adjoining to what were the ruins of a Tudor palace (now a restored grand hall). Lovely day out.
N. H. A.
The hammerbeam roof of the great hall is the third-largest of its type in England, and the Art Deco interior of the house has been described as a "masterpiece of modern design".
P. “. 5. T.
Throughly enjoyed looking round the house and gardens. Guide staff had excellent knowledge about the rooms in the house. Had lunch from the cafe, was freshly cooked and served with smiles.
S. C.
Stunningly beautiful interiors. Cannot enter all the rooms at the moment so I think I'd Iike to return when current distancing is relaxed. Gardens look great. Nice cafe with range of hot and cold drinks and food. All staff we encountered were so friendly. Recommended.
L. M.
We was at Eltham Palace for the jousting, it is a lovely art deco house, with an amazing great hall attached... but the event wasn't as good as it could have been this year... only 2 food stalls (pizza and burger) where the wait and queues were horrendous! Overpriced as always, and It was abit mish mash, and all over the place... we have been 3 yrs running, and sadly it seems to have got worse each time... we won't be going again to this event... but the house is a nice visit for those wanting to see some of Elthams history.
M. A.
What an amazing place!! Such a charming house, the best bit: how well informed and approachable the volunteers are!! No question is left unanswered. Also they provided you with extra bits of gossip about the former residents. Several visits before, still something new once again. Well done English Heritage!!
G. F.
Lovely afternoon at Eltham Palace the gardens and house. Great journey for us as well, Waterloo station and then Waterloo East service for a few stops then 10 minute walk.
M. W.
We visited on a Monday afternoon, an excellent time to visit, not too crowded and so you had time and space to enjoy the many rooms and beautiful gardens. An oasis of calm, culture and history in South East London.
R. G.
A very unexpectedly "modern" stately home. A great route and tour. Impressive interior but don't expect the traditional, and don't let the outside fool you, this is very much an art deco interior! The great hall is wonderfully restored and impressive. You can imagine the parties and entertaining that went on here so easily!
J. T.
I know even a huge lottery win couldn’t make this place mine, but it’s on the bucket list anyway. The old Hall is impressive, but the ultra-modernity of the ‘new’ Palace lives on even after 80 odd years.
G. B.
Beautiful light show.
N. L.
This old Palace is absolutely beautiful. They have a great self guided tour and it’s just lovely to walk around the grounds and house.
A. A.
Magical place.only been in garden but I can't wait till reopen to see amazing artdeco interior
D. J.
Great day out. Beautifully kept grounds and lovely food to be had too.
Y.
Nice place to visit. We can have a relax time in the garden and cafe.
j. m.
Great day out, the house is the ultimate art deco, grounds are lovely, parking is very reasonable, but the cafe is very expensive and for larger families maybe take a pack lunch.
P. L.
Very nice place for picnic and walk among flowers and historic garden. Peaceful place. Very good food, not expensive. Very nice stuff. It is worth to come more than one time. Better buy English Heritage membership for couple. Very romantic when sunny. Great for date and for whole family.
T.
Beautiful horses at the stables behind very quiet and polite people there. Palace grounds are wonderful for days out
V. V.
a fantastic venue, really friendly staff /volunteers who go out of their way to help. ideal place to go for picnic as there is a lot of green space
C. M.
Enchanted Eltham was a special event hosted by English Heritage for Christmas.
The Garden was illuminated and there mystical music playing. It was delightful to stroll through the gardens and admire the lighting effects.
The full moon made it feel that bit more enchanted.
Eltham Palace is most worthy of a visit at any time of year for those who appreciate Art Deco style which is brought alive by a superb audio tour where you are a guest invited to a party at the palace.
A. I.
One more visit to Eltham Palace. Easy commutable from London and perfect for a day out. Tulips festival made a nice addition to the palace and garden
T. S.
Fantastic place. You can easily spend a day here. Incredibly interesting tour of the house, and the gardens (especially on a sunny spring day) are fantastic. Loads for kids to do too.
J.
Fantastic day out and the place is maintained extremely well. Suited for all ages with play areas for children and restaurant for all.
S. E.
Weird but wonderful. I’ve never been anywhere like here before, which for starters is a great reason to go. The house is a mish mash between old medieval Britain and turn of the century European opulence. Room by room there is some special moments of extreme craftsmanship or just plain weirdness. The garden is also special and a bit more timeless than the house. It was host to a jazz band on the Sunday we went. Entry was free with artfund and audio guides were also free. I would recommend for anyone interesting in design and/or medieval Britain.
A. P.
Amazing place so well kept and maintained. Worth it to visit. The staff is really kind.
A. S.
An absolutely incredible building, with a very unique atmosphere and a very interesting and informative audio guide. I'd highly recommend visiting Eltham Palace!
E. P.
Really interesting property with beautiful gardens. Tasty cafe with plenty of seating inside and outside. There is parking available for £3 or for free if you are a corporate customer (CSSC [public sector workers check this out!] gets you free access to the property and free parking). There is also a cute play area for kids next to the cafe
R. R.
An outstanding place to visit. Very helpful staff. It's like being on the set of a Poirrot episode. I have booked a return visit on one of the Halloween ghost tours.
M. B.
Beautiful art deco palace right next to the original medieval Great Hall. Beautiful gardens and lovely views of London.
V. M.
Amazing day out place!! Palace is outstanding and the walk around palace definitely one of the thing to do when visit the place..
J. R.
Enchanted Eltham Palace was lovely, very festive. Beautiful building and gardens.
I. C.
It's expensive to get in but this is a beautiful place to visit. Fantastic art deco rooms, a medieval hall and wonderful grounds . There's a really good cafe too.
Recommended
D. N.
Always a treat to visit here. Timed tickets and one-way system make it an easy visit during the pandemic.
G. G.
Very interesting. Great audio tour. Nice food in cafe. Very relaxing exploring both the house and gardens. Visit only let down by some staff who where less than friendly.
S. T.
Excellent place for a really good day out - interesting house & lovely gardens. Staff were also really helpful & informative
D. R.
Wonderful place to visit, beautiful surroundings. If you are in Eltham it's a must. You can visit the gardens free but have to pay to go in the Palace.
D. O.
Was awesome and stunning and memorable location plus feel good factor. Magnificent edifice .
J. G.
Lovely day out! The house is wonderful to walk around and the play area and garden spaces are great for kids to run around.
B. F.
A beautiful piece of Englands heritage that is easy to get to being in London. Wonderfully restored for us all to enjoy. We first walked around the house, had a lovely lunch from the tea shop. Which we enjoyed outside in the garden. And then went on to take a walk on the grounds and soak up the glorious weather.
K. D.
Great place to visit! If you like 1930s interiors and beautiful gardens, this is the place to be! Very well organised to ensure social distancing, too. Highly recommended!
J.
It's a Weatherspoons which means functional with food to a standard and a wide range of drinks, both food and drinks are at sensible prices often in nice buildings and good locations. This is no exception. Pleasant, smiley people behind the bar, excellent Greene King IPA. This particular Weatherspoons serves Eggs Benedict and Royale all day - add a side salad and you've got a tasty meal that hasn't been fried. The toilets are in relatively good condition and the whole place was clean. Not the most interesting building (try The Nights Templar or the Capitol if you want beautiful buildings) but it does have lovely windows. As always, a great place to stop for a meal or drink anytime of day, especially if you don't have a limitless budget.
C. S.
Great day out, best to get there early as parking is a bit of a problem, even the disabled, but we'll worth a visit, gardens are beautiful, fortunately we went in very good weather.
F. A.
Love Eltham Palace. I've been a few times and always find more to see.
Great for everyone. Also has a great cafe and shop with a fab play area for young children.
S. G.
A fascinating glimpse into how the glitterati lived in the 30"s and 40"s gardens are very nice but this year are a bit neglected due to the Covid situation, hopefully next year will be back to normal takes 2-3 hours to see house and garden but can easily spend more time if you want. Children's play area and picnic site available
C. W.
Disappointed as unable to walk round the moat on Saturday as barriers across path . Only way to walk round is up stairs with no hand rail , down stairs has a hand rail .Very difficult for buggies
E. B.
Eltham Palace is a short train ride from Central London. The original great hall still exists but the main body of the Palace was built in the 1930s and is the most exquisite art deco interior when can see. They have a very entertaining and informative audio video guide which makes you feel like you're a guest in the house and is so informative. The Gardens are an added bonus as they are so lovely
J. C.
For a good day with the height of high society from the 1920’s with wonderful gardens and a beautiful house this would be a place for you, enjoy
C. B.
An absolute hidden gem, beautifully preserved art deco party home meets medieval palace. Gorgeous grounds.
S. P.
Lovely palace and perfect for a family day out. On a busy day parking can be a bit uncomfortable but get there early a d you shall have no trouble. The indoor Cafe is not very attractive for vegetarians like me but ample picnic area allows you to get what you like while keeping the cost low :)
S. C.
Lovely place , great for the children as well.
K. G.
A complete trip back in time,Henry V stayed here on his way to Dover to go to Agincort,Henry V111 hunted and jousted here, its a great place to spend the day and take all this on board
A. B.
Our first visit and can't wait until we go again, such wonderful grounds to walk around.
S. L.
Still a visit well worth making, as English Heritage are still improving the site and opening new areas to the public.
P. G.
Beautiful location, for something so close to London. Interesting combination of the 15th and 20th centuries. Great place to have a serious party.
B. G.
Enjoyable walk round the gardens. Because of Covid restrictions we were unable to visit the house but the gardens are extensive and we spent a couple of hours there. When you arrive the toilets are at the entrance. You walk through the small shop and then there's a coffee shop. We bought a hot drink and ate our packed lunches in the outside seating area. There aren't many flower borders but a good place for children to run around!
K. S.
There is really a nice mixture of medeival architecture and 1930s style building and art deco all over the new building !
A very popular palace for several medeival kings.
When the last owners got married, Stephen Courtould wedding present to his bride Gine was a lemur he bought from Harrods' Zoo!
D. K.
You wouldn't be disappointed. A good example of the luxury style of Art Deco. Kids friendly. Cafe & shop nearby. Try their passion fruit curd.
L. N.
Always worth a visit and gets better once you've run the the gauntlet of enquiring personnel requesting that you join the English Heritage.
U. P.
We really enjoyed looking around the Eltham Palace & gardens so much that we have become members of the English Heritage.
C. W.
Great for a walk round . Take some pond pellets feed the fish in the moat . My granddaughter loves it .
N. H.
Fascinating contrast between the medieval and the art deco! Very well preserved, very accessible. Lovely helpful staff.
J. T.
Despite the house being closed this is a great day out with the family. Good play park for older children (6+). Nice cafe with a good choice of food, drink and snacks.
And the walk around the grounds is great with lots to see!
D. L.
Worth a detour. Great house with interesting gardens. And some quite large fish in the old moat.
B. B.
An amazing place, wounderful gardens and a fabulous playground would recommend to anyone

Beautiful Art Deco building. Grounds are open during lockdown and are amazing.

Eltham Palace has been on my to do list for 4 years and I went today. Oh my, the building and the interiors are just beautiful, brilliant and I can’t say enough. You need to truely see it all, I will have to come back to see the gardens.
E. L.
Great house to walk around, very interesting.
Also lovely grounds to walk around.
P. P.
House really interesting. Beautiful gardens. Easy transport links. Short walk from Mottingham station
K. Y.
As ever, a wonderful house to walk round and enjoy. Fewer rooms were open, however, due to Covid rules which was a bit limiting.
Poor weather cut short our time in the grounds but the views across to London were magnificent.
d. f.
Such a fascinating and beautiful place! Great history- both ancient and more recent. Lovely gardens with very helpful and informative gardeners.
S. L.
Such a pretty place to just run around the gardens and chat to the very friendly fish.
L. L.
Stylish blend of Art Deco and Tudor features. Becomes alive at every carefully staged events.
D. N.
Nice park. Clean. Lots of open space. Perfect for a family picnic and a dog walk lots of miles for joggers and enjoy a green house garden and cafes in the park. Basket ball and football facilities.

Beautiful stately home with interesting mix of Art Deco and Tudor history. A must visit.
T. A.
Stunning interiors and garden to walk around. Audio tour is useful.
Might be problem parking if it gets busy
N. S.
A palace with an interesting story and beautiful gardens. Place to spend nice day out.
c. d.
Came for the house, enjoyed it despite the COVID restrictions on access to the basement so shall return. Cafe was nice too, didn’t have time to inspect the gardens but looked nice from a distance.
P. D.
We attended the enchanted palace evening for a wonderful show of illuminations. The walk was very well organised and fun for kids. The staff were lovely and I will have to go back in the day time to visit the palace. Be warned parking is packed so call in advance if you want a spot.
S. M.
Lovely night with the lights 🤞
O. H.
Really lovely day out exploring the Palace and gardens. Great cafe with wide range of food and drinks and a lovely gift shop too. Would highly recommend!
K. B.
Been to see the Christmas Enchanted Eltham Lights, better than last year with more to see and the light maze worth the entry!
E. A.
Beautiful tranquil gardens, lots of places to sit and admire the surroundings and peacefulness. House is worth a look round, staff very helpful and friendly
F. N.
A great house to visit, with an interesting history as well as amazing stylised decoration and wonderful grounds.
J. V.
I was very lucky with the weather the day we visited. I had been before but many yrats ago. The building is so impressive. The great hall realy atmospheric. The rest has Been restored to the 30s decor as it was when the Courtolds had it.
The gardens are wonderful and alone worth the visit. It being half term there were entertainments for the children too. I particularly loved watching the little ones jousting on hobby horses!
S. W.
This is great day out for whole family
Palace has impressive gardens
There is a good cafe and playground for children
j. b.
Historical house from Tudor times to 1930s. Well worth the visit. Great cafe too.

Really enjoyed my first visit here. We also joined the British heritage as we plan on going back and visiting other places
P. S.
Great to see the old medieval and modern 1930, clean look of the Palace.
A. T.
Went at Christmas time - Wonderful lights in beautiful gardens!
M. J.
An absolutely fantastic place to visit especially if you like art deco .
D. J.
Opened at 10. Prepurchased tickets. Easy parking. Nice play area at entrance. Good cafe restaurant for take away food and drink. Pretty gardens and game for children in grounds
J. H.
We were looking for a different family experience of London's Christmas lights, and we were not disappointed. Great for the photographer, romantic couple and families of all kinds. Going to take you an hour to get around, longer if you absorbe it all.
A. A.
Rare and unique property with a 1930s decor contrasting with Tudor architecture. Outstanding gardens, and knowledgeable and friendly volunteers.
J. M.
Great main original part of the house. The history explained very well by very friendly English Heritage representatives. Loved the cakes & coffee in rustic cafe which would have been excellent if the (available) gas heaters were on on this wet and cold day. The kids didn't care about the rain and enjoyed the play park regardless.
L. A.
Went for an Easter egg hunt. Was really well organised (Covid restrictions) and lovely grounds. The play area was nice and you could sit and have lunch while the kids play. Shame the palace itself wasn’t open but we still managed to spend about 4.5 hours there.
C. H.
Beautiful art-deco house and gardens, incorporating medieval great hall. Easy parking and friendly staff.
S. H.
Christmas lights visit - well organised and an excellent place to stroll around their Christmas lights.
I. R.
Beautiful art deco interiors in a medieval building. Pleasant garden walks. Children's playground.
J. K.
An absolutely stunning mansion in the heart of eltham. We didn't realise there woyld be so much to do. Literally a stone's throw from the high street this little gem is way to find but as soon as you walk on the grounds you feel like you are any where but London. Lots to do for different seasons. We went at Halloween, made Lots of bits and bobs and even had a lovely talk about witches and the history of them.2 little cafes situated on the grounds and disabled toilets on the lower level. A wonderful little gift shop and a chance to sign up to English heritage if you have not already. Really recommend coming here just for the views and the walk around the mansion. Not a day to be missed
P. M.
Great place to visit at Greenwich. You can walk through the gardens which are quite natural looking with olenty of flowers. The is a pond with large fish. The house is art deco in style and absolutely beautiful! Not too large so you can take your time going round. Everything was well planned for self distancing. The cafe had a good variety of sandwiches, cakes and drinks. There was also a shop with very friendly and helpful staff. There is a small car park which charges £3 per visit, free if you beling to English Heritage. All in all I would recommend a visit, especially if you like art deco.
A. S.
Spacious ,quiet and interesting.good parking and facilities. Could do with more signage within the property
L. C.
very interesting house and wonderful gardens. Very disappointing cafe. Coffee/tea ok however food medioca at best. I would recommend pack a picnic and sit in the grounds.
S. M.
Lovely gardens, interesting house (50% Tudor, 50% art deco) and a nice little shop :) everyone really friendly, would be a good spot for a picnic
c. m.
Great place for art deco lovers!

Absolutely stunning place. Lucky to visit on a bright sunny day! Great play area with a huge ground space to sit and enjoy the views while kids played.

The gardens are beautiful and well maintained, it didn't feel like a big bare field, as flowers, shrubs and trees were strategically planted along the path that leads to the Palace itself.
We were very lucky to have gone during half-term, and in the garden there was a tent set up with two amazing actors telling stories every half of hour. After the stories all children could have a go at target practice archery with a wooden bow and arrow and jousting. It has been sanitised after every child and the actors were following all covid rules.
The Palace itself is well maintained, a one-way system put in place, small rooms closed off but doors open sonwe could take a peek.
The style that they chose to redecorate was not pleasing to my eyes, but that's a very personal opinion that didn't really affect the whole picture.
Outside there's a wooden play area for children next to the café that serves beverages as well as starters and main courses. Their prices are acceptable, compared to other English heritage sites.

I loved discovering this extraordinary Palace. Beautiful day, friendly staff, and easy to get to from Central London.
H. B.
Beautiful grounds, architecture and history. Very friendly staff, good general wheelchair access. Can't wait to go again!
N. S.
Great place. Beautiful art deco home and medieval great hall with Tudor links. Love it!
A. S.
The palace itself was closed due to COVID-19, but we took a long walk around the gardens and the flowers were very beautiful. I recommend going in the spring if you want to see many colourful tulips, forget-me-nots, and magnolias!
C. R.
An art deco masterpiece - magnificent! The gardens are lovely as well And as usual, the Eng Heritage volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable.
J. L.
Wonderful art decor house and the visual audio aid the best Ive ever had. Unfortunately in the grounds a lot of the information cards were missing!
C. W.
Had a walk round the grounds as house not open . May be open now Cyril
M. b.
Beautiful art deco palace and gardens grounds in Eltham
G. P.
I really liked it. It is a great place to enjoy with family
M. M.
Lovely Art Deco interiors and beautiful gardens. New visitors center and café are welcoming.
M. C.
Beautiful place and very friendly staff
S. L.
It’s a bit out from central London but it is worth the journey if you enjoy Art Deco design. The palace is an incredible and quite unique fusion of a timber beamed medieval hall and the new wing. The owners obsession with their pet lemur Jongy is also quite special. The coffee at the cafe and the garden are both nice too.
N. I.
Beautiful retro house, surrounded by gorgeous gardens. Live jazz in the gardens every summer Sunday.
M. S.
Really beautiful architecture and interesting history behind the palace. Definately coming back!
j. b.
Easy access , not too imposing or grand so quite manageable to see all within a reasonable time A good example of Art Nouveau decoration in all rooms and an insight into the lives of the wealthy of that period .
M. J.
Visited for a wedding. Absolutely stunning. Only downside is not much ventilation inside venue so gets very hot.
G. I.
This is some amazing place to visit! Beautiful combination of Tudor architecture and Art Deco. Coupled with the beautiful garden it is unforgettable. The best time to visit is in my guess is May-June. The rose garden should be in full bloom.
F. H.
An unexpected visit to this historic palace as part of my 50th year celebrations. WAAP (what an amazing place), The childhood home of Henry VIII to the Coulthauld's Art Deco renovations. This has to be seen to be believed. Juxtaposition is only one word that describes this place Deco next to Tudor? with so many bathrooms..... This incredible beautiful stunning palace gives a MASSIVE variety for all, ruins, deco, gothic, gardens, moat and tudor (with a hint of Italian Baroque) thrown in for good measure. Basque in the sunshine on the lawns in a wicker chair, stunning views of London as well.....
S. I.
Great house with very interesting and varied architecture, along with a vast garden which you can walk around. The cafe has nice food at a reasonable price too. It was well organised for Covid-19, with lots of hand sanitizer stations. However, the gardens may be closed at short notice, so check before you arrive.
V. B.
Great house and gardens.
T. C.
Excellent day out. Lovely gardens. Nice cafe/restaurant.
I. J.
Beautiful grounds and building
S.
I think you should be a big fan of art deco to go there, otherwise, there are many more exceptional places in London if you are a tourist. Medieval hall is stunning (I am more into really old things). The garden...West Ham park is free to visit and much better.
L.
What a fantastic place. The herbaceous border was in all it's autumn glory. The house is a feast for the eyes, especially if you love art deco. Beautiful grounds and room for a picnic, all still within London.
M. M.
A beautiful house in s lovely setting although it can getters busy. Cafe and shop and gardens.
A. H.
Very interesting and informative. Lots to do. The old hall is spectacular
C.
Gorgeous house, a beautiful mix of Medieval and Art Deco architecture! You can still see almost the whole house and the grounds/gardens are stunning too.
Highly recommend!!
S. S.
Lovely house and gardens tucked away with good views of London
E. E.
This place is a gem. The palace and gardens are nice, but what is best is the 20's art deco decoration in some of the rooms. It was very interesting to see how people lived during the time. It is also a nice place to come with children. There is a playground and stables (I did not see the staples but was told). In the building there is a little second hand book shop which is worth a visit.
J.
Beautiful house and gardens with interesting stories. Best on a warm summer day to enjoy the gardens
R. H.
Wonderful gardens and views of East London

F. C.
A lovely house and beautiful garden and grounds. Staff made our day out really special. 🥰
J. B.
Interesting mix of Tudor Great hall and Art Deco house added on by one of the Courtauld family
J. D. M.
An atmospheric, opulent trip back to a time where Britain was embracing radical change. Literally the Palace is a striking juxtaposition of Tudor heritage and Art Deco splendour.
Thank you for having me on a beautiful summer's day.
S. P.
Really nice evening. Christmas lights are excellent.
S. C.
Beautiful Christmas lights, well worth a visit
F. P.
Great trip for the kids to see how the well off lived in the late 1930s
M. B.
Such a great place to wonder around at any age, great for the mind, body & soul. Great cake in the Orangery too! 😜

A hidden gem in South East London. Beautiful tranquil gardens
A. J.
Beautiful and relaxing place to visit. Well recommended.
M. H.
A beautiful day out! What a fascinating historic site with an interesting recent history, too, set in spectacular gardens with even its own moat!
L. D.
Most modern Palace in it's time yet still so much history. Nice garden with gift shop and restaurant. Lots of seatings in the garden grounds.
J. S.
There are no words to describe the amazing experience here. The audio tour is amazing with great details and history. I spent over 4 hours here!!! Looking at and absorbing everything. It really is a stunning example of Art Deco Luxury. It's a secret jewel of Tudor History as well!! Go!! If you're in London or visiting South East UK GOOOO!
j. h.
Stunning views. The house isn't open due to covid restrictions for now. Plenty of wildlife. A nice coffee shop with quality food and drinks. A bit on the expensive side tho.
T. H.
Nice place to visit and cafe food is nice too!
J. B.
This is a mixture of an old former Royal Palace hall, and a newer Art Deco building built by a member of the Courtauld family. If you're interested in either, I honestly think you'll enjoy it. I honestly didn't know much about Art Deco, or the Courtaulds before my visit, but the docents(?) where knowledgeable, and patient, when explaining things.
G. H.
Love the art deco. Very well laid out, interesting info. Gardens beautiful. Loved the rockery!
M. H.
Gets busy, go early. Loved the art deco
k. t.
Great local site, worth a walk round the park
g. h.
Brilliant place fun with kids for Easter and part of English herritage annual pass
M.
Beautiful grounds and house. Nice food in the cafe
S. H.
Lived nearby for years and only just got round to visiting. Wish I’d visited earlier. Beautiful grounds, wonderful house renovated in an Art Deco style with incredible royal history. The grounds are immaculately kept and a treat to walk around. Nice cafe and gift shop and interesting play area for the kids. Entry is bit pricey for adults but free for English Heritage members. Definitely going back soon!
E. L.
English Heritage art deco historical house. Great for a family visit, or a quiet solo meander through history. The previous owners had great character and even a pet lemur. Amazing grounds to picnic in, or grab a bite at their cafe. They even have a playground for the kids.
Watch out for the art deco period special events.
C.
Only walked around the grounds which are beautifully maintained. A hidden tranquil gem a stones throw from the busy high street.
A. M.
Great day. The multimedia guide of the Palace and Gardens was interesting throughout and there is definitely enough content for more than one visit. The upkeep is fantastic. The food was high quality. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
The play area is small but actually well designed so don't plan to spend long there before the kids get bored but it's good fun during lunch and on your way in or out. The only warning I would have from an otherwise fantastic visit is that my daughter ended up with a blister on her hand from the monkey bars so just be careful, particularly on hot days.
D. B.
Fantastic light displays, wonderful evening.
E. J.
Beautiful place, well worth the visit, audio guide is excellent
E. M.
A beautiful art deco building with wonderful gardens and a medieval hall. I stared at this building over its moat when I was a child and now English Heritage own it and have brought it back to its art deco heyday. Wander the beautiful gardens, careful of the huge fish in the moat which now only surrounds three sides of the building. The building is amazingly and shows art deco at its best. The entry hall sets the scene for the rest of the rooms and transports you back to a time where elegance ruled.
Д. H.
The best place in London to spend the day out. A piece of paradise
T. S.
Wonderful day out visiting this much altered Royal Palace.
R. E.
Amazing place; great to explore with the included audio guide. Gardens are beautiful too 😀
S. B.
I'd wanted to go here for ages, and on the whole it lived up to expectations. I got there about 11am and there was plenty of parking, £3 a day flat fee. The ticket office is in the shop which is a bit chaotic at times. You're given a wristband which will be checked on entry to the house. The house is incredible, quirky little details and stunning design features along with the medieval hall. The only way you'll find out about the house though is with the audio guide they give you, as there is minimal text around the house. I don't really like audio guides and prefer to absorb the surroundings myself, plus it means people tend to wander into each other and make sure they're following the right route! Sheep alert! You could buy the guidebook in the shop with your ticket (£4.50) as an alternative. The gardens are beautiful as well and the cafe has decent food and nice seating. We were there for about 5 hours, it's definitely somewhere to linger and enjoy!
C. H.
Took the children to see the gardens. They spent a good couple of hours in the adventure playground. Value for money.
E. H.
A beautiful place, medieval history and art deco elegance, plus very fine gardens and a good café.
C. E.
Fantastic historic building, beautifully maintained, really shows the history. The gardens are magnificent with an amazing display of flowers. There is a great feature in a few the rooms there is dressing up clothes for children to try on so they can see how people dressed in different periods of the palace's history.
T. B.
Fantastic. Stunning art deco interior and brilliant gardens.
N. A.
Very friendly staff..Had conversations about the history of he place while having s private tour... nice mix of buildings here... great place to visit
D. W.
House and 13th century palace not open but garden, flowers and coffee shop with good food is an old world oasis within 1/4 mile of this busy London suburb. House scheduled for middle May. (Check on website)
e. d.
Amazing grounds! Unique architecture. Well look after by staff willing to talk about the palace n it's historical buildings.. The gardens are amazing, took lots of photos.. There is parking n activities for children/playground.. It's not free..
D. W.
An amazing building with some beautiful 1930's decor
D.
A Magical Place a hidden gem especially in autumn worth to visit!
A. E. M.
Such a beautiful palace! Lovely gardens and a nice coffee shop in a conservatory with tables outside too. There was jazz bands playing on the day. Inside the palace was beautiful, the guide was able to give us plenty of information about the history of the palace. I recommend!
A. P.
Very good place to visit and have time with family!
A. S.
Lovely place for walking
J. G. (. G.
Saw our friends get married here. Amazing setting.
B. A.
Cracking English Heritage building and grounds. Got a bit of both ancient history and more modern history.
L. W.
Excellent
S. S.
Lovely, well kept gardens. Good for walking around. Excellent play area for the kids with wooden equipment that is all in good order. Tea shop is next to the play equipment and there are picnic tables to sit at while the youthful energy is burnt off. The house is, again, well kept and very stylish. We have a membership and go here often.
C. S.
Great art deco, really love going to this gorgeous house. Great climbing /activity centre for children and there are dressing up clothes in the Palace. This is a true gem in the middle of a housing estate but you wouldn't know it once you have parked your car, can't rate this place high enough
D. L.
Stunning example of Art Deco design. Well worth visiting.
F. S.
Great place but not worth the price!
M. R.
Beautiful, beautiful place to spend with friends and family. The palace has been strongly changed from its mediaeval appearance. However it's a vintage style full of history with very interesting architectural and interior intervention. I really appreciated by the way that the gallery hall has been maintened as originally was. The roof structure is astonishing and spectacular. Very glad to see that the structural intervention didn't affect it's beauty.
The park around and the little pond is another beautiful thing where spending time, having a picnic or simply relaxing. Gorgeous. And finally the cafe and the playground. If you have kids they will definitely enjoy climbing the wooden structure. The main cafe is small and the food is really good. Hope you get the point. Get there and enjoy!!!

Such a beautiful evening in Enchanted Eltham Palace, so lovely
j. y.
I visited on a warm summer's day and walked around the gardens after watching ducks and fish in the moat. Lunch at the café was lovely, fresh, tasty and good value. Not too much to see in the house but the hall was impressive. Worth a visit in good weather.
A. Z.
Renovated and restored with 1930s art deco design by the previous wealthy owners. Beautiful gardens and nice shop attached
J. P.
Great day out with the kids. Beautiful building and gardens.
H. C.
Beautiful took kids to see it lit up at Xmas amazing
P. K.
Very Good we attended a free talk in the great hall about the history of the place. Then walked up stairs to the upper floor to get an electronic guide and an intro film on the history of the place.
Then back to the entrance for a drink.
Followed by a wonder around the gardens curtailed by rain. With a visit on a nice day with things for the children to do from a trail to follow with dressing up to a wooden play area.
All in Not bad on a damp day but great on a sunny day.
K.
Very interesting place to visit especially if you like Art Deco. Use audio guide to get the best.
N. N.
Gorgeous place, steeped in history and class. Sadly not for sale...sadly out of my budget. Scariest part is my girlfriend keeps hinting it's a great place for a wedding. Send help.
R. S.
Went for Enchanted Eltham Palace recently and was spell-bound. They did such a wonderful job with their light and sound installations, it really gave the impression of it being magical. It was very impressive and a great experience during the Christmas period.
The grounds are extremely well-kept, staff are very friendly and helpful. Can tell it’s great for all, couples, families, etc.
F. F.
It was very nice and good for the money. Food was amazing!!! And not too pricey.
But it was A little disorganized. They were sending people in different directions so I didn't meet my sister til the end. Also the food was outside but not enough seats, so we had to wait for the food and go inside.
I think there could have been more, there seemed to alot of colored trees and not enough effects. The disco effect and fountains were great.
E. M.
Wonderful palace and lovely gardens. A beautiful place to visit. Very convenient to reach as Eltham station is a mere 10 minute walk. There's a nice café and a kids play area too. The rooms in the palace are well kept with original furniture and furnishings.
l. b.
We all loved it here! It is beautiful and even my 4 year old and 7 year old enjoyed looking round the stunning grounds and palace. We hold English heritage membership so getting in for free is great. We spent a good few hours here, the park and restaurant were also lovely.
R. A.
Unusual mix of Art Deco and Tudor..very interesting.
T. B.
Lovely old pile
A.
It’s alright. Some fresh air in London. If they could just improve the water faucet in men’s toilet because the water is so weak your hand is touching the sink.
A. C.
This place is a gem. The house is just amazing. A mix of styles, and some innovative design features for its time. The grounds are amazing, and well worth a wander. There's a play area for the kids, along with stuff for them to do as you walk around, and a nice tea room as well, meaning everyone's happy!
W. B.
Fantastic Christmas lights, very enjoyable.
A. B.
An amazing grand hall. A really old palace that's had extensive modernization if you call almost a hundred years modern. Grounds were not to impressive but enjoyed the falconry show.
A.
Beautiful Art Deco palace with a huge story to tell. Highly recommend. Fun for kids too, lots to explore inside and out. Cafe is small but with larger, mainly outdoor, seating area.
S. G.
Filming for TV Show the weather was so warm and loads of people had attended the event that went on until early evening.
D. L.
A real gem !! Lovely grounds to walk around too.
M. C.
Beautiful grounds that are kept well and perfect for a picnic. Felt very safe and numbers into the house are restricted
J. K.
Beautiful place full of wonder and historical significance. We will be back
D. C.
Waltham Palace is stunning and everyone should visit as it is a part of history. There is something very special about Art Deco and it’s clean lines - the furniture is stunning and the setting is breath taking, I am going back in Spring once all of the flowers are out - definitely worth a visit
M. H.
Fabulous lights, grandson and I thoroughly enjoyed it
F.
A perfect blend of history, beauty and food. The tour was informative with additions audio visual guide (most tech of all English Heritage sites I've been). The cafe was well priced with variety of food and drinks and the kids play area was imaginative (not the typical slide and swing you'll see everywhere else)
R. M.
Lovely visit. Excellent audio guide included in entrance price. Very interesting history and story of the early 1900s owners who restored what was left of the old and built the new in lavish modern (then) art deco style. Lovely garden and grounds. Very peaceful and rural although within London. Nice cafe.
O. M.
Wonderful enchanted palace experience for the whole family
C. B.
Fascinating Deco building with lovely gardens. Some amazing marquetry in the entrance area. Also a medieval great hall. Saved and developed by the Courtaulds in the 1930s. Taken over by English Heritage in the 90s. Well worth a visit. Good food and pleasant setting in which to enjoy it. The eating area is a good size with outdoor seating and things to keep the little ones entertained.
J. S.
The house is still Covid-closed but the grounds are in fine fettle, with a good spring planting and promising for summer. One part is being renewed to bring it closer to the Courthauld planting. Good Covid management of visitors.
d. p.
Jazz in the great hall & and a picnic beside the moat opposite the impressive rockery
D. F.
It is a fantastic Art Deco house attached to a medieval great hall. Nice cafe and gift shop. Really worth a visit. Lovely gardens around the mote. Henry VIII spent his childhood here.
M. Z.
Stunning garden, absolutely beautiful place
J. T.
Interesting house, lovely gardens, children well entertained.
Nice little cafe with a small selection of GF available, wasn't happy with the way cakes displayed, open to all especially children to cough over and prod.
Would recommend it for a visit.
I. W.
Good place for a long visit, especially in reasonably good weather, as it has extensive grounds and gardens. The house itself is very curious being a mix of thirties chic and medieval royal palace. My only slight criticism is that you cannot see the kitchen, "English Heritage" have done a great job on the restoration, staff here were very helpful and friendly, keep an eye out for the fish in the moat, they remind me of"Jaws"!
S. P.
The palace is fascinating with roots in two quite separate periods. It is well worth a visit. There is a restaurant and a small shop, car parking space is adequate. There are good audio/video guides but the thing that prevents a 5 star rating is that there are few room experts to answer any questions not addressed in the guides.
K. G.
A great day out for all the family. Fantastic to see how this historic palace (King Henry VIII lived here as a boy) was transformed into what you can see today. Great to see art deco design and hear about the owners lifestyle. Gardens are great to walk around too...see if you can spot the carb in the moat. Cafe had excellent food and was reasonably priced. Easy walking distance from Eltham train station.
D. W.
Good social distancing measures in place and still a wonderful day out as always.
The jazz picnic on the terrace made the day extra special. We'll definitely be back again soon.
