Reviews of Eltham Palace Gardens
N. I.
Beautiful grounds tucked away in the heart of South east London, I used English Heritage passes to access the grounds and the Palace. The Palace is a must see. There are a couple of coffee shops, a children's play area and ample places to sit and explore. The staff are very friendly and welcoming
M. W.
Enjoyable afternoon at Eltham Palace. Interesting history and great examples of Art Déco design. Even better today as the weather improved and we could appreciate the gardens
S. G.
Stunning property and grounds! Really interesting visit full of history. Beautiful house full of art deco treasures. Well worth a visit 😍
O. “.
Lovely place, house is absolutely amazing and a spectacle of art deco, very different and unique compared to most house&gardens you may have visited, garden was nice but some areas were very neglected and overgrown with weeds. Lovely reasonably priced hot drinks there too
J. S.
Very beautiful gardens. Don’t miss the rockery, sunken rose garden and medieval bridge.
I. C.
Wonderful place to visit. Beautiful grounds and fantastic art deco house with a medieval hall. Nice cafe to and there is a children's play area for the kiddies
C. A.
Beautiful grounds and a lovely walk round the Christmas lights - a lovely festive treat
L. R.
Beautiful absolutely stunning. Loved the house loved the gardens. Very pleasurable visit. Cafe was great as well.
M. D.
Amazing place for a day out. Beautiful grounds you can take a picnic or there are two cafes. The Palace is lovely very art deco.
N. A.
Fabulous 1930's home - a redesigned medieval palace. Wonderful ambience and lots to see.
J. J.
Really enjoyed the visit, especially the 1930s décor with gold bathroom and amazing entrance hall.
B. C.
Beautiful house and grounds. An historic hall leads into an amazing Art Deco house full of amazing details and fun touches. It's hard not to visit without imaging it as the scene of a period whodoneit novel. There is a small cafe and picnic area.
S. G.
Visited yesterday afternoon with family. It was a nice day trip and was great walking around the gardens. The palace itself had so much history and there was a one way system in place. The gardens also have a one way system in place which was good.
S. C.
The manor itself is a mashup of different time periods. The areas are well signposted with historical information and the staff were friendly and professional.
We went during the COVID-19 Period and the provisions that were put in place were adequate with staff enforcing these in a strict, but non obtrusive manner.
By far the highlight of the visit were the various gardens around the manor which you are free to stroll around. It's easy to lose track of time admiring the well manicured lawns and colourful flowers.
S. L.
As an English Heritage moment, local to the area, I have visited many times before, but I was so happy to see that they are still developing the site, opening new areas to the public and making improvements to the interaction and education throughout. The gardens are immaculate, and as it was Halloween week, we enjoyed a themed treasure hunt with our two children.
A. P.
The most remarkable thing about these gardens is the extraordinary sense of peace and calm that they afford to any visitor, who only moments ago would have been struggling through the usual mayhem of London traffic to arrive here. You might even convince yourself that you've left London for a country retreat.
The gardens are well cared for, but modest. Don't expect to be blown away by ambitious, exotic planting schemes. However, to see familiar plants thriving in this context just adds to the sense of homely tranquillity...
I. A.
The Christmas lights show was excellent- well organised and laid out. They had closed the car park to make space for a funfair, which they should really have advertised better
A. C.
Visited during the winter seasons, when they only open on the weekends.
Nice historic place to visit.
There's a visitor's cafe and plenty of car parking spaces.
Free audio guides allow you to visit the place at your own leisure. English Heritage has done a good job in preserving the interior as well as the exterior gardens. Overall well worth the visit.
A. M.
Beautiful building and fabulous grounds.
D. R.
Lovely place to visit, outside gardens, inside art deco. Also the great hall , oldest part where As a boy Henry VIII lived
J. B.
Amazing buildings and history. Well worth a visit.
T. B.
Beautiful garden, nice, and interesting furnishing.
H. Y.
Easy booking and excellent customer service on arrival. There were limited number of visitors during the allocated slot. Hence it was a joy to walk and embrace the gardens 😉
Z. Z.
An amazing place to spend a good day with friends or family.
M. M.
Great place to take the family beautiful outside grounds nice one way system and social distancing in place during the covid outbreak. Gor to explorw inside a must do i love being part of the english heritage.
Z. D.
Stunning gardens. Haven't yet been in the building but there's loads to see outside. Would highly recommend.
A. J.
Lovely. Beautiful grounds. Welcoming staff.
B. C.
Takes you back to a time of elegance and romance. Absolutely love Eltham Palace, the atmosphere is special there including in the grounds. You will love the history of the palace from Henry V111 to the 1940’s it will have you wanting more.
I. O.
Fantastic rooms, lovely gardens.
M. K.
Despite all the safety measures currently in place it was beautiful.
The gardens were full of flowers and trees, you could get some great photos. In the palace it was beautiful too, not alot of information but you could still get good photos with no flash on ofcourse.
The safety measurements they put in place were good they placed many hand sanitizers around the area, a one way system, all the staff had masks on and were very nice too.
Can't sit inside of the cafe but alot of seating outside with umbrellas for shade.
K. M.
I'm absolutely in love with the gardens, the castle and the coffee shop with the playground.... beautiful and so much history...
M. B.
Art Deco sumptuous. The furniture isn't original but the architecture is amazing. Gorgeous autumnal garden
K. A. B.
Wonderful green and unique. It's definitely worth a visit!
N. H.
Lovely! First visit.... Very successful one- way route in operation, showing off the gardens to maximum effect.
M. C.
A really wonderful garden. Clean, spacious. Great to visit in summer months. Will try in autumn and spring.
H. C.
If you like a mixture of old history and art deco this is definitely the place. The gardens and grounds are very pretty and the Great hall is majestic. The art deco building attached has some truly wonderful marquetry and design wow factor. I enjoyed the visit very much.
L. M.
Lovely visit to Eltham Palace! Not everything was open due to covid bit will definitely be going back, lots to see and very helpful, informed volunteers!
A. H.
Beautiful Palace and gardens even in mid-October. Whoever has been in charge of Covid precautions doesn't seem to have trialled them; signs in the garden aren't consistent and restrictions in the house cause significant queuing where social distancing isn't considered. Shame. Could be simply improved by moving signs to read outside of rooms reducing time spend by single bubble groups in the room and also something to do other than crowd forward in the queue, also spacing indicators on the carpet would help without causing damage.
K. H.
Always a pleasure for a nice quiet stroll in the magnificent gardens. Then a picnic in front of the majestic and impetuous house with and absolute breath takeaway view of London. Its such a beautiful place. Secretly wish could be mine!
M. P.
Simple Gardens with a nice pond & rock garden around it.. Quiet, relaxing but Nothing special
J. L.
Lovely place, medieval ballroom was ok, but house is in art deco style! I love it.
A. R.
Long walk around the garden which is currently a one way system , lots of seating dotted around but some steep steps on the walk , if you struggle getting around ask staff they can help you shorten the route at certain points
J. C.
We love this place! Lovely gardens and beautiful building. There is a nice cafe with a playground that is a treat. Staff are always helpful and welcoming. During school holidays they usually have activities for children that's great.
L. A.
Although the Palace itself was closed the gardens are lovely and well maintained. The one way sistems in place and hand sanitiser station where well placed. Will be returning when palace re opens on 1st August.
P. K.
Wonderful mix of historic buildings and jazz age interiors. Gardens are beautiful and so close to London. Well worth a visit.
k.
Beautiful place to visit, lot's of very interesting facts to learn about this palace.
S. S.
Lovely day with beautiful gardens and views of London, lovely playground and coffee spot for the kids too
B. H.
Small gardens round the house, but worth a visit. Very hot day, but strangely very few visitors. The house is a super place, bit Frank Lloyd Wright style but on a lesser scale.
C. M.
I absolutely love this place! There's the beautiful gardens towards or play hide and seek in, the children's playground and picnic area, the lovely orangery to sit and enjoy a nice drink and food from the café and then there's the Palace with it's vast and interesting history to explore. A day out that all the family will enjoy 😊
P. T.
Great place go lots to see
L. S.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the house and gardens. The gardens were well maintained and a joy to walk round as was the house with it's beautiful art deco designs.
G. G.
The grounds are open and lovely. Lots of ground work that has made a lovely space to walk and picnic in. The house is currently closed to visitors. The childrens play area is excellent, full of happy kids by mid morning. The café is open for takeaway with lots of delicious hot and cold snacks. Also has a commendable white chocolate drink. Need to book online.
B. L.
Had a really lovely time here even though the house couldn't be open. The easter adventure was great for my little girl. I was most impressed that they had plant-based milk and my favourite coronation chickpea sandwiches available for lunch - unexpected but very welcome given I hadn't packed myself a lunch!
G. D.
Wish we could go there more often. Greag place to visit all year around, but better is when all is blooming. Very well looked after area. Plenty of space for children to run. The ditch around the palace ia wonderful too. Take some treats for fish, as it is plenty there abd and always hungry. There's a cafe next to the playground and few tables to have the picnic. Hole till summer to be able to walk in all the areas of the gardens.
P. S.
I really like the gardens, there's a great cafe, childrens play area and lots to explore. Currently under lockdown the house is closed but there's still plenty to entertain the kids for an hour or two. However unless you have an English heritage pass (which we do) I'd probably avoid since it is expensive to visit - £22 for two adults and 1 child. Hall Place which is nearby also has big gardens and they are free to roam.
m. m.
Lovely, interesting, art deco palace.Lots of place closed.
M. R.
Stunning gardens and a beautiful and unusual house. Kids love exploring the grounds and there's a brilliant outdoor play area by the cafe (which has lovely cakes). Well managed coronavirus restrictions.
D. B.
Wonderful and unique palace, with quite modern styling (as in early 20th century).
There is enough to see inside that it's still a good option, even in a rainy day.
S. L.
Visited gardens only. They were absolutely stunning. Sadly substandard cafe, loads of seating though, beautiful seating inside and out. Just the food and coffee was lacking.
J. M.
Beautiful Palace and gardens. Different to any other English heritage I have visited. Nice cafe
C. D. L. ᅳ. R. J.
Luxury garden
J. b.
Having lived nearby most of my life I have never visited here!!we booked on the Bank Holiday Monday to visit !!Beautiful place ,gardens are stunning to walk around really pretty and well kept !!Will definitely be going again!
R. S.
Mix of majesty of old and money of new to blend a unique home and estate to the more modern world Unfamiliar familiarity
K. Y.
Just as lovely and as interesting as ever...but some rooms were off limits owing to necessary Covid spacing.
Tea room/greenhouse quirte expensive - not good for a family of 4...4xsoups plus 2 drinks £32.00.
A. B.
Not as impressive as some of the other English heritage sites. But nice non the less.
B. W.
Excellent property, blend of 1930's and 16th century. Gardens small but interesting. Friendly EH staff.
D. H.
Due to Covid you have to book in advance, I did this the day before my visit, a nice but chilly day, the hot takeaway drinks from the cafe helped, not many people there so felt safe from infection.
J. C.
Disappointing. Grounds open but not kids' playground - why? Council play areas are open. Long trail, very nice but no advice or shortcuts for those whose walking is limited. We know times are difficult but English Heritage should know their market better.
j. b.
The gardens were great ....even though it was raining the entire day .The house fine but quite limited what can be seen under Covid regs
M. G.
Beautiful art deco house attached to a mediaeval hall. Unfortunately, due to COVID the audio-guides were not available, but the volunteers were extremely helpful and friendly.
We had a very nice walk in the grounds. The kids lived seeing the fish in the moat.
S. B.
This was our second visit to this interesting house and beautiful gardens and found much more work of restoration on the great hall over the lasr 20 years .
Also enjoyed our freshly made sandwiches in the cafe on our well earned rest break ..
N. R.
The palace itself is well maintained. It may not have a global historical presence but it does show 13th and 14th century royal charm
E. B.
Eltham Palace Gardens on a fresh November morning.
K. R.
Really enjoyed our afternoon here. Beautiful grounds but couldn't enter the palace due to lockdown restrictions.
W. S.
Brilliantly run with good one systems during the Convid 19 crisis. Takeaway cafe had good baguettes and lovely looking cake slices etc. The grounds & house are unusual for English Heritage being more stately home. The house is a world of contrast with its mediaeval hall and modernist, sumptuous house. Peaceful grounds great views to South London. Fab.
D. S.
Of course it is an enthralling place to visit but at the moment its not entirely clear why there are so many restrictions visiting the grounds and beautiful gardens in Covid 19 pandemic.
Art Deco as ever is mesmorising.
B. O.
Great place, lovely gardens, fantastic art deco interior, definitely worth a visit
J. W.
Absolutely fantastic architecture, views and gardens
K. B.
Lovely well managed visit
A. P.
Explore 19 acres of award-winning gardens, set against the backdrop of the historic Eltham Palace . Once a favoured medieval estate and then a Tudor royal residence, the palace and gardens were transformed into striking Art Deco style by eccentric millionnaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. Today, discover an intriguing mix of historical features as you stroll through the captivating grounds. Admire stunning herbaceous borders and planting and relax in the Rock Garden with its series of pools and cascades running down to the picturesque moat. Cross London's oldest working bridge, and enjoy a treat for the senses in the fragrant sunken rose garden. It’s the perfect place to relax and play on a summer’s day.
J. M.
Visited on a damp day but still very impressive. The gardens will be fabulous now with all the autumnal colours.
P. W.
We visit a lot of National Trust houses which are old and fascinating, but this is a modern house (well 90 years old) and in the art deco style. It is good that this has been preserved because it is an insite into a more modern society.
E. J.
Our history, absolutely amazing and the gardens are truly beautiful.
F. R.
Worth a look, nice gardens making a pleasant place to enjoy if you live in area
T. H.
Beautiful inside and out. Gardens well worth seeing each season but hugely expensive.
C.
Really interesting to see the life of millionaires. Loved the designs. A lot of the palace is closed off from Covid at this point in time. Not quite the day trip material.
P. H.
Having visited Eltham Palace some years ago, I was keen to see it again, and since I had heard that there were some new areas to view, including additional bedrooms and the extensive basement area, I couldn't wait. There have been considerable improvements since my previous visit, including an excellent cafe in the old greenhouses, which supplied us with lunch and afternoon coffee. The newly opened basement area gave a superb insight into the lives of the super rich from the 1930's through the 2nd world war, where they would shelter from the bombing, but what really fascinated me was the vacuum cleaner pump (quite small really!), that had inlets in all of the rooms so that they could be "hoovered" - an industrial system rarely seen in houses, then and now. To sum up: an excellent afternoon out.
E. G.
Lovely water garden with huge carps swimming around and the sunken garden is very charming. The terrace is quite delightful to meander around
D. R. W.
Unfortunately rather rainy for our visit but the gardens were looking spectacular at this time of year ( May ).
D. D.
An unusual historical Palace through a rich injection of capital in the 1930's. Fascinating.
B. C.
Excellent restoration of the Great Hall plus an amazing, avante garde main house that are both worth seeing. The formal gardens are looking good as well.
a. L.
Lovely gardens with a mixture styles very friendly fish in the pond
L. H.
Very pretty place. Took just pver hour to tour round. Took lots of photos. Interesting hostory.
J. R.
I would recommend visiting this place, although it is not very popular with tourists because it is not very famous
A. P.
Beautiful place to visit been on my doorstep for 48 years and I've never been but am glad I have now, well worth a visit
T. O.
Went on the ghost walk round the gardens on Halloween 🎃. Two great actors brought stories to life from around the gardens. Spooky 👻💀
J. H.
Fabulous house and gardens. Much ahead of its time. Love they have a clock that gets it time from the National Grid! Jealous of the library/studies.
N. C.
Very nice heritage site, shows how the very rich used to live in the 1930's
J. P.
They need to sort out their Covid realities! My 88 year old aunt had booked to enter at a specific time, but when we arrived at the house, there was a 45 minute line, in blazing sun!
C. K.
Lovely place, nice gardens. A great lesson on history and design. Good coffee shop. Good playground for kids. Really worth a visit
S. Y.
A beautiful place, i love visiting.
Great time with the family.
D. C.
Beautiful day to walk around the gardens and palace. Strange mixture of medieval and Art Deco. A fascinating history.
C.
A little busy and the café is expensive but the base entry fee is worth it because the grounds are beautiful and picturesque.
J. C.
Love this place. Beautiful setting, historic site. Peaceful.
B. B.
Can't believe I have not visited before as I come from SE London. What a great day, a real gem!
S. B.
Fascinating history. Not obvious from the nearby main roads, yet worth a visit.
L. D. (.
Lovely Historical House situated
In London suburb dating from Tudor to mid 20th century. Pleasant gardens., tea room in Visitor Centre and a very reasonable 2nd hand bookshop covering many subjects - worth a browse.
S. B.
Lovely palace and art decor house. Grounds and gardens need exploring. Pick a nice day.
H. C.
Covid arrangements (and today's high winds in very wooded grounds) well managed by very helpful guides. Superb building, well worth a visit.
B. B.
Beautiful gardens, great time there. Good playground and cafe.
C. W.
