Reviews of Golden Hinde

A beautiful ship. Really worth a visit to see how car we have come!
I really would have have not wanted to traven half away around the world on it but to look at it is totally fascinating.
Saddly we could not go on it due to works on going but still worth going to look from the outside.
5 stars go and see it!

Replica of the Golden Hinde, of Sir Francis Drake fame. Well worth a visit to see inside and the conditions that were endured as he sailed over 250,000 around the world.
Came across this by chance, and so glad I did, very interesting and the team doing the work are doing a fantastic job.
You can donate out of hours via the wireless reader, think it’s set at a minimum of £3

Nice replica of a galleon. It was originally known as Pelican, but Drake renamed it in honour of his patron, Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden hind.

Well worth a visit. Situated near the Shard and Borough market.

Great place to stomp about ... For the kids, I mean! It's incredible to think people actually sailed around the world in that! I can't imagine it would have been much fun ... Still, the sense of adventure would have been phenomenal! Just do it.

After a fabulous lunch at Borough Market, this
is a great find. The ship, a replica, is Real History.
You will be amazed as to how this little beauty
could have survived a journey around the world.
Clocking up over 100k miles it finally came to rest
here in 1996. Guided tours. Tickets available on
board. 'Pirate heaven' for kids. Continue walking
along the South Bank. There's so much more to see.

I’ve been coming here pre and post Covid to the evening musical events. Still very much enjoy it and hope to come to more, also visit for a proper day talk tour. Love how well kept it is and the smell of wood.
Will take more photos next time!

For such a small fee you get an awful lot for your money. The guides give frequent well told animated histories of the ship. The ship itself is fascinating to explore (mind your head!) It is mind blowing to know it (bear in mind it's a 50 year old reproduction) circumnavigated the globe with only 60 sailors on board led by Sir Francis Drake. Children will love this ship, with lots of nooks and crannies to explore.

I was visiting the Southwark area, so decided to have a look at The Golden Hind museum ship. As a ship famed for circumnavigation of the globe, I was really looking forward to visiting. I was very disappointed to learn that this museum is in fact a replica of the original ship. The ship is much smaller than I thought it would be and there's not an awful lot to see.

The first interesting thing is definitely the location. In the centre, between tall buildings and by the Thames, makes this corner of London quite special. The other interesting thing is the price, just £5 to have a visit. And it’s a pleasant time going through the ship (that’s a replica) and having a small understand of how people could have lived there. I definitely suggest to have a visit. After years it was the first time I got inside, and it was definitely worth it.

I do appreciate the work that has gone into creating the full size reconstruction of this 16th Century warship. However I can't give this more than 3 stars as a tourist attraction, particularly as I had just come from HMS Belfast which represents much better value for money than the £5 entry fee for the Golden Hind.
There is little to see inside this ship and when you descend to the main deck if you're anything above 5'10" you have to stoop. But when you get down to the gun deck, you really do have to squat.
It's a shame the ship is surrounded on three sides by buildings limiting the light coming inti the area. Only the north side is open and facing onto the river.

Wonderful detailed replica of Sir Francis Drake ship.
Golden Hind was a galleon captained by Francis Drake in his circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. She was originally known as Pelican, but Drake renamed her mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden hind (a female red deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage. A full-sized, seaworthy reconstruction is in London, on the south bank of the Thames.
Golden Hinde, a full-size reconstruction of the ship, was built by traditional methods in Appledore, Devon, and launched in 1973. Golden Hinde was the result of three years' research and construction. Since then, she has travelled more than 140,000 miles (225,000 km). She sailed from Plymouth on her maiden voyage in late 1974, arriving on 8 May 1975.
Since 1996, she has been berthed at St Mary Overie Dock, in Bankside, Southwark, London, where she is open to the public and hosts a range of educational programmes.

A smashing look back in time at a ship that played a really important part in our history, preserved in a hidden part of London surrounded by people who don't really understand its relevance but love the fact it's a boat with the gerkhin in the background. Climb aboard to have the "pirate" experience or ignore the fact everything is about parents trying to stop kids from crying and attempt to engage as an adult with an important relic.

In the Golden Hind, Sir Francis Drake's most famous ship, he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, on an epic expedition of discovery and adventure.
Drake had previously made a number of voyages to the Caribbean on trading missions and had carefully learned and recorded how to navigate around the West Indies on these previous travels.
Drake sailed between the five continents of Europe, Africa, North and South America and Asia, a journey taking him 1020 days. Five ships set sail in 1577 from Plymouth, the Golden Hind being the largest at 120 tons. Only the Hind completed the voyage and returned to Plymouth. The hardship endured in overcrowded and primive conditions was unbelievable with only 56 men returning with Drake three years after setting sail and 36,000 miles later.
The objective of Drake’s voyage (which was shrouded in secrecy) was to intercept the gold and jewels, which the Spanish were removing from South America (the Spanish ‘Main’) and shipping back to Spain across the Isthmus of Panama. In this Drake was spectacularly successful, capturing some twenty six tons of silver, half a ton of gold, thousands of coins, pieces of jewellery and jewels, emanating mainly from Peru and Bolivia - riches beyond his, and his backers' dreams. After intercepting his treasure off the coast of Peru, Drake could not set sail back along down South America because Spanish ships were awaiting his return. So, Drake proceeded north to California, onwards to Vancouver and then sailed over 1000 miles up to Alaska in an effort to return to England via the rumoured ‘North West Passage’ – an endeavour which it is alleged was at the specific request of Queen Elizabeth I, his voyage’s most important backer. Drake failed to find the Passage, which was not finally charted until some 250 years later, so he was left with no option but to sail west towards Japan.
This route took the Golden Hind across the open Pacific Ocean, past the north coast of Australia and onto Indonesia and the Spice Islands, where he uploaded six tons of cloves, themselves worth their weight in gold at that time. From there the Golden Hind proceeded south-west past India, Madagascar and around the African continent via the Cape of Good Hope.
Long given up for dead, the Plymouth residents were amazed to see Drake and the small ship return into Plymouth Harbour in September 1580. Once Drake had been reassured that Queen Elizabeth I was still alive, he landed the Golden Hind full of treasure and jewels, at nearby Saltash, and in the process became one of the most famous men in the world. The total value of the items on board was 160,000 Elizabethan pounds, or almost half a billion pounds in today's money.
Queen Elizabeth's share alone was more than the England's annual national debt and was nicknamed 'El Draco' or 'The Dragon' by the Spanish by whom he continued to be both feared and reviled.
Drake was duly knighted onboard in Deptford, London. Come aboard and explore the ship that was home to Drake and his crew of 70. Come aboard and experience the sights, sounds and smells of life aboard a Tudor ship. Feel the romance of the seas in the great age of sail.
The journey remains one of the greatest voyages in history. On a ship barely 100 feet long, weighing 120 tons, with rudimentary navigational aids, Drake had sailed right around the globe and brought back almost unimaginable treasures.

Along the banks of the River Thames you can find a reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake's ship, named the 'Golden Hinde II'. This is an nice replica of Drake's famous vessel used to circumnavigate the globe between 1577 and 1580. You can also take a tours aboard the Goldin Hind II ship, a fun activity for families. Look at the Golden Hinde website for more details and costs.
The Golden Hinde II is docked across from the historic Old Thameside Inn in Southwark. If not interested in the tours, this still makes a nice 5 minute stop if you intend to be in the area. Other interesting attractions nearby include the Southwark Cathedral and Borough Markets.
B. M.
Take the kids and let them see a this notable piece of nautical history. Not a grand vessel in terms of size but this makes it all the more impressive for the travels it undertook. I recently read of groups of children sleeping overnight and being treated to a 'life aboard experience' which seems interesting.
C. L.
The Golden Hind is an example of real history coming to life right in the heart of London. This old England 🇬🇧ship experience is a must for all tourist
L. B.
This reproduction of the golden hinde is stunning, it was the Apollo moonshot of the Elizabethan era, the original under the command of Sir Francis Drake sailed 250,000 miles on an around trip around the globe, that is the distance from the Earth to the Moon, a bold undertaking considering that due to the curviture of the Earth you can can see only fifteen miles such a brave undertaking for a small ship, brave men journeying into the unknown, the ship itself is amazing, I find it impressive compared to it's later naval counterpart HMS Belfast, smaller but no less impressive if you are visiting borough market it is only a short walk from Southwark Cathedral and admire the courage of the sailors who ventured into the great blue unknown to discover the world in a tiny ship.
X. A. T.
We had great time here. We went at half term and saw a shadow puppet show which was really exciting and creative. Don't miss the tour! They told many interesting facts about the ship and her voyage. Lovely time with my 2 kids
-. I.
Some doors were locked which is unfortunate.I get it, they need some storage space but maybe store things that are in a large room on a small ship somewhere else.
T. W. (.
Complete period appropriate replica of Drake's Ship Currently in drydock and undergoing some repairs. Fully seaworthy and was used to recreate his journeys in the modern era. Low price of entry (entirely devoted to funding maintenance and construction) and very knowledgeable and engaging staff. The ship is small, but visitors are given free range to explore with only some small areas (either under repair or storage) off limits.
If you have any interest in the history of the age of sail, this is highly recommended.
L. S.
Great ship. Friendly staff, gave leaflet with lots of info. Left to look round on our own. Very relaxing in a very convenient location.
A. G.
Really interesting to look around a great replica of the Golden Hinde. There are different talks available, pirate themed, and more historical. Pirate event was enjoyed by the kids and still a lot of good facts taken away. Get ready to crouch low on the gun deck!
C. V.
A beautiful ship, full of history. Be warned the gun deck is very low but a lot of fun
J. W.
I've walked past this ship many times over the years and regret not having gone in sooner. Much to learn and the guides are very well informed, so do pick their brains. I can't imagine spending three years on board such a cramped vessel. Go see for yourself.
W. C.
A nice ship by the Thames.
M. P.
Really delightful attraction- it's a replica of Sir Francis Drake's galleon. Very hands-on, the kids adored it. The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable and really encouraged the kids' interest and active participation.
j. w.
such a historic place lovingly recreated. this ship sailed over 100,000 miles! amazing experience and great value...take the kids..
R. T.
A beautiful ship. Cool place for tourism.
K. D.
Cool but could do with clean up around the ship.
J. T.
Always a good draw this one. Strangely smaller than one might expect perhaps. Funnily enough, it's this plaque on a different subject that caught my eye? Not sure if you can zoom in to read. Worth it if possible! 🤭
K.
You've got to go down below to understand the conditions endured. Great to have such an historically correct model to give us an understanding of conditions past
m. l.
We had a nice visit there well explained and nice people at the entrance. You'll need about 20 minutes here to see everything.
s. i.
A very nice ship but smaller than I expected. I think it would be great for preschoolers as there is an activity to find certain things on the ship.. my boys are 9 and 12 so were done in about 15 mins!! There was no guide available at the time we went but maybe if we had one we could have stayed a bit longer and be more informed about what we were looking at.
O. N.
Very well done replica, it looks like the real thing as far as I am concerned. A map shows the route this ship took to be the first to circumnavigate the globe. Amazing expedition, amazing adventurers hundreds of years ago, from London, of all cities.
S. C.
Great replica of this boat. It has people dressed up in costume on certain events. A really good in-site into what the scale of the boat was. I would recommend a visit and it's in a nice area to explore afterwards.
C. L.
This has been on my London "to-do" list for over 20 years. Finally, in November 2019 we visited the Golden Hinde and were incredibly impressed. This is a must-do for children and adults alike! We took our 8 year old and he loved it as much as we did.
We visited the Golden Hinde on a Sunday, which is a "Family Day" offering four fantastic talks, lasting approx 15 minutes each, and rotating between different sections of the ship. The talks were detail-rich, bringing history to life, and kept all ages riveted, which was impressive. The guides were also very knowledgeable, friendly and had stacks of enthusiasm.
A visit to the Golden Hinde is an absolute must, for all ages, but particularly from ages 7+, though there were many younger ones who enjoyed it too and stayed engaged. We loved our visit, thank you so much!
G. S.
A very tiny recreated boat, presently being refitted. You do get to explore all of the decks, cabins, and rooms. Great staff to answer your questions. It is great to see the details of the woodwork and rigging up close. It takes about an hour max if you take your time to study everything. Beware of school groups which can be massive in size on such a tiny ship.
R. V.
Great talks about the ship. My son loved looking around the ship and learning about it.
A. L.
Enjoyed this visit, had to be very careful of the low decks and explored most of the lower parts on my knees. With several floors and top deck to visit was full of place to explore and cannons! Watching the younger visitors the large number of guns on board certainly got their imagination going. As the ship is compact its not suitable for wheel/push chairs , there is a push chair park for those with little ones. Costing only £5.00 was such a bargain. Easy to find near to London Bridge doesn't have any toilets or cafe but there are plenty very close by. A must see for all ages, younger children will love it.
A. G.
Aye, aye Sir! We visited them today, with a 5 and a 3 yrs old to be part of the crew (the event called: Living History Tours). They played excellently, the kids were involved in to weighing the anchor and preparing and (pretending to) firing a cannon (err... minion, I mean), or be patients at the barber surgeon (brr...). The adults were no less enjoying the show, and we learnt a lot about living and sailing in those days. Also heard the story of the famous journey. Definitely worth the time and money and I do recommend it. The ship is not step free and the headroom is extremely low in the ship, so adults be prepared to bend a lot. The stairs are steep, but we could manage them with the kids with a bit of care.
L. W.
If you are into history then this one is must. Board the replica vessel and understand the voyage as it travelled round the world replicating Sir Francis Drakes journey. We had a very informative guide around the boat who gave us a very in depth idea as to how the boat and men on it lived and survived whilst out at seas. Amazing facts like they could sail for 118 days before docking at land to refill foods. I attended the boat with a group of school children aged 9-10, and I've also told my 7 year old about the boat and now she wants to go. I would go back again.
N. R.
Def worth a visit. This has sailed around the world.
J. G.
Great experience to see how the living conditions were for the 80 sailors who would have been on board (not great for them!). The staff were really friendly and in costume. They took the time to explain how a cannon was loaded and fired including the interesting fun facts. Great day out with small kids who were studying Sir Francis Drake so perfect for their homework.
E. L.
Great thing to see. Kids love it. Ceilings below deck are really low. We also went to see a poet show which I recommend you get a ticket for and arrive at the right time for. Without puppet show it might if been a bit non eventful for very young children.
S. G.
We didn't even know this ship was there until I was looking for somewhere to take John on his birthday. A little piece of history hidden away in London, interesting and not pricey to go aboard, I love visiting all the ancient bits of history we have around us.
J. W.
This is interesting and fun for kids, worth a visit for tourists, and fascinating for maritime history geeks. Within a short walk from London Bridge station, from Southwark Cathedral, and from the Borough Market, so it fits really well into a sightseeing day out. Not too expensive. You will probably not need more than an hour for this.
K. E.
Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Staff were VERY attentive and very keen to offer details about the history. Our child of 6 years loved it and the 'in-character' dressed up Pirates/ ship mates/ crew.
Very reasonable price and overall a very worthwhile attraction.
F. P.
Absolutely lovely. Get aboard and enjoy a walk around the ship. Compared to today's ships, it seems impossible that this little beauty could carry enough crew and provisions to sail the seas.
H. A.
I've heard about this for years and seen the ship from the other side of the river, but had put off going until now. The experience blew us away! It was very genuine, not touristy or opportunistic.. Our two sons (5&8) loved every gory detail that was shared (as did us parents!), the tour guides were excellent! Funny and immersive, and the information was top notch. I highly recommend this for a great day out with the kids!
N. K.
Took a group of 43 Y9 and Y10 students on a History trip here and the tour guide was amazing! Funny, relatable, and really brought the ship to life for them! Not only that, but they were very understanding when we kept adding students to our invoice, right up till the day before our visit AND were very accommodating when we were half an hour late due to traffic! Really can’t recommend this place enough!
A. R.
Perfectly conserved and very nice to visit. Perfect for kids and family it's also possible to attend a little spectacle. Just the rules to get in is something very strange. You have to pay for the ticket in a shop not so close, they give you a code number to unlock the opening door...
A. D.
Reconstruction of original ship, had done more sailing than original. It's so tiny, low roofs. Very interesting seeing what dark cramped conditions they would have lived in. Even Captain's room tiny. Repairs being carried put so scaffolding around it.
H. K.
I was really surprised when I walked passed this ship on my stroll along the river. I didn't expect such a beautiful and old looking ship to be there. It is only a replica of Sir Francis Drakes ship Golden Hind but it is still very beautiful. Makes me wonder if the original ship had ever been on this spot as well.
I. W.
Beautiful. A truly unique experience.
J. A.
Anyone who has paid a visit to Captain Cooks replica ship and thought it was small is really going to find out what the word small actually means. A Hobbit would be hard pressed to stand up on this ship 😊.
That said, it's a good family day out.
It is open Monday to Sunday from 10am until 6pm (but do check out their website as they do close it for Private Bookings ).
Admission. Adults £5.00
Children (3 to 16) and Senior Citizens £3.00
(Children under 3 Free)
Events running through out the year which cost extra. (All details on their website )
The attraction is NOT wheelchair accessible.
There is No dedicated car park and the attraction is located in the dread zone, I mean Congestion Charge Zone 😣.
Still as I have said a good family day out.
H. H.
Fantastic to see as you turn the corner. Unique site for London. Ultimately not much on board as to its history so could do more there but with occasional events the ticket price is reasonable. If you want to make a day of it take in the clink prison round the corner as well as seeing this
J. M.
Really wonderful morning. Four year old grandson totally thrilled with pirate training. Plan to return with his friends one day. You have been warned! Seriously BRILLIANT. Must visit.
T. V.
replica of the famous ship which itself has sailed almost round the world. gives an idea of the deprivations and hardship these men had on these ships. claustrophobic, intense and humbling to see just how a small vessel can change the world. a little strange to be surrounded by offices now but still worth a visit even if to support repair and maintenance work.
R. F.
The Golden Hinde is a beautiful ship and worth a visit but at this time (June 2019), there is some renovation work going on that might distract or reduce your enjoyment. Check with the organisation first. Based by the Thames, the area around the Golden Hinde is vibrant and busy. Lots more to see and do nearby after seeing the ship.
M. d. C.
Good for the price: £5. There weren't too many tourists when I visited, which made the experience better. It was a good opportunity to walk around the ship's decks slowly and see things in detail. The staff was polite and helpful, with the exception of the ticket office.
Do not expect a History lesson.
In fact, I was shocked to hear the young lady at the ticket office say she thought this had been the first ship to circumnavigate the world! I actually heard a tour guide, unrelated to the Golden Hinde, say that same thing to a group of tourists. I was so shocked and couldn't help but intervene - quite rude, I suppose. I guess soon they'll be saying John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) discovered the Americas.
The Golden Hinde would benefit from having a pre-recorded audio tour. I would've paid £2 extra for that. It would be interesting to have a map show the voyage of circumnavigation, Drake 's bio, and accounts of his raids.
As a teacher (sadly not a History teacher but an enthusiast of the Discoveries) I can say that the Golden Hinde could easily be turned into a top educational and entertaining option for school trips. What did sailors eat and drink? How did they find their geographic positions using maps and the stars? What is the trajectory of a cannonball? How much can you load the ship, considering it's displacement? How did they fight? Who did they fight and why?
I wish there had been more History and more stories.
Simply put, no story, no soul. It's urgent to write and teach the visitor the stories of Golden Hinde.
B. R.
The Golden Hinde is a replica of a famous ship or galleon to be precise, that circumvented the world with Francis, Sir Francis Drake at the helm somewhere in 1578. But all that you can google.
Our adventure on this replica was more exciting than the sailors who sailed her. We were locked onboard the ship, unable to get off of the galleon. The glass door could ( at least in June 2017)only be opened by pressing a button, which was or is, inconspicuously places at waist height. Tried as we did to push and pull, the blasted door wouldn’t open. So we thought of doing the next best thing in London - call the police for assistance. Fortunately, we were saved the embarrassment when someone on the outside pointed out the red button to us and we were free!
The galleon has replicas of cannons and what have you and is a great place to take young children. What a history lesson is waiting to happen.
By all means, take your cameras along.
C. W.
Fantastic. Visited for an event for Burns Night and it was brilliant.
The ship is a fantastic recreation of the original and opens your eyes to the condition of living on a ship. Great value.
r. s.
great fun and only a fiver, climb aboard and get an authentic feel for how things were back in the day, hope you didnt mind the ahoy there as i walked up the gangway
N. R.
Really good place....the Scale model is awesome. Looks just like the real one. On the banks me Thames river. It is a must visit for those who are interested in maritime history and sea adventure.
F. Á.
Copy of the one of the most ship in the world. The famous Drakes pirate ship.
S. M.
A completely cheesy pirate experience. Perfect for keeping office workers entertained in the spirit of team bonding. We were taken good care of by the actors and bar staff, and the drinks were good. It was just super silly.
l. k.
It gives you a really good idea of the life in Drake's time. Also,it is a very relaxed atmosphere. You can sit or lie down wherever, while imagining how pirates lived a few centuries back, the battles they fought and the riches they won
J. B.
Great place to visit but not accessible for weelchair users.
I. B.
I didn't go inside the ship so I am not sure what is in it as I don't carry money on me. However there is a little history about Francis Drake an english explorer who set off to the Pacific and came back with treasures large enough to pay off English debt at that time.
There also seem to be a few works being done on the ship as there were wood cutting going. From this place you can make your way to borough market. London Bridge underground station is also near by.
J. A.
Went on a school trip here with a class of 30. The kids really enjoyed the experience. It was quite cramped so anyone with mobility issues need to be aware of this. Great experience and very informative!
D. N. J.
Great place to stop for a pint by the river after a long day of exploring!
P. N.
Wonderful replica of the world famous Golden Hinde. In dry dock by the riverside on the Southbank near Borough market. You can get on board and have a look around. Great sightseeing attraction and tourist interest.
B. P.
For all his exploits and heroics in the name of the crown, Sir Frances Drake was given a pretty small boat. But that's what makes the tour so fascinating. Very well handled and if you have questions they will stand there all day answering.
R. R.
I am a history and Sir Francis Drake fan so I really enjoyed being on board a full size replica complete with cannons. You will be surprised how many crew was on board this small galleon.
P. D.
Way overpriced for a less than mediocre quality pint of guinness. Considering they were playing the 6 nations it should have been better.
The views and the fried pickles were the only redeeming factors.
s. g.
Brilliant day @ The Golden Hind, we did the Francis Drake Fun day, the kids had an amazing time, the two tour guides (very funny, engaging actors) were wonderful and had us and the kids in stitches all afternoon. The kids learnt so much in a fun way especially my 11 yr old who is currently studying the Tudors at school. Could not recommend this experience enough!
R. V.
Lovely little attraction. My 5 year old loved it. Good value for money, next time we go, we'll take a friend so he can properly play pirates.
T. T.
Hidden Hind. A nice little surprise for those with inquisitive feet.. So close to Borough Market. Its a case of turn a different corner,,,, London has become a much better place near the Thames River embankments. It's always changing,, dragging away from the previous decades of dereliction, into a diverse cosmopolitan plaything with something for most tastes,, young and old.
p.
Watch out for the run tasting on the boat :-) worth it !!
A. T.
We did the family sleepover - great actors playing period parts, fun, educational adventure. The Tudor area stew for dinner was also very good!
I. G.
Its strange to walk along the Southbank and as you turn a corner from the alley there is this magnificent ship in a dockway. It is a very popular tourist magnet and great for families with young children to enjoy.
T. H.
Great boat to visit but must be quite agile to get up and down between decks. Also a £5 does seem a bit much for what you get
l. m.
Lonica was really nice and helpful when I visited
C. D.
W j.g at a wonderful way to spend an hour or so. Great for kids. The middle deck is not so great for adults (very low). My 7y thoroughly enjoyed it.
P. G.
Recreation of the golden Hide, not much to see other then the ship, the ceiling are very low, and expecially on the gun deck, (mind your head 🤕). Entrance is £5 but won't take long to veiw the ship.
H. N.
A replica of the Golden Hinde with tonnes of conservation, resources, and timber. The first English vessel to circumnavigate the globe. No mean salt. Five hundred years ago, there were no maps, longitude was unknown, no GPS, 5G wireless, or electricity. But the Golden Hinde returned to London in one piece. I have visited the Mary Rose, HMS Victory, and the Cutty Sark tea clipper, in Greenwich. Enormous financial resources and conservation efforts have been invested in these maritime treasures. Once again, I like to thank the individuals, institutions and charities behind these enormous vessels. Conservation have also revived rare engineering and maritime skills in Britain. Never lose these rare skills and heritage. Every day, hundreds of visitors fly into Britain, for a once in a lifetime treat. Britain's got maritime talents in the Mary Rose, Sutton Hoo, HMS Victory, Cutty Sark, and no doubt, the Golden Hinde. Please conserve these maritime treasures. Thank you.
R. B. -. E. k.
Love sail ships.
This just oozes history written all over it although this is a reconstruction.
You can start to imagine life as a 16th century explorer aboard the Golden Hinde II.
A faithful full sized reconstruction of the ship Sir Francis Drake used to circumnavigate the globe between 1577-80. Must have been really tough out there on the high seas and what an adventure, no satellites, nothing but the ability to navigate by the sun, stars and guess-timating wind directions.
This looks very beautiful lit up at night.
A. T.
Fun visit on our London Pass. Spent around 25 minutes here but missed the theatrical guided tour which looked good for children.
A. R.
Wonderful venue for my son’s birthday party. All the children had a fabulous time learning how to be a pirate. Highly recommend it!
E. T.
Great fun on the pirate ship, ooh, argh, me hearties. The actors created a brilliant story and we were part of it.. bit cramped though but it's part of the charm
S. O.
Nice ship and a little bit of a secret gem here in London. The ticket price is fair. However it lacks huge swaths of information once on board. Could do with a lot of signage.
n. v.
Very impressive replica of the 16th century ship Sir Francis Drake used to circumnavigate the globe between 1577-80. It is located in the historical Bankside with stunning views of the river Thames, we only saw it from the outside but could see the actors on board in period dress which I think is a great addition to a tour.
D. V.
It's a nice view on the Thames but not very much seats on the bar side so we had to sit outside in the cold.
P. M.
A very good attraction for families. The children had a great time exploring the ship for clues in the treasure hunt.
S. G.
Had an awesome time wandering around this ship and learning about its history. I walk by it often, so it was a treat to finally go inside!
J. A.
Great historical ship, its free to look around.
R. C.
Went today. 100% recommended not even the rain could put a downer on the day. Trust me you have to give it a good. Thank you. P. S they're fantastic with the kids
M. M.
Such a cool thing to have in the area. I think it costs like £2 to board the dry docked galleon and it quite small but it's so cool and quite the experience.
H. V.
So pretty and to be able to see the restoration for what it is, amazing.
G. P.
My daughter loved it and it's a great step back in time. Lack of staff interaction with guest to explain how it was used and the history is a pity as for the price, it should offer more or be cheaper.
S. L.
An excellent way to have a pirate ship adventure with your kids on the South bank. It is also a popular venue for private birthday parties.
P. R.
Very interesting, easy to find, the entire of Southwark is interesting. Wiil go back
L. D.
Great tour! Make sure you take the time to join a tour. Without it there is little context. Super story telling!!
M. B.
It is interesting when you come here through the narrow alleys and then find this ship just standing there. Definitely worth taking a detour from main roads.
S. W.
Much better than expected, well worth a trip for a year 10 old studying Sir Francis Drake. Top notch staff to boot!
R. B.
The Golden Hinde was the Elizabethan ship in which Francis Drake hero of the Spainish Armada, circumnavigated the world... claiming California for England on the way around...Its located in historic Southwark...between the reconstruction of Shakespeare's, Globe theatre and the ancient flint stones of Southwark cathedral...its a stones throw from the great Victorian borough market..and a short walk to London bridge and the City
C. W. I.
I wasn’t looking for this place. I was killing time before a conference and stumbled across it.
I didn’t have time to visit it, but I like a masted ship and have an interest in pirates of the second golden age. Sir Walter was of the first golden age, but close enough!
G. C.
Today at The Golden Hinde a man in traditional C16 sailing attire and tricorn hat told that pirates were being shot there for a film...
C. “. W.
Brilliant. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed. A naval career could follow. She is only 6.
L. D.
Get lots of talks about Francis 'the privateer' Drake. Great to learn about what life was like then on board the Golden Hinde.
M. L.
Interesting bit of history near to Borough market.
K. J.
It doesn't take long to see the whole ship, but it was pretty cool to be on an accurate replica that has sailed so far.
A. P.
Husband wanted to go here because he played Uncharted. This ship is absolutely beautiful.
P. J.
Fun for a jaunt. The poor old sailors didn’t have much headroom, but they all became millionaires by today’s standards - those who survived of course!
T. S.
An actual pirate ship you can visit and learn about cannons, life on such a ship, and of course the epic voyage of the Golden Hinde.
S. T.
Very educational - I loved this ship in LB as a child and my son loves it now also :) Sir Francis Drake here we come!
B. N.
We had such a lovely time on our visit to the Golden Hinde. Would recomend to anyone looking for a educational afternoon.
n. l.
Fantastic, the staff are brilliant, and for some good history in fun filled manner, it is a must....even better if your lucky enough to go on for a PARTY!!!
A. F.
The staff were as impressive as the ship. Very knowledgeable and really added to the visit/experience
C. M.
I took my son 12 years ago when he was 4 for the overnight visit and still remember it. Brilliant for any little pirate!!
K. A.
Daughter loved it... Captain Hook and Peter as entertainment... Working the guns and dropping anchor as well...
S. C.
We had such a lovely time on our visit to the Golden Hinde. Would recomend to anyone looking for a educational afternoon.
F. D.
As I was incorrectly named Francis during my primary school years, I have an affinity for Sir Francis Drake, and as a traveller I feel a closer conection now. This replica, yes it is a replica has actually sailed on the journey Sir Francis embarked on, twice one more thaen the original bark.
C. A.
We had a tour with two absolutely brilliant guides, myself and my 9 yr old were taught about what happens if you steal a chicken, have a headache, how to fire a canon...absolutely brilliant
J. B.
Great ship and a good place to take children. Good history and the ship replica is fascinating.
R. S.
Great for a quick visit. Value for money. My 5 yr old even claimed to see the ships captain!
R. D.
Absolutely fantastic. Recommended. Great acting to bring the history of the boat and pirates to life
D. J.
Enjoyed our tour of this fascinating replica which has sailed more miles than the original! Disappointed at the lack of interpretation to explain what you are looking at.
D. S.
Fascinating to step on a ship which dates back hundreds of years & to see space and conditions that sailors would come up against
J. D.
What the hell this old boat is doing here ?? This is London always a surprise between two buildings, I advise to go to see it and enjoy the view.
D. F.
Interesting replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship
G. C.
Very friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgeable crew who kept our little powder monkees interest on the tour.
M. T.
A nice informal experience. Banged my head on the gun deck which was ok -beats the usual health and safety nonsense.
R. M.
The Golden Hinde II is a beautiful replica, and a very lovely museum to visit which is popular to very excited children.
R. D. D. C.
Lovely maintained replica of Drake's flagship...an absolute must for a saunter along the Thames!
M. H.
Always a pleasure to visit for both young, old and inbetween. Nice people with lots of patience for visitors.
M. S.
great for kids and adults of all ages
M. R.
A very interesting little visit but not suitable for small children or adults who can't bend and crouch easily (the gun deck is only about 1.3 metres high).
J. C.
Great fun for the kids, especially as Cap'n Hook and Smee were roaming the area!
T. R.
A nice stop when, especially when you are traveling with children. If you have a London pass it's free.
M. B.
Nice place for a rest and people watching.
J. D.
Staff were really good at getting kids engaged and happy to humour even the most inquisitive little minds 😍

A shrine to British history, beautiful cobbled streets and river views in the middle of a bustling part of town.
D. A.
Very interesting but not much to explore considering it is £5 a person
J. T.
Great recreation! An absolute must with kids! Just remember to duck below deck!

(Translated) Walking along the Thames promenade in the Southwark district, you can see a copy of the Tudor Golden Hind era galleon, positioned in a small basin; the ship was captained by Sir Francis Drake, a famous pirate, who was never opposed by the crown; on the contrary, he was knighted for having stolen a substantial treasure from the Spaniards; maybe you can visit, but the entrance was closed.

(Translated) Lovingly emulated flagship of Francis Drake. It was very faithfully reproduced. It is located just off London Bridge and is easily accessible on foot and by public transport. Admission is entirely for the benefit of the ship. There is also an explanation of the ship in German.

(Translated) The Golden Hinde was the ship of Sir Francis Drake. In London stands; Hidden between houses is a replica of the legendary sailing ship. ⛵🏝️ Entry was included in the London Pass. At the entrance we received a leaflet with all important background information and data about the ship. Unfortunately, the ship undergoes major restoration work. "Nevertheless, the ship was freely walkable, it felt a bit cramped on such a ship. 😨 You could look at the captain's cabin, inspect the cannons below deck and down to where the crew lived. Beware of the low ceilings! I am not the greatest and have always had to duck. 🙄 Whether it's worth a visit, everyone has to decide for themselves. We were just half an hour there.

(Translated) The replica of the British circumnavigator under Sir Francis Drake needs helping hands - but you should be free from giddiness, for example to carry out painting work on the mast - and have nothing against curious spectators! Great for young and old - if you want to see more ships, you can find them in the Maritime Museum in Greenwich!

(Translated) A sightseeing tour that is affordable for everyone at £ 5 unlike other London attractions. It is unimaginable that up to 80 people were here. (Translated) Replica of the Elizabethan flagship. Since 1973, this ship has twice sailed around the world. So it's done twice as much nautical miles as Frances Drake's original ship. The states of 1577 must have been claustrophobic! A guide would have been good, but unfortunately it does not exist. Currently there are repairs to the ship, but it can be easily visited. Admission £ 5, open from 10 am. Is at the London Pass but free.

(Translated) Reproduction of Sir Frances Drake's ship. Very entertaining for children who love to see the different rooms and put themselves in the place of the sailors of the time. There must be moments of overwhelm due to the number of visitors, but we entered one day in August with London packed half an hour after the closing of the attraction and we barely met 6 people on the tour. It is smaller than you expect, but recommended.

(Translated) The Golden Hind was an English galleon (a frigate) best known for his circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. He was originally known as The Pelican, but was renamed by Drake in the middle of the trip, in 1578, as he prepared to enter the Magellanic Strait, calling him Golden Hind to greet his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest armorial was of 'hind' gold (the heraldic term of a female deer). Hatton was a major sponsor of Drake's journey.

(Translated) Must visit if you are going with children. It is a bit expensive for what it offers (about € 12 for 2 adults and a child) but the free visit to the deck, the cellar, the cabin, the Drake pirate lounge, being able to handle the rudder ... deserves the shame at certain ages when Peter Pan or Jack Sparrow have already made a dent in the little ones. It is a replica but it has really sailed. Explanatory brochure in English. The poorly characterized sailors give a couple of safety rules and are open to any questions from children or adults. They have a program of guided tours, treasure hunting, cannon management ... but they are not easy to come across.

(Translated) Replica of the pirate ship Francis Drake. Due to its location, many people pass by and take photos, because it is a beautiful walk along the south bank of the Thames. And around there are many shops and cafes. It's funny to see, although it is nothing to write home about either.

(Translated) Excellent reproduction of the ship of Francis Drake, who has the dubious honor of leading a stage of piracy that tried to weaken the power of Spain in the New World. For decades they attacked and razed the fields and towns of Hispanic America. Drake did not hesitate to assassinate any suspect to conceal any loot. Among his "achievements" is the total destruction of Cartagena de Indias at a time when Spain and England were at peace but allowed and even paid for by Queen Elizabeth I.

(Translated) Fun to get into such an old and famous ship. Very crowded to visit, especially under decks at the cannons and at the bottom where storage and gunpowder were stored, got almost half crawl space. Fun to see the captain's cabin, etc. Worth a little visit anyway.
