We visited on a Tuesday morning and it was east to prebook the free tickets, and there were few others in the gallery or seeing the Roman Amphitheatre. You can see it in 30-60 minutes depending on how much detail you want to see/read, but it is worth a visit as it has some interesting paintings, a few tidbits on London history, and the (tiny) Amphitheatre ruins.
It also was fairly accessible with a lift, had a coat check area, and clean toilets.

This is a gem of a (working) museum. We were here two days before the Lord Mayor Day celebrations, so got to see some of the preparations for the event.
In addition to the many functions held here it actually has a wonderful art gallery, that has a good collection of Pre-Raphaelite artwork, among others. There was also a temporary exhibition about Cole Porter which was good and quite popular.
The staff were first rate and very friendly. I have to give a special mention to Errol who really went that extra mile to ensure we had a fantastic visit. He's really passionate about the Guildhall and has a lot of knowledge about the history, and present day workings of the institution.
It does close early, and the last entry is 3:00, so get there early to avoid disappointment.

It's an ok gallery with a decent collection of paintings, mainly from the Victorian era. In the undercroft section they have a mixed collection of contemporary paintings along with some rather lovely older ones which show London back in the 17th century, which can be interesting if that's what you're into. In one of them for example you can see the old Blackfriars' Bridge. The Roman amphitheatre is less impressive than so many other Roman ruins elsewhere. It only consists of a bunch of stones in a semi circle so definitely don't expect the Colosseum. Despite its initial dated look, the installation around it it's actually still very effective and nicely thought out. It's nice for a visit, staff is friendly and helpful. There is no bar but the souvenir shop sells bottled water. The souvenir shop is cute with a decent selection of merchandise. I only just wish they had more books about their collection of paintings and the amphitheatre.

I saw the Facebook advertising the Noel Coward exhibition, I thought this would be a great exhibition to attend so clicked on it to find out more. It lead me to a website that told me I had to make a booking which was easy to use. I don't mind having to book as it means a venue wouldn't be too full during this time of pestilence. I found the venue and booking in was easy with the email they sent me. The exhibition had beautiful photos, clothing and information about Noel Coward and I really enjoyed myself. I will attach the photos I took to remember such a wonderful exhibition. I encourage others to attend to enjoy the life and times of Noel Coward. Please click like if you enjoyed my review. Thank you so much.

Love this FREE Hidden Gem Gallery In London. A short walk from bank station but totally worth a look. It’s filled it’s huge art pieces dating back to the 14th century. The vibrancy and clear order of the painting can make anyone stare for minutes. My personal favourite for solo trips in London. Great staff and friendly security. To the guy who told me about Henry the 8th I hope you see this review, because you were amazing! Will be returning to take amazing photos in the courtyard and it’s FREE!!

My husband and booked a visit for the gallery, mainly because we wanted to see the Roman Amphitheatre, but once we were there we found they have an exhibit about the Wampanoag, an Native American tribe which we found fascinating learn about them.
The galleries are lovely maintained and the security guard and the receptionist we talked, were very helpful and friendly.
L. P. E.
Amazing collection of paintings and sculptures dedicated to British themes. It is not a museum its properly a gallery. I enjoyed the visit and plan to do it again.
P. V.
Visited the Noel Coward exhibtion and it was brill, facilities and the exhibition and information was well worth the 2hrs I spent wandering around, no pressure to hurry up and plenty of space, loved all the exhibits of Noel Cowards life and enjoyed watching the videos and interesting info that was new to me, will definitely book to see again!
D. J.
An excellent free exhibition of Noël Coward's work and effects.

The gallery is a nice size, with a range of exhibitions that relate to the history of the gallery and surrounding city of London. What made our visit so wonderful was the free tour given by Alison. It lasted around 45 mins and was engaging and so so interesting, explaining not only the paintings but the history of the gallery itself. Great & cheap experience. Don’t forget to visit the amphitheater ruins below!

I loved immensely my recent visit to the Guildhall Gallery. The art gallery is very small, chamber, intimate, but nevertheless very nice and, with love and intelligence, furnished. In the basement, under the building of the Guildhall, Roman London's Amphitheatre for Roman gladiatorial battles was discovered, just think about it, dated 43 AD, date fascinates itself. The amphitheatre was not only excavated and archaeological researched but also an exhibition was organized, right at the site of archaeological excavations and using the original ruins of the amphitheatre. What fascinated me and at the same time surprised me is that, the amphitheatre is located under the building of the Guildhall, built long later, how it was done, perhaps the building was moved during the excavations, and then moved back. The gallery itself, although small, left a lot of positive impressions. I would also like to especially note the store at the gallery in which a vast range of high-quality material assembled and would be useful for gritting occasions.
D. D.
A lot of theatrical Victorian Art in the upper gallery, my preference is more the lower gallery with more modern works about London and of course, the Roman Amphitheatre is impressive and of interest
C. D.
A very decent gallery. Though the collection is smaller than some in London it is laid out well and great to view at less busy times.
The remains of the Roman Amphitheatre are just something else though. Really well displayed and well worth the visit. The rest of the related displays about the history of London and its expansion are well designed as well.
Large parts of the building offer disabled access.
The place is always kept clean and tidy.
J. M.
Went for the Roman Amphitheater which is a very cool experience but the art gallery is top quality in its own right!! Not crowded and the staff are extremely helpful and polite! Highly recommended!
M. W.
An excellent venue, walking distance from Bank Tube Station. We attended the Noel Coward exhibition, highly recommended. I left knowing more than I expected to learn about the life and work of Noel Coward.
I. T.
Worth visiting if you are in the area. Entrance is free, and you get to explore the gallery as well as the ruins of the Colosseum in the basement level. The gallery is well organized with explanations on the wall.
The place is one of the less busy attractions and the staff are very friendly.
S. S.
Fantastic building and reception well worth attending the evening event
A. G.
A lovely spot! A real hidden gem amongst Londons many many art galleries. Being so close to some of the main attractions it is totally worth coming to and it’s mostly free too.
Some fantastic drawings on what london may have been and the environment of the gallery is spacious and welcoming and not at all sterile which is great.
Good accessibility and some security checks.
If you want to know more about London then visit here.
It’s also home to some roman ruins, which in all fairness was really boring, but if you’re a super fan of that kind of archeological then you’re sure to love it.
M. M.
Quite a surprise really as I never expected the art works here to be so good. It's free entry, I was also very luck as I arrived just as a "Free Tour" was beginning. Our guide (Amber) was very bubbly, fun and enthusiastic. She brought a selection of the paintings alive by explaining the background to the painting and her interpretation of the scene portrayed. The gallery is represented over 4 levels, with the basement level given over to the archaeological revelation of the roman ruins of an Amphitheatre.
The free tours of the gallery are on these days and times: Tuesday, Friday, Saturday: 12.15, 13.15, 14.15 and 15.15.
There is a lift providing Wheelchair access to all floors.
J.
Very pretty experience. Not busy & free!
R. N.
We went to see the Noel Coward exhibition and I must say for a free exhibition it was amazing! The building itself is beautiful with the history and remains of the Roman amphitheatre to be seen on the lower ground level. The staff were very courteous and helpful. I would definitely recommend and return.
E. W.
Awesome art gallery! The cherry on top was the roman amphitheatre beneath; it looks like something out of the hunger games. Amazing art collection with artworks from all over the world and with many focusing on London. There's also a parchment with Shakespeare's signature on it which was interesting to see. Would highly recommend going!
D. C.
Go. Go for the underrated (Albeit small art gallery) but mostly go for the beautiful Guild Hall itself. There are few rooms I've been in to in London and immediacy said 'wow' out loud.
The crypt is also incredibly beautiful and the well lit and the roman Amphitheatre fascinating.
Definitely well worth a visit
A. B.
FREE Admission!
Amazing gallery. There is quite a big security as you enter but for a good reason. Good quality in paitings. They were brilliant, so light and deep pigmet in the paint. I like it quite a lot. I did not expected that the gallery will be so big. At the beginning I thought will be maximum a room or two butnit turned out that there were also a ground floor and a lower ground floor. Wow. It looked impressive with that Arena in there and all the impressibe story I did hear from the curator.
D. L.
Wonderful exhibition, Noel Coward. Fascinating permanent exhibits too. Highly recommend.
S. H.
What an amazing place!
Magna Carta and remains of a Roman amphitheatre!
J. P.
Beautiful place in a beautiful part of the city. Rally quick to go through it so its definitely worth a visit. Don't forget to go below the ground floor to get a look of the roman amphitheatre.
G. M.
Flower bar setup for corporate art and theatre event
J. F.
Went to see The Noel Coward exhibition. Lovely, helpful people working there. Nice, varied collection. Interesting Roman Amphitheater below. Handful of Preraphelites. An original Magna Carta. Well worth a trip. Oh and a stunning courtyard before the main building.
L. C.
Always love going to the Guildhall and went this time specifically to see the Noel Coward exhibition. Loved it.
C. S.
Great art gallery that goes on and on through rooms. Very interesting exhibition on mathematical patterns used to design tiles. The pièce de resistance were the Roman walls in the cellar. A highly recommended visit. No crowds no waiting and above all, cool.
N. C.
Beautiful northern lights
A. M.
Nice art gallery, super friendly staff.
Entrance is free and they also offer free guided tours on Saturdays.
They have in display a charter from Richard the lionheart, the Roman amphitheater is another must-see.
J. S.
A fantastic collection of 19th century and pre-raphaelite paintings, I was thrilled to see such quality, and all for a free entry fee, you will want to donate something after seeing what quality there is here. Also, I went to see the special exhibition of King Henry V's Crystal sceptre, which was a gift to the city of London in the early 15th Century.
N. R.
Have wanted to go for years and now I have. It was well worth a visit. The art gallery is well laid out and covid precaution ready. Amazing amphitheatre with great visuals and some stunning art.
J. D.
First time visiting this treasure. I went along for the Noël Coward exhib which was practically perfect. Beautifully presented and curated with some amazing costumes, set designs, personal artefacts... the background music was just at the right level, not intrusive and I learned a few things about the Master that I didn't know before. It's on until Christmas and well worth setting aside 2 or 3 hours for.
M. P.
A great free admission public gallery, which is usually quiet and currently has a Noel Coward exhibition that is running until December 2021. Due to Covid, need to book tickets. Worth visiting if coming to the City.
P. W.
Staff efficient and friendly, felt really welcome.
K. B.
Thank you Alison, the tour was great. All staff lovely? Loved the art and Noël Coward exhibition. X
J. J. M.
Lovely way to spend a few hours. Beautiful building and stunning art work.
J. T.
Such a hidden gem. And the staff were superb. If you can get to see the Noel Coward exhibition, you won't regret it - it's such fun
E. M.
Excellent space. Helpful staff and great exhibitions. A snapshot of the city of London through time.
M. K.
Cute gallery with roman ruins they found while remodeling the place!! Staff was super friendly.
S. A.
Nice museum which had paintings of the Victorian era. If you’re interested in Victorian culture you should Visit. it’s a great visit even if you’re just nearby (which I did). They have lots of paintings, there’s different levels from underground to 2nd floor. The shop is also nice, bought key rings. Entrance is free, just a bag check. Usually isn’t packed and the outside is also beautiful. There’s benches and it’s close to many stations as it’s in central.
J. S.
Nice modern art gallery in the heart of the City of London. Easy to access.
A. M.
A fine collection of Victorian art with the time-bending Roman amphitheatre beneath. All for free admission.
C. A.
An overlooked gallery that really gives you a brilliant connection to London's history. First of all as the gallery of the London Guildhall it is connected to the history of this central historical institution of the City of London. Then its collection includes lots of great Victorian art. Finally, by nice coincidence they have the ruins of London's Roman amphitheater from 70AD in their basement.
J. W.
Definitely a neat gallery. While its collections may not be as massive or famous as other galleries around London, the Guildhall Art Gallery is certainly worth a stop. A highlight of the building is the Roman Auditorium that can be found in its basement. It was very quiet the Friday that I visited. This was a pleasant surprise.
R.
Free entrance but a Noel Coward exhibition required pre booking .
Very friendly reception staff. Great art gallery.
R. C.
If you love art and/or Noel Coward, visit this beautiful old building and gallery which is tucked away in the city of London. Free exhibition and just off Lothbury, well worth a trip. The Noel Coward exhibition was really interesting and lots of personal exhibits and memories. Rest of gallery is a real mix of classics and modern. Not for children unless they have a passion but definitely a grown up trip. You need to book at mo due to COVID restrictions but easy enough online or phone and I repeat it's FREE! Highly recommend for the interested.
E. M.
I visited Guildhall Art Gallery for the Noel Coward Exhibition and felt really welcome by their very kind staff, in particular a lovely lady who accompanied me to the gallery to show me around. It was very well organised and followed Covid regulations. Previous to your visit, you book your slot in advance on line, so only a very few people at the same time. I really enjoyed the exhibition with very unique, personal items of Mr Coward, including some of his paintings. I was also surprised to discover that, within the Gallery, ancient ruins of a Roman Circus were found, and they can also be visited. Very impressive, really! Who would have imagined it right in the middle of the City? Thank you very much to all of you for making my visit so enjoyable. I will certainly visit again.
m. l.
It really is a hidden gem, what surprised us was the bottom floor which contained part of the newly discovered roman amphitheatre. Also had some really beautiful paintings.
D. P.
The Guildhall is a hidden gem. Although not a huge collection, it is varied and interesting. If tickets are still available, it is worth visiting for the Noel Coward exhibition alone. What I like best about the Guildhall is that it feels like an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. You feel that you can take your time to look at everything, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. Definitely recommended!
M. A.
Well worth a visit. If you're visiting London I would recommend this gallery. It's not crowded, there is so much to see. Nice staff.
S. G.
A real hidden gem. Wonderful art gallery with a fascinating exhibition about Noel Coward at the moment. Fantastic Roman amphitheater discovered here - really special experience.
J. S.
Always a treat visiting this marvelous building full of beautiful art. We come to visit it because of "A Sonata of Beethoven" by Alfred Edward Emslie who lived in our house and painted that picture in our drawing room :) we have a print but it's truly magnificent being able to see it out on display (quite massive in person)
Underneath the gallery are the remnants of a roman Colosseum which are well preserved and interesting to see. The paintings are truly breathtaking and all host such charm about them. I could spend hours here (and have done many times). The atmosphere is so calming and always an appropriate temperature. Highly recommend this as a day out in itself. ADMISSIONS ARE FREE.
C. S.
An utterly wonderful venue. Expert tour curated by David Harry. What a 🌟
D. J. M. L.
Fantastic, Free gallery, gorgeous paintings and art collection plus the roman amphitheater in the basement! Try to catch one of the tours
P. E.
A fantastic hidden gem........ marvellous permanent exhibition and well-informed and friendly staff.
Well worth a visit
T. O.
Not only did we see the fabulous (and free) Noel Coward exhibition, but the bonus of the Roman amphitheatre discovered beneath the Guildhall. Amazing, and so pleasurable with so few visitors at present. Make the most of it while we can!
D. G.
Friendly welcome from all the staff at the entrance and then... Wow! the Noel Coward Exhibition.... Perfect. I stayed for ages and will be back. It's free but it's a high class exhibition, fascinating exhibits and photos of Coward and his fellow stars and the not so famous colleagues. And, of course, the dressing gowns. I left with a smile on my face as - so it seemed - did all the other visitors.
M. C.
Free gallery showcasing Victoria art. There is also a roman amputhearte, but this is closed at this moment in time.
J. D.
Not a great lover of art galleries, I randomly booked tickets not expecting to enjoy it all that much, but my husband's interested in the Romans so I thought OK it will be a treat for him even though it will be boring for me.
I was wrong! The enthusiastic greeting from the lady on the desk, Karina, started the ball rolling. Her passion and friendliness overturned my slightly truculent mood and set me up to have a good time. And I did have a good time. I loved it. I expected monarchs and saints and politicians. But there was a surprising number of what I'd call 'domestic' art. Even the pre-Raphaelite stuff was enlightening rather than (as I'd expected) sentimental. My husband called it 'refreshing' and I agree. The size was manageable (some art galleries are sooo BIG)And then we went to the basement. That was a 'wow' moment.
Thanks Karina and co. We had a great time.
B. T.
Fascinating exhibition about Noel Coward - his art, style, work. On until December - allow at least 1.5 hours. I ran out of time!
m. t.
Noel Coward exhibition, as expected a stylish experience, he seemed to know everyone worth knowing in 20th century theatre plus working a a spy. A wonderful view of an exceptional life.
I. F.
I like it very much : it's s very interesting place and the building is over a Roman amphitheatre . Wonderful
M. C.
Very small gallery, a few interesting pieces but hey it’s free so can’t complain!
J. W.
They are currently showing a WWI remembrance with lots of interesting exhibits including these synthetic moth displays created by school children. The Roman amphitheatre is cool too.
V. L.
It's such a beautiful view Guildhall Art Gallery 🎨 😍 Amazing.....
G. H.
Well signed one way route around Noel Coward exhibition and Guildhall itself, one set of toilets were closed (not sure why), worth visiting as venue (art gallery) and exhibitions are free. NB need to book venue and special exhibitions separately.
D. L.
Nice place to visit
M. G.
Quirky London centric gallery with documents and amphitheatre
C. A.
Great gallery well worth a visit. Free and usually not to busy. Currently also have an excellent exhibition on Noel Coward. Book on line before going at present.
a. h.
Beautiful artwork, very well laid out. It was empty when we arrived at opening time. What a luxury to have an art gallery to ourselves
G. P.
Diverse exhibits, emblematic building, free entrance.
C. W.
I went to see the Noel Coward exhibition which was small and beautifully curated. 😍 did I mention it was free entry? Book on line.
T.
The art gallery is one of the best galleries i have been to so far. From the very beginning the staff has provided us with sufficient information and a warm welcome. The washrooms are high class and are definitely one of the best and cleanest from all the other public places has to offer. There is ample room to keep your jackets and start exploring the art gallery. Not only are thr paintains spectacuar but they convey to you a very important part of mediaeval and industrial England. Additionallly there are remains of the Romans and so forth. The gallery on the top floor was the best according to me ans its a must go.
D. A.
Great place with beautiful art pieces and very nice staff
V. E.
Enjoyed Noel Coward exhibition in lovely surroundings.
A.
Great gallery in the City. Definitely worth a visit.
S. H.
Wonderful Noel Coward exhibition until some time in December!!! Last entry 3pm and closes at 3pm. Free entry but you must book!
B. H.
Interesting gallery with a range of not-quite top class paintings beautifully displayed. Some of the works will appeal more to people with an interest in the history of London as they are evocative of life in the streets and pageantry of the past. Included in the visit is the Roman amphitheatre, again lavishly presented (I'm guessing the Corporation of the City of London has more money than most local councils). Well worth a visit.
K. P.
Came for Noel Coward expo (brilliant) and had a brief look at the gallery and the fascinating remains of the London Coliseum.
Charming and friendly staff.
Looking forward to visiting again
W. t. E.
Well it's a small art gallery so not really much to see. Since it's free for the main exhibition area it's never a bad idea to visit
j. f.
Went to a brilliant exhibition about Noel Coward.. which was fascinating and very well curated and displayed
The Galleries permanent collection is very interesting and displayed very well
T. T.
Collection of paintings and some pretty interesting stuff. How about magna carta? Go see.
S. S.
The gallery was amazing but cafe is over priced.
J. H.
Surprisingly good free museum with a chance to see the ruins of the London colosseum.
E. J.
Really lovely small gallery. The amphitheatre is very well presented using projections to increase experience
E. R.
A very interesting free tour! Lots of interesting history to discover.
K. H.
Perfect gallery located in the city. You can plan a guided tour or visit the paintings and statues on your own. Access is free and some paintings are huge and some are colorful.
Step in and spend here some time to enjoy these classics
m. S.
Lovely are gallery I'd highly recommend a visit
k. d.
Nice art gallery, most interesting feature to me is the ruins of a roman amphitheater they discovered underneath the gallery. Definitely worth a gander!
B. S.
10/10 Art Gallery
Some fantastic resplendent looking paintings, nice range on both floors. More classical style upstairs and more modern downstairs. Would highly recommend visiting this place along with the Museum of London nearby!
Fairly small place, downstairs is cool... Including the Amphitheatre, which wouod be best to go through with a tour guide or an audio guide :)
A. P.
Lovely interior, some really good exhibitions and the Roman ruins in the basement - well worth a visit
R. W.
The City's (capital 'C'!) own art gallery next to it's historic Guildhall. Well presented collection of paintings mostly with some sort of City connection. Regular series of special exhibitions- currently on Victorian perceptions and depictions of children. If you're visiting the Gallery don't miss the Roman amphitheatre beneath! Entry is free apart from special exhibitions
E. A.
Great place for history and culture of arts. All ages and it's free!!
S. C.
Lovely art gallery. Free to public.
J. K.
Free to visit, small collection which includes some really superb paintings, and the Roman amphitheatre remains and old maps of London are very interesting. Well worth a visit, whether you live in London or are just visiting.
C. R.
A little known free gallery in the heart of the city, well worth visiting. Enough to fill a couple of hours plus longer if you visit the current London Architecture in Art exhibition (£10 entry). A number of other nearby attractive are also free (such as the Guildhall Great Hall, if it's not shut for an event).
The amphitheatre is a nice bonus but not worth a trip in its own right, while well presented, there's very little to hold your interest down there.
J. R.
I came here purely because it was free but stumbled upon the free tour (brilliantly lead by Robert) and discovered a Roman amphitheatre in the basement!!
This place has lockers for customers in the basement area which is £1 but you get that back when you collect your bag and coats etc.
This place also has air conditioning
A brilliant hidden gem of the museum side of London!
H. S.
Absolutely loved it. Had a free tour which are run at particular times through the day. The guide was really knowledgeable and provided some useful insights into some of the paintings. Visited the amphitheatre underground. Didn't have time to see everything, but will be back!
M. B.
Nice place, I’ve been there with a group of kids who had a great experience on the amphitheatre with a friendly guide who made the day for the kids very interesting and enjoyable 😉
J. C.
It's a beautiful place whether you come for an exhibition or other function. Helpful and friendly staff. Smart loos. No cafe and very small shop, but their exhibitions are always interesting. You can see the Roman remains too, and their permanent art displays have something for everyone. At present they have on display the original Magna Carta, the later edition. Very impressive. Be prepared for a bag search on entry, but with politeness and a smile.
C.
Visiting London doesn't have to cost a fortune. Here is a perfect example of something interesting and completely free! Free entry. Free spacious and clean toilets. Free guided tour to tell you all about the history of the City of London through paintings mainly but there is also the remains of a roman amphitheatre in the basement.
Highly recommended.
D. B.
This is a largely unknown gem of a gallery. The art collection is wide ranging and nicely displayed. Some very well known pictures. Lots of representation of the City of London of course. It supports Smartify. First class loo and cloak rooms. An ruins of the Roman amphitheatre in the basement. Hosts interesting exhibitions as well. Main gallery is free - exhibitions sometimes charge. Some days tours my qualified City of London tour guides are available and recommended.
J. J.
I very much enjoyed the exhibition of paintings of London architecture. The gallery is superb. My one disappointment is that whilst one is understandably not allowed to take photos of the art, there was not any guide book, catalogue or brochure available. The charming lady on the desk said they don't do brochures because they don't sell! They wont sell if there aren't any! Surely with modern copier printing they could make a small run of colour leaflets at the very least. The exhibition was superb but lack of booklet marred my experience as I have no images to look back on or share with my artist friends.
V. V.
Nice place to visit if you have some time off. The guided tours and the guide are very good. The Paintings are nice, the guide explains things very thoroughly, the Roman Amphitheatre in the basement is definitely worth a visit.
P. B.
Free art gallery in the heart of the City. Fragment of the Roman amphitheatre in the basement which is fascinating. Art work is mainly London based and Victorian. The building is an excellent modern space where the pictures are well displayed.
A. R.
One of the hidden gems of the City of London.
It is a fabulous art gallery showcasing some great Victorian masterpieces. There are some amazing paintings about london as well.
One of the most interesting this about the gallery is that it contains the Roman amphitheatre (an ancient monument) in its basement. A must see
B. A.
A gem in the city of London! I caught the start of a guided tour. Worth it. A good lunchtime detour. Tours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays 1.15, 2.15 and 3.15. The artwork on display has rich history which is quite mind blowing. Will try to upload photos later
R. G.
Interesting paintings, lovely building and the current free Noel Coward exhibition was superb.
C. A.
Great place to visit and it is free!
Loved the Noel Coward exhibition.
M. T. P.
Rush now for the 'Noel Coward : Art and Style' exhibition - it's fantastic.
M. M.
really nice place, small but nice paintings, nice amphitheatre
P. m.
great art meets great history. be sure to take a free guided tour to help put this all in perspective. yet another free gallery/museum. be sure to see the remains of the roman amphitheatre in the basement.
T. H.
Small, but incredible place, some great artwork and seasonal exhibitions changing at regular intervals. This placereally is a hidden gem in the city that unfortunately not enough people know about, though on the plus side that also means it's never overcrowded. See the art and also the Roman amphitheatre. Re-live real history beneath the streets of London. Has a nice little museum shop too where goods are reasonably priced compared to similar places. I've taken many visitors here and they are always impressed. Whilst here, it's also well worth a visit to the main guildhall itself, which is just opposite. If you're lucky they sometimes have events going on and you can see all the pomp and pageantry of an old style London ceremony. Robes, wigs, the lot.
o. s.
An amazing art gallery with friendly staff and it is free to get in.
E. C.
Interesting collection of art, and neat to see the old roman excavation below. Very moving World War exhibit on display while I was there.
Free admission, air conditioned and clean bathrooms also a plus.
G. G.
One of London's hidden gems. The collection is mainly made up of Victorian art, among the paintings is the stunning portrait of Alexa Wilding by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
K. A.
Small Gallery with some exquisite paintings.. In the basement is a Roman amphitheatre which is great to find after soaking up the fantastic artworks. Grab a free audio guide from the reception it's great to enhance the history portrayed in the building.
T. D.
Very interesting, has some great paintings, and even offers a free tour. The best part however is most certainly the Roman Ampitheatre underneath the building, it is extremely interesting and well run.
T. D.
I went to see the London Architecture exhibition, which will cost you £10 and well worth it. Get a curator tour if you can though all the staff are helpful and expert. There's more to the place including a Roman basement so I shall have to return when I have more time.
V. D.
Had passed by here many times without going in and glad I did. Lots of great paintings and also other artefacts with some good displays on the roman Times. Gives you a good view on how London has changed over the years.
Z. Z.
Amazing art gallery. Worth visiting
A. T.
Excellent fine! Great paid for exhibition on built London but some beautiful other works, a Roman amphitheatre and super social history. Definitely worth a visit.
R. H.
Very interesting, very helpful staff. Don't miss paying a visit to the Roman amphitheatre
D. C.
Interesting gallery right in the centre of the city but sufficiently off the tourist trail that you can enjoy it without being crowded out by camera clickers and wailing brats. Free guided tours during the day (about quarter past the hour I think). You can't really miss the centrepiece of the main gallery, John Singleton Copley's huge painting The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar, as the building is almost contracted around it.
H. H.
Lovely paintings, especially the Pre-Raphaelites. Beautiful building, too. The welcoming lady at the reception desk is wonderful, and the toilets have to be seen to be believed. And all free!
T. C.
Great Noel Coward exhibition on atm. Seating not too comfortable around the gallery.
C. B.
Some interesting paintings/artwork and an informative mathematical exhibition. The Roman Amphitheatre on the lower level also adds to the interest. A good couple of hours to do it properly. Free to get in.
M. S.
It's got interesting exhibitions. It's small enough for the City worker to do an exhibition in a single lunch hour. But as the museum is free, if you need to return, you can!
R. T.
Nice selection of painting, but my reason for visiting was the Roman Amphitheatre in the basement. Not a great deal left but amazing what London is built on. Free to enter and well worth a visit.
S. M.
Great art gallery with London theme and foundations of amphitheatre. The free audio guide is really good. They have interesting temporary exhibitions too.
N. A. S.
This is one of my favourite places in the City - it is so full of history but in a very intimate way - for instance there is a very dramatic painting depicting the Lord Mayor Show and it’s full of real life characters of the City from that time - everything from beggars to aristocrats all jumbled together in a mesmerising composition. If you are in the neighbourhood, pop in - it’s free and you won’t regret it!
j. b.
This elegant building completed in 1999 is an exercise in understated top-drawer craftsmanship and a showcase for The Corporation of London's permanent art collection, exhibitions and Roman era ruins.
Here find exceptional quality and civility.
This admirable endeavour offering free admission is undoubtedly worth your time and effort.
A memorable outing.
G. S.
Really nice visit. Loved the Roman ruins and the collection of art they have on display.
J. C.
Excellent Noël Coward exhibition. Only drawback was that it was very warm and stuffy inside.
E. h. (.
Excellent gallery - a combination of oil paintings, exhibit about the World War I, ruins of roman amphitheathre. Great to have a look around, and even though gallery is quite small, it will keep you occupied for a couple of hours
M. G.
Great cultural experience and permanent art collection in a quiet part of our bustling City
M. L.
Enjoyed our visit! Best guide ever
A. S.
A wonderful collection of 19th (but not exclusively) century paintings in a beautiful building built on the remains of the Roman amphitheatre dated ca. 50AD (which you can see). And it's free!
P. B.
The Guildhall gallery has a good collection of paintings, mostly with a London theme, but the highlight is the Roman amphitheatre in the basement. This was discovered when the gallery was under construction and its remains are amazing to see. A real treat for a free museum.
R. B.
Great exhibition on Noel Coward currently on at this venue. Not to be missed!
S. M.
Small but very interesting gallery of mostly 19th century paintings. Vibrant, it covers a number of lesser-known artists, which makes for a picquing interlude for the day.
Also to not be missed is the ruin of the Roman amphitheatre in the basement.
M. F. d. A.
Leaving the circuit of “main” museums in London is often very rewarding — and Guildhall is so worth the detour or excursion, however one sees it!
Though I have to admit going to Guildhall just for the remains of the Roman amphitheater. Went through all the other rooms exhibiting mainly Victorian art without even looking at the walls, straight (though it is the least straight route possible) to the underground of the Gallery — to find quite underwhelmingly humble ruins, especially since some event was sadly scheduled for the day and the space was crammed with boxes and technological paraphernalia and not the least atmospheric, as it is supposed to normally feel.
Just then did I go back to the “rest” of the gallery... The dramatic spirituality of William Blake here, Rossetti’s angelic beauties there, and Burne-Jones, Millais... A wonderful collection of pre-Raphaelites, including some huge, epic paintings of prime quality, quite a few show stoppers really — and no noisy crowds to hinder one’s appreciation. Plus views of London across the times...
And though I don’t like taking guided tours, am glad staff kindly suggested I take one — for what an amazing guide we had, contagious in her wit and passion for art! Some 45 minutes worth a lifetime of information, that actually felt like only 15 — while I wish had actually lasted 90 minutes!
L. W.
Varied collection of paintings, some by famous people, mainly men. Free admission. Part of Roman amphitheatre visible in the basement, but not very exciting.
J. P.
The Exhibition, Noël Coward: Art & Style is magnificent. Until December 2021. See it.
J. A.
Very small gallery comprising two rooms in the basement on the right hand side of the Guildhall square. Small shop at the entrance. Pleasant staff. Reduced entry price if you work/live in the area or with an Art Fund card.
S. M.
I had a brilliant experience here. A nice range of art work including mathematical patterns. It was very quiet so it was possible to admire the work. Entrance was free and there is a guided tour.
E. C.
Was very surprised by this gallery - came up on a self guided walk and didn't expect to spend time in here but when you're outside the whole area is stunning and even better inside, great art, lovely staff and their own Roman ruins in the basement! Excellent!
A. A.
A hidden gem in the heart of London, I especially enjoyed walking through Londinium's Roman Amphitheatre in the basement. Superb collection of 19th century art, with Millais, Holman Hunt and two particularly lovely Tissot. And all free of charge. Highly recommended.
C. B.
Had a great time as always there
R. A.
Absolutely stunning! Such an amazing place and it's free admissions! The tour guide was very lovely too, very informative and kind! I wasn't expecting to learn so much ☺
J. E.
Very nice and quiet museum, not many people go here which I find strange. The amphi-theatre under the building is just amazing. Free tours three times a day, not bad at all.
S.
A small place - but with beautiful artwork, a fascinating ancient monument in the basement (London's Roman Amphitheatre) plus friendly staff, makes it a good attraction to visit to complement the others in the area.
K. 1.
The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the art collection of the City of London, England. It occupies a building that was completed in 1999 to replace an earlier building destroyed in The Blitz in 1941. It is a stone building in a semi-gothic style intended to be sympathetic to the historic Guildhall, which is adjacent and to which it is connected internally.
T. R.
Superb exhibition of Nelson Coward life. So good I will revisit.
Nöel Coward not Nelson!!!!!
M. h.
Free art gallery covering different periods. Located in the basement is the remains of London's Roman Amphitheatre. It's worth a visit.
R. W.
The free guided tours are amazing...
D. P.
A tucked away, quiet haven; a retreat from the surrounding City financial district. A relatively small collection of paintings, but some interesting London history, dating back to Roman times, and, of course, the excavated remains of the Londinium amphitheatre two stories beneath current ground level.
P. R.
Nice collection with a common theme of the city. I love the juxtaposition of different styles and eras. The amphitheatre is impressive and atmospheric.
N. F. A. C. P. a. D.
Beautiful free museum where you can see and study the paintings of great 19th/early 20th century masters such as Sir Leighton, John Collier, Walter Osborne or Henry Scott Tuke, amongst others. There are also some Roman ruins underneath. But what makes this gallery are really the 19th century paintings.
H. R.
Storage for a Marble of Margaret Thatcher. Interesting to discover. Can't share my opinion of that here due to terms and conditions. Anyway aside from that the building is beautiful (being by Richard Gilbert Scott) and the collection is well worth seeing.
N. T.
What a place, right in the City. The art and the amphitheatre are wonderful. It is small and definitely 45 minutes or one hour very well spent.
M. C.
Went for the Noel Coward exhibition! Brilliant!!
R. S.
Nice art gallery with fascinating preserved remains of London's Roman Amphitheatre. Free entry. Some maps wrongly show this at Mount Pleasant.
W. S. V.
Surprisingly little known but great and varied art gallery - perfect for a City lunch break but also well worth a visit for tourists in the area, especially the underground remains of the Roman amphitheatre.
R. P.
A real hidden gem. Good artworks, friendly staff and the remains of a Roman amphitheatre in the lower levels. All this and its free too!
L. O.
Art work is mainly London based and Victorian. The building is an excellent modern space where the pictures are well displayed.
A. S.
Covid secure. Lovely helpful staff. Always enjoy our visit.
N. C.
The food was gorgeous and filling. A lovely restaurant with most original features of the original building. A delight to eat in and take in the surroundings. Lovely cocktails too!
N. G.
Attended a conference at Guildhall then went to the art gallery and the Roman Amphitheatre, wonderful array of paintings and great sense of history, will be bringing my nieces and nephews who are studying Roman history.
S. M.
Not the most exciting collection of paintings. Primarily Victorian portraits - some good examples of Millais and Tissot. The amphitheatre remains below are worth a look.
M. M.
Smallish but nice collection and free to get in.
J. K.

G. M.
The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the art collection of the City of London, England. It is a stone building in a semi-gothic style intended to be sympathetic to the historic Guildhall, which is adjacent and to which it is connected internally.
