Reviews of National Maritime Museum
L. D. (.
One of the top destination in Greenwich, The National Maritime Museum is the largest museum of its kind in the world to learn about maritime history. It is very friendly for kids, many engagement activities here for family and children. Don't forget to take a photo of the Ship in a Bottle in front of the museum, discover tales of polar exploration, and learn more about the indigenous communities that live in the Arctic and Antarctic, find your favourite figurehead which are carved wooden sculptures that traditionally sat on the prows of sailing ships, learn about the British hero Nelson and his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar 1805.
H. S.
A little off shoot from the main maritime museum that is much more adult based. Again free entry but you are encouraged to make a donation after walking freely around the floors. Each exhibit has information and there's info dotted around about the history of the house. I think you need to allow 30-60 for a visit
S. N.
was very amazing experience. I enjoyed a lot.
This is a historical place. You go here and get rich from the wealth of information. I like it very much.

We visited on 16/01/22. It is free entry and we were told they had 2 new exhibitions to view. There is really quite alot to see here over different levels/floors. They also had young astronomer of the year exhibition, this was at a extra cost of £10 p/adult. There is 2 cafés with a choice of hot/cold drinks/food. Lots of interesting artifacts & information. I personally loved all the figureheads and the baltic glass ( stained glass ) exhibit along with the ship simulator ( a big kid at heart!)

What a wonderful museum celebrating all things naval. Part of the Royal Greenwich Museums, the maritime museum is free. Members go free to exhibitions.
There is a wealth of history including Nelson's uniform! There are galleries looking at history, but also life at sea in present times. I loved the free exhibition on living in Antarctica, and also the North pole.
The exhibits on migration and slavery are both informative, poignant and thought provoking.
The museum has a modern feel, lots of interactive things.
Highly recommend a visit

Visited today and had a heart felt feeling for veterans who have served the navy and appreciations to our oceanic nature , constant improvements of trades, technology and cultures in the exchange via oceans in continents. Kids friendly and a lot things to experience and learn. Hope to see more in Traders history in the future. Royal observatory, Queen’s house just near your foot steps around the estate and Cutty Sark couldn’t be missed.

Great place to visit for a day with family and especially for kids. For history and crown lovers, this is going to be an amazing experience. Really impressed at the replicas and informations displayed about each one. Free entry and access to multiple cafe in each floor. The view of london skyscrapers from the top of hill is so good

Wonderful day out. Have wanted to visit for a long time and decided to go yesterday. What a brilliant place. So much to see, wonderful exhibits and artwork. Being from Portsmouth we have an interest in things maritime especially Tudor period and Admiral Nelson and were not disappointed in what we saw. They have the uniform Nelson was wearing when fatally wounded at Trafalgar which totally stunned me as well as the cannon ball that struck HMS Victory among many other wonderful exhibits. There is something for everyone here, too much to list but have posted some pictures of some of the exhibits. We booked tickets online in advance in case it was busy and were offered car parking from 10.00-5.00 for just £10 which I would recommend. It meant we could visit the museum and then take a Thames River cruise safe in the knowledge the car was secure. Please try and visit this museum if you get the chance it is thoroughly recommended.

Absolutely a must visit so much to see and learn how the British empire came to be,Past wars ,slave trade,Famous people Nelson,Bonaparte ect ect.
S. R.
So much to see here it's well worth your time to visit. Free to enter the general museum, you only pay for specific, temporary exhibitions. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff only too happy to help or answer any questions, particularly the lady in the Pacific section.
A most enjoyable experience!
D. G.
Amazing museum, for free, surrounded by charming gardens and managed by smart (an also charming) staff. We arrived 30 minutes before closing time and we were still allowed in. They have different sections for the different seas and oceans plus specific thematic expositions. These days we could enjoy it without crowds. Congratulations to all British sea people.
A. Q.
Excellent Customer Service at the reception, lady welcome smile, much appreciated and loads of Regards.
K. B.
Nice museum about maritime history. Some of it was closed off, but the open areas were interesting.
It had an exhibition with paintings of monarchs from the National Portrait Gallery, which is being refurbished. There was an entry fee for the exhibition, but it was free for members.
It is best if you prebook due to covid restrictions on numbers.
J. G.
A good and informative day out. Very easy to navigate your way around and there are loads of things on display. It's also really close to the Cutty Sark and the University of Greenwich grounds. Close transport links and there's a café on-site. Will definitely be visiting again!
C. T.
When for the Diwali celebrations. Really food to see different ethnic background together learning and celebrating. My son really enjoyed and the grounds were beautiful too.
L. A.
Lovely views and plenty to see! Get the cruise ship up the Thames and get off at Greenwich.
L. R.
This was a stop gap as we were heading to a Naming Ceremony in Greenwich
I was surprised it was free
It was busy and there was not a one way system in place so you could walk anywhere
Staff wearing masks and advised public to wear masks but not compulsory
As we were limited for time we will be returning to look around properly but what we did see was very nice
Worth a visit especially if visiting Greenwich Park this is within the grounds so if the weather is nice could have a picnic
h. k.
Visited the NMM to find it fascinating. Lots of artifacts and eras covered throughout the expansive building. Tragically did not allow enough time to see everything. Will definitely return to see more.
L. R.
Very good. Lots to see and great facts. A few minutes walk from Cutty sark & Cutty Sark station along Romney Road. Pre-booked and just scanned in on arrival. Not too crowded and plenty of sanitisers. Can take own picnic, card payment only at cafe.
K. R.
The National Maritime Museum (NMM) is a maritime museum in Greenwich, London. It is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, a network of museums in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Like other publicly funded national museums in the United Kingdom, it has no general admission charge; there are admission charges for most side-gallery temporary exhibitions, usually supplemented by many loaned works from other museums.
T. L.
Really good museum with lots of historical artefacts. Needs time to go through all the collections. Nice coffee shop overlooking the giant world map in the huge atrium.
M.
I specifically visited to see the Astronomy Exhibition and the Lunar New Year performance on a Saturday.
The exhibition was great! But the performance could've been orchestrated much better. So for anyone visiting on the weekend to see a performance, I'd recommend that you bring a folding chair/ cushion, a fan to keep you cool and possibly binoculars. Also to read the brochure.
And if the Maritime Museum see this, please could you consider the below in order to improve the experience:
Having a raised stage so that everyone can see, manage people numbers so that it doesn't become chaotic, if there are many people that windows be opened and mention etiquette at the beginning.
F. Y.
Filled with artifacts from all realms of the world. Really recommend and was personally more interesting than the British museum.
s. h.
Magnificent and Fascinating....surrounded by history with ancient and modern architecture blending together seamlessly.
P. T.
Queens house is well worth a visit. Some fabulous art work on view.
L. C.
Hadn't been here for a while but love this place. Visited it before and it is so interesting and great for kids. This time I went specifically to see the exhibition Tudors to Windsors and loved it!
S. E.
Really well kept and a museum with a wealth of information on Briton's maritime history. Rather nice layout of sections and nice cafes to break up the visit.
But, having been here with a young child, it really isn't catered well for children under 8 or so. There are a number of children focused parts like the Ahoy and the children's museums but the later is a really not week thought out and the Ahoy bit is average at best.
The main Museum could do with trying to cater for younger children more and keep them interested and wanting to come back. The middle floor with a large map is just wasted and left as an area for some to run around.
K. U.
What an amazing view on a clear sunny day - well worth the steps. The Observatory itself is filled with amazing history and will be appreciated by those of us who realise how little we have left of time. Might not be the most exhilarating experience for younger kids mind you especially primary age.
U. M.
Didnt have enough time to see everything I would have liked to as my visit took me elsewhere in Greenwich. The museum was however a must see and a place I will go back to in the future. The exhibits in the various galleries were laid out in a very accessible manner and appeared to be of a very high standard.
E. W.
Highly recommend a visit. It's great for kids and adults - we went as a mixed group and everyone enjoyed it. Highlights were the giant floor map on the first floor, and the Polar exhibition. Would love to go back and explore more.
P. R.
It might look small, but it is a very impressive and interactive museum. You can have a great time seeing different aspects of navigation in the UK.
T. H.
Amazing, so much to explore. Beautiful setting and fantastic collections. Superb for children.
H. N. H.
Had a great night at The Globe watching As You Like It performance with coronavirus physical distancing by the actors. No intermission just two hours of blissful live theatre. It was great to be there.
H. D. S.
Really nice museum, packed with information and beautiful things, I would love to go back with more time I left wanting to know more!
H. P.
As a wheelchair user, the museum is really accessible and easy to get around. Had a great day exploring all the different areas, there is so much to see, especially enjoyed the Polar world section, and the Nelson exhibits. Would highly recommend a visit.
J. M.
This is a great museum, very well designed within a beautiful building and full of very interesting and cleverly displayed items. Educational and very enjoyable. Bravo.
J. S.
A lovely museum! Lots of things to see and to explore! Plus it's free! Toilets are clean too! And nice luxurious soap too! LOL :)
The museum is very organised in terms of including a one way system for visitors to walk around.
Make sure to get there nice and early as it will take a while to walk around to see everything in much detail!
Staff are friendly! So much so that one of the team members spoke to my mother on the history of events! :)
It's amazing how places like these are free so FEEL FREE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE AND EXPLORE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM. :)
L. A.
Lovely museum, but it’s a shame quite a few things have been taken away or roped off due to Covid. That’s my only complaint really. Great to spend an hour or two with the kids. The cafe is also very good.
P. K.
I visited @ 2018 sep month range. It was very nice historical place.
T. S.
Brilliant exhibition for toddlers called 'Ahoy! ' with lots of open-ended play opportunities. We didn't know about this at all and were so impressed with it. Free in term time but timed tickets which we booked on arrival. Nice cafe too. Simulator also fun - both toddler and dad had fun on it!
C. A.
An excellent place to bring little ones and for them to learn about the sea. Lots of displays and some are interactive too. Nice cafe next to the big map.
C. K.
For a free attraction this is really expansive and detailed. There is lots to see and do and the cafe is really nice. Good for all ages. The big world map is definitely worth having a look at.
S. B.
Kids & I had a great time, they love learning about history and interacting in the children’s Gallery was fun ☺️
K. D.
A lovely day out for all ages. So much to see and plenty for the younger ones too, but be prepared to be exhausted at the end of your visit. Most areas are free apart from the parking
K. C.
Easy to get to with lots to see and explore. Two play rooms for children. The one upstairs is free and its best to book a slot online for the downstairs play area which costs £3 per child. It used to be free but it was stil worth it as the children really enjoyed themselves.
A. G.
Great place to explore the maritime adventures of the great explorers such as Captain Cook
F. D.
Large collection very rich exhibition planty of miniature ships other interesting artifacts. Good to come with family and kids as the children can really enjoy this. Also have a corner for them to play. Best place in Greenwich.
N. ..
Great Museum and a few things available for children also. However, on arrival I was told the Ahoy centre (play area tailored to children) had been fully booked out for that day but they were unsure if every person who booked turned up which meant sadly we missed out. Next time I will ensure to pre book a slot.
A. L.
Great museum with a lot of knowledge.
T. B.
An excellent museum, covering the history of this maritime nation. Increasingly and rightly so, highlighting the darker aspects of our naval exploits, such as the slave trade, opium wars and East India Trading company to name a few.
I haven't got the picture anymore, but to see Admiral Nelson's uniform complete with bullet hole, was fascinating. Especially after seeing the actual bullet at Windsor Castle, the day before.
Seeing the naval figureheads was of interest, how unique they are and creative. Along with other naval items.
I have a good knowledge of history and I enjoyed the concise exhibits, charting our naval history from the Tudors to the 19th century. I picked up a few new titbits. The displays are good for all knowledge ranges, as well as children
S. R.
Being of seafaring heritage and also a Marine Engineer with 14 years seagoing experience. I would say I have seen better. Particularly Hamburg maritime museum. But there was still some good things to see here and of course it was free so sharnt complaint. Thanks
T. N.
Great place for kids stunning displays and it is free.
M. U.
A great place to visit, plenty to see and to do in the area.
A. A. H.
Just superb. Wonderful place to visit and travel on water bus. Great City views
A. C.
Another great free museum in London, perfect for sea and maritime lovers. Especially loved the 'Great Map' which is a giant map floor where children can run around, and it's also right next to the cafe.
f. s.
excellent experience, well worth a visit if you are interested in the maritime history of England, free entry
T. B.
Lovely place to visit for a few hours. So.e amazing sites and so.e great insite into maritime history.
K. U.
What an amazing view on a clear sunny day - well worth the steps. The Observatory itself is filled with amazing history and will be appreciated by those of us who realise how little we have left of time. Might not be the most exhilarating experience for younger kids mind you especially primary age.
d. 2.
Some interesting exhibits, but limited in number. Combine with visit to Cutty Sark and its a morning well spent.
B. Y.
This is such an informative place having alot of historical items.i just loved it to be there.
B. A.
I really enjoyed this museum. It gives a very in depth look at many of the seafaring adventurers throughout British history and helps you take a deep dive into many moments. It also has some interactive things for children, for families that want to enjoy the museum. Definitely set aside a full day to really be able to enjoy this experience.
P. S.
Good place for children. Free entrance
K. R.
So many beautiful things. So many stuff stolen from Egypt and the Middle East.
Very busy in some areas and mask discipline could be much better.
Cafetaria nice and reasonably priced.
For a museum.
T. B.
Lovely place to visit for a few hours. So.e amazing sites and so.e great insite into maritime history.

First time visiting the National Maritime Museum and what an amazing experience, walking through the grounds on a beautiful sunny day was exceptionally nice with fantastic views of the colonnades, the Queens House and the Royal Greenwich Observatory on the hillside.Once inside the museum I found it very easy to navigate the various exhibits, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of of information and interaction with so many of the exhibits.Everywhere was exceptionally clean and spacious and not overcrowded, after a few hours of browsing my wife and I headed to the cafe and had some delicious soup followed by coffee and cake which was served by very nice and helpful staff, again the area was very clean and tidy and not overpriced. I will definitely visit again and recommend it to friends and family.A wonderful day, thank you.
J. T.
Fun place to bring the kids. Lots of space for everyone to roam around. Don't forget to pre book/pay to enter into the children's play area. Lots of fun themed activities to engage the children
v. k. s.
An unique place to know ancient maritime history
C. F.
Always the best place to learn. Home of the Meridian line and time from which the whole world sets it's clocks.
T. N.
Great place for kids stunning displays and it is free.
A. C.
A place that has boats and ships load of information. We went to the museum after spending a good deal of time at the observatory. We were already tired with all the walking. Make sure you have lots of time and energy in hand, and of course, interest in wartime maritime
A. S.
Top museum, free admission is always impressive and the Maritime museum delivers an abundance of delights. First of all the children's play areas are great, educational soft play that will keep kiddos of all ages occupied. For 'Ahoy' you need to book a time slot in advance but this is well worth doing. The museum blends the traditional with the innovative, with augmented reality attractions such as the giant map mixed in with more conventional exhibits. Cafes are good and the staff are very helpful and charming. Top stuff all round.
G. N. M.
A wonderful free museum with some nice interactive exhibits and a variety of maritime history through the ages. There's often a variety of exhibitions to keep things interesting and fresh
R. B.
Great place. Up there with the science museum etc. But not crowded. Greenwich is a stop, painted hall, Queens Hall etc great day and as cheap as you want to make it
M. W.
Well organised for social distancing and steering visitors through the exhibition. Staff were super friendly. I had forgotten how interesting this museum actually is !
P. T.
Well presented exhibits, spacious display areas. Loads of Maritime history.
Has a nice cafe with kids play area
B. Y.
This is such an informative place having alot of historical items.i just loved it to be there.
T. T.
So much to see! Be great for kids with a lot interactive things to do and visually it brought to life. make it more ìnteresting for them keep them engaged. Can't do it in one day to fully enjoy it. we had about 3 hours there but would definitely visit again.
C. C.
So we live near this museum and have counted our lucky stars. If you've not been and have kids (or don't!!) I cannot more highly recommend this museum. Really interactive throughout. The staff are all so knowledgeable, love their jobs, will stop and talk to you without looking like they HAVE to, the new galleries are FANTASTIC and if you're a Londoner and don't know the history around the Thames or our seafaring days then get down here quick! So so so good. Shops are great too for gifts. And the new cafe is to die for too. Our favourite bits are the great map, the pirate bit, the article bit and the Pacific bit...where with a little imagination you can pretend to ride a massive wave :) Ahoy is great. But sometimes it's THE most popular spot on a rainy weekend afternoon with a strict one in/one out policy.
N. G.
A very interactieve, engaging and interesting exhibition. Good for old and young and easily accessible with a pram or wheelchair. Pay close attention to any exhibitions you might want to see in addition to the museum, those cost extra but might be really worth it.
You might enjoy the two cafes on separate floors, one serves an indulgent hot chocolate for cold days! Enjoy!
C. G.
We all love this amazing beautiful place, it’s lots of great things going on every day have something differently, directors filmmakers making films, music concerts, arts gallery exhibitions, famous closes designers, painting artist, actors, actress of theatre, concerts singers and lots of more. Including the royal family members coming to visiting ourselves Greenwich park and museum, very famous Weeding party going on at Queen House.
All staffs are friendly and very helpful and treats everyone else around the world in special, ourselves community it’s very great and friendly.
E. S.
Really enjoyed visiting the National Maritime Museum with my family this Christmas. The staff were super friendly and helped organise the tickets. The children enjoyed the boat simulator on the 2nd floor.
L. J.
National Maritime Museum located in Park Row, Greenwich, it’s an excellent museum of British naval history with entrance free. It’s great museum with impressive exhibitions, with some interactive activities for kids as well and wheelchair access is very good. Large open spaces, restaurant and toilets available and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful, we were there for +3hours. Highly recommend because it’s a great place for tourists and not only to visit.
P. W.
Lots of interesting things to see. Quality exhibit.
S. G. A.
This place is complete. Great exhibition on exactly the national maritime history of the British empire and England, showing seafaring story from Tudor to now, including transatlantic slave trade.
The children area in the 2nd floor is really fun for my 3 year old, with an interactive "crane" to simulate moving cargos from the harbor to the ship, the insides of the ship, sailing simulator, etc. The Great Map in the 2nd floor also has a nice atmosphere where they can run around near the cafe while their parents take a rest.
The Great Map Cafe has a nice latte with reasonable price and a very friendly and welcoming lady in the cashier that makes it worth. The seats are plenty and we have no difficulty getting it at the time.
There is even a multi-faith contemplation room in the 2nd floor for they who need to do their daily prayer!
A. R.
Great place for some naval history lovely cafe good value great quality food. The royal history exhibition was worth a visit great place for s day out in Greenwich
M. E.
Really informative exhibits and best of all free of charge, but make sure you pre book
R. M.
This is fantastic place to visit. Great children play area too. Pre-booking is essential despite the admittance is free.
R. T.
The National Maritime Museum houses the world's largest maritime library and archive collection. Beautiful historic building set in the grounds of Greenwich Park. It’s free to enter, closed for Covid but set to open for the summer visitors
G. B.
Much to see. Well presented. Free. Currently need to book online before entry. Coffee shop on site. Easy access and lifts.
K. R.
Fantastic museum with a huge range of collections and exhibits. We have been several times recently and still haven’t been able to see everything. Perfect rainy day place for children and adults alike! The cafes here do delicious coffee and nice food too. It’s a really relaxed environment for young families and babies.
M. U.
A great place to visit, plenty to see and to do in the area.
P. K.
The National Maritime Museum is well work a visit for anyone into naval history.
A. A. H.
Just superb. Wonderful place to visit and travel on water bus. Great City views
C. R. C.
Amazing and interesting historic paintings, relics and informations also 3D experience
R. T.
Very beautiful and interesting, but it lacks the flow or the sense of direction. There are multiple exhibitions/galleries revolving around different themes (Thames and London, Trade, specific battles etc.), but there is no clear sense of direction. Maybe some people like to walk freely through the galleries, but I would like some sort of guidance. Most of the Museum is free, but there are paid galleries as well. The content is very interesting and in good condition. There is some children/educational area as well. For a quick visit I think you can get through the Museum in 1-2 hours, but for proper exploration I recommend 4-5 hours. Overall I highly recommend it
B. (.
Great free events. Ideal for families, especially younger children. I wish there was a shop/stall selling memorabilia if the special event.
K. P.
Visited the Queens House - Wonderful and free!. The newly restored portrait of Queen Elizabeth 1 was worth it! Watch the video on the way in, first.
S. B.
A great place to visit. So interesting and informative. The upstairs café wasn't open but luckily the one near the exit was.
A. M.
Had a lovely day out, very good value for money. Loved the yskanna dance show and monsters in the deep. The arts and crafting is also just brilliant and our kids spent a good hour doing just that. Only negative feedback are that food options in the cafe is very limited although the staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend for a trip out with family and kids.
L.
ENTRANCE IS FREE!!! One of the best museums I've ever seen. The building by its own is a masterpiece but inside is more interesting. If you like maritime things you're going to love it. You can find and see(explore) everything that happened from the very beginning of maritime from sailing till the now years of engines. And a fun fact... in the college next to the museum is a scene on THOR: The Dark World
F. L.
Historical museum filled with many treasures of British naval history. Artifacts, paintings and other pieces of antiquity fill this institution which gives great chronological accounts. A must visit attraction.
M. M.
Small museum, family oriented so you see kore kids, events tend to be in small spaces so if you are not there well in advance you never get in. Still worth to explore before enjoying a walk at Greenwich Park. Cafe has a very slow service so be prepared to wait.
A. S.
Amazing place to soak up some maritime history, with your family or even by yourself. The upper mezzanine has a great space for toddlers and kids to play on the giant atlas, and shuffle about on little boats.
C. T.
You want to know why Britain is a seafaring nation then come here and find out.
The exhibition halls have lots of exhibits from all sorts of ships and is a real education a must go to museum and its free entry.
R. J.
Wonderful place to visit with kids.
K. D. L.
Paid a visit to the National Maritime Museum today. My objective was to study the expeditions of Captain James Cook and lives of Native Mauri's and Aborigine's in New Zealand and Australia. 5 hours of delightful exposure to historical information. The museum was booked out when we got there. They were only accepting visitors with pre-booked entry. The social distancing practices put in place were stringent but without restriction. I felt very safe. There are multiple hand sanitiser stations on each floor and a one way system helps you to navigate your way through the Museum safely.
We were fortunate once again to encounter a member of staff knowledgeable in all areas that was happy to assist us to gain a deeper understanding of featured events in history. The staff were calm, helpful, friendly and professional. We will be visiting again next week 😊
J. A.
Great museum in Greenwich next to the park for all things history,naval/shipping, engineering. Please bear in mind that they don't whitewash things that in 2022. people may find offensive like slavery et al. When I visited, I noticed they portray East India and slavery in a sensitive careful way. Apart from the dark side of humanity, everything else is first class cultural/scientific capital.
a. d.
My first visit, only saw a fraction, looking forward to another visit.
C. R.
The grounds surrounding this museum are picturesque. I would best describe them as peaceful and green yet ordered and well maintained. The museum itself is wonderful , bright, airy and has on offer a wide range of nautical artefacts and histories ready to be explored. It's a beautiful building with lots on offer. I particularly enjoy the special events held here.
Y.
One of the best museums in London - under rated. The exhibits are beautiful - the bathrooms are clean. Wheelchair access is very good.
Safe large open spaces for young children and families.
N. K.
Great for viewing and learning about history also a fun way to show kids about history. Everything was so clean and tidy followed guidelines. Lots of different areas you can see and learn about not just one type. Also loads of things kids can interact with and learn including morse code a ships wheel and a giant world map.
D. K.
A brilliant museum well presented exhibitions
A. H.
INCREDIBLE...
All our crew were treated to a spectacular evening with an amazing curator all to ourselves. We were made to feel like celebrities for the evening and soaked up the wonderful atmosphere. Thank you all from the crew of the RRS SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH X
C. H.
Overall a bit disappointing as an adult to visit. Given the extensive maritime history of the British Empire the exhibits were not as interesting to explore as I would have thought they could be. The building was nice and the large map a nice addition.
B.
Lovely place to add to your Greenwich day out! Free admission and really friendly for all. Easy to navigate (hahah) and plenty of space.
C. P.
After calling London home for 8 years during the 80's never visited this place. I was invited to a celebration ball at this venue early this month and made the long journey from Sydney. I was indeed pleasantly surprised. What a great place it was not only for a celebration such as the one I attended. The maritime history depicted in the displays is well worth a visit, especially if you are interested in history of seafaring.
A. M.
Wonderfully restored building housing a great museum of Britains nautical history. Modern facilities Star of the show for me is Nelson's uniform he wore when shot on HMS Victory during Battle of Trafalgar. Complete with bullet hole in shoulder of jacket! Really spooky and brings history to life .
B. F.
Went for the Astro photo exhibition, which was great, but quite a small area for the exhibition. Quite a few of the entries which you can see in the book and not on display. It's a shame, maybe a bigger space and entries for the exhibition?
a. b.
Absolutely brilliant, so much to see there and so interesting, then visit next door the Queens House well worth the visit , the staff we spoke to where not only nice but very knowledgeable.
S.
We have been visited two exhibitions about the Moon and Astronomy photography of the year 2020. It was really worth the price. Impressive exhibitions and great location to visit. You can visit one and then walk to the hill in the Greenwich park. The buffet might be better, but it's okay.
T. S.
What a fantastic place. I hadn't realised quite how much was there of historical significance. Why haven't I visited there before?
L. P. E.
Big museum with great collection of the British maritime history. It worth several visits to digest the huge historical richness inside. Staff was always helpful. The Café was a lovely place to relax and the shop full of lovel maritime themed objects.
T. G.
Interesting exhibit generating lots of discussion amongst family members. Unfortunately, during our visit, the simulator wasn't working which disappointed younger members in our group. Had this not been the case I would have given you a 5 star rating. Well done, we look forward to visiting again.
J. F.
Fantastic museum, so much to see & do, easy accessible for wheelchairs, friendly & helpful staff, we're already looking forward to our next visit

Best place for relaxing time, with child and friend.
R. P.
So beautiful place to have fun.
T. B.
Popped in to pass the time, as we were staying in the Hotel next door.
Spent half an hour in the section covering Lord Nelson, fascinating (I was so absorbed by it I forgot to take any photos). 2 hours flew past. Want to go back and spend the day there. Would recommend to anyone.
E. F.
The National Maritime Museum, The Royal Observatory and the Greenwich area in general are a great place to spend the day. There is so much fantastic history to see here and it is a nice break from the crowds in London. My kids and I took the underground to here and back from tower hill for the day and had a really nice time.
N. H.
A super Museum highlighting how important the sea & Naval tradition has been to the Country. The exhibits are historical & interesting at the same time & the building itself oozes history. Staff are very friendly & knowledgeable & the Cafe is very good too.
G. G. M.
A fairly large museum, very well located, well organized, clean and with many interesting sections to see if you like this type of museum.
Boats, construction, style of the time, weapons, kids area. Etc
In addition there is a large area for children to play on a giant map on the ground and in turn can learn.
Recommended to visit
J. P.
Extremely interesting with lots to see, read, interact and learn. Spent just over an hour here but could have stayed twice as long. You need to book a timeslot to arrive, which we were able to do when we got there but not sure if you would need to do in advance on busier days
R. M.
Lovely museum! Location is great and staff very helpful and friendly. Even on a sunday afternoon when you think it would be pretty busy it was a lovely calmness walking around and enjoying the space. Very clean and airy and bright with wonderful exhibitions. Amazing!
O. W. F.
This museum is a really fun, free thing to do in London. Located in one of the best parks. We loved how different it us from the other museums. It is super interactive and hands-on for kids.
While here definitely visit the play area in the park, one of the best in the city. We also like to hire a pedalo boat in the boating pond, and the royal observatory. It’s a 15-minute walk from Cutty Sark underground station.
A. S.
Free museum. Great place to learn about the sea such as trades, war, speed competition, etc. For families, it's great museum. There is Ahoy gallery for under 8. It's relatively new and it's amazing. Teaching children about ship and life at sea. There is also a great map which occupies the first floor. Very cool to learn about the map. Little children can run around. Bigger children can borrow one of the interactive tablets to go on around the world voyage.
E.
Great Sunday fun. We booked the ahoy room for toddlers too. It's a great room. The ship simulation room is good for children too. There is plenty to do and to come back to.
F. T.
Really well organised museum which benefits visitors with a free entry and has a lot of history and artefacts as well you can enjoy a good scale battleships, old wooden ships and many other maritime goods. Totally recommended for a day out and you can include the Planetarium, Royal Observatory and Cutty Sark which are just a short walk away and the view is absolutely stunning
L. B.
Visited for Astronomy Photographer exhibition, fab, stunning images. Exhibition is chargeable but the rest of the museum is free. Nice coffee shops for a sit down during your visit.

Pre-booking tickets online are advisable before coming here. There was no queue when we arrived at 4pm and social distancing measures are in place. Directional arrow stickers and museum staff in strategic places to assist you with the one-way traffic once inside. Some galleries/rooms are closed, but there are still plenty to see. There is a café on the first floor. Would come back to see the rest of the museum as one hour was not enough for us to visit all the galleries.
J. P.
Best day out if u in london
A. M.
Wonderful place with a lot of knowledge, interactive attractions and very detailed replicas guiding us through the history of navigation. Rooms are separated by themes like commercial ships, war ships and others. All of this attached to the beauties of Greenwich Park and free entrance. You will also find a cafe and a gift shop if you want to take a time.
A. B.
Beautiful museum. Is a cozy place and a great pass by during holidays with the children. They will love it. Interactive area on the top floor with a guide which is borrowing a tablet which contains a game on it. The purpose of the game is related with the map glued on the floor. The staff is friendly and polite. There are lots of restrooms and is always a queue for woman's part. There are few banches around and you can have a sit. At the ground floor is a nice area for children but is a bit hidden and you need to ask (if is there any place more interractive for children) because no one will come to tell you.
E. W.
Great place to visit. Very informative. Really liked the interactive sections.
A. S.
Another wonderful & colorful free Museum in London. Since some time ago we were quite desperate to go here and we are so glad we made it. If you are a maritime fan and got an hour or two to spare whilts you are in Greenwich, then this is a must go pace. Various different activities to do as well. Thank you for maintaining and keep the museum tidy and clean. I recommend National Maritime Museum. Thanks.
S. G.
Great place to spend an afternoon. With a small walk to the observeratry. Great view of London City
N. B.
Went for a comedy show, was good venue.
P. F.
Visit this place regularly with our little boy. Exhibitions are interesting for adults, play room (need to prebook) is great for toddlers. Coffee on the world map whilst chi
I. N.
Fantastic place to visit but one day was not enough to explore everything so we'll definitely visit again! Kids absolutely loved the great map and the hands-on exhibition.
K. S.
A must for everyone interested in maritime history. An it's got free entrance. Some of the rooms are poorly lit (to protect the artifacts). And many of the texts are hard to read because of the small font and because they are placed to low. Why not supplement the texts with QR codes and let the guest use their smartphone. And give them an opportunity to re-read the texts at home?
S. M.
This was a very educational trip for my nephew. It is important to teach our children about how things were in the past to help them be more aspirational when we left he said he felt proud to be British and so did I. This is a very good museum and I think everyone should go especially if they are a millenial or younger
S.
This museum is beautiful and free go take a look 👌🏻👌🏻
F. B.
Very interesting museum. Lots of maritime items including a great selection of ancient figure heads of all sizes, shapes and colors. Touching historical items from the battle of Trafalgar and unique me morabilia from the great admiral Horatio Nelson. Great fun for children. They are able to play games with cannons and other things including a giant map of the world on the floor.
T. K.
I really enjoyed myself here!
Loads of exhibits charting the rich history of the UK maritime tradition! Well worth a visit... plus it’s free (donations gratefully accepted)
See how our great ocean faring ancestors braved the elements and explored the globe, and how modern technology continues this tradition!
c. y.
The museum is good in general, but I didn't find so many interesting things in it. We enjoyed the Greenwich Park a lot. Actually we spent most of the time in the park.
A. M.
Great place to visit, plenty of information on the history of ships, trade routes, the seas and plenty of exhibits to look at. Staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the museum and the exhibits.
Well worth a visit when you are in the area.
D. 1.
Very interesting displays. Also great for kids- especially the ship simulator.
d. 2.
Some interesting exhibits, but limited in number. Combine with visit to Cutty Sark and its a morning well spent.
N. P.
Lots to do with kids or without here. Check whether you need to book in advance though, some exhibitions require it (as does the soft play)
D. D. R.
Great maritime museum with free and paid for exhibits. Friendly staff. Can get very crowded. A stroller free day would be nice.
f. s.
excellent experience, well worth a visit if you are interested in the maritime history of England, free entry
j. a. g.
Very bad quality scarf.... 🙄😠😡
Museum store.
D.
A good day out in the museum with plenty to see, however it does get busy and hot on a warm day. The north entrance facing the college is imposing but it feels modern inside with all amenities. .
Interesting permanent exhibits for free. The paid for ones seem a little pricey for thier size and consequent lack of detail.
As half British half German myself the permanent Jutland exhibit was my favourite.
A. W.
Fantastic museum, lots to see without being exhaustive. Good workshops for kids too. And so nice and close to the park, observatory and Cutty Sark.
D. N.
Good day out for the family, interesting British Empire history
C. B.
Wonderfully organised and plenty of space for everyone. Not crowded at all. Stunning exhibits and great narration of history. Sonething for all ages
E. B.
Well worth a visit. Great cafes with lots to see and do. The displays are really interesting and well put together. The gift shop has some great books.
S. M.
Very interesting place . I been there for the first time with my baby and he was very interested about everything. I didn't expected this . The staff is very friendly and helpful. I really recommend this for exploring.
M. M.
Pleasant place to visit, good for Sunday trip, you might find here nice bits of history ie. British colonialism. This place is children friendly, but adults also can find something interesting...
T. B.
Took 2 under 2 year olds here. Both loved this place!!
Loads to do. Lots to explore and see, climb on, play with, do.
Amazing that it's all free.
Good disabled access n facilities.
Good cafe
Nice little shop.
Good free toilets for all.
F. H.
It's very interesting, lots of things to see
R. T.
Nice museum, you can take a walk at the Greenwich Park as well.
T. C.
Visited yesterday and it was a great. The DLR station is near by and there is a lift to use if you coming with a pushchair. You can leave your pushchair in one of many pushchair parking areas in the museum if your child is happy to walk around. Great museum for kids of all ages. There is a play area. That's what kids enjoyed most. You may even spend here your whole visit without seing the rest of the museum. Your kids may not want to leave this play area. That's why is best to see some of the museum 1st and then head to the play area. You can relax here while the kids run around.
If you prefer to have coffee while watching kids to play go to the upstairs Globe Cafe. The huge open area has a station where your children can get iPad and play great entertainment game of an explorer traveling around the world collecting treasure and souvenirs. It is suitable for kids age 5 and over. 6 or 7 year old can happily play it for over 30 mins without needing your attantion. You can watch them from distance and relax.
Worth to visit durong half term holidays as it is not as busy as other ones in central London. No queing to get in!
S. M.
Nice fun place to visit and kids enjoy running around the great world map they have. Also a lovely collection of very detailed scaled models of historical ships.
A. G.
What a great museum for children! In addition to several exhibits made for children, the other sections of the museum offered engaging displays with enough information for children to digest easily. Highly recommend; this was one of the highlights of our visit. Even tourists who don't favor museums would find a brief visit worthwhile.
M. P.
A great place for a family day out. Entrance is free. Lots of inter- activity for children. Nice cafe, plenty of room, both inside and outside.
S. F.
I recently took my son to the Maritime Museum for a fun afternoon. Having taken a school group here previously, I was familiar with the children’s play section, AHOY, and our experience lived up to my memory.
It is the perfect way for littlies to experience our maritime history. The area is open planned, but still sectioned off from the main galleries, so I felt confident letting my son run around and wasn’t afraid of him being lost in the general public. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and it was clean and tidy.
My son spent an actual age firing the air cannons, and who would have thought that shovelling coal would be a favourite pastime? We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be back again soon no doubt.
J. B.
Really great muesum that is geared towards families. The is an amazing childrens play area with lots of nautical themed play. This can get very busy. The great map by the café is great to have a wander around and the kids to play on the boats. Will be back.
L. C.
Lots of things to look, good for study of maritime history. The staff really helpful and friendly. Nice for a one day visit with family if maritime fans
F. H.
Fantastic place to visit for any fan of naval history. Excellent value for money, especially if you buy a ticket that gets you into all the attractions - will definitely be going back to look at what I didn’t have time to see. It is worth it for the Victory alone. Great place for families or interested individuals alike.
W. L.
Lots to see and do for young kids and for fans of anything maritime related. The softplay for the little ones needs booking at reception area. I believe its charged for on weekends (peak) and free for weekday visits.
E. W.
Great museum, lots of interesting things large and small. There's at least one cafe (I think two) inside, and they've got pre-made sandwiches, little pizzas, baked goods etc. at reasonable prices. Lots of cool things in the gift shop, and interesting rotating exhibits (with an entrance fee). While you're in the area, check out the Royal Observatory, explore Greenwich park, shop at Greenwich Market, cross the Thames with the underground tunnel, explore Canary Wharf, and maybe take a cable car ride on the Emirates Air Line!
t. h.
So much to see , absolutely 💯% fantastic place to visit.
L. P. R.
Might feel a bit dated at times, but it's extremely well cared for and a gem for kids 4 and up. Definitely worth a family visit.
P. G.
NMM was very good, however I was a bit confused by which museums were free and what exhibits were in which museum.
A. A.
On the pro side, it must be a great place to bring young kids: it has the activity corners, and enough space for running around. However, for adult visitors, especially with some background in history, the museum does not exactly live up to expectations. The exhibitions around the world wars could have been made much more interesting really.
K. B.
The Moon exhibition was extremely worth the visit. Many real artifacts that were worn and taken on the Apollo 11 missions. Samples of real moon rock and a telefax machine that was used to print very first pictures of the surface of the moon on. There was an Omega watch actually worn by Pete Conrad on the Apollo 12 mission. Original cameras used on the Apollo 11 missions. "ALL SO AMAZING"
R. B.
Great museum in a splendid location, with knowledgable guides. Nice children's area
N. G.
This museum has the uniform Lord Nelson was wearing st the time of his dead. Also personal accounts of ships surgeons. The Great Map is fun to explore, and the model ships are fantastic.
T. a. L.
Must visit once in London, it just has to be on everyone's list. Make it a day out, there's a lot to see when you're in Greenwich. Admission is free but donations are always welcome, or at least get something from the giftshop :)
M. B.
A collection of various artifacts from a variety of historical periods. I enjoyed the variety of artifacts. A wonderful room of impressionist paintings. I highly recommend.
K. P.
Fabulous museum with so many interesting exhibits. Great for all ages, lovely interactive area for young children and another area for older children. Definitely check out the Astronomy Photography exhibition when it's on the photos are stunning. Set next to Greenwich Park which is great for a nice walk after if you have time. The views from the top is magnificent.
F. T. E.
I thought we'd pop in for a quick peek, but it's an interactive museum that kept my kids entertained for more than a few hours. It's free and it's fun. Well worth a visit.
R. D.
Fascinating place, lots of school parties when we visited, so limited access to the displays. Enjoyable though.
R. D.
It is an amazing space with lots for children to see and do. The cafe down stairs showcases an array of good food. Food a bit on the expensive side so bring your packed lunch if you spending a great deal of time here.
S. W.
This is a really excellent experience. You could spend a large part of your day here, there is so much to see. The glass dome that was added in 2011, makes the museum so much better; a huge space for kids to play, but also some great additional exhibits.
You can’t got to Greenwich without visiting the Royal Observatory. Excellent view of the city as well as being at 0^0’0”. If you’re into the science and engineering of navigation and time, then this can’t be missed.
a. b.
Entry is free. There is a lot of information about ships and ship building. Good for kids as well. You'll need around 2-3 hours to cover all.
M. B.
Big park in London. Lots to do all year round. Walk , picnic, go for a boat ride to London main centre. There is a lot of history with the park and builders. If you go to the main town down the hill. To the rivet, lots of shops and pubs to eat. And there is a river bus, and a overground train. You can walk cycle to the famous dome. (The 02). As is know as. Well worth the visit..
D. R.
A great way to spend a few hours on a rainy day. Filled with lots of interesting art work, boats, figureheads and other nautical artefacts. Well laid out with lots staff on hand to answer any questions and queries.
D. R.
Absolutely informative and great. Been to greenwich so so many times and I wonder how did I miss this one for so many years??? We totally loved it and also met a very kind and nice volunteer who gave us quite a good information about different stuffs including the little duckling who travel around the world when it fell overboard from the ship when taken to US from Hongkong. My nephews totally enjoyed and loved every bit of the meseum.
K. G.
I never expected this awesome places would be FREE (you may donate if you wish). Trust me, this is a must visit if you are in London. It covers all aspects of marine history, be it discovery of new sea routes or living there or war ships everything. Also you must also try an actual Ship simulator (on level 2) which is also free
D. D.
Lovely. Throughly enjoyed it
j. h.
Amazing place to visit, make sure you have plenty of time as there's a lot to see.
N.
Enjoyed our visit, great exhibits. The Nelson exhibit was extremely interesting. A great day out.
A.
Had an absolute blast here with my son! Beautiful and totally worth it 👌
J. S.
...You must visit......100% positive place...
S. B.
It's pretty good there. Lots of interesting exhibits, hands on activities for children. You do not have to be totally into maritime history to enjoy it.
It's free admission, donations welcome.
Lovely park to view also, easy access for disabled people.
L. P.
Our first time, an amazing place, beautiful buildjng, very nice and friendly staff, great workshops for kids, we will come back next Sunday.
R. S.
Great place Need many days to go thru all the naval history
H. D.
Great museum and we didn't see half of it! Amazing that this is free entry. If you have kids remember Ahoy needs reservations at the weekend and holidays.
B. S.
A wonderful place showing all things maritime & nautical, at the northerly end of Greenwich Park. It's excellent for kids of all ages, and is both fascinating, educational and well designed for all generations. Also close to Greenwich Market and Greenwich Park playground. Would wholeheartedly recommend! :)
a. b.
First stop of the day, walking from Lewisham to the Tower of London. Great Cafe, coffee good, second time I have been in the last six months
D. F.
Fantastic museum building itself is spectacular exhibits very interesting
S. O.
An enjoyable visit. The kids enjoyed looking at the exhibitions, but spent most of their time running around the giant floor map. Unfortunately the children's gallery was closed. The kids also really enjoyed the boat simulation, where they got to navigate a boat.
J. W.
I wasn't sure what to expect but its Brilliant fun for kids and grown ups! I can't believe its free entry and its so good! There is a life size pirate ship to play on, guns, swords, buried treasure. It really brings history to life, the playroom for the kids is amazing too, the kids and their imaginations can run riot.
P. P.
The museum is quite interesting, with fascinating compositions. Everyone can find a hobby. I recommend it!
J. b.
Really good experience on our visit here so much to see and interact with 😁 lots of fun for the kids to 🚢💯👍
I. P.
Very nice museum without entrance fee. Well organised and quite large to enjoy many collections and ships.
V. G.
Excellent 3.5 hour visit. Our daughter really enjoyed her visit and gained a valuable experience. Brilliant interactive displays
Our second visit within 10 years but an enjoyable experience.
A. T.
Excellent day out. My son's really enjoyed visiting the Maritime museum. Lots of interactive things to do and things to see. Definitely would go again.
P. E.
A very huge n beautiful museum with a eye catching interior walls n pillars of every corners which was definitely worth visiting for, I really loved this museum n the best part was watching a dinosaurs show
S.
Retailed look at this nation's maritime history. Plenty of fascinating exhibits
G. C.
Thoroughly enjoyed this museum. Free entrance but you must book tickets online. Some exhibitions do require a payment but they didn't seem too interesting to me. There was plenty to see without those. Covid restrictions meant it really wasn't busy with lots of room.
M. D.
Really nice museum to visit with children. The learning centre is just perfect and not expensive (3£ per child) - new session starts every hour and lasts 45 mins. There is a cafe and picnic area too. Very satisfied with our visit.
B. T.
Good museum with plenty to see over multi-levels. Bright and modern, very clean. Good shops and facilities.
P. F.
Wonderful museum and the location is fantastic with so much history. Get the river taxi and see the sights on the Thames. (Even better on a clear night.) The moon exhibition was a great celebration of our facination with the moon through history and on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing.
M. A.
Great place to visit
M. R.
Been here several times. Enjoyed every visit. Greenwich is such a lovely place the museum is a big plus
A. C.
Great collection of naval artefacts through the ages. It's free entry and worth a visit when one visits Greenwich and Cutty Dark. Have at least three hours for satisfactory sightseeing.
G. S.
I'd been to the Royal Observatory and ran out of time to visit the main museum.
Managed half an hour, just to see the K1, K2, K3 marine chronometers. Enthralling display of Cook's instruments including the Kendall chronometer he took on his third voyage.
A guide called Graham was extremely knowledgeable about the whole subject. Made it very special.
I'll be back. Thank you!
R. R.
Nice museum with so much of details of history and marine realted stuff. Kids can get so much of knowledge. You can directly reach here from the royal observatory green wich mean time.
S. C.
This goes without saying, a must-see museum if you're in/visiting London. Cataloguing the impact of Britain's maritime history, you'll spending a good few hours exploring the different exhibitions. ( I arrived at 12.30pm and left at 4.45pm- so if you're a museum aficionado, give yourself loads of time....😎)
As I live locally, I'm definitely planning another weekend trip.
D. D.
Really interesting but some parts were closed. Still a good day spent there though. The kids enjoyed it.
J.
There are changing exhibits that keep it interesting for future visits. If available, I can recommend the astronomy photography exhibit.
N. B.
Few hours of diversion available here - a lot of naval history to get through with Britain clearly so if anything there could have been more. Best thing is its free.
M. M.
The museum isn't too big but you have a feeling that it's specious inside. I like as well that the entrance is free and if you want you can donate some money (they suggest £3). There's also the area for kids to explore!
B. A.
Top ten UK visitor attraction, Royal Museums Greenwich is home to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the iconic historic sailing ship Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Queen’s House art gallery. All attractions within easy walking distance of each other within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
M. L.
Fantastic museum with many interesting exhibits. Child-friendly with child-orientated exhibits. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Cafe serves great food & drinks with both indoor and outdoor seating.
R. S.
Very nice place, with a lot of great things to see. Ve visited at easter when it vas free. A great afternoon. A must for those who love history and ships.
A. S.
Good value as it's free and kids will love it. History is amazing and there is fantastic artifacts from Nelson
J. R.
Went as part of a school trip with 5-6 year olds, it was lovely but some of the staff aren’t particularly friendly to kids which was a shame as there’s so much there for them to learn and enjoy. We all enjoyed it though
E. S.
A big part of British history is shown here, special about exploring the world over the seas and making a colonies, about slaveries and deliberation.
M. C.
Fantastic place to visit, especially if you have a portrait off a relative hanging around the place, who was awarded the VC, in the battle of jutland, rest in peace Jack,
V. L.
Fantastic museum for those who love ships and the history of naval warfare. I could not get enough of the details and stories you can find there.
M. A.
A high quality museum. My wife and son(4) went to the kids area and I toured through the exhibits. There are great artifacts on display from various battles and navel events, its difficult to comprehend the scope of British navel history. The kids area was a hit as well. Cranes and canon simulators are always going to go over well with kids! This was one of his favorite stops on our trip.
S. G.
One of my favorite museums in London with brilliant play ground for kind. I often visit it as my two years old sister loves it. Highly recommend everyone who have kids to take them there.
I really wanted to take pictures of the play ground, but unfortunately it wasn't allowed.
N. M.
Lots of things too look at interesting space and building!
S. C.
It was a great experience its a great place to take young children
B. M.
All the years I have ventured to Greenwich and somehow I missed this little gem! So now the kids are grown up and have left home I finally ventured in.
What a treasure trove it is: fabulous exhibitions about trade, exploration, the Polar regions and how we need to save our oceans. I was also pleased to see that the museum are addressing the issue of the slave trade and colonialism in a way that starts to address the wrongs that made this country rich.
Currently, there is also a free photographic exhibition of people who live with the extremes of the ocean. It is fabulous and also a reminder of how tough and dangerous the sea is.
Now I have discovered this jewel I am going to have to borrow young children to have fun exploring it again.
L. H.
Didn't have a lot of time. It was interesting. The Battle of Trafalgar exhibit could have been more dynamic.
P. H.
Scary to see the actual clothes that nelson died in
L. J.
Lovely place, kids loved it and the staff were very professional and friendly.
S. F.
This is just a brilliant museum, I love it :)
J. T.
Great place to spend the day. The museum is fascination and exhibitions well thought out and presented well.
C. W.
Lots of interesting things to see, good to know more the history of maritime, theres a cafe inside so you can have something to drink and eat after you go around. You can take your kids as well. Good for a day to visit as theres a lot more musuem around.
H. R.
A great day out for the family! The staff are so friendly and Greenwich is just beautiful
l. L.
Very good museum, lots of interesting artifacts. My son very happy that you have something on the titanic. Also happy you lots of interaction for kids to play and have a go on.
D. G.
Great space, with some amazing exhibits - a good place to lean about Britain's rich maritime history in an open, spacious and airy atmosphere. Take a look for yourself but be prepared to spend more time or a return visit here...
C.
A nice place to spend an hour or two especially for families. Not a whole lot to see though in my opinion. Free entry.
L. M.
The museum was really interesting. The Ahoy gallery was a bit of a disappointment for the children. Not worth booking and paying for it. There are more interesting parts of the museum especially the huge world map and the Hands on gallery.
G. B.
You have to see Nelson's coat as worn at Trafalgar, amazing piece of history!
K. R.
Great being there when it's not too busy. Plenty of space to have a meaningful study of exhibits.
K. C.
Brilliant museum, particularly for children. Lots of things for young children to do. Really thoughtful.
A. P.
Love, love, love the museum. It was the one thing my eldest wanted to tick off his list on our trip back to our old hood in Greenwich. Wonderful to visit when he was 2 years older!
K. W.
Worth it! Great selection of maritime history and it's FREE! What's not to like...?
E. P.
Great location, nice restaurant... Used to have a nice play area for kids. It is worth a visit. Some interesting exhibitions every now and then.
H. S.
What a nice museum! Located in the corner of Greenwich park, the national maritime museum items to public for free albeit they charge 10 pounds for the photo gallery. It's a nice place to learn and spend time with your little ones. It has couple of restaurant, I highly suggest the roof top one!
J. S.
Great day out for every age, with lots of interesting things to see and learn about.
O. N.
If a desire to come back again means something, I must say I have it. Have not managed to see much. But want to check me without kids as well and take my own time exploring.
P. R.
It took me some time to sort out how I had navigated the displays and whether I had missed any. I think I did, but was not able to figure out what, even while studying the building map. Sections of display relate to particular periods of significant activity of the Navy and of the East India Company. Interestingly, not every display proclaims the virtue of empire and some are downright disparaging of it. Good on you, museum directors!
I am very interested in the development of ship forms and rigging. To that end, I was only slightly disappointed in the selection of displayed models and paintings. Only slightly, because there is a lot of material for this one museum to cover and so nothing really gets done in depth. A high level, general history is displayed and displayed well.
A. K.
I really enjoyed this museum, it has some really interesting galleries. The highlight for me was Lord Nelsons jacket.
s. s.
One of the best museum in London, The Museum has 14 different galleries to explore. Great thing it’s free 😎
ENTRANCE IS FREE!!! One of the best museums I've ever seen. The building by its own is a masterpiece but inside is more interesting. If you like maritime things you're going to love it. You can find and see(explore) everything that happened from the very beginning of maritime from sailing till the now years of engines

Great museum, will take the Grandchildren again
R. D.
Lovely site, easy to get to and looked very clean and up to date. Great play areas for all ages and a nice cafe too with hot food, loads to see and some interesting gifts at the shop too. Definitely coming again as barely scratched the surface. Staff were lovely too, very nice to us.
A. R.
Some great exhibits.
Some great areas for the kids to play and interact.
J. G.
Went with the intention to only visit the astronomy photographer of the year exhibition, which was fascinating and beautiful. But i had no idea the museum offers so much more, had a great time walking around as well as walking up to the observatory to be treated with stunning views of London
K. W.
We took the boat from Victoria Wharf to Greenwich. The National Maritime Museum is behind the Naval Academy. It is huge. It is free. It is fascinating. You could spend hours there. It is family oriented. It has bathrooms, restaurants, gift shop. Close by is the Cutty Sark.
G. K.
Free entry, well informative, neatly maintained. Walkable distance from Queens house, planetarium, cutisark boat and tunnel
A. S.
Good place... Worth visiting... Do visit the observatory at the very back representing the highest point on to see all london...
A. F.
We love this place! The info and pieces are perfectly displayed! The giant World's map on the floor is amazing. The shop has lots of souveniers. It's a London's must!!!
O. A.
This place its huge.... we couldnt see all of it because we arrived quite late but its really really good and very recommended
K. (.
Only visited the free area and thought it was excellent, well worth a visit.
M. B.
Such an informative and fun day out! Lots of information and activities and the exhibits are interactive in some cases (pun intended). All for free too!
D. J.
It was one very interesting museum. You will get to know a lot ke things about usually a subject that not many of us know enough about.
S. A.
Free admission, great place for kids. Lots of history stories and paintings
S. L.
A good museum, and fantastic grounds, any ex RN visitors will 'feel' the history in this place, and the surrounding area.
J. C.
A beautiful museum with lots to see. There is plenty of activities for young children to enjoy and being located by Greenwich park, it is an ideal place to go as a family.
S. A.
While I found most of the exhibits interesting I was a bit dissapointed at the lack of exhibits from the 1st and 2nd World wars. No mention of D Day or 2nd WW ships or anything else from that period. Nothing about the modern Royal Navy either. I thought it was a National Maritime Museum. Very poor really.
K. S.
Kids wanted to go,so we went and spent 2hrs walking round, staff was lovely.
B. B.
Wonderful museum, it was instrumental in building my passion for history.
M. F.
Such an awesome place! It is free for everyone (although a 5 pound donation is suggested). So much amazing history here and a lot to do if you have kids or teenagers. The cafe was brilliant and the only complaint I have is that I didn't leave myself enough time to see everything.
R. S.
Excellent information presented in an engaging way. Well maintained and well organized. Definitely worth a visit. There are other attractions nearby too.
M. M.
This is an absolute must visit if you are in the area. It is free and set on the UNESCO World Heritage Greenwich site. There is a café within and the museum has a wonderful collection of maritime objects.
S. N.
Lovely museum, very covid safe and still has a lot to offer for kids to be entertained. Lovely cafe which you can order from through the website straight to your table. The food is delicious too and there is a kids menu.
A. R. E. M.
It's a fine museum but by the time I got there, I was sore and exhausted from sightseeing London. To add salt to my discomfort, the very exhibit I had wanted to see was closed and wouldn't open to the public for another two months. Damn!
M. S.
Love this place , really enjoyed the Polar exhibition and The portraits of monarchs from The Tudors to the present day
H. T.
Interesting museum that describes the importance of naval activities to the history of Great Britain. Some amazing ship models, plus galleries dedicated to Nelson and Polar Exploration. The gallery devoted to commerce in the Atlantic is outdated and is currently being refurbished. There's lots for children here, as there are a wealth of hands-on activities. In addition, there's an impressive global map near the Cafe area on the 2nd floor.
D. D.
Incredible place
Especially Nelson section
V. M.
Loved spending three hours in the museum. My husband loves anything to do with Admiral Nelson . So the room full of artefacts was particularly interesting. The room attendants were very knowledgeable and pointed out things we may have missed. I can't believe this museum is still free. We had coffee in the outside cafe before we came home. We had a lovely day in Greenwich and the museum has improved and expanded since we last visited many years ago. Full marks to the curators and creators.
A.
Amazing throughly enjoyed our visit 👍
J. P.
The place is fantastic for families. Children love the atmosphere. The food is good and is child friendly. Great for a family day out.
C. B.
OMG!!!!!!! What words can I use!!?? Stunning 😍breathtaking amazing awesome and frkmnthe museum itself walking 🚶♀️up the massive hill to the observatory is worth every penny of the ticket 🎟price ++++ visiting the Cutty Sark ship on the River Thames not far from the O2 arena!!!👋🌟👍⭐⚘🤩🎊

Really enjoyed visiting the National Maritime Museum. Lots to see and very educational. Great family experience and friendly helpful staff. Would highly recommend.
A. J.
Great place for day out .....
E. P.
One way system in place was good, slightly trick with toddlers in tow but found staff really helpful including one who anticipated our needs for a break and helped us take a shortcut.
Upstairs cafe by global map was closed.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how engaged and proactive the staff were on Wed 2nd of June. Significantly better than previous visit.
L. B.
It's very different because of covid restrictions. The one way system was good because I saw different parts I haven't seen before but it was a long walk round. The childrens gallery, bridge and other play area are all closed so it's a different experience to before. Also no cafe by map but there are tables to sit at.
S. F. K.
Cutty Sark shipping around the world
M. G.
We enjoyed our visit, the covid safe route saw us walking around the whole museum we were there for a few hours browsing, best elements were Antarctic explorer sector and the royal navy history with Nelson section. Lots of great interactive displays, and interesting information to read. Something of a surprise...we had no idea what to expect so it exceeded expectations.
For those without young children under 12, I would also recommend booking a ticket to see paintings in adjoining Queen's House, the museums are so close, and that too was well worth visiting.
M. J.
Love the giant ship in a bottle, you could probably sail around the world in it, well almost. Great place for the maritime buffs, I particularly like all the ships figureheads, there are some real gems here.
D. C.
Came here specifically for the Tudor to Windsor portrait exhibition which was brilliant and so well laid out and informative. Lots of sanitation as well as one way systems in place. Will need to come back to enjoy the main exhibits.
M. H.
Very interesting, clean, well laid out. Something for everyone.

B. F.
a really good place to visit while you are in London, it's free entry and holds many things related to ship and history
D. B.
Fascinating place, need time to explore and more than one day I think!
O. S.
I've been here many times in the past, especially up to the observatory, and I love the view and the range of historical information; however, I was highly disappointed to find that you can no longer view the Greenwich meantime line without paying. (I know that it also goes through the park, but its not the point of origin)!
J. L.
An excellent free museum coving much history and multiple narratives relating to the sea and all travel therein. Highly recommended.

[alternative review]
I run past the back of the Museum which faces the inside of the park. If the weather is good with clear skies (be it cold winter or warm summer evenings) the stretch which passes it is always a joy to jog/run/walk by
E. C.
Amazing to see the coat Nelson died in! Enjoyed my visit. Loved the ship in a bottle outside, there was so much to see. The polar gallery was amazing
T. O.
Free museum in the beautiful Greenwich Park. Lots of interesting exhibits with historical backgrounds to Britain's seafaring past. There are several cafes and a children's floor with interactive displays.
M. C.
it's my first time I visit this museum, and wow, it's terrific, the children area is amazing, my daughter enjoyed a lot in ahoy, the children's gallery. They've got a picnic area and a coffe shop to eat something
R. C.
As the name suggests it gives overview of naval history of the empire in different sections like Arctic explorers, battle of Trafalgar, Pacific Islands and much more. It is free in with some paid exhibitions. You need 1-2 hours to be able get through everything maybe longer.
F. E.
If you are looking for a historical maritime experience, this is a great place for both adults and children
j. K.
If you are into photography this is a great spot to take some images.

T. L.
It was amazing to visit the Maritime museum. We also saw the Prime Meridian line as well

A very detailed exhibit of the Battle of Trafalgar.. excellent overview of the British seafaring capability of the past 250-300 years which made it a superpower at high seas..!!
A. B.
It's a Very Small Museum but it's very charming, il admit I didn't get to fully explore what they had to offer as it came close to closing but I will return and update this review with any necessary or helpful information

Very interesting. Great cafe. Easy to get to. Helpful staff.

This was one of our "stop off" points. Cutty Sark was I teresting to look at but I wasn't up to walking around it. Will do it on next visit

S. I. R.
Amazing, interactive place. Great for children and adults
S. S.
A must visit place when visiting Greenwich park. Along with revisiting maritime history and detailed ship models, lots of fun stuff for kids too.
T. G.
Good news! The National Maritime Museum is open for the public again. But you have to book your free online ticket before entry. This outstanding location is not only good for educational purposes but is also good for a family day out, the cruise ships are open, Greenwich foot tunnel takes you from the south side to the north ( vice versa ) within 10 minutes. However the lift on the north side of the foot tunnel is not currently in use in case someone plans to visit their. The Outstanding cutty sark ship stands proudly with a great restaurant beneath it. Also the food court and seating areas are good to have as well.
P.S don't forget about the Santander bikes that are their to hire for a certain period of time.
N. N.
although children play room is closed, my little girl still had great fun and learnt so much in museum. It has so much to see and explore. Currently has special exhibitions so worth a visit , however tickets all need to be booked in advance for entrance.
s. b.
Very interesting...and Turner's Battle of Trafalgar, really his masterpiece
N. D.
Among the best museums in London. Especially the section for the Trafalgar is awesome , i was deeply moved. There is a huge variety of things to do with your child.

M. M.
Very nice historical place for whole family to spend quality time. Musseum is free entrance and university grounds nice for walk. Also Cutty Sark a great ship to admire. Just note if you going with family it's good to refresh history knowledge as kids do have lots of questions. Overall nice day out guarantee.
I. H.
Wonderful exhibitions, a genuinely enjoyable experience.
A. A.
Amazing content but would have liked some sort of direction or route to follow as there is a lot to see and you can get a bit lost
C. R.
Love that place ,a bit of History didn't kill anyone yet
D. R.
I love this place! Have been twice already and would like to go again.
E. T.
Incredible place. Leave a good 3 hours to enjoy it. Will be returning when we start learning about the age of exploration as this is the ideal place to complement this study
D. “. M.
Not as fun for the kids, but still a good morning out
H.
Entry staff were polite but very confusing. The museum is free to enter however they request you to have a digital or physical free ticket to enter. Some exhibits are chargeable.
S.
Very large museum with loads of different items and exhibits to see. Definitely worth a visit.
R. R.
Really worth a visit. We spent 2 hours here after visiting the Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory and still didn't have enough time to get around before it closed. We will be back to finish off the rest of the galleries and exhibits.
Kids will love the Great Map where they can use ipads to navigate around with augmented reality views.
E. R.

We had a great time both inside and in the grounds. The weather was amazing so we spent hours just chilling and taking it all in.
D. B.
One of London's top museums. Well worth visiting and hosts great exhibitions as well. Lots of stuff to do in surrounding areas including The Queens House and the Royal Observatory. Travel here by river and make it a day out.
H. C.
Loved this place, there were lots of well laid our displays over three floors, the highlight for me was the glass that had been salvaged from ships. This is the kind of place I wasn't sure about but It was amazing.
P. T.
Family friendly museum, multiple exhibits and and free to enter!
S. G.
Great looking museum.
Track and traces impressive 👏 best i have used.
Talked to 4 members of staff who are very friendly but not one made any attempt to explain that most of the museum is not open you basically walk through the first hall that is it!! 2 side galleries one about the stars then your in the shop and café and the way out.
I would like to think that more communication would be useful to visitors.
I no it a great museum as I have read reviews and friends have recommended.
P. S.
I'm a local so love this museum and usually there's so much to see and do - shops, kids section, museum. Of course this is all now changed. You have to book in advance (still free), 15 min time slots. They have a one way system which starts at the front, finishes at the back (by the cafe) and masks worn all the time. Felt very safe, lots of hand sanitisation, plenty of space and distance and had the chance to really look at the exhibits which are great. The kids play area is shut as are the cafes by the floor map but still worth going to.
S. E.
It was a lovely experience. Toilet was clean and its a visit that should not be rushed. Went on a holiday was a bit busy. Good place to visit with a family.
R. F.
Really disappointed with 60% of areas. Polar and Nelson exhibits very good .signage poor . Prices in cafe disgusting, 2 cans of coke and 2 small ice cream tubs cost £10.20
J. P.
Free entrance. There are courses for children and many other interesting things.
