Reviews of Newport Street Gallery
E. G.
Went to see the photo realistic paintings by Richard Estes here.. received a warm welcome at the desk.. wonderful work displayed in spacious bright clean rooms..
The crowning glory for me were the staircases that take you up and down between floors - a work of art in their own right..
D. B.
Wonderful exhibition of Richard Estes' work! Lovely gallery too. Hadn't been there until today. Will visit again.
P. M.
Excellent art gallery with an equally stunning and jaw dropping exhibit of Richard Estes 'photo realist' artwork. Simply amazing and don't miss it!
B. H.
Great art gallery and completely free! Huge ceilings and bright white space with fab contemporary art exhibition. Friendly staff and cool Damien Hurst cafe (although not open when I went). Loved it!
A. P.
I’m always impressed with this gallery. The staff are always welcoming, the exhibitions are always great and it’s free! The architecture is lovely, lots of natural light to see the works by. There are also lockers if you want to stow your bags. The restaurant wasn’t open when I was there on Sunday and there didn’t seem to be much in the area in the way of refreshments, so I’d recommend planning ahead if you want to work lunch around your trip.
R. L.
Impressive art if you find yourself with spare time in your week
M. S.
Impressive gallery - enjoyed the Richard Estes exhibition
E.
Currently showing a retrospective of Damian Hurst from over the years. All of usual pickled sharks, rotting cowheads and dot paintings. Well worth a visit to see all of the works together and the chronology.
B. H.
Went to see an exhibition of Richard Estes and was amazing. Really enjoyed it. Staff is very welcoming and the gallery itself is impressive. Will come back
S. K.
This is like a greatest hits of Damien Hirst show. I have seen many of these exhibits in previous shows elsewhere in the world and it was great to see this particular assembly of work. I wish they had a gift shop with signed exhibition merchandise, like posters and books.
G. R.
Nice art gallery. It's worth it to visit it. It's not too big, what I prefer because you can enjoy quickly and have a coffee when you finish. Also, it's not as busy as other art galleries in London. The Caffe looks like a pharmacy, what is a bit weird, but also ingesting. There is mainly modern art with interesting concept. I can't confirm, but probably they change the exhibition periodically.
X. S.
Nice place and remarkable artworks on exhibition. However there are no certainly number showing which artwork is which, quite hard for me to figure out which description related to. It's Ashley Bickerton on show, which is a super modern exhibition, probably bit too much for younger age kids.
Staffs are very friendly, I m a solo visiter so I asked some staffs took photos for me, and they are lovely! Thank you!
Also, cafe on first floor is well designed, I only had scones they were alright but it's an affordable price in this awesome place!
M. P.
First time visiting this gallery for the Dan Colen exhibition. Friendly front desk staff and large sculpture and pieces of art displayed. Would have liked to see a bit more art fit into the space, but we enjoyed our visit.
A. J.
Lovely spacious gallery. Shame no shop anymore to purchase items 😢
A. S.
Beautiful gallery! Not all the art was not to my taste but I’d definitely come back for future exhibitions as it’s a really nice space. Free lockers and lovely cafe too.
M. S.
It's one of my favourite galleries in London. I've never been to a bad exhibition there. The space is just beautiful. I love the ambience. It's small so you can easily walk around it twice to really get to know the art. Pictures are from the Parasites exhibition by Martin Eder. Bizarre, excellent and engrossing.
K. W.
Went to Damien Hirst exhibition. Perfect timing for me as I just bought some of his art. Will take an hour to leisurely stroll through. Newport gallery staff were welcoming, friendly and the place was clean. The gallery is tucked away from main road surrounded by flats and is not so close to a main tube station so will involve walking around lonely area. I was a little lost even with satnav so it may make some a little uneasy walking there. Plan your route or go with friends.
W. B.
A beautiful gallery.
With glorious high ceilings and natural light, and a amazing staircase, this building is a real gem. It is off the beaten track, but definitely worth visiting. Shows are made up of primarily from works within Damien Hirst's collection. He clearly has a talent for buying as well as creating art.
Also worth visiting the Pharmacy cafe. I was expecting ridiculous prices, but the opposite was true. Delicious tea and cakes at a decent price. Beer and wine available too.
Recommended.
M. B.
Modern art gallery - not for everybody's taste, but I would encourage you to go even if you're not a fan. The space is very well designed, the cafe (naturally designed by Damien Hirst) is excellent, and as for the exhibitions, they are grand in scope, without being so big they overwhelm.
T. W.
Super space a short walk from Lambeth Palace and the river. Free entry and currently some superb exhibits of work from Helen Beard, Sadie Laska and Boo Saville.
The gallery itself is worth the visit, and the location of Pharmacy inside provides an opportunity for refreshment.
A. P.
Nice gallery with a good collection. Loved the bar, but it was closed when we got there, so need to come earlier next time.
T. W.
Beautiful gallery with 5 interesting volumes, each with great light quality. Brick lined stair was fantastic.
Polarising Gavin Turk exhibition, especially the signature and manikin rooms.
Incredible use of bronze.
T. C.
Interesting place to spend an hour or two. Looking forward to coming back here for other exhibitions. And what I love about most London galleries is it's all free!
A. P.
I’ve been living nearby this gallery for at leas 4 months and I’m so sad I’ve discovered it only now! It’s a beautiful building, the art selection is vary and curated and the caffettiera inside offers amazing coffees and tasty cakes: perfect for your breakfast! Prices are fair and the atmosphere is magical!
@aurorapanero
M. M.
Very interesting space and the type of exhibitions they put up quite unique and different from the rest of the galleries in London. The place itself is a little bit out of the way and they could use a bit more signage directing you how to get there and where the actual entrance is. Coffee shop in this place also looks quite cool it is a very interesting concept based on a pharmacy.
R. R.
I’m confused how this gallery is free, always amazing exhibitions with brilliant Artists.
Please don’t stop
J. B.
Always interesting, unusual art work. I love the whole Vauxhall area, so much to see
B. S.
Saw Jeff Koons exhibition a few months ago and it was epic - art & space working in harmony. Can see why the building won the Stirling Prize - a memorable morning out :)
K. K.
One of the best, unkown galleries in London.
This is Damien Hurst's galley. Beautiful building, worth visiting just for that.
Cloakroom costs £1, which you get back after.
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Must visit.
Secret cafe on the second floor, designed by Damien.
FYI - No gift shop.
D.
What an extraordinary building; even if you don't like the current exhibition (John Hoyland at the moment); you should definitely go if you admire beautiful architecture.
I'm looking forward to the next exhibition and a visit to Pharmacy2.
D. H.
Great place to have a wonder if you have a spare hour in the area. The front desk staff are very kind and fun. The bar serves a great macchiato, super smooth, rich in flavour and great aroma. Looking forward to comback here to see what's new. But for such a modern place electronic map would be great unless I missed something and they have lockers !
K. M.
Great gallery space and visit for the Pharmacy 2 cafe, its quirky and fun.
D. F.
Interesting venue and thoroughly enjoyed the Richard Estes exhibition.
s. z.
Incredible venue. Cutting edge exhibitions. No entrance fee. Friendly service from the security and reception teams. Excellent restaurant. Highly recommended.
A. J.
Good to see the old gems again. The old formaldehyde must of had an affect on preserving the freshness of the pieces in my mind after all the years gone by. Worth a visit.
M. C.
Currently showing a collection of Damien Hurst work. Over 50 works on display. The gallery is on two floors with a lift available. Entry is free.
E. M. B.
Gentle staff and nice architecture. Even if I didn’t like at all the exposition
T. V.
Went to the Damien Hirst retrospective. Well chosen pieces, thoughtfully displayed, well curated. But there was no.program available and COVID one way system prevented us from returning to pieces for comparison and discussion. And the cafe was closed! Valiant effort though and we did enjoy it.
L. G.
Nice place for a first date!
W. N.
Locating is tricky and the gallery space is rather austere, but art enthusiasts will be pleased they made the journey. Be sure to stop by the in-house Prescriptions bar for refreshments.
H. “. L.
Damien Hurst show it was a experience (not vegan/vegetarian friendly for obvious reasons)
B. G.
Amazing free exhibition - would highly recommend.
H. L.
Great gallery space with exciting art!
S. S.
A great experience, actually one of the best. I've reviewed it after a visiting many times seeing the likes of Gavin Turk, Jeff Koons and John Hoyland, and I'm always blown away. DH own work currently on, is superb. Five stars and its free!
M. U.
Great gallery. We saw the free Damien Hirst exhibition which was interesting, but perhaps not ideal for young kids
C. H.
Beautiful gallery, currently showing striking paintings by John Copeland
P. H.
Amazing gallery with stunning premises and beautiful choice of art. Thanks to that gallery I learnt something new about British art. Also liked the customer services like the bar with special interior design and things like the spacious lockers for baggage, which as we found later, is not be expected in some other galleries. On top of that it's free and later that day we even saw Mr. Hirst in the city. :) Great experience. Recommended.
D.
Great fun Damian Hurst exhibition with cats & more !
M. G. D. S.
Excellent collection by Richard Estes in a beautiful space with helpful staff
A.
Enjoyed the Damian Hurst exhibition.
D.
What an extraordinary building; even if you don't like the current exhibition (John Hoyland at the moment); you should definitely go if you admire beautiful architecture. …
W. N.
Locating is tricky and the gallery space is rather austere, but art enthusiasts will be pleased they made the journey. Be sure to stop by the in-house Prescriptions bar for refreshments.
K. W.
Always interesting exhibitions on
G. A.
A good place to listen to art....
B. K.
Amazing exhibition,also very clean
T. F.
Space is beautiful.
S. S.
A great experience, actually one of the best. I've reviewed it after a visiting many times seeing the likes of Gavin Turk, Jeff Koons and John Hoyland, and I'm always blown away. DH own work currently on, is superb. Five stars and its free!
f. h.
Nice place.
I found it very relaxing.
Not to crowded so perfect for social distancing.
Its free aswell.
W. F.
Welcoming and bright
C. C. L.
Newport street galley is very approachable. The gallery itself still pretty new and not too famous yet. So you don't have hide and seek from the crowed while visiting the exhibition. Strongly recommend the restaurant on the first floor!
M. G.
Beautiful building and spacious gallery. Content can be seemingly random so do your research before each exhibition. Should definitely visit the bar. It's decorated with pills.
p. b.
+ This place was found to be alright.Friendly, with informative reception staff.Really interesting exhibition, with a nice & pleasant meal afterwards.
- More floor space would help.
Restaurant a little slow & it really needs to serve larger& hotter,'hot meals' on hot plates.
However,would recommend.Good ambiance.
G. C.
Thoughts on Koons aside, I really adore the Newport Street Gallery. It's small and, in Vauxhall, kind of out of the way. But that adds to its charm in a way. It's a "small" gallery, but also quite roomy...I know that is a contradiction of terms, but just roll with it, I'd happily visit Newport Street Gallery again (and again) (and again).
H. K.
Exhibitions are always good. Great opportunity to see incredible artists without the crowds. Definitely one the best galleries in London. Not huge but it is 100% worth the visit.
A. L.
I LOVED the Jeff Koons Now exhibition. I wasn't all that impressed by the first room but the rest was jaw dropping cool and fantastical. I love that this gallery allows photography of the PG works as sometimes it helps a lot with seeing something from a different perspective. I also love the two staircases and the easy to use lockers so you can enjoy with lugging your bag around. I love the white space which makes the art pop.
M. B.
A really beautiful gallery and work of architecture. Large, bright rooms ideal for huge pieces though not a huge place so it's more than fine for an hour or so. The Art? Well so far it's been OK
P. P.
Lovely gallery and cafe bar. Great art, but didn’t appreciate being told off like a child for sipping some water from my bottle. It’s not allowed apparently.
F. A.
One of my favorite galleries in London. Exhibitions always unique.
Galley itself pleasure to visit... architecturally looks simple but spiral wooden stair tower design apparently complicated. Galley never overcrowded. Staff excellent.
S. C.
Disappointed with the paintings, but the noisy wooden staircases work quite well as performance art. The pharmacy themed café is amusing, but can't compare with the real pharmacy at St Thomas's Hospital where you could watch cute robots scuttling about with boxes of pills.
M. Y.
Small but modern gallery showing a good selection of contemporary work, set within the Stirling Prize winning building by Caruso St John.
n. c.
Abstract Observational Impressionist wonderland .
Pharmacy2 cafe provides selected , tasteful refreshments in eminently photogenic surrounds .
Cameras/phones sans flash tolerated throughout Damien Hurst's mindblowing menagerie of Assemblages Fantastique .
Incroyable !;!
j. b.
One dimensional façade inspired by Bart Simpson's hairstylist fronts a singular and exceptional interior.
Stylish, functional, spacious and a resounding success.
No need to dispense with popping into the restaurant.
A. W.
Really well laid out gallery that shows a good range of contemporary art. The Pharmacy restaurant is great but book on the weekends as it can get crowded for the good exhibitions.
N. M.
Really well-curated place (as you'd expect) plus the bonus of legit fine dining in a restaurant that is also an artwork. I mean, be prepared for a bit of w**k as it's modern art (Gavin Turk's signatures made me want to punch everyone in the world) but a nice representation of it. The Koons retrospective was awesome! Also defo eat lunch here. And use the lift.
E. P.
Beautiful space, helpful staff and some interesting art from Hurst's collection (I saw Copeland and Howard). Don't miss the spiral staircases and the Pharmacy cafe!
J. M.
One of the best galleries in London. Not only the exhibitions are incredibly interesting but also the building itself is beautifully designed. I will continue to come back
M. D.
Brilliant Modern Gallery, great exhibitions
K. 1.
The Newport Street Gallery is an art gallery in London, England which displays works selected from the personal art collection of Damien Hirst. It is located on Newport Street Vauxhall. Newport Street Gallery is the realisation of Hirst’s long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. Hirst announced plans for the gallery in March 2012, and it opened in October 2015. It includes a cafe, gallery shop and offices for Hirst's company.
The building is a former theatre carpentry and scenery production workshop, redesigned by Caruso St John. The design was praised for its "virtuosity", and in October 2016 it won the RIBA Stirling Prize. The gallery spans 37,000 square feet and includes six exhibition spaces – one with a ceiling height of 11 metres – split over two levels.
M. A.
Great architectural space, interesting exhibits and completely free. As it's slightly off the beaten track, not usually busy. Thanks Damien!
C. N.
Lovely space, great art, pharmacy Cafe is amazing and very helpful staff.
Am in this Cafe, blown away, designed by Damien Hirst, it's unbelievable.
J. H.
This is fantastic space to exhibit art. Very well deserving of its RIBA award. The art has to be good to not be upstaged by the building. Visit the pharmacy2 if you aren't taking any medication.
D. P.
A lot smaller than I thought. Only 6 different exhibition rooms holding a couple of art piece each. Don't expect to spend more than 1 hour in the museum.
K. Z.
Engaging, concept-driven gallery showcasing Damien Hirst's curation. The pharmacy-themed restaurant/bar is well designed with exceptional detail; it is not for the easily queasy. I praise it for its dark humorous take on the collective experience of modern medicine. The shop is not connected to the main building but down the road. I see it as a deliberate statement of the divorce from tradition and commercialism.
Facilities 4.5 stars: Lockers are big enough to fit cabin sized bags and is £1 deposit. Escalator fits scrolls but toilets could be cleaner. Wifi is free, log in guest wifi with your social media.
Staff 5 stars: Staff is very friendly especially the guy in the shop.
Estimated visit time: 1 hour
P. S.
Fantastic gallery, really nice and open space. The exhibitions were all great and the staff were funny and friendly. Recommend a visit.
C. S.
If you are a keen photographer this is well worth the effort to get there for the fascinating spiral staircases which make interesting images. Friendly staff and a light and airy gallery.
A. S.
Nice collection of art by Estes
f. h.
Nice place.
I found it very relaxing.
Not to crowded so perfect for social distancing.
Its free aswell.
M. M.
Architecturally fantastic but shows can vary obviously. My personal recommendation is that if the show is not to your taste then have a cup of tea in the Pharmacy restaurant which is an experience in itself.
m. w.
Lovely art gallery. So quiet when I went which it shouldn't be! The John Copeland exhibition was amazing.
K. W.
Always interesting exhibitions on
I. H.
Interesting piece of architecture in a smashed-up part of Lambeth likely to soar in the coming years. Damien Hirst displays his prized collections, with John Hoyland first up. Great gift shop, sparkly skulls and pictures of Gwendeline Christie from Game of Thrones.
P. J.
Super cool art gallery. Spacious rooms with plenty of room to view each painting.
D. M.
I love modern and contemporary art, a great little space with interesting exhibitions and a nice cafe attached.
S. G.
Enormous gallery with well displayed art. Fantastic light for viewing. Been to quite a few exhibitions at this gallery. Some weirder than others! Will be back.
G. T.
One of my favourite galleries, Damien Hurst has a real eye for art. Nice to combine with Vauxhall City farm.
N. B.
I love this building, both stair wells are pure art. Ironically I've not seen much art that I like in any of the exhibitions there.
B. K.
Amazing exhibition,also very clean
J. U.
I been to the majority of the exhibitions they've put on and always enjoy it
D. T.
Brilliant place, good alternative to all the big London galleries which are very crowded and touristy, this is for people who are more serious about their art
A. P.
Good art exhibitions so far! Ideal place for Londoners, great location! South bank need this kind of places very much!
S. G.
Stunning gallery spreading across half the road.
Lots of potential for interesting exhibitions although the first is one of those ambiguous paint splatter jobs.
F. B.
Open! Not crowded. Damien Hurst retrospective on at present, so it is what you would expect .
y. v.
Very nice space and usually good exhibition. The restaurant is interesting as well ..
M. m.
out of the way gallery plenty of street parking when I visited on 28 may afternoon very nice building with great layout nice seeing some of the art from above and on the same level
S. M.
I make sure to visit every time there is a new exhibition. Very polite staff and amazing staircases.
S.
Interesting gallery. I went to watch the Gavin Turk excibition which was too "modern" for my taste, but the venue was excellent.
C. K.
Very impressive building and fascinating coffee bar called the 'Prescription' with a huge amount of pharmaceutical company and surgical exhibits.
V. D.
Fantastic gallery. Best Jeff Koons exhibition I have ever seen, did justice to his work.
E. E.
Great gallery, relatively small but always has well curated exhibitions.
C. O.
Brilliant gallery space however exhibitions can be a little bit hit or miss
G. A.
A good place to listen to art....

(Translated) good!! I wanted to visit a cafe, but I couldn't hear it. At first, I wanted to go to Yakpaeunden, but it was a cafe! ㅋㅋ The works currently on display are interesting..!! I got a little bit of a culture shock, but soon my thoughts open up...? And it was such an exhibition that you can see through your work!
(Original)
G.
(Translated) Compared to the small scale, it consisted of quite good works. There was a picture of a Korean artist!
(Original)
작은 규모에 비해 제법 알찬 작품으로 구성되어 있었음. 한국작가 그림도 있었음!

(Translated) Superb place to admire a beautiful exhibition on Richard Estes
(Original)
Superbe lieu pour admirer une très belle expo sur Richard Estes
E. R.
