Reviews of Pollocks Toy Museum
B. E.
Charming little museum steeped in history. From Victorian dolls to board games to puppets to He-Man this place has got you covered. The guys running it are also lovely. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. :)
C. K.
An absolute hidden gem, a treasure trove in London.
How did we miss this!
A stunning eclectic collection of toys from times past.
A definite must for a new generation of children learning about past childhood.
Wonderful staff, and amazing museum shop.
V. P.
Interesting little place, a bit creepy but interesting! Nice old building packed with all kinds of toys from all kinds of era.
J. T.
A unique and special place, if you want to be transported to another time or world then Pollock's toy Museum is a must! Its filled with toys from around the world all curated in to beautiful cases displayed in two very atmospheric London town houses. Its history goes all the way back to the 1850s!
K. H.
I am absolutely blown away by the beauty, whimsy and authenticity of this toy collection.
The building itself is like entering a bygone era with its creaking staircases and delightful pipework . Room upon room is crammed with cabinets of the stunning, charming and grotesque.
The toys are allowed their own voices in a culture where all too often art is dumbed down or over explained.
S. C.
Small little cozy toy museum, felt like a little gem on my discoveries. Well stocked, well maintained. Reasonably priced entry fee. They have a toy shop attached to the museum. One certainly will learn a thing or two about the history of toys. Credit cards accepted including Amex. Recommended. No guided tours that we came across. Not too busy.
N. M.
This is such an amazing shop and muse and I cannot wait to go back. In a world contact changing Potlucks is a little refuge from the past. Go there and buy things ENJOY
C. M.
Very educational, and somewhat airy.
Still very enjoyable.
H. F.
It's a very small museum with very interesting and sometimes creepy toys but I would recommend for people who are interested in dolls and toys, it was a nostalgic experience especially seeing some toys from the 80s and 90s, I had some of them when I was a kid
C. S.
Very interesting small gem in the back streets of central London. I challenge you to take a trip back in time by visiting the oldest toy museum in the UK and browse some extraordinary toys you can buy as well.
Z. J.
Really cool but can be a bit creepy if you go in when it is not busy and you go in alone. The toys collection is mesmerising abd being the old style 1700s and 1800s houses is good enough for the trip itself
P. J.
Homely and friendly. A step back in time. A place to breathe in and enjoy! For those with an imagination. Loved it.
A. K.
So much fun, so much nostalgia, a constantly surprising and wonderful place to go for any artist or with your family. Unexpected and completely magical place! Highly recommended. Pure joy :-)
C. F.
A really interesting museum full of history and curiousity. There's not many places like this so it's well worth a visit!
J. S.
A beautiful little museum. It doesn't look like much from the outside but it has several rooms over three floors. The museum focuses on toy paper theaters which became very popular in the 19th century. About a third of the museum is devoted to this and the shop offers kits so that you can build them yourself.
The rest of the museum has various toys: dolls, boardgames, laterna magica etc.
The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful when I was there. They could tell of interesting history of the building (which at one point was the last building in London with just fields to the north) and knew a lot about Pollock the toy maker as well. I had a lovely chat with them.
F.
This museum is a wonderful historical spot, with an amazing collection of toys from different era's. As a child at heart, Pollock's Toy Museum is one of my favourite historical sites when it comes to museums.
GREAT PLACE!!
D. C.
Loved this. So unique. For those who love the off beaten track stuff. Kitsch.
D. S.
It was a quaint really interesting place. Full of pop up theatres, toys and memories of bygone era. So much to see. Well worth a visit.
T. O.
This is an amazing place.Very good collection of old toys and very well displayed. . If you like toys and their history then visit once.Nice little Museum.
R. S.
Wonderful museum. Colourful as well with a wide range of history- from He-Man to the oldest known teddy bear. If you do enjoy history and toys of all kinds, this is probably somewhere you’ll enjoy!
R. L.
A unique place. One of the oddest museums I toured. Very quick to go through
Inexpensive
H. D.
A pretty interesting toy museum with a large range of toys from different time periods and also from different countries. My favourite parts were the 4000 years old ancient Egyptian mouse toy, the Indonesian puppets and the Asian dolls. I also liked the small display of Hungarian gingerbread figures.
J. “. K. R.
Quirky independent museum. Small, but a must for anyone who has an interest in odd museums, atmosphere, toys or childhood. My last visit was on 30th October, a few days before the second Covid lockdown. Expect the hours of opening to be limited if it opens after 2nd December, so call first before making a trip. Another example of a special museum that needs a little help from visitors in these troubled times. It would be a shame to see this close.
K. M.
Went looking for this to put on Instagram. Worth tracking down as part of a neighborhood walk. I didn't go inside as closed (Saturday) but a lovely shop front for photos.
B. B. (. T. W.
We tried visiting here twice over the holidays. Closed both times with no indication of what the nature of the closing was or when or if they would reopen. This is the one place my son wanted to visit in London, and sadly he left disappointed.
G. L.
An exceptional shop and toy museum see it while you can as there is sad news that it could be closing.
R. A.
A lovely little find. Really quaint old building with creaky floor boards and tiny narrow stairways, the museum is crammed with toys from all eras and from all around the world. A lovely way to spend an hour or so. Can definitely recommend it.
b.
An unusual collection of toys housed in a rather cramped old house with steep stairs and low ceilings. Won't be everyone's cup of tea and unlikely to attract many children. Of more interest to older adults who (like me) used to play with some of the exhibits. If you have an interest in toys of many kinds and from many countries, then this will be of much interest. You can complete your visit comfortably under an hour.
I. S.
Impressive collection of toys & dolls (some are quite spooky) from various countries & centuries, but mainly from Victorian times. Although the rooms are quite small and it can get crowded if visiting as a large group, it is well designed and the crowds move smoothly. There are a few steep steps to climb to the top of the museum and unfortunately there is no elevator.
The entry fee is very reasonable, considering that this museum is not receiving any other funding.
Welcoming & helpful staff.
Lovely gift shop full of fun and cool creative stuff for kids & adults.
T. Y.
The £7 entry fee is overpriced, it's not the worst museum ever but definitely feels pretty amateur. Feels like a bit of a tourist trap, but if you're interested in old toys then you might get something out of it. Expect it to take no more than 30 minutes to get through the whole place too.
A. G.
Such a gem of a museum packed with so many interesting toys!!
L. A.
Loved the house it was in as much as the toys, well worth a visit.
D. D.
Such an incredible place... There are more toys that I imagined and they are greatly looked after. Very quiet (apart from the creaking floors), it feels like a completely different world and time. The owners and dog themselves are a bit doll like :O
Great experience, well worth spending a couple of hours in there. (Or more if you have the time)
A. R.
Fascinating, playing "spot the toys I had as a child". Room full of ceramic dolls - bit creepy. Many toys & dolls thoroughly loved which added to their charm.
Not suitable for people not comfortable climbing steep & narrow flights of stairs.
A. v. C.
In many ways we're blessed to live in an age of Lego, and all sorts of other cool toys. Folks in other times had toys that can only be described as 'a bit boring'. Still, very interesting to see all of them in one place, with interesting descriptions. I particularly enjoyed the vitrine full of spaceship toys: all were made a decade or so before the first humans went into space, and therefore have unusual designs. Worth a visit, especially if you have a pal by your side to discuss it with.
P. T.
Interesting for toy lovers, but I didn't really like it
X. Z.
something hard to forget about
W. L.
This quirky little toy shop museum is awesome, it stocks and feels super old school and charming classic toys. i got my son a bear from here a few years ago which he absolutely adored (then lost recently) luckily this seems to be the only place to stock it, so i was able to replace without him realising.
J. C. S.
A small adorable museum with a toy shop downstairs, full of historic toys from many different eras. The building is also delightful, with small door frames showing its history, and the creaky floor boards bring you into the history. Helpful staff too and close to plenty of good food and drink places where you can go chat about the odd toys you found.
T. R.
This is probably one of the creepiest places I have ever been. If you're not a fan of china dolls then this could be a place of nightmares for you.
That being said they have a wide selection of classic toys and it's a good way to spend an hour or so looking at toys from the past. Even the structure of the building itself is interesting and fun to wander around.
D.
9pounds per person,it's a very information packed place, with lots of contents. Be careful going in at night, there are hundreds of creepy dolls waiting for you.
T. R.
Delightful collection of toys, dolls, models. Far more pleasant than the overcrowded British Museum. Well worth the small entry fee. £7 when I went.
D. B.
A great little journey through time when toys didn't have screens in this charming museum. They have all sorts of memorabilia that ought to spark of nostalgia. As you leave there is a gift shop where you can grab yourself a bit of the past.
K. H.
Definitely a place that I am going to be visiting a lot.
Pollock's Toy Museum is straight out of a book. Filled to the brim with Victorian toys, the museum offers plenty to look at and think upon. It's a deceptively large building, with winding stairs and room after room of treasures.
The staff are really helpful and happy to tell you about the museum and its contents so do stop to say hi.
M. W.
We visited this having seen the publicity.
The toys are on display over four floors - and the rooms are small and cramped. While there was lots of toys, they are not well displayed, and we went round this in under an hour.
If you are really interested in toys, then this may be ok for you, but as part of a family holiday by teenage son and my self had seen everything we wanted to... Little to interest us!
C. C.
A hidden gem in the city for all who love toys. This museum has a nice variety of toys through the ages, and has a small shop area for those searching for vintage toys. Note that the location is quite narrow and has a number of stairs inside.
A. M.
Amazing collection in a maze of small rooms. Some people spend hours here revisiting their childhood, other whizz through and don't really get it. I found several toys and games that I remember from my childhood (never a good sign when those things start turning up in museum collections!). Worth a visit.
V. T.
Lovely to see Independent museums. Like going into someone's house and sharing there passion. Lots of strange wee things in there... Loved the toy theatres... I did go out of my way to find the Toy Museum, more of a collection than museum, but nonetheless spent a good deal of time in here. Certainly a little Oasis of calm in hectic London. And you also got a special welcome from Haggis the doggie. Loved it... But then it was kinda Iike being at home xxx
a.
Lovely museum. Just lovely. They have toys from all around the world, along with information about them and it's great.
At the end of the visit, there's a souvenir store with vintage toys as well as modern ones.
E. h. (.
It’s a tiny museum crammed to full with toys. Toys are really everywhere - on the walls, in the cabinets, up the ceiling; mostly british ones, but I’ve found also some from Russia (and even Poland!), of all sorts - beginning with dolls (there’s one cabinet that is full of doll parts and dolls at various stages of decomposition), through trucks, board games, robots and finishing with cutouts. For such small space there’s an impressive amount of subjects gathered, but be forewarned - it’s just 5 rooms in a very crowded house, with admission fee of £6 for adults, so if toys are not your thing and you want something more interactive, there’s plenty of other attractions around (I for my part was smiling all the time, seeing these curious exhibits)
S. T.
Quaint private museum housed in the original building, course there were toys I had from my younger days, and a vast collection of others covering the gamut of playthings. £7 entry on the day I went. Worth seeking out.
M. A.
In a small house on a quiet street in Fitzrovia is a treasure trove of antique toys from all over the world. It's a real gem for toy/ history aficionados. Be warned though - there are a lot of stairs to move through the different exhibits so maybe opt for the gift shop instead of the full museum tour if you have trouble climbing.
M. D.
A rather strange museum in the heart of the West End. A very eclectic collection of toys from times past and fairly modern with an over excessive collection of dolls. Definitely worth the visit, but there are tight narrow staircases
K. R.
Great little shop, haven't tried the museum yet, but will be back. The shop assistant was really friendly and patient with my daughter, showing her the great toys on offer, and playing the amazing mechanical music box.
K. S.
Very good collection of old toys. Entrance ticket costs £6
R. G.
Amazing toy history experience..collected by one lady. While most of the Toys are from the Victorian era, there are very interesting toys from around the world over the past century or so. Meticulous planning and care has gone into preserving the toy's through out the decades.
Spread of over three levels, no one will be disappointed to understand learn about the need for entertainment needs of children well before iPads/xboxes and PlayStations.. After 5 years of walking by this place, it was great to finally have popped in for this experience.
S. R.
paid entry but a cute little museum with some interesting knick knacks, artefacts and information - the space is small but they've made the most of it. definitely worth a visit if you want a museum that's a little more alternative!
F. J.
It is a lovely and full of memories place! Some of toys record history and my childhood. I definitely recommend this special museum and their shop. I think I will visit it again.
K. W.
Best teddy bears selection, four floors of toys through the eras. Close to the Gigs Fish and chips Restaurant on the corner of Tottenham Street.
D. B.
This is an amazing place. Toy shop/museum I don't think there's any other shop like this in London. A bit over filled but everything is displayed nicely. Nice memories here, it always takes me back to my childhood.
C. C.
Fascinating look into video Victorian era toys and collectibles. The winding stairwell keeps going up to floor after floor and every inch is covered with the history of toys and games. Worth a visit.
S. D.
Pollock's isn't just a bright, overstuffed museum - it's also a toy shop that sells the kind of presents grown-ups love to give (traditional, educational, really well-made) that most children would probably sell for an iPad. Come here for gorgeous stocking fillers at bargain prices (think mini magic kits and Slinkies) or larger gifts for arty 5-13 year olds (they do amazing paper theatres you can slot together and old-fashioned mechanical toys). The museum itself is pretty small but worth a look for anyone with an especial interest in vintage toys like Victorian porcelain dolls and folky teddies.
D. H.
Definitely worth a visit! Really quirky, and atmospheric. The doll room is very sinister but you'll probably want to spend most of your time in here!
O. T.
I particularly enjoyed the vitrine full of spaceship toys: all were made a decade or so before the first humans went into space, and therefore have unusual designs.
T.
Marvellous made our day and actually rather large! That’s the way to do it!!
S.
Great little museum with toys from all around the globe. Great work done by the owners who is looking after the place for decades now.
F. A. A.
Those looking for childhood memories go to this place 😍😍😍😍😍
L. D.
A hidden gem! A museum and shop from a bygone age which still holds a special place for both young and old. Allow enough time to explore toys and paper theaters. The place is a warren of rooms full to bursting with memorabilia. Take home some real toys from your visit.
K. C.
It's a lovely little museum, went with my dad who recognised a lot of toys. The buildings the museum is lovely.
l. h.
Cute little museum with.various toys games and dolls. Stairs are quite narrow but not a major problem. Worth.a visit
D. L. H.
Huge variety of toys and the layout is unique, spanning two townhouses. A great way to pass time in Fitzrovia
A. M.
Absolutely loved the eccentric detail...bit small but was ok because we went during term time (homeschooling) so we was the only ones there...well worth it...
B. E.
Pollocks Toy Museum is still OPEN FOR BUSINESS. The address on Google Maps is also incorrect. Pollock's have been trying to get this fixed, but Google are completely uncontactable. The real address is:
1 Scala St.
London
W1T 2HL
Nearest tube is Goodge Street Station
Opening Hours: 10am-5pm Mon-Sat

Lots of fun, wonderful toys, most seems used a lot which is a sign of quality. Nice pause from modern day shopping.

Used to take my children in here a lot.
This is one of those "oddities" in London.
Really quaint and actually a lot of stuff in there.
A really good part of London, which has been there for years

M. C.

M. I.
breathtaking collection of peculiar and bizarre beauty; the most amazing museum I've ever been to.
R. M.
London from another era. Worth the visit.
S. D.
Curious to see how earlier generations used to have fun? Then visit this museum, but beware: you might freak out when you get to the dolls room.
J. K.
Painted wooden, traditional toy shop, has a small door in the back that opens up in to a parallel magical universe. Or so it should.
C. C.
Fascinating, I was surprised how much was in there!
S. C.
Lovely little gem of a place. Not suitable for people with mobility problems as situated over a range of floors with steep stairs.
N. W.
Unique place also nostalgic, back to your childhood, lovely place to introduce kids to toys of days gone bye
M. J.
Variety of different toys

(Translated) Amazing! This is the most interesting museum in London! The collection in the little house is dizzying, and the knowledgeable museum administrator grandmother told me a lot of interesting stories about these collections. Some steam locomotive toys are really powered by mini steam engines. The museum will host special events, such as thematic exhibitions with paper theater performances, and follow up on the official website. Come here, you are definitely worthwhile!

Neither the treatment was the most cordial and the store quite disappointing. Anyway, it's worth it if you're interested in antique toys.

(Translated) It is located in London. The museum presents theatrical puppets toys from the Victorian era, and next to them there are books, music boxes and other toys from that era. It is named after Benjamin Polok, who made equipment for puppet theaters at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the development of technology, puppet theaters have already started to shut down and lose their popularity, but Polok worked diligently and fought for their survival. The museum that bears his name speaks for itself, among other things.

(Translated) From my favorite places in London. It is an old toy store that is now a museum. You can find games from several centuries ago. It is a house where in every room you find all kinds of toys such as dolls, dollhouses, mini theaters, soldiers, cars, toys from various countries in Europe ... Even a little mouse from 4000 years ago. A jewel all that is inside. It is worth looking out.

(Translated) A museum that David Bowie liked so much! Very old, in some things a little creepy, but basically it's its beauty. Who would enter a place crammed with dolls if he really feared them?
(Original)

(Translated) Small museum in an old house, shows toys from various eras and cultures. Showcase of the most simple and handcrafted toys to the most sophisticated that became a dream of consumption in times past. On the ground floor there is a little store with very unusual toys, if I had won in pounds I would have bought something.

(Translated) Very interesting, the building in which it is located is particular and has an "atmosphere" but the rooms and stairs are narrow and even with a few people it moves badly. There are no signs with explanations apart from a few exceptions.

(Translated) This museum is great but it is scary! With the creaky and slanting parquet, and all these old dolls you are immersed in the universe.
(Original)
