Reviews of South London Gallery
C. C.
A nice gallery with a quaint coffee shop and outside area. The exhibition area was quite small but with interesting art. The coffee shop is a pleasant spot to stop by with lots of food and cakes available. A little pricey and service was a bit slow given the gallery wasn’t very busy at the time. The gallery also has a small gift shop with interesting books available.
M. U.
Interesting Bloomberg exhibition, free entry and a nice cafe next door. All good!
E.
Great to be back at the South London Gallery! Currently showing a fantastic exhibition.

Overall nice place and nice atmosphere. Service was a tad slow and items had to be asked for eg knife and fork multiple times. But tea cakes and tea was lovely. Enjoyable
P. H.
A gem. It has an interesting little garden designed by a famous Mexican artist. The staff must be art students. They lounge around, bored.
L. k.
Had a lovely time here!
S.
Great place for studying, reading, thinking, working or just being. Surrounded by contemporary art. There is a cafe and a garden. Very inspiring!
D. L.
Excellent space. Split over two sites approximately 50 to 100 m apart. Current exhibition, “Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2019”, could use a little more introductory information to describe what was on show. Nonetheless, I really exciting space that I look forward to revisiting.

Small yet filled with good art piece. What I love about it that it does not focus on one artist only but different ones so you’ll get yo see different types of Art works.
V. N.
A little gem hidden in Peckham. Beautifully renovated gallery and also a nice cafe next door!
L. A.
If you're in Camberwell with time to spare, this is a great place to visit. Apart from the exhibition, there's a little bookshop with lots of interesting read. I had the guided tour which finished in the Garden. Amazing space and amazing installation. It's an oasis in the middle of the city and only open for guided tours Monday to Friday. It's open to the public Saturdays and Sundays with lots of community projects running especially for young people and kids. Amazing tour of the garden by the Manager. Recommended.

My first visit to the new annex next to the fire station across the road - beautiful space with great light. The exhibition is all about humour is art so very enjoyable. The main gallery is charming with a lovely garden, cafe and shops.

Excellent Art Show - 'Supamarket' at South London Gallery FireStation Galleries 2&3
T. T.
The new annex across the road in the old fire station building and the renovated garden in the old wing are both amazing. Don't forget the cafe for a cup or nice wkend brunch.
A. C.
A great exhibition, a lovely building and a good cafe. A
Camberwell/Peckham gem.
A. n.
Lovely place to see works of art, less suffocation but welcoming
M. R.
It may not be in central London but South London Gallery on the edge of Peckham/Camberwell is a great gallery and resource. I visited to view 'The Place is Here' exhibition which closed on 10 September 2017. Great exhibition in a good space. I did not have time to time to have a meal or drink but the cafe space is gorgeous so I may return for a meal. There isn't an underground station nearby but several buses stop nearby.
Y. Y.
Go. Humour in art, elegant.
W. B.
Lovely venue, good curation of 'Knock Knock' , the narrative flowed well over the two locations.
U. H.
Nice gallery, great café also.
S. M.
One of my favourite galleries in South London
W. B.
This gallery has grown wonderfully over the years from being a curiosity to a bone fide mainstay of the London Gallery big leagues. It has overtaken the now moribund Whitechapel and sits comfortably with the same breath as the Serpentine as a destination. The cafe is superb too, my favourite breakfast spot at the moment.
C. H.
2 venues across the road from each other featuring slick interiors
V. D.
One of the few decent galleries for contemporary art in the area. Have seen some really good exhibitions here, I just wish it were more inviting.
J. C.
Nice local gallery, a bit hit and miss for me artwise, but I guess that's always going to be the case for a small gallery. Nice cafe and some good children's workshops.
D. B.
Gorgeous building but space used very poorly. Could fit so much more in than they do.
S. D.
Good coffee. Not so sure about the "art".
T.
Nice art gallery but staff was uninformed
B.
Beautiful space and always interesting exhibitions. Make sure you check out the secret garden behind.
G. J.
Good to have such a facility. Amiable staff and pleasant surroundings. The art tends to be mainly "modern". I'm probably getting old, but I found it difficult to discern which pieces were skilful.
R. K.
Beautiful space
Always interesting shows
The cafe is excellent too!
P. H.
This gallery has a nice coffee house that is well worth a visit. The gallery has some nice exhibitions as well.
O. A.
Art, food a garden and Kind attentive staff make for an enjoyable experience... They have awesome programmed events too
D. S.
My daughter exhibiting there so what's not to like!!
N. K.
Lovely little art gallery which is free. Definitely worth a visit if you're open minded and close by.
L. D.
Love this gallery space, beautiful garden out back and great bookshop! Really nice staff too, really make an effort to tell you about the artwork.
T. C.
Been to some shows hosted by art students here a few times and there's normally a great range of interesting art on show. Worth a visit if there is something on and you're nearby.
T. A.
Good but very small art space. The bookshop is surprisingly well stoked and there is a good coffee shop. here seems to be an emphasis on modern works and it gets some big names in there.
S. M.
Two venues separated by a short walk. Impressively curated for the show I saw. Lovely, well-lit space. Nice café.
D. P.
Lovely little gallery, great outdoor space and friendly staff.
B. D.
Supports local and new artists. Has not one, but two buildings. The staff is very passionate and helpful and talkative. I would suggest to anyone.
S. A. M.
Very cool selection, friendly staff, great coffee
M. A.
Not the biggest gallery or easiest to get to but if you like art then should be worth the trip
I. C.
A terrific gallery that always exhibits and eclectic mix of art.
I. M.
Great 😊 contemporary art gallery and exhibitions.
T. J.
Cute space with a nice selection of goods in the gift shop.
B. L.
This is a gem of a gallery, located on the drag between Peckham and Camberwell. It's free entry and there's also a cool additional exhibition space in the old fire station over the road. The exhibition areas are varied but great for showcasing all sorts of art. There's also a cafe on site.
L. S.
I thought the latest exhibition was vibrant and the open space was welcoming. It made a good talking point when I visited with friends.
M.
Went here with my friend. Nice art work and other project designs
P. M.
The building and internal space are amazing. Very active place worth step in when in the area
J. D.
Excellent art space with a nice selection of contemporary artists.
F. S.
Good shop and good current exhibit. Shame the cafe staff are SO LOUD it disrupted the sound of the film upstairs. This has happened several times
R. B.
I was actually impressed with most things. My son's wedding reception was delightful. The space was perfect with the garden to enjoy conversation with all guests. My one criticism was lack of lavatories. There are just not enough. At one point there was only access to one. This is not sufficient for sixty people. Such a shame as it let the venue down. Apart from that I lived it
D. B.
Superb, unusual exhibitions. Also a charity run gallery
S. P.
Nice venue showcasing mostly contemporary art. Changes all the time so check the site to see what's on.
E. C.
Excellent peices of art and really supportive of the community with their youth art programs
M. O.
A little gem in the heart of South London. Great atmosphere, very welcoming staff. Currently expanding into the Old Fire Station accross the road, so more exciting stuff to come!
C. K.
Visited to see a friends contemporary art painting on display, started in the coffees shop that has a nice vibe to it.
C. M. H.
Large open gallery spread across two beautiful buildings, free to visit (including the exhibition). Very much enjoyed the Bloomberg new contemporaries exhibition. The archive room has an interactive map with local points of interest which was a particular highlight
M. G. M.
Love it! The exhibitions are really good, the garden is a wonderful experience, the staff is friendly and helpful and the chai latte is one of the best I have tried in London. It is great place!
D. M.
Especially worth a visit when they have curated exhibitions on.
p. r.
Modern gallery in a historical building. I wish they had more exhibition space.
L. D.
A delight. It really is one of London's finest galleries without having to shout about itself. Quietly brilliant in dream like Camberwell.
M. S.
One of my favourite galleries in London, always exhibiting a great selection of works and a lovely cafe!
S. L. C. C.
A well worth visit to the Gallery on a Saturday will not disappoint you: especially look for their live art!
M. M.
Quirky exhibitions in a lovely location - fascinating selection of books etc in the small but very comprehensive shop.
Z. P.
A small but perfectly formed gallery - we really enjoyed the exhibit we saw - with a good gift/book shop and a really good cafe on the side.
W. H.
Favourite place in south east London. Great free gallery, bookshop and the cafe serves delicious food.
S. K.
Cosy and interestingly diverse programme. Definitely worth a visit if around South.
S. P. s.

R. F.
Fabulous setting for our daughter's wedding 😊
R. D.
One of Southwark's greatest cultural assets. Don't miss the eclectic Bloomberg New Contemporaries show.
E. A.
A good gallery ! The MI5 piece a few months ago was great
L. P.
Interesting diverse programme. Quality shop and and restaurant.
J. E.
Excellent gallery and performance space. I saw Irma the opera by Tom Phillips. Highly memorable.
M. F. d. A.
Can I give this place and its staff (those I had contact with, and those in the background, such as the curators) SIX stars, please?
R. G.
I loved it. I went to both sites and especially loved the archive room in the fire station site. I think it genuinely helps champion local and often unheard voices and is an inclusive space.
I loved the main exhibition I saw by Liz Johnson Artur. "If you know the beginning, the end is no trouble", which is on until Sep 1st 2019. I particularly enjoyed the fabric book, which almost had a holy book vibe because of the ritual of sitting down, the wooden spine and how it had to be slowly and methodically looked through. The recorded conversation you could listen to through the headphones was fascinatingly normal, whilst at the same time you could recognise some of the photos being spoken about, as you'd just been looking at them yourself.
The gift shop had an amazing selection of books in such a small space, as well as some lovely gifts and greetings cards.
I'd definitely come back.
a. s.
Lovely exhibition the cafe is lovely and cozy
J. S.
Its small but pleasant. Great Cafe!
C. W.
Never been disappointed by an exhibition, always thought provoking.
K. V.

Contemporary art gallery for world class events
J. K. (.
Great place for some interesting shows and a nice garden too :)
t. d.
Small, but great. Love the book store.
D. S.
A bus ride away from central, but worth a visit now and again, the art is always thought provoking, the bookshop is brilliant and it's great to see Camberwell School of Arts - the stomping ground of such greats as Humphrey Lyttelton, Mike Leigh, Tim Roth and Des'ree.
D. P.
Great free gallery. The old fire station is worth a visit
K. P. (.
This weekend I visited the South London Gallery for the first time, and I'm not sure why I waited so long to come here. The SLG is free to enter and the guys working here are helpful about explaining the exhibitions and what's going on in each room. There are several floors of art, and a cafe downstairs. I'll be back for the next exhibit!
R. N.
There was a beautiful dance /artistic performance on. The dancers were performing for 3-4 hours at a time! Good printing press, creative activities upstairs and tasty treats at the café :)
2. F.
Could do with a bit more exhibition space ( i know it's difficult to "create" space but if one can manage to have a cafe/restaurant on site...)
I. M.
Cracking gallery and venue has good cafe and gallery spaces.
F. K.
Best time simply because I got to come with my boyfriend.
N. M.
Is family place and lovely people
D. G.
Nice and quiet place to have a coffee after the exhibition
j. b.
Contemporary, free and relaxed, hosting frequent and often innovative exhibitions in a limited 'worn-in' space.
A 'hang-out' for fashionistas, hipstas and baristas.
As the visitors' revues attest ; the cafe's indubitably an important component here.
L. S.
Great art, great shop, great café

The South London Gallery, founded 1891, is a public-funded gallery of contemporary art in Camberwell, London. Until 1992, it was known as the South London Art Gallery, and nowadays the acronym SLG is often used. Margot Heller became its director in 2001.

Went last weekend for a children's art activity and then a drink/treat at the attached cafe (Cranes I think). Staff at both sections were lovely, coffee and cake were delicious and very reasonably priced, activity was really fun and free. What more could you want?
F. C.
