Reviews of The Charterhouse
T. G.
Absolutely stunning place to visit. Our guide was so informative and such a joy to be shown around. It is still lived in today and the museum at the end showing some residents in their homes was so lovely to see
R. M.
This historic set of buildings, hidden away in Clerkenwell, is definitely worth a visit.
I needed to book a timed tour for the three of us, and our middle- aged guide gave our small group a talk first about the history of the site-- a Carthusian monastery dating from about the 13th century. It's had many changes of ownership since then.
Our guide was not exactly a live-wire, but certainly knowledgeable, and we could explore all the major rooms and courtyards.
There isn't any cafe, but there are loos and a small giftshop.
As I love history, especially the Middle Ages to the Stuart period, I get a thrill here from these beautifully preserved buildings and their stories.
R. L. U.
Amazing visit, highly recommended.
I booked an hour long tour of the Charterhouse which was a great experience. It was lovely to see parts of the Charterhouse that was connected to so much history and so many important people. It was also nice to hear how the Charterhouse is still used today. Our tour guide was great, gave just the right amount of information without being overwhelming.
I also visited the chapel and museum which took about half an hour in total. Although small, the museum gave great context into the history of the charter house so highly recommend that too.
D. J. M. L.
Lovely free museum with amazing tours at 2 pm, fantastic historical pieces and well organised
B.
Fantastic history and beautiful setting in the midst of London.
T. P.
Amazing building
another little hidden gem in London
J. F.
The guided tour we went on was fascinating. We chose a tour guided by a brother - who gave us glimpses of what it is like to live here.
We have just been back (a few weeks later) for their Christmas Fair. It was very, very good - the wreaths that the staff had created from The Chaterhouse gardens were outstanding.
E. N.
Excellent guided tour. This place is a hidden gem.
F. C.
Joined a guided tour around The Charterhouse today. It is truly a hidden gem in London. If you are planning to visit St. Paul’s cathedral, then The Charterhouse is only a 15 minute walk away. Our guide was excellent ~ charming and knowledgeable. A truly enjoyable and memorable afternoon. Highly recommended.
J. F.
What a wonderful hidden jewel this place is, full of history. Visited today 28th September. The guide was superb, very knowledgeable. The tour was just over an hour and included a visit to the chapel and museum. Well worth a visit
c. c.
A really interesting tour with a knowledgeable guide, never knew it existed till got historic houses membership
D.
Please note that the review is for the Charterhouse Museum, not the actually house or tour as there were no more tours scheduled on the day we went - I will provide a separate one on my next visit.
I really want to say I like the Museum but in fact, we were in and out in less than 10 minutes; as a museum, this place is very small and has some interesting items but nothing exciting. I wouldn’t venture from other parts of London just for it so just make sure you book a tour and visit the Chapel on your trip here.
M. L.
The tours are an excellent way to view this historic site which was until very recently difficult to view. My guide was very knowledgable and had excellent presentation skills. The free museum isn't great but it's very difficult to curate a museum for a building, especially when most visitors are likely to be going on a tour of the building itself.
J. C.
We had one of the most amazing tour guides, she was funny and could answer all out questions. The tour itself was very interesting. From religious wars to the creation of national football rules. Look for Kayden on the weekends to give tours.
W. H.
Beautiful inspiring nugget in the midst of the capital. Building from 1348 (monastery, school for John Wesley, now almshouse) with chapel, museum and shop free to public. Greeted with news of an interactive archeology type hands on view with enthusiatic friendly people to explain bits dug up on site. Happening every Tuesday for couple of months. Tranquil chapel and number of nice things to buy in the shop. Only snag was the smell of delicious food (only for residents) but plethora of cafes nearby.
S. B.
A great tour with a knowledgeable guide. Lots of interesting historical facts.
C. J. K.
A place of long history and great calm
Revisited recently. Highly recommend a visit to the chapel and museum if you can't make a full tour.
C. M.
A gem of a place. Truly special. Had a tour by one of the one of the residents of the almshouse and it was wonderful — particularly loved the chapel and dining hall. While it’s not the most exciting place, it is one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in London.
A. M.
Beautiful historical place, dating back from 1348. It started as a burial site for victims of the Black Death, then as a monastery, a Tudor mansion, an almshouse and a boys’ school. The museum is small but very well displayed and the chapel is well worth a visit.
D. T.
I have been here twice and on the second occasion chose to take advantage of a guided tour as you can see a lot more of the property.
The tour guide was very well versed in both the history of the site and the general history of the Carthusians in England.
The site itself, after the dissolution of the monasteries, was used as a private residence and an almshouse before becoming the famous Charterhouse School for many years (before it moved out to Surrey). It has only been open to the public for just over a year.
This place is very much worth a visit and there are several different types of paid tours.
M. G.
Excellent guided tour and interesting museum. The cafe next door is definitely 5 stars!
H.
Nice place to visits with family and friends. Once you get in, it is so peaceful and quite, you will forgot that you are in central London. It is a perfect place to spend the afternoon. Make sure you book in advance.
E. D.
Attended a wedding today. Beautiful location, wonderfully helpful staff. Lovely food.
M. S.
Great historical buildings, definitely book onto one of their tours.
A. C. C.
Lovely little museum, super helpful staff. A hidden gem im the heart of London.
M. M.
Amazing hidden gem in the heart of London. Sooo much history. Amazing Charity work!
M. B.
A beautiful place to visit never knew this place even existed this place is so full of history to learn about.
R. M.
Wonderful hidden gem near Barbican. Book a guided tour to learn more about its fascinating history.
m. r.
Fantastic place. Steeped in history
M. R.
Incredible amount of history since 1371 spread over seven acres. Be sure to say hello to a brother if you see one!
M. W.
A microcosm of a part of East London life through the ages. Friendly and informative guide.
D. R.
Hidden Gem which witnessed so much history. Walked past dozens of times but never realised what lay within
T. G.
This area of the old city covers is steeped in history with various building covering five centuries. It is private property but there are guided tours available on their website. Tours are given by one of the brothers and they have a very wide knowledge of their subject. I would advise anyone with an interest in history to take a trip. Great value.
F. T.
Lovely place to have a quick visit when in the area. Went for Sound Unbound event
S. H.
Went on a garden tour at the Charterhouse. The gardens and buildings are beautiful and the history very interesting. The guide who took us round was excellent and a gardner came along to answer any horticultural questions. There is also a small but well thought out museum with a small shop and a nice cafe next door. A really enjoyable visit.
P. A. S.
New museum and professional tour of historic buildings make the nearly 800 years of history of this place come alive.
S. B.
Interesting old monastery with a fascinating history. Was there for an event which was well organised with interesting food.
A. D.
This historic site is a hidden classic, and was actually hidden and not open to the public for hundreds of years until recently. You can go in to the very small shop and museum anytime but a paid guided tour is very much recommended. Located just 5 minutes walk from Barbican and on Charterhouse Square, which is named after this site.
G.
Staff were really nice, the church was very quiet, a good place for reflection. Some of the floor stones are incredibly old, I found this more fascinating than the museum itself.
A. B.
Really interesting visit. Worth doing the tour. We only did the one hour one but would doing there to hour over another time. Fascinating building and story.
K. U.
Interesting building, not so interesting museum.
R. D.
A fascinating slice of mediaeval London history. Set in a picturesque private square on the edge of the city. The little museum and chapel are interesting and free to enter. If you want to see more then you need to book a tour.
B. A.
This is the most extraordinary place - a 'hidden gem' is a terrible cliche but it applies here. The tour is terrific, very informative and a fascinating insight into some stunning buildings in the heart of the City. Highly recommended.
K. Y.
Love this historical place dating back to the Tudors. As part of Open House 2019 certain areas for example The Cloisters were opened to the public. Generally, only the museum and the Chapel is open to public. They do have guided tours of the private gardens. Booking required. Please enquire with Charterhouse Precincts for details.
M. D.
So pretty, it feels like stepping outside of London into a beautiful little village.
M. K.
Interesting museum with a lot of history - Elizabeth l and Henry VIII. we only saw the museum room and the chapel - we just missed the guided tour to view the rest of the house. And it's free. Worth a visit.
M. O.
Fascinating to visit this ancient site, first plague burial ground, then monastery whose priests were executed by Henry VIII, then charterhouse School, with very well known alumni and now home to 40 pensioners who are supported by a bequest set up on the 1600's. Chapel is gorgeous. If you are passing, drop in. You will be delighted you did.
R. B.
A hidden gem. Go, it is amazing. We took 30 people, included a guided tour. All were very impressed. Cafe next door also good .relax at outside tables in the square. Hard to believe it is a stones throw from the bustle of the city andthe Barbican.
G. C.
One of my favourite things in London is how you can go from the overcrowded busy, noisy and dusty streets to suddenly be in the midst of a verdant square. Charterhouse is an example of this right around the corner from Barbican Centre (which itself has another oasis in the chaos of the City). I didn't go myself, but I am assured it is with the visit to see the Charterhouse museum. The Square also is the location of Florin Court apartments, and art deco building that wad used as the London home of Hercule Poirot TV series. If you're looking for some tranquility from the rush rush rush that is London this is a good place to seek respite.
G. D. F.
A lovely trip back in time, in this astonishingly well kept monument to past generations.
Offered great insight to it's past, while keeping active it's traditions being upkept by the Brothers of present day.
Staff were cordial and helpful.
A. B.
Fabulous location. Wonderful history. Genuine atmosphere
J. L.
Fascinating site. Charming cafe serves excellent Sunday brunch in an area where many restaurants are closed on Sunday. If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie’s Poirot you’ll see his TV home on this square.
N. T.
Very ornate and well maintained. The history of Charterhouse perfectly ties in with the Black death, Tudor history, Queen Elizabeth I, Oliver Cromwell, King Charles II, the great fire of London, the two world wars, notable poets, artists and writers and indeed Football.
I do recommend the "Brother's tour," which would cost £15; It's very interesting and informative.
C. L.
A gem! So interesting. Brother Phillip was an excellent guide. Peaceful Beautiful So full of historical connections. Good to link with St Bart's Hospital Museum and St Barts the Less and the Great
S. A.
Fascinated by the timeline of this near 650 years old house, how each period adds new life and stories to the ground where thousands of souls rested. Glad to see clips of the existing residents' day-to-day life in the almshouse, would like to learn more about their socialable life!
P. C.
Really fascinating and historical corner of London still in use. Splendid new visitor facilities, and do go on a tour as the tour guide we had was fantastic at bringing the place to life.
B. M.
To be honest it was pleasant but there was not a lot to do. I took a girl there in an an effort to impress and she appeared bored. You need to sign up for the tour otherwise if is over in 5 mins
P. H.
A hidden gem. Visits to the excellent small museum and the historic chapel are free. Very good paid for tours of the core buildings.
j. b.
A compound incorporating historical buildings of differing vintage, gardens, ‘a square’ and ‘almshouses.’
Recently opened to the public, however areas remain off-limits while others are subject to an admission fee.
Impeccable maintenance, impressive curation and authentically quirky.
Certainly warrants a diversion if hereabouts.
R. J.
I've been visiting this wonderful secret for over 32 years and I never tire of it. It really is a magical place. It is not a tourist attraction as such in that it is a working home and an abode for pensioners. But, historically speaking, it is London's only surviving Tudor town house located a stone's throw from St Paul's Cathedral. Parts of it date back to an original monastery that was established here in the late 1300's and once you've stepped inside the 21st century really does fall away and you get the distinct impression you've slipped back in time. I really can't give The Charterhouse a glowing enough review, just go there, you won't be disappointed!
One thing worth mentioning is that, if your click to read the reviews from around the web, and read about DJ's and "partying till the wee small hours" you're actually reading about a nearby bar not the actual Charterhouse itself where the pensioners, at least not to my knowledge, don't party till the wee small hours!
I. B.
Excellent museum full of interest and information, but not so much that it becomes exhausting to visit. Lovely reception area with extremely helpful staff
D. J.
Excellent guided tour by one of the Brothers who live here.
R. D.
Very nice museum and chapel! Friendly staff! Amazing history! Few tourists! You can take a tour around the premises!
T. W.
Surrounded by the beautiful buildings of a revered institution with its roots in medieval times, the well-developed gardens offer opportunities for a relaxing wander with drinks or the most amazing dining experience. Round tables for 10 diners can be set in adjacent garden 'rooms', created by the layout of flower beds and shrubs so that there is both the conviviality of the larger group coupled with the intimacy gained from separation of the tables in their individual floral environments.
E.
Very small museum just recently opened, all free! Lovely coffee shop next door. Well worth a visit, right near Barbican tube station
H. W.
London hidden gem now more accessible to the public. Great area around it, good coffee shop alongside it, Poirot's Flat in Florin Court nearby and then there's the fascinating history and interior. Do go!
B. H.
Only 2 people in the tour party, but the guide didn't hold back!,90 minutes of packed information, loved it.
M. W.
A trip back in history with one of the Brothers guiding us through it. This was Londons 'chartreuse' monastery...before Cromwell ofcourse, who is also buried a stones throw away.
P. W.
We came across the Charterhouse by accident. It's a short walk from Smithfield which has a grisly past of executions and Anabaptist martyrs. The Charterhouse is an excellent introduction to monastic life and a real insight into a forgotten slice of London's history. Well worth a visit.
J. T.
This place is a real find. So interesting. Knowledgeable guides. Historic and beautiful buildings and chapel in use. Well worth visit
H. H.
Very historic and great to walk around
P. K.
A hidden gem. I can't comment on the normal visitor experience (a guided tour, at set times) as I went with a friend to the evening service in the chapel, and then one of the residents kindly showed us around.
D. H.
If you are walking around the area, pay it a visit. Its a small place with some nice history to learn. Would not say it is worth a trip solely for the visit, though.
s. j.
Interesting but was expecting a bigger museum, chapel was good, would have liked to walk around the rest of the grounds.
N. R.
Great historic place with documents meticulously maintained. Martyrs and great men like Wesley as students. Good guidance. Worth visiting. Chapel also.
l. t.
A hidden treasure. We took the basic tour which was highly informative and enjoyable. Lovely afternoon out.

Very peaceful beautiful place tucked away in the City of London. Well worth a visit and not too difficult to find if you are willing to walk a bit.

Spent New Year's Eve at the Malmaison hotel in Charterhouse Square
Wonderful ambience, delicious food and looked after brilliantly by Emmanuel and Jason throughout our overnight stay.
Would highly recommend this hotel and the historic buildings within the square . Will definitely return very soon
Congratulations to the entire team at the hotel for making us so welcome at such a busy time of year !

T. E.
Very enjoyable and interesting visit. This trip was booked so we saw more than casual visitors
P. V.
A Must see when making the trip to London. Poirot's Art Deco home is interesting, of course, but the remainder of Charterhouse Sq is equally enthralling.
G. S.
Great building full with history in the City of London. I highly recommended a visit and the paid tour (£10) is well worth it.
M. Ć.
Someone could take better care of cleanliness of this place, but does the job to park a vehicle.

(Translated) London, as we know, is - or has been - as far removed from the care for the preservation of historic buildings that we Italians are used to. Different ages have seen upheavals of the urban fabric, without any concern for pre-existences considered not functional. Thus, you may happen to visit London several times without ever encountering small jewels rich in history such as the Charterhouse (Charterhouse). Curated exhibition, information on the centuries-old and changing presence of this institution, visit without crowding problems even during the holidays. It definitely deserves an hour or two.
