Reviews of The Courtauld Gallery
M.
A world class art gallery run by a trust.
Whilst not being the largest of galleries, it has become a favourite due to the exquisite curation, the gorgeous settings and the very tasteful, rich collection.
You could easily spend a good few hours admiring this great selection of art, spanning from Italian middle ages and Renaissance, British pastel works and French impressionism.
A gorgeous staircase dominates the settings offering great beauty spots for pictures.
The souvenir shop is a delight in itself. Located on the lower ground floor, the entrance is set between and arched fore-room. The selection of merchandise is exquisite and rather vast, the displays are perfection and the general vibe is just the right balance of relaxed sophistication.
Entry ticket is around £10 but totally worth the price.

Impressive gallery within the impressive Somerset House. The Courtauld Gallery starts right from the ground floor all the way up to the top floor (aka 3rd floor). It’s a busy place to go to, lots of people coming in and out. The cafe opposite the gallery is packed non-stop. Courtlauld’s staircase is a beautiful stairwell that leaves you astonished and leads you to the top floor where a breathtaking painting wall-to-wall is. Numerous halls with permanent and temporary exhibitions. Staff are on the snotty side; a bit blunt and rude at times but I guess they deal with masses of people daily which makes them heroes in my eyes. I visited the Van Gogh self-portraits exhibition to witness that master mind of expressionism and I was not disappointed. I’d highly recommend this gallery at any given point in time under any circumstances. Very clean facilities.

Loved the current Van Gogh exhibition! Seeing 18 self-portraits by the artist all under one roof felt truly special. Some came from Chicago, some from Amsterdam, some from Washington. Two of them were reunited after 130 years of separation! The exhibition was in two sections, his earlier portraits and those painted during his stay in France. I loved how a painting of his chair was added to the collection too, a portrait of himself, in a way. A great concept - well worth the entry fee.

Compact 3-floor gallery with paintings from pre-Renaissance all the way to the 20th century, they also host some photograph collections and precious European/Middle Eastern objects.
The staircase and Somerset House are beautiful. There is audio guide for hiring too.
L. S.
Came to see the portraits of Van Gogh. Came quite late in the day and would recommend coming then as much quieter. Portraits of Van Gogh are impressive and beautiful but left feeling not completely fulfilled. However on same floor at the Courtauld are a series of impressionists paintings some quite famous and those were lovely to see up close. Would recommend but don't expect to stay too long and DEFINITELY go see the works by Oskar Kokoschka.. Stunning!
J. K.
Absolutely wonderful gem in the hear of London. Amazing building with fantastic works of art that will blow your mind, from historical to postmodern. A must do and see.
N. S.
I spent a wonderful afternoon in this gallery, came for Van Gogh self-portrait exhibition. It was really amazing to see more than 15 of his self-portraits brought together in this exhibition.

Free for students.
Not very big but every piece of work is attractive.
I spent a lovely morning here:)

This is a wonderful little gallery in the heart of central London, within the Somerset House complex. While there are interesting exhibitions on a range of periods and styles, the main attraction is the top floor that houses some world-famous impressionist art. Manets, Renoirs, Gaugins, Van Goghs can be found here and you will not be disappointed.
M. H.
New large gallery on top floor is wonderful, so many important paintings. Overall, gallery felt slightly crowded given covid rates in London.
d. c.
Excellent refurbishment over last three years and great Van Gogh exhibit - well worth it!
R. M.
Utterly staggering and varied collection of art. Monet, Manet, Degas, Van Gogh, to name a few. So worth a visit.
J. M. P.
Wow! An extraordinary collection of paintings spanning over five hundred years - truly breathtaking. And since the very recent multi million pound renovation these treasures are housed in the most impressive surrounds. Well done Courtauld!
S. A.
Visited the first ever exhibition devoted to Van Gogh's self-portraits. Highly recommended!

I so enjoyed seeing some really famous Impressionist paintings. I'm grateful there is a lift.
Also had nice coffee in the Courtauld Cafe just opposite the Gallery entrance.
J. L.
A wonderful gallery with a stunning staircase. The Impressionism section was the best! The religious art and Italian pieces were quite amazing as well.
C. B.
I went for the Van Gogh exhibition, which was fabulous. They have some very nice Impressionist and post Impressionist pieces too. Well worth a visit.

What a beautiful picture and place to visit.

The Van Gogh is good but the Impressionist and Renaissance collections are outstanding

Love the art on display - from medieval and early Netherlandish art to post-impressionist. The newly refurbished building is wonderful. No drastic change, but a clever rearrangement of the space with a great tribute to the past when Somerset House housed the RA. The large, top room is magnificent. Cannot wait to go back to see the Van Gogh portraits exhibition.
N. G.
The top floor is the biggest attraction but don't overlook the 1st and 2nd, there are some magnificent works there. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Gauguin notebook which seemed to pass by unnoticed by most, given that nobody bothered to translate it into English!
M. S.
Not as wide of a variety of art as you would expect, particularly compared to places like the Wallace Collection, but the special exhibitions are incredible. They also do an excellent job at having frank conversations in their writing for pieces linked to colonialism, forced labour and the slave trade for example.
J. C.
It was a first rate experience. We had tickets for the Van Gogh portrait exhibition but arrived early. E
We were politely briefed that we could not enter before our time but were welcome to view the other gallerys. I was very impressed with the exhibition and the staff.
r. h.
Wonderful art collection displayed and curated very well. Some absolute gems on display from the likes of Renoir, Manet, Degas, and Van Gogh. In a delightful historic building.
C. B.
I went for the Van Gogh exhibition, which was fabulous. They have some very nice Impressionist and post Impressionist pieces too. Well worth a visit.
A. T.
Van Gogh exhibition was absolutely brilliant. The permanent exhibition is definitely worth visiting but really do go and see the Van Gogh portraits. Really moving and in so many different styles.
E. M.
So lovely to be back at the Courtland...renovations are beautifully finished with very impressive hanging and attention to detail. The new Cafe accross the courtyard was an extra highlight ...very modern and dramatic...not keen on the high stools...its an age thing!
M. C.
Recently completely restored the gallery is a beautiful space with magnificent painted ceilings and a much lighter and brighter environment in which to display the collection. Most helpful staff.
Q. Z.
Wonderful! Definitely will go again!
R. M. D. K.
What a beautiful picture and place to visit.
M. T.
Finally got to see paintings by some of the great masters. A good range of regular exhibitions to keep you coming back.
L. N.
Had a great visit to the Van Gogh portrait exhibition. Good visitor facilities including free lockers
S. R.
A fantastic building the Gallery was very well displayed allot to see and look at we were very impressed and it was worth the visit very reasonable price we had a good time Neighborhood: Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
s. s.
A renovation took 2 years but what a gallery now to view fabulous art £9 entry a must for all art lovers
j. g.
As always I love art galleries, we went to the Van Gogh portraits exhibition which was excellent.
J. P.
Enjoyed wonderful visit to the newly refurbished galleries - superb collection of impressionist and medieval art.
S. B.
Home of arguably Manet's greatest painting- The Bar at the Folies-Bergere. Recommend the coffee as well
D. C.
Gallery in general is good, Van Gogh self portrait exhibition is sensational.
N. H.
My favourite gallery anywhere.... I particularly love the Impressionist collection. Fab...
E. D.
Fantastic visit - really worth it!
B.
The Courtauld Gallery is one of the very best art galleries in London and perhaps one of the finest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist are in the world.
This is where you can find famous paintings like Van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait with bandaged ear' (1889) and Manet's 'A bar at the Folies-Bergere (1882). Two of our personal favourites are Cezanne's 'Man with Pipe' and 'The Card Players' (1882-1886), and there much more from the likes or Gauguin, Monet, Renoir and other masters of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist era.
At the Courtauld Gallery, you can also see a few works from the Medieval period as well as paintings from the Renaissance through to the 20th century. While overshadowed by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, for which the gallery is renowned, there are some very nice pieces to be seen in these collections as well.
The Courtauld Gallery also features impressive exhibitions throughout the year. See the Courtauld Gallery website for special exhibition details.
In the end, The Courtauld Gallery is a gem of a museum and place that art lovers will want to consider visiting when preparing their itineraries for trips to London.
H. L. P.
An underappreciated gem among the museums and galleries of London, the Courtauld Gallery gives you time and space to experience many iconic paintings from the Renaissance to the 20th Century, such as Bruegel the Elder's haunting Landscape with the Flight into Egypt, Manet’s enigmatic A Bar at the Folies-Bergère and Cézanne's melancholy The Card Players.
The gallery's Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection is particularly strong, but there are also plenty of other pieces of interest, as well as separate exhibitions and displays (although I was disappointed by the surfeit of Roger Fry and lack of Vanessa Bell in the Bloomsbury Art & Design display). Perfect for a leisurely Sunday afternoon.
P. D.
Lovely gallery. The Van Gogh exhibition was beautiful and inspiring
T. K.
Love the Courtauld Gallery. Looks beautiful and the service is great! Fantastic for a day out!
P. A. S.
One of my favorite collections and galleries in the world. The Old Masters and Impressionists in the Somerset House setting is wonderful. A delightful cafe for lunch.
J. M.
Excellent new layout and the Van Gogh exhibition is small but vibrant.
H. S.
For me the admissions were free as they offer free admissions to students!!!! Highly recommended if you are interested in medival art and impressionism! But to be honest if it werent free i have admit it could have been a regrettable visit.
W. C.
Excellent gallery rightly famous for its impressionist collection but lots more to see.
L. F.
Loved this gallery. Small and intamit and not busy on a Saturday afternoon. Great pieces and takes only a few hours to go through.
J. C.
Great collection of Impressionists. The gallery is now light and airy.
A. F.
Van Gogh self portraits. Unique, well curated.
J. H.
Lovely collection of Van Gogh portraits. Such an eclectic talent
Y. W.
Wonderful location (near Thames) excellent collections & friendly exhibition design. Have been there dozens of times.
D. I.
The revamped Courtauld presents the major items in their collection to good advantage.
Q. P.
Lovely place but slightly underwhelmed by the multimillion refurbishment. Feels remarkably similar.
P. A.
Breath taking collection. Omega workshop room is stunning.
H. K.
I love the Courtauld Gallery, one of my favourite places to visit
L. A.
Love it so much here, can come back week after week.
G. C.
Small gallery located just to the right side of the main entrance of Somerset House. Great collection of paintings, many of them quite famous; “A Bar at the Folies-Bergere” from Manet as well as Van Gogh’s self-portrait reside here. Main focus is on impressionist paintings. You will also find a nice/small cafe in the basement.
S. H.
My favourite gallery with some of my favourite paintings.
D. J.
Really enjoyed our afternoon here. So much brilliant art to see.
a. h.
Fabulous collection of art, particularly the 19th & early 20th centuries.
M. K.
The newly reopened gallery is joyous. Quite superb
s. t.
Outstanding and inspiring collection, particularly of impressionist painters.
A. W.
Great refurbishment and really impressive small connection
H. S.
Lovely gallery with beautiful interiors and a great collection of impressionists.
R. J. W. C.
What a lovely gallery. Amazing pieces of art on display
B. H.
Beautiful building only surpassed by the paintings inside.
Y. Y.
One of the best small galleries. Only regret is the shop. I wish it had more interesting books to peruse.
M. S.
An amazing building containing an amazing and diverse collection of art works
T. P.
A wonderful gallery inside delightful buildings
a. f.
Wonderful, especially when you manage to get a free entrance.
M. N.
A calm gallery full of unexpected riches
A. G.
Beautiful pictures and not too busy
B. C.
Some of the finest impressionist art in the world.
H. J. I.
Wonderful pocket museum with a fantastic collection and nary a crowd. While the National Portrait Gallery nearby is besieged by tourists with lines around the block, enjoy this nearby gem with a small but we'll curated collection of impressionist and post impressionist works while being nearly alone in room after room. You will feel sooooo superior to everyone else for having discovered this rare gem.
M. S.
Lovely Gallery, make sure to give it proper time, has several floors.
V. F.
Coming to this was a truly amazing experience, as this gallery contains all the best impressionist painters displayed under one roof. The creme of the crop. It allows you not only enjoy some lesser known painting from stars like Manet, Pissaro, Gauguin, Matisse, etc. but also find some new fabulous artist who are just not as known.
So far my favourite museum in London was National gallery, but now in my heart it has a really tough competition. At least in terms of intensity of emotions, Courtauld gallery has really exceeded all of my expectations.
It is a paid gallery, unlike most of the other amazing London galleries, but it's well worthed. Be sure to visit the museum before it closes down for reconstruction, as the interiors, especially the stairs, are also quite stunning and you also don't want to wait for 2 years to see this beauty.
J. E.
Lovely. The lighting is terrific. An enlightening experience.
H. P.
Clearly each exhibition has to be judged on its merits, but in my experience they’re usually pretty good. As their space for their special shows is relatively small, you don’t suffer from ‘museumitis’. Their cafe is also well worth a visit. Usually service is quick and efficient and brownies are delicious! Not that many seats so advise getting there a bit earlier than peak times. Somerset House is a stunning building and worth the visit on its own. Plus there’s often other shows and events on in one part of the building or the other. Celebrated restaurant Spring is there, but have yet to find the special occasion reason to go. Two sets of friends have been and praised it.
J. M.
Great art. Lovely location
F. S.
Iconic paintings and a lovely building
N. T.
Absolutely magnificent collection! Don't miss it.
G. B.
One of the best collections in London (only second to the Wallace collection in my opinion). The Courtauld has a great diversity of chronological curation from medieval art which is fantastically preserved and presented up to impressionist masterpieces. Student discounts are great as well as ArtFund pass holders. Take at least an hour to see the whole thing, including the drawing room.
M. A.
Went to see the Somerset House courtyard but ended up in the Courtauld Gallery. For an entry fee of £8, totally worth it! It has some renaissance and modern art collections/installments but the Impressionism and Post-Impressionism collection is the highlight of the gallery. The staff at the desk is helpful, we spoke to them about what the gallery houses before buying tickets and they were more than willing to answer questions. Students can get in for free (UK OR international, yay!) and the website is very informative if you want to plan your visit or see what temporary exhibits are on.
T. H.
Superb art gallery. Really great to visit, not so big that you can't take it all in. Nice cafe and really near public transport.
The Courtauld is best known for its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including iconic works by Manet, Degas, Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne. The displays extend into the 20th century with works by Modigliani, Matisse, Kandinsky and the Bloomsbury group, alongside masterpieces of German Expressionism and modern British art.
Entry chargrs are modest and it's pleasant to walk around as the rooms are not too big and it's very easy to take in the exhibits. Located near the South Bank, Covent Garden and the Strand it's an easy location to see other attractions in London. It's well worth a visit.
C. B.
A hidden gem in London for sure. This gallery hosts some amazing paintings and is a joy to wonder through. It is not overcrowded and you can easily see the whole collection in under 2 hours.
E. M.
Fantastic Art collection whose virtue is quality rather than quantity. Superlative impressionist works! Wonderful location! Superlative works of Rubens, Botticelli, Cranach the Elder, etc. Among things not to miss!
R. G.
Great peaces of most famous artists.
J. V.
It was ok though it was a bit disappointingthat I went out of my way to make it to their free tour on Sunday and the tour guide was so long un-enthusiastic. The curator of their special exhibition was on the contrary quite energetic and great even though she was pointing out very contemporary (thus unknown) art.
J. 7.
Wonderful gallery. We were superbly helped when visiting today by the gentleman that assists with disabled visitors. He couldn’t have been more kind, thank you for making our day! We look forward to visiting again soon.
Á. C.
Small but good museum with some impressionism jewels. I had some problems with the entrance because the person in charge didn't know that as an international student I could come in freely, as you can read on their web, so if you have some problems with it insist and don't pay the ticket entrance.
G. R.
Superb collection of the Courtauld family on display in this small gallery at the entry to Somerset House on The Strand in London. Its on the right just as you walk into the courtyard and easy to miss. But it's a real hidden gem if you like Impressionist and post-Impressionist art. This is a fabulous collection in a simple, uncrowded environment. You walk thru a series of rooms and there is one piece after another of exceptional art. In one room, there is a painting casually hung over a mantle ... a vase of flowers .. that one might expect to see in any home .. until you look at the signature and realize its a MONET! and one of several by Monet. There are several more pieces by Monet, and multiple pieces of art by Manet, Reubens, Gainesborough, etc. Just a wonderful art experience.
S. H.
Loved the current exhibit of Impressionists. It was a lovely transition from Renaissance art into modern. Only shame was the lack of air conditioning the day we went. It didn't turn me off but it was a bit of a struggle towards the end.
R. A.
It’s amazing that this tiny and yet wonderful museum is so unknown - London has a lot to offer in the art scene, granted, but Courtauld has a few gems, like a great collection of impressionists and post-impressionists, including a “copy” of Dejeuner sur l’herbe (Manet), some super cool Cezannes, and so on. I think it’s a must, and again, small place, can be seen in a couple of hours (although it deserves more)

The Courtauld Gallery is an art museum in Somerset House, on the Strand in central London. It houses the art collection of the Courtauld Institute of Art, a self-governing college of the University of London specialising in the study of the history of art.
The Courtauld collection was formed largely through donations and bequests and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and other works from medieval to modern times; it is particularly known for its French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.
In total, the collection contains some 530 paintings and over 26,000 drawings and prints. The Head of the Courtauld Gallery is Ernst Vegelin. The gallery closed on 3rd September 2018 for at least two years during a major redevelopment called Courtauld Connects.
E. H.
A gem in the middle of London. Much quieter than the National Gallery or Tate. But the quality of the paintings is outstanding. My favourite is Gauguin's Nevermore
M. S.
Brilliant place, some lovely little 15th century paintings, nice set of diptychs ant triptychs, and the piece de resistance, A Bar at the Follies Bergere. And quiet but exceptional gallery.
J. S.
Amazing paintings, especially if you like the impressionists. Some wonderful medieval paintings. Great value for money. Highly recommend a visit. Jx
A. B.
Visited using SW trains 2for1 offer so only paid £8 for 2 adults. A small gallery but a good selection of pictures from across the years with some very well know pictures on show.
M. R.
Great collection of art.
G. D.
Interesting little gallery in what I think used to be The national records office . The main building was designed by Indigo Jones are is spectacular . The only down side of the gallery is that it does get very warm inside .
K. C.
Security guerd at the doors was extremely lovely. I had to sit down for a bit and I was watching him. Opened doors to everyone! Wished Happy New Year! Was extremely polite and helpful to everyone entering and exiting. Knew the building and helped everyone with directions. Visited on 2nd January 2018.
I. P.
Very enjoyable. Not too busy but some great classic paintings. Can see it all and not get totally lost and frustrated.
M. R.
3rd floor is world class
A. V.
Charming little gallery with very nice collection.
j. k.
Lovely gallery. We enjoyed the exhibition. Lots of floors to reach but they do have a lift.
I. J.
Exceptional gallery, one of the must see in London.
The permanent collection is extremely diverse and high quality. The soutine exhibition is amazing
D. M.
Great collection, although the entry price is a bit much for the size of it. And the time I went the Van Gogh wasn’t even on display, which was one of the main reasons I went.
B. S.
Hidden gem of a gallery. I had no idea this was here until last week and the collection is a brilliant. It's so peaceful in the building too.
L. S.
Interesting enough gallery, but paintings in main exhibition areas are difficult to see because of surface reflection. First rate restaurant.
A. M.
You're better off visiting the National Gallery for free. The art is OK but the collection is small and there is nothing here that is particularly special.
B. T.
The Courtauld Gallery is awesome. The place is beautiful, with the stairs...unbelievable.
There are Manet's paintings , Degas' paintings....
R. P.
No lift?
I. C.
Is not a large gallery... But it gave me shivers!
J. A.
A great collection of Impressionist paintings, some furniture, a drawings room and a small special exhibition space on the top floor.
H. H.
Didn't realise that this gallery had such large collection of renaissance and impressionist paintings. Very impressive!

This gallery has become one of my favorite galleries in London. The gallery itself is so beautiful.
Theres a lot to see in the third floor especially, but one thing that disappointed me was putting Van Gogh’s Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear in their special exhibition with another extra fee.
But still besides that, there are great pics to see and worth visiting here!
M. W.
Strongly recommend this gallery - wonderful paintings and a manageable size. Not too crowded by London gallery standards.
S. G.
Visited the special exhibition of Van Gogh’s self portraits. The exhibition is just two rooms but the organisers have done a good job if including Van Gogh’s most iconic self portraits, as well as lesser known ones demonstrating various techniques he experimented with.
Coming to the permanent exhibits, the collection of Impressionist, and Post Impressionist paintings is great as well. They have works by Monet, Seurat, Manet, Gaugin & Cezanne, among others. This room is very popular, and gets quite crowded at times.
There are also galleries on pre modern and medieval art, but based on a quick look those are not as memorable as the collection of impressionist works.
Oh, and there’s also a nice little exhibition on photos of Kurdistan from the 1940s.

(Translated) Students enter for free! There are many works of art in London, but I really liked this place because there are many simple yet bold works! If you like impressionism, you must visit! It seems to be a less famous place than other famous art galleries and museums, but it was nice to be able to see it in a relaxed and calm manner. The interior of the museum itself is beautiful, so it's fun to look around!

(Translated) If I lived in London this museum would be one of my favorite recurring destinations. Only Manet's masterpiece "Bar alle Folies-Bergère" is worth the price of the ticket. How can you not be mesmerized by this magnificent work? But this is just the icing on the cake of a museum that offers the visitor a series of Impressionist gems and Post Impressionist, and is it possible not to mention Van Gogh's "Self-portrait with a bandaged ear"? Sublime. But that's not all. Also noteworthy are the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque paintings (Botticelli, Rubens, Parmigianino ...). And do we want to forget about the paintings on display from the twentieth century (Modigliani, Matisse, Kandinsky above all)? Not a chance! In short, here you will find a real summa of art history, put together with painstaking patience by Samuel Courtauld, a British art collector who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries. In my opinion then the extra touch of this collection is given by the beauty of the rooms of the eighteenth-century Somerset House that host it, kept in an admirable way. Here, too, great attention has been paid to the lighting of the paintings, which enhance them by putting the viewer at ease. I was also impressed by the bookshop and the publications on sale. The wealth of information contained in the catalog of the collection, for example, is truly comprehensive and denotes the author's genuine passion for art, light years away from similar publications in other museums, conceived more as a souvenir for tourists.
(Original)

(Translated) There are not many hidden treasures. Whether it is Tibetan paintings, spiral staircases, or the layout is very simple, the whole Duke's Palace building is also very good. The normal ticket is 8 pounds, and the student is free. According to time, it is roughly divided into the first floor of the Middle Ages, which is gorgeous and exquisite; the second floor is mainly Impressionist, with many masterpieces such as Van Gogh, Manet, Degas, and Shura; the third floor of Impressionism in the late and after, the color content is wild .
