A miniature masterpiece that gives a good sense of the short but happy time van Gogh spent in living London in 1873. It's free to visit but would highly recommend the paid tours run on last weekend of the month. Given by the You learn so much about how Vincent came to be a lodger with a widow and her daughter, how his formative time working in a London art dealer. You also discover the mysteries of the house itself. How an obsessive postman tracked down this as van gogh's residency in the 1970s and how the house had been restored in the past decade as a museum and centre for contemporary art.

A very well done pocket museum of Van Gogh' lodging house in London. If you want to know what an early Victorian House looked like this is a place to visit. Lots about the Van Gogh story. Much of the house is unfurnished. At the moment there is a rather good modern art exhibition in place. I really enjoyed visiting.

I really enjoyed the tour:)
The tour guide shared a lot of stories which were really interesting.
Thanks to that, I knew more about Van Gogh as well as some London histories.
Recommend people to come and join.

Very beautiful house. I went there during London Open House weekend and I loved it - the house is beautifully decorated and very well preserved with some original objects from the time van gogh lived there. I think now they use it as a gallery and a meeting place for young artists!
I recommend you go there on a sunny day and hang out in their beautiful patio.

Diana and Sonia gave an illuminating talk and tour for Black History Month on the historic background of the area and the house. Well worth the visit.

Excellent experience for London psycho- geograghers. Captures the mood and essence of the man and his time, without being a Disneyfied pastiche. Great tour guide, and useful ideas for anyone wishing to sympathetically restore a period house. Open Weds - Sun but guided tours last weekend of each month.

A wonderful blend of history and contemporary, the knowledge of the staff is extraordinary and i say that as a life long Gogh devotee! A must for anyone interested in his story which is so intwined in his work.

Initially, I would just go take a look ‘outside’...at the house/and, the historic ‘blue commemorative plaque’...which is attached onto the building; sometimes, I would even take photos, and, at all hours..including day/night...that is, if I had a camera with me.
In fact, I made it a ‘regular’ thing to, always, ride my bike straight past there...stopping, as soon as I arrived at the house, in order to experience ‘communicating’ with Van Gogh for a bit.
Plus, there is Van Gogh Walk...; where they have a little book share(take a book/leave a book).
Then, at some point, later on...I went and visited the web site...where it was possible to pay to go take a tour...seeing the actual ‘inside’ of the house...which, indeed, I did.
Right now, I’m thinking about becoming a ‘friend’...which is paid yearly membership.
——-
There is another part of me, though, that kind of wonders is it really all a bit of a hoax; by which I mean to say Van Gogh is, now, already long dead...so, it’s impossible to see/meet him in actual person; indeed, even if he were still ‘alive’...then, would he even be interested in meeting me...?!
I do think it’s good to preserve the building/and, a little bit of his own personal history of having lived here in London...(which, after all, is the city where I was born; and, therefore, do feel very proud of).
But, I also think, sometimes...both my time and my money could be far better spent elsewhere...such as going over to the galleries...and, looking at his drawings/paintings for ‘real’.
The actual house is, in fact, very small..; and, there are no actual ’original’ Van Gogh drawings/paintings being included inside there (or, at least, that I’m aware of); maybe, a few ‘reproductions’.
The money used towards this..is, basically, used to help support the ‘myth’ of Van Gogh. Sometimes, I wonder where/and, to who does all of this money go to...or, is it all being used just to ‘preserve’ the actual house itself. As a house owner myself...can fully understand that houses can be, really and truly, ‘expensive’ to keep...costing not just hundreds; but, thousands of pounds per year.
Anyway, sincerely, I wish them all the best in respecting his memory.

Worth a visit to his home and the lovely walk named after him

What a little gem. Know the area from traveling through over the past twenty years but never knew what was behind the main drag. Worth a hop and a skip.
