Reviews of Whitechapel Gallery
C. J.
Great gallery in East London, plenty of exhibitions and really well laid out - great way to spend a couple of hours before heading down Brick Lane.
Free entry!
S. W.
This was a fine art gallery. However on the day we visited, we found that the (real) art was outside the gallery - as it was such a beautiful winter day to be walking around Aldgate and Liverpool Street
l. s.
Like this place. A free exhibition today. Cafe is pleasant and cosy but a little pricey.
E.
Nice place to spend an hour or so. Calm quiet and free.
Cafe looked good but I didn't try it
N. “.
Lovely free gallery with some interesting exhibition. Nice place to visit if the weather is bad or your in the area.
K. A.
This restaurant had amazing service and the dishes were rich and flavorful. Highly recommend!

I love this gallery. One of my favourite places in London. Fantastically curated and beautifully designed. The only problem are description notes which are too low for average viewer and make reading quite awkward. But that's just one thing in the sea of greatness.
C. R.
Amazing gallery! Eileen agar exhibition is superlative! Totally recommended
R. A.
Great gallery very close to Aldgate East tube station. Saw the excellent Eileen Agar exhibition
G. J.
"Modern" art gallery in that it is hard to tell whether an exhibit is any good. Some very talented and some very odd stuff on display. Take for example a shelf of broken crockery, which you can alter and add to, "by" Yoko Ono. Also someone has placed a pile of bricks. Wish I'd thought of it and sold it. An unusual experience. Good facilities, staff and cafe.
L. A.
Been meaning to visit for years. But was short of time. Expected a buzzy vibrant place, but felt it was rather flat and tired. must go again and give it more time and hopefully a better review
R. C.
We went around the free exhibits and liked what we saw. Was a little confusing with the 1a, b & c galleries.
S. B.
Lovely exhibit of Theaster Gates!!
Beautiful gallery!
A. W.
Excellent visit, as I went there 55 years ago approximately with My Mum,
and we Looked at about 20/30 Sixties Designer Chairs 💺
They've stuck in My mind forever,

Reservations are required during the epidemic.
I can’t understand a lot of it, I think some of my artworks can also be displayed.
A. Y.
I stopped into the Whitechapel gallery whilst waiting for a friend. The space is very carefully curated & takes advantage of some unique angles. I really liked the use of negative space to compliment the artwork on display. The bookshop is great as well!
Bonus feature: Big fan of the staircase design, which let's in a lot of natural skylight.
N. K.
Having lovely pampered moments here 🙌
M. D.
Museum level gallery. I love that it combines old and modern spaces from exposed brick to pure white walls, to magnificent works of art from relevant artists. Plus, an amazing library with spectacular titles! Also, the staff are super friendly and helpful—a unique experience and a MUST for anyone who enjoys art.

The Whitechapel Gallery is a public art gallery in Whitechapel on the north side of Whitechapel High Street, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, it was opened in 1901 as one of the first publicly funded galleries for temporary exhibitions in London, and it has a long track record for education and outreach projects, focused on local people. It exhibits the work of contemporary artists, as well as organising retrospective exhibitions and shows that are of interest to the local community.
A. H. G.
Very good for a small art gallery at an area you wouldn't expect to visit one. A mix of art displays, some more on the contemporary side and more difficult to process. Each room had a different display so you're guaranteed that at lest one or two will be to your taste.
L. S.
I have been here visiting a clay and pottery art exhibition. The gallery is free and there are many floors and big spaces to visit. Well organized.
J. B. S.
The free area was a bit small but pieces are cute
M. O.
Very quaint but fulfilling experience. The gallery was very clean, temperatures were taken open entry and crowd control in all the rooms made me feel safe. The little cade and a apor to sit and read or reflect made it a very good experience
W. A.
A well known gallery in London that has a history going back to the early 20th century. Modern contemporary works by famous artists and photographers have had exhibitions here. Across several levels the rooms are well lit and the works are well displayed. There is a cloak room, coffee shop which also has great lunches available as well as a gift shop.
P. D.
Found it very intriguing, and the art work was amazing and had hidden art inside the painting but had to look hard to spot them, so it kept it us busy for the duration of the visit. Would definitely visit again.
S. B.
We had a good experience where the creative director herself gave us a tour of the gallery and the artist's work.
g. c.
Great experience, enjoyed the Yoko Ono visit and a nice shop at the end. The space flowed very well and was free!
L. R. F.
Small and cozy art gallery. Cute idea to make your own art piece in the Yoko Ono section. ☺️
P. S.
Always amazed how this gallery brings a fresh and often visionary view on art and society. The building and it's layout have something intimistic.
Definitely worth to add to your todo list on your next stop in London
J. R.
Started with a lovely exceptionally tasty lunch at the newly refurbished and open Townsend restaurant in the gallery foyer. Then went to view the Painting in the new Millenium: Radical Figures exhibition. Particularly enjoyed work by Daniel Richter - amazing use of colour. 'Tarifa' (2001) was emotionally moving. Menacing seas. Lord Michael Armitage's video on his use of tree bark to paint on; Nicole Eisenman's Brooklyn Biergarten was mesmerising in its detail. Tschabala Self' a assemblages and applique were full of energy and powerful. A great trip. Would recommend the gallery and this exhibition.
P. K.
Love going here. Another great venue with free and ticketed displays. Always great exhibitions. Will come again and again.
Also worth mentioning the bookshop is worth scheduling some extra time for browsing, bought many Christmas presents there and will come again.
M. M.
Quite a small art gallery, I only visited the free sections. Several galleries display video art, and there is a room dedicated to the artist "Jackson Pollock" and his painting "Summertime": looks like someone's gone a bit wild with slap on paint, but who am I to judge, that's contemporary art for you.
E. C.
The gallery always has some free areas where you can see some quirky contemporary art. Have seen some gems and some not so good shows. Always worth a visit though and the bonus of an excellent, well stocked art bookshop on sight.
H. C.
Great exhibitions one if which I could take part in. Also a very tasty lunch in the restaurant.
C. C.
This is not a big gallery but always has interesting exhibitions on. Also it's not very touristy so you can take your time viewing. Ideal to have a day out here then head to brick lane market. There is a museum cafe inside as well if you a place to rest a bit.
D. J. M. L.
Small cute gallery with interesting modern photos and installations. It is free but you have to pay for some special exhibits
R. C.
Love Whitechapel Art Gallery - having previously lived in the East end of London I used to go regularly for many many years - and even though I no longer live in the vicinity I still try to make regular visits - such a wonderful gallery and often wonderful exhibitions - far more interesting than the always "big" name ticket selling artists that seem to only be shown at Tate Modern these days. Just went to see the Eileen Agar exhibition - was a "little" aware of some of her work , namely through my interest in other artists that she associated with - so was keen to learn more about her. So glad I went - great exhibition - and a great and insightful introduction to her life and works.
Thoroughly recommend it. Whitechapel Art gallery also has a fab little art book shop.
E. S.
Interesting eclectic shows and a profound connection to the local area too. Saw a fascinating exhibition of old American Dustbowl photos the other day, then found myself in a gallery exploring the silencing if working class women. I love this place.
C. M.
One of my favourite galleries in London. Actually, even its name is 'Whitechapel' it is just above Aldgate East tube station.
Exhibition is unique and hit and miss, but always unique to me. I wish they could keep the fee low so anyone can casually enjoy the show but it gets slightly more expensive than it used to be.
But it is not too large space (2 floors and very spacy but never been overwhelmed with the size of exhibitions).
It has a cafe/restaurant as well, which is nice.
If you walk from Whitechapel, it still takes 5-7 mins.
I do not know if the entrance is wheelchair friendly (entrance has several steps) but it has an elevator inside to reach to the 1st floor.
v. d.
Great exhibition spaces with excellent artist work. Very friendly staff...I would definitely go back there to see future exhibitions.
A. F.
Wonderous gallery with spot on and affective exhibitions. They seem to challenge themselves and the viewer often and in a refreshing amout.
I always pop by when im in town and encourage artists and art enthusiasts to do the same.
K. c.
Not alot of exhibitions but its okay if you have 10mins to spare
O.
Smaller than expected but a good place to stop if you have 30 mins to spare
J. B.
Like all venues these days, includes temperature check, masking wearing experience but the art makes it worthwhile.
E. R.
I think due to covid restrictions the route was a bit confusing and ended abruptly, but the exhibitions were very good and how the artwork was displayed is quite quirky in places. You have to look everywhere to see it all. Very helpful staff. Well worth a visit.
D. T.
Excellent gallery. Cafe and shop
M. H.
Good food and service pricey for small portions but so handy so will go again
D.
Always interesting and often unusual modern art exhibitions, mostly painting and some installation
D. B.
Good art gallery that hosts very nice exhibitions. Has a great bookshop and a first rate restaurant. Coffee shop next door is also a good place for coffee and lunch.
F. B.
I enjoyed the free display - booked online this Thursday but was able to book just before visit- then stayed and bought ticket for the painting show. A relaxing visit with measures in place that made it feel safe and comfortable under current circumstances. Lovely staff. The painting show wasn't to my personal taste but enjoyed the room about their process and then a conversation with an invigilator really brought out interest in what I was looking at (thank you to the man who talked about the Moseley paintings). A really nice first gallery visit post lock down.
C. H.
So good to be able to go to this gallery again. One of London's must visit spaces.
D. R.
Beautiful building and exteriors. Filled with great art and maintained some interesting conceptual projects despite the lockdown.
M. H.
It's fantastic place to visit and for who like different culture, books and history. I couldn't get inside but heard from friends about it and they really like the place. Very clean and well manage with good collection.
Its worth to spend time
I. P.
great space for creative art + you can buy some cool limited series pieces to collect!
A. e.
Always love the art exhibitions there, great space and place. Cloakroom and Café too.
J.
Fantastic gallery with very interesting and well planned exhibition's, informative and visually impressive.
F. E.
Brilliant place. Totally wonderful. Great cafe too.
s.
Appreciated it having a free section as well as the payed area, was disappointed with the availability of the art pieces
S. G. -. F. M.
What can I say, art is subjective. Some of it was appealing, some of it not so much. But that's a personal opinion, so you should go along and decide for yourself.
C.
A lovely exhibit and beautiful gallery for all ages.
M. D.
Just shows where modern art is going. Some works I saw on the wall were puerile, meaningless and downright ridiculous. Have added pics...
P. R.
Not a brilliant choice in the restaurant but the duck was good
J. S.
Fantastic contemporary gallery with a great selection in the book shop
G. H.
Excellent. Large areas for exhibiting and a variety of ideas and activities
Looking forward to going again 😀
R. R.
It was interesting for sure, a little avant garde for my wife's taste. She described the Nalini Malani exhibition as seeing inside the mind of a schizophrenic. I however found something of interest throughout all the exhibits. The main drawback is the gallery's size so the visit was over far sooner than I would've liked but not much they can do about that, there are other exhibitions you can pay to see but we only took the free entry so can't complain much.
H.
Their exhibitions are super good to see as free! Free lockers and coats room :)
C. B.
It was a great exhibition..the written explanations were rather low and in small print. This necessitated taking glasses on and off and bending...otherwise I loved it!!!
M. H.
Friendly gallery with interesting free exhibitions and some paid. The new Anna Maria Maiolino is worth seeing.
D. C. S.
Occasionally there are some exhibitions worth going to see. Regardless, this is a nice gallery space.
M. M.
Very interesting and nice gallery in Whitechapel. No tourists in this area
L. D.
Saw the Eileen Ager exhibition, which was well organised and thoughtfully laid out. The Whitechapel has a rather dated feel to it, which adds to the charm and counter balances the super hip neighbourhood it's housed in.
M. F.
It’s great because it’s free :) good offers on books in the store downstairs too. Good local gallery.
R. I.
Always a wonderful place to visit, irrespective of the exhibition. Always brilliantly curated and displayed. Love it.
C. M.
Has always been a great gallery with lots io nteresting stuff going on Their covid response is very reassuring and I had no hesitation in visiting. Temperature taken on arrival, face masks worn by everyone including staff, limits on amount of people in each room etc. Very impressed.Great mixed exhibitors on at the moment with something for everyone
T. S.
Whitechapel is a contemplative gallery, there's always something thought provoking in the free spaces if you don't want to pay for the main exhibition. The work can be challenging but delivered in a calm space. The audio-visual viewing room never disappoints. The collections are always refreshingly curated, with a cool shop and cafe thrown in.
C. C.
Very well curated contemporary art shows, very nice space/building and a bookshop with a good selection of books and postcards!
C. R.
Extremely quirky and variable constantly changing exhibits. Always worth checking out but not always worth the time in my experience. Of course as always different strokes for different folks and I can't fault anything I have seen there for artistic vision and true effort fulfilled.
J. C. M.
A good exhibition and events programme plus a finely selected art bookstore.
K.
It’s a smaller gallery with a nice selection of art.
D. B.
Dedicated staff, welcoming atmosphere, top class art.
D. M.
A really lovely building both inside and out.
On the day we visited there were very few exhibits that caught our attention and it did feel a bit like they were between exhibitions with some spaces empty. Worth a visit and I'm sure it would be great on another day.
h. p.
Another excellent show. So well set out.
Really enjoyed it.
c. m.
Nice gallery, some very interesting well laid out exhibitions in here from artists you wouldn't normally get the opportunity to see. Not too busy I visited on a Sunday afternoon and didn't have to fight to look at the art. Book shop is very well stocked and there is a nice cafe for coffee and bites to eat once you are finished.
R. I.
Really surprising diamond in whitechapel, full of nice employ and contemporary art! Iwill be there more often! ❤️
E. O.
The outside of the gallery was more impressive than the exhibits inside, look up when you are standing outside it is beautiful. The gallery itself features different modern exhibitions throughout the year and we happened to choose a time when nothing seemed to capture our attention.
p. a.
Lovely Gallery very welcoming and friendly staff. Me and my daughter had a wonderful time together visiting this place
P. M.
Excellent gallery with some exciting exhibitions
L. J.
This is a truly inspiring place with a mix of culture and creative vibes. A lovely little gallery in the heart of London, well worth a quick visit when in Shoreditch. We spent about an hour here. There is a shop, cafe and toilet facilities.
P. B.
An incredible gallery that after a long history of bringing challenging fine art to East London still pushes boundaries. Great range of exhibitions all the time, fascinating stuff in the gift shop and a solid cafe.
K. P.
If you're already somewhere around bricklane and need a little bathroom break, check out some arts too!
I've been there twice, both times only gone trough the free exhibitions, and it's been totally worth the journey, the exhibitions have been visually appealing and interesting, the staff is great and friendly. A very old school gallery compared to the the big modern ones.
D. M.
For decades Whitechapel Gallery have been showing fantastic exhibitions of thought provoking contemporary art. They've broadened my horizons, and for that I'm grateful. On top of that, they show some interesting video screenings, and have a nice cafe/bar too! Buy a membership to bring a guest. Well worth it if you'll visit more than a couple times a year.
A. T. E. E.
Great place to visit during the weekend with the family. I visited the gallery with the family before the lockdown. The staff were very polite and very experienced, you can tell the staff love their jobs. Will visit the gallery once again after the lockdown.
B. C.
I do like coming here at times, sometimes there are a few gems of a show, but I find the main exhibitions rather expensive and usually lack that wow factor. But still it's a nice building, cafe is okay, staff can be a bit grumpy, not very welcoming. Hit and miss of a place, need to read up first to see if its worth the effort. Find the Leyden Gallery, which is nearby, now that's certainly worth a visit, it's free and usually hosts some exciting works.
f. s.
I really liked the use of negative space to compliment the artwork on display. The bookshop is great as well!
Bonus feature: Big fan of the staircase design, which let's in a lot of natural skylight.
K. G.
Lovely staff and great exhibitions - both free and very affordable prices.
C. L.
A lovely local gallery showcasing international & local artwork.
It offers both free & admission fee exhibitions, pleasant cafe & an interesting and well- stocked bookshop.
Clean, airy & easily accessible by transport links.
Somewhat slightly confusing layout, but a pleasant place to spend an hour or so.......
R. L.
Excellent contemporary gallery with large space ideal for art display. Exhibitions change. I've been to some that are disappointing but the better ones are absolutely superb; stimulating and inspiring. I guess to be challenging and interesting, contemporary galleries will risk the occasional exhibition that doesn't engage all but hurrah for galleries prepared to take the risk
J.
A favourite for last 30 years
C. R.
Extremely quirky and variable constantly changing exhibits. Always worth checking out but not always worth the time in my experience. Of course as always different strokes for different folks and I can't fault anything I have seen there for artistic vision and true effort fulfilled.
C. G.
11/10 good space friendly help desk sweet art
M. N.
Cool and interesting gallery!
K. S.
Eileen Agar female surrealist, a must see exhibition.
A. C. C.
Cozy and really interesting art curation
J. E.
One of the best figurative paintings exhibtion i have seen in years.
More exhibtions like that please - it made me became one of the WCH gallery memebers.
Well done!
Z. S.
Very cool, free entry
O.
Beautiful and well curated gallery. The whole experience was enjoyable to say for me.
M. L.
Another one of London’s awesome free galleries to check out contemporary art. Right above the Whitechapel station.
S. s.
A lovely building and gallery space in a vibrant part of London. Hopefully, we’ll be able to visit again next year when life gets back to normal.
J. G.
Really enjoyed my (brief) visit, and the place is straightforward to access (via steps) from the tube. Maybe there's a lift from the tube too, though I saw no signs for one. I only spent about 15mins at the gallery as I was due elsewhere. Went to the shop and a free exhibition space.
M. L.
Another one of London’s awesome free galleries to check out contemporary art. Right above the Whitechapel station.
S. S.
Whitechapel Gallery never lets me down! There are always great collections!
D. A.
Visited this small but interesting gallery while staying in the area recently. I didn't have a lot of time so didn't get to see the Elmsted & Dragsted exhibits which sounded interesting, if a little pricey. The 'surreal science' was the highlight for me but I enjoyed the whole tour. I can recommend this gallery without reservation. It is adjacent to Aldgate East tube station so easy to get to. It doesn't open until 11am, but there was an excellent café. Also adjacent to bricklane, strongly recommend a visit there if you have time as lots to see. You won't be disappointed.
s.
I love this gallery, and come here often. OK, it’s right next to the tube station, and they have toilets….. But while I’m here, I’ll have a look around, and the conceptual installation art they exhibit does make me think. Unfortunately I don’t know much, so can’t think for very long, but I do have questions:
Can I take one of those magazines, or would that be vandalism?
Are the people looking at that pile of magazines, thinking intellectual thoughts, or are they thinking what I’m thinking?
Do artists create these installations because they’ve risen above more traditional art forms, or is it because they’re not very good at drawing cats?
Was I supposed to buy a ticket for this bit, and come in through a different door?
They have a good bookshop, so maybe I’ll buy some of those books and hopefully get some answers.
And if you’re here for the first time, and come to what feels like an out-of-bounds staircase, or a forgotten corridor between cupboards, keep going, there’s more to see.
S. D.
This is a beautiful, unique space and one I'd highly recommend visiting. The last exhibition I saw was the Max Mara Women's Art Prize and I felt that the space had been curated very skillfully and considerately on the film piece in the centre of the room. I'm not ashamed to admit that my favourite thing about this gallery is the magnificent book shop; I could happily spend hours in it.
S. H.
An excellent contemporary gallery that not only exhibits new and developing artists but reflects the gallery in its own place in East London, at the heart of its community.
p. t.
The gallery is Worth the trip across London if you like modern art. I found that I lost myself in the gallery for about an hour just wondering. When I visited the gallery was not busy so never felt that I had to rush. There is also a lovely coffee shop across the road called Aldgate coffee house
V. T.
They have a terrific Jackson Pollock in the permanent collection and the place is just nice to walk through. The cafe is a relaxing place off a busy road to kill a little time if like me you were waiting for a Jack the Ripper walking tour to start at Aldgate East tube station. The museum has a lot of history and avant garde bona fides. Stumbled upon this when travelling elsewhere as it’s next to Aldgate East tube station and thought I’d look in. Good exhibition. Although, I wasn’t blown away, with free admission I can’t complain as it was still a good experience. Fantastic book shop too- certainly the star of the show and all very well priced.
p.
Nice contemporary art, free of charge so definitely worth a visit while at bricklane
M. E.
Very interesting exhibition at the beginning of March 2018. Fabulous what you are doing with schools. Being partially sighted I found the gallery itself a bit challenging. Could do with more direction in order to find all of the gallery rooms.
m. l.
Great gallery, great location and liked by many including myself. I can't shake the feeling that it's trying too hard tho.... it's airy..... arty...... and yet slightly over it, even though I do appreciate the enormous efforts being put in to make this in to a world class gallery ( which it is) perhaps I'm too old school Spitalfields | Shoreditch. Go and find out for yourselves- great part of London, easy to get to and worth a visit.
C. L.
Enjoying the art galleries is a good way to ignore all everyday problems ever for a while. I like Whitechapel Gallery and its pleasant atmosphere that makes me feel relaxed. The exhibition are always so inspiring. Nice place with a good location.
J. E.
One of the best figurative paintings exhibtion i have seen in years.
More exhibtions like that please - it made me became one of the WCH gallery memebers. …
T. P.
Beautiful little gallery tucked away in Whitechapel. Somehow for the life of me, I couldn’t never figure out the opening times, but it turned out to be an awesome walk in surprise everytime I did get in there.
Gripping and moving exhibitions all year round. Something you have to try at least once.
G.
An amazing contemporary art gallery in East London, the best one in that area. Many exhibitions always on at the same time, changing every three/four months. Lots of events, projections, courses and conferences as well. Especially lively on a Thursday night, when it's open late (until 9pm).
P. M.
Great gallery. Mix of free and pay shows through the year, check the website.
W. R.
Take this review with a pinch of salt. I'm not a fan of conceptual art. If you like conceptual art you'll love this gallery. I had heard that the Whitechapel Art Gallery were displaying previously unexhibited works from the civil service collection. Obviously that was only a temporary arrangement. There is nothing there more than 50-60 years old. There is a lot of multi-media and mixed-media work, over two floors, plenty to discover in a small premises. Cafe and gift shop.
S. F.
Open all year round and close to the Aldgate station, there's always something interesting to see. The gallery has hosted expositions of classicists and contemporary artists in keeping with the vibrant cultural tradition of London. There are free and paid exhibitions and projects, very well curated, making maximum use of the space. The bookshop is also a lovely place to browse and buy books, fancy magazines, or gifts. Staff are very knowledgeable and willing to inform.
P. B.
Wonderful Gallery showing major works from interesting and alternative artists from around the world. Also runs a excellent film programme. Gallery has great links with the local community, which includes running education workshops with schools in the area.
C. K.
Pros: always have good shows. Free Walk in available. Events are super nice too!
Cons: Expensive shows as oppose to many free exhibitions in London. If show is good like Benidict Drews or Mark Dion then its worth paying for that extra exhibition. If not its really waste of money. Always look at reviews before going/paying.
K. K.
I've been there numerous times and although the exhibitions can vary from average to great. I'd recommend it, I think it's pretty much always free. The bookshop is pretty fantastic.
M. W.
Lovely local gallery with a wonderful cafe, the Refectory.
S. G.
Fantastic contemporary art venue based across a few floors with brilliant book shop and cafe. About half a dozen rooms and areas usually mixing paid and free exhibitions. Make sure you pop in soon!
s. a.
Interesting gallery and building rooted in local area. Several spaces so not just one theme. Worth a visit 90 mins/2 hours
S. D.
Beautiful gallery; it's free to see the ongoing displays of local history but you'll pay a reasonable tenner for their well-curated exhibitions such as Hannah Hoch, a brilliant take on collage and Dada. The bookshop is really great and full of unusual mags as well as arty books and gifts.
P. W.
I went to see the Dust exhibition which is thought provoking meditation on photography and art. However Trickle Down Theory exhibition is a must see and terrific. Do not miss Rodins Thinker re- imagined with the head of a goat. The cafe is as good as the art.
S. E.
Typical big city art gallery, of which London has many notables and of which this is one. Everything you'd expect is here. Great space to exhibit for artists. You should go if they are showing something you want to see, rather than just pop in.
E. W.
The gallery space itself was fine, exhibition was okay. My only complaint is that I was followed awkwardly almost the whole time by a staff member. I even tested my theory by repeating routes and following certain patterns. I'm not sure if they thought I was going to ruin any of the pieces (I wasn't standing very close, nor did I carry a large bag) or try to steal something? It was weird, super annoying, and ruined the experience for me.
B. M.
intreging mix of contemporary art exhits, not all to my taste but nonetheless an overall interesting collection. free to enter and well worth visiting and maybe leave a donation on leaving to help it continue to provide such future events.
S. C.
The Whitechapel Gallery is a really interesting space. Currently they have an extremely interesting, interactive exhibition called The Spirit Of Utopia.
They are extremely welcoming and always have informative and fun talks and projects that you can get involved in.
All the exhibitions are free so it's well worth taking a trip to see what you will find.
C. Y.
The space is huge but they could use it more efficiently with the arrangements. The temperature is various between different galleries. You have to adapt yourself to some very chilly ones.
S. L.
Interesting buildings and interesting exhibitions, good overground, tube and bus connections. Many exhibitions are free if not you currently pay £12.95 or £9.59 concession.
S. K.
Cool contemporary art with regularly changing exhibitions
A. F.
A great institution which has acted as a trailblazer in East London and London in general. Always have well curated shows, a strong bookshop and good limited editions. They organise great events for patrons as well.
M. S. R.
Thought Sussman's Algorithmicnoir and the Once Heard Before pieces were great! Certainly got me thinking about influences of computer algorithms, their function in relation to control & copyright some more. Bookshop good too.
B. B.
1st class showcase for contemporary art. Handy from Liverpool St station too.
J. A.
Great gallery with some interesting exhibitions on, and a decent book shop on site. There's also a café serving food, staff are helpful.
Worth checking the website to see what's on as not all exhibitions are free.
G. A.
It worths the visit. It has one open gallery where you can access for free and there are another one with seasonal expositions where you have to pay. It's a nice place, the hostess is nice and very helpful. I just expected it to be bigger.
M. M.
A lovely gallery at the edge of the City of London. The art nouveau façade is particularly gorgeous. I think that exhibitions are usually free. I went there to see the works of french filmmaker Chris Marker, which was well curated, including the projection of many short films, and other video installations.
W. L.
Relatively small gallery with rotating contemporary art exhibitions. While generally not my cup of tea there was an installation of a small booth for two people to converse in. Being a group of general awkward people it was amusing, if a bit panic inducing.
G. W.
Really enjoy this space. Plenty of local places to eat and drink too
R. C. H.
A fantastic venue for usually avant-garde modern art. Beautifully restored classical building with gorgeous, fine and smart cafe up front, most out of keeping with the run-down area. Small but well curated for the size and status.
Note the building was designed by the architect who designed the Horniman Museum in Forrest Hill.
P. L.
Great gallery , beautiful building and fabulous exhibitions selection!
Visited the amazing exhibitions of Collection of Contemporary Art and Sophia Al-Maria.
Highly recommended.

I was at the Whitechapel Gallery last week on a really important business meeting and I have to say that I was very happy. The waitress was really polite, she served us promptly and the food was good. I had scrambled eggs with bacon and it was nice.
J. O.
I think that this gallery is very good, because it depicts a number of exhibitions that foretell the past. An installment of an audio piece has been at the gallery for 20 years, that is by Janet Cardiff, who is a Canadian artist, and gives the chance for those who are interested to walk the streets of Whitechapel with an audio guide. This lasts for 1 hour. Whitechapel gallery is a 2 second walk from the Whitechapel station.
S. S.
Beautiful place with lots of character and unique overall feel. I've been here so many times and whoever I take with me, they're always left impressed and stunned by the exhibitions. I'd recommend it highly.
A. T. K.
I liked the vibe. The staff were helpful, but can be more passionate 😊
J. W.
The free exhibitions are often pretty abstract and certainly modern. Can be difficult to get your head around and sometimes a bit patchy, but great that it exists. Has cafe and toilets too.
K. 1.
The Whitechapel Gallery is a public art gallery in Aldgate on the north side of Whitechapel High Street, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London and Central London.
N. R.
Huge gallery with a varied programme shows and exhibitions that can big names or new emerging artists. Hreat way to spend a few hours if art is your thing.
M. B.
What a gem!
The Whitechapel Gallery dining room has a menu full of freshly prepared European style meat/fish dishes (try the small tapas-y bites) plus wines by the glass, caraf or bottle.
Decorated with retro contemporary lighting, staff were friendly and attentive. Not many tables but you could probably get away without booking...
A. B.
Great exhibition of Thomas Ruff photos, well curated and enough space to do it justice, but not overwhelming. Friendly staff and interesting building. Good shop too.
J. B.
Small gallery, good for a quick 20 minute walk around. Had some very conceptual stuff when I visited, which went straight over my head. Clean well maintained too, with a nice café
O.
Beautiful and well curated gallery. The whole experience was enjoyable to say for me.
A. S.
Whitechapel Art Gallery is a little off the beaten track, but it’s very easy to find and worth a visit if contemporary art is your bag. I dropped by for the Rothko in Britain exhibition (here until Feb 2012) which was pretty impressive considering it’s free. The very friendly receptionist also pointed out that there are several other floors that I was welcome to look at, which I did. Particularly enjoyed the Government Art Collection but The Bloomberg Commission was a bit too spacey for me. This definitely isn’t the gallery to take young children to on a rainy day. They’d hate you for it. But if you have 45 minutes spare and you’ve already done London’s major galleries, then this is a wonderful alternative.
A. K.
Beautiful gallery but always a bit disappointed by the exhibitions. Great bookshop - art/design books and gifts. They have a cafe but I haven't tried it.
M. C.
Great Thomas Ruff exhibition. Enthusiastic informative staff. Ideal venue for display. This exhibition was brilliantly curated. Well placed, coherent siting of exhibits showing everything of to the max. Amazing
P. L.
Easily the best restaurant in Whitechapel/Aldgate. It's cosy with only around 13 tables, so I'd recommend booking, but I did this easily on the day without a problem. The menu changes daily to reflect season produce, and all the dishes I tried were fresh and delicious. My only criticism is that the toilet bins were overflowing, but as they share these with the Whitechapel Gallery, I guess they can't take the blame. I'll definitely be back.
V. M. V.
Wonderful space for contemporary art. Perfect visit if you walk up brick lane round the corner afterwards for a pint or a Bengal dinner.
L. W.
Nice free gallery!
s. w.
Excellent gallery space. The cafe is a little expensive but the food is good. The bookshop is one of the best for art and philosophy books in London.
E. Y.
Cutting edgy, avant-garde, thought-provoking, multimedia, free contemporary exhibitions and events throughout a year. Always worth a visit. Bookshop stocks good selection.
S. G.
Very intriguing and fresh views of the modern world. Bold colours and lots of relatable concepts that have been cleverly portrayed.
C. G.
11/10 good space friendly help desk sweet art
E. R.
Well with a visit. Great Open Exhibition. Should be seen by anyone interested in what’s happening now.
By the way great little cafe.
Staff very helpful
F. I.
Unluckily, it was the moment of seasonal renew of exhibitions, so I could only see few things. I took the tour for free, but it wasn't so enjoyable. The building is beautiful, a piece of history.
D. J.
A little gem of an afternoon visit in the middle of the city. Wide selection of art across the rooms. Went for a particular photo exhibition had read about in the Guardian and was not disappointed.

A. B.
Great exhibition of Thomas Ruff photos, well curated and enough space to do it justice, but not overwhelming. Friendly staff and interesting building. Good shop too.
G.
An amazing contemporary art gallery in East London, the best one in that area. Many exhibitions always on at the same time, changing every three/four months. Lots of events, projections, courses and conferences as well. Especially lively on a Thursday night, when it's open late (until 9pm).
J. W.
The free exhibitions are often pretty abstract and certainly modern. Can be difficult to get your head around and sometimes a bit patchy, but great that it exists. Has cafe and toilets too.
R. R.
Nice gallery, good position, just on the small side.
G. T.
Totally fab
J. B.
Small gallery, good for a quick 20 minute walk around. Had some very conceptual stuff when I visited, which went straight over my head. Clean well maintained too, with a nice café
R. N.
Quite thought provoking and contemporary art
R. R.
Electronic superhighway exhibition was great fun. Good for the geeks. I pop back every month or so to see what's on - never disappointed.
P. C.
They put on really nice exhibitions and the building itself is really nice so it's definitely worth going to if you're in the neighbourhood.
H. M.
Just discovered Whitehchapel Gallery a few weeks back - it's gorgeous! If you do make it to Whitechapel, go to the gallery and have dinner at nearby Pakistani restaurant Tayebs. The gallery runs regular events and is spacious and has an eclectic collection.
e. l.
Awesome place to visit. Not your typical gallery. Like a breath of fresh air when it comes to new ideas from various artists that are featured.
D. B.
Always coming here because they have loads of free exhibitions and huge modern variety of art. Great cafe as well.
S. H.
Good place to go, just to chill out, decent Coffeé and a good spread of cakes and niceties and that's not taking in the galleries.
Take a trip to Whitechapel Gallery and enjoy yourselves
E. B.
I'm an art geek, and this place came highly recommended. With good reason. Amazing space, with great curation, context, contrast, comparison, and impactful artworks.

Nice little gallery with a pleasant tea-room. Free entry but not enough to occupy for more than about 45 minutes.
N. R.
£9 for entry. Michael Armitage is one of the exhibiting artists. Very good.
N. R.
It is not a mere gallery. It is an audio and visual library with also connected books. Time consuming to fully enjoy. Check for events if you don't have time.
T. V. d. W.
Very nice gallery, during my visit most of the rooms were closed due to a change of the exhibition on display. The other rooms are more then OK. Right next to an underground station.
H. Y.
Interesting exhibits. Was here on a first Thursday, fun to explore in the night, but a bit noisy with all the wine drinkers chatting.
B.
Great place to get away from the noisy area. A variety of art in various uncrowded rooms.
K.
I love this gallery and exhibition contents. But place is pretty muddy.
C. B.

T. G. O.
Beautiful place, with great art pieces. What I loved most about here is the service. The staff are friendly and helpful.
P. M.
Excellent food, small enough that the service is really sharp with friendly staff, good menu and much better than kfc next door if you were considering that instead. not cheap but very good value for the quality of food on offer
H. E.
Particular gallery. There are a few paintings to see. In probably 4 different rooms.
N. S.
It was nice to see this gallery but in my opinion there was just a little too much contemporary art.
R. S.
Very nice atmosphere. Superb building.
