Reviews of William Wallace Memorial
If the grave accent wasn't missing from the "a" in "bas", this would translate from the Gaelic as "Death and victory" ("BÀS AGUS BUAIDH"). It actually translates as "Spoke (of a wheel) and victory" or "Palm (of the hand) and victory"... I don't suppose London stonemasons inscribe many Gaelic words!
Good for history general knowledge
The Latin part at the bottom translates to:
I tell you the truth, son, freedom is the best condition, never live like a slave
Death and Victory
Just incase ya wanted to read the full plaque 👍
A very well kept memorial of a an ironic knight who fought for Scottish Independence but came to his execution very near this location.
This is a place to honour and pay homage to a brave Scottish hero who fought and died to preserve his countries freedom. His pledge will be honoured.
Freedom ! (Movie quote) - basically just a simple sign on the wall of the hospital but a very significant spot in history where William Wallace met his end.
If your Scottish a good place to show your respect for one of your own seems people always leaves flowers for respect of the man
Clearly conveyed message of the circumstances surrounding this man's demise, however, Latin language skills required for full appreciation so I may have missed a bit
Nothing spectacular, just a wall plaque but if a Scot it will represent an icon, for others the history of hangings and worse in the immediate area.
Walllace was my cuz bo
If you are not Scottish, you probably know this name because of the movie.
The Scottish leader was executed nearby this memorial.
The site at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London where Sir William Wallace was executed after a sham trial on 23rd August 1305.
On Jack the Ripper tour.
Tour was great apart from fowl language and abuse from homless drunk.
Nice plaque with info. The area is really interesting with a gatehouse from a midevil priory nearby
Crucial British historical site and memorial to a brave and honourable man.
Whole area is rich in history. Worth a walk through this Borough.
Interesting to see this close to Smithfield - in the heart of ye olde london towne!
Probably greatly overlooked. Ita not very large but still was cool to visit
I was taken to see this plaque, as I loved the film, wow
I only know the film never knew this was here. Quite a surprise
Came across this while working at Barts hospital... Interesting to see and read..
Well worth a visit if you're in the area
Located right outside the Smithfield's market you cannot miss this iconic landmark, especially if you seen the movie Braveheart.. freedommmm
Amazing to see this historical memorial place
St Barts and Postmans' Park are wonderful
Very historical right outside st barts hospital.
A commemorative reminder of a past that shouldn't be forgotten
Lots of history. Oldest place of execution in London.
Not easy to find but we'll worth it.
Memorial to William Wallace.
Had to pay my respects. Family would want that.
Everyone knows him!
Lovely area to visit
This the approximate site for public executions of mostly heretics, dissenters and on the occasion, traitors and seditionaries.
A gamut of killing techniques were employed assuring entertainment value for the onlookers.
Two St.Andrew’s Crosses (The Saltire) and the Clan Wallace coat of arms appear on the plaque.
Impeccably maintained on the hospital wall and located in a precinct overloaded with significant historical associations and markers.
A must see place in London!
Very emotional
Very cool
So sad
Things that you find around London
Got to be seen if you are from Scotland.
Poor Mel Gibson!
Nice place to stroll
when was this inscription built
Ok
Wallace is the most important scot in history, its only right that this monument is in place, as most Scots people will never forget what he did for our nation...
Great
Fitting tribute
A place in the heart of London which commemorates the Scottish hero William Wallace as it is the spot where he martyred for the freedom of his country.. Remarkable that there is such a monument on English soil.
The place is not pretty, it is located on the side of a roundabout next to the Smithfield Market and hospital area. However, the message of the plaque is very good and it is a way to remember the bravery of William Wallace when he fought for Scotland against the English.
Memorial to the Scottish hero Sir Willian Wallace. According to the guide, this is where Wallace was tortured and dismembered. There are always flowers and the occasional piece of kilt tied to the memorial railing.
It's worth it. Anyone interested in history at least a little should see it
Sometimes while walking you come across a memorial plaque that even tells you something. Many honors honor people who were a local figure or someone who did something special for the community or country. In this case, almost everyone knows the reason and the person this is about, because almost everyone has seen the Mel Gibson film Braveheart. It is of course to be hoped that some people do not think that the entire story is a Hollywood story and are now even more astonished when they realize: "William Wallace really existed!"
A plaque to a Scottish hero in the heart of London, how much we still have to learn in other countries.
Incredible place. It has a something. The space. The story. The garden is amazing and the church in the background... a corner to visit. Pwro with a special energy
Simple memorial plaque. A must for fans of William Wallace
Off the beaten path but we'll worth it to see for us. Zero tourist besides ourselves.
I was delighted to see that they recognized the heroism of this man
Quite an interesting corner of London
Nice green
Nice story
A place steeped in history
Freeeeeeedooooom
It’s a famous place not just because of the Scottish hero, but you could find one of the oldest church and the oldest house of the City too, which one is the only one that survived the great fire of London.
It might be just a stone plaque on a building, but if you're a Scot and you've any knowledge of the man and what he did for his country, standing in front of it is quite poignant. I found myself thinking of the man and how he was brutally murdered by a foreign king. Those days are past now, and in the past they must remain, but it didn't stop me getting a wee bit misty eyed. 🏴
This memorial plaque to the great Scottish Independence fighter, William Wallace. It sits on a wall of St. Bartholomew's Hospital near the site of Wallace's execution at The Elms, Smithfield.
It's easy to missed, but worth seeking out by Scots.
It's a little difficult to separate the truth from the myth with regards to William Wallace, and if your measure of respect is based on the Mel Gibson vehicle Braveheart then you might be a little sad to learn the truth. The memorial is just fine but I feel it's more likely visited by fanboys than those who know his true story. If your in the area there are other more interesting bits of history and pop culture to see. Charterhouse Square, David Suchet's Hercule Poirot's art deco apartment building. St Bartholomew the Great church and gatehouse. St Barts was used for an episode of Sherlock. There is Smithfield's market. The Golden Boy of Pye Corner. Postman's Park with its memorial to every day people who have done heroic things. Not too mention Guildhall, Roman walls galore. The magnificent St Paul's Cathedral. If you make a trip for just the memorial you're going to be disappointed.
