Reviews of Mamucium Roman Fort Reconstruction
N. V.
A nice area of Manchester with open spaces to take in the views of Manchester of days gone by and the modern views
J. W.
This is a small fort which was built in the 1980s so not to be regarded as original. It's a good reconstruction but too small for a day out.
It offers good views of the surrounding area and you can walk up to the main level which again is quite small. You cannot go inside as far as I could tell.
There is another segment of this fort just around the corner where you can see the end of the Bridgewater canal with its barges and also the railway and my son enjoyed watching the trains pass by.
Fox poop on the steps so beware on your way up! My son enjoyed this but to be clear this is a 10 minute stop off not a day out!
L. E.
A simple reconstruction of the location of the founding fort of Manchester. Nice and interesting.
But sadly not worth the time unless you are close or very into Roman times.
The notice boards tell you more than the stone construction. Though kids might enjoy climbing the latter.
A. “. &. P. o. T. D.
Nice little walk.
N. V.
Good afternoon out for my kids who are learning about the Romans, signage around to explain what it was we were seeing, good views from the top
n. v.
Lovely area to rest and relax around the old and new of Manchester. It's a public area and thus free
N. H.
Lovely bit of local history. Not very big but still a lovely place to visit.
On-street pay and display parking nearby.
K. T.
Together with a section of wall around the corner, this reconstruction of a Roman gatehouse is a quiet reminder of Manchester's beginnings hidden in the bustle of the modern city. One can easily imagine that you are a legionary patrolling the wall, cursing the weather in the province of Britannia, or an ancient British tribesman psyching your self up to storm the ramparts.
F. X. S. T.
An excellent resource, lots of information boards, and lovely for capturing the imagination. Who wouldn't want to march through the gate like a Roman garrison commander?
L. T.
An interesting and usually quiet corner of the city, excellent to see it having been restored and preserved to educate people about the beginning of this fantastic city. A number of detailed signs explaining further links and locations across the city. I love it here, any time of the day or night, and being just off of Deansgate (walk straight down the road opposite the Hilton/Beetham Tower and its on the left before you hit MOSI) extremely easy to find...
S. B.
Interesting place but not a lot to see here. Worth visiting if you're passing by
T. B.
Manchester was built on an old Roman fortress Mamucium. It also hosts one of the oldest still working original train station at Castlefield
R. B.
Nice quite place to site and relax when the weather is great. Amazing how old the fort is.
M. M.
Little piece of reconstructed tucked away history in the heart of Manchester. A great little park to visit and relax in.
T. H.
Historical Roman Site Well Worth A Visit If Your In The Area.
M. B.
I love tucked away bits of history that show the juxtaposition of new versus old versus antiquity and manage to remain despite the modern world's tendency towards disposable architecture.
T. R.
Great little place to visit.in the heart of Manchester.
A. R.
Worth a short visit to read about Manchester's early history.
m. w.
Only walk distance from the Wharf, Manchester. A monument of the ancient worth to visit. Well preserved.
J. S.
Nice to see a reconstructed Roman Fort gateway with some ditches and a bit of remaining old wall in the city.
You can climb the stairs onto the ramparts and have an elevated view of it and your surroundings.
Apparently from 79AD when one Agricola marched his troops to make camp on this spot. It is the 1st recorded history of human habitation in Manchester.
It's curious that there is a statue of a small group of sheep. You would have thought it would have been of Roman soldiers instead.
In close proximity to the Museum of science and industry.
K. W.
Kind of hidden and very industrial area in general but the canal is lovey and there are lots of pubs and restaurants. Lots of seating along the canal and plenty of boats and animals to look at.
M.
Love the history of this place. To know your walking in the footsteps of the Romans is inspiring
D. W.
A really great day out for people of any age.and entrance is free.
E. E.
Very nice place
Clean
Nice view
P. W.
An interesting place, and not in a place you would expect. It hadn't dawned on me that Manchester by virtue of its name had to have had a Roman Fort.
It is good to see the fort in the context of all the later archaeology/history that surrounds it.
I have only given it four stars as it is beginning to look a teeny bit neglected - it is as if a grant was given to create the reconstruction and then money for maintenance ran out.
Worthwhile though particularly if you also visit the adjacent museum of Science and Industry.
D. N.
Imagination is required to get the picture in your mind .. it is ruins of an old castle type building .. really interesting but not a great deal to look at
H. R.
Great view from the ruin. Not of the ruin. As there is nothing to see. 😆
D. R.
Pretty basic, but a simple look at some old ruins and a re built fort entrance. There's not alot of information about Manchesters origins. But this is an interesting piece of history that is worth seeing and knowing. There are a couple of sign posts of information and you can walk on the wall too.
A. W.
It's very old one castlefiled.
A. M.
Unfortunately not much to see and people people can walk all over the ruins.
K. U.
Hidden gem of Manchester. Must visit place
B. M.
Unexpected historical location, who knew the Romans camped here for centuries! Reconstruction is interesting, more of a playground than a museum. Could Manchester acquire one of the nearby historical industrial spaces and also house a museum to this history, and the finds from Manchester archeological activity?
L. M.
Good place to go around
L. S.
They built a very good reconstruction of the wall and gates using local stone, with plenty of information boards to explain the site and its history.
D. J.
Great that a city like Manchester has so much history going back this far. Situated in gardens where you can relax, it's worth popping down to learn about how this great city began.
K. S.
Interesting runes
A. L. R.
Reconstructed, do not expect a great deal. Nice stop for a visit to the city. Still is the place were the first stone of ancient Mancunium was laid.
B. M.
A nice historic place visit for a picnic or A great place for a pub crawl.
J. G.
Historically brilliant, the birthplace of Manchester. Quite a lot to read in and around the Fort too for anyone who's interested.
M. K.
Needs more ruins and for the ground to be tenderised so it takes in more rainwater because it turns into a swamp in heavy rain. Too much dog poo not cleaned up too.
s. 3. A. O.
Nice place for sketching
M. M.
Interesting to see. I didn't know it was there. Had a walk around Manchester. It's cool
J. B.
Reconstructed fort tucked away in the corner of Castlefield
Feels a bit overlooked and neglected.
T. A.
Basically the historical site was destroyed it the time of the industrialisation which is sad, but the copy there is okay.
B. J.
Smaller than I thought but boards are educational
f. z.
Lived in Manchester my whole life I didn't even know that this existed.
M. M.
Very interesting place. Nice area
P. F.
Good to see an relax
D. B.
Smaller than I expected, so only stayed for about 10 minutes
M. S.
I sit here and watch office workers trying to not get caught, having clandestine affairs.
Г. Б.
Not a real fort, as you might ve read already, but anyway worth visiting.
A. J.
It's a modern recreation of what might have been left by the Romans.
p. w.
Very good day out.Well worth the visit.

(Translated) It is a reconstruction of the ancient Roman ruins in the area. The park itself is beautiful, pleasant and well-kept. However, the environment does not give the impression of being an ancient Roman area, it lacks some atmosphere and above all, information.

Sehr stimmungsvolles Fort mit gelungener Teilrekonstruktion. Viele informative Tafeln. Wenn man genug Zeit hat, einen Besuch (bei Schönwetter) wert. Danach ins nahe White Lion Pub.

(Translated) Castefield was precisely the place where the ancient Romans founded the future Manchester, about two millennia ago, building the Fort Mamucium and whose remains with the crenellated towers have come down to the present day. Just away from the center, this is certainly the most pleasant and poetic part of modern Manchester, an oasis of peace and tranquility surrounded by man-made canals which in the past were used to transport goods in the Great Britain of the Industrial Revolution. In short, you cannot miss a walk in this suggestive area of the city, lulled by the gentle sound of the waters among the typical English red brick buildings but in the background the buildings of modern England and the houseboats that still decorate these canals.
(Original)

(Translated) The maintenance at the place is embarrassing and unfortunate, such an important and interesting place, it's a shame they don't invest

Restored or rebuilt Roman fort, or rather just the foundations. A few plaques give historical insights into bygone Roman times. But not particularly spectacular. The free metro buses go there. So if you have time, you can check it out. But you don't have to.
