Reviews of The Hornby Visitor Centre
Really enjoyed our trip to the Hornby Visitor Centre today. Really good displays, lots of interesting exhibits and displays for young and old alike. Plenty of interactive stuff for younger ones to get stuck into. Great cafe and incredibly well stocked shop as well. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend a visit!
Easy access and parking. The shop and cafe are well laid out and far too inviting! The displays are also tempting and need a strong resolve not to picture each of the layouts in your mind's eye as you exit into the shop once again. Only minor problem: it's very warm in the displays.
It's Ok for an hour, but could be so much better, especially with all the full size locomotives stored in the same building but not accessible to the public.
Got here when it opened at 10.00. Free parking. No queues. £5 for adults. Half that for over 60s. Didn't notice kids prices. Spent an hour looking around the model trains, Scalextric and Airfix kits. Brings back really happy memories of my childhood & youth. Some great stuff on show here and there is lots to buy on the fully stocked shelves. We had a cuppa in the cafe afterwards. Some nice food coming out of the kitchen but we didn't sample any of it. If you're over this way it's well worth a visit. Some good info about Tri-ang , Meccano & other toy manufactures to read up on .
Well worth a visit, just to see the different trains planes and automobiles that are designed by Hornby, The visitor centre is a must, there's lots of displays and interactive displays to enjoy, Can't wait for the new 1 collection to open, Classic Engines and Carriages like Winston Churchills funeral carriage, and the first tracklayer that made a 00 gauge model,
My son loved it here, he's 10 and lived his corgi cars., Lots to see, activities for kids, clean cafe for a coffee and lunch, in the gift shop they have £50 Hornby gift bags for £20.... They are so worth the money. £12.50 entry fee for all three of us re 2 adults 1 child. Clean toilet facilities on site. The coast is less that 10 mins away Including all the shops u need.
Excellent place to visit only thing I would say it needs more Airfix
A great place to visit & have a look round in the museum & see all the models
Really nice little museum with lots to keep kids entertained.
My 2yo really liked the Perspex domes the let you get right into the middle of the train track and all the buttons to get the trains moving and my 9yo had lots of fun on the scalextric track.
It’s not huge so an hour or 1.5hours is plenty.
Lovely museum interesting and entertaining for both kids and parents! Great cafe!!! :)
Really awesome little place, packed in with classic and modern examples of really detailed replicas. Great for both kids and adults alike, the Harry potter section could be a bit bigger, the cafe is well stocked and plenty to keep kids entertained. Be careful you enter and exit through the shop, so be prepared to fork out on toys for the little ones.
Great model railways and scale tricks displays our 5 Yr old and 2 year old loved the scalextrix racing and the removing railways. Bought a no glue scale model for 5 year old to build. Great 1.5 hours.
Excellent trip. Great trail for kids. Super exhibitions. Lovely cafe.
Hubby was like the cat that got the cream, worth every minute.
Good for both the kids and experienced collectors. Good overview of company history and a few unusual items on show, along with modern displays.
Nice to see my book there@
Very good place to take kids. Made me feel old seeing the models I used to play with as a kid in a museum. Friendly staff, good price. Would have been nice to see more of the range running on layouts with more detail. Very well stocked shop with a few models I hadn't seen elsewhere.
Great idea. Let down by staff not checking exhibits.
Arrived at 11am only been open 1 hour.
3 exhibits not working, trains off the track
No power to racing cars.
A small but fun center with lots of different tracks laid out with a definite focus on stuff kids would like with interactive elements, they had a scaletrix section too with a few tracks to play with. The shop was very comprehensive too. There was a cafe but we didn't stop in.
We love a visit here, especially the new Harry Potter trains! Wow so worth the money. The cafe is also quite good, although I think a kids lunch box will set you back about £5 each... But do nice coffees for the Parents while the kids can play with extra activities in the cafe. Make sure you have other plans though as it is quite small and my 3 seem to wizz through quickly! They sometimes have clipboards and questions for the older kids to get interacting with the displays but was disappointed as the last few times they havent had this.
Exciting new prospects for the visitor centre, we received a taster of what is to come today and if they continue to develop as they want to, I believe it will make a brilliant attraction for thanet.
The original museum area is open as well as is the cafe and shop, where you can buy all sorts of hornby, scalextric and air fix products. The addition of real the locomotives and carriages is excellent and I look forward to the other changes they wish to bring forward for the near future.
The guys in the storage areas were tremendously friendly and happy to assist with any question relating to what's on show and have personal stories to tell as they have worked in the industry for years.
Such a great little museum
Went on Heritage open day so free, usually £5. Good if you like model trains & scalextric
This is great for little boys from 3 to 93. Hands on displays to drive model trains, and a chance to race Scalectrix cars.
Great for kids of all ages, even those in their 60s. Informative and interactive with some great deals in the shop as well. Take the whole family for a trip down memory lane and and insight into the future. The new and improved visitor centre is well worth a visit and great value for money
A must for train, plane and automobile enthusiasts
Nice experience. My son liked it a lot. It takes about 40 min to tour the museum. Caffè on site. Good size shop full of trains and other toys/models.
Joy, train sets, scalextric racing and the history of iconic brands of toys.
Some brilliant working train sets, and the story of how trains and models are made.
This is a brilliant experience and a great way of spending some time.
Very interesting. Was actually quite surprised how interesting it was. Working displays and clear layouts. Excellent value for money and shop well stocked.
I was quite disappointed and really thought it would have been a lot bigger still a nice place to visit though.
Not quite what we expected. Didn't take an hour to look around. Thought there would be more layouts. What was there was good.
Fantastic for the big kid in you
Went with my family yesterday and really enjoyed. Museum very good and great displays.Had a coffee in cafe again first class .Bought a model airfix at a great value reduced price.
I'm not a model maker but inspired
Well worth a visit, reasonably priced entry and a pleasant cafe.
Unless your a die hard model railway enthusiast, then it doesn't last longer than an hour. Kids will like it. Needs more child freindly priced items, as all kids like to buy something.
Been a few times, scale electric and train sets are good. The history is interesting,. Always a bargain to be got
What an amazing place to visit for all the family, absolutely fascinating. It has a shop and huge coffee shop seating area
Good shop 4 buying model kits +, models already done pants model railways etc bit pricey tho
Well worth visit. Brings back lots of nostalgia. Lovely staff.
Kids love it. Also my 40 year old son enjoys picking out toys he had as a child cafeteria good, especially sausage rolls!
Great little place, stopped here on the way to Broadstairs. The cafe has some great little bits too.
It's a great place to go with the family
The kids will love it, took me back to my younger years lol.
A great place to visit for any model railway enthusiast. There are quite a few layouts with a variety of trains in display. There are a few that you can control, including a Thomas layout and Scaletrix. The cafe has a good selection of drinks and snacks. There's free on site parking.
A wonderful place to visit, with fascinating history and examples of bygone models, as well as modern methods of design and production. A very comprehensive shop to view and purchase examples. Excellent value for money.
Excellent a great day out for children and adults alike.
Great place to visit if you like Hornby, Airfix and Scalextric and kids will love the museum part. They have a cafe as well but just for the basics.
Excellent once we were in there and a great cafe as well. Just didn't look very open, not sure how that situation could be improved . Unlikely to get any passing trade unless you know it's there
Worth a look if your into model kits and model railway
This place is a must for anyone interested in Models & Hornby. You get to see a large array of models from Hornby, Scalextric, Corgi, Airfix etc. showing you thow they have developed over the years and getting to play with a small no. of them. Once you exit the Museum there is a good size restaurant and more importantly a large size shop with all the latest models for you to add to your collection! A very enjoyable day out!
Well worth a visit for fans of Hornby, Airfix and Scalextric.
Great day out cafe good food and value for money . Good history and lsyouts very interactive and hands on displays
2nd visit in 3 days, my son loves trains!! Very good but the restaurant was closed again but available for takeaways? Friendly staff and a good place to visit.
This place is legendary, I went here with my sister and her young son. We had a great afternoon looking at all the toys and the train and racing layouts, all children will really love this place. This has a tremendous history in English manufacture of toys and is well worth a visit
Great place to visit my husband was as happy as a child in a sweet shop!! My two children enjoyed playing scaleletrix. Loads of choice in the gift shop we didn't use cafe but smelt good. Friendly staff worth a visit to bring out your inner child!!
We happened to go on an open day, it was brilliant. We were all allowed to go into the large full sized train area which made the trip for us 😊
The only criticism I have is that alot of the displays were adult height chest level hence children could not see the displays or had to be lifted up, which isn't easy when they are 3+ years of age.
Staff very informative and friendly.
Went to the Hornby visitors centre primarily for Scalextric and it has some good displays for all of Hornbys interests but mostly model trains which are amazing. There are a couple of small scalextric layouts to play on but sadly the big Silverstone one is not open to play with. The shop has a good display of sale items with a few bargains available.
Have visited before and enjoyed both times.
Interesting visitors centre and nice café.
Fascinating and well set out. Good museum with good facilities.
A great museum with lots to see. a must go for any model making enthusiast.
Lovely interesting place with some great model reconstructions.
As a keen collector of Meccano products including Hornby Dublo with a large collection of Scalextric and a recent Hornby model railway I was always going to enjoy this.
Having cycled there I was a bit disappointed by the absence of any bicycle parking.
Great place to have a look around for an hour or so. Once spent 5 hours here with my family doing arts and craft and looking at trains! A great place to go for a look around with a great Thomas the train layout kids can use!
Wonderful. Wanted to go there for years. Brilliant place. Loved the shop
Lovely trip out for uoung lad of 11.
Worth the concessionary price of admission, luckily only 2 other people visiting so no queues. Several good railway layouts to look at and a couple of scalextric tracks to try. Excellent display of airfix kits. Allow about an hour to hour and a half.
Excellent visit. Lots to see. Good cafe
Been meaning to visit here for some time and glad I did. Took my grandson who loved playing with the Scalextric tracks. I myself had memories of my youth playing with my train sets. Well worth a visit, I shall return.
Great - well worth a visit. £5 entry for the museum is well worth it.
Kids enjoy it, full of old memories for the adults too.
Great place ,a tad expensive, for the exclusives
Really friendly staff, clean and tidy area, superb cafe. Loved the place
A great place to go and relive your childhood and be surprised how many of the scalextric cars you own
Even if your not into trains you will still find it interesting. There is lots to see and kids can press buttons to get trains moving. Then pop to the cafe for a coffee and something to eat. You won't be disappointed.
Visitors center is bigger than expected and lots more for children and big kids to interact with. Surprisingly entertaining.
Personally I was a little underwhelmed, good value for money the museum area, the displays would only have 1-2 trains running at most. One of the displays which you could interact with had broken trains on it.
That being said it's good for a cheap quick day out for young kids as it has a Thomas the tank engine track which kids can get hands on with, a few scaletrix tracks to play on and on a few displays with buttons to set trains off.
45 minutes and you'll have explored the entire area.
The store has plenty of stuff to buy, of course all Hornby related and primarily OO gauge.
Probably of more interest to adults than kids. Big scalextric layout not working the day we were there which was disappointing for our son. They could do so much more with opportunities to try the digital railway and scalextric controllers, more layouts doing interesting stuff. Ok for a wet morning but definitely only 3 stars.
Excellent exhibition of all the classic models, Triang, Corgi, Airfix, Lledo etc. Several working layouts that you can operate. Fortunately not too busy when we were there so able to dwell and enjoy. Good cafe encouraged longer stay. Able to park Motor home, although specific marked bays would help.
Good value of you like trains / train sets. Excellent café and shop with no admittance charge.
Several layouts of trains as well as displays of models trains and other 'collectables'. Interesting to visit though you don't necessarily need to spend long which isn't a problem as it is very cheap. Cafe has limited food but the shop is no cheaper than anywhere else
Few nice train layouts cheap enough to get in but the shop is very expensive
It was ok to pass an hour of wet weather while in the area, there's not really enough there to make a point of going, cafe pleasent enough... possibly the entrance fee was a little high for the exhibits.
For children from the 70's an absolute joy! For children now interested in trains, plains and cars a must.
Sharon and I had a good look round and a cup of coffee in the cafe before leaving.
A paradise for children and parents alike. Very reasonably priced.
Very interesting Centre and an equally interesting museum. Well worth a visit.
A fanatic shop, with a wide range of products.
Full priced shop (the bargain bins though are very interesting), but it's more than worth a visit for the museum which covers the history of the current Hornby brands. If possible, go when the 1:1 is open, currently Bittern, Black 5, 4-SUB, Liverpool Overhead EMU, an LMS, GWR and EPB coaches and a very cute Wickham trolley.
If you are an enthusiastic collector then the shop is great. The entrance is not very well signed but you can always park on the road or next door in the DIY centre.
A small museum inside the shop. Small charge for entrance but a lovely little walk around which our son loved. Hogwarts at the end a real treat. .
Really nice, great price and lovely to walk around for anyone who had trains as a kid. One or two displays appeared to be damaged. Surprised nobody had sorted them.
Helpful staff, good selection of models and supplies. Great place for the enthusiastic.
So much more than we realized! Lots for the little one to look at and interact with too, especially the toys in the café. We got the annual subscription!
Love this place, as do the boys. Waste an hour or so looking around and playing with the trains and Scalectrix. Unfortunately they've shut the cafe which is bonkers, and disappointed to hear the relocation is no longer happening.
My son loved the museum but the cafe was the show stopper for me. Homemade sausage rolls and cake wow
Small but my 2 year old would go everyday. A few small tracks and a nice cafe which has toys to play with
This after all was the old Triang Lines Brothers factory I see why Hornby Rovex is obcessed with it as they moved out of it and now came back in again! In all a great attraction for lovers of the models in the Red and Yellow boxes over the last sixty years!
Amazing collection with interactive displays and slot car racing. Huge shop, worth a visit as it's cheap to enter and quite interesting.
Great fun !
2 hours drive for a 20 minutes visit, but worth it
Well worth a visit. Shop has just about everything. Staff helpful. Cafe good
Museum excellent.
I love visiting here! Quaint little museum of collectibles with interactive exhibits. Cheap day out and kids under 5 go free.
interesting museum. I'd prefer if they sold their products at lower prices, as at the moment the prices are equal to or higher than any retail shop, which doesn't make sense as it is literally part of the factory.
Great visit . Sensible entry price. Met Mr Hornby and got him to autograph an airfix calender for us. Nice guy nice to chat
Loved it, fantastic. A real must on anyone’s list for Margate/Ramsgate.
Bit disappointed that not all displays were working
Nothing to buy for up to 2 year olds
My grandson of 22 months broke his heart when we left as he loved it so much
Good value for money
Stopped of for lunch, nice little place. Plus it has a museum and a couple of train tracks you can have a look at while you eat.
Well worth a visit
Very pleasant morning seeing the models. The detail is amazing
Really enjoyed this visit, lovely old models right up to modern day.
working layouts and self drive model race cars.
Great food and excellent service. Popped into the White Hart for lunch from the M2. Much much better than any motorway service meal.
Great place to visit just wish it had all up to date and new releases they got tons of stock but not enough there
My son had a really good time and so did his grandad so I guess it's fun for all ages!
Nice selection aof childhood memories
If you like model trains and scalextric then this is a must!
Haven't been yet
A lovely hour spent here. All trains not running; but had to go back to reception to ask for some trains to be activated.
Brought back many memories of my childhood building models and trainsets etc.
Brilliant. So much to look at and learn. And for such a small price! Great for the whole family.
Lovely little place with a great shop
If you are into model trains Hornby Visitor Centre is well worth a visit.Spend 2to3 hours great fun
Great breakfast and helpful staff....love the nostalgia of kits I built as a kid....grandkids will love it
Great value for money but it's a shame the cafe has closed down
Lovely open weekend well done for every one who was working and helping out
Awwsome day out fab trains and cars old school stuff plenty to do cool shop
A great tour of one of Britain's much loved toy manufacturers.
Very interesting. Loads of memories rekindled. Great game of scalectrix.
Amazing place to visit. Will be going back for sure
Wonderful place to visit and see all the toys from your childhood
I love models. I want to live here. Excellent visit.
Great place to visit and you get to being a child again!
Great museum at the site with the most history for the company. Hornby are back on track.
Really good for anyone wanting new hobby or have an interest in locomotives
An enjoyable and nostalgic visit for any Hornby, Airfix, Corgi or Scalextric enthusiast.
Good and interesting venue if model railways are of interest to you.
Amazing displays, good café, well stocked shop
Great afternoon out, good value and fun for children.
Very impressive looking forward to my next visit , my 84th birthday treat ?
What a great place friendly. And a nice restaurant
Nice display of all things Hornby, Scalextric etc. Worth the visit.
Alot to see and for children to interact with.
I'm in the process of building my own model railway layout so got alot of inspiration. Worth a visit.
If your stuck for something to do one morning or afternoon it is well worth a visit. You won't be there long probably no more than an hour, brought back a few memories and brings out the child in you a little. Displays and quality of the model making just amazing and the cafe was really good to.
Interesting visit. Ideal for enthusiasts of model trains Scalextric, etc.
Absolutely loved it here , so much to see and do. Lots of model cars and kits available to buy. Excellent cafe.
I would like to give Hornby a 5, I really would, as I have loved their products since I was a boy but the museum felt like a backward step compared to the old version. It is really a showcase for the company's products as much as a museum. The old one had a timeline and you could see much loved toys of old. It is not like that now. Some of the models were under solid displays so I had to get down on my knees to see some of them (a lot of knee clicking going on) and there was no internal lighting so you were trying to peer into the gloom when you were on your knees. Friendly staff and some good bargains if they happen to have something you would like on offer.
Extremely well displayed history of Hornby etc. the interactive parts all work which is a great change.
The cafe is very good and the disabled access is excellent.
Wonderful museum for model enthusiasts. Lots of model history and also several interactive Scalextric tracks and gorgeous train layouts. Friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful spacious shop (some model shops are cramped and dusty, not this!). Even a nice little cafe to have a cup of tea! Easy to reach from Margate on the Loop bus. Highly recommended.
I feel the entry should be free, as there really isnt alot to see, and only one room, but can understand why it needs the money to continue on. Free parking on site, really cute cafe but expensive, probably aimed at a much older or younger generation than myself but i could still appreciate the items. A good pit stop if you’re going to ramsgate anyway.
Not as much to do or see as i thought there would be, good nonetheless, nice ww2 display and a couple of classic cars to look at. Nice tea room and of course the shop, you could spend a fortune. Would like to have seen more history boards on the companies and artists etc but a very reasonably priced few hours.
For children and enthusiasts of Hornby it is a great place to spend a couple of hours, cafe facility and scalextric track set out for the children to use. Good historical info as well.
I was bored rigid but my husband absolutely loved it! Really friendly staff greet you and the displays are well thought out as you move around the centre. It was a real trip down memory lane for my husband and I had to rein him in at the shop to stop him spending the kids inheritance on the bountiful stock they hold.
The fact that Hornby still operate from the site surely is a sign that their appeal is still strong. Entrance was £5 each which I thought was very reasonable and now I’ve banked a favour from him to use when I please ! There are soo many photos I could post but I’ll spare you, don’t want to ruin it for future visitors !
Very lovely and interesting to see all the models of the trains throughout the years and the lay outs of them all. Was a fun quick visit. Shop, toilets and cafe is also included here.
As an adult, re live your childhood toy memories. Friendly staff. And take the kids plenty for them to do for an hour or two.
Great place to visit. The shop is fantastic. The museum is brilliant and the cafe is great!
Very entertaining exhibit with a few interactive things to do. Café was nice with decent simple food. Shop was mostly Hornby/Scaletrix etc kits, not much in the way of miscellany.
This was our first visit and we really enjoyed looking at all the displays. The interactive areas were fun and looking at all the small details on the train scenes. Even though we are adults, we enjoyed doing the quiz as well. The staff were friendly and helpful and we enjoyed the refreshments we had in the café. We look forward to visiting again and bringing family with us.
A lovely day out and there was a fabulous sale on too! What’s not to like! 🤣
Very good. Trans planes and cars. Nice selection of model kits too
Nice atmosphere and a real visit into the past (with modern day versions available).
Trains, planes and automobiles (isn't that a movie? ), albeit all models except a few surprises.
Nice little cafe but dont expect too much from it. Tea, coffee, cakes, bangers & mash and suchlike.
Loved seeing my past childhood and nice for your kids.
Definitely worth a visit, rainy day or not.
Such an amazing company right in our doorstep! Nice little museum with a cafe. Brilliant food at good money. Shop is amazing!
Lots more toys to play with than before !
Were made in Great Britain and now made in China
Had a really nice lunch would definitely go back. Was served in the shop by a nice friendly helpful lady, who went in to the store room to fetch Connie and Nellie plus a Rovex wagon for me from the Hornby 70 years at Margate range. All the best from Lord Hanford
Interesting place. A shame that each of the scalextric demonstrations had one broken car on each of them.
Brilliant displays with ideas for my own model railway. Great cafe too and shop.
Great place for kids and adults. Full of old and new train sets and also other toys. They had a work sheet I I took my grandkids and they loved it. Also has a gift shop. Maybe a little bit expensive but it is what it is
A worthwhile hour or two for anyone interested in model trains and other transport.
There's an exhibition telling the stories of Hornby and the many other brands that they own, with old and new examples on display. There are several working railway layouts ranging from simple "Thomas and friends" through to layouts with DCC and working sound. A few are "hands on" but it's mostly better suited to older children and adults rather than small children.
There's a well stocked model shop, and the cafe does good value snacks and drinks.
A great visit, especially with kids. Would be even better if it was slightly bigger, the rest of the former factory looks like it needs some love and attention, but the visitor centre was great. Highly recommended.
Just like bein a big kid. So many models and interesting items as well as scalectrix to play with and working railways. Cafe is also very good and very reasonably priced, the sausage rolls are wonderful.
My three year old grandson loves it here !
Really good place to visit reasonable prices and really good models and train sets on display we'll worth a visit
This is the first time of coming here following seeing the programme on TV. Really impressed, the museum/visitor centre is well worth looking round, you can even have a play with the scalectric. Great fun. The sausage rolls in the cafe are huge and can be be recommended
Brilliant place to visit. The cafe was lovely and the model layouts were amazing. All ages in our group really enjoyed the visit. The shop has a big selection to buy. I highly recommend that you visit
I kept saying, l used to have one of those.
Brilliant little gem. Took my young kids here and they loved driving the trains and playing with the Scalextric. Almost feels too cheap. Cracking little café as well which would be worth a visit on its own. Highly recommend
Great selection in the gift shop. Able to get some airfix models as presents.
A really nice place to go with family for an hour or so. Everyone is very friendly and there is plenty to see and do for young and old, plus a very pleasant cafe to enjoy.
Not awful but I really expected more elaborate layouts rather than Hornby showing off products...
I took my 10yr old daughter to the museum tour and she loved all the displays and the fact that she could play with some of the exhibits
Enjoyed walking around looking at all the exhibits. Had a drink in the cafe. Spent a couple of hours here
Excellent to visit with the kids. The cafe is really nice good prices and staff are friendly. The museum is worth a visit and the shop is very good. Always love going here with the kids.
Absolutely fantastic! Awesome museum, shop and cafe! Fantastic value for money. Highly recommend especially on a rainy day! It's a modelling paradise!
Small scale, most excellent place.
Love a quick stop n a drink here if thats a warm up in winter or a cool down on hot day plenty off space for motorcycle and always warm welcome
