Reviews of Grey's Monument
S. M.
A must visit attraction if you are in Newcastle upon tyne. A historic icon of the city as I have heard. You will find this in the middle of the city centre. The place has a different vibe with restaurants around and music playing. It is a great place to take a break while exploring the city.
C. S. L. H. R.
Grade 1 listed monument built in 1838. Earl Grey stands atop a Roman Doric column at a height of 135 ft - 41m. The sculptor who created the statue, Edward Hodges Baily also created Nelson's statue in Trafalgar Square. 1941 saw the statue's head struck by a lightning bolt. A new head was created from fragments of the original. You can access the viewing platform at the top occasionally, but it was closed when I visited. There are a couple of useful information boards nearby.
P. N.
This review is for people who come here in December. This place is filled with foods, bar and places to hangout with friends. Foods like churros, duck wrap ,fries and shopping decoration for Christmas and many more. People who are coming in December to Newcastle have fun.
a. v.
It was erected to acclaim Earl Grey for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832 and stands at the head of Grey Street. It consists of a statue of Lord Grey standing atop a Roman Doric column on a pedestal of local sandstone, 135-foot-high (41 m) in total. The column was designed by local architects John and Benjamin Green, and the statue was created by the sculptor Edward Hodges Baily. A spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform at the top of the monument, which is occasionally opened to the public.
A.
A VERY tall monument in a very busy area. Fun to look at and take pictures of, but it’s surrounded by people wanting you to sign petitions or donate money, etc. which can make it tough to enjoy that part of Newcastle.
J. K.
A stunning historic monument. It is an iconic part of Newcastle and a landmark for locals when giving directions.
R. N.
Monument Tour was great, we were able to go up the inside to the viewing platfo at the top! The view over Newcastle were spectacular
J. A.
One of the most famous landmarks of Newcastle, there are cafes, restaurants and shopping 🥰
m.
An iconic landmark of Newcastle and monument to Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey. It's position at the top of a hill and the junction of several a lot streets makes it clearly visible from a long way off. It's an impressive 130 something metres tall and definitely worth a detour to see.
a. l.
Really tall and is surrounded by shops and also the Christmas Market is really cool
E. W.
Great central place to watch the world go by! Very popular and plenty of places to sit down!
P. S.
Nice tall monument standing in the middle of the busy area. Supposedly can be climbed for a nice view.
M. H.
Stands out at the top of Gray Street Newcastle, where it is surrounded by shops, bars & eateries, or just relax on it's steps and listen to buskers in the sunshine. Part of this cities history and architecture. Buzzing place.
A. V.
A distinctive monument, huge and beautiful. A good meeting point as it's central. I don't know much about it's history because it was too cold and wet to hang around!
J. R.
Amazing historic column in the centre of Newcastle, stunning views from street level. Easy to get to with the local buses and Metro stopping close by.
L. S.
One of the most iconic parts of Newcastle. Lived here for 18 years and still fascinated by it every time I look up. Amazing markets held here at Christmas and other times of the year.
J. N.
Had a lovely time at the Christmas Market and enjoyed Après bar. Would recommend visiting here.
P. S.
I love monument, one of the busiest area of the Newcastle city. And love the markets
R. A.
Central area dominated by this. Lots of things happen here. Bit like speaker's corner in London. Worth a look.
k. k.
Absolutely favorite in Newcastle, just get there in the evening, sit near the monument and the whole town rotates around you. There are restaurants available nearby as well. Bus stops are a stone throws away and you can see down the grey street till the theater which leads down to Quay side. Wonderful place.
H. Y. C.
A rich history of the monument and the area nearby. Very eye catching location and a common meeting point easy to spot. Always festive and filled with events on a regular basis. Some time, it also turns into a sunbathing area in summer and filled with table and chairs for people as a place to rest and chill for a whole day. Famous for busker to do performance too. A busy, vibrant and lovable area.
I also went to a top of monument tour once this year and the view over the city from the top at a height about 48 m is fabulous, pretty much captures every landmark at once.
D. i. G.
Love this spot as the sun rises over Newcastle in the morning.
M. R.
The best Monument in the city centre! Really tall. Made of nice looking stone. Secret door at the bottom. Meet new friends any hour of the day. Free pigeons included. Tribute to Earl Grey's Great Reform Bill. Try it, you won't regret it.
A. S.
Nice place to Hangout with your gang.
Nice music artists performing live is a treat.
A. C.
A truly iconic landmark in the city which is really useful considering it has one of the city's most important transport hubs underneath it in Monument Metro Station.
If you get the opportunity to go to the top the view is amazing. Unfortunately, the viewing platform isn't regularly open to the public.
r. j.
Weekends are amazing on this place. Pubs are available near by.
m.
Met my son here with no problems, there's very often something going on here too such as a really good Christmas market or sometimes there's a French market or a farmers market, there's also a great pub with outside seating just by it for stopping for a drink & people watching...
I Really like this place!
C. S.
Beautiful monument with history, lovely tourist spot to visit for photos and an inscription on to explain the historical side of it.
After visiting here you can turn around and see Grey Street which is a brilliant walk and worth seeing at evening time or evening time to see it lit up by building light.
L.
Easy to spot landmark and a popular meeting point. People tend to meet around the steps of the monument since it's a central location in town. There are often protesters, petition gatherers, street performers, speakers, etc around the monument so it can be a bit crowded. There are lots of shops, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants nearby, as well as Monument Metro station. The main bus station isn't far away either.
S. L.
An excellent monument to an unsung hero of Democracy in the UK and to the world famous type of tea too!
Sadly the number of opportunities to climb the spiral staircase inside right up to the top are few and far between as this is done by volunteers only. It's worth checking out online as to when the next time to go up is as the view from up there is remarkable!
C. B. (. m.
Its a meeting place. The hustle and bustle of daily activity is truely a great experience. It changes from day to day with farmers markets to music events. Monument Metro is here so its so easy getting to and from other parts. The Monument itself is a sight to see. I sed to climb up all the internal tower stairs as a child. I wonder if it ever opens to the public now.
C. A.
Slightly biased as this is my home town but this iconic landmark sits at the top Grey’s Street of one of the most architectural impressive streets in the UK. The hub of Newcastle which is a buzzing city the view from the top is incredible.
M. S.
The architecture is impressive. You can find this place busy everytime. Lot of musicians and beggars around throughout the day. Lot of events going around this monument. Iconic architecture for newcastle people.

Centre of Newcastle you’re not going to miss it. From here you can shop, find a lovely restarting, head down the queyside and stop off at one of the many bars. Usually something going on here. Also has a metro stop underneath it.
R. T.
Situated in the heart of Newcastle city centre. This brilliant monument is a great place for people to congregate and sit to admire the surrounding views. It's at the top of Grey Street, voted best Street in the UK.
M. D.
Went for the farmer's market. There weren't many stalls - 10 or so only - but the range was different to supermarket stuff and all stallholders were happy to talk about their produce and give samples. No warm street food though.
C. d.
Grey's Monument- a large monument that seems to be regarded as the centre of the City Centre. It's a common meeting place, and often has a market around it at certain times of the year.
It is also a common place for public events to take place- including rallies, charity gathering, large screen films, and markets.
R. T.
Grey's Monument, often simply called Monument, dominates over Newcastle to the point that it is the focus of most directions you'll receive. It appears stunning in rain or shine, and hosts markets, rallies, and musicians throughout the year. Truly the heart of Newcastle.
t. 3.
Many old monuments commemorate pretty questionable individuals (Harry Dundas on top of a high pillar in Edinburgh was known as a great opponent to the abolition of slavery, for instance). However this one commemorates someone much more supportable, and not only for the tea in his name. This pillar also opens during English Heritage Open Days - if interested, keep your eyes open for those opportunities, usually in Sept. Great views on top.
R. K.
Central meeting location with easy access to the metro and shopping locations
R. W.
Well known landmark and location in Newcastle City centre
H. A.
Very impressive monument reminiscent of Nelson's Column, set in attractive open area. Useful landmark for navigating the city centre. Interesting historical structure.
k.
Brilliant tour steeped in history one and half hour visit to the corprate box's, ground, museum, all about the histiry huw the club was forned, home and away changeing rooms, lots to mention and tour guide was richard and he knew hus stuff.
P. N.
Beautiful City, first discovered Newcastle back in 1997 when I rejoined the Army. It was around October of that year when I got off the train at the Central Station. Yes , it was cold , Newcastle can get extremely cold durring the autumn and winter months.
This City will help you understand what it's like to live in a friendly envirnment within the UK , especially if you are from London.
Well worth a visit and Grey's Monument is a good starting point to start your exploration of this great Northen City.
T.
It's a cool monument I guess, good place to meet up and use as a landmark. Buuuut it's very common for beggers to show up and ask money of you and also for Bible bashing preachers to shout a lot. Also druggies kinda show up sometimes.
I. F.
Grey's Monument is a Grade I listed monument to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey built in 1838 in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne,. It was erected to acclaim Earl Grey for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832 and stands at the head of Grey Street.
Its a nice place sit in the sun and chill letting the world go by.
P. b.
Beautiful historical place 😍
D. J.
Iconic landmark in the center of the city. The internal staircase now only seems to poem on heritage weekend, but very popular so book as soon as possible.
F. -.
Not as grey as you’d imagine but I guess that’s because it’s not referring to the colour.
I love his tea and his government oversaw the abolition of slavery which is pretty awesome if you ask me.
Legend deserves such a great view.
S. S.
Awesome Monument that's massive in size and surrounded by people and awesome stores and food places. Also pretty good for Pokemon Go.
Also, check out the St George statue! =)
S. H.
Costa is my favourite coffee place, this one is small so it's great for grabbing a take away, however there is a small seating area. Staff are always nice and friendly.
D. G.
A lovely Christmas market with plenty of good food and I tried my first muld gin which was different lol I enjoyed it but I think I'd personally stick to the cider and wine 😊
S. R.
Well maintained monument with the occasional chance to climb to the top!
A good marker when you're walking round the town to get a grasp on your location.
J. D.
Often entertainment in one form or another (busker, music band, big screen movies), also used by preachers and protesters as a sounding board. Great meeting point.
R. W.
We we're lucky enough to get tickets to go up the monument and the views from the top are awesome! Great history to the landmark, love it.
R. r. 1.
A central monument in Newcastle upon Tyne and a Meto station stop to a great prime minister who stood for progress and helped with the abolishment of slavery in the Uk and the British empire. The Whig government of the time bought the slaves from the then “owners” and freed them
Monument Easily accessible to the public and FOC
D. R.
One of the central icons and a focal point of Newcastle upon Tyne. Formerly used as a traffic roundabout the area is now pedestrianised and now provides a platform for street music, political speeches, food markets, a moveable feast of street pageant. The column is a memorial to one of the city's great sons Charles Grey the 2nd Earl Grey, formerly Prime Minister who oversaw the great reform Act of 1832. Also known for the tea named after him.
T. D.
Greys Monument stands in the heart of Newcastle at the top Grey Street, which leads down to the Quayside area and is noted for its wonderful architecture. Open to the public on a couple of days a year.
D. B.
The 'Grey' of the monument is Earl Grey - as in the tea.
The monument is useful as a landmark for asking directions. And it has plenty of room around it so that you can step back and admire it.
John Betjeman, the poet, is said to have described the long, curving Grey street that leads down from Grey's Monument as the prettiest in England.
It's still nice despite the descent into the lowest common denominator of the same shopfronts that you can see in any town in England.
However, just one street away there is a street of 1960s monstrosities - who let those be built? A horrible blot on the landscape.
R. C.
Great view.
Lots of stairs 😁
H. D.
Very amazing monument which truly dominates the skyline. I can't stop looking up at it. It is very useful if you are looking to get on the metro as the station is below it.
d. s.
A great meeting point with quick access to the metro as well as a nice stroll to many activities if you don't want to look at the monument itself.
S. P.
Beautiful landmark in the centre of city with great buskers always next to it, also right next to lots of shops, restaurants, coffee shops and has great transport links by bus, metro and train right near by
J. G.
If your looking at this thing in real life, yeah? Take a look around, the bloke on the top created it all, Newcastles very own Christopher Wren. Head over to the east of the monument for an info board on the entry way to the Metro. Alternatively, use the internet and discover why we're so smitten with the dude.
K. B.
Nothing special for me, but it was good to walk in the city centre.
C. M.
Very busy here but a great meeting place if you have planned to meet up with friends, lots of shops around and a metro station across the road
s. o.
Not an attraction that you'd spend more than 10 seconds and quick Instagram selfie at, looks ok and is next to Eldon square
S. L.
A beautiful monument as well as a beautiful place to see the city. Great people watching and right in the middle of all the hubbub of the shopping and eating areas!
D. C.
An important historic landmark, and a common meeting place for a night out. Christmas markets are held here every year.
S. B.
A really nice open square with such an impressive tall monument. Great meeting place as you can't miss it!
M. H.
So much going on at the weekend, music cafes and restaurants and bars. Great area for a wander or just to sit down and watch the world go bye.
C. A.
Close to metro and bus station and the fact that its is quite central and easy to spot makes this an excellent meeting spot.
Occasionally open for trips to the top
A. C.
It's in the city centre, there is a lot of shops and restaurants/pubs in the area. Beautiful monument and a good place to visit
E. A.
This corner is very nice, surrounded by buildings in Georgian style. This is a good meeting point, as it is very central and recognizable.
A. T. F.
Lovely city
L. E.
The guy up top is a frickin legend, Charles Grey, Prime Minister 1830-34 who's government saw the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. I climbed it when I was 6ish and found it to be very well built.
I. L.
The great thing about monument is that getting the bus is not an issue... there is also a massive amount of shopping to be done there as well
N. P.
Great place except for the fact that unless you wanted to see the monument itself, you wouldn't notice it because it's that tall.
L. v. M.
This monument doesn't have anything special, but it is like a centre and great place to meet with a nice view through the centre of the city.
C. D.
Nice little area, easy to use as a meeting point and can go up the monument sometimes, good veiws from the top
H. D.
Famous monument. Quite tall. Crowded usually. Busy around. Good to see. Nice spot for tourists.
B. B.
Not what it used to be but still a central meeting place for mates, buskers playing people everywhere what you expect from a busy city centre, However recent Left Wing political ideologys are being shoved in your face and down your throat in an almost aggressive fashion meet not what i need or want when im just out chilling with mates.
V.
The very heart of the city. Vibrant place full of people. Nice architecture, plenty of shops.
А. Р.
Great place. Good surroundings. Good restaurants and bars. Beautiful architecture. A must be seen in Newcastle.
T.
One of the main Landmarks of Newcastle located in the city centre. Essentially our version of Nelson's Column.
k. m.
Does what it's meant to stays still, although you might have to fill out 5 protest sheets and get stopped by someone trying to get you to donate to charity, but there is usually a busker to keep you entertained
E. D.
Fantastic to feel the city vibe. If you get a chance to climb to the top, I definitely recommend it for the view.

It's about as big as you can get and if you can find a day when it's open it's got the best views in the whole of the city
A. B.
Not very special because it's just a statue but this is the man who received tea from the Chinese and then named it after himself (Earl Grey). Just a fun fact.

Nice enough, but not much more than an interesting sight to see. Once you've seen it, spent a few minutes taking a picture or something there's not much more to it.

Newcastle ist eine schöne alte Stadt. Die Rundfahrt lohnt sich. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir die Millennium Bridge. In recht übersichtlichen Stadt bekommt man alles, was das Herz begehrt. Pubs, Shopping und viel zu sehen.

(Translated) One of Newcastle's most famous landmarks is the Menument metro station, and next to it is the Menument shopping complex, as well as high-end shops, cafes and restaurants. The square is known for its artistic performances, especially on Saturdays and Sundays, and it is the place where everyone goes to relax, usually mass events, demonstrations and speeches under the monument. Entry to the monument and ascent to its summit can be done by registering in the waiting list with Newcastle Municipality, the ticket value is currently £5.

(Translated) Amazingly tall monument. The monument is so high that the image of the person it was set up for is barely visible. Or is this deliberately done .... The monument can even be climbed via an internal narrow staircase with a great view over the city. Unfortunately, this is only possible a few times a year. Ask for more information at the tourist office. You may be lucky and become one of the few "happy few" who have done this!
(Original)
Verbazendwekkend hoog monument.
