Reviews of Hatton Gallery
R. H.
Came up from Somerset to see the Andy Warhol exhibition such a thrill to see he's masterpieces on Display and free of charge .
Excellent art gallery with extremely friendly staff.

A fantastic collection of pop art. Very friendly gallery staff as well. Well worth the visit.

Very helpful polite staff. The exhibits took me back to previous visits to Newcastle's galleries as far back as 1973. A pleasant trip down memory lane.
Poptastic time.

First time here to see the pop art exhibition. Will keep an eye on what's coming up because I will definitely go back!

Roy Lichtenstein exhibition was well worth a visit. On the day I went it was pouring with rain so the gallery was very quiet. Plenty room to view the pictures from a distance and get up really close too. The booklets you could pick up to read about the works were excellent. There to pick up and read as you went round. Strangely nobody else did!
And remember there are toilets in the basement if needed if the ground floor ones are busy.

Great exhibition of pop art on currently. Easily accessible.

Amazing gallery that is a real hidden gem but easy to find from Haymarket metro, just head towards Newcastle University. Something for everyone from iconic art such as Francis Bacon and Lichtenstein to up and coming artists many who are local. I am a regular visitor and always enjoy visiting the gallery.

A very interesting exhibition of pop art. Friendly guides.

It depends a lot on the exhibition that's showing. I went to the Roy Liechtenstein show which was brilliant and very well presented as are all the shows here. The gift shop is very well stocked as is the students shop. You can find some good bargains there.
M. L.
A good university gallery space. Good shop too. The shows were a mixed bag. I thought that the links between artists (Ellen Gallagher and Fancis Bacon// everybody else and Kurt Schwitters) felt a bit forced.
C. S.
Lovely gallery. Would have liked a little more information about the artwork.

Medium-sized gallery in the heart of Newcastle University. Recently redeveloped. Interesting exhibitions. The centrepiece of the collection (partly because it's too big to move) is Kurt Schwitter's Merzbarn - a collage of materials & firms built into the wall of a barn.

Always interesting art to see. Friendly staff. Take a portable seat from reception if you're not good at standing. All free... of course. Visit it on the way back to Barras Bridge from a hospital appointment

The gallery is a maze of rooms filled with art displays and is clearly worth a visit which deserves quite a long time to embrace the whole ambiance.

Small gallery easy access

It's not far from the city centre of Newcastle. It is good way to learn about different artists as well as some of the art work done by some of art students from the university of Newcastle since it is on the university of Newcastle campus site.

for Kurt Schwitters, Merzbau sculpture environment, de only surviving piece (of 3) that still exists, painstakingly moved here in '66 from de sticks of Cumbria. mind-blowing y'all!
J. D.
The installation is a joke but the pictures are interesting. I don't 'get' Francis Bacon. I loved the fact that there was nobody else there,. the silence was deafening.

Art gallery inside the University of Newcastle. Has a monthly-ish turn around of "quality" art exhibitions. Well worth a visit.
I. W.
Very varied exhibits, free entry, lovely building, what's not to like ?
A. M.
Nicely refitted and a hidden gem, could do with a bit more publicity as it was empty. People are possibly reluctant/unsure about access to university based galleries and museums?
D. G.
Really knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Helpful from the moment you enter
S. G.
Excellent displays and facilities. Merzbarn is world class permanent exhibition.
D. H.
Attended the Out of Place opening last night and it was fantastic. A myst see exhibition.

Friendly helpful staff,a lovely shop but disappointed by lack of exhibits and empty galleries.

Fabulous exhibition space, I will make it a regular haunt from now on

Great space, especially for a university gallery. Nevermind about that Kurt Schwitters though.

Great visit

University of Newcastle exhibition space and gallery. Hosting regular exhibitions of works that vary in style, size and period. The highlight is often the annual Fine Art degree shows in June and July. Exhibiting a dizzying array of contemporary art from new artists across a range of disciplines. The gallery itself is well set out with small shop, toilets and staff to answer queries. Not a huge space but perfect for an afternoon visit. Home to the internationally significant Merzbarn by Kurt Schwitters, the only permanent exhibit in the gallery.
