Reviews of Laing Art Gallery

The Laing Art Gallery has something for all ages. There's a cafe which is large, light and airy. There appeared to be art facilities for families with children to have hands on experiences. There were ceramic and glass displays, as well as art in many mediums. I was particularly pleased to see two Lowrys. The gallery is filled with historic and modern art. I particularly enjoyed the historic pictures of Newcastle. The goods for sale in the two shops were exquisite, interesting and varied.

We had a really lovely visit to Laing Art Gallery. I am in a wheelchair and the lift was not working on the day we visited but the staff were super helpful, they helped me, my partner and three children access the gallery through the back entrance using the staff lift. Nothing was too much trouble and all the staff made our children feel very welcome and spoke to us with a smile.
The Artwork and photography exhibitions in the Gallery are really lovely, full of information and definitely worth a visit.
Highly recommend this place!

Really peaceful atmosphere, a great selection of art work, the staff are super friendly and there's a fab cafe too. Could easily spend a few hours here to get a break from the busy city!
S. O.
A varied and enjoyable art collection. Free to visit too!! Well worth an hour or two of anyone's time.

Art gallery in Central Newcastle that showcases a varied collection of art works of different styles and periods. Really enjoyed the collection of watercolours.

I visited here last week and found the gallery to be very pleasant. The building is spacious and has a really peaceful feel to it. It was quieter than I expected it to be but that allowed me to feel I could explore at my own pace.
I enjoyed the photographs of the local shipyards but my favourite was the painting The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by John Martin particularly the way it was displayed. There is a nice little cafe here too where I ended the visit with a cuppa and a scone.

I went to see the current special exhibition "Challenging Convention" which showcases the work of four successful women artists painting in the early 1900s. These women challenged the conventions of their day to become respected painters. This exhibition is worth seeing, but I found the permanent collection, with some fabulous oil paintings, even more impressive.
But the greatest surprise and unexpected highlight for me was the exhibition of black & white photographs taken by Chris Killip in 1975/76 of the Shipbuilding and its community on Tyneside. Chris said he sensed that the industry here would not last and set out to capture it for posterity. As a student at Newcastle in the late 70s, and subsequent auditor at Smiths Dock, these photos resonated with me.

Lovely place to visit, enjoyed looking at exhibition of Swan Hunters shipyard,+ excellent portraits done by famous artist, will we be back for when exhibition of Lindisfarne Gospels arrive
R. H.
Excellent art gallery loved the photos showing the ship building on the Tyne and rapid decline in the 70s unbelievable would recommend

Great free gallery in central Newcastle-upon-Tyne with large collection of sculpture and paintings on permanent display. Beautiful building housing galleries with paintings from medieval to contemporary times. Café serving hot drinks and light meals. Gift shop and toilets available. Exhibition space for visiting collections and new pieces. Overall the gallery is impressive but a very mixed range of pieces on display.
P.
Always love a wander around this gallery. The main gallery is free to enter with a modest charge for special exhibitions.
There are some stunning and surprisingly famous paintings here tucked away here.
There is also a decent cafe.
A. R.
One of the cities hidden gems, well worth a visit. Has a great cafe and gift shop as well
F. M.
An eclectic collection of paintings. Worth a visit to see Holman Hunt's "Isabella and the Pot of Basil" and the permanent photographic exhibition of Chris Killip's work recording the last days of the shipyards on the Tyne "Last Ships" There are two shops selling a nice variety of silks, ceramics, jewelry, books and art materials but the cafe is a tired and dispiriting place and too expensive for the quality of fare. I chose the least unappetising cake from a miserable selection and it was as dry as dust. Otherwise a reasonable afternoon visit.
K. P.
Such an interesting gallery with a cafe and one floor of free exhibits. Great shop too. All orientated to the North East.
T. D.
Very interesting gallery with paintings by J.W. Waterhouse, Harold Knight, Stanley Spencer, Burne-Jones and Duncan Grant. Also paintings by artists who are not well known but whose work is excellent. Admission is free.
L. T.
Lovely helpful staff. Children's room got very busy sadly so I took two 2 year olds to look at the art. They liked it. Especially the cat, a dog, and a pottery cow x
K. H.
We did a workshop with Victoria and she was so lovely, welcoming and great with our children l.

The Laing Art Gallery has to be one of best free things to do while in Newcastle. Outside, the building is a fun mixture of urban art and modern architecture. The interior of the building is stunning, designed in a mixture of Baroque and Art nouveau.
The range of paintings and exhibits on display is pretty good. On the day I visited, much of the space upstairs was taken up with an exhibit of works by Glenn Brown. I quite enjoyed the contemporary take on more classical style of art in the main. I feel like I have to mentioned several pieces of what I think are contemporary take on Alexander and Bucephalus. If Glenn Brown’s intention was to elicit a reaction, then well done. Sadly, having a interest in classical history in the Hellenic Period just made me annoyed at seeing this pieces.
On the ground floor between the shop and the cafe is more local works of art including paintings of local subject matter. Plus exhibits of glassworks and metalworks linked to the industrial past of Newcastle.
Definitely worth a visit.

I was initially confused in one gallery which had a Pre-Raphaelite Burne-Jones painting next to a Frank Auerbach portrait. I then realised that it had been been grouped by theme and they were in a group of women, with a group of dramatic landscapes next to them and abstracts at the end of the gallery.
J. S.
The hang is great. I really liked the juxtaposition of paintings from different periods enabling you to make connections between them which aren't possible with a more conventional hang.
A. P.
Lovely art gallery with an exhibit of women's only art. Originally started with no art and relied on locals donating to it. Free to enter with a £5 suggested donation. Limited seating. Cafe on site with art in it too. Gift shop too
V. S.
The Watercolour exhibition was fascinating. A real mix of style and showing watercolour in a different light. Good value as well.
S. T.
By far one of my favourite art museums. It brings me a lot of memories from my childhood growing up in Newcastle. The paintings by John Martin are spectacular and a real gem within the gallery. Laing gallery is the core to experiencing the rich art culture of Northumberland.
L. A. A.
The gallery is a place of calm and beauty in the busy city centre of Newcastle, it also exhibits my favourite painting - Isabella and her pot of Basil by William Holman Hunt. The pre raphaelite artist famous for his painting The Light of the world.
V. J.
Really nice gallery built by the Scotsman Laing. Some very nice and interesting pieces. Including a Henry Moore sculpture and Lowry painting. Large busy cafe.
P. P. (. P.
Nice cafe. Good soup and freshly made sandwiches.
Not too busy weekday lunchtime.
Interesting variety of art.
A. R.
Great visit! Friendly staff informative and super experience overall. Surprised it took me this long to go here. Recommended.
F. V.
Absolutely it worth to visit, very good experience, nice place to enjoy art, I thought maybe that was bigger but it's fine.
L.
Visited here yesterday for the first time, beautiful building with interesting exhibits and the majority of it is all free. Would recommend.
A. S.
I had a really lovely experience here, and picked up some nice gifts from the shop!
L. J.
Great place to visit. Nice gifts available. Cafe very atmospheric.
H. R.
A good range of art styles from local artists. To improve further, make the café and shop more inspiring.
J. P.
Well worth a visit! Plus, the majority of the galleries are free!
M. W.
Good if you like traditional art. They have lots of teapots there at the moment for some reason. Not really my taste in art, but each to their own
M.
Amazing place! Beautiful paintings, photograohs, teapots and porcelain. Well worth a visit!
B. W.
The gallery has an interesting collection of paintings and sculptures. It's a very atmospheric place. I recommend it to everyone!
M. F.
I loved this art gallery. Starting from the beautiful building's architecture, the exhibitions, the shop and the café. Beautiful secret place in Newcastle that is a must. I still cannot believe that is free!
L. B.
Lovely art gallery, it's small but has a great display of local artists and the area's history of art. Also has a really lovely cafe with friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit, especially as it's free! :-)
S. T.
Free entry. Good collection of 19th century art. Often has a visiting exhibition at a small charge. Nice cafe.
A pleasant gallery which is just the right size to look around for an hour or two.
s. d.
Enjoyed Exhibition of four women artists and was doing a project there.
Didn't get to look around the rest yesterday but it is a fabulous building and Art Gallery. I'll be back to spend time viewing more of it the next time I come.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because in the cafe,at 12.30, had run out of lots of things in, not a huge menu.
They'd run out of soup, of tuna (for both the sandwiches and the baked potato, run out of brown bread, run out of sour cream for the bean chilli with the baked potato, no cream for it or plain yogurt. And I don't know what else? And only 1 member if staff on the counter making the different coffees, serving and taking payment. We had to clear our table before we could eat.
Not enough staff.
I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't been for wait, and running out of so much so early on.
It is a fabulous Gallery though.
L. F.
Excellent art gallery. A good mix of artists to get the creative juices flowing.
M. W.
Great gallery with stunning paintings.and friendly staff.
M. E.
Really lovely history of Newcastle in watercolours exhibition. Shame cafe wasn't serving hot food.
L. F.
Lovely museum and a great play area for little ones.
K. M.
No food in cafe except cake at 1.25pm on a Saturday! Not got to pictures yet hope they make up for it.
A. M.
Free. Interesting. Thanks
s. 3.
A fine Gallery covering a range of art periods/schools. Never packed when I've been. It's free, do try and leave a donation.
Good coffee shop too.
B. Y.
Enjoyed my visit to the art gallery loved the photos 📸 of the last ships 🚢
T. K.
This is simply, a wonderful gallery. With lots of variety, Pre Raphaelite art, local seascape and landscape artists and great displays of our silverware history, our famous glassware of the Beilby family and of course Thomas Bewick, artist and woodcarver. We are so lucky to have such a brilliant gallery to visit.
M. S.
Nice spot
M. P.
The WOW watercolours and Challenging Convention exhibitions were fantastic. But the trouble with Covid and small galleries is there was nothing but a catalogue for the pictures. I really wanted a "Gabriel in St Lucia" print. Not to be, so I'll just have to keep going back. 🌈👏👏
A. C.
A good selection of paintings, sculptures and other exhibits, free to view, in addition to special exhibitions for which you have to pay.
The photos are from the exhibition, Portrait of An Artist, on until 26th February 2022.
a. h.
I always pop in when visiting Newcastle. Excellent collection that includes, among others, Lowry, Landseer and a couple of pre Raphaelites.
K. T.
Some very interesting paintings showing the importance and development of the River and coastline near Newcastle!
J. J.
Visited the Victoria and Albert watercolours exhibition and enjoyed it very much. Excellent value as there are lots of paintings on display. Well set out with plenty of room between the exhibits which made it very easy to get close up and appreciate the detail. Catch it while you can - it won't disappoint.
C. H.
Amazing place. Completely free. I would defiantly recommend.
P. C.
Really liked this place, particularly the way that all of the wide ranging collection was displayed all together rather than broken up into periods as they are in most galleries. Some great stuff here, only shame that they didn't sell many postcards of their best pieces.
S. M.
I found this Art gallery interesting and easy to look at with readable information for each painting . The staff were friendly and the coffee shop an Oasis of calm in a busy city
J. M. S.
Amazing exhibition and beautiful place!
A. C.
Took granddaughter who has just done some art in year 5primary school
P. A.
Fantastic art gallery. First visit in over 40 years and it's even better than it was then. It was very good then.
J. S.
Great gallery, has great and friendly staff and atmosphere. Has a friendly group of locals who are the 'friends of the laing' who donate to the laing gallery and help the gallery choose the exhibitions you see today.
Also, events catered for by Totally Delicious (January 2020 to date) for events such as weddings and meetings alike. Overall good place to visit and a small cafe for a bite to eat, from sandwiches, jacket potatoes and selection of paninis.
See menu for details and prices in the cafe.
G. H.
Well worth a visit for anyone visiting Newcastle. A wide variety in the gift shop with some books I've never seen anywhere else. Some amazing paintings that show some amazing talent. The cafe is also great. Staff are great and the cakes are that good one slice is not enough. You can easily spend over two hours here and the time does go quick.
D. P. L.
Selection of art from local artists and also based on the historical themes that influenced the region. Had an animated room with a painting with light and sound effects.
S. T.
Went to rhe Chris Killip exhibition. Excellent
J. J.
Amazing beautiful building with internationally renowned art work. The Laing has got better and better over the years. Temporary exhibitions are much cheaper compared to other venues around the country. Staff are friendly and helpful too. Plus the added bonus of a gift shop that is worth visiting. You will find gifts that you can't get elsewhere.

I've visited the gallery several times with my little one (toddler). Fantastic playroom that we both enjoy - books, dress up, trains, toys, tea set etc. We've also been to Little Artists here which is fab - directed painting and art discussions (as well as biscuits!!). Highly recommended
M. E.
Great little gallery, a good range of work and easy to get to.
A. P.
Great Portraits exhibition and Works by Women on Paper so do go it is a real treat. Friendly staff. Nice cafe and bookshop and specialist designer craft shop. Free admission bar special exhibitions.
G. S.
Really interesting gallery. The ground floor is dedicated to local artists and manufacturers and is a fascinating look at unknown (to me) painters.
The portrait gallery is grouped by theme and the main gallery has some great pictures, Holman Hunt, Burne Jones and a fantastic Martin - "the Bard". Some of the hang is inspired - Gauguin over a Constable? Perfect as a contrast of two pastoral scenes.
Add the very welcoming lady at the front desk and my visit was perfect.
K. C.
very good art gallery to visit.
also strongly recommand 'little artists' for kids
S. S.
The Laing Art Gallery is well worth a visit if you admire the history of Northumberland.
The entrance is free and some of the areas you visit have paintings, by local artists, of the people who toiled all over this county many years ago. Next to the pictures are explanatory notes.
Please note that special shows in the first floor galaxy can be subject to an entrance fee.
There are two areas where various memorabilia are sold to keep, or present, to friends and family.
There are many areas to see and an area where you can buy food and drink and admire the glass works and pictures. Sculptures can be admired down the middle of the walkway in the cafe.
A very good afternoon for us both with so much to learn from the information we admired.
A. V.
I hadn’t been here for several months so I thought it time to revisit. All my old favourites are there mixed with a number of new paintings seen today for the first time. An interesting exhibition of photographs of The Last Ships was a new temporary display. I’ll likely come back again in a few months time. A great regional gallery and certainly worth visiting or revisiting as a local or if you are new to the city.
r. j.
3 weeks back I went , because of lack of time i was unavailable to explore it. And the first impression was not that good I didn't found anything but only restaurant. But last day I visited again and found some amazing paintings that was really great to see. And for one painting they given light and sound effects that really nice .
G. B.
A beautiful place for refreshments too.
L. G.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a well managed one way system and we didn't need to book in advance. We had a lovely hot chocolate in the cafe and enjoyed looking at all the art.
N. Q.
Love visiting this place! Has so much history on people who lived here or just decided to use the north east as there inspiration. There are some beautiful pieces ❤ also there is a small childrens area that you can go into, it has several seats to relax/feed baby and lots of toys and books for the kids to get involved in, always head here when in town.
A. M.
The Laing has to be one of my favourite places in the north east. The building itself is stunning, with some gorgeous architecture inside and out. The range of paintings on display is always great, and when I lived closer to Newcastle I liked to try and visit the special exhibits (the Alice in Wonderland one was great!). Definitely worth a trip!
D. B.
Great place to go. Stunning gallery
I. M.
One of the great people's galleries of the UK. Challenging Convention is a superb exhibition of female artists. Great art in a great building.
Y. G.
Excellent place to visit, young and old. The staff were amazingly helpful, my husband is in a wheelchair at the moment. Exhibition was very interesting. Cafe was out of sausages, but the bacon was great. Great little cafe, meals, little treats etc;
J. g.
Personally I enjoyed looking at the different pieces of art however just having one random artist change every so often isn't enough.
I was working with an autistic boy the day I visited. The staff doing the work shop were good and accommodating keeping the children interested but one in particular was quite rude around the gallery to me and another member of staff I was with. He told us to get our things of the exhibits and not to touch them (bluntely) when the things that were on the exhibit belonged to the lady doing the workshop.
M. D.
Went to the under 5s play area. It's a really lovely space which is safe for my little one to explore. Good range of toys for different ages. The cafe is just next door and is really reasonably priced for lunch/coffee/cake. We'll definitely be back.
C. F.
Definitely a must-see if you are in the area. Not only is the gallery free, but its filled with many unique pieces that you would not find at a basic art gallery. It's not the biggest art gallery, but it allows you to spend an adequate amount of time while being able to appreciate the pieces. We didn't check out the exhibition you needed to buy tickets for, but the majority of the gallery that was free is definitely somewhere I would go back to!
J. B.
I love the exhibits and the gift shops
I used to really like the food in the cafe but on the last visit was very disappointed with the food. Looks like there have been major changes and not for the better. However the staff were very helpful and the loose leaf Ringtons tea was lovely.
Will go again but just have the tea and eat somewhere else.
Very sad about this. Hope the food improves.
p. s.
Always good to visit.
It may be small but you can always find something to see. What's more its free. Just put some money in the box on your way out. Or visit the shop and spend some money.
j. o.
Always interesting. Free to enter and good exhibitions of art, not as good as the London art galleries obviously but quiet and peaceful. A good cafe with great cards for sale that match every occasion with copies of some classic paintings. A good book and gift shop.
K. S.
Have never really been around the gallery, I take my eldest to the children's play room. Decent sized room which has recently been re-themed as a circus, has some cool circus dress up and toys, a wooden big top house in the corner which can fit about 5/6 kids in. Books, wooden train set etc... Also
P. R.
This Gallery is a must if one is interested in art, plenty of items to suit all artistic tastes.
D. P.
Good art gallery displaying both permanent works and hosting travelling exhibitions. Really nice tea room as well. Free entry however some speciality exhibits may incur additional fees.
S. L.
Perhaps he best thing about the Laing is actually it's size as you don't feel jaded by the time you've seen little more than a small fraction of the exhibits, yet there's still enough here to interest most people and indeed some of the works are truly stunning. The café is also a very nice place to meet up for a cup of coffee or bite to eat, and where you know you'll not have trouble finding a table or fight your way through crowds of people. Overall a perfect place to while away a few hours.
G. N.
Good and quite varied collection with a nice cafe too. Definitely worth a visit.
T. W.
Very helpful staff pity wasn't a plan with what display was where
I. S.
I always love visiting the Laing Art Gallery and the one - way system not only adheres to COVID rules, it also makes it easier to see the art!
N. R.
Nice selection of traditional art like painting and some sculpture, more contemporary and interesting art is in the payed section
J. B.
I had a great time walking around the gallery with my 8yo enjoying the vivid creations of Glenn Brown along with the regular collection. An hour wasn't long enough and we'll be back to see more of the local artwork in the Northern Spirit exhibition. I'm so pleased that we have this gem of a gallery right in the middle of Newcastle.
A. M.
Cute little gallery to have a look at. Nice pieces of artwork and friendly staff.
A. M.
Absolutely fantastic. Great art work on display. Especially Chris Killips excellent 'the last ships' photo collection.
J. G.
A stunning building and a stunning gallery, you'll find many a piece in here that will catch your eye. A big hitter with the local school and college excursions it often features art from serious contemporary A/B listers. It's fantastic for perusing as well, and it has a nice little cafe to round your trip off in, as all galleries do. It's free entry, so its definitely worth a look or you're in town!
M. W.
A nice gallery with a good variety of paintings and artefacts. Good size too - not too big or small.
B. B.
Love the Laing personally. Plenty history here and an interesti g range of changing exhibitions. I went to a virtual reality experience here 20 years ago and a new one last week. Both were great. Lots of classical pictures and history of the north east. Long may the Laing continue!
J. T.
The Laing art gallery has been in Newcastle for a very long time now, but I rarely go I there I must admit. I was wandering around the last time and purely by accident I found a little side room with an exhibition of photos of the shipyards in Newcastle.
The photos were in black and white quite sad really, well bittersweet is probably a better way to say it. Because Geordies are very proud of our industrial heritage. Although it is sad that heritage is all it is. Even more sad for me as this has happened in my lifetime, I was born in 1975. The photos were taken in 1975/ 76 but that's just life I suppose.
W. K.
This is unusual: it has several tiers- a very leading shop with books and prints, cards etc, then next level, a gift shop with quality items, a spacious coffee shop with stained glass windows and upstairs a major exhibition with big name artists. An art emporium. Love it.
c. A.
Excellent gallery , much to see
F.
My only regret with the Laing was that I did not make more time for it. What a quiet haven this square and gallery is compared to nearby, jammed, Northumberland street. Stunning entrance, attractive looking cafe. Slightly confused by the "no photography" sign around the Henry Moore yet down the hall "please touch" the modern fossil sculpture. Why no photography? And is that everywhere? Occasionally I found the labelling a bit confusing compared to other galleries re which label related to which picture. These are small points though - will make it my first port of call next time.
M. W.
I've been to this gallery so many times, I should be sick of it, but I'm not. It always has something interesting and unique to surprise me with. It's a small gallery but the architecture is stunning and some of the exhibitions are well worth seeing.
J.
A good selection of art pieces with a grand cafe hall at the back
E. V.
I was very slightly disappointed by the Laing!
Given the size and importance of the city of Newcastle I had expected both more and more great art!
However it must be remembered that the philanthropic Mr Laing provided the empty building but not the contents. It was left to other eminent Victorians who begged, borrowed and, occasionally, pulled their wallets out to inhabit the space!
I hope and believe that the current special exhibition of water colours by, for and relating to Victoria & Albert has more to do with the bi-centenary of Victoria's birth than a total imagination & aspiration breakdown by the director and trustees!
It's a shame that the representative of the friends of the gallery knew so little about it but was, nevertheless, prepared to disseminate inaccurate information!
Ignorance is entirely forgiveable; talking rubbish is not!
It's also a shame that the excellent soup was served with a stale bread roll!
C. C.
So near to the Great North Museum - but completely different. The Facebook account has events posted to tempt you. But for free you really cannot go wrong 😎 and the beautiful Newcastle University campus to wander round and perhaps a cuppa at Northern Stage over the road.
J. S.
I popped into here last Sunday as it was pouring out. It’s not my fave art as I prefer medieval pieces but it’s a good way to spend a half hour. The free collection is not very large. Some art and some glassware/textiles. The pre-Raphaelite art is particularly lovely. There is a cafe and whilst I wanted to know the hot veg dish of the day it didn’t seem to be on offer despite being on the menu.
J. M.
Brilliant display plus John Martin pictures that blow you away
A. M.
Galleries are nice. My kids liked the renovated play area. There are many beautiful items in the shop. I like the family bag that was available at the reception with all fun educational materials.
V. H.
Grew up with this gallery, went to see my old favourite Isabella and the pot of Basil. Great gallery although small when there is an exhibition on. Sadly it had just finished so not much to see.
C. R.
Very interesting gallery with plenty of paintings, pictures and artifacts from around the region. And mostly free apart from their special exhibitions which are well worth the modest entry fee.
J. B.
It's a regional art gallery so not full of masterpieces. However, a great collection all the same and well worth visiting. There is the obligatory cafe which had some great food and good coffee.
A. M.
Heard the Whistler exhibition had opened and HAD to take a look!! Absorbing insight to another artist who challenged Victorian art sensibilities. The section I especially liked was where the curator brought out Japanese old masters to illustrate where Whistler got some of his inspiration from...And the mist...over the Thames and the North Sea... And his etchings were masterful, each line considered.
As always a treat to visit the ancient halls of The Laing, with its very pleasant and helpful staff...
P. A.
Interesting selection of exhibits including many depicting the North East life and times. The gallery has a relaxing environment which enhances the whole experience.
T. W.
Tremendous quality; so brilliantly curated
S. L.
Interesting collection of local art with good short descriptions next to paintings often giving surprising snippets of information. Nice quiet cafe and a good shop with a wide range of arty and quirky items available.
R. M.
Went to see the Chris Killip exhibition. It's small but great. Wish there had been more background information about him and why he was considered so special.
H.
Wonderful gallery! Loved the Glenn Brown exhibition, with John Martin and Grimshaw paintings which was free entry. Enchanted garden exhibition (£10)had some great Edward Burne-jones and lots of interesting paintings, worth a visit. Companion guide £5 and 10 postcards for £1, great value!
k. q.
I do like this gallery but I was quite dissatisfied with the Alice in wonderland exhibition, maybe because I had the idea there would be art works based on r his theme, and it was mostly about the history of the story, writer and girl it was based on, which was very interesting also, the rest of the building is fantastic and free! But after a couple of visits there's no point going back as it's quite small
L. B.
A really warm and friendly place. The staff couldn't have been nicer. Only saw the ground floor this time but will return.
D. H.
A typical local Art gallery in many ways, though it is quite small and unless you're a real enthusiast you probably won't be there more than about 3-4 hours. The John Martin paintings are a highlight of the permanent collection. Free, which is nice.
M. H.
Very well presented gallery with a permanent collection and changing exhibitions. Airy and spacious cafe.
R. L.
The Laing is free to visit but holds different exhibitions for which a fee is usually payable. Details of exhibitions are on the website. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I visited on a weekday when there happened to be a school visit - the children were extremely noisy the entire time and so I decided not to stay and try the cafe, although it did look to be a reasonable size and serve hot and cold food at reasonable prices.
A. L.
Just off Northumberland Street, it's a great gallery with a lovely shop selling art gifts and jewellery. The cafe is spacious although the menu is not large. It's a regular haunt!
J. C.
The Laing has a number of good pieces on display and holds some quality exhibitions throughout the year. I can't help feeling that the gallery falls somewhat short of its potential and could do with a more proactive approach to periodically varying its content.
C. M.
A lovely small gallery just off one of the main Newcastle streets. A number of static displays, with visiting temporary displays on offer. Currently a set of black and white photos from the 70s documenting the last glory days of shipbuilding in wallsend. There's a small cafe in beautiful art deco surrounding, and a modern entry / shop where you can pick up momentos and longer explanatory books. I've always enjoyed it, typically 45 mins for me, but a longer look at each piece could see over an hour.
J. M.
The biggest part of the gallery is free to enter. They have a quite nice collection of various art
D. M.
definitely worth a visit, lots of art new and old plus it's free
F. D.
Wish I had more time to explore but was in for a wedding - very interesting wedding venue!
J. A.
Some lovely paintings particularly pre- raphelites but that's just my opinion. Did not like the Paul Nash exhibition too depressing pictures seemed to lack something color? Life?
M. C.
We went for the Alice in Wonderland exhibition. Loved it, and staff was so helpful and nice! Happy to tell you fun info, let us take pictures, try on costumes, so great. They go out if their way and beyond to make a full experience for their visitors
L. G.
Visited Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne. Painting and Artefacts offering the possibility to appreciate the atmosphere of the North from an artistic point of view.
Free admission.
I advise to enjoy a crispy bun with warmed bacon and cheese at the cafeteria: delicious!
R. P.
The Gallery as always a delight. Excellent small exhibition De Morgans. Covid arrangements fine. Staff as always courteous and helpful.

Top quality exhibitions. Watercolours from the Royal collection- not really my thing - & the Laings own. Excellent permanent displays too. Do not miss Chris Killip's time travel photos from the days of big ships building on the Tyne.
D. R.
I've enjoyed many visits here, there is always something new and interesting, the gallery have a lovely collection of Turner watercolours. Children are also catered for, there is plenty to keep children occupied and interested. There is also a tea room where you can buy tea and cakes, sandwiches et cetera.
R. S.
It seemed undirected - we walked in and wandered around without seeing any obvious pathway to take in order to cover the whole gallery. It was a cold day so it was nice to get into somewhere warm and free...
H. M.
Great exhibition on Paul Nash, although you do need to book online (free). The explanations and information boards are superb, bringing the artist and his environment to life and explaining why and how.
Definitely visit if near Newcastle
A. L.
A small but excellent collection of paintings that show the life in the North.
It i s such a pity that the gift shop did not have any postcards of Glenn Brown's paintings.
I highly recommend a visir.
S. W.
Popped in for 30 minutes, great exhibits of local artists in free galleries. My favourite painting in the whole building is "The Stone Pickers"
K. B.
I love this art gallery, a little of every genre of art. Quality art in a quality building, with a tea room what could be better.
K. M.
Great free gallery, the paintings by local artists are worth seeing and they also have a great collection of local glass through the ages; just a shame the cafe provides industrial type food, from a large french multinational (Sodexo Prestige), instead of local cheese and other products.
c. w.
great space in a good location. permanent collection varied and interesting. temporary exhibitions can be expensive (£12). worth an occasional visit to see the free exhibitions.
P. W.
The temporary exhibition was good but the Laing's permanent collection was better. Nice to see it again after ten years. Staff as helpful and friendly as ever...obviously...they are Geordies!
A. W.
Some wonderful local art and not so local. Well worth a visit.
R. P.
Good range of art, including John Martin and pre-Raphaelites. Interesting exhibitions- I viewed the De Morgan exhibition of ceramics and paintings.
A. M.
Love the Laing. I usually go mainly to say hello to Isabella. Magnificent painting.
d. a.
Great place to find inspiration near Newcastle university. There is a corner for kids and gift shop.
L. M.
There is a great permanent collection accompanied by regular visiting exhibitions with some brilliant artists. A grand building which is excellent to explore and spend a few hours enjoying. A must visit on the Newcastle art gallery circuit.
S. B.
It's great! If you have an hour or two to kill in Newcastle town centre, you could do a lot worse!
Firstly, there were some great historical photos of the Wallsend ship yards, where Segendunum is now. That alone is a must for any modern history or sociology student.
Secondly, there are some really interesting artworks, sculptures and paintings. Each to their own in terms of whether you like them or not, but a diverse selection from classic to modern.
Thirdly, there's a great cafe! Get there early for a bacon stottie!
R. M.
A small but interesting collection. Focuses seem to be on pre-raphaelite artists, but there are other interesting pieces as well. Entrance is free, and they do sometimes have exhibits that have a fee.
C. B. (. m.
I had such an amazing visit along with a friend. We went to see "Exposed", which is made up of many nude paintings and photographs. It has famous people centre stage too ie Johnny Vegas, Yoko Ono, and Sting. Featured artists, Duncan Grant, Venessa Bell, Sam Taylor zjohnson, David Hockney and many more. It also has contravertial artist such as Tracey Emin and Giavanni Battista Lombardi, representing skulptured art, (Susannah from The Old Testament). Its available until March 19. I would say go, go, go
B. M.
Nice compact art gallery with usual add-ons (shop, cafe). Sits in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Free entry, but special exhibitions will cost. Well worth a look if you are in town.
S. G.
Nice free gallery with quite a few famous paintings such as Isabella and the pot of basil, and the destruction of gomorrah. Always fascinating to see these up close, and it's free to do so.
L. H.
Not as good as it used to be unfortunately, staff were lovely though!
F. N.
Delightful city centre gallery with the bonus of a Paul Nash exhibition. A touch pricey to view, but a good history of this important British artist. Local work excellent.
J. F.
Lovely place to visit and the sensory room is full of delights. However the place house is very low so when I was taking my child in she bumped her head.
G. B.
The Laing shop is the best place to find presents!
S. M.
Free entry (limited art on show) but charge applied for exhibitions. While I enjoyed the exhibition it was fairly expensive for what it was, and I was disappointed to be asked to pay £1 for a map.... I declined. Not too sure I'll return.
P. B.
Oasis of culture and calm in a busy city, nice cafe as well
D. P.
Free art gallery , mood provoking art from around the North East and a far . Floors of modern and old cultural art . Lowery on the first floor a must see . Quick visit or a couple hours may get you round . Huge silver ware to view and tea pots in the hundreds . Food and beverages available in cafe . Lots more to see look forward to seeing it properly . Parking all around town bring the right change £1.20 ,
J. F.
Really enjoyed the enchanted garden exhibit, I think it may be a little to expensive for a ticket if your no a member but I understand why you are charged so much, for insurance ECT. Could of spent all day in there just staring at the monet painting.
J. W.
A great art gallery in the centre of Newcastle with lots of kids activities.
P. S.
Great. Definitely worth a visit.
S. R.
A good gallery with a handful of British masterpieces and some excellent fine and applied art originating from Newcastle and the North East. Possibly the stand-out work is John Martin's "Destruction of Soddom & Gomorrah" - though this picture is currently displayed in a small space with a light show and sound effects which don't really do it any great favours and rather detract from the artist's mastery of creating the fiery effect in oil paint.
P. A.
A great gallery. Free entry to the main building. There are occasional exhibits with fees (eg Lindisfarne gospels). A nice relaxed cafe and even a toddler activity area.
j. b.
Lovely gallery with good shop and café. Free for most gallery but have to pay for exhibitions. Saw lindisfarne gospels here few years ago and lots of different exhibitions since .
H. W.
Great to see different paintings and pictures of the shipbuilding in Wallsend years ago
P.
Excellent art gallery. Staff were friendly and very helpful.
n. f.
Great gallery but not much on view at the moment.
S. M. (.
Excellent free gallery to walk around, loads of local history artifacts to see, I spent about 1 and a half hours in here, so many amazing pictures to look at.. I would definitely recommend going if in Newcastle.
m.
Free entry, decent facilities and wheelchair accessable. Pretty good. I dont know about the art though, I don't fully understand it haha. Art lovers might give it 5 stars. I loved the lil section about the north/newcastle though.
N. D.
A bit disappointing. Large areas taken up with paying exhibition, cafe, children's activity zones (no problem with last!).
Four galleries: watercolour (poor), 18/19th century (ok), 20th century/abstract (ok), North-East focused gallery (not bad).
Best bit: light and sound cubicle bringing a John Martin painting to life.
Toilets are clean, old-school and (importantly) open to anyone.
A. L.
I love it and I bought a book theree
A. P.
Fabulous attraction in the city centre. Wonderful for children and a great place to visit while out shopping, try it.
You won’t be disappointed. very impressed indeed. And so proud to have it here in Newcastle
J. B.
Fun and educational for all the family. Children's sensory room is excellent and the cafe offers a good selection of food and drink.
L. W.
First time visiting art gallery well set out came to see naked exposure really interesting, there was a smaller room showing black and white photos of swan hunters ship building and the people living in the area at the time 1973 - 1976, on the ground floor they have a café with gift shop, assistants working there where very friendly and helpful, there is also a room for kids to play, another must see is all the teapots and cups etc very eccentric looking and delicate these are behind glass case's towards café, 😊
H. “. P.
Even though it was way too hot was lovely seeing all the history there really nice stuff they have
S. B.
Thank God for places like this. Art gallery free to enter. Reminds you you are human
J. J.
Enjoyable visit, lots of new works. Nice cafe and shop.
M. W.
Free entrance to a quality gallery close to the city centre with paintings such as Turner, Nash and Lear. They also have a nice café with competitive prices.
S. A. T.
The Laing is such a wonderful place to spend the afternoon. It showcases some really interesting pieces of local art, the cafe is great too.
P. W.
The temporary exhibition was good but the Laing's permanent collection was better. Nice to see it again after ten years. Staff as helpful and friendly as ever...obviously...they are Geordies!
K. S.
Have never really been around the gallery, I take my eldest to the children's play room. Decent sized room which has recently been re-themed as a circus, has some cool circus dress up and toys, a wooden big top house in the corner which can fit about 5/6 kids in. Books, wooden train set etc... Also
J. R.
Excellent underutilised space
D. L.
I love the free play room for my little one and we both enjoy a cup of tea and a snack in the cafe afterwards.
t. R.
Everything fantastic! Several brilliant exhibitions. Shop with interesting items. Excellent cafe. All set in a beautiful building.

One of Newcastle's finest galleries and right in the centre too. If you are interested in art it's an essential on your itinerary.
V. G.
Some great works of art here just a shame so many galleries are shut at once so made for a very short visit.

I was a bit disappointed about it. Not much to see, shopping areas were bigger than actual gallery but still these few paintings were interesting and varied.

Chris Killips photos of Swan Hunter are excellent plus lots of local artists and scenes

Some good stuff but display cabinets in middle of gallery floor make it difficult to appreciate large paintings.
