M. B.A lovely walk along the South Tyne river and railway. You need to check days and times if intending to see the trains running. Parking on the road alongside the station in Alston. The path is hard stoned surface suitable for all, however not quite suited for wheelchair users as mentioned in some of the literature. Plenty to see and points of interest along the route.

P. L.We turned up after 3pm and were met with smiles and great service. I had a lovely beef baguette and my wife a chicken sandwich. They were fresh, full of flavour and made to order. Fabulous. We heard one of the servers say that they were actually closed, but with all these people looking for food and drink they decided to carry on! Love that attitude! I work in a busy seaside town in North Wales and our focus is always work hard during the season, because it pays you out of season!

P.We visited for breakfast at the weekend and can honestly say that we were blown away by the quality of the food (Turtle buns are amazing) Kim and Dug are really friendly and made a right fuss of our dog. We will definitely be returning and can't recommend this highly enough if you're passing through. Best food I ate all weekend!

I. D.Excellent narrow-gauge railway, set in beautiful countryside, close to the market town of Alston. Now running to the restored Slaggyford station, the return trip takes about 90 minutes and goes through some stunning scenery.
A day rover ticket, offering unlimited travel, costs a very reasonable £10; great value for money.
Good facilities at both stations, friendly, helpful staff, disabled access and dog-friendly too.
Revisit Aug 2022: The day rover ticket's been discontinued and the price has shot up to £16:50 for a return trip, a massive increase in just 4 years.

M. H.Really enjoyable train ride. The place isn't completely finished but the train ride is fully operational. It's a nice old steam train using tracks from an old mine. The train goes through very scenic countryside and is a very relaxing way to spend an hour or so.

M. B.A scenic heritage railway which runs on weekends and public holidays, but the station is open. "Hitchin's"; the cafe which is part of the station is open every day and that is a real delight - well worth a visit in its own right.

T. J.The train ride was a great run, it was around £27 for a family return ticket from Alston to Slaggyford. There is a cafe at the station but it's extortionate- £13 for 2 pieces of frittata that wasn't all that great😏. But its all run by volunteers. …

T. B.We had a quick look round the yard first, then drove to East Tanfield for a ride on the first train. At each end there were excellent display boards explaining the history. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the train brought back memories of train rides in the fifties. A great morning out!

C. E.It was like being a little girl again, riding on the railroad. Not a steam engine but a diesel, narrow gauge. The staff were brilliant, taking and having their photos taken with the children.
M. H.Pleasant journey with incredibly friendly and helpful staff but this is not a steam engine the size of a large locomotive and you have a choice of open carriage or covered/inside. Not quite what I was expecting and at £30 return for a family of 5, perhaps a bit (quite a bit) too pricey for what it was.
R. H.A reasonable ride over the five miles between Alston and Slaggyford. Plenty of parking at Alston and all of the volunteers working on the railway were helpful. There are currently no open facilities at Slaggyford.
A.Seemed a little expensive, but I suspect the running costs are high. When we visited there were only 3 trains a day, so worth checking the timetable. A lovely pootle up the valley and back. In April it's a great way to see the young lambs. There is an 'eye spy' sheet, kept our 9 year old entertained for a bit of the trip.
s.My wife and i had a trip on the tinsel train today and we very much enjoyed it ! The ticket included a coffee, good quality sausage roll and a mince pie blondie cake.
It was the first time i had been behind a steam loco burning wood and the smell was wonderful. The staff were friendly and the scenery lovely, we shall be going again when it warms up a bit !

A. C.My 8 years old was very happy with the train ride. It takes about 0.5hr each way with 15-25 minutes break to swap loco. The staff is lovely and very kind. Our dog was looking out at the sheep and pheasants and got snacks from staff too :-) Very tasty hot chocolate and brownies at the cafe and next to it is a small transport museum. I'm sure we will be back :-)

D. E.Happened upon this little treasure purely by accident. Set in beautiful countryside, this small rail museum is well worth a visit to pass a few hours. Rides can be taken on a steam train and you can browse the museum itself which gives a fascinating insight into the local history. There is a small wooden train track inside the museum for children, but to be honest, myself and two grown up children had a wonderful half hour designing our track. There are clean toilets, a small gift shop and cafe serving light refreshments and drinks.
On the same site is a small transport museum run by volunteers. A small entry fee is charged but all monies help to run the museum and restore the items within. Most definitely well worth a visit.

D.Every thing other than the cafe was still closed due to covid restrictions, which we called into after a lovely walk along the path by the railway line, nice pot of tea and friendly staff, the only thing that spoils the drive there on the A689 is the idiot motorcycle riders who think their on the T.T. races.
p. v.Had a ride on the steam train today, it takes about 25 mins to Slaggyford, 20 minute turn around and 25 mins back, social distancing was in place, they ran two open carriages and one closed carriage, currently its £15 each for a return ticket, the scenery is great with stunning views of the hills, the cafe at the station is currently closed due to self isolation but is due open next week 24th July, all in all it was a pleasant ride out into the country side.
R. C.Brilliant day out. Beautiful scenery and a very well put together railway. Needs extending to Haltwhistle though as the local transport leaves much to be desired. If you don't have a car you're going to struggle, although taxi rates are reasonable.

I was a bit disappointed to be over-charged in the gift shop, but I suppose that's not unusual when you have to rely on volunteers. At least the extra money went to a good cause! 😋 …

A. C.Excellent, we caught the train to Slaggyford with the dogs and walked back (6 miles). You follow the train line on a good level track, kids bikes and pram no problem. There is a small refreshments booth at Slaggyford and a great cafe on the main station in Alston, the bacon butty was excellent as was the coffee. Free parking at the station.

J. A.I remember way, way back to my youth actually seeing this railway when it was a branch line run by British Rail.
I was disappointed that British Rail, having decided to close this alleged uneconomic line, asked for a kings ransom to sell it to the Heritage Trust wanting to take it on.
Well the Trust didnot give up and this, now narrow gauge line, is the result of all their efforts.
The line runs from Alston Station to Slaggyford Station, a trip of approximately 5 miles.
Both stations have large car parks with room for coaches.
Both stations have excellent toilet facilities which are wheelchair friendly.
Unlike some attractions 🐕 dogs are not just welcome but actually you are encouraged to take them as part of your family. (And yes they are allowed on the carriages )
Wheelchair users alight the carriages by means of ramps.
The Crossings Cafe offers excellent value for money meals and snacks which you can eat in or out. Very good children's menu available and again reasonable prices charged.
Up to the 18th of July the attraction is open Tuesday's, Thursdays, Saturday's and Sundays. After that date, and up to September, the attraction is open 7 days a week.
Very good family day out with lovely views of the area and local shops selling local produce.

S. H.A very enthusiastically operated heritage narrow gauge railway which runs between Alston & Slaggyford a 35 minute journey through the beautiful local countryside. Alston Station is the terminus & workshop for the line with the engine & maintenance sheds at this location. The cafe on the station platform serves great meals & light snacks, plus beverages & cakes. All the staff are very helpful & make any visit a great experience.

a. b.This narrow gauge railway is well worth a visit. Based in Alston (England's highest market town) it is absolutely superb.
We took a party of members of the Gateshead Arthritis Support Group for a train ride and afternoon tea. Our welcome could not have been more friendly or the staff more helpful. The facilities at Alston station were excellent with level or ramped access to aĺl areas. The cafe offers a good selection of home cooked food at reasonable prices. Access to the train was on the level with ramps available to bridge the narrow gap between platform and train for wheelchair users or those with walking problems.
The return journey from Alston to Slaggyford takes 1.5 hours and passes through some beautiful scenery. A buffet car is available at Slaggyford where there is a 20 minute break.
On return to Alston we were served a delicious afternoon tea in a private room where more than ample provision had been made, in fact we were given doggy bags for those who wished to take some of the surplus home.
I have visited many preserved railways and along with my wife sampled afternoon teas in many different places, but this little gem of a railway has to rank among the best for its facilities, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

J. H.We regularly visit South Tynedale Railway with our four year old son and two year old daughter. The railway has benefited from the new extension to Slaggyford and the new station facilities including, toilets, ticket office and buffet car cafe, enhance the overall experience. However, we wanted to express our thanks to the volunteers and staff who make this railway really special.
Our journey down the line from Alston to Slaggyford on a fine summers day in July was going well. However, while standing on the rear carriage balcony, a slight gust of wind blew the favourite blue and white stripy hat from our two year old daughter's head and landed it in the cess next to the line. “My hat!” she exclaimed! What a CASTROPHY. What a CLAMITY...but...not to worry. After speaking to the Guard, Driver and Fireman at Slaggyford and establishing exactly where the prized garment had landed, the journey back to Alston was halted to allow the driver to climb down from the footplate and retrieve the garment and carefully hand it back to our daughter on the balcony of the carriage.
Having our daughter's favourite hat returned to her not only made her day, but also everyone else's on the train, as the whole coach load of passengers cheered and applauded!!! We doubt there are many railways what would halt a four carriage train with approximately 150 passengers on board to return a little girls hat.

M. G.Great for train enthusiasts n kids or anyone who wants a train journey through lovely countryside. Its a narrow gauge railway which has regular train journeys along the line to Slaggyford where passengers can get off n watch from the platform while the train readies for its return journey. There are special train journeys at Christmas when Santa Clause travels on the same train so children can meet him in person! There's also Thomas the Tank engine, and guards in uniform with whistle n flag. Kids will love it, especially the exterior viewing platforms at the end of the carriages. The trains are a bit rickety but that adds to the adventure. On the Alston platform there's a gift shop, this is where you buy your tickets. Also public loo's. Right outside the station there's the Hub museum. Its all well worth a visit.

V. W.Love love love this great piece of Industrial Heritage! It's something that everyone should experience. Great facilties ie: cafe, shop and the Hub museum is definatly worth a look around. Great viewing mezzanine in the engine repair workshop too.

J. H.Brilliant railway running from Alston to Slaggyford across pretty countryside. Excellent tea rooms at Alston with nice facilities. Alston has some nice gift shops and a railway museum. Update: there is also a nice little railway cafe at Slaggyford.
P. C.A great place to visit. Very pleasant cafe. The museum wasn't open when we visited but we had great service and reasonably priced food and drink.
