This was a very worthwhile tour of Newcastle Upon Tyne’s history! The Victoria Tunnels are part of its Industrial Revolution and World War History. We were guided around by Mal and his Wife Trish who gave us an excellent insight into these tunnels. They were very informative who gave us a sense of humoured approach but also a serious and sad side to these tunnels too. Well worth a visit if you are in ‘Toon’ ..👍
S. T.
Absolutely wonderful time! The tour guides, Pete and Graham were amazing and so informative. Would definitely come back! 😁

Definitely the most interesting tourist attraction I've experienced in Newcastle.
The guides we had were full of knowledge and more importantly a great ability to hold your attention and entertain when telling us the history of the tunnel.
There were stories of different events in the timeline of the tunnel, information on local history which was even tailored to where you were as you progressed underneath the city. There were opportunities for questions too.
It's definitely a learning experience and provides a great social history as you go. Loved it.

A different type of experience, we did a 2 hour tour. Please don't let me put you off going but we found this a bit daunting, for us 2 hours in a tunnel was a bit much.
Although the guide tried his best we felt he as struggling to keep our attention after all what can you say about a tunnel,it was used to transport coal originally, in the war it was used as a Air raid shelter.
For us we couldn't wait for it to be over, I am sorry but it did not rock our boat.
If you like tunnels it's for you .

If you're looking for something very different to do in the city then this is a great choice, and not weather dependent. I did the two hour tour which takes you upto the emergency exit at the top of Crawhill Road. There has to be a second exit (Health & Safety) and you can see where you were by walking up there afterwards and finding the yellow "square manhole cover" on the side of the pavement.
There are two histories to be told here. On the way up the Tunnel we learnt about the time when it was used as an air raid shelter during the 2nd World War, and what life was like here during that time. One person who had previously suffered from shell shock spent the whole of the war here. Blast walls were added to the original tunnel for protection during the war years.
On the way back down the Tunnel we learnt about what led to the construction of the tunnel, how it was constructed, and some of the mishaps that beset the tunnel during its operation. The tunnel was cleverly designed to move coal from the mine on the town moor to the waiting ships on the Tyne using a gravity system of Wagon transport.
Our two guides were excellent and very entertaining. Definately recommend this tour if you're looking for something different.

Great tour of a hidden gem from New castle's history. We did the 2 hour tour and it flew over. The guides were really engaging and offered a number of opportunities to ask questions. Their enthusiasm was infectious.
Highly recommended if you're visiting this magnificent part of the city but you'll need to book beforehand as it's extremely popular (and rightly so) Well earned five stars ✨

Informative and entertaining trip this hidden gem is a must see when visiting Newcastle. Two hours sped by as our guide Pete took us back in time, first to WWII and then to Victorian times. Great social history as you learn about the people who built the tunnel and those who used it and even those who's spirits may lurk there still.
M. R.
Lovely experience. Me and my wife enjoyed everything about the tunnels from it's rich history to it's intriguing architecture. We had a couple of wonderful guides in Pete and Bill who were entertaining and hilarious and were also very kind enough to accommodate the two of us even though we didn't pre book the tickets.
Definitely the best part of our trip to Newcastle. Would highly recommend it.
R. Y.
What a Brilliant, interesting, informative and fun experience!
We took the grandkids (who had bought the tickets for me for my birthday) and from start to finish we were expertly guided through the tunnel by two excellent guides John and Phil.
The history embraces two main periods, the Second World War and the mining history of the tunnel.
I personally was fascinated by the construction of the tunnel and the camels of all the historical characters involved. Oh, and the Ghost !
Highly recommended.

Our family group of 5 visited with another 6 or 8 on 20th Feb. The venue is rather off the beaten track but is very well worth the effort.
Our one hour tour was adequate to get a real taste of the history but real buffs might prefer to see more in the longer tour.
Our two volunteer guides Phil and Dave did a great job explaining the original building and purpose of the tunnel and its later use as a shelter during WW2.
The serious side of their presentation was interspersed with great humour and a real touch of atmospheric theatre.
Thoroughly enjoyable and an experience not to be missed.

Excellent place to visit in Newcastle. We were guided by Phil and John who made the experience really interesting and amusing too. Highly recommended.
G. A.
Excellent experience! Phil and John our guides where amazing, full of interesting facts and very funny with it too! A real must if your visiting Newcastle and want to know some of the history! Would recommend anyone to try the Victoria tunnel tour! Well done guys..we loved it! Thankyou x
P. N.
Very enjoyable and interesting experience. Dee and Trish were very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the tunnel and that came through in the tour. Would recommend for anyone wanting to learn more about the history of Newcastle and wanting to do something a little different.
R. W.
Excellent tour of a really interesting construction. We did the longer tour and got a short tour of the local area and history, too, which helped provide context for the tunnel. Andrew was a great tour leader, and Rory ably assisted. Highlight was the sad tale of Mr Coulson.
R. M.
This tour was amazing! The volunteer guides, Phil and John, really made the experience - friendly, funny, knowledgeable and oozing ethusiasm! I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do something a bit different while you're in Newcastle.
I. O.
The best tour we've been John and Phil make that experience even more attractive what a fantastic bunch of people.
Definitely recommend that 👌
J. B.
This tour was fantastic so much history in these tunnels enjoyed every minute. The tour guides were fantastic and new about the history very well. Thanks lads for an amazing time. Highly recommended.
m.
thoroughly enjoyed our tour and it was very informative - lots of interesting social history and told in a way that made it come alive. phil was friendly and charming and a great story teller.
We took the 75 min tour and found it the perfect amount of time and i wouldnt personally choose longer as a tourist due to there being so much info in 75 mins and it being a bit cold.
we also visited seven stories and had ice cream from dimeo and it was close to the bus stop back into town. i would just say that due to stairs and slopes in that part of the city i wouldnt recommend for those with mobility problems/wheelchairs/buggies.
C. S.
A fascinating trip through hidden Newcastle and and wonderful example of Victorian ingenuity! Phil and John were passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides, who regaled us with tales of the building of the tunnel, the experiences of those who worked in terrible conditions to make it safe, and the later use as an air raid shelter during WW2. Definitely recommended for anyone visiting Ouseburn, a humbling and educational experience.
R. P.
Excellent and informative tour of part of Newcastle's hidden history. The tour guides were friendly and engaging. The group I read work really enjoyed it.
T. T.
We were lucky to have kay and Pete as our tour guides. They are do knowlegable and have interesting stories to tell. Well worth a visit to these tunnels. We did the short tour, will do long one next time. Some benches along the way were helpful for our teen to rest.
J. W.
A fascinating and educational experience about the history of the tunnel, first as a coal
mine transporter to the Tyne, then as a shelter for 9,000 people a night during World War 2.
Phil and John were excellent and informed guides.
J. W.
Had a fantastic time on the 75 minute tour and would recommend it to everyone! Phil and John did a fantastic job of explaining the history of the tunnel and were very entertaining.
D. W.

Terrific experience, with great tour guides Phil and John. The tunnel itself has a fascinating history, brought to life by the guys. Excellent recommendation for the Tyne Bar as well. 👍

Was such a good day. Most people came in pairs, but I ventured alone. I did the 1 1/4 tour.
Our guide was very informative, friendly and was a really good guide. Was so impressed. Will be going back for the 2 hour tour with my son!
M. M. F.
A great trip into subterranean Newcastle. A great final trip in the city, Mal and Pete are excellent guides well worth a visit when you're in town.
5 Stars!!!

What a place to spend 2 hours on a rainy afternoon in November! Pete is a great guide who knows his stuff with regards to the history but he also made the time fly by with some interesting and quite sad stories. It's always nice to learn something new about your home town. I loved it!
L. M.
Lived in N E all my life but didn't know about this important piece of local history!. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very informative and our 2 x guides Iain and Peter were informative and entertaining when passing on the history of the tunnel. Will recommend this tour to anyone who asks about it....without qustion.
a. t.

L. M.
Had good fun on the tour. Pete and Graham were very informative and made it an enjoyable experience.
R. E.
An excellent hour spent in this fantastic tunnel. John and Phil were thoroughly engaging and told the history of the tunnel with enthusiasm and great drama that kept my 12 year old son captivated. My older son became claustrophobic and was kindly taken back to the surface to sit out the tour. PS we loved the ice cream shop recommended and are sure they must be on commission!
J. K.
Well worth a visit, a good tour on the local history. Volunteer staff very welcoming and their knowledge very good.
L. R.
Very good. The tour guides Sarah and Pete had great stories to tell.
j. b.
Very enjoyable 2 hours mostly spent way underground in a cold damp tunnel is not a sentence I would use a lot! But it's true🙂 our group of 8 met at the office and were taken on a walk to tunnel entrance which lasted about 30 mins and were shown places of interest around Ouseburn . Then hard hats on and torches in hand we descended into tunnel. Quite claustrophobic so be warned and at one point we all turned torches off and it was PITCH BLACK. Excellent guides Phil and Dee explained about its construction and role on WW2 and kept us entertained. Well worth money and just a reminder to go to loo before you start tour cos there's no where to go once down 🤭
O. H.
Quite an interesting excursion. My friends and I really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended as a leisure activity!
m.
Booked a one hour tour of the Victorian Tunnels. Wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I did guess that it would be dark, narrow and slightly claustrophobic. The volunteer guide went by the name of Pete and what a fun guy he was. In truth I wasn’t expecting a lot of the tour because, well it’s a tunnel. The tour felt like it only lasted 5 minutes because Pete gave such a great narrative of the history of the tunnels and the many stories great stories to tell about things that happened in the tunnels throughout it’s life. The stories and history warns't just confined to the tunnels who. There stuff about life for the people of Newcastle during the times of the tunnels. The coal miners, the people who worked o the tunnels and the less affluent times.
Best of all, the lights went out in the tunnels as part of the tour and it made me really appreciate just what a wonderful modern we live in outside of the tunnels.
N. P.
Thank you for a great tour from the volunteers. Really informative, friendly guys. 27th May 2022.
A. E.
Fascinating trip into the Victoria Tunnel under the streets of Newcastle. Our two guides were very engaging and knowledgeable and it being an evening tour was great with limited hours of daylight to explore. Didn't feel like I was wasting daylight hours being underground!
L. D.
Went on a tour today with guides John and Phil these guys have a great sense of humour which is needed when you have a fear of the dark like I do . Absolutely loved it will definitely be booking in for the longer tour at some point .Who would have thought this was under our feet and the history to it is very interesting .
c. 1.
Amazing experience..very friendly informative staff, lovely very interesting 2 hours..

Must to see in Newcastle. Guide Pete was awesome and he explained all stories about Tunnel
M. C.
Went down the Victoria Tunnels with James and Phil. Had a great time learning about the history of the tunnel. Enjoyed the use of sound / theatrics to help supplement stories they were illustrating. Expected to bump your head if you’re 1.8 M and over!
M. I.
Really informative and interesting tour from John and Phil. They both really brought the history of the tunnel to life with their knowledge, descriptions and wit.
An amazing place to visit for both adults and kids.
Watch that Google Maps doesn’t quite show the correct location for the museum - which is half way down Ouse Street next to Cross Fit.

We had an excellent tour by guide John B on Monday 26th July. We have been on holidays in NewCastle Upon Tyne and booked the tunnel tour for Monday. We had our tour time at 12pm and were 30 minutes late, we had a call form the office to check if we are ok , when I mentioned sorry we were lost as we are from Bedford came for the tunnel tour. Our guide was so kind he came back to give a quick tour of the tunnel to make kids happy (he was returned to the office after waiting for us at the booked time for the tour). We had our 7 years old twins with us who were too excited for the tunnel tour. I must admit John has been an excellent guide with a great sense of humour and so many stories, history related to Victoria tunnel. Kids were so excited to have the helmets with their own torches and listening to stories from John and making different noises while passing the tunnel, this made them so excited. Over all a great tour , special thanks to our guide John who made it very special.

Andy and Pete were fantastic guides

We had a wonderful morning touring The Victoria tunnel with John and Phil. Both were very knowledgeable and great hosts. They blended humour and information together to make a really fun tour for our group all whilst keeping to COVID guidelines. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Newcastle.
S.
If your going to Newcastle, get this booked. I'm 6"2 and very glad they provide helmets! Very knowledgeable guides who make it a great and interesting experience. Torches and helmets are provided, and place to leave bag if you need to.
D. R.
Interesting tour, nice guides, very professional.

Such a good tour! My wife took me for.my 30th birthday. We went on the 1hour tour. The tour guides were fantastic, really enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They even got everyone to sing Happy birthday to me 30ft underground!
If your going to Newcastle, highly highly recommend booking on the tour!
G. F.
I can't recommend this place enough. A hidden gem of a place, a great mix of historical points.
Also Trev our guide was awesome great with the adults and 3 kids (6-10yrs).
S. K.
Trev and Pete gave us a brilliant tour, really interesting stuff. All covid complient, good for individuals and families. Amazed to hear it's run by volunteers, very passionate and informed.
C. A.
Highly recommend this tour, extremely informative and brought home the difficult times people went through in the war and the ingenuity in the making of the tunnels for transporting coal. Everything was explained superbly by Peter our guide.
S. S.
Tour takes a couple of hours. Be prepared for a cool dark enclosed space with a low space with uneven floors. You meet at an office and walk down the canal side while the guide talks about wartime local history. You then get a hard hat and torch to use in the tunnel. One volunteer tour guide talked mostly about wartime, then the other talked about the tunnel's original purpose. Both guides knew their subjects well and were well rehearsed. They use humour to keep it fun and are very helpful. We really enjoyed it.
C. W.
Excellent tour that we did with a group of teenagers. They loved it. Definitely worth a visit.
N. C.
As with so many visitors, I imagine the fact that it exists is remarkable in itself. The step back into history is believable and the
L.
Fantastic wee tour. Very interesting and fascinating stories from our guides Pete and Barry who were super friendly.
R. G.
Me and my girlfriend booked the 1 hour tour well in advance and we weren’t disappointed at all. The group of about 10 people were led from the building to the entrance to the tunnels just a short walk away. We were then donned with hard hats and torches to light our way, and then our talented guides regaled us all with some excellent historical facts and stories. We parked just opposite the Free Trade Inn (free parking) and took a short walk down the Ouseburn. Will definitely go back with the nieces and nephews in the future. Thanks again!
J. T.
Excellent 2 hour tour of the Victoria Tunnels which run beneath the city centre. Guides were really engaging and informative throughout. You have to book in advance and the fee is worth the admission three times over. Hard hats and torches are provided, but I'd recommend wearing comfortable shoes you don't mind getting a little dirty. A must visit!
E. L.
Went to a piano recital in the tunnel, fantastic acoustics
M. H.
Fantastic half-day out. The hosts Bill and (the guy in the image forgot your name!) were excellent funny and skillful raconteurs! The tales they tell about the history of the tunnel were entertaining, interactive and engaging. Book online and in plenty of time as the tickets sell out all the time! The meeting point is at the Victoria Tunnel office opposite Seven Stories. We used the car park just outside in Lime Street. Wear sensible walking shoes!
G. W.
If you only do one thing in Newcastle do this tour. Fascinating history that you'd never imagine. The tour guides were 2 of the best I've ever met. Very knowledgeable and superb presentation skills.
D. P.
We did the hour tour and it was fascinating. The tunnel is over 170 years old and in very good condition. The first part of the tour focused on World war 2 and the second part on the Victorian era including the building of the tunnel. Both guides were very knowledgeable and I would be keen to go back for the 2 hour tour.
D. L.
Interesting tour describing history of tunnel in C19 and WW2.
R. S.
Peter and Claire are excellent tour guides, well informed and friendly who care about this experience for you. It was really interesting to hear the history of the tunnel and people who s lives used it. The clay kickers are my favourite but the fingerprints are the most interesting point for me. Throughly enjoyed this tour and it's not to well known as I would of thought. Hidden gem. Thanks Peter and Claire .
M. B.
Absolutely loved this tour. This is a must for anyone coming to Newcastle. Brilliant knowledgeable staff we had Pete and I think it was Norman they made the tour! They are both very passionate about their job. Thank you guys.
L. B.
Really great way to spend a couple of hours of your time. Interesting, educational and fascinating discovering not only why the tunnel was built but how it was used both for the transporting of coal in the 1820s but also the protection of people during ww2 air raids. The volunteer guides Donald and Peter were excellent.
S. A.
A very unique experience, not at all claustrophobic and very interesting, just watch your head 😜
A. K.
Great tour by Phil and D. Thank you. Overground walk round Ouseburn followed by underground tour with hard hats and torches. Very interesting two hours. Amazing what the Victorians did without mechanical assistance!
D. H.
What a revelation! The guides Andy and Dee, were very informative. Didn't know the tour existed until recently and would definitely recommend it. Great insight into the use of the tunnels during the war and in Victorian times.

S. A.
At the weekend we visited the tunnels on an arranged tour..Pete the tour guide was very informative & knowlegable on the history of the tunnels & conveyed it in a plain spoken way...(as an ex mining supervisor) i would just mention that although basic risk assessments had obviously been done, i would suggest a small brief proforma that would highlight any pre existing heart or reperatory issues ,as the final gradient portion of the tour is a strain on the cariovasclar system ....anyhow very intresting visit...
M. M.
An incredible tour through the tunnels, learning all about the wonderful history of Newcastle.

We had a lovely afternoon doing the guided tour with Pete and Rory. The history of the tunnels is fascinating, especially by the way it is told through these 2 amazing guides. They were factual, funny and engaging! Well worth a visit!

Very interesting tour, highly recommended. I enjoyed it so much I became a volunteer guide.

It is not suitable for people who are claustrophobic, afraid of the dark, and impatient to stand. When the tour starts, the tunnel door will be closed. During the process, the guide will tell the story with the lights in the dark depending on the situation. Many "stationary" commentary; enter; Distribute safety helmets and light flashlights after the tunnel.
The 45-minute tour is very recommended for £9, which is quite educational. It will talk about a lot of ins and outs, and there are also beds used for hiding in war for travelers' reference. The tour guide turned out to be a volunteer. Unbelievable, his enthusiasm, quality, and attitude are amazing.
I participated in the 10:00-11:15 after Christmas, 13 people group, but 5 people did not come, so a guide led 8 people, this number is amazing, the line in the tunnel will not be too long, among them There are one or two participants who are quite in favor, so the atmosphere is good. After 45 minutes, I started to feel long. Although the guide didn't delay the story, I still felt a little sleepy. The temperature in the tunnel is 13 degrees Celsius, which is not cold as expected, but you still need to wear warm. A short section of the road will be slightly muddy.

(Translated) This place has history and very interesting. It was built to carry coal from the mines, took about 2 years to build and was only used for 18 years. It was reopened during World War II to house the population of Newcastle and protect against the bombs of the Germans. Very interesting tour. If you understand English well, the tour is more interesting because of the stories of the guide. Well worth it.

Vale a pena.

(Translated) An interesting piece of history. The trip must be ordered in advance and you need to know English well, because the main attraction is the guide's tale. A tunnel like a tunnel.

Ciekawy kawałek historii. Wycieczkę trzeba zamówić z wyprzedzeniem i trzeba znać dobrze angielski, bo główną atrakcją jest opowieść przewodnika. Tunel jak tunel.
