Reviews of Vindolanda
M. M.
Could not recommend going here more! We were going to go for an hour then go for a walk, but we enjoyed it so much we spent a day wandering round, reading every bit of information and soaking in the incredible atmosphere. Even if history really isn't your thing it's so much fun to imagine the site as it was and it is such a stunning location its worth the visit.
I. L.
Incredible History.
What an amazing place to visit. Being able to walk around these ancient ruins is a brilliant experience, but to then see what the archaeologists have dug up in the museum is just stunning; leather shoes, letters, weapons etc. This is so worth a visit.
M. W.
Nice visit to a very historical site, a great place to wander around for all ages.
Very informative and interesting Museum full of Roman artifacts from the site.
Toilets and a cafe on site.
Admission fee 10% discount for English Heritage members.
Three car parks on site, they probably fill quickly in summer.
Quite a narrow and steep lane to access location, so be prepared.
E. P.
This was such a great find. Anyone remotely interested in local history MUST go here! The ruins, the museum, even the cafe were all amazing. The only difficult thing is for anyone with mobility issues, but the staff is super supportive to help you feel as welcome as possible during your stay
T. C.
We bought tickets for Vindolanda and the Roman Army museum which are discounted when purchased together.
The Roman Army Museum has a 3D movie which features Vindolanda, and is well worth seeing.
The fort, or forts as a number were built here is big and they are still excavating. Whilst it is an interesting place, it is important you take the tour as the guide really brings the place alive. You still need a good imagination though.
There is a great cafe onsite which is well worth a visit as well as a small museum and gift shop.

Excellent! Well worth the visit Take your time wandering the ruins. Head down the hill to the cafe and outstanding museum. Very informative, loads of seating to rest/listen & nice facilities.
If you have a disabilty or difficulty walking for 1600 meters or cannot walk uphill for long periods of time (although there is some seating for rest along the way), ask the museum staff where you can pick up your passenger or park close to the museum entrance.
Great visit!! Pictures I have taken do not properly serve this wonderful site.
H. G.
Had a wonderful time walking around the site, reading all the noticeboards and watching the dig. We then walked down to the museum and cafe for some lunch. Which was very good, fresh and plentiful.
Not suitable place for the unfit or elderly as the ground is very uneven and the path down/up from the museum to the ruins is very steep.
C. C.
Enjoyed our visit here, nice place. Just for information if traveling with an older person be aware that it has uneven ground and it is a very steep slope down to the cafe and museum. But great ruins amazing that it is 1900 years old. Also if you are a member of English Heritage you get 10% off your entrance ticket
J. C.
What a unique dig…so many unusual Roman artifacts, finds in the museum with stunning ruins. Exemplary piece of Hadrians Wall history! If you can visit only one UK Roman site…make it Vindolanda.
T.
Lovely ladies at the reception on the way in made us feel welcome right off the bat, a lovely historical site with good information boards and easy paths to follow through the ruins, we headed down to the cafe for lunch passed some lovely buildings on the way and lunch was affa fine, loads to choose from.
Was a bit disappointed that the shop had nothing to sell with the horse on it, they use the horse as their emblem for the Vinodlands yet there wasn’t even a postcard with the horse on it.
The museum is well worth a look, well set out and informative. We enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend.
S. B.
OMG this place is amazing! Worth a visit. The outdoor archaeological dig is brilliant and there is also a museum. I would have given 5 stars but we couldn't see the Vindolanda tablets because that part was closed. Still worth it!
K.
A well laid out siute with plenty of informative signage. The museum is first class and the refreshments and merchandising areas high quality.
Well worth a visit.

Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort just south of Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Archaeological excavations of the site show it was under Roman occupation from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD.
The Roman Army Museum And Vindolanda Fort are Two Destinations that can be visited with One Ticket, A Great Day Out.
You should look to Pre-Book your ticket to avoid and disappointment.
We have visited a few times now and always find something new.
(Mike's Tour was very informative)
Thank you. Remember its a charitable Trust who run it.
S. A. L.
If you're a Roman history fan this is the place to visit!
Both the ruins and the museum are fascinating and most days there are archeologists on site (and some are good enough to explain what they are doing).
The cafe is a bit of a walk and down a very steep slope* but well worth a visit as has a lovely range of food and drinks on offer. It's set in a lovely garden with some outdoor seating, a view of the recreated 'temple to the water nymphs' and there is also a shop and the museum here.
There is a further museum at another site that is also linked so might be worth getting the ticket that covers both if you plan to visit.
*We found out afterwards there is some car parking near by if, like me, you're on crutches or have walking difficulty though it would have been helpful to be told this at the entrance!
a. M.
Brilliant day out even in the rain. Children loved walking amongst history. The guided tour was fantastic and really brought the history to life. Wasn't sure what to expect before we arrived but very glad we went. The cafe was a welcome escape from the weather and very good value.
C. B.
A great museum which covers everything about life in the fort town of Vindolanda, from shoes to keys to timber to military life for the members of the Roman army. The museum in particular displays an amazing collection of leatherworks (which have been preserved this long thanks to mud!) and of writing tablets detailing little anecdotes which they give context for.
The outside part has extensive ruins of the town buildings and fort(s) (there were several built and rebuilt in the same place). It's quite impressive to see and I hear there is also live archeological digs which one can watch quite often. As it was Easter Sunday, we did not get to see it.
Definitely recommended, in complement to Hadrian's wall section at Steel Riggs.
S. G.
Fantastic museum of Hadrian's Wall and the Roman artifacts found there. Great coffee shop/restaurant with outdoor patio areas, which I'm sure will be nice in the summer.
r. k.
Amazing fort and vicus, great finds, the leather, wooden artifacts and of course the tablets.
Amazing valley next to fort with the temple dedicated to the 3 water nymphs.
A. M.
Excellent day out with knowledgeable and amusing tour guide making it extra special. I've learnt a huge amount and the museum is do much more than bits of carved stone. Nice cafe too. AND saw a bat flying around the pond in broad daylight!
R. D.
Visually and historical amazing. The site in itself is fantastic and the museum very close to the site is the icing on a beautiful cake. This is a place anyone visiting the Lakes must visit. Interesting, educational as just two of the adjectives one would use to describe this attraction.
J. H.
Brilliant ,lots to see, plenty of walking and great museum too !! Also very reasonably priced cafe serving light lunches, snacks ,cake, hot and cold drinks etc
M. M.
Superb large historical site. Actual excavations plus a recreated tower from Hadrian's wall. Museum has many items from the excavations including leather shoes, tools, jewelry and more. No spoilers but do read the Tablets in the museum.
j. s.
A great museum and ruins to visit to learn more about the Romans in Britain. The food in the cafe was also very good
H.
Great place. You can see why the romans chose it. Great guided tour with Alex. Cafe is beautifully landscaped. Good prices. Food nice. We spend three hours here and really enjoyed it. It’s very interesting and a jewel in British history.
C. R.
Lovely day out. We spent 3 hours here and didn't see everything. Gift shop and cafe are pricey but it's what is to be expected.
A. B.
What an amazing day, so much history and this site has only just come to our attention. Well run and disabled access.
G. B.
Went there because the offspring adores the Roman Empire.
At first, I thought the ”You feel 3000 years of history” is just a cliche, but You really feel it there.
We definitely going to go back as all the family were stunned!
It's a must-see!
B. P.
Very impressive site, nicely done museum with lots of fantastic artefacts
It is worth to try to go on guided tour - not absolutely necessary but helps to understand what you see. Also posiblity to chat with people working on the dig - priceless.
A. H.
Interesting walk around the excavated site.
Lots of artefacts in the museum.
Well worth a visit for the price
A. P.
If you are in the area this is a place not to be missed. The extent of the excavations is very impressive and on-going. The museum is wonderful and there is so much to see. We spent several hours there but could have stayed a lot longer. There's an amazing collection of preserved roman shoes and personal items along with incredible writing on postcard sized pieces of wood. You will not be disappointed.
V. W.
Very interesting and HUGE place. Make sure to visit the museum to see the dig finds. Great to be able to watch and speak to active archaeologists.
J. L.
Slightly off the track of the wall walk but certainly worth making a detour. Foundations of the Fort buildings can be clearly seen with information provided explaining each. The highlight for us though, were the letters in the museum written by the soldiers garrisoned there, which were discovered on site. They throw a fascinating light on what life was like for the centurions and the types of things they were requesting.
There is a cafe on site too.
Good parking and an accessible entrance.
Don't forget to visit its sister museum, The Roman Army museum near the wall itself - another fabulous museum illustrating the life of the soldiers and the building of the wall.
H. G.
Visiting this site was a highlight of our family holiday. Beautiful location, interesting tour & surprisingly impressive museum! Suitable for all ages.
NB: the cafe is at the far side of the site down a steep slope. Wheelchair accessible and well maintained grounds. Toilets at entrance & cafe.
K. R.
Amazing site with an excellent museum. The volunteers are all clearly very passionate about the site which is lovely to see. We also went on one of the tours which was really interesting and well done. Will definitely be back in the future to see what progress the excavation has made!
J. M.
We had an excellent visit here, large site with plenty to see, the free guided tour was very good and there's a great museum displaying all the finds that have been made on the site over the years, took us 3 hours to see everything
N. H.
What a fantastic day out for our family
The guide was outstanding and catered for his audience perfectly.
So much to see, do and take in.
m. h.
If you have any interest in Roman or British history it is a great place to visit, spent many hours wandering around and visiting the museum, shop and cafe.
K. P.
Really fantastic day out! The site is very impressive and the friendly tour guides help you get a sense of what it would have been like. The museum has loads of incredible artifacts, and the well stocked cafe is decorated in a roman style to add to the fun. I'm surprised this place isn't more well known!
I. A.
Very interesting site. The reenactment by the people of the 8th legion really made it for me though. Really friendly and informative.
J. A.
Loved it. Great museum with loads of finds to look over. Plus you can walk round the Fort and see how it would have been
A. A.
Great location with a huge amount of history. Free guided tour was really good and explained the different layers of excavation.
Detailed museum and would also getting the shared entrance pass with the Roman Army Museum 6 miles up the road.
b. 1.
A gem .. and a great visit. We both enjoyed it. Facilities well kept
K. P.
What a place - absolutely fascinating and so well done. The cafe was lovely with very reasonably priced food, great museum and shop with plenty for littler ones at good prices, and the 'finds' itself are just astonishing. Only thing that would be better is the main centre closed before the site, so we left at 4.45ish but couldn't go to the toilet before our 2 hour journey! Would be good (and visitor friendly) to have some loos that are accessible on the way out!
S. L.
Amazing. Parking. Cafe. Live archeological site. Museum.
T. W.
A 'world class' experience ... a sometimes overused term that can justifiably be applied to this site. It combines ongoing excavation with an extensive array of clearly interpreted remains of Roman military forts of different periods together with their associated civilian settlements. This is further supported with an outstanding modern and dynamic museum exhibiting some of the finds that have made this site so famous, accompanied by a delightful cafe with inside and outside seating in an idyllic location.
E. P.
Excellent excavation and museum. Tour was very good (was going every two hours). Only wish I had more time to visit (only had 2 hours) could have spent 5 easily at a slow moderate pace.
B. J.
Really good to visit. There is a museum which is superb and a little cafe which sells great food. The shop is excellent too. The whole place does a great job in explaining the history and life story about the people who lived here. Very interesting and should be cherished as part of our history.
M. V.
A large on going dig site. The guided tour is a must. Dress fir the weather.
p. T.
In tandem with the Roman Fort Museum this was a fantastic day out. Over too soon. Get here early if you don't want to miss the museum.
A. M.
A mind blowing day out. The site is huge so allow plenty of time for your visit. The ruins are fascinating and very impressive but the exhibits in the museum are breathtaking- hard to believe things approaching their second millennium could be so well preserved.
C. O.
Such an amazing place. Our eldest is studying the Romans at school so he was fascinated walking round. We were lucky and had a sunny day, it isn't somewhere I'd go when it's raining. The cafe food was lovely, good amount of indoor and outdoor tables to eat at. Prices reasonable and selection good. We had a really good visit and I particularly liked how the staff were so open to talking to us and asking if we had any questions. We found everyone friendly and helpful.
R. W.
Incredible place. To feel as if you can walk on the same paths as the Romans all those years ago. Loads to explore, fascinating layers of history and development..... and they're still discovering more and more each year. Astonishing!
R. H.
Wow! What a fabulous place to visit. If you are lucky enough to visit while excavations are taking place, the staff and volunteers are really happy to stop and explain what they are currently working on and tell you the finds they have just dug up! It does involve a bit of walking - there is a steep hill - so you need sturdy shoes and a bit of effort!
i. s.
Lovely well kept site . Plenty to see and can watch the ongoing digs taking place
J. S.
This place allows you to be transported back in time ,it gives up so much information about roman Britain if you just scratch the surface, literally .It's a lovely place for a stroll with the family or a scholarly field trip to satisfy your desire for ancient knowledge of an amazing civilisation. Ignite your imagination ,confirm things about which you had just heard about in books ,here you can walk where Romans did ,see how they lived and then have a scone and a cup of tea .Nice museam, gift shop and tea room .
S. C.
What an excellent place. The concept is amazing, the archaeological site is really open and available for wandering. And the place is really well run; lovely staff, a delightful cafe (and reasonably priced), very clean and new amenities, etc. Definitely recommend!
A. A.
Brilliant guided tour of the site (Helen), gave a vivid picture of what it was like 1800 years ago, illustrated by finds on display in the museum. Fantastic to see in the museum leather shoes and other personal belongings, which rarely survive at other locations; and the letters and other documents written on wood tablets give a unique insight into life in a frontier outpost.
M. B.
An excellent museum. Eternal buildings many with information boards give visitors an idea and feeling for the place. Museum itself very accessible with information on the displays giving excellent and descriptive knowledge.
Would highly recommend a visit.
A. P.
A fantastic day out to Vindolanda and the Roman museum
Very interesting regarding the history of the Roman occupation of the area
Lots to see in both museum's
Loads of artifacts on display that have been recovered from the site
Saver ticket fantastic value for money
A. P.
Lots to see, beautiful scenery, clean museum with lots of artifacts. Nice cafe food with lovely outside area. Staff nice with clean facilities seemed wheelchair friendly apart from some of the ruins.
E. B.
Very interesting place, if you like roman history in Britain. There are plenty of ruins to look at, you can even volunteer to do a bit of digging/archeology. The museum is huge, I did not do half of it. The cafe was nice, not amazing, but nice. Had a coffee (had better!) And a pasty, which was nice, but SOOO hot. It had molten cheese in it. Word of caution, let it cool down a bit. Anyway, all in all, worth a look
a. a.
The perfect way to touch the history. And Paul is a wonderful guide.
A. M.
We went expecting to be there 2hrs tops but spent 4hrs there. Museum is superb and so many interesting artefacts. Site itself is in a beautiful setting. Also as a bonus, got discount for the kids with their Blue Peter badges and for my wife's student status. Winner. 👍
P. F.
Fascinating ruins of an ancient Roman Fort and settlement. Wonderful views and you can imagine it being occupied and all of the hustle and bustle in Roman times. Museum is very well presented and organised with some fascinating Roman architects including every day items such as
shoes. The coffee shop is in a hidden valley with a stream with a raised outside deck with lovely views
A. C.
Best archaeological site and museum in England.
K. R.
Must see!
I was amazed of how well organised this setup was. You can really get a feeling how it must have been living in the place 1700 years ago.
Make sure you go to the back of the area and visit the museum. Nice display of artifacts from the time. Especially the letters from the inhabitants to their family.
Well deserved 5 stars!
L.
This museum has been a recommendation from a local. Absolutely brilliant and a must do if you are visiting Hadrians Wall and would like to know more about the Roman history in the area. Brilliant work done by a charity and volunteers. Very big museum with plenty of local artifact's. The café was great to warm up a bit. There is a strong wind on the site (and one of the volunteers told us it's there pretty much all the time) so bring a warm jacket!
We have spent around 4.5h and we could have spent even more time. The volunteers on site are fabulous and are more than happy to answer your questions. Super friendly place. High recommended :)
B. I.
Excellent day out Lots to to see on site and in museum Excellent chatting with person conserving the bathhouse, especially the plasterwork
M. M.
This place stands "Head & Shoulders" above the three Roman Settlements I've already visited (Arbeia, Segedunum & Housteads).
It's a large site with nearly all the Roman foundations in tact and sits in the most beatiful natural surroundings. The site is still expanding with excavation in continual progress. They think it will take another 150 years of work to reveal all of this site. This is a real treasure of Roman History.
I highly recommend doing one of the free 50 minute guided tours of this site. These run at 10.30, 11.30,13.30 and 14.30. Our guide Sheila had incredible knowledge and understanding of how this Roman settlement operated. Fascinating hearing about the Baths, Heating System, Payment of the Soldiers and many more aspects of life here.
The museum has a fabulous collection of artifacts, all found on this site and presented in amazing condition; like the collection of Roman leather shoes still in tact. But the jewel in the crown is the Tablets from which so much has been learnt about the daily lives of the people here. The writing on these has all been translated. They're so precious that most of them are stored in the British Museum, but some are displayed in this museum.
The facilities are also very good here with a lovely Caffe offering hot & cold food/drinks and several seating areas in the landscaped garden area outside. You do have to walk down a short steep path to visit the Museum and Caffe in the small valley just below the Fort. Quite easily spend two or three hours at this site, and worth every penny of the entrance fee. But I'd advise doing this together with the Vindolana Roman Army Museum on a combined ticket. The army museum is another 7 miles West.
B. J.
You gotta give it to the Roman they got things down. While most people were sticking berries up their nose the Romans were lounging in baths with heated floors. Museum there was just the right size and very well done.
A. T.
What an amazing site. Incredible to experience lives of People 2000 years ago. A lot of excavation work still going on which is fascinating to watch. Well worth a visit and very educational for children
A. L.
Fantastic. One of the best examples of ancient Rome not just in UK but in eu.
This has an unbelievable collection of roman stuff, jewelry, weapons, tablets, stones, etc etc.
One of the best things to visit in the whole country, in fact, probably the best site outside of rome.
Make this part of your wish list.
Its just incredible.
s. r.
Roman Fort and small village with museums lots to see with shop and cafe could take 2 to 3 hours to get around
E. 9.
Absolute must to see if you are walking Hadrians wall or passing at all. It's huge and the museum at the bottom is also very big. Lovely little cafe and clean toilets. Staff very helpful & knowledgeable on public transport links
L. W.
Excellent excavated ruins, replica construction, and museum of artifacts which even at the height of tourist season doesn't feel crowded.
J. C.
I could spend days here! Fascinating evidence of Roman garrison and settlement. Excellent museum. Plus, friendly and very knowledgeable volunteers. I can't recommend it highly enough.
C. M.
An incredible experience. Immersing ourselves in the lives of the people who lived here and imagining how it was to be there was fascinating. Our boys, 8 and 6, loved it. We want to go back and spend more time there. Amazing dedication from the people on the team working to learn more.
Would have loved more info on each part on site - panels etc as the kids spent more time running between these than putting their noses in a guide book, but that's a small thing. The wall recreation was a great thing for them to understand more too. Well worth a visit.
C. B.
Had a fabulous time, the fort and extramural settlement (vicus) is incredible. Great to see archaeology in action. Museum fab, kids well entertained. Cafe good but quite a long queue, may have just been a rush we were caught in. Food really nice.
g. p.
Absolutely amazing day, been on my bucket list for years and didn’t disappoint, fascinating finds, super people, from the site director down, special mention to the reception staff who took note of my disability on arrival and one of whom actually came after me, half an hour in to my tour, with water on the hottest day of the year. A must see once in your life for everybody. Ever person on site was eager to chat about what was going on with the dig. To actually see two thousand year old writing was unbelievable.
The service at the tea rooms was excellent, my order beat me to my chosen table and of a better standard than most “visitor centres”
All in all out standing, congratulations to everyone involved
M. P.
wealth of Roman Artifacts in the museum. Great to watch the archeologists at work excavating the site. Well worth a visit one of the best preserved sites in the country an impressive site.
D. M.
An ongoing excavation of a Roman Fort with an informative museum. Gives a great insight into life on the Frontier.
And when you need a rest there's a great restaurant.
D. C.
Great day trip to visit the well exhibited grounds and the museum, which paint a vivid picture of life on the far western frontier of the Roman Empire. Friendly staff and a pleasant cafe with good food and decent coffee.
K.
Walking round the ruins and reading the description of what was once there you kind of wonder how they know. The museum confirms it all and it's amazing what has been uncovered over the years. We'd been there two hours before I even checked the time. Definitely worth a visit. Great walks on the wall too
A. B.
Amazing place all the guides and archeologists that were working there were really helpful and just loved answering all questions you may have I was on cruches when there and I have to say in terms of being able to get around the site it was easy and comfortable and had plenty of easy to use paths and rest stops.
M. C.
Second visit in 10 years and the site gets bigger and better
D.
Fascinating - much more interesting than expected with a really great museum. Close to sycamore gap for a walk along the wall there too.
J. W.
We went on a bit of a rainy day, a great site to explore with kids, but can be muddy so wellies and wet weather gear are recommended.
The staff and volunteers were knowledgeable and helpful. The children loved playing in the reconstructed forts and there are lots of exhibits to see in the museum section.
It's on our return list and there are some good value tickets that give access for a year, you can also get a combination ticket that gives access to the Roman Army museum as well.
That said it kept my two (8yo and 4yo) occupied for a good two hours and if it wasn't for the weather we would have stayed longer.
J. L.
Great place to visit! I would definitely come back again.
D. W.
This is the best of all the Hadrians Wall Attractions with the best Roman Museum around. The museum is really informative going into detail about the history of the Fort, The Roman Soldiers that lived there and also what life was like there. The museum also mentions the weapons the Roman used and the Clothing they worse such as Jewellery and Shoes with the biggest collection of Roman Shoes at any museum around with all the Shoes pretty much still intact which is really astounding. The museum also houses extracts of The Famous Vindolanda Tablets, which are interesting and exciting. The last mention of the Museum is the large amount of Wooden objects which is in large supply and are the originals from Roman Times making it remarkable how they have survived that long and the Museum also houses some wonderful pottery with Latin inscriptions on them and Roman imagery. The ruined Fort is brilliant with informative and interesting information boards dotted around the site and you can marvel at what is left of the wonderful architecture and to make things more interesting the site is still in the process of being excavated so there still might be more weird and wonderful finds to unearth and uncover. There is a gift shop and cafe on site with gifts and refreshments at reasonable prices. The staff on site are very friendly and helpful assisting you with where to go and what to see. Overall this is a great day out and a pleasant experience and definitely one to visit if in the area of Hadrians Wall.
J. B.
What did the Romans do for us? Visit Vindolanda & find out! Really interesting with signs around the site explaining everything & the museum at the end of the site is really interesting with so many artefacts displayed that have all been found at the site. Didn't have time to do the site justice & will be back.
H. K.
Great place to visit and more to see than you'd think. Reasonable price for entry and the museum is a good size with a nice little coffee shop tucked down at the bottom of the hill.
H. P.
Fantastic place well signposted also plenty of seating without sitting on the walls. Lots of information dotted around concerning the ruins. Well worth a visit for anyone even those only remotely interested in history. Good pathways for scooters so access for disabled as well.
A. W.
Britain's Pompeii but without the volcano. Fantastic museum with many artifacts and a live archaeological dig until the end of September. A credit to the Vindolanda Trust who look after the site nowadays.
A. B.
This is the best of the forts on the wall, largely thanks to the incredible museum. Allow several hours for your visit because you will be engrossed!
R. B.
A real jewel of such historical significance that is hard to believe of Roman occupation of the Isles. A must see, and taking the tour is recommended. A good part of the day well spent. Get there early, and plan to spend the day in the valley of Hadrians wall after first visiting Vindolanda.
N. G.
Excellent site, museum, cafe and shop. The site is huge though and there is a very steep hill. Not good for disabled people or people with mobility issues.
W. D.
Such an outstanding independent run trust. The staff are friendly. The site itself alone is awe-inspiring but the finds they have there and the history in the Roman tablets give an accurate life of what actually went on in the daily lives. These tablets and their translation are found inside the most extensive museum of Roman history I've ever visited. Beautifully laid out in the former home of its owner and founder. The site is accessible but due to the landscape quite steep . The museum is fully accessible as to the delicious cafe and gift shop. I would recommend this site together with its Roman army museum a few miles west down the wall to which you can get discounted tickets. Both very much worth a visit. Large carparks in both and clean accessible toilets. I'd advise the walk along the wall between the two museums although the Roman army museum is situated alongside the wall vindolanda is about a half hour walk away. This said I recommend the A122 hadriens wall bus that actually runs along the military road by side if hadriens wall and stops at these museums as well as other wall stops along the way. I'd recommend visiting in the summer months when they are actively have digs onsite to watch how they are still uncovering more and more finds.
C. W.
Vindolanda is a must-see for anyone visiting Hadrian's Wall. It is not directly on the wall, but pre-dates it & was inhabited for several hundred years.
Vindolanda is famous for its finds: the particular conditions here have preserved unexpected items in excellent condition, especially leather and wood ( which would normally rot away). Huge numbers of sandals, shoes & boots have been discovered: every conceivable design of sandals, wooden flip-flops to wear on the hot floor of the bath-house and a 'Manolo Blahnik'-equivalent belonging to the commander's wife. It's even stamped on the insole with the maker's mark & logo.
Perhaps most famously there are the handwritten wooden tablets or 'postcards', which are amazing. A number of these are on display in the museum (at the bottom of the hill, so make sure you don't miss it!) They are beautifully presented, with an audio-visual guide for each one, giving the original Latin, a translation & information about the writers & recipients.
The site itself is very impressive due to its scale. Some of the vicus (village outside the fort walls) has been excavated, and there is a reconstruction of part of the wall & a gatehouse. This gives a vivid impression of what life was like there in Roman times.
One big attraction is that there are archaeological digs here every summer. You can watch & talk to the volunteer diggers and to the on-site archaeologists, which is fascinating.
There is also a lovely café with plenty of outside seating looking over the beautiful grounds. You may be 'mugged' for breadcrumbs by the very friendly robins, or you might spot dippers and grey wagtails on the stream.
You could easily combine your visit with a walk (from uphill, you can get a fabulous panoramic view of the site).
Make sure you also visit the Vindolanda Roman Army Museum. It's not just about the military, and has a great 3D film of the wall.
H. C.
So much to see. Site and museum both worth extended time. Cafe and toilets in the museum at far end of site. Watching the dig really interesting.
l. s.
Fascinating place , still under excavation, we were lucky to speak to the head of excavations who told us of the plans and what he was currently digging up amazing, covers quite a large area and the museum and grounds are so well kept ,would definitely like to return in a year or two to see the progress made ,
A. S.
Very extensive Roman dig site with a large museum too. A good family day out, with a bus every 2 hours or just over half-hour with a mile and a half's walk.
W. M.
Fantastic. Incredible history. But what did the Roman's ever do for us? Roads, safe water, irrigation, law, currency, language, standardized measures and trade.
H. C. N.
The only constantly excavated site along the Hadrians wall monument. A vast Fort and Village to explore and a beautiful museum boasting an amazing collection of Roman artifacts including shoes and writing tablets. Because it is a live site it doesn't allow dogs for obvious reasons. You can talk to the archaeologists and excavators during the week April to September.
G. R.
Amazing museum, fantastic ruins to wander around and a nice cafe
d. s.
Is was easy to find plenty of parking aswell. Really well managed with loads to do and look at, I knew nothing about the history of the wall before visiting some of the artifacts are amazing
C. L.
Amazing look at the structure a Roman fort would have taken, active archaeological digs to watch, museum is great, very interesting. Decent cafe and visitor facilities. The main attraction is the ruins of course, must visit.
I. P.
Very knowledgeable staff, who impart their enthusiasm to you. Easy to imagine Romans still walking around . Great place with a super museum and cafe 👍👍👍
P. W.
Vindolanda is a must when I'm in the area. Unlike most of the Roman sites I've been to, at both the wall and across the country Vindolanda is -relative to archaeology - dynamic. They are still exploring and still discovering things there. The museum is excellent along with a well stocked shop and great cafe.
You can get a combined ticket for the Roman Army Museum, but I wasn't that impressed with it. Although in fairness I visited it after a week that covered numerous Roman sites, so maybe Roman fatigue was kicking in by then.
M.
Fascinating place, a fort (well there were apparently at least 9) and the town outside the fort. If you are lucky and visit between April and September, you get to see excavation work being carried out in front of your eyes. As they do this there are staff on hand who will happily explain what is happening, most of those on the dig are only there for 2 weeks of the year but many come back year after year. Don't forget to visit the museum hidden away in a landscaped area with trees looking so different from the rest of the place. In the museum you will see many of the artifacts dug up over the years including shoes, weapons, bones and the famous letters detailing everyday life nearly 2000 years ago.
M. L.
Great staff and excellent services at the site. You will be impressed at how history is shown in these ruins.
A. B.
Very interesting place but he warned if you're thinking of popping for a coffee at the café you must have tickets to enter vindolander too!
D. S.
Walk in the same places as the Roman legionnaires and feel the history absolutely fantastic place.
J. d. M.
Absolutely fascinating. An incredible insight into the past. The fact that nine forts were built on the site over a period of more than three hundred years is in itself an amazing source of information.
N. M.
Absolutely stunning, tour guide was very informative. Views from the site are amazing
E. K.
Vindolanda was of the stops on our Hadrian’s Wall tour. This site is an active and ongoing excavation of Roman history! Just fascinating! We visited in December and we pretty much had the place to ourselves! It was cold, so dress warmly! This is a must go to place for any Roman history nerd! Highly Recommend!
H. K.
Absolutely incredible Roman fort town right at the edge of Hadrian's Wall. The museum is unparalleled in its information and collections including some rare objects and remains. The museum is highly worth spending extra time in and the British Museum texts on loan from the site were beautifully presented. The ruins are made easily readable by use of the guidebook at a reasonable price to the site and museums trust. The ongoing excavations were being undertaken by incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers of mixed backgrounds who were very involved with the general public and spoke of recent finds across the trenches and future plans for excavation work. As it's an ongoing project it is a site that will be worth returning to, but regardless I couldn't tire of the striking setting and beautiful museum displays. Thoroughly impressed! The highlight of the summer. It was connected between the other sites well and a discounted ticket could be bought upon entry for the Roman Army Museum as well. Make sure you check which car park is most suitable for you as the area is hilly and the site is a whole Roman town and then some!
B. F.
Highly recommend the guided tour, spend some time chatting with the volunteer archaeologists, and I hope you have the weather we did. A superb, working museum experience.
K. A.
Lots to see. There are indoor and outdoor areas. Outside areas include ruins, archaeologists at work, recreated forts and temple. Indoor area includes museum exhibits of their finds, art works, cafe, shop and toilets. You can spend a few hours here easily.
J. B.
Visited 19/7/20 with my 87 year old father. He used a 4 wheel walker. Paths are good although as you should expect some uneven. Off the main paths the gravel areas are more of a challenge for narrow wheel. Dad did well on these too. This was allocated time slot visit as lockdown eased. Museum not open but we knew that. All staff excellent. Great site for those interested in history. Beter still when the museum open.
R. M.
It's a very interesting place to visit. If you are into your history it's a must see. It's not that expensive and there's also a roman museum 6 miles away.
C. K.
When I saw this site on my group's itinerary, I wasn't excited about it. After my visit, I can say I was wrong, though my visit was rushed. The fort and the history behind it is exciting and educational. My only regret was our tour organizer didn't inform our dedicated tour guide how much time the group had to visit. While I appreciate the archeologist briefing our group passion and excitement for her work, it took up a lot of the group's allocated time to explore. Other than that - enjoyable visit.
M. C.
Very interesting place years of history and a nice café. On the trail of the Hadrian's wall we stopped by the Vindolanda site for a quick visit. We were amazed at how many people had lived there and how they lived in the past. The Roman's were there for hundreds of years and only recently recovered. The site was completely over grown up till the sixties.
R. S.
We stopped here during a tour to Hadrian's Wall. It's an amazing site in a beautiful location. There is an interesting museum with many ancient artifacts found on the site which they are still excavating. The walk to the museum and cafe is a bit long and gets steep at the end, so it was a bit difficult for the elderly people in our group. We had lunch in the cafe. The tea and scones were a disappointment after what we'd come to expect during a week in Scotland.
A. M.
Vindolanda is huge! It is totally worth a visit. This is an active site and is still being excavated. Items are still being found and added to the on-site museum. Be ready to walk. The ruins are on top of the hill and the museum is down the hill. Not a hard hike by any means, path is smooth, but can be steep so accessibility isn't perfect or easy for everyone. Staff was very nice and very helpful!
z. l.
Loved it. Get on the guided tour if you can as the plaques around the site only have a little bit of info. The museum is brilliant with loads of cool stuff in. Get the saver ticket and you can use that for the roman army museum down the road as well
D. D.
Excellent, informative and thought provoking. The reconstruction of the forts, the display in the museum, well everything is just brilliant. Even if you are not into history or the Romans you should still visit I'm sure you would learn something and enjoy yourself.
W. S.
An impressive site of heritage.
You can image how great the Rome did here.
And the most important point, the site is still living.
L. H.
Excellent!! We walked it from The Sill. Did a little tour with a guide.... Fab day out!!!! Really great site, very interesting and lots to see. Excellent museum with lots of finds and a lovely cafe.
J. F.
Very interesting. We had a lovely day, warm and sunny. Perfect.
A. M.
Vindolanda well worth the visit for all those interested in Roman Britain and the legions that fought and died foe the glory of Rome. Extensive well preserved finds can be seen in the engaging and informative museum. The site itself is fantastic with excavated remains and live excavations. There is examples of living archaeology in a small section of turf and rampart wall and a small section of a stone built wall and turret built on the evidence of existing foundations on hadrians wall.
p. d.
Brilliant place full of history, could have spent all day there, also excellent cafe, pick a nice day though.
N. P.
Wonderful museum and cafe (what we all judge an attraction on really!) Really vast site and great to be able to wander freely amongst the ruins.
E. M.
Unique experience. Amazing to see such a well preserved Roman site. So exciting to visit the museum and see the artefacts close up.
I. R.
This is a great open air venue. The history of the Roman Empire is outstanding. There is an inside museum as well again with some astonishing finds and information. The cost to enter is well worth it. We were there half a day, but if you take sandwiches you could be there all day.
The cafe is good as well.
K. J.
Absolutely fascinating! Excavations are ongoing and they are all more than happy to stop and tell you what the project is and new discoveries. There was a tour every hour and these are included in the price. There is also a lovely garden and the usual facilities. We hope to visit again. Really good value for money.
F. H.
Amazing place. Really get the feel of a Roman fort and town. We took the guided tour which was very well presented with lots of very interesting information. Excellent visit.
N. C.
A lovely day out and a fascinating place. The finds in the museum are very interesting, it gives a great insite into Roman frontier life.
R. G.
Guided tour was informative and helped to interpret the ruins, which themselves were amazing impressive museum and displays of artefacts which were extensive.
Had a nice lunch in the cafe by a pretty riverside garden.
Bear in mind if you are walking there from The Sill visitor centre, it is further than the signage suggests. There is a bus though, which you could use!
All in all, thoroughly recommend a visit.
M. B.
About 40yrs ago I accidentally visited this site, a muddy field, freezing cold, raining, blowing a hurricane & stayed all of 5 minutes before retreating to the car to drive home, & that was in the summer ! How the Romans stayed so long beats me.
I recall there was no-one around to answer anything, there was some people down a ditch digging in the mud & I felt sorry for them.
This time, after viewing the website I booked tickets online, the weather was fabulous, and there was a guide taking you around the site.
The site had improved beyond all possible perception, its fabulous, brilliant visitors entrance, museum, reconstruction etc
I've visited many Roman sites across Europe, & this site together with the Roman Army site is amongst the best I've visited, certainly the the most economical especially compared to Pompeii, The Colosseum etc. Anyone having visited there will understand, the cost is prohibitive - overpriced & short timed.
The attached photo is the wall of shoes in the museum.
Well worth the visit
M. D.
Fabulous site of huge historical significance. Brilliantly put together for the historian or tourist. The staff in the reception were lovely and helpful. Being gluten free, the cafe chef went out of her way to ensure the meal she served was absolutely gluten free. Thank you. You were and are a star
P. M.
A fantastic historical site. The guide was so knowledgeable and made it even more interesting. Excellent cafe with prompt service. The gardens surrounding the cafe are so beautiful. All in all a great day out. Highly recommended
P. C.
Excellent Roman Fort ruins and museum. We happened to be there when the was also a reenactment weekend on, which did make it more special. Over all we were there over 5 hours. Very interesting history of the site in the 1900s!
Definitely worth a visit.
K. B.
Thought this would be a good spot to while away an hour...ended up spending ages! We luckily arrived just in time for a free guided tour around 11am. The site is surprisingly big and great to poke around, archaeologists on site friendly and happy to spare a few minutes to chat. The museum is great and surprisingly large. Cafe is excellent and well priced, couple of vegan options and a fair few veggie options. Entrance fee is very reasonable too for what you get, and the preservation costs they have to cover. Highly recommend this.
T. D. F. 1.
This was brilliant! To see and walk around the history and find out all the things they made and the way they lived was really good
A. C.
Amazing roman fort with an active volunteer archaeology program. Recently renovated museum houses a great collection of ancient objects including some unique and incredibly important examples of writing that have opened up the roman world to our study. Good companion to the roman army museum further west along the wall. There’s even a double saver ticket available. Beautiful countryside nearby laced with public footpaths.
P. B.
Very interesting place to visit if you like our countries heritage.Amazing archaeological site, even witnessed a dig taking place. Stunning scenery all round.
C. S.
Some more seating along the pathways for older people to rest would be very much appreciated. Cafe was good. Nice food. Setup and gardens were beautiful!
T. W.
One of the best Roman forts in the country. A must for anyone interested in archeology, history or the Romans.
A. G.
We enjoyed another visit to fascinating Vindlanda in lovely weather today. It is amazing to see how much the site has developed and grown since we first visited twenty five years ago. Looking forward to returning again soon.
A. H.
Quite possibly the best Roman museum we've ever visited, the quality & variety of artifacts is unbelievable, the wooden writing tablets they've recovered give a real insight into the lives of inhabitants. Well worth a visit along with its sister site at the Roman Army Museum.
K. P.
The Vindolanda was incredible. We spent a few hours here and could have easily spent a couple more. The fort is humongous and you are free to walk around the entire area (except what is blocked off; they could have a dig area.) There are many small signs posted so you know what that spot is believed to have been (butcher shop, for example.)
The entire area is beautiful and when you walk past the Vindolanda to the museum, it’s still beautiful with a waterfall and creek area. The museum was full of interesting finds from the Vindolanda and full of information. There was even a small kids area, too. The cafe was pleasant and there was a good selection of books and miscellaneous items in the gift shop. I absolutely recommend making this a stop if you are visiting England.
K. M.
Staff lovely, worth getting a saver ticket, museum 6 mile away but take the walk, it's peaceful
C. T.
As an excavation site it is very interesting and large with excavations continuing. The public can walk around surrounding site and can ask questions of the excavators. So much more to uncover though
K. F.
This place is fantastic, it loses stars for me because it's not dog friendly. Their reason is the worry that people won't clean up after their dog. My argument is that anyone paying £12.50 or so to get into the place, is hardly likely to be the type of person who isn't picking up after their dog. We ran round the site in an hour & had to leave before we could visit the museum, shop or cafe. This site isn't an English Heritage one, you do get a discounted entry though. I think the work they are doing is tremendous, I just believe they need to reconsider their policy on dogs.
R. R.
Lovely place on a nice sunny day, staff were all very friendly and helpful especially the lady on the main entrance at top car park, who's worked there for many years you are a credit to the place.
To all the one starrers, I can't understand why you would assume dogs are allowed in and you should just be able to walk in and use the toilets, where else could you do that without buying something or paying?
C. F.
An ongoing archaeological site, with recreations of military and civilian buildings on the actual site. The best gift shop on Hadrian's wall! I visited three times! Always a pleasure!
P.
Absolutely a must see if you are interested in Roman British History.
Are you ready to go back in time? To walk along the stanegate and through the Vicus that leads to the fort?
Steeped in history and archeological finds, I got a real sense of the place and why it was situated and thrived here for so long.
Once you've finished wandering around the archeology you can enjoy a coffee and sandwich before you explore the museum.
J. A.
Impressive excavation of a Roman fort and town as well as a small but informative museum surrounded by gorgeous gardens. Worth the price of admission just having a drink on the terrace and enjoy the view.
a. s.
We spent five hours here, that's how good it was. A venue not to be missed. Hope to come again in September.
G. B.
An absolute must-see for everyone who has even only the slightest interest in history. Impressive scenery and landscape. Very nice and helpful staff.
J. M. S.
One of the most wonderful historic sites I have visited. To see the archeologists working is a great addition. Truly a great experience and superb items on display. Just 'wow' !
G. G.
Museum is very good, heading off to the fort, we had to ask the direction, as it wasn't signposted. We bought tickets for Vindolanda and the Roman Army musuem
I. K.
Great place for anyone who likes history. My kids found it very interesting too. Car parking is sufficient. One can buy ticket for this site only or a combined one which will be valid for the similar sites nearby. There is a little restaurant and gift shop as well. The site itself and nearby place looks fantastic. It makes people forget how hard the life could have been in those days.
R. J.
Huge archeological site with very good museum. If you are interested in Roman Britain you could spend all day here. The letters written on wood are fascinating and give an insight into life at that time. Even the public toilets are cleverly done!
C. R.
Top quality venue.museum beatifully laid out...fabulous story of the Roman occupation....constantly being up graded...great family visit.
A. 0.
Went here the year b4 covid to help with my Classical Civilisation studies and the artefacts and buildings/ structures that remain are really interesting and fascinating. Recommend for anyone that is into the Roman Britain side of history.
N. S.
Love UK for its attitude bringing history into life and leaving the legacy into de future. We at RP MODELS, enjoy doing the researches in her magestus lands. Staff at te museum was out of this world and the 3D video on the edge of the empire a must see.
t. M.
Absolutely amazing place to visit..so much to see and take in..you need a full day to visit..you won't be disappointed
U.
Excellent setup on a huge site. Loads to see and do. Great walks around the site too. Well laid out also. The walk down from the main site to the Riverside and café and museum is just stunning. Very picturesque. Café has a good range of drinks and food. Very reasonably priced too. Staff were all very courteous, friendly & super helpful. Friends of Vindolanda cost us just under £50 for the year. Come as many times as we like. This also allows access to the roman museum along the road too.
D. P.
Really lovely visit despite the rain. Marvellous facilities and lovely landscape. 😍
A. B.
Satnav takes you to the Vindolanda site without a problem. Parking is free. There is a fairly steep downhill walk (quite steep uphill coming back so be warned!!) to the visitor centre. There is a drop off point for people with mobility issues a little closer.
The site covers many acres and nearly 500 years of occupation. There is an archaeological team on site that are happy to engage with questions put to them.
The museum is extensive in size and stocked with many artefacts found over the years.
Admission price is reasonable (10% discount for English Heritage members).
I would suggest trying to pick a day when the weather is set fair given its exposed location.
Thoroughly recommend!!
M. B.
What an experience! Loved talking to the staff -- the stone mason explained what it's like to conserve these ancient stone structures. Completely amazing.
k.
Lots of fun, showing part of our nation's history. Guide was very knowledgeable. Would advise that you visit the roman army museum first, as you can get a sense of life would be like in the town.
J. L.
By far the best of the Roman Forts the Tour Guide was Brilliant and made it fun for the kids the Museum part is a drive away but we'll worth it the kids enjoyed the 3D Cinema.
S. S.
WOW! It's not everyday you visit a live dig! There is still archeologist excavating here. The museum is a must just to see the wall of shoes.
H. W.
loads to see, looked pretty entertaining for kids, the tour guide is recommended. good museum and cafe
D.
Absolutely amazing archeological site that can't be missed by anyone interested in history. The ruins are very well preserved and there are regular guided walks to help you put it all in to context. Across the river (but still on site and included in the entry price) is a lovely cafe and a small but fascinating museum, all in beautifully secluded surroundings. Probably a good half-days visit to do it any justice, and possibly longer if the weather is good and you want to take it slow and make the most of it.
R. S.
Amazing location, great excavations and a beautiful preservation of history on the Isle
A. V.
One of the best sites to see near to Hadrians Wall. It was a town and it also has a good museum about the development of the site. Leave yourself a few hours to view all of it.
c. f.
So much to see. Fantastic.
m.
Mind blowing Roman fort and town. Live archeological dig and site. So much more to discover that will take many years of work.
I'm impressed with the way the team has been working on this project.
Well worth a visit. Very busy right now. June 2022. Book in advance.
K. H.
What an experience very informative, only downside is understanding why the cafe is at the opposite end of the Development from the entrance. Difficult for a disabled person for walking that distance
N. D.
Probably the best Roman Museum I have been to. Fantastic collection of artifacts and active excavation site. Lots to see!!
P. L.
Fascinating view of history really good museum well worth the day out
H. Z.
Great place to visit. Make sure you have got enough time as you need to take a detour and it's easy to spend 2-3 hours there.
M. B.
If you want to see a parts of Hadrian's Wall than this is the place to be. We spent about 2 hours to visit the museum and the site.
A. a. A. E.
Lovely, interesting & educational place to visit. Staff & volunteers very willing to engage in telling the story of the excavations.
B. E.
The museum is a lovely surprise. It's a historic site with amazing displays and much information provided and really interesting facts about the Roman empire. We intended a 15 minute stop but ended up spending 2 hours because it was so fascinating. Staff were very helpful, and there is an endless amount of displays and artifacts from the Roman era. These include writing tablets, and clothes and cutlery and weapons etc from 2000 years ago.
The coffee shop was average, which provided refreshments.
The walk to the historic site is quite long and at a very steep gradient so not good for old people.
Well worth stopping by here, you will enjoy it.
k. g.
Very impressive site. A live dig was in progress at the time of our visit. Good info boards as well as posts where you can press a button for various languages which tell you about the site
S. T.
The museum here was really interesting with a lot of information and items on display. I really liked the fact that the displays discussed different aspects of the site, both the military side and the way people used to live. The ruins were also very cool to walk around, and there were even information boards around so you could get an idea of what the ruin used to be.
D. W.
Great 👍 👍 👍 must do.
A. H.
Excellent archaeological site and museum. Some impressive artifacts and pleasant cafe
g. s.
Fantastic visit on a Bank Holiday Monday ... love this space. Great to see its development been coming here since the 70s 👌
R. L.
Spectacular site and the archeology just keeps coming. The museum is a must visit while there.
T. M.
Lovely surroundings and had a great chat with an archaeologist on site, she was very good with answering my 2 boys questions. Museums that were open were interesting.
K. M.
Enjoyed the museum but I think much more information needs to be given as to parking etc.
T. S.
Our second visit here , very good , excellent museum and very informative tour guide .
K. C.
Need at least 3 hours to do it justice and with Roman Army Museum a full day. Site is impressive in scale alone plus fort reconstruction helps in visualising what it would have been like at the wall nearby. Save the best to last with a great museum with some truly unique exhibits that give you a taste of Roman life.
J. K.
Decent place to visit. Very interesting. Not too difficult to walk the area either.
P. W. (.
Amazing place that exceeded my expectations, especially the museum which contained superb artifacts.
N. L.
Although the fort itself has been razed to knee height, you can make out the outline of most of the buildings and there's a full height replica of part of it. There is also a substantial museum with many unusual items, including a unique set of boxing gloves. Well worth a visit with accessible parts of the Hadrian's Wall only a few miles away.
C. C.
Stunning. Much larger than expected and lovely for the kids to rampage. Very engaged volunteers
C. C.
This place is a must visit if you are interesting in acient british/roman history, at this place you experience everything about the roman occupation of Britain, all exhibits are wonderful presented, this is a very good place for a family excursion with your kids, highly recommended.
A. K.
Huge site, loads to see, staff were great, kids loved exploring. Just be careful with the uneven ground
A. F.
A huge amount of work has improved the museum considerably since I last visited six years ago. Beautiful layout and presentation of exhibits. The cafe is spacious, well appointed and well stocked. Staff were knowledgeable and cheerful. The museum is very child friendly.
A. G.
Short drive from Hexham. Easy to find. Car park almost empty at 10.30. Good price £8 for adults. Really big site mostly pramable. See the archaeologists at work! Interesting museum. Maybe needs to be a bit more 'hands on' for children. Nice looking cafe and gift shop with friendly staff.
j. w.
When we got there was told we could not even walk around the grounds with our dog. So completely a waste of time and devil for us.
M. M.
Fantastic Roman remains. But the museum is even better. World class.
A. T.
Visited on a day of sleet and rain showers but still worth the visit. Another important historical insight onto the early Roman occupation of the UK.
J. N.
Excellent visit bank Holiday Sunday.
Display by the Roman Ermine street Guard.
Exciting History lesson.
H. B.
A fascinating experience. Educational and interesting. Give yourself at least 2-3 hours to look round though it wouldn't be difficult to spend a day there.
C. B.
Very, very cold February day when we were there, and off-season so the museum wasn't open, but stunning site and absolutely fascinating! Cold made us appreciate just how tough a posting it must have been for Mediterranean Roman legionaries!
O. N.
One of the best Roman outdoor museums I have been to. Great guided tour and fabulous museum building in a beautiful setting. Also brilliant value for money especially if you add the army museum in as well.
R. T.
Absolutely worth a visit, fascinating museum especially the writing tablets
K. K.
Great visitors centre and museum, didn't go to cafe.
Wrap up warm
j. p.
It was so lovely to find such a great team so welcoming on a cold day . We had a January holiday it it was amazing how many attractions were closed but this one was half open and got lots of the visitors that day . It would have been nice to have had a drink and another look round. Thank you for a lovely trip
M. T.
I wasn't sure if my kids (4 & 7) would be bored here, but they really enjoyed running around the ruins and playing in the recreated gatehouse. The cafe was nice and the museum had things for the kids to do too. Would highly recommend as a day trip.
P. W.
Fantastic experience, made even better by the most amazing friends not of house lady ever!
H. H.
Great welcome from the lovely friendly staff. We enjoyed our visit. The tea room was lovely and good value too. We really enjoyed the indoor and outdoor experiences. The artefacts were well presented and fascinating 👏
C. R.
If you love Roman history and are excited by archeology, a stop at Vindolanda is definitely worth your wall. Take the free guided tour to add more depth and understanding to this well preserved Roman Fort. And don't forget to leave time for the very well done museum at the back of the property - follow the walking trails back and down the steep hill. There's also a small gift shop and café where you can sit and relax.
M. A.
I'm a repeat customer, so I'll try to keep this as brief as I can: If you've got one stop to make on Hadrian's Wall, you cannot beat Vindolanda. Yes, Housesteads is right along the walk, so do stop in if you're making your way along the Wall itself, but Vindolanda is a live archeological site par excellence, and should not be missed. This is where the only known record of a Roman woman's handwriting was found (now in the British Museum), where you can see volunteer archeologists digging up finds that are changing the view of when the Romans arrived and what they did when they got there, not to mention a complete pair of children's leather slippers, which were only uncovered in 2016. Vindolanda is a private trust, so unfortunately it's a separate ticket from the English Heritage sites on the Wall itself, but worth every penny.
For those asking about accessibility: There is parking down at the museum site itself, so you could move your car after visiting the fort rather than risk the steep hill from the site. Note that a new wing of the museum is opening in early 2018, so apparently it's time to go back -- again!
J. S.
Huge site with ongoing archeological digs but not much in the way of signage (yet?) so difficult to interpret what you're seeing. Best to visit nearby Roman Army museum first which helps to put it in context. Long walk to the cafe - my companion with walking issues struggled.
M. R.
Really wel preserved Roman fort. The information is really clear and well presented and the Museum shows the history of the fort from pre Hadrians wall. The tablet fragments are fascinating and give a real insight into Roman life. Would have liked some more detail on life after the legions lefts but thats a minor quible. Missed a chance to chat to the archaeologist working on the site, maybe next year!
S. O.
Great place to visit, so much history to see. Lovely museum with so many interesting finds. Lovely ladies on reception, well worth a visit!
A. C.
It was great lots to see and walk around it’s an interesting place and managed to get Hadrian’s wall in too which is close by.
J. A.
Fantastic place. Really interesting. There was an open day on our visit where you could chat with the archaeologists about AI study they were doing. Museum is a must, loads of artefacts.
J. E.
Very interesting historical heritage. Lovely cafe and very interesting museum. Nicely laid out.
K. M.
Remains of a Roman frontier Fort and settlement and one of the best museums I have been in. Not only do the trust preserve, but excavate the site and have found fantastic artefacts and evidence of Roman occupation and life. It is a must for those interested in Roman history.I will certainly visit again. No carpark charge and reasonable entry charge. Very highly recommended.
G.
One of the many sites along Hadrians Wall. This particular one is huge, the guys were telling me there are another 150 years worth of excavation here alone.
n. w.
Awesome museum and ruins. Be sure to speak to excavators about what they r finding. Don't miss exciting exhibits including Roman letters from 1900 years ago
M. B.
What a site to visit the Romans didn't mess about and a nice cafe
S. G.
Fantastic museum with good outdoor site too. Well worth the cost.
S. I.
Excellent, well worth a visit. The enthusiasm of the guides, staff and volunteers is infectious and some of the discoveries are simply amazing due to the anaerobic soil conditions e.g. leather tents, shoes, fabrics and the famous writing tablets. It feels like the Romans only just left. Active archaeology is ongoing on the site which can be observed during digging season. I can't wait to go back in a few years time to see what else they discover.
K. D.
A great place to visit. Very informative and a lovely cafe as well . You can spend a full day here looking at the artifacts and wondering around the grounds.
C. S.
Extremely impressive Roman ruins. Tour guide was fascinating to listen to and the museum truly fabulous. I still can't believe how well preserved the items were.
L. F.
Great place if you're into your history, especially Roman
a. g.
Stunning location, excellent information and extensive site. The museum is excellent and it has the largest selection of finds in the area with the wooden tablets with writing still visible after 2000 years is stunning. Excellent reasonably priced food in the cafe is a bonus.
L. M.
Vindolanda is a stunning place to visit with a history that dates back to the occupation of Roman forces in the early A.D period.
Being in a location like Vindolanda is humbling - seeing how far humanity has come, but also how smart builders and architects 2,000 years ago are is astonishing.
Stepping back into history is a favourite pastime of mine, and Vindolanda definitely ticks all the boxes. I will be very interested in finding out more about volunteering in the summer months.
Well worth a visit for anyone interested in history or breathtaking views. It'll take you a good hour and a half of you take your time and read the plaques.
M. C.
The site was a lot bigger than I thought, and a great experience. The guided tour was very good and informative. Would recommend to anyone interested in history and archeology. Museum very well laid out and were advised it had more Roman shoes than anywhere else. Roman community toilets shows how life has changed.
M. G.
Children loved it, museum was one of the best I've been to.
K. F.
Amazing experience of past history, great value and good facilities available .
I. B.
Loved it. An amazing piece of history. Well worth a visit.
S. G.
The Romans were very clever. This is a great historical site. It's amazing they still find artefacts and the tools and things they used haven't changed so much!
K. v.
Large site with well-preserved remains (at foundation level) of Roman fort and civilian settlement. Or rather, successive forts and settlements as the site was occupied for centuries! Good display panels and a helpful, well-informed, enthusiastic volunteer guide. The museum was closed on the day that we visited.
D. K.
Interesting place with well presented artifacts and friendly staff
D. W.
For a person not big on history I found it very interesting with a larger than expected indoor museum and plenty of information. We followed the guide who gave enough information to make it all interesting with some humour thrown in. Staff and people working there were enthusiastic and happy to chat. Cafe was reasonably priced with plenty of seating, perhaps it might be a little more challenging in poor weather, we enjoyed it well done everyone.
R. P.
This well worth the entrance fee, so much to see and the museum and temples at the bottom are a gem.
S. J.
The museum here is really informative and the reconstruction of the turrets bring the site to life. Huge fort and lots still to be found with ongoing excavations
C. M.
Great few hours spent wandering around, very interesting and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole family.
T. P.
Very good value - £7 for an adult for fort and on site museum. Would suggest getting a guide book to get the most out of it, but with the ongoing excavations there is usually something new to see!
K. B.
Absolutely amazing! We'll wroth every penny and an amazing cafe to round off your trip.
Genuinely enthralling because you know everything was found just metres away.
E. L.
So much to see over a large area. Will take a whole day to see everything.
Reconstruction of Hadrian's Wall and many shops etc.
M. C.
Visited on recommendation by our guest house host, glad we did! So much to see plus more being excavated at the time as well!
S. O.
Very exposed when we were there. Very informative and staff so welcoming and helpful. The Roman's certainly did a lot for us. Lovely cafe too
L. A.
Wow!!! What a hidden gem. Absolutely fascinating site of ongoing archaeology, the tour was both informative and extremely entertaining.
B. A.
Fab visit. Good for 2-3 hours with the kids. The cafe was small but decent food. Museum also good.
M. P.
Amazing amount of evidence on the ground and an impressive and informative set of displays in the museum.
G. F.
Wonderful day out, well worth a visit. Great museum and a lovely cafe
W. D.
Fabulous informative place, some amazing fibds
B. H.
One of two parts of the Vindolanda Trust. I found the museum very interesting except the bus load of young adults yelling and play fighting. I am use to children but I could not hear Brian Cox’s narration at times nor the audio on some of the displays.
K. R.
Amazing site .. bring warm weather clothing as it's very cold and windy.
Had lunch at the coffee shop , unfortunately very disappointed with food and drink selections..
But great location and exhibition experience..
Totally incredible what they have found.
L. G.
Lovely place to walk around great history and scenery
b. l.
Vindolanda is an important historical site that I believe everybody in the UK should visit at least once.
H. D.
Fantastic day at Vindolanda.
Alex the tour guide was brilliantly funny, bringing history alive.
K. W.
Brilliant, amazing and well worth the entrance fee. Give yourself plenty of time to look around, it's enormous!!
L. H.
Huge collection of amazing artefacts, very well explained and displayed and lower parts of the walls of the fort and many buildings, roads, shops, bath house etc, recreation of a mile castle.
T. S.
Great site to visit. So much to see. Excellent museum, shop and coffee shop. Coping well with the COVID restrictions. 2 entrances with one close to museum if unable to walk far.
C. L.
Really interesting. I am amazed by the state of some of the most delicate artifacts! There was a beautiful lace hairnet that defied time and a leather mouse which made us all smile - fantastic.
B. C.
Amazing historical artifacts, a must for all passionate about archaeology and architecture. A good afternoon when combined with the Roman Army Museum.
J. H.
I was only able to spend a very short time here. Nevertheless, what I saw was astonishing. I must return - very soon.
F. O.
Great place for the whole day. Went to the site first and the Army Museum second. Would definitely recommend to all who are steady on their feet.
J. S.
Much bigger than anticipated. Interesting setting outdoors and indoors. Lots of information dotted around or you can buy a guide. Extremely good quality food in cafe. Unfortunately it was a very wet and windy day and I was too cold to take it all in. So either wrap up warm and waterproof in the winter.
l. p.
Absolutely massive place to walk around with a cafe for food and drink.
L. S.
Excellent place to visit especially if you like Roman history
C. B.
Massive old roman settlement great mooch round loads of info. Cafe has great food museums are good we spent around 3 hours there it's huge!!
N. F.
Remains of a large ancient (approx. 1900 years old) Roman Fort here, behind tourist centre, adult price to pay is £9 & some visitors felt well worth spending 2 hours here
H. D.
Excellent experience with museum. Vast area easy to get around all well explained. Food and drink first class too.
C. o.
A great place to visit and great value. Everywhere is accessible to see what it was like all those years ago. Also a brilliant museum with many artefacts to look at.
M. L.
A great indoor & outdoor museum, without being overpriced.
The Tour guide was great, just enough interesting information to bring the history to life.
The cafe food was excellent quality and reasonably priced.
Well worth a visit.
B. F.
Visited with small group of five and can't say I was looking forward to it not my thing. However arrived in time to join a tour lead by a volunteer.Must say I really enjoyed the tour and visit .Well worth it.
C. C.
Last time we went it was winter and cold, raining and windy so we didn't go in. Went yesterday in glorious sunshine and stayed 3 hours. Really interesting excavation and a jewel of a museum underground at the rear with cafe and lovely seating area. Not obvious when you go into the site but worth walking too. Brilliant place for anyone interested in history and for kids to learn about Roman life. Can't rate it highly enough.
C. D.
Amazing excavation work, and the tour guide, Alex, was very funny. It's remarkable what they've found at the site, all displayed in the museum. The cafe was a perfect way to top it all off as well.
A. W.
Wonderful place to visit with really friendly staff including on the live dig site
R. M.
Very interesting and the people on site couldn't be more helpful if they tried. If you have a wheel chair user you can still access the site without too much difficulty but it can be hilly in places so make sure you have a strong pair of arms with you for the more difficult bits.
S. B.
Amazing day out, very very interesting and definitely worth a visit
C. C.
Really interesting, brought my school boy knowledge to life 50 years later!
N. M.
A great hidden gem of Roman history!
V. M.
I like to visit those places that I only ever read about in books and Vindolanda did not disappoint.
T. R.
What a lovely day some great reconstruction's and the museum is excellent
B. D.
Fascinating remains and excellently presented. Extensive museum.
D. G.
Tremendous practical learning experience - Guides knowledgeable, Volunteers helpful and happy to discuss/share their experiences
S. W.
Lovely place for a relax or gentle stroll along Hadrian's wall
K. N.
If you're interested, even mildly in roman history in Britain this is a great place to go. The guide book is essential reading both during and after the visit, to help enter the lives of the people who lived here almost 200 years ago. It's a moving tribute to human perseverance and tenacity made even more profound by the letters, shoes and personal items found in the museum. We only spent about 90mins here, including a trip to the cafe, as we were passing and thought we'd take a quick look. But we will have to go back and visit the other sites associated with Vindolanda to really take in the full experience. Well worth a trip.
H. A.
Superb site with so much information and visible archeology, we love it! Excellent reconstructions of the mile forts and wall, really bring history to life.
C. N.
Very good value for money, highly recommend the joint ticket with Roman Fort museum. Extremely interesting, excellent film and interactive information which gave an excellent idea of life Roman life in those times. Excellent tour guide. Allow all day for both sites.
Delicious and reasonably priced food at the café.
R. C.
Amazing place! So much fantastic history in one spot. A great day for anyone interested in Roman history
R. H.
I hadn't been here for years and it has had a complete revamp. New visitors centre and cafe, and a museum that has great artifacts from the site. It truly brings the history and site to life. Well worth a visit, we went late afternoon and had much of it to ourselves.
K. B.
Walking from the reception block to the outside view if the site was a real “wow” moment for me. The site was much more extensive than I had expected.
The tour guide was incredibly interesting and knowledgeable. Overall the best historical site I have visited in the UK.
J. W.
Both Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum are worth a visit to explore an amazing period in our history. Staff were exceptionally helpful and pleasant
K. M.
Well worth a visit. We joined a guide who was informative interesting and very passionate (paul) and knowledgeable and engaging. We learnt loads from him. We stayed for 5 hours and enjoyed every minute. The excavations are vast, so much to see. There are talking posts dotted around which give more info . The museum is filled with artefacts found at the site. An amazing day out. Highly recommended
P. B.
Interesting site, try to catch one of the very good and informative (free) guided tours which last about 45 mins. Do visit the excellent museum and the cafe looks great too. Combine it with a visit to the excellent and nearby Roman Army museum.
J. N.
One of the most significant Roman sites in the country. The tour was informed and free. Don't miss the museum.
k. h.
If you are interested then definitely worth a visit for sure.
G. P.
Vindolanda is a "must see" if you have any interest at all in Roman-era Britain. The site is extensive and well-presented, the archaeologists on site are friendly and very willing to talk to visitors, and the museum is absolutely superb (fabulous artefacts presented superbly, and bang-up-to-date in information & interpretation). We particularly liked the new post-Roman material. The cafe is very good, too, albeit a bit small for the number of visitors. Highly recommended - you should allow a minimum two hours for the visit.
J. E.
Good day out
K. B.
Be prepared to spend several hours here looking round this excavated and well presented site. Good food n drinks available at the cafe with indoor and outdoor seating.
I. N.
Great value, lots to see and explore and fabulously informative tour guide (Paul)
R. E.
Should have visited years ago. Kids loved the museum.
S. I.
Absolutely ace day out. Very friendly and relaxed. Cafe and gift shop 100% better at Vindolanda over Roman Army museum. Worth doing both, Roman Army first then spend rest of day at Vindolanda and have your lunch etc there. 100% recommended
S. C.
Well laid out information on grounds. Unfortunately the museum wasn't open when we were there. Well worth the money paid. Staff very helpful.
P. R.
Amazing fortress remains. Excellent interpretive sections. Fine cafe. Very nice staff. But dogs not allowed so only 4 stars.
L. T.
One of the greatest sites to see if you're travelling along the wall (and a hugely important site nationally). We've visited three times over that last 20 years and the way that the site has grown over the years has been marvellous to witness.
M. E.
Very interesting. Went on a hot day so great exploring the outside excavation area and then really lovely exploring the cool inside museum. The children loved seeing the shoes and writing tablets and climbing the steps of the replica wall towers. We enjoyed a shady picnic with hot drinks from the cafe.
C. W.
Absolute must see. Amazing value when using the Saver tickets which give you access to both Vindolanda and the Roman museum down the road. The onsite staff are super friendly and happy to give you insider tips as they go about their business.
B. M.
Spectacular ruins in a beautiful setting. The museum has some great exhibits and would worth visiting even without the standing remains.
T. M.
The history of Hadrian starts here with the wall and forts, lots of interesting facts and things to see
M. J.
Absolutely fabulous place to visit, lovely food served in restaurant,
T. R.
Brilliant place to learn about hadrians wall
L. H.
Marvellous site for anyone interested in Roman history. Excellent museum with some superb artefacts, well displayed and informative too. Cafe offers light lunches and snacks, and hot drinks to warm visitors
C. B.
Interesting Roman site with some lovely staff and an informative museum at a very reasonable price. Completely lost track of time and the cafe closed before we got chance to try it but I'm told it's very nice too
C. J.
This is a terrific fort plus a world class museum to experience. Not only do you have the stone fort and village (vicus) which are on display you also have other layers of history to discover. There are, in fact, 9 forts there that the archaeologists have found to date: 7 timber forts and 2 stone forts. There may be more - who knows! The archaeologists are working hard to find out. They say they have another 250 years to go (at least).
The museum shows off the finds/artefacts of Roman Vindolanda. You will see leather shoes galore; weaponry; horse bling and paraphernalia. There are jewellery, coins, statues, high status pottery, the famous Vindolanda tablets.
The tablets are magnificent and give us so much information about life in the military and the domestic arena too.
Correspondence about birthday parties, hunting parties, complaints, recipes, financial wheelings and dealings. There are many, many more tablets being deciphered and many more to be found (hopefully).
You need at least half a day to explore this site and museum properly. Spend all day there and enjoy the cafe and bookshop too. There is a lot to see and take in. You are in for a treat!
K. R.
Big sprawling site and a really interesting museum. Some of the finds are truly amazing and a real insight into Roman life.
T. A.
Incredible facility. The museum is full of artefacts from the site which give a great insight in to the history and people who lived there. Easily half a day here. Tea room was excellent, well priced and tasty.
S. C.
Impressively large Roman village/ fort area to explore outside. We followed with a cafe break, then the museum full of artefacts found on the site. Gives a picture of everyday life on the northern frontier, really interesting. Managed to engage 9 and 13 year old also, mostly.
D. S.
Fantastic picture of history.
A. L.
This was an incredibly interesting walk through history. Educational and lovely.
P. A. A.
A great legacy of roman Britain and the northern border of the roman empire. Thanks to the site's anaerobic characteristics, a lot of tablets and shoes have been preserved which can be viewed at the museum. Really worth it
D.
Amazing step back in time. Not just one Roman fort but 8 or 9 built on top of each other. Great to be able to chat to the archeologists digging new areas of the site. If visiting the wall, a trip to Vindolanda is essential.
T. F.
Passing by on cycle route 72. Would have liked to stop for a coffee. Could only do this by paying the full entrance fee + coffee fee. Ridiculous! Will not return.
D. L.
One day is not enough to see everything. Very educational and a massive site.
Brilliant Staff very helpful and knowledgeable.
Food was amazing in the museum part as well, made the climb out the glen harder 😅
l. k.
Wanted to visit this exciting museum with a difference. Ongoing excavations. Not disappointed. Exhibits presented in a clear informative way. Allow a day if possible but minimum 4 hours.
M. B.
Staff is very welcoming. One of the clearest Roman remains along the Hadrians Wall. They have a museum and a entertaining book shop as well as souvenirs. Coffee place is good. Also good for kids if they are interested in history. And then maybe have a family dinner at Twice Brewed afterwards? Sounds like a good day out!
T. P.
Great 1 hour tour with guide Andy. A large group but could hear his every word. Nice recreated fortlet and little temple, and super museum. A wonderful afternoon!
S. H.
We visited on Wednesday 1st September and we joined Paul’s tour. He was extremely good at imparting information and obviously had a huge knowledge of his subject, it really came alive. He also gave us great advice as to the best bit of Hadrian’s Wall to walk, which we did and it really did live up to his description. Vindolanda is a great place to visit, you could easily spend all day there. The museum was fascinating and the cafe was excellent.
R. B.
Fascinating place with so much to absorb and explore. The museum artefacts are nothing short of incredible. Highly recommended.
D. S.
This place was magical, it was full of amazing history and relics.
P. M.
Perfect trip and place for all day.Ideal to visit this place in the morning and stay all day and just chill because this place is awesome:)
P. C.
Such an enjoyable and interesting afternoon. Great to see excavations still happening. Great museum. A place to definitely visit. Very nice staff too
A. B.
Great site, nice museum and cafe
R. G.
We loved Vindolanda and would highly recommend it to anyone that is travelling in the area that has even the slightest interest in Roman history in England
J. B.
Such a high quality museum of artefacts and a great tour
A. M.
One of the best preserved fortresses on Hadrian's wall how advanced the Romans where sanitation heating community well with a visit
a. a.
The museum showing shoes and the famous tablets were fabulous and brought the remains alive
E. R.
Great place for adults and kids stroll at your own leisure
H. S.
Great place to visit, especially if you're interested in Roman history in England or archaeology. I strongly advise you to get the guide or visit with an archeologist who can explain what you are looking at.
Warning: Vindolanda is not actually ON Hadrian's wall (it is a few miles South of the wall), but there is quite an imposing reconstruction.
J. S.
A great historical site with loads of information and helpful staff too. Set in lovely grounds with a cafe and museum. Cafe was a bit hit and miss, was told that lipstick on my cup was supposed to be there!
S. D.
Great day out. Lots to see, good museum.
K. B.
Fabulous place. Staff are lovely and full of information. Please help the catering staff by clearing your trays, they were working their fingers to the bone for very little thanks and were doing a fantastic job. Really recommend a visit.
L. H.
It was cold and windy but worthwhile to look at the site if one of the Roman forts along Hadrian's wall.
A. L.
Fabulous! Lovely reasonably priced cafe, friendly staff and a beautiful museum. Don’t forget to visit the Roman Army Museum a few miles away. I wish we’d had more time to explore this amazing place.
B. M.
Amazing history, museum and cafe . A must visit location in Northumberland
M. B.
A remarkable Roman history in England! This is worthy of a visit along with the museum. Very worthwhile!
S. S.
Interesting. Well developed site of historical interest. Usefu Information points and specific building labels/functions. A site continually under excavation. Museum contains many many artects which have been found on the site. Great cafe.
c. c.
Must see remnants of a Roman settlement with superb brand new visitor centre.
A. H.
Superb, we were very lucky as the weather was great. There is a lot to see, the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The museum contains so many artifacts.
N. G.
Good example of roman fort site
T. W.
Extensive Roman ruins put in context by useful information boards and a museum of finds from the site. Of the famous Vindolanda tablets, only eight are actually in the museum here - each is covered well, but it's a small exhibit. Main disappointment for us was that dogs are not allowed on site.
r. S.
We went here after the Roman War Museum and in combination they were good value for money. Lots to see and our children loved running around and exploring the castle and the ruins.
E. L.
Great value for money including the cafe . Very interesting place to visit
A. P.
What a lovely place. Staff were awesome and great with my young kids who had their own "tickets" and wanted their own maps etc. Info signs could have had more info on some. But over a really great day. We expected to be done in about 2-3 hours but eneded up spending over 4. The kids really enjoyed exploring and pretending to cook in the ruins where we discovered the kitchen was etc. Good shop and cafe. Shop a little over priced but if it helps continue the work they are doing then we are okay with that.
B. W.
Superb interesting area with lots of remains of historical interest. At the time of writing an archaeological dig was taking place and we were shown 2 artefacts discovered while we were there. A very well organised site.
D. H.
Off the main road but really worthwhile. Makes you wonder what else is under the ground
E. W.
Brilliant place, but make sure to check the weather before coming as it's a far better experience when its sunny.
A. R.
Fascinating Roman site with live archaeological excavations happening. Very friendly staff there. Well worth the visit and explore. Can leave the car in the carpark if wanted to go on a hike further afield. Saves paying at the Sill/Homestead etc as well
S.
Not been since school days a few decades ago, how it has changed!
Very interesting place, more discoveries all the time.
Good museum and a very good cafe area even during Covid restrictions.
P. S.
Stunning place slowly getting revealed over the decades. Breathtaking museum. Food exceptional value. Bit disappointed that it's taken nigh on 60 years to visit..
J. M.
Great day out. Fort is v. extensive and a nice reconstructed wall section too. Museum really helped to put in context and overall grabbed the attention of our 5 year old. Little cafe was also fine (but don't expect big meals) and gift shop decent too.
S. R.
Exceptional visit very close to where we were staying. A large area of archeology already exposed with more to come. On site archeologists were a delight and of course very knowledgeable. We felt a bit guilty interrupting their work but they seemed immensely proud of what they were doing, rightly so. And once we found it, the restaurant was a treat overlooking an outdoor museum. Shame that dogs were not allowed on site, but our grandson had a wonderful time exploring the walls
s. c.
It was raining a bit when I visited today but if you like Roman history this place is just fantastic.
B. S.
Fantastic place, it's a must visit if you're interested in the history of Britain in the Roman era
L. R.
Beautifully preserved and still an ongoing archaeological dig, so really fascinating. Lovely café with great and diverse food. Museum is really well laid out with some brilliant exhibits
P. T.
Really worth a visit. The site is very well kept, it is in a beautiful location and the artefacts displayed in the museum are amazing ( I am from Rome, I have seen many Roman museums... I was truly impressed by this one!)
J. R.
Very enjoyable walk around the ruins and the museum has a good selection of information and facts about Romans. Highly recommend if you want a day out and want to learn something new. The cafe is really nice but slightly expensive so might be worth bringing your own food.
K. C.
Really loved it well signed Roman Fort. Great museum with stunning exhibits all well detailed we had a really great day the only way to make it better would be to stop the rain. Working archeologists were very interesting and very happy to answer questions. Very happy to go back again soon
E. W.
Vindolanda was outstanding! As a lover of archaeology, everything just oozed history, and the museum is fantastic.
B. R.
The size of the whole site is enormous and we quickly realised there was never going to be enough time to see everything.
The guides we met were incredibly knowledgeable and informative which we found a brilliant accompaniment to our visit.
The weather was not the best but the excellent cafe was very welcome with a good choice on offer.
In summary, if you are in the area, do not miss a visit to the site. It's awe inspiring.
W. M.
2 hours was just not enough to explore this massive expanse of Roman ingenuity.
b.
A really amazing and educational place of archeological importance , the fort and archeologists digging for any clues to the history within the fort are very interesting to see . The museum holds many items and all the history of this fort near to Hadriens wall . A good family afternoon out and great well priced cafe
G. G.
Fascinating place ! There's lots to see on the site and also a wide range of artefacts to see in the museum. We would've liked to spend longer there we didn't get chance to read everything in the museum thoroughly, there are videos and explanations playing constantly. We had to leave the dogs in the car. It was a chilly day so not a problem but then we didn't want to leave them too long. If we were in the area again i would definitely return. It's well worth the entrance fee
C. B.
Very good for anyone interested in Romans, Roman Britain or History in general.
k. r.
Great place, only thing is in this day and age they need free WiFi in cafe, signal not strong enough for office so to the public its not available, so you can check in and promote the place, great place tho.
D. B.
A great place for kids and adults. The museum is amazing, the artifacts are very rare because the soil type has preserved them. The size of the fort and area are large. Would definitely recommend this.
M. G.
The museum was very good, lots of very interesting artifacts, we'll set out. Cafe was just what we needed on a wet day. More information boards would have been helpful around the site and things for children to read about the children in the Roman times would have kept them more entertained.
H. R.
Fascinating place to spend a couple of hours wondering round. I missed the archeology in process as it was research week and really bad weather, but a great place none the less. Cafe good and needed by the time you get down there. Gift shop is a gift shop! Museum is informative.
Love the saver ticket with Roman army museum. Good value.
B. W.
Really enjoyable family day out. We had an excellent tour with a very interesting and informative guide.
D. O.
Great place to visit with stunning surroundings - be sure to bring a rain coat though cause 8t literally comes from nowhere 😂☔☔☔
C. P.
Fantastic guide, wonderful museum
L. B.
Amazing! This is an absolute must visit if you are in the area. I was actually a little overwhelmed just being able to stand within this historic area. The staff are super friendly and informative.
G. P.
One of the best days out we have had in a long time. Educating, inspirational and thought provoking.
H. J.
What a beautiful place. I'd pay entry just to take a book and sit by the stream. The museum was very informative and really enjoyed walking around the ruins.
S. K.
Great fort and impressive museum!
K. S.
Fantastic experiance of Roman life. Nice cafe Museum and gardens down the hill. If you can get a saver ticket to go to the Roman Arm Museum about 2.5 miles away
S. G.
Good place to visit. A large area is outside, for the excavation, then the museum and coffee shop are after that, down a steep hill. It really is in the middle of nowhere!
J. “. S.
Loved our trip to Vindolanda, so much to see loved the experience of actually seeing such well preserved artefacts from the day to day living of the original settlers.
What an amazing achievement from the archaeologists and volunteers, exposing and discovering after so many years of patience and painstakingly delicate searching, such a treasure trove of items.
Thanks to them we can imagine and feel what the hustle and bustle of the place during, Roman Times, must have been like.
If you love your history well worth a visit the countryside is beautiful with some good walks.
A. -.
Awesome place to visit if into history....but the recommended 2 hours for a visit it too short...a whole day would be better!
A. S.
Really interesting place to visit, the kids had a fantastic time learning about the history of the Romans, we even paid a visit to the Roman museum. Fab!
P. T.
Excellent site full of information and a well laid out plan. The guide was really knowledgeable as well. We'll woth a visit
