Reviews of Chinese Bell Tower

Victoria Chinese bell tower with a chequered history. It was designed in 1857 by Marriott Ogle Tarbotton as a war memorial and built in 1862.
Two of the cannons were captured at Sebastopol in 1854-55, during the Crimean war, with the other two are replicas. The bell was looted by British troops from a temple in Canton during the Anglo-Chinese war (Opium War) of 1857-61. In 1956 the pagoda was partly demolished and the bell was moved to the regimental museum in Preston.

Interesting object. Adds attractivity to the walks in arboretum.

A harmonious atmosphere interspersed with flower beds, a pond and a great variety of flowers, makes it an amazing experience in nature. I greatly enjoyed walking on paths lined with ample trees while being immersed in the green all around. Chinese Bell Tower looked awesome among the plants as well adding a bit of historical highlights to the whole natural surroundings

I walk around the Arboretum most Sundays with my dog and it's a pity that the Chinese canons get vandalised and graffitied on by people who don't give a damn. A great place to be on a warm or cold sunny day.

A beautiful monument in a lovely location but spoilt by a lot of litter after a Saturday night crowd I expect.

One of the must visit parks in Nottingham. Especially during autumn and spring , the scenery is amazing !

Who knew? A memorial to the opium wars complete with a captured bell from China in 1850s. 4 Russian cannons from another war. Interesting monument although the explanation notice rather judgmental.

It is a shame that you cannot get up close.
