Reviews of Carfax Tower
K. H.
Considering I came on a day when the weather was unpredictable, I waited at just the right time and caught stunning views of Oxford. For £3 it gives you a truly breathtaking experience. I love Oxford! It might be noted if you have the open top bus tour ticket, I think from the silver ticket option, you can climb the tower free. It is very steep and narrow so isn’t suitable for people with mobility issues. Have a go, it’s definitely worth it.
J. P.
Fantastic views for just £3! I would suggest going up in the late afternoon to have the sun behind you as you take photos of High Street to the east. Loved the spiral staircase to the top.
S. F.
Reasonably priced at £3 per person with good views over Oxford. There are a few information panels part way up the tower with a short overview of it's history. Worth checking out, but it's a short visit - shouldn't take more than half an hour.
A. F.
Didn't seem tall from the bottom but actually has a nice view around town. Halfway up you can find out about the history of the place throughout the centuries.
Stairs are very narrow so tall people be aware and duck down your head.
It's ok that they charge 3£ if this helps to maintain the tower. However it's a short stay of about 15 min.
R. G.
We enjoyed our climb up the staircase. The view is breathtaking - Oxford from above looks stunning! Be aware of opening and closing times!
A. B.
Well worth it tough walk up for my height but fab experience. The lead roof at the top has been scribbled on by past visitors
s. s.
Almost the center of Oxford. Great view of the city on a clear day from top of the tower. Good place to visit in Oxford for photography and to know more about the rich history and traditions of Oxford.
A. M. I.
Super nice place to visit whe in Oxford!! With just 3 £ you climb 99 steps and you're up on the tower to enjoy an amazing view of the city!!
G. G.
Carfax tower the icon of oxford!
its the first thing you see when you get off the local buses. its reliable for the time (when its working, have caught it a few times stop working)
The view is good, if you like the top of buildings/pipes/satellite dishes.
BUT if you look beyond all that you can see how Oxford is in a nice valley, the high hills in distance is beautiful. you also get a nice view of the different college towers too.
O. S.
Best view of the high street and the town from the top of the tower. Must visit when around. £3 for the ticket.
r. m.
It's a good to place to be able to catch a good view of Oxford, you can pay on entry and you must be prepared to climb the stairs, there is a binoculars which makes it possible to see buildings and objects a far ends, both cash and cards is acceptable. The customer service is good.
M. N.
An amazing view of Oxford , and a great historic site
g. a.
If you have a City tour ticket you might get a discount. Stairs inside the tour are very narrow. Nice view of street below from top of the tower on the one side, mostly roof tops on the other side.
P. F.
Went to Oxford for a business trip and had few hours extra to myself so I looked for things to do and found this place. It was beautiful and lovely (and difficult) stairs but well worth the view at top.
N. V.
Worth to ho upstairs. If not too busy.
T. J.
The attendant was amazing. After going in to book a slot, there was only the last of the day available (4 or so hours later) I'd popped back to check with the family it was Ok, and by the time I went back in, another couple were also trying to book. The attendant kindly told this couple that technically I'd bagged the last slot, which she really didn't have to have done. We returned and thoroughly enjoyed our climb to the summit and the city's views were amazing.
M. M.
This 13th Century Tower is well worth visiting for the fine views from the top, of the churches and spires that pierce the Oxford skyline.
It's £3 entry and access via a narrow staircase. The Covid restriction are reassuring strike, so much so that only one group "bubble" are allowed up at a time. Since I was by myself, only I went to the top whilst a group of four waited 15 mins until I came back down. Plenty of sanitizer available which you are encouraged to use.
j. m.
Love a good tower fir the view at the top. Spiral staircase and narrow but very doable.
R. E.
In my opinion is the second best place to get a great view to Oxford city.
There are lots of steps (over 100 if I'm not wrong), but the climb is worth it. And the best: no wire screens obstructing the view, which makes it possible to take wonderful photos.
A. N.
Magnificent view from the top of the tower! Please visit when it's sunny day 😊
W. P.
It's fun, but I expected more at the time I visited. They could have a guide to tell some interesting stories and maybe give a souvenir to visitors. That place is a key attraction in Oxford. Perhaps they should hire one of those guides from Oxford University.
L. S.
Probably the most spectacular view over Oxford. Great photography opportunities, just beware the tight space ascending the stairs 😀
j. r.
Nothing too exciting. It's a tower in Oxford. I went yesterday in the teaming rain. Not fun. Try it on a sunny day amd see if you have a better time. I will wait for your review. Have fun.mmm!
I. W.
Set at the centre of the city, where Cornmarket Street, Queen Street and St Aldate's meet The High (as the High Street is known by the locals), Carfax Tower is interesting for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it has a clock with animated figures who strike two bells on the hour and every quarter of an hour.
Secondly if you can manage the climb there are great views of the city from the top. Not for those who suffer from vertigo or who are not fit!
Thirdly it is easy to find as a meeting place!
s. c.
Nice experience and in the center of town had historical value too, would be a good place for the kids to learn or romantic day for a couple! Food available next door!
T. M.
Great view of the Oxford skyline from this Norman tower... 99 steps to the viewing area on the roof of Catax tower.
J. B.
Some beautiful old buildings in Oxford...
K. G.
I like the old style coffee shop at the base, reasonable prices for the centre of Oxford.
K. S.
A 13th century tower, being the remains of the St Martin's Church. It's central location makes you see it all the time by walking through Queen St, High St and Cornmarket. Nice view across the city when up the tower.
D. M.
Part of the old Oxford City defenses, an interesting revenant of this forgotten part of history.
A. L. S.
Lovely landmark! You can climb up to the roof for some change.
C. C.
One of the best ways to see Oxford from above. The stairs to the top are a bit tight and tiring and should be done on your arrival.
T. O. G.
One of the few options to get up high in Oxford & if there is an option to get up high in a place, I always take it!
T. O. T. D. Y.
Great views of the ciry from the top. A nice diversion for half an hour, priced sensibly.
D. P.
Beautiful place, a bit expensive though (7£ general entrance). Unless you come with a Oxford student, which it’s free then for two guests. I wanted to meet the dinner hall but bare in mind that it is not always open.
S. C.
Well worth £3. Great views from the top.
m. k.
Cheap but limited in appeal ...very narrow spiral staircase ... For both up & down to share ...only takes single slim person
C. L.
The cafe here do lovely cakes, and the staff are just the right amount of friendly.
N. Y.
Though the entry may cost 3£, it’s worthy paying for it as it may help one understand the size of Oxford when visiting for the first time.
G. M.
Not the best but not the worst place. Is only £3 to see this view and do some exercise on the stairs as they are 99 and very very very narrow. But overall it was fun.
G. L.
Excellent for taking photographs from the roof. Otherwise somewhat mundane!
A. R.
Fabulous views over Oxford up a very old tower!
M. T.
I recommend buying tickets in advance, it was a really lovely place
T. A. -. F. L.
Carfax Tower is one of the most important tower in Oxford city. Though the name Carfax is often used to refer to the tower, it is actually the name of the crossroads where the St Martin's Tower (the real name of the Carfax Tower) stands. The Tower is all that remains of the 12th century St. Martin's Church. Carfax Tower is open year-round (with shorter hours in winter) for anyone fits enough to climb the tower, and there is a small charge. The view from the top is quite amazing.
N. S.
99 steps, not to difficult also for children. Nice view of the city center.
I. S.
Great views of Oxford. Entrance 2 pounds 40 well worth it
d. l.
Great place to see if you are in Oxford as you can see their is a pub and also the old prison
R. S.
In the centre of Oxford with outside seating. i will recommend it is worth waiting for the outside seating if there is sun 🌞
S. S.
Centre point of Oxford's High Street, Corn market Street, Queen Street and St Aldates shopping area, supported by the entire surrounding city.
P. R.
Reasonable entry price and careful control of how many are using it. Views are good across the rooftops of oxford. Staircase is very narrow so if you Rare over 6 ft or have a large frame you might struggle to climb to the top
F. L. F.
Good view of the city centre. Worth the visit
M. M.
A little expensive for what it is...some obstructed views of the city but nice ones on the other side...observation point is very small but it is an older building so that explains it...check it out ...
P. K.
Nice place and also recommended is Fernando cafe next to it 🙂
A. G.
Narrow stairs to see the city from above for a small fee if you're interested!
G. R.
This corner is one of the busiest places in Oxford. You can take buses to everywhere around here, including London. There’s is lots of bus stops in St. Aldates and High Street. Westgate shopping Center is just one block distance.
P. M.
Awsome views of Oxford pretty steep walk up but worth it
K. N.
Very big part of Oxford and great focal point.
F.
The Big Ben of Oxford.
K. S.
Historic building, it is nice place to visit
G. J.
Lovely ringing this evening from The Cheltenham Minster Bell ringers.🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔
D. T.
Good views of Oxford from the top.
W. S.
Great views from the top. Narrow staircase makes the journey to the top interesting. The brief history of the tower is fascinating.
A. A.
For £2.75 you can go up the tower and see Oxford from above and read some history about Carfax tower. Not a bad deal.
B. M.
Good experience for youngsters as it include climbing steps
S. W.
It was very wet but well worth the view from the top - we will be returning on a sunny day to see the whole of Oxford from on high!
A. T.
Not much to this. It's an historic, old tower. Narrow spiral stairs to the top. Decent view of a small portion of Oxford. Not much else.
L. P.
One of the Oxford's best sightseeing places!
Be prepared to climb almost a hundred steps in a narrow and old staircase, even that it's a property experience on its own
K. D.
Oxford is a nice city for a day out. Lots to see and do. Went to the tower, its old to say the least but did not go inside. Too much to do in one day. Best to take the park and ride if going by car as its Around £6 for parking and the shuttle to/from town for 2 adults and up to 3 children.
C. I.
Saint Martin sharing his coat with a poor man in winter is a very fitting sculpture above this arch leading to a place of modern hospitality at the crossroads of Oxford's busy city centre.
M. W.
Although I didn't walk up this tower but I love the design of it.
S. L.
St Martin's Tower, popularly called Carfax Tower is on the northwest corner of Carfax.
The tower is 23 m tall, and no building in central Oxford may be built higher than Carfax
H. B. A. B.
I like to visit that place. A good place to walk and there’s a lot of stores and pubs around
C. B.
A lovely pld tower in the centre of Oxford.
C. R.
It's always worth a quick trip up the tower with any visitors new to Oxford. The views are lovely and the tickets are very cheap. The incredibly narrow, winding staircase isn't for the fainthearted though so have a look at it first before handing your money over! ;0
p. g.
Check out the view from 99 steps up then go for cortado to the super friendly Brazilian cafe next door
M. S.
Nice view from the tower.
G. G.
Oxford - City with 900 years of students life 👍
T. T.
Great spot to see city centre from above. Spiral staircase. Good customer service. Fine with entrance price. Amazing opportunity to observe nature and surrounding in every season. Will go again.
A. M.
A great place to visit whilst in Oxford. It cost me £2.70 to go up. Well worth it. Great views across the whole city. The spiral stair case is a bit of a tight squeeze though.
M. C.
Worth checking out in Oxford. It's like £3 to go to the top and is taller than any of the other towers in Oxford. Get a nice view of the city and the surrounding greenery. Stop in while you're walking down makn street.
Dont plan on staying here for longer than 15-1
20 minutes. Just enough to take in the view and maybe enjoy the weather if its nice.
I've included my view of the top!
J. R.
Anything about York is beautiful. Love wandering around the cobbled streets, with one delightful building after another. Remember to look up! Sometimes the most beautiful part of the building has the oldest and best architecture.
A. O.
Must see place in Oxford. The entrance is cheap and you have a good view on the city from the top.
I feel like it could be exploited better. There are really few notes on its history, it would be nice to learn something more on it while visiting.
N. A.
Nice tower with lots of steps fabulous views. Of Oxford City. Absolutely the heart of Oxford.
A. L.
Very cheap fee to get to climb the tower, there is a set of (allegedly) 99 steps, which are extremely steep (so if you are scared of heights, I recommend you do not climb). Once you are at the top, there is a small platform for you to walk around in and look around. There is no railing, but the ledge is high enough so that it is safe. It sometimes gets a bit crowded but this is the highest tower in the area, so from here you will be able to see the whole Oxford.
D. b. w.
Beautiful history
E. J.
Awesome views from the top. However since it's become a tourist attraction it is usually very busy. The man on the desk was rude and patronising. At the time I went, under 15s were not allowed up unaccompanied (due to insurance apparently).
b. w.
A historical Tower looking over the beautiful city of Oxford a must see. Got to climb stairs to top of Tower. Unfortunately not for disabled but beautiful to look at and the ancient clock chimes on the hour.
A. B. (.
Nice visit to the rooftops of Oxford! Robust spiral staircase in metal and stone higher up gives access to the roof area of the tower. Panoramic view of Oxford skyline and great for a 360° photo. Gives you a very good idea of how Oxford is laid out.
Resting places at regular intervals allow you to catch your breath if need be and allow other people to pass easily. Narrow staircase but not too narrow to allow people to pass safely.
Interesting displays of artefacts such as ancient documents and silverware to look at on the way up the tower. Probably 40 minutes is more than enough time to look at all the artefacts, pausing a few minutes at each floor and a bit of time at the top to take as many photos as you want. £3~
R. I.
A must visit point in Oxford. There you can have a plain sight of all the surroundings. Plus have an amazing staircase that's go round and round. A historical place with a small museum. Really good for pictures, selfies and for a refreshing wind. An obrigatory Point to know Oxford better from a privileged point of view.
M. P.
The view was fantastic!!
K. Y.
Good way to spend half an hour. 99 steps to the top but worth it for the views from the top.
S. S.
Beautiful clock tower (both inside and outside) and a nice big square. Close to everything. A great place to meet when in Oxford. By paying around 3£ you can climb to the top of the tower. The wiews are gorgeus, worth a visit.
L. J.
Essentially a staircase leading upwards, followed by a room full of information regarding the structure, followed by stairs then leading to the roof. The roof has a great view but the experience is quite underwhelming.
k. p.
Beautiful tower, captivating by the huge narrow stairs resembling native Torun. Getting to the top is rewarded with a beautiful view of the city from the bird's eye view. You can purchase guides in many languages on the tower.
K. B.
The finest view in oxford:)
P. S.
I wish I could go inside (I don't know if there is such possibility). This is the point from where all distances are measured in Oxford. Wonderful piece of (bloody and dramatic) history where both locals and student lost their lifes
K. Y. K.
This is a famous landmark right at the centre of Oxford. Also known as St Martin's tower, it is the tallest structure in the junction of the popular cornmarket street, high street , queen street and St Aldate's street. It is opened from 10am to 5.30pm, and visitors can climb up to the top to have a bird eyes view of Oxford. The view is breathtaking!
H. T.
Excellent views from the top. 99 steps, narrow passage are worth it. The cost is 3£.
F. R.
It's worth going up the CarFax tower to see the view. Best to do it on a clear day as you can then see pretty much the whole of Oxford from the far side of Botley to Cowley. Most importantly, the aerial view of the spires and cathedrals are really great.
*****
A. C.
An interesting building and a fabulous view from the too. Narrow staircase so not recommended for the less mobile
M. H.
Well worth the effort great view at the tip
j. b.
Only for the fit and those with a head for heights as you have to climb a winding staircase of about over a hundred steps to get to the top of the tower but the panaramic view is amazing.
S. C.
A bit snug in places. Not for the fainthearted. Up and down the tower itself could be better arranged by staff. Pays your money then you're left to it. Lovely views.
B. K. (.
Nice clock tower, busy location, careful across the the road.
G. P.
Good all round views of Oxford city. The clock has mechanical puppets which are animated and chime every hour. This feature isn't very common. Belgium and The Netherlands also possess these types of animated features on some of their Town Hall clocks.
A. A. H.
Fantastic view of the beautiful City of Oxford. Due to C virus the usual bustling streets are deserted and no Chinese students to be seen. Quite erie!!!!!!!
k. c.
Pro: Great view of parts of Oxford Centre and spires. Free Sunday to Friday . Small fee on Saturday means no queues !
Cons: 99 narrow steep steps with limited space at the top.
p. v.
Very slim climbing and roof top has lead top sides have wooden planks to walk around small space. View is very good
T. F.
For a panoramic view of the city of oxford you can buy a ticket and climb the tower. Nice to do it with your students or even with your other half. :)
J. G.
I lived in Oxford for 3 years before realising that you could climb it! A lovely view of the dreaming spires, though the staircase is somewhat awkward to navigate.
I. P.
Well worth the climb up. Great views.
a. k.
One of the most beautiful Cities on the planet. Cannot give enough praise for the river setting, beautiful architecture . The views and vistas are gorgeous.
A. D.
Worth a visit while in town if you've never been.
C. D.
Nice view of all Oxford
P. C.
Busy...noisey... lovely on a sunny day thou!
m. w.
ideal for tourists, especially if you like viewing city skylines :) very pretty during sunset
D. J.
Lovely view.
The stairs are very narrow and if there a re a lot of people up at the top you may have to wait for them to come down.
D. G.
Hike up the 99 steps to get a great view over oxford.
It's not expensive with £2.70
The staff are knowledgeable and are happy to give historical information
C.
Stunning views await those that can climb the staircase. Not for the faint hearted as the stairs are borderline safe as some points.
S. Y. L.
A beautiful historical tower located at the centre of the city
A. T.
The beautiful and melodious musical bells ringing every quarter in Oxford reminds you of the time passing in a place where a person is usually lost in thoughts, ideas and atmosphere.
D. P.
A beautiful old church tower, when open you can climb the stairs and go to the top for some fantastic views of the city, well worth the visit.
J. S.
Really cool place to check out, great view from the top.
A. S.
Lovely building. Clock. Figures banging the bell every 15 mins. The whole area is very old and beautiful.
R. K.
Very interesting. If you can, get there on the hour to listen to the chimes
B. B.
Open to Visit most days of the year Carfax Tower is regarded as the Historic Heart of Oxford, shops buses n taxis radiate from the crossroad's here 👀
B. R.
Not been inside so only 3 stars. Watch out for the little men clanging the bells under the clock face on the hour, every hour! £3 entry for about 15-20mins stay
E. F.
Amazing views all around but that's all there is really other than walking those 99 steps to get to the top! Still worth it!
P. R.
Carfax is at the junction of St Aldate's (south), Cornmarket Street (north), Queen Street (west) and the High Street (east) in Oxford, England. It is considered to be the centre of the city. The name "Carfax" derives from the Latin quadrifurcus via the French carrefour, both of which mean "crossroads". The Carfax Tower, also known as St. Martin's Tower (it is the remaining part of what was the City Church of St. Martin of Tours) is a prominent landmark and provides a look-out over the town.
St Martin's Tower, popularly called "Carfax Tower", is on the northwest corner of Carfax. It is all that remains of the 12th-century St Martin's Church and is now owned by Oxford City Council. It was the official City Church of Oxford, where the Mayor and Corporation were expected to worship, between about 1122 and 1896, when the main part of the church was demolished to make more room for road traffic. In 1896 the City Church was moved to All Saints Church in the High Street.
The tower is 74 feet (23 m) tall, and no building in central Oxford may be built higher than it. It is a Grade II* listed building.
The tower still has a ring of six bells: five recast from the original ring by Richard Keene of Woodstock in 1676, plus another cast by Keene two years later. They are rung on special occasions by the Oxford Society of Change Ringers.
There is also a clock that chimes the quarter hours on a pair of bells cast by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough in 1898. The clock's current dial and surroundings were designed by Sir TG Jackson and installed in 1898. In 1938–39 the clock mechanism was replaced with an electric one made by Gents' of Leicester.
It is possible to climb to the top of the tower for a view of the Oxford skyline. The tower is open 10am–5.30pm Easter to October, and 10am–3.30pm October to Easter.

The view from the top is alright, but it's not quite high enough to be interesting and there was lots of construction nearby when I went up. The whole thing feels unloved and underdeveloped.
C. W.
Reasonably priced entrance fee and good panoramic views of the city once you have negotiated the spiral staircase to the top.

Basically the centre of Oxford. View from the top is good, but can easily be achieved by going to the roof of the new westgate centre.
A. S.
Convenient , good view
J. N.
Great views of the centre of Oxford. If doing the Carfax, then consider also St Michael's Saxon tower at the other end of Cornmarket, and more importantly University Church of St Mary's on High Street (which actually has the prettiest views).
A. 1.
Great trip up the tower. It feels much much higher when you are up there looking down onto Oxford. You can see for miles on a good day.
R. C.
Since they opened the new Westgate centre, Cornmarket has been a shadow if it's former self. Carfax tower is there, and as historical as ever but it is starting to feel like a run down area b
C. R.
Amazing place and super helpful staff
p. a.
Best view of the town. Tight spiral stairs to the top
T. Y.
Quite a clime and you have to negotiate passing but the view is incredible from the top. The small fee to get in is definitely worth it.
n. m.
We came here to stop off for a coffee in this small brazillian eatery which is part of Carfax tower.
B.
Lovely and historic place to see
T. P. T.
Fascinating place, worth a visit
B. A.
Outstanding views from the top! Well worth the 99 steps up and a visit
