Reviews of Martyrs' Memorial
A great memorial to Crammer Latimer and Ridley designed by George Gilbert Scott (yes that man again how did he find the time) of whom I am a great fan .Latimer Bishop of Worcester , Ridley Bishop of London and Cranmer Archbishop of Canterbury all burnt at the stake during the Marian Persecutions

The Martyrs' Memorial is a stone monument positioned at the intersection of St Giles', Magdalen Street and Beaumont Street, to the west of Balliol College, Oxford, England. It commemorates the 16th-century Oxford Martyrs.
The monument was built 300 years after the events of the English Reformation and commemorates the Bishop of Worcester Hugh Latimer and Bishop of London Nicholas Ridley, who were burned nearby on October 16, 1555 after having been convicted for heresy because of their Protestant beliefs after a quick trial. It also commemorates the former Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer, who was similarly executed (after having watched his colleagues' painful deaths while imprisoned in a nearby tower and the Vatican having permitted his degradation from holy orders in February) on March 21, 1556. The Rev. Charles Pourtales Golightly (a descendant of Huguenots who fled to England in that earlier era) and other Anglican clergy raised the funds to erect the monument during the Victorian era. They opposed the 19th century Oxford Movement (also known also the Tractarian Movement), led by John Keble, John Henry Newman and others. Golightly and his colleagues were alarmed at the Anglo-Catholic realignment the movement was bringing into the Church of England, and wanted the memorial to reflect the university's Protestant profession and anti-Catholic tradition.
Designed by George Gilbert Scott, the monument was completed in 1843 after two years' work, having replaced "a picturesque but tottering old house". The Victorian Gothic memorial, whose design dates from 1838, has been likened to the steeple of a cathedral, though it was consciously patterned on the Eleanor crosses erected by King Edward I between 1290 and 1294 to the memory of his wife, Queen Eleanor of Castile (1241–1290). Henry Weekes sculpted the three statues of Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley. The monument is listed at Grade II*.[3]
The inscription on the base of the Martyrs' Memorial reads:
To the Glory of God, and in grateful commemoration of His servants, Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, Hugh Latimer, Prelates of the Church of England, who near this spot yielded their bodies to be burned, bearing witness to the sacred truths which they had affirmed and maintained against the errors of the Church of Rome, and rejoicing that to them it was given not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for His sake; this monument was erected by public subscription in the year of our Lord God, MDCCCXLI.
Cuthbert Bede (in his novel The Adventures of Mr Verdant Green) wrote about the setting of the Martyrs' Memorial thus in 1853:
He who enters the city, as Mr Green did, from the Woodstock Road, and rolls down the shady avenue of St Giles', between St John's College and the Taylor Buildings, and past the graceful Martyrs' Memorial, will receive impressions such as probably no other city in the world could convey.
The actual execution site is close by in Broad Street, just outside the line of the old city walls. The site is marked by an iron cross sunk in the road.
Martyrs' Memorial is located at the intersection of St Giles', Magdalen Street and Beaumont Street in Oxford, England, outside Balliol College of Oxford University. Built to commemorate the 16th century "Oxford Martyrs".
The Martyrdom Memorial Tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1843. It is in the Victorian Gothic style, like the spire of the cathedral. The statues of Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley were designed by Henry Weeks.
This place is a great place to meet people in the neighborhood.
This is a monument erected to commemorate the martyred clergy during the reign of Queen Mary I of England (1516-1558, reign 1553-1558). Hugh Latimer, Bishop of Worcester, Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, and Thomas Cranmer, Patriarch of Canterbury. These three people symbolize the Church of England, and were burned at the stake during the persecution of Mary I, who was a devout Roman Catholic.
Not far from here, the spot where they were burned has been marked. There are bricks in the shape of a cross on the road. I think it would be a good idea to look there. There is a sign on the wall of the building opposite, so be sure to check it out.
Located at the intersection of St Giles, Magdalen and Beaumont streets, outside Balliol College, Oxford, England, is a memorial to the three Anglican priests who were burned at the stake outside the city walls on Broad Street in 1550: Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, and Hugh Latimer were executed by order of Her Majesty. Queen Mary I
Small monument really well made, excellent finish. I don't recommend visiting it, but you will definitely be passing through, so you can always take a photo!
It is a very beautiful elegant city with important monuments. Very lively center located behind the monument. To the side there is a balcony overlooking some very beautiful gardens.
The monument was built around 1840, three hundred years after the martyrdom of the Bishop of Worcester and the Bishop of London, both accused of heresy. It was subjected to restoration work in 2003. It has a Gothic character
A very prominent landmark in the center of Oxford. Unfortunately, it is often neglected. Perhaps this is due to the fact that he is often surrounded by homeless people, dubious existences or teenagers. But it's definitely worth watching 😉
This monument is always full of people resting on the steps. Perhaps many do not know who it is dedicated to, but the martyrs must be happy that so many people gather there.
Beautiful place, and seeing the students and youth that reign in this place is captivating, I really liked it, as for the burned priests... 😥
Oxford city and university. It is worth devoting several hours to it... historical and charming
A number of people were burned for practising their Faith slightly differently from the main religion of the Day. Most countries have moved on since those days. There's missing tarmac on Broad Street 2 mins walk away where the 'heretics' met their end. No doubt they're in Heaven while their persecutors are in a very hot place!
For foreign visitors Magdalen is pronounced Maudlin. (It's a southern thing)
Beautiful! The museums are as wonderful as the city.
I felt thoughtful, nostalgic, imagining people being martyred for their faith in Christ.
Statue built to commemorate three religious leaders who were martyred in Oxford
The atmosphere of this place
Monument located in a small square in the middle of the street. It commemorates an event in the city's history.
Interesting design, very nice monument and with a quite strong history
You can appreciate every detail of this building and it is beautiful.
Oxford University Library Complex. Very impressive and recommended.
An attraction at Oxford University.
It is in an area of Oxford that has an interesting history.
Not situated in the exact place where the Oxford Martyrs were executed. Around the corner there is a square of road left uncovered by tarmac and a plaque on the wall to mark the actual site. The Memorial itself has become a meeting point for parties of overseas school pupils
I like these places very much.
Historic place. Different. It is worth visiting.

Historically significant, and features a lot in Inspector Morse et al.

Very macabre memorial. If you go see it, you should also see the oxford university cathedral as well. And the oxford town center, where the martyrs were burned alive.

The best location for starting Oxford City Tour
Beautiful Memorial, inscription: To the Glory of God, and in grateful commemoration of His servants, Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, Hugh Latimer, Prelates of the Church of England, who near this spot yielded their bodies to be burned, bearing witness to the sacred truths which they had affirmed and maintained against the errors of the Church of Rome, and rejoicing that to them it was given not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for His sake; this monument was erected by public subscription in the year of our Lord God, MDCCCXLI.

Beautiful old monument symbolic of Oxford.
Ideal landmark as a meeting point. Got some history to it as well.
Nice memorial. Well maintained
Oxford is a beautiful and very interesting city
Very good architectural memorial
An easy memorial to visit and to park close by
This is an incredible piece of history, sitting right in the middle of a modern-day high-traffic intersection. I highly recommend you check it out. The steps leading right up to the monument are great to sit and have lunch on (I have myself several times). The whole thing was "refurbished" in 2002 (I think), so all the carvings and such are very clear.
A good landmark for visitors.
Quite nice, lovely location
Great people deserve great monuments.
Good place for taking photos
A landscape of English history and heritage
An impressive historical monument
Very Nice Place to Visit
Genuine vibes when looking over at unkempt cemetery.
Oxford...!!!!! What's not to like about this city. Amazing says it all...!!!!!
Very interesting but also very sad
Certainly was outstanding and the pigeons contribute to it. The beauty is due to the complementary nature of the stone and the surrounding area.
I have often use this as a meeting place and I have never missed a friend because of it, nor have I ever been late if this has been my destination.
Great!

Wonderful monument
Beautiful monument
Nice unusual place
A cross in St. Giles Street marks the spot where the reformers Latimer, Ridley, and Cranmer were burned at the stake between 1555-56, an event commemorated by the Martyrs' Memorial (1841).
The nearby Rhodes House, headquarters of the Rhodes Trust founded in honor of South African statesman Cecil Rhodes, is also worth checking out.
Also close by is the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Built in 1855, it contains a number of interesting collections, including geological, mineralogical, and zoological sections, as well as work by Darwin, Burchell, and Hope.
There's also a pleasant walk along the Cherwell past Parson's Pleasure to a path called Mesopotamia, which leads to Magdalen Bridge.
