Reviews of Mayflower Steps Memorial
J. S.
The Mayflower steps memorial is on a great location which adds on the mystic of the historical context of the sail to America. You are two steps away from the aquarium and from the ferries, so you got nothing to lose to go and visit it.
The view is peaceful and calming and if you stop to read the plaques you end up learning something new about it !!!
D. W.
A very enjoyable walk along the waterfront with lots of history along the way. This historic landmark is the famous steps where the pilgrim fathers left to board the Mayflower and sail to North America.
H. B.
Picturesque and full of history. Nearby shops and cafes on the Barbican too.
Lovely all year round.
M. K.
Nice little location to pause and enjoy the surroundings!
M. M.
Seen the end point in plymouth, massachusetts....this was great.. got to see the start point
C. C. (. T. D. &. D.
Nice walk along the beautiful seafront, lots of info about the Mayflower and it’s historic voyage
M. M.
Nearly slipped to my death on the steps as the seaweed is so slippy and anyone who goes should be careful not to fall and break there kneck and not go more than halfway down unless you want to die. In this modern day it seems quite likely though
M. D.
Nice museum displaying the history of the Pilgrims before travelling to America. Was a special visit for me as my ancestors John Alden, (ship crew) and Priscilla Mullins, (pilgrim) were on board. Nice visit in the area and good fish & chips!
M. S.
One of my favourite places to be in this country. No matter what the weather you can soak up the atmosphere of centuries past, do some great shopping and buy the best ice cream in Britain with the added bonus of fabulous views over Plymouth Sound. The only drawback is parking on a sunny day but if you're prepared to walk a little way to enjoy this wonderful place then its well worth it.
K. B.
The Mayflower steps has incredible history. These brave people that left here to find another life is truly incredible. There journey to the new world must of been for some excitement, horror, desperation and simply just a new life. If you read the stories they are remarkable. Worth the visit just to witness where the pilgrims departed Plymouth.
S. O.
Visited for the day and were lucky enough to see a boat naming ceremony for the new mayflower. The first autonomous boat in the world. Was an interesting experience but we enjoyed Plymouth as a whole. Would definitely go back to visit as we didn’t see even half.
P. J.
Great location. Very historical site, great to read up on all the names of the first pilgrims on brass art design around memorial balcony. Very clean and close the lots of quality food establishments
L. G.
I love this area. So much going on all the time, so much to see. Nearby are some antique/secondhand shops with some really great items. I don't know why there is a Bubble Waffle place in there but go to the back of this arcade to an amazing store.
L. P. E.
It is an interesting and very historical place not only for Britain but also for people in USA and many commonwealth nations.
J. R. D. S.
Nice little memorial to the Mayflower setting sail. Interesting to see the steps though their isn't much there otherwise. Lots of plaques detailing various expeditions which are very interesting.
M. D.
I love that there is a Memorial in Plymouth to the Mayflower and a museum that tells a very different story than in the United States. There are other plaques to commemorate other events that happened from the same dock, seriously downplaying the significance of the Mayflower. Also, not a lot of Mayflower items to purchase in the area like in Plymouth, Massachusetts. I also traveled thousands of miles to be there, only to find people sitting in chairs inside the memorial- it may sound egocentric, but I really wanted a photo of just me there.
L. w. p.
Based on a very quick walk through from the barbican we came across this lovely lit up carousel. My daughter had a ride that lasted all of 2mins. Other then that i can't really say much as u didn't hang around to look around so don't take this as a negative post. I just didn't have time to see or do much at the time.
V. A.
This place has the best coffee in Barbican
S. W.
Lovely place to visit. We spent ages reading all the plaques telling us about all the historical events that happened here, not just the Mayflower sailing.
Y. Z.
Do not miss the chance stopping by to spare some time if you're into the immigration history side of things.
C. J.
My Grandfather built the original part of the Mayflower steps along with two other men. We travelled from Canada where I now live, it was a very emotional and proud moment
T. S.
Lovely place to visit, So much history .
B. W.
Lots of history to see and read nice views lots to do.
K. T.
Lovely here sound and clear .🌈🌈🌈
J. H.
As of two weeks ago, this landmark was completely boarded up for renovations. I was thoroughly disappointed!!!! However I snapped this shot of the steps from the bay-side view and you can see it there in the indentation of the pier. Pretty surreal to be at a place that has so much history for both the Thanksgiving holiday and the USA in general. Also, there is a US flag flying alongside the UK flag here too. Pretty cool!
T. O. G.
Historic area & very well documented with lots of plaques!
l. h. a. l. t. g.
Awesome.boat trip very affordable price for £9.50 per adult family of 3kids £25 for a whole hour. The tourists guide is very informative 👌 👍
j. m.
Such a beautiful place, lovely day out with my granchildren
J. R.
Always worth a visit just for the historical interest.
Thought provoking
L. A.

We went into the mayflower museum. Very interesting
S. a. h. C. a. P.
The harbour is such a beautiful place to walk around. Have a coffee and an ice cream, or collect seaglass..
S. S.
Lovely place to visit, the barbican is as lively as ever.
S. B.
Very informative. The various plaques were interesting to read.
S. K.
Absolutely beautiful just wished the weather was better on the day
N. C.
Nice little monument for were the steps might have been
G. B.
Lovely place to visit the story on the memorial is Lovely
R. O.
The Barbican is a great place to visit, pleasant stroll and plenty of places to eat. The Mayflower steps and the memorial are well worth stopping for and reading the plaque.
A. M.
Excellent location and very interesting with plenty to see
b. g.
Great place to visit....very historical. 😁👍
Q. A.
They are clearly ruines ,some of the defences, boat ,ship, submarine and what not
O. ..
Great place to be on a nice summer day. Not much to do with the steps themselves apart from reading the extensive historical information . (Unless you have a friend with a rib who can come and pick you up from the steps when you fail to get the Mt. Batten ferry on an early weekend morning. )
There's plenty to see, and do, and eat right next to the steps, however.
J.
Supposedly the place the Pilgrim sailors left ply mouth for the new world. Been to the same place in the US this is a little disappointing.
M. M.
I love this place. There is something about Plymouth that makes you welcome.
A. C.
Historical landmark ,well protected and a good place to visit.
S.
Great historical site from where the pilgrims 1st sailed to america.walk along the harbour is so relaxing.Well organized and maintained by the authority.
M. C.
Lovely memorial, you really have to stand and think back 👍👍👍👍
G. H.
Absolutely stunning, it truly grounds you to a point in time where you can drink in the collective excitement that would have once been at the marvel of the mayflower - on to the new worlds. Such a small section of the world has such an association with one of the largest scaled, positive cataclysms of change in history. How proud I am to live a stones throw away ❤️
M. B.
Yes very nice memorial.
But some historians now tell us that the Pilgrims didn't use these actual steps when they boarded the Mayflower. The sea wall and steps were built many years later.
P. C.
It's just some steps. Not the same steps as Mayflower departed from as that harbour wall wad not there then.
C. E.
A great Tourist attraction on our Barbican, especially for the Americans. Where the Pilgrim Father's set sail for America.
M. G. C.
We were very fortunate with the weather that day we had a nice pint of Cider from the Admeral McBride.
P. B.
Brilliant time lots of boat to see and boats to see navy ships
C.
Love this place great atmosphere, great history and great city
A. l.
Beautiful harbour great piece of British history lovely walk round
I. R.
Very special place. We sat the tables provided by Admiral McBride pub. Thank you. We had a few wets as well.
N. G.
Place of History on the Barbican, lovely to visit
P. R.
A lovely memorial informative and thought provoking
P. C.
Busy and vibrant as ever a pleasure to sit and watch
A. V.
Very interesting walk followig the Mayflower Trail. I was very impressed with how they dealt with the colonial past without gloryfying it and acknowledging the negative impact of colonialism.
K. D.
Great historical place, right in the heart of the Barbican.
L. R.
Nice to see pleased l went on the visit
v. m.
This is one of those places that doesn't really exist; nobody stepped off to anywhere from there because they didn't exist at the time. If you're keen on accurate history, I believe you need to check out the steps to the loo in the nearby pub, which is a more accurate guesstimate of where they went from but beware you don't get had up for cottaging.
C. R.
For such a historic place, it is quite underwhelming! Unfortunately when we visited, it had been blocked off so we couldn't go out onto the viewing platform. There are a lot of plaques on the walls, but non really tell you who was on the Mayflower, who the Founding Fathers were, which was a bit disappointing. It would be nice to read more information about the Mayflower rather than just commemoration plaques.
L. G.
There is so much to see in this area. Even a seagull eating a fish head.
G. J.
The chips were not freshly cooked and were only fit for the bin fish cake very nice. We had sausage chips and curry sauce here last week and they were lovely today the chips were only fit for the bin
M. G.
Refurbished for Mayflower 400 , convenient Mayflower Museum and Visitor Centre nearby opposite .
G. B.
Born and bred here.. amazing history...2020 400 years since those guys landed in USA.
H. F.
It depends on what you want to see. There is a plaque telling us a little about the Mayflower, although I'm told by people older than myself that the real Mayflower steps were built on. The Barbican is very pleasant, also frequently very busy. Parking is on street (very limited) or in a nearby car park. Either way you will have to pay. Well worth the walk up the hill towards Smeaton's lighthouse and panoramic views of Plymouth sound.
K. L.
I am told these are not the original Mayflower steps, they are under the Admiral Macbride pub opposite. But they worth a visit with fine views and are a good spot for a selfie.
J. J.
Love it here such a beautiful place
A. L.
The location where the Mayflower set sail for the US in 1620. Interesting for me as I have also been to Plimouth in US where they arrived at other end.
D.
Great view point. Excellent open area for kids to run around.
J. (.
Busy this week, flowers left for the anniversary
Sadly, due to covid, all the celebrations were cancelled last year, and they weren't held over for this year.
Would have been really interesting & huge for the hospitality sector.
C.
historic place with some very interesting plaques
R. R.
Great view full of memory.. it all started 400 years ago
K. B.
These are the very steps that the Pilgrims used to board the Mayflower and settle in America.
M. K.
The whole of the Sutton Harbour area has a great vibe. Lovely and bustling with some fab bars. Mayflower steps are very evocative. So amazing thinking about those people leaving from there all that time ago and what it must have been like. Visit the Mayflower museum above the tourist info shop to found out. It is very interesting for all ages. So much to learn. Fantastic now that the bridge across the harbour locks had opened. Means you can now very quickly and easily get to the National Marine Aquarium which is superb
P. C.
Very interesting memorial.
S. A.
Interesting place to visit a alongside the Barbacian.
S. B.
Great place to visit for family
B. P.
Lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. Lots of history right in front of your eyes.
Due to Covid19 most of the Mayflower celebrations were called off sadly.
But still a nice place to visit if you are ever in Plymouth
M. W.
A great place to just chill out, I sat in the sun overlooking the harbour, a very pleasurable experience, some nice pubs in the area.
S. B.
Situated on the barbican. Beautiful place
A. P.
Beautiful spot to commemorate history and when here, do not forget to visit the Mayflower museum located on 3 floors with lots of interactive games for whole families
p. s.
Nice views but when buisy not enough seating for the infirm or elderly considering this is a tourist atraction of great importance in the southwest and coaches of tourists attend of the older generation more needs to be done.
M. l. n.
Better than slapton
k. t.
Don't forget among all those who set out from here the Tolpuddle Martyrs returned
A.
Lovely views
J. H.
Simple little spot to view such a major point of history. Almost understated. The little deck and steps were closed, not sure why.
A. W.
Excellent place to visit with friendly people.
K. S.
If you are interested in history then this is the place to come. The Barbican is a lovely place to visit especially all the little shops along Southside Street ending up at the steps.
A. M.
Really great value for money v well set out e hibition
J. S.
It's ok, nice to have an arch of sorts there to mark the area but it is pretty boring
A. H.
A trip back in history with a modern touch
Well maintained and a popular attraction set within the Barbican area with numerous restaruants offering a wide range of food choices from.around the world
E. G. D.
Very popular site. Little cafe is lovely, with tea coffee, pulled pork and ice cream. Small car park with a great place for dogs to socialise, run and have a dip in the river. Nice walk tho for the less abled, it is difficult terrain.
If you are into walking and like dogs, it's ideal.
N. H.
This was a lovely place to walk around.
r. b.
Recently renovated for Mayflower 400 celebrations (cancelled!). Good tourist venue but the real steps are 50 metres away in the basement of the pub. Quay has been modified since 1620!
K. N.
Beautiful for taking pictures 😊
m. e.
Perfectly perched on the dock side, sitting in it's own sun trap, get there early to avoid dissapointment.
A. R.
The Mayflower steps are of historical importance as this is where the Ship the Mayflower set sail in 1620 with pilgrims bound for the New World in America.
M. A. S.
Best time is in the evening for me
K. R.
Beautiful historical place. Gorgeous views of the harbour. Had a lovely stroll along here.
M. R.
Under renovation right now (as of SEP 2019). I saw it back in 2012, it's a nice check in the box, but may feel a bit underwhelming for history buffs. Having said that, I'm glad I took the time to visit.
S. G.
Iconic historical monument. The actual steps where the pilgrims departed from are behind the ladies toilets in the Admiral McBride pub across the road!
M. S.
Another great place in Plymouth is the Barbican where the mayflower steps memorial is. Barbican is a must to visit plenty to see with all the various shops and restaurants and cafes. And also home to the late gypsy acora.
S. B.
Went to see Queens baton arriving wonderful.spot
A. R.
Historic site where Pilgrim father's left for America
J. R.
Fantastic place steeped in history as well as a beautifu place to visit.
P. L.
The steps have been refurbished in commemoration of the 400th anniversary on the departure of the Mayflower. Various new plaques and information boards have bee erected. Unfortunately, the big celebrations planned didn't happen because of the Covid-19 situation - which was a great shame.
P. K.
Good place for a after dinner walk.
c. y.
Nice day out around the barbican
m. m.
Great stay cation memories after the lifting of the Covid restrictions.
D. “. C.
Lots of history here, don't miss out
B. U.
Beautiful place
P. W.
Super place to enjoy what Plymouth barbican can offer even in lockdown. Fish and chips, ice cream a drink but no loo's open. But beautiful and only 5 minutes walk to the sea front.
C. H.
Strange to be in a place of historical significance
R. R.
What an amazing view from here.
A. T.
Although, rumor has it, they're not the real steps, it's still nice to know that civilised America started from here. What has happened since then, we can't really be held responsible for. They wanted to go it alone for a better life, and they've got something along the lines of that. But if they'd just stuck it out in ye good ol' Great Britain, this could have been allot different.
The steps then selves are fine.
They're steps.
Even if they do lead straight into the sea, they're still allot more useful than the guy who is currently looking out for all the descendents who left from these steps, all those years ago.
O. N.
What can you say, they're really nice steps. The significance of which should not be lost on the Plymouth visitor. As, if the mayflower hadn't set sail when it did all those years ago, Micky Mouse may never have been born. 🐭
C. B.
Huge list of names - must visit place for genealogists and social historians.
Great reminder to reflect on the lives of those who went before us.
M. J.
They are steps from which the pilgrims sailed to America from. Not the original steps and they are not actually in the correct place, but it's good for tourism
D. B.
The actual steps are behind you.
They were moved when part of the barbican were made.
m. k.
Great historical place to visit
j. s.
Brilliant. You definitely need to take the photos whilst in Plymouth Devon for your memories.
A. L.
With next year being the 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrims setting off from Plymouth. A huge effort is being made to get things done, and in place for our Ocean City's big event. Possible being attended by President Trump. Though stand by for tweets about that happening.🙄 The Barbican is a thriving location filled with history, interesting places to find and friendly locals. I wouldn't want to live any where else. I'm not just saying that because I live here. You would be hard pressed in deed to find anyone who tells a different story. So join us, visit us and check out our fresh air country sights and Sea views. You don't need to wear a mask as you do in smog filled London. Look South West folks, look South West.
M. E.
A nice area to wander around. The old town tucked up behind in narrow cobbled streets with craft shops and fish and chip shops.
B.
Lovely place to see the marina. And a few lovely pubs to go to as well
G. S.
It's a lovely place with lots to see , the boats ,shops ,cafes , fishing, boat rides
D. B.
Interesting historical spot..if your into that.
Plenty of bars, bistros and carafes nearby.
M. F.
Nice to sit and chill
M. S.
Nice place, but could be enriched a lot more. In its current state, I don't think it's worth traveling to see.
S. R.
Currently not a lot to see as renovation works are taking place ahead of the 2020 commemorations. Still an iconic place. Look forward to seeing it when updated.
r. g.
Lovely place to sit and have a coffee watching the boats coming into the harbour.
G. “. O.
Nice place for a coffee and good food, wonderful view, friendly staff
A. M.
Beautiful and historic landmark with loads of local and independent traders around it. Well worth the visit and learning about the history of this important location.
G. W.
It's a place that is always busy, same to day even in lock down, this is the year we will be marking the 400th sailing of the mayflower as we had to postpone it last year, here is hoping.
D. F.
Quite moving to be in front of a nondescript set of steps, that aren't even original, but had such world changeing consequences when the pilgrims walked down them..
R. C.
The Barbican area is a great place for history, culture and food.
A. R.
Full of history love the whole story behind it and visited Plymouth Massachusetts to be there at the other end. Fascinating.
J. I.
The steps are undergoing some restoration at the moment , had a nice cup of coffee from one of the street vendors though and sat in the sun people watching .
j. f.
The Barbican is a pleasant area of Pkymouth where the Mayflower left to journey to the New World. There are historical winding streets with a wide selection of Bohemian shops, pubs, and restaurants, as well as very good fish and chip shops. The pubs have "al fresco" seating areas which have space heaters and parasols so you are partially protected from the elements. There are night clubs as well with mexican themed foods. The Plymouth Gin distillery is also situated in the Barbican, and it has a museum which is open to the public. The Sea Life Centre is also in the area, and well worth a visit.
P. R. C. A. B.
Really significant part of Plymouth's maritime history. Shame it is littered with a single boat tour company adverts. There are others please look around.
K. G.
Great Piece of Plymouths History
P. W.
Worth a look if you are in Plymouth but the memorial itself isn't worth going out of your way for. The quayside area is very pleasant though
H.
A great place to learn the history of English colonists from the Mayflower.
Great Mayflower replika inside.
A. A.
Nice place to visit
A. K.
Nice place to walk about, eat food, sit and people watch.
P. D.
Very informative and interesting place to go much more there than initially appears. Great place to go on a wet day
I.
Good place to eat your chips. Dunno about the historical part of it, don't really care either haha
S. C.
Lovely to look out to see and imagine the people setting sail to America
C. B.
Beautiful views over Queen Anne's Battery but if you want to go where the ACTUAL steps were, go into the Admiral.Macbride pun and stand by the door to the ladies toilets. THIS is where the ACTUAL steps were purported to be.
S. F.
Very pretty, lots of takeaways and bars in local vicinity:)
A. B.
Lovely area lots of dining facilities and some old pubs
S. P.
Had a lovely afternoon out on the Barbican the music and the atmosphere were electric
R. T.

G. B.
Not really kind of place what you expect where first ship with settlers departure
