Reviews of Plymouth Naval Memorial
J. T.
It's an amazing place literally in the Middle 2 rivers either side and what a view. Although I think it could so with a make over as it hasn't changed in 40 years or more.
G. H.
Such a seren place with the most beautiful backdrop ever. The most macabre sense of gratitude washes over you as you attempt to count the amount of names that are written over every single plaquard. A truly fitting dedication to the lives lost to protect our country during the war. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the monument due to losing my photos recently but I do have a photo of the view from the back of it.
M. Y.
It is great to have an area like this to go to in a city. Big open space, parking, plenty of places to eat near by, amazing monuments, a lighthouse that you can go in at certain times at the cost of £5 per person and beautiful views reaching out to sea. A good place for families and children.
M. T.
One of the three great naval memorials built by the CWGC to commemorate the missing of the Royal Navy from two world wars.
Here at this Plymouth memorial are the names of 23,000 sevice personnel who have no grave but the sea.
A place for quiet reflection on the cost of freedom.
K.
The last time I was here I had accidentally joined a memorial service and it was incredible. It is a very historical place full of memories for people of all ages. This particular memorial service was very heartwarming and full of respect and love to everyone and I will never forget the old man in the wheelchair so full of love he shed a tear. It was a beautiful day, I remember afterwards laying down in the grass and watching the clouds. I even saw the princess there (I believe princess Anne) paying her respects. This really is a wonderful place to visit if you get the chance.
V. A. E.
Visited here to pay tribute to my husbands uncle (dec) aged 16 on his first Naval Placement. Sad thoughts of a brave young sailor who wanted to do his best to serve his country.
A. B.
Third visit here, lovely ace to walk around and explore, beautiful sea front steeped in history
O. D.
Such a wonderful view for a memorial, well worth the visit no matter the function.
S. F.
Not very disabled friendly because of the steps around the monument. You can't read names from the steps. Young lads constantly riding down the steps showing no respect to the fallen.
J. T.
Lovely open air, and well kept grass area with large Car Park, overlooking Plymouth and the Bay. There are also Public Toilets within walking distance. There are also Benches at regular stop's to have a rest. I went there with a group of dancing friends, as there was a Vintage event that day, trying to raise funds in aid of Lady Nancy Astor.
C. P.

T. D. w. M.
This is a place that is not seen by all visitors, whether they just do not have time or just no interest, it's a shame. On this visit I wanted to see the memorial with its new display of Poppies which were installed this past week. I have to own up and say I Am one of those who held no interest, but last year I started looking into my family history, and although I do not have family listed, it was still an eye opener to see all those names listed. Open to all visitors it is well worth a visit, whether young or old, ex services or not. Just stop, look and remember.
R. R.
What a monument!?? It is such beautiful place no wonder people stroll around it and sit and take in the view.
m. m.
Fantastic place beautiful views military history
J.
Very beautiful and picturesque place to be. On a sunny day it is a pleasure to walk up and down the promenade and to look at the memorials on display. There is plenty of parking nearby and disabled car parking on the actual promenade. There are benches and a few places to get a hot drink or an ice cream.
M. D.
Inspiring and impressive. A fitting memorial to the brave sailors who lost their lives in two world wars.

D. J.
Lovely walk along Holy Well beach
J. V.
Nice place to spend a couple of hours walking, sunbathing, relaxing and there is a cafe and toilets, costs (20p) to have a pee, which is cheaper than paignton sea front, but dearer than finding a Bush.
R. S.
Nice place to walk around a soak up the history.
C.
Absolutely loved sitting here on a Saturday afternoon with an ice cream, the only thing that slightly spoiled it were 2 younger people smoking weed on the bench over from me.
S. L.
A stunning memorial to those who sadly lost their lives fighting for their country.
S. A. O.
Excellent place steeped in lots of history.
J. L.
A most impressive memorial for the Naval dead of the two World Wars. Whether family members are on it or not, it is a place to spend a few minutes trying to imagine any one named and what their lives would have been liked.

A bracing February walk in the wind and rain today.
Visited the new poppy wreaths placed at the Memorial today, Remembrance Sunday
S. S.
Really nice place to visit, it's very interesting and it was fascinating reading all the names on the plaques and just imagining what all these brave people went through during their service time. It's a great view from the top of the car park and there's a little café there too if you want to get a drink and a snack and sit on on the grass and enjoy the view.
S. S.
There is currently maintenance work being done to the memorial. The memorial is looking clean and the planted areas are looking nice. It's always been a pleasant place to sit and reflect.

Very nice monument. Very tall. And striaght. Always well maintained and hosts various events throughout the year. Great panorama of the Plymouth Sound. Several other works of statuesque art nearby also worth checking out.

Lovely area..... Amazing views!
P. B.
Love Plymouth especially in the summer bit bleak today
E. E.
Worth seeing, quite busy now.
m. k.
Lovely war memorial! Great place to pay respect
S. B.
Lush view
A. M.
We can not build a tribute as great as the debt we owe the people listed on the monument but this is an almost worthy homage. The bronze plaques and adornments set on pale stone make a fitting centerpiece for remembrance services. It is also some where pleasant to sit and contemplate.
M. H.
Not sure how you would review a memorial, it is a real eye opener just seeing the names it makes everything that bit more real. We should never forget the sacrifice of every service man. I managed to go today and saw them lay the reefs for Remembrance Day. Lest We Forget
L. G.
Very moving - well done - at the going down of the sun - we WILL remember them
F. O.
Nice place and Very quite if you go there evening
P. S.
People watching at its very best, when the weather's good?

L. H.
Well dedicated place amazing place
F. M.
It is the memory of people died during their greatest proudest and most honored service for others.
Maybe they would DESERVE more.
C.
a great and well maintain tribute to our armed forces, easy walking distance from town, the barbican. there is also parking on the Hoe itself for those with limited mobility. lots of other memorials to visit nearby.
Also great views of the town and the cost to be had from the Hoe itself
A. D.
Went here with some university friends to do some filming. As it's in the middle of the hoe the views are great. For a sunny day this is a nice place to go to just look at and get a photo of.
P. D.
Very tasteful and beautifully sculptured memorial
A. B.
This is a wonderful place to be anytime of the year. The scenery, the history and the openness to the elements. And you can get ice-cream. What's not to like.
C. B.
As an ex Royal Marine, I was particularly interested in seeing all the names of marines killed in 2nd world war. RIP
O. B.
A beautiful and thoughtful memorial to our fallen. The open and clean place displays the names of fallen from the great war.
Surrounded by other memorials it is a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice the few gave for the many.
H. B.
Nice to see it being looked after and being tended to.
Great to see people respecting what it's there for and what part of our history and remembrance it forms.
K. M.

M. N.
What a view. Great venue
M. S.
But dirty, but nice
c. t.
Incredible piece of art work and such a fitting tribute to the fallen. Lest We Forget.
L. S. A.
Great place to walk. A few memorial statues such as drake himself could do with a clean from all the seagull poop more often than what it does get cleaned.
d. s.
amazing place to relax.
P. B.
It not all just about the respectful memorials. This is a wonderful place to come for the whole family, with an ever-changing vista, and a wonderful safe place for the little ones in your family.
S. C.
A fantastic place to pay respect. Really appreciate and like the new merchant navy monument.
L. B.
This is an impressive and moving Memorial to those sailors and marines who never returned.
Reading the names of the fallen brings home the enormous sacrifice that was made.
The setting is perfect for a Naval Memorial, looking out over the beautiful Plymouth Sound.
D. L.
Set in fantastic position, offering beautiful views and several interesting tourist attractions. Close to marina. Perfect spot to relax and just look at everything.
A must see if you are visiting Plymouth.
M. L. M.
Wonderful views near to the beach
J. D.
Has a nice sunset.
E. R.
Locals respect the sight and is very well looked after, the atmosphere is very quiet there and it is a very meaningful place definitely worth visiting but be respectful and don't let any children climb on it
C. P.
This huge monument pays tribute to the men and women from the city who gave their lives to the Navy during the Second World War. It's impossible to miss, built on the Hoe as the end point for the huge "promenade" that was made an essential part of the city's reconstruction after being flattened by bombing during the war. It is built around a large obelisk, and is decorated with panels listing the names of those fallen. It also has some impressive statues as part of its design. It does not take long to walk around, and is partly disabled-accesible, and leaves a powerful impression of the cost of the war for the city and it's people.
H. D.
Lovely place to sit and relax, family friendly public space. Perfect for a picnic overlooking the beautiful coastline
A. L.
Like any memorials dedicated to those who paid the supreme sacrifice. One needs to respect them on their visit, and read any plaques giving details. These monuments on Plymouth Hoe are moving and beautiful in their own significant way. LEST WE FORGET.
G. F.
A great location to visit if your a tourist. Only reason I've not given it 5 stars is that parking isn't great which means if your disabled then getting there can be difficult. Also it's very exposed to the weather and hence it is normally windy. Good view though.
V. G.
Beautiful landmark at a beautiful sea front and light house
M. D. G.
Where else on Guy Fawkes night can you enjoy 20 minutes of awesome fireworks beneath the splendour of a citadel and overlooked by a memorial to the naval heroes who didn't make it home in two World wars...least we forget all those who put this country first.
J. D.
The Hoe is a great place to have a picnic, relax, sun worship or simply watch the warships and boats sail past. There is tea, coffee, sandwiches and ice cream available locally. plenty of parking and easy accessibility for all ages.
P. H.
Long time since our last visit.
Very impressive memorial containing names of 23,000 naval staff lost during the two World wars, together with names of all the campaigns.
Four lifelike sculptures representing those who were lost. Sculpter, Sir Charles Wheeler.
G. R.
This is the main memorial for those that did not return from the 1st and 2nd World Wars. It sits atop Plymouth Hoe and there are views to Plymouth Sound to the South and Plymouth City Centre to the North. Unfortunately access to the various panels with the names on is very limited for wheelchair users and as many of the veterans are likely to be wheelchair bound (including myself) then this is unfortunate. Could Plymouth Council or the War Graves Commission rectify this then the answer would be yes, with couple of well placed wooden ramps and hand rails it could be made completely accessible.
S. W.
A wonderful memorial,I managed to find my long lost grandad on there, beautiful scenery and glorious views of Plymouth Sound.
J. F.
Its a nice park, good views. Not much to say, monuments and greenery!
E. P.
A well maintained area with adjacent Peace Garden, public park, with a variety of businesses providing refreshment and toilets available.
I enjoy the Plymouth Bike Nights

C. J.

L. C.
Wasn't keen on history at school but walking round here was eye opening & interesting.

Plymouth was built around our naval heritage so take time to reflect. To keep the kids quiet ask them to find the door to the top of the tower.

With Plymouth's Military and maritime history the city is rightly proud to honor serving and past servicemen and women here. Stunning location on the Hoe and next to the famous bowling green.

B. P.
Beautiful setting for a memorial dedicated to the Navy.
You won't find many more spectacular memorials in Britain than this one. Well respected by all.
P. T.
Interesting memorial well laid out although obviously done before the days of consideration to those in wheelchairs as not all parts accessible to wheelchair users.
A. B.
Its a one time visit place. People not interested in history better keep away
M. G.
The tallest monument amongst several commemorative statues and columns reflecting Plymouth's rich naval history.
Frequently visited by relatives anxious to trace long deceased victims of war.
D. P.
Positioned on Plymouth Hoe it's a large memorial that is well maintained and clean. There are spectacular views from the Hoe across the waterfront, Jennycliff, and Cornwall along with the chance to see a warship to two entering or leaving Devonport Dockyard.
T. D.
Very well looked after. Remember visiting this as a child great to see it still looked after as a adult.

Great views & the lighthouse can be visited. It was moved piece by piece years ago from within the sea as the foundation was thought to have decayed and dates to 1870, I think
