Reviews of The Box

Amazing I've been there first time today and I live in Plymouth! Highly recommend! I will be back for sure!
I came with my partner and 2 year old and he was mind blown by some of the attractions.
There is a restaurant, very well equipped gift shop, toilets as well as disabled toilet. Staff everywhere in case you need help/advice.
Lots of interesting activities for the little visitors to explore too.
Very informative and well arranged museum. Absolutely mind blowing compare to the old museum I visited many years ago.
Entry is free however I encourage people to make small donations, you can pay cash or card as little as £1-£5. It's totally worth it!
There is no parking right outside but close enough.

I really enjoyed this amazing museum! A merge between the old and new architecture. It shows many interesting collections of fine art and history and it is located just in the heart of Plymouth. Its admission is totally free and you do no need to book to visit. Very friendly staff! Every time I visit Plymouth always visit the museum to enjoy the new art collections. Really worth it!!

This museum is truly incredible. Looking at all their jaw dropping pieces just makes you feel alive! I was amazed by all the beautiful pieces they had, including the city’s incredible collections and 14 monumental ships’ figureheads, thousands of natural history specimens full-size woolly mammoth replica, objects, film and photography, documents, maps and plans. I look forward to visiting again, bringing others to look with me. I highly recommend the museum, hands down an amazing experience as soon as you walk in the door.

My family and I enjoyed our visit to The Box very much. There is so much to see and take in, I wish we had spent longer here!
I enjoyed the 'Because the Night...' exhibition, especially with regard to the Van Dyke club being that my late Dad had told me many stories of his nights there in his youth, although I did feel there could have been a lot more on the later nightlife in Plymouth. Other highlights included the immersive history of Plymouth, the 'television room' and of course the mammoth. The shop had some lovely gifts available and next time I'd like to try the cafe which looked very pleasant. A great family trip for free, what more can anyone ask for?
M. M.
It's a good museum. It had a lot of interesting artifacts to see and of course, informative. It's free to enter. The shop had some good merchandise. Their restaurant had a couple of good vegan options which were tasty. Staff was very lovely and welcoming.
R. M.
This is a free museum about Plymouth and other various historical pieces. We walked right in. Really enjoyed this and you can't beat the price. Volunteers were informative and really nice. It does run on donations and what they make at the gift shop and café. We bought items at the gift shop.

The BOX is really The Plymouth City Museum. It is located up the road (northeast) from Jigsaw Park roundabout on the left. But, don’t be confused by the name. Even though there are plenty of modern University of Plymouth and municipal buildings that look like giant boxes, the front of The Box is the old neo-Roman architecture with pillars and all. However, if you come in by the back way, it appears more modern.
There are two levels and there is a history to the museum and the collections, which includes a mammoth, interactive history of Plymouth Port, and an archive collection of rare books and furniture.
Currently, there is a temporary exhibit of George Shaw art and The History of Clothing. Other locations are associated with The Box, which includes The Elizabethan House and St Luke’s Church.
The staff and volunteers are extremely friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable about the items and exhibits. They are more than willing, almost anxious, to share their enthusiasm with anyone who is interested.
The best thing is that there is NO entry fee. It is completely sorted by voluntary donations. It is a very nice place to visit and relax after shopping at Drake Circus Shopping Centre.

Superbly done upgrade to the museum we had before. Well worth a visit and in the summer the air con is most welcome. Friendly staff and volunteers. Throughly recommended if in the air or a local. The video footage is amazing and the run through the history of Plymouth is superb.
P. T.
I visited over two weekends with my 93yr father, the quality and effort put into the displays was impressive, street access facilities for disabled, my only observation was there seamed too many sensory/audio rooms which may be lost on young children however it is definitely a must see.. Enjoy
C. B.
Great museum. Not very hands on for the kids, but they didn't seem to mind too much. Loved the displays.
Seven Sisters exhibition was fantastic. Learnt loads. The staff were all attentive and friendly. They engaged with us and with the kids appropriately.
Will be back!
L. W.
Really lovely museum with lots to see! There were a few different exhibitions on as well as the permanent collections which. The volunteers were really friendly and informative, look forward to visiting again sometime!
V. R.
Loved this experience. It is amazing that it's free! Spent an hour or so exploring and could have spent longer but we had to catch a train. My kids loved making a news and weather report and we enjoyed watching the film of the history of Plymouth. Well worth a visit
A. T.
Brought our 10 year old, and found we all really enjoyed the day. Lots too look at and learn about without it being too much. Being an LGBTQ+ family we loved that it covered the LGBTQ+ history as well which was really good to see. Overall an excellent day we spent roughly 3 hours fully exploring and learning and very much enjoyed the insect microscope area too
M. D.
Just amazing. Very interesting experience. Plenty things to keep kids entertained. Cafe is very busy, but food was really good. Staff very friendly.
V. P.
Great afternoon out here, it was free to go in and spent a good couple of hours looking around. Lots of very interesting items. We will definitely be returning
A.
What an amazing place this is. Only had a short visit but definitely go back to view in detail. The young lady gave us a knowledgeable insight to the museum and was brilliant. A must visit.
L. G.
Went today with my daughter, her partner and 11month old. We loved it. Great exhibits and helpful notices and staff. Good cafe. The figureheads are brilliant. I will be back with my husband soon. The burger was. Chargrilled Cajun Chicken
S. H.
Nice museum for spending an hour or so with kids, after all its free, not too many exhibitions but it's alright to pop in and have a walk around. Gift shop a bit pricy though, small manmouth plush toy is 15 pounds.
R. E.
A beautiful place to learn about Plymouth's history. Admission is free, donate to maintain the Box free. Family friendly.
M. B.
I absolutely loved it here lots, of Naval history and history of pretty much everything to do with ships, but you can expect from a museum that is in a place that was pretty much built by around a dockyard and port.
I could have spent hours there.
My eldest especially loved all the insects, fish, birds, bones and of course the mammoth which my wife also liked.
My baby liked watch the history video that plays at the start of the journey section of the museum.
There is a bar/restaurant there, which is ideal for some quick coffee and cake or a full meal.
There are also toilets and baby catch facilities, as well as a place to park buggies/prams.
Also there is a standard gift shop, right beside it is a lift and arts and crafts area for children.
There are two car parks close by, being a level car park behind Charles cross police station and Drake Circus shopping centre.
F. R. W.
Excellent space, contemporary architecture meets classical. The exhibits are well curated. The space, lighting and positioning innovative and inspiring. My daughter was fascinated and in awe of the 'Mammoth room' with its full size replica mammoth and the excellent collections of creatures, preserved and displayed wonderfully for all heights and ages to enjoy. The creative station by the shop is absorbing and inviting for all ages. The exhibitions on Plymouth life in history, with computer generated 3D scapes are absorbing. I would suggest at least 3 hours with breaks in between. There is an excellent eatery in house or a whole host of places to grab refreshments right on the doorstep. Being central to the Plymouth College of Art it is a vibrant area with lots to explore. Would highly recommend for a day out. But also to locals around the Tamar, who seek escape and inspiration.
J. D.
Great small art gallery, staff were very friendly and helpful.
Accessibility is good with lifts, wide aisles and 2 disabled toilets, one of which is a changing place toilet.
D. W.
Not usually a museum person, but was very impressed. A couple of things stood out. A video that was displayed onto a 3D screen showing the history of the port had a 'special effects' quality to it which was really clever. I also liked the big room 'around cinema' showing thought provoking stories from the history of Plymouth (racism, homophobia etc). Another video on alcohol consumption etc was excellent. All of these video exhibitions were relevant and topical. The cafe looked inviting, but I ran out of time to visit. Loved the ship figureheads display. The art from the gallery was fun ('Effoff' etc).
T. T.
One of the best museums I've been too.
And its free.
We stayed here looking around for 1hr 40 minutes.
So worth it.
So much to look through, and honestly would have paid to get in here.
If you thinking about travelling to Plymouth or you live there, this is a must see.
They also have a restaurant if you choose to eat there.
You learn so much history about the area.
The photos do not do it justice as there is way more than I have shown.
M. T.
This is the 3rd time I've visited The Box and I'm more impressed each time. Amazing displays give you an overview of Plymouth's history and some of the wonderfully diverse collections they have. The spaces are amazing too, just the modest vistas, architectural details and less busy areas give you a variety of experiences. They've had some brilliant exhibitions as well. I saw Dress Code (a terrific costume show integrating items from across the collections), George Shaw and Because The Night ... all for FREE. I'm so proud of what my old City have achieved in investing in it's heritage and culture. You must go!
S. B.
Was there for a business meeting but what a venue! Marvellous place to spend time. The library upstairs is brilliant.
S. N.
What a fantastic museum. Can't believe it was free and caters for all ages
S. W.
Went for late night meet Santa. Love the fact that the police made out that they were Santa's helpers. Staff were friendly, just a shame that there weren't more space for crafts.
M. B.
Went to see the Mayflower 400 exhibition but also took the opportunity to look at the rest of the displays. An eclectic mix of natural history, art, science, geography and geology. All well done with lots of detail. The Mayflower 400 (£5 per adult) was most interesting. I would have liked a bit more detail on what life on board would have been like for the 66 days they were crossing. But recognise there are no reliable records. But maybe some examples of what life on board a ship was like at that time would be helpful.
L. J.
We really enjoyed pur time here yesterday! The kids really enjoyed seeing the wooly mammoth and the butterflies and insects. Really great place to visit.
S. J.
Probably the best museum/gallery I have ever been to and the fact it's completely free is a bonus.
L. S.
My first visit to "The Box" - interesting displays from woolly Mammoth, pickled sea life to Plymouth History and Art installations upstairs. A clean modern space well laid out with interactive areas for all ages.
I would certainly visit again.
The cafe area looked welcoming (although I didn't stop there).
J. P.
Went with my Daughter, and 3 year old Granddaughter, we absolutely loved it. Really impressed with the exhibits, and the refurbishment is stunning. We spent a wonderful few hours and still didn't see everything. Will definitely be visiting again. The cafe does great coffee too...
P.
The staff are so very helpful. They couldn't be faulted.
I was mostly checking out archives, but the small range of artifacts I saw were well displayed and interesting.
P. T.
A very good museum in Plymouth my 12 yr old son had a great time lots of interactive stuff for children to do
D. R.
Fantastic place with a very eclectic array of items. Friendly informative staff as well. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Plymouth.
S. S.
Really great place and only just realised it was here in Plymouth! Booked tickets the night before as thought it may have been busy but when booking, I was pleasantly surprised to see it was FREE for Plymouth residents (I obviously made a donation whilst walking around the museum as it's a great place and relies on donations to stay open. I made a donation by contactless payment at one of the many donation boxes but you can obviously put cash in also). It's a bit bigger than I thought it'd be as it doesn't look much from the outside but again, there's quite a few interesting things to see when inside. There's also a gift shop inside which I thought was quite over priced but as I said before, it relies on donations and sales to stay open so I suppose it's to be expected. I've added alot of photos for people to see before they decide to go, which I'd recommend, especially as a fun and also educational day out (without them realising they're learning) for the kids aswell as yourself.
R. W.
A very nicely curated set of spaces. The thought provoking special exhibition on the voyage of The Mayflower and its aftermath is well worth the small charge. Oh, and there's a great mammoth.
P. T.
Original and new items presented in an interesting way, there's a lot of fascinating information to take in, particularly if you want to learn a lot more about Plymouth. We will be returning to read some of the older publications that are available to read. I would recommend an off peak visit.
C.
I enjoyed this great an diverse experience immensely. Still stunned it was free! Super impressed by the facts about Plymouth.
We only had an hour before closing time. I recommend around 2 hours.
J. C.
A really great museum. Interesting variety of presentation of exhibits. Only criticism - not enough seating especially in areas where film is being shown. I would have liked to watch but limited seating occupied and I cannot stand for any length of time. Some seating is placed in areas where there is nothing to view.
M. H.
Brilliant place. Lots of attractions. My 2 and 4 year old love it. And plenty of interesting stuff for adults too. Always a good place to bring the kids when you don't have any money to take them elsewhere. Well l worth the visit.
H. B.
We visited The Box last weekend with our two young children. It was really easy to book tickets online and we were greeted with a warm welcome on entrance. I had forgot to bring a mask & a kind member of staff gave me a disposable one without any issues.
The layout of the museum is excellent and there is lots to see and do for all ages. Our favourite part was learning about the history of Plymouth and Mount Batten breakwater. We parked at Regent Street Car Park which was really reasonable and a few minutes walk away from The Box.
Thank you for such a great day out.
C. P.
Genuinely interesting place to visit, lots of things for the kids to interact with, look at and listen to (even our uni age son was impressed!). Loads of history in a really well presented and thought out space... The box certainly surpasses what the name implies! 😁
P. M.
Took the grand children (aged 5 & 6) here recently and they loved it - particularly the Mammoth room, the film about Plymouth's history, and the local TV presenting on the first floor. We enjoyed it all.
b. g.
The exhibition here was brilliant...music from the 70punk,80s,90 rave culture....😁👍
K.
Booked a slot online and got entry to the mayflower exhibit which is normally £5 per person but free if a Plymouth resident.
Since moving to Plymouth in 2017 the building has been under construction and building works. Finally getting to see the museum was a pleasure. Who can complain with free. Not the largest museum but took around 2 and half hours to walk round and look at all the exhibits.
If your in the area or live in Plymouth definitely come have a look round it's always interesting to learn some facts of the place you live in.
All volunteers seemed very knowledgeable and were more than keen to help out where the could.
It was very clean and felt very covid safe with hand sanitizer stations dotted around everywhere also interactive exhibits were getting regularly sanitised.
Definitely check it out.
A. G.
Great little museum combining local history with natural history in a relaxed, modern and interactive setting. An excellent cafe/restaurant and a good shop round off this venue nicely. Being local, this is a great wet weekend option.
J. O.
Loads of amazing free exhibits (though we only looked at them briefly due to an excited child)!
Café had good vegan and gluten-free options. Definitely worth visiting and we'll definitely be back
L.
Great museum to visit free to get in and donations are welcome. Wasn't expecting much as the building seemed quite small on the outside. But lots of different displays and very informative
s. S.
Love the box. Was a quick visit, went to New exhibitions - follow on from mayflower exhibition, clothing and women artists (over a couple of sites). Went on a weekday so easy to get round
J. R.
After London and Bham museums I expected a bigger museum. Anyway, it's great and I'll gladly visit it again. Very interesting exhibitions with wide aspect of Plymouth history.
C. H.
A free to enter place full of interesting artifacts and exhibits including the woolly mammoth. I toll my 6 year old and while she liked it it was a 40min affair. It's not an ideal place for young kids as most of the interest is reading and learning about the exhibits and it doesn't keep the little ones interest that long. The cafe is nice but pricey but the food is fresh and amazingly tasty.
It's a place I'd go again for sure and it's worth a visit but if you've young ones don't expect any longevity from it either. Oh, top tip, enter from the university side of the building. Come in on the new plaza entrance and the first thing you'll see is the gift store. If you've got kids you know you want to keep that to last or avoid it altogether as it's very expensive (£15 for a small woolly mammoth teddy).
M. B.
Although my soup was lovely my husband and the two friends I was with were very disappointed with their bacon sandwiches. The bacon had rind on, was CHILLED and the sandwich also had salad in it. A bacon sandwich should be hot bacon with the option of tomato or brown sauce. Salad on the side is acceptable but should not be inside the bread.
Sadly, the friends came away very unimpressed and will not eat there again.
Z. J.
Managed to lose 3 hours in here 😂 was an amazing afternoon learnt lots of little things and could of easily spent a month's wages in the gift shop. Lots of little places to take a seat if disabled and lots of displays you can interact with too.
R. B.
Great location. Nice collection. Perfect for kids.
G. J. O.
Loved the box, tasteful displays that's not over the top. Nice use of tech alongside historical artifacts.
H. T.
I've been living in Plymouth for almost 5 years and this is the first time I've actually been inside the museum bit.
It's a small museum but it's a nice place to go out for a little bit (like about an hour) and learn about Plymouth and Devonshire history and stuff.
J. S.
A fantastic museum and free too!
A really immersive experience, very good on plymouths history, who knew there were 600 wrecks in plymouth sound, amazing! Only let down for me was the breakfast I ordered had obviously been heated up as the bacon and sausage was over crispy and dry. And for the price you expect better, can't fault the happy nature of the staff though.
M. G.
Worth the visit. Nice exhibits and very relevant to Plymouth. Very helpful staff that have good knowledge.
h. w.
Entered via original library entrance. Wasn't sure what direction to go etc any signage was very poor or none existent, wasn't many bins around so had to carry around rubbish from a drink I had when I went it. Lots of interactive exhibits etc there is a small cafe and gift shop but didn't make use of those.
m. a.
Great place to relax. A lot of new contemporary art thats not everyone's cup of tea. But there is plenty of things to see and a great history of Plymouth. Loads of historical artifacts. And to top it of, its free and there is a great restaurant. Dont miss the salad. Its yummy.
V. S.
Free admission. You may spend at least two hours there. History of Plymouth, natural history museum and gallery in the same time. 14 beautiful ships' figureheads.
J. t.
This was really interesting I loved looking at all the species of bugs and butterflies there was also a section on preserved fish and other animals which was really intresting though not a follower of the arts which makes up a large portion of the upper floor there is still a lot to look at here and of course it's all fir the best price ever (free) they ask if you would kindly make a donation but it is optional of course.
J. B.
As an adult , I enjoy visiting. However visiting with a 6 yr & nearly4 yr old is a different matter. I personally feel that the "old" museum that I took my now 3 grown up children to , was more fun & relatable than at present. This is the school holidays & no installations are particularly good for a hoard of youngsters. They enjoyed viewing the insect body parts but only 1 child could use this at a time & the space was so small that the butterflies/moths couldn't be admired. The floor to ceiling display of embalmed creatures is great, but kids can only see to a certain height. Mildred is lovely, but once seen that's it . Smeatons Tower puzzle was built 3 times but reading the relevant history , interest waned. The gallery could have contained some relevant art for kids with some humour & interaction ..60's housing is not of interest 🤔. Yes, you have an area for kids by the gift shop..thanks for that positioning, good marketing 👍 However, its a wreck as so many adults abandon their kids & don't make them clear up. No rubbish bin, dirty surfaces & toys scattered everywhere..would it hurt a volunteer to check in every few hours & tidy etc ? Very disappointed, I was hoping to nurture their interest but sadly feel this may have had the opposite effect. I personally will return on my own but not in a hurry with my littlies .
K. F.
Free entry with pre-booked tickets, cafe with drinks & great food, gift shop, a very interesting walk through pre, old & young Plymouth & surrounding area-with interactive maps, Human & World history we spent five hours there & still a couple more rooms to see, very helpful volunteers & staff..definitely will be going there for another visit!
P. L.
The museum layout is really impressive and accessible. A pleasure to walk round for a couple of hours. Free entry. It even has a bar!
L. W.
We had our world party at the Box Saturday. Amazing! The staff where great. The food was amazing and the DJ was fantastic. Thank you so much.
B. S.
An amazing venue full of wonderful artefacts and very knowledgeable staff. There was always someone nearby who was polite, friendly and helpful but we didn't feel pestered and could go at our own pace. Loved the little fun facts like that the mammoth was built by the people who had a hand on Chewbacca!
D. H.
A lot of care, dedication and hard work has gone into making The Box a special part of Plymouth well worth visiting. Fun and interesting for all the family, the Mammoth possibly being the star of the show.
D. J.
Free. How amazing. You don't get many attractions that are these days. Great shop & creative area for the kids.
L. B.
Since the expansion of The Box this place now has a lot to offer and I will definitely be returning soon. I haven't tried the café yet though. Plus, entry is free but it is worth donating too.
R. B.
I really liked the Plymouth history, Media Lab and the other permanent galleries. The British Art Show 9 was less interesting to me (I am not a fan of "modern art").
I. S.
We went to see a jazz band at the café. It's great that this amazing space is available for alternative cultural experiences. They also do lovely food.
A. P.
Great place, grandkids love it.
Plus its free.
M. T.
A fresh and innovative approach to a museum. Very accessible for people with different abilities. Staff, very friendly and helpful.
Great place to take youngsters. Their restaurant offers good coffee and dangerously delicious cake. However, if you are family planning to have lunch there, it might prove expensive.
Check their website for upcoming events. You might be pleasantly surprised.
It can get busy during school holidays so book your free entry online.
A. M.
Definitely better than the original museum. Not very much on the blitz and was smaller than I expected. The gift shop was fairly priced and was a nice hour and a half spent discovering the past.
A. c.
I enjoyed the experience but feel that the exhibits could do with expanding..... Especially the art. I feel that we have so many great artists from here they definitely could do with more paintings. The kids really enjoyed the mamouth room though.
K. T.
It's all about Plymouth and it's great history. If you visit Plymouth for the first time, this the place you should start from ..
And the entrance is free.
Y. Y.
The newly opened museum of Plymouth. Excellent and informative display that is really well presented with a mixture of tactile exhibition and modern IT. Full of local history with Very interesting facts about the city that will open your eyes. Very clean and bright inside with beautiful cafe with attractive menu too. The shop is filled with interesting goods.
T. r.
Great addition to Plymouth's many visitor attractions and a significant improvement on the museum which once occupied the same site. Well done.Plymouth.
S. T.
I visited The Box to see an Art Exhibition Songlines Tracking the Seven Sisters. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would certainly visit again for another event.
T. C.
Excellent place to visit and learn about Plymouth's history in a modern venue plus superb, well priced food in the café.
P. S.
Was totally bowled over. Fantastic place to visit including a great cafe to socialise. Got to go again

Great 👌 Time, Fabulous Remodel, Loved It. Thanks 👍, Totally Recommend Taking Friends And Family To See It.
A. M.
Super friendly team of helpful and informative staff. Great exhibits, the figureheads are stunning and the story behind their restoration is so impressive! The Mayflower exhibition is impressive too!
R. S.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Best free museum and indoor activity in Plymouth, for everyone! 100% recommend!
E. T.
Five glowing stars! This place is gorgeous and evey exhibit is so well considered. There is plenty to see and do here and it's all fun for children and adults alike. There was great representation in the archive footage and a variety of things to see. If you're in Plymouth then this is a must do!
L. J.
Very Impressed well worth a visit ! Ther is a lovely little cafe when you've finished your tour !
M. H.
A really immersive experience into our history in Plymouth. Some excellent interactive bits for the younger kids to keep them engaged too. All currently for free. The cafe is really nice too. Great coffee and cake!
D. “. A.
Excellent set out and plenty to see. Definitely needs several visits to see everything.
E. H.
Wonderful new addition to Plymouth City.
You can tell a lot of really thoughtful and passionate curation has gone into the collections and displays at this museum space. The cafe looks elegant, and is such a striking new build in the North Hill area of the city, near the university, art college and bars. It would make a fantastic start to a lovely trip into this Maritime city.
The staff are very open, helpful and truly engaged with the place. I could have spent all day here but time presses on! Fully recommend to all :)
A. S.
Great few hours of adventure and discovery into Plymouth’s past. Very well made displays and well kept :)
L. S.
A varied selection of exhibits and well worth a visit, and admission is free.
N. L.
First time here and really impressed. We really enjoyed the visit and what I thought might be an hour or possibly two ended up being four. My wife and I will go back. No entry fee either, superb.
L. C.
Great food and drinks, great location , lots of parking only a few steps and your entering the box museum so clean and fresh fantastic day out wonderful exhibits and nothing to stop people visiting with mobility issues elevators many lifting you and pram or wheel chair up to any floor.. the lounge areas many, are great.. you should visit and best of all its FREE !!!!!
s. c.
Nice place to look round, something for all ages and plenty of staff there if you have any questions, I was there about lunch time on a week day and it was very quiet, there were about the same amount of staff as visitors.
P. B.
Fascinating collections beautifully displayed with clear, helpful labels. Loved the media section and the fashion. Very good gift shop with some very unusual products and no tat.
Lovely eggs Benedict for lunch in clean, friendly cafe.
C. F.
Took my son to see the wooly mamouth and the mayflower 400 exhibit. I have to say it was great very interesting and with the new tablets in front of the displays you can choose what section in the exhibit you want too look at and find out more detailed info on each item in the display recommend a visit. The cafe makes a nice cuppa coffee too.
B. W.
Very well laid out good food free entry good for adults and children
F.
Amazing place. Took my kids aged 7, 4 and 1 and all three really enjoyed themselves. Lots of interactive bits for them to try and they enjoyed looking at the displays. Their favourite was by far the large floor with a projection playing on it but the mammoth and skeletons a close second. Was a great way to spend a wet and windy afternoon.
B. M.
Thoroughly excellent. A good welcome at the door with an explanation of all the bits to see. Helpful stewards in all the rooms. Spacious and well lit. Superb lunch in the restaurant with helpful barman/waiter.
L. w. L. t. D. L.
Lovely setting, amazing artefacts…went for a conference. The food was also good.
D. G.
A fabulous museum, that's free! Lots to see and do, including history of Plymouth, original artwork, music, ww2 and even a woolly mammoth. Staff were super helpful and friendly.
L. T.
The museum is nicely designed, and there is quite a lot of information on Plymouth/the Mayflower, but it's really lacking in interactive exhibits/activities. I found I was having to read a lot of information, and I saw quite a lot of children looking rather bored! The cafe is also quite expensive.
V. B.
Lovely addition to Plymouth
Lots of beautifully curated exhibits with interactive screens giving additional information. Enthusiastic guides and volunteers happy to chat about everything. Well worth a visit,in fact well worth several visits. I will certainly be returning. Had a very nice lunch and a glass of wine. Spent five hours there so needed a break
E. D. P.
Amazing place. Took my 2 children they absolutely loved it. Amazing that this is free. All staff were kind and knowledgeable. Will definitely be back.

They've done a great job bringing the old place into the 21st century. For a visitor the whole place is very interesting. For a local- you'd probably vidit once a year. The restaurant is fantastic for a quiet civilised drink and bite to eat.
G. P.
Hefty chunk of history found within 'The Box', so much so that we'll be going back on several more occasions when we find the time. Mayflower 400 exhibit was worth a nose, some of it thought provoking other sections I disagreed with but hey-ho, we're all entitled to our opinions. I particularly enjoyed the story of Plymouth during the Blitz, this should be compulsive viewing for anybody bleating about their 'modern' lives being disrupted.
A. C.
Very creative interpretation, fantastic volunteers, beautifully considered exhibits, very moving moments...food bleddy good too!
J. S.

The box is a lovely space. Food was excellent and the exhibition's were great.
c. w.
Enjoyed our visit. Bigger than I expected. Friendly and helpful staff. Interesting exhibits. Would go again and recommend.
J. M.
Very helpful knowledgeable guides. Great displays. Loved the story of Plymouth. Well worth a visit and will be back
M. O.
Was a delight to go around, lot's of Plymouth's history, lot's of artifacts and items to view and learn about, good information .
Very well laid out and easy access for all ages young and old alike.
Well worth a visit.
C. F.
Very interesting and well layed out. Plenty to see to while away hours. Restaurant is lovely and while we were there there was live music.
D. T.
Superb museum, giving great local and wider history and engaging with children (little workshops etc). Would highly recommend, clean and well maintained facilities with knowledgeable and friendly staff
R. G.
The Box is a superb new museum and art gallery and social centre (and kitchen and bar) in the middle of Plymouth. Everyone working there (staff and volunteers) is friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Brilliant for inquisitive children (I've been in that category for the past 70+ years). The permanent collections cover Plymouth's history and place in the world.
Until the end of February 2022 The Box hosted Songlines, a hugely significant and entertaining exhibition, conceived and curated by a team from the First Australians community, which reveals the continuing importance and value of one of the world's earliest civilisations. The exhibition is now in Berlin, until 30 October (at the Humboldt Forum). Well worth a visit if you are anywhere near!
A. B.
One of the best museums I have visited, and free.
Lots of local history, interactive displays, childrens' areas, restaurant.
Don't miss it.
A. M.
Such a massive improvement on the previous Museum and Art Gallery. Easy to spend 2-3 hours here, fascinating facts, photos and artefacts about Plymouth. Highly recommended.
D. G.
Interesting place to visit. History art and fun events for kids. Give a donation and help expand and maintain a good community resource
I. C.
Very interesting! History and life!
B. S.
Absolutely brilliant! Took my 9yr old grandson who also enjoyed it. Definitely worth another visit.
R. B.
Fantastic history of the port of Plymouth and some of the natural history. Free admission. Food good and reasonably priced.
J. T.
Good museum with a lot of interaction however I think they miss a trick, by not giving a planned story approach.
T. Y.
Fantastic - allow at least a whole morning. Must visit in plymouth. Good cafe too!
S. S.
Well worth a visit, you do not need to be a Plymothian to enjoy this museaum. Lots to enjoy and absorb. Fabulous cafe and shop.
M. W.
First visit with 96 school children! 🤣 Will definitely return with just my hubby for a more detailed and quiet visit 😄 staff are well educated, helpful and inviting. Looking forward to trying out the posh looking cafe and spending in the gift shop. It's free at the moment but costing £54 million I doubt if that will be forever 😳 I hope people will support this fabulous Plymouth attraction. I'm looking forward to more visits. Thankyou The Box ♡
L. M.
Fabulous free place to visit, kept the children entertained throughout the whole visit. Well worth a view.
D. R.
Brilliant, exciting experience. Lots of interactive and cinematic displays. Must see, free to enter.
S.
Really enjoyed The Box, shows what a modern museum should look like. Highly recommend.
A. J. L.
The Box museum in Plymouth is forever changing its displays, and is FREE to Plymouth locals. Though there are plenty of opportunities to donate £5 either by cash or Touch Donation card points. The visual video history of Plymouth is attention getting and educational too. A lot of displays to see to cater for many tastes. Plus the Box is a spacious place. No cramped displays. Such a modern place to visit. There is a coffee/bar restaurant to rest weary legs, and is table service with polite and respectful staff. I donate every time we visit as it's simply worth it. Give it a visit. You won't be disappointed
M. H.
Absolutely brilliant, such a great job done at The Box, we had a great time there and everyone working there were doing such a fantastic job at making guests feel safe.
s. f.
Amazing but of history the things you can find out. The staff are amazing and very knowledgeable really worth a visit.
L. E.
Great exhibit about the history of the port of Plymouth. Plenty of other things to look at and a great gift shop and cafe too.
M. D. G.
I mentor a 13 year old with special needs and this is a great place to stimulate learning and discussion on a myriad number of topics from "A"ntibullying and feelings of self-worth "to" "Z"oological classification🌞
P. P.
5 stars for the superb exhibiting space. The Mayflower exhibition was thought-provoking and the Plymouth history portion highly informative, interactive, occasionally humourous without being glib and pretty impressive display-wise (esp Mildred the Mammoth). It's free (you can donate via card at various points) and is thoroughly worth more than one visit. The gift-shop has some interesting gift ideas. One of Plymouth's key attractions.
The same cannot be said for the accompanying 'bistro'. Service was OK and quick-ish but 20 minutes to deliver a cold under-cooked poached egg is NOT acceptable. As with many Plymouth cafes, follow-up service is hopeless and not one server came to check on us after being served. I left most of the raw egg (I hate waste) and the accompanying starters were decent enough. Too hungry to take the dish back.
I'll certainly revisit the museum again, but not the cafe.
Z. C.
Absolutely fantastic. Mostly free. Please donate to keep it that way. Exhibits change over time so worth returning regularly. Brunch was great and not too expensive
J. F.
I really enjoyed our family visit to the Box. The staff were friendly and helpful. Great morning out.
S. D.
I recently visited the box with a friend. Not only is the admission free making it accessible for all but there are many different rooms which covered the science, history and fashion of Plymouth/Devon and more. My favourite part was the Mayflower exhibition brought to you by local artists. Angela which I found out volunteers for the box, had asked us if we would like to know more about each display and was brilliant. Angela was very informative and explained really well about the Mayflower history and the methods that were used and why. I will now look at art/exhibition in a different way!
J. M.
After being revamped during covid, The Box has emerged to be a brilliant local museum which some excellent exhibitions on Plymouth's history and life. You can whizz round in an hour or two, but I recommend going back in small chunks to really explore a couple of rooms. Going through some of the new interactive displays, you can see just how much information is hidden behind the scenes and is now becoming more accessible.
D. S.
Great museum. Plenty to keep a 5 year old interested. Our boy was pretty engaged by the displays and really enjoyed running around in the room with the images projected on the floor. This was a great discovery that was recommended to us by the chap working at Smeatons Tower.
J. B.
Very interesting, I am born and bred in Plymouth and at nearly 60 years old I found more history about my home town than I had known.
P. P.
Fantastic few hours spent here. Not enough hours, will be going back very soon and allow more time to take it all in. Very educational for young ones as well.
K. B.
Took my son with sen needs here and had a great couple of hours, he learned a lot and enjoyed the interactive parts.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and understanding about my sons needs.
Would highly recommend anytime but also a nice backup if the weather is poor as will keep the kids and adults alike entertained.
R. C.
The best new museum in the country. Fabulously accessible space, great mix of exhibits, superb modernisation of historic building.
C. L.
Great free entertainment for a rainy day. Free is a great price. I liked looking at the exhibits but some of the staff in the upstairs art gallery wers snobby and intrusive.
j. l.
Really interesting history of Plymouth. Good interactive elements throughout. Great for kids. Also interesting for adults. Well presented, flowed well.
M. C.
Really good museum! Went with my 6 year old and we loved it spent a good few hours there.
s.
A brilliant place to learn about the history of Plymouth and the a few great explorers. Staff were very helpful and friendly too.
J. j. (.
Very interesting,I have lived in Plymouth nearly all my life and I learnt alot about my home town ,well worth a visit
L. K.
Amazing space for all ages with great exhibitions kids loved the animal room especially the insects and spiders !
J.
We had the most amazing day.
The staff were fantastic and very knowledgeable
P. R.
Completely free and lovely little museum, wonderful focus on local heritage an goings on. Highly recommended
R. L.
Wow what a place, was there for 2 hours! Very informative. Covid safe. Paid Parking 10 minutes away
G. C.
Fantastic museum. Do allow yourself a bit of time to take it all in. Great for the individual as well as the family
G. H.
This contribution to history and science is an absolute splendour to the heart and soul that doesn't cost a penny to either. It's family friendly and a stimulating, thought provoking experience for family, friends and couples alike! The staff are wonderful and friendly, they introduce you with such passion when you first come in that they set up the whole experience on a great note for which a review does no real justice unless you actually go!
M. O.
We always enjoy a visit to the Box - eclectic collection with something different to notice every visit.
L. D.
We spent a fantastic afternoon here. So much to see and enjoy. The entrance has the wow effect, The Mayflower 400 exhibition was so interesting, I loved the timelines and the stories of the brave souls who undertook the journey.
The Plymouth archive film is wonderful and the natural museum is exhibited beautifully and artistically. There us a Plymouth in the blitz section and the Woolly Mammoth will be a great hit with children. The Explorer section is superb too.
I recommend planning to spend a lot of time here, we didn't see the exhibition at the Levinsky Building as we needed to get home to the dog !! We are older, but felt very safe with the social distancing and the constant cleaning of everything.
A. H.
The Box -Recently (Sep 2020) completely renovated and digitised museum.. A must watch piece of planet’s evolution across different era and millions of years of human evolution! And yes it’s completely free!
Activities for kids and school trips are planned and library access is very much useful ! Nice Restaurant downstairs
S. M.
First time I've been since before it became The Box. Very impressed with the building, layout and the displays. Spent a good 2 hours there but could have been more. Looking forward to going again , I'm sure that there are lots more to what I saw the first time. And it's FREE, although you can make donations.
M. T.
We (3 adults, 1 in a wheelchair, and my 5 year old) could have spent longer than the 2 hours we did, but we all really enjoyed our visit. Great exhibitions, super friendly and knowledgeable staff. A great attraction for Plymouth, highly recommended.
H. S.
Took the kids last weekend and it was barely recognisable! They've done a fab job doing it up and improving it. Definitely too much to see in one trip but what we did see was amazing. The volunteers are incredibly informative and everything is arranged cleverly with lots of interesting information about it. I especially appreciated seeing the staff commend other members of staff for keeping up social distancing for the public. It was lovely to hear positivity like that and support from fellow colleagues. Would 100% recommend. We will definitely be going back as soon as possible!
F. F.
Very interesting museum. Great disabled access and knowledgeable staff. Had a great afternoon.
M. F.
Amazing place love seeing old videos of Plymouth.. so much history. Many rooms so much to see. Lovely shop... cafe..
Huge Mammoth a must to see..
Sir Francis Drake drum .
History of the port of Plymouth.
Plymouth dockyard. How Plymouth have changed over the years.
I very highly recommend this place.
M. “.
Had a great time, lots to do and see 😃
J. K.
An amazing display of the real plymouth from its past to now.
A. B.
A rainy day experience. Recently completed a full refurbishment and I’m glad they kept some of the old features of the building. Seems more disjointed when walking around however we failed to spot the maps for a £1 on the way in. Lockers, toilets and a large restaurant. Displays are now more interactive and the shop is stocked with really interesting gifts. Some of the exhibitions are chargeable if you live outside of Plymouth, which seems a little unfair, given that one exhibit was £10 pp and the other £5 pp but, let’s face it, they need to make money for the museum to stay free to enter. A lovely place, with welcoming staff.
M. E.
One of the best museums I've been to. Interactive and fascinating. Really enjoyed it, especially the footage of yesteryear to the present day. The figure heads are the best but there's so much more to see. A mammoth and films about the fishing industry of Plymouth made this fish head's heart beat faster.
M. G.
Great free museum. Limited exhibits, but what they have is well presented.
K. M.
We visited the box to see the Songlines exhibition in January. The exhibition itself was absolutely fantastic, and the staff and volunteers were extremely knowledgeable and helpful as we made our way through the various exhibition spaces. There are some galleries with permanent exhibitions about the local area as well as the special exhibition rooms.
The cafe is also great, with delicious food (including veggie/gluten free options etc) and good coffee. There are a selection of lovely ships figureheads on display, hanging over the cafe space too.
P. B.
Absolutely loved the Songlines exhibition. V privileged to have it here in Plymouth. Fascinating insight into another group of people.
O. B.
I've enjoyed the times I've came here. It has so many interesting things to look at, especially the stuff about this city's history. They used to have a room full of old Plymouth photos with descriptions but they changed it into a COVID-19 room, weird change. The interactive tablets are a staple of this place, same with the old library and the globe room. The architecture of this place is also interesting as it feels very open and modern. I'm giving it a 4 as a fair rating as it isn't my favourite place but I still think its quite good.
K. H.
Great museum for Plymouth and very well presented for locals and visitors alike
T. B.
Our first visit and we we're very impressed. Educational and very enjoyable experience and free too!
We also took in the Mayflower 400 exhibit (first visit free to all Plymouth Council Tax payers) and found out many new details of the voyage and passengers. I know we will be returning again and again to the Box and it is another great reason to visit Plymouth, Britain's Ocean City!
K. H.
Very enjoyable I am looking forward to seeing what is going to be in the new gallery displays
N. P.
Very impressive and really interesting. It is completely focussed on Plymouth, it's history and how it has come to be. Will be returning as there is so much to take in and learn about
H. T.
The exhibits have been carefully chosen and the whole place is not too big and over bearing. It's informative, interesting and entertaining and well worth a few hours. Gifts and food are good quality although expensive, but then again, entry was free. We'll go again!
K. M.
It is always a treat to go to the Box. The cafe is very good and the quality of their exhibitions is high. We saw Songlines from Australia and we were not disappointed. It finishes at the end of February so do try and get there. You won't be disappointed.
S. D.
Was brilliant ,there for about 2hrs.will need to go back to take it all in .
Was early on a week day so relatively quiet.
Enjoyed a pleasant cup of coffee in the cafe.
Staff very good
S. S.
Very wheelchair friendly. Great that exhibits were all different heights so could be seen from low down. Staff great.
k. S.
Absolutely awesome exhibition, spread over various places close by , well worth going
L. W.
I am visiting family here in Plymouth and they booked us in to visit. My wife has problems with her eyesight and so I was having to read everything out to her. If you were to have touch and talk on the exhibits it would have been a lot better experience for both of us.
The lady in the entrance to the Mayflower exhibition was very informative and told us a lot of useful information. Well worth the visit.
G. K.
My son has lived in Plymouth for a decade, but for most of that time the museum has been closed. They have done a great job of invigorating the experience - interactive, exciting and up to date displays giving context to the city and its geographical and social history. Well worth a trip.
C. J.
Very interesting, didn't know the area had so much ancient history. Good turnaround of exhibitions and lovely shop beautifully curated with mostly earth friendly products
F. R.
An absolutely FANTASTIC museum, spent 4 hours here and feel like we barely scratched the surface. Great displays, the fascinating history of the city of Plymouth and the role it has played in our sea faring nation over the centuries is incredible. A treat for all generations, the new building space is welcoming and peaceful but also full of colour, life and light. The cafe served good food, at competitive prices, and I will be back often to continue to explore the many galleries but also to just sit and enjoy coffee in fabulous surroundings. Cannot recommend highly enough!
R. W.
Great museum and arts space.
J. O.
Very interesting museum containing a variety of items, maritime, technology, art, fishing and much more, mostly related to Plymouth area. An impressive display of ships figureheads greet you on entry.
There is no charge for entry except for special exhibitions. A donation to the museum will help to keep it open.
I'll be back for another visit soon.
J. J.
A fantastic venue with lots of information and interactive facilities detailing the history of Plymouth.
A. L.
An absolute MUST visit to tourists and locals alike. The different sections of the museum are incredibly well laid out & the whole experience is fantastic with so much interactivity that is exceedingly interesting.
There are things to do for children but mainly Plymouth in the Blitz and the Mayflower 400 amongst others are just extremely thought-provoking and humbling. I personally have attended the museum in Boston Massachusetts near the Plimoth plantation and have seen the whole Mayflower 400 experience from that side of the ocean. Plymouth UK is right up there if not better than their displays and their exhibits and the interactivity between the white man and the Wampanoag nation is told equally well from both sides. I 100% recommend everyone to visit when they are able. The naval section and the cafe restaurant are fabulous too.
S. L.
Wonderful displays, too much to take in, will visit again when a bit quieter.
C.
Excellent exhibits, quite an eclectic mix and well presented. Something for everyone. The exhibitions do change.
W. D.
I love a good museum. And it's got a massive hairy elephant.
H. M.
We were looking for something to do in Plymouth and came across The Box. Found it to be really interesting mix of history of Plymouth and the general area, including fishing history, media, naval and ships. Theres a cafe/restaurant on the ground floor, and the toilets were pleasant and clean. Good place to bring kids too, with plenty of interactive activities and movies. The Box is free to visit, although they ask for a £5 donation which by the end we were more than happy to give. They have a lovely little gift shop at the end too, with local goods, typical kids gift shop things and a few quirky bits too. Would love to visit again when in the area again
c. s.
Absolutely amazing money well spent. Everyone should go and this i know I will be going back as soon as I can.
A. B.
We had a great time...... To see it all will take multiple visits. The Box has great AV displays as well as some really interesting items. Most of the exhibition's rooms are free to see. There's is also one off exhibitions that need to be paid for, but are worth a look. Disabled access is good, with lifts to ask floors.
General more..........there is no disabled parking near the building that I could find. But there is a multi storey about 5 min walk away from the entrance.
M. W.
We enjoyed our trip to the box. It's filled local history. We loved the natural history displays.
It's free for all, it has one paid for display. The Mayflower exhibit which is £5. However if your a resident of Plymouth you can visit this for free too, after speaking with the front desk.
S. B.
I went to see the Plymouth nightlife exhibition. It was excellent, lots of photos, fliers, posters, well laid out and very interesting.
M. S.
Great staff nice clean facilities. Only down side is the parking on street and no dedicated parking
R. M.
Really interesting and varied galleries. The refurbishment has made all the difference and the cafe, shop and facilities are also good. Definitely worth a couple of hours to explore some on the exhibits.
S. G.
I love it! There is so much to be seen. So much history in one place. For me like a foreigner was really interesting to see all in The box, to read about Plymouth history, how dockyards have been built and etc. Mayflower exhibition was the one of most interesting part of our walk and I love the chance to speak with all volunteers there about different facts.
There is a car park very close to the museum - Regent Street Car park. Cafe is nice and cosy.
Recommended 100%! If you are near go to see it!
T. G.
Beautiful building and there's something that will interest everyone. My teenagers liked all the animal exhibits in the mammoth room. Excellent cafe with very friendly staff.
The people working here make the visit better, everyone was so friendly, helpful and welcoming.
J. H.
Wonderful Aboriginal exhibition, good use of technology given the art goes back 3500 years.
I liked the interwoven legend of the seven sisters.
Nice cafe and plenty of space in the exhibition areas.
Well done the Box, Plymouth
m. t.
Lovely venue for some live music but would of started the act later as 4pm was too early
S. L.
I went to see a special exhibition here - Songlines. Brilliant show - also really helpful staff and volunteers. Excellent restaurant too with vegetarian and vegan options - a little bit on the pricey side, but really tasty food. Our waiter was so helpful and friendly too.
G. F.
Well worth the visit. Grandchildren really enjoyed learning about history
S. C.
Wonderful insight into the history of Plymouth. An extremely well thought out and maintained museum with free entry. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!
p. w.
Excellent. Really have a handle on what a museum should be with a mixture of new and traditional exhibits. I particularly wanted to see the figureheads and there they were flying overhead, beautifully restored. Helpful staff and exhibited with a sense of space, well done.
C. T.
Give yourself a day here, there is so much to see. The whole family loved it and will be going back soon.
J. M.
Loved the gift shop here which had a good retro selection like the vinyl and cassette gifts and best of all Gus Honeybun toys, pictures and cards .. brilliant if you remember that moth eaten bunny who waggled his ears, winked and jumped up and down for children's birthdays (my excitement was lost on my other half and it will not be appreciated by everyone!)
Some fantastic ships figure heads are also displayed at this site which are worth a ganders.
M. S.
As a family we love the box, free to enter and loads to see and do for people of all ages. You only need to get a ticket if seeing an exhibit and I'd recommend booking in advance for these
I. J.
Good place to take kids on a rainy day.Expected woke re-intrepretation of Drake was relatively restrained. No idea where £42 m was spent.
H. R.
A fascinating museum and I'll definitely return.
k. l.
Really enjoyable museum covering a vast amount of Plymouth history. Ship figureheads and their restoration are incredible. Well worth a visit.
V. H.
FREE TO VIEW... No it's not TV but in real life. A wonderful collection of historical items and information for Plymouth. Well worth spending time in this free to enter museum.
P. S.
WOW. Well done, great displays loads of info on the history of Plymouth, loved the story of the dockyard . Definitely should be on your list of places to visit and it's FREE👍👍
B. D.
Wonderfully interesting museum, could have spent all day there. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was Free to get in.
A. B.
Fantastic museum, I couldn't believe how much there was to see, and excellent labeling and interactive exhibits. Good cafe too, bonus.
T. L. (. I. L.
The Box is a great day out and surprisingly free! Right away the staff were welcoming, informative and friendly, which continued throughout. There was a paid section, which was fairly cheap so we booked in to that also. The museum is very well set out with each corner (up and down) having a different theme, there really is something for everyone.
The gift shop as expected is fairly expensive, but it was great to see a books section, we ended up getting a book at the rrp, and a small soft toy at £20! We struggled to find the price but yeah, it was a bit steep, however they need to make the money somewhere and it was still a cheap day out.
After our visit ve made use of the cafe for coffee/soft drinks. The staff were very helpful and the coffee was nice, but could have been a bit warmer. It was very clean.
We traveled 2 hours to visit, it was our first time but definitely not our last!
T. N.
Excellent new / newly refurbished museum in the centre of Plymouth. Exhibits were all very well curated and interesting.
The cafe is a lovely space for coffee and cake and the service was friendly.
The archives are also based here and worth a visit, particularly for the city maps.
M. G.
So much to see ,so interesting, staff very informative ,idea for a day out
K. F.
Excellent free museum, staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. Particularly liked the 'flights' of figureheads (the main reason I went), but also particularly enjoyed the Mayflower 400 exhibition. £5.00 to get in to the Mayflower 400, but very informative.
A. M.
Great Museum, friendly enthusiastic staff
We saw the Seven Sisters Aboriginal Art Exhibition which is amazing. Only on until end February and would advise anyone to see it
We will be going again to see future exhibition's
T. B.
I really enjoyed it here. They have done massive amounts of work on the upgrade.
M. S.
Excellent galleries and exhibitions, with good food in the cafe.
B. G.
I was a little disappointed with my visit. The displays downstairs were interesting but too dark. It was difficult to see some things and the exhibits were too high in many cases to see clearly and were rather pointless. I can't see folks going in to sketch things like they used too. Don't think there was a much on show as there used to be either. Getting people to interact through the information screens was good but please put info next to the exhibits too.
C.
A very informative collection, amazing to be able to see the history of such a historical and influential city in detail - especially the story of the Mayflower.
I'd highly reccomend taking a few hours out of your day to walk around. It gives you the option to read as little, or as much, as possible, with in depth analysis of each item on display - alongside the larger information boards on the subject in general.
P. W.
Visited specifically to see the Mayflower 400 exhibition. It was a Wednesday afternoon and it was very quiet. Plenty of background to the reasons for the enterprise, with contemporary documents, but I found these hard to read, some highlighted interpreted extracts would have been helpful. I found the wall of pictures of descendents fascinating, but it was about 10 metres by 10 metres so only the bottom few rows were accessible. Moved on to the exhibits telling the story of the indigenous tribes, this was really interesting, explained in part by screens with looped videos, however one ran for 57mins, I didn't watch it through, and I can't imagine any other visitors did either. The shop was well laid out and very bright and inviting. We had tea in the cafe (table service) quick and reasonably priced. I look forward to a return visit to explore the permanent exhibits.
C. D.
Well worth a visit. This museum is representative of the best in modern presentation of historical events and artifacts and has something to engage all ages. The main museum/gallery is free of charge but there are charges for the special exhibitions which are mounted from time to time
a. k.
Amazing exhibitions, especially loved the films and the giant mamoutb
K. D.
Went to Songlines of Seven Sisters but stayed on to go around the Box. Had lunch and then afternoon tea and found all the staff friendly and efficient. The food was first class too. I feel the waiting staff could do with numbers being increased but they were great will definitely be going back
L. T.
Had a trip with school. Great organisation and interactive. Thank you.
N.
Fab museum. Huge improvement on this new venue. Very informative and fascinating. Interesting for all ages. Great movie about Plymouth. Interactive section fantastic for children. Huge array of wildlife and sealife displays. Well worth a visit!
C. K.
What a fantastic place! Everything about it was excellent, the exhibitions were beautifully curated and all of great interest. The building looks great and the restaurant served a lovely lunch. We spent far more time there than planned as there was so much to see.
M. T.
Great space. Many interesting and varied exhibits with just enough written information. Recommend the Mayflower exhibition. The archives can be booked for personal research. Too much for just one visit
L. N.
First time visit and originally from Plymouth. Loved it. Shop reasonably priced so had to buy a Gus Honeybun and a raft of books too. Nice little cafe. In all a great and worthwhile visit/experience. Well done Plymouth
t. w.
Outstanding. The way the old and new gallery/museum has been combined is very cleaver. The ship figure heads are a standout feature. The restaurant serves very good food, the staff are helpful and friendly. I recommend this venue in Plymouth.
J. S.
A true jewel in terms of exhibits and displays with a fantastic centrepiece of Mildred the Mammoth. Lots of local collections are a fabulous experience for the whole family with an excellent schools programme. Staff and volunteers are helpful and the media collection is stunning
n. B.
Staff need to scale back their information and staring. Let us decide the direction we take in the space and he w we process our thoughts and soul. They constantly talked to us and explained, believing we can't work the art etc out. I felt really uncomfortable. I've never ever experienced such attention at any gallery nationwide. Please review in your next meeting
S. D.
Fantastic museum exhibits, the kids really enjoyed the interactive screens and arts/crafts table. Excellent toilets and cafe too.
C. T.
Interesting place. Lots to learn. Very easy to reach with plenty of parking at Drake Circus.
B. H.
Very good. A cool building and loved the sea creatures. Nice cafe, I hope the staff return soon as it was a bit slow but a great, light and bright spot with cool chairs for a cuppa or grub.
A. W.
Great activity in central youth very interesting and engaging displays.
V. C.
Amazing museum. Great exhibits, very varied. But mostly enjoyed the accessibility, I can't stand for very long and there are so many opportunities to sit down and watch films all the way round and not too much reading. Ideal. Loved it!
M. J.
Very interesting well laid out with lots of interactive stations. Unfortunately I visited on a wet Saturday afternoon so it was busier than I would like. Will visit again but during the week.
A. J.
What a terrific experience.... My first visit to Plymouth city's exciting new Gallery and museum, The Box. I visited the current exhibition 'Songlines' which highlighted the Art and culture of the original people of Australia, The Aborigines.
Songlines takes you through the full experience in three stages. The main body of work is upstairs in the main building. There's a well worth viewing of a film in a seperate building where one sits and lies back to view the story of The seven sisters. It was a reminder of my London planetarium experience.
The third space takes a look at the materials used and the story behind the community paintings with clever video media.... The Modern style, 'The Box' while stiil retaining some of the old features, like the entrance steps, is well laid ot..
If you're a Plymouth resident then currently the £10 entrance fee is waived. Well worth a visit....

Amazing! So much to see and really well laid out. The staff are so friendly and helpful, and the food in the cafe is delicious! Definitely worth a visit but give yourself plenty of time

The box has a lot of interesting displays. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. It is also disabled friendly. I highly recommend visiting.
H. P.
A top Plymouth attraction all done with real quality. It tells the history of the city in an interesting and clear way, using a variety of media and exhibits. Well worth a visit.
A. C.
Was privileged to temporarily be project manager for the audio visual installation at this fantastic museum. Can't rate it until it's complete but looking forward to seeing some of the final exhibits especially the periscope within the Port of Plymouth gallery, which will give a 360 degree view of port.
N. T.
Amazing time at the Box!! It was such fun. We all loved it. Great exhibits, well curated and lots of interactive things to do. Didn't try the cafe but lots of nice selection in gift shop.
M. C.
Nice place hadn't been there before very nice meal good service I hadn't used the app before. Waited 3 minutes for the food very nice. I would recommend

C. K.
Great place to visit lot to see will need to visit again
F. C.
Great visit, lots to see and learn especially about Plymouth and it's history. Very helpful and friendly staff. Can't wait for the restaurant to reopen. The Little Box cafe opposite was ideal for a quick lunch before we went over to see the 'mammoth' and St Lukes. 👍
H.
The Seven Sisters Exhibition is excellent. A.must see if you are interested in Australian Aboriginal culture and art. Well presented over different exhibition spaces. Congratulations to the organisers and artists!
S. A.

C. B.
Full to the brim with excellent displays and interactive exhibits, the staff are polite and very helpful. I would recommend the box to everyone from 1year olds to100 year olds
L.
I went with my son and spent 2 hours there, yes at the moment you do have to wait for some things but that's nothing. The exhibits are great and the touch screens they have throughout are fantastic. Will definitely be going again.
D. W.
Great exhibitions, friendly staff, loved all the projectors and interactive aspects. Fascinating capture of bombs that fell in WW2 and we could see how close they were to our house!
S. H.
Always have an amazing time here for the I Wonder sessions with my little girl. The staff are always friendly and the making is always fun. Thank you to the engagement team!
T. G.
A small museum, but extremely well done. The displays and information screens are very good.
It's a shame the gift shop is very overpriced, but aren't they all? This one seems particularly expensive though.
Don't hesitate to visit though.
S. C.
What a fantastic transformation of the Plymouth Museum. A real credit to the city. A nice place to come and chill too. With desks and work areas. Decent shop with nice gifts and memorabilia of the Box.
M.
Fantastic aboriginal art exhibition, absorbing. A eye-opening journey and still only scratching the surface of the cultures of these amazing people and peoples. Don't miss it whatever your excuse, this is for everyone.
A. L.
The Box is a brilliant place to visit. There is plenty of interesting items to view, read and watch. I was highly impressed that so much had been done to show all these interesting artifacts. There really is SO MUCH to see too. Its educational for young and elderly alike. Entry is FREE for Plymothians. However there are electronic card donation stands. It only costs £5 donation. This is OUR museum. Let's help it out ladies & gents. Try the box. The staff are really helpful and friendly.
D. C.
Well worth a visit. Spent a couple of enjoyable and informative hours in the box. Will definitely be revisiting as I ran out of time to appreciate all the various exhibitions.
L. K.
My first visit. Wonderful aboriginal art and related stories. The Dome was a lovely experience, lying down and watching the story unfold on the ceiling.
H. N.
Arrived today only to find out that the actual day of entry I booked was for tomorrow. The staff at the entrance was extremely helpful in altering the ticket so that I could visit today.
Well worth the visit! Lots of interesting information and displays. Many staff on hand to explain or demonstrate how things work.
Very impressed with the
D. W.
Amazing place! First time I have been in here since the refurbishment, and I am very impressed with what they have done! I definitely recommend coming here. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable too.
D. V.
Very interesting place, I learned a lot about the history of Plymouth.
A.
Great museum, free and in a central location
R. S.
Interesting museum. Ideal to spend time in when the weather is rainy.
Good food in the restaurant too.
J. S.
Absolutely worth it !!! We have the opportunity to get to know Plymouth history during the second world war, get to know some local artists works, get to know more about the naval and marine history and the mayflower 400 journey !! The media lab is also pretty cool and the mammoth is a most to be seen!! Overall the Box is interactive and has a lot of different things to discover.
They follow the covid restrictions and it felt pretty safe. It was not crowded and we could be following our own pace and rythm.
If you have kids and you are looking for a cool activity to do Saturday Monday, I would 100% advice this.
* The staff was very friendly and provided guidance and information !!
L. W.
Interesting displays bring the exibits to life. It was very enjoyable despite being ram-packed with school trips on the day that we visited!
J. C.
Well worth a visit
M. S.
Absolutely brilliant! Kept a 12 and 14 year old (plus two 50+ year olds) occupied for a couple of damp and dismal hours. We didn't give everything our full attention so you could be in here for hours looking at the displays. Something to interest everyone
M. W.
So much to see at The Box you need more than one visit. Set in a beautiful building with many interactive displays and films. Also visiting exhibitions.
There is also a lovely cafe, bar and seating area. Well worth visiting.
G. H.
First visit but certainly not our last. It is an amazing place with so much to see and so many interactive touchscreen experiences. So much history I wasn't aware of and the Mayflower exhibition was phenomenal! Highly recommend a visit!
E. M.
Extremely busy but we'll managed. Lots to see. Has a nice coffee shop high is not to expensive. Free entry for Plymouth postcodes. Nothing to moan about when it's free entry
j. a.
Excellent displays free entrance nice cafe
S. b.
Really pleased that Plymouth has something as good as this. Wasn't sure how long to allocate for the visit but there is enough to see for a good 4/5 hour visit. Being a Plymouth resident no need to pay. Helpful friendly staff.
G. B.
Really interesting and free museum (supported by donations!) Both good for the topics covered and also as a break for walking around. The 3D history of Plymouth is really well done.
P. R.
Wow. Liked the Mayflower 400 exhibition.
J. S.
Lovely museum... not sure re cafe..
Disappointed about the size of portions and such a small plate..
As table service only we had to keep calling the waitress over to ask about the menu as it wasn't clear if there was bread with the dishes etc..
Didn't seem to be many waiters/waitresses...
Lovely hand made chips and slaw however..
L. M.
First time visiting The Box with my family and we all really like it. Great insight into local history from many different periods in time. Would definitely go again, you would need to visit a few times to take it all in.
M. M.
A must visit if you are in Plymouth and interested in the history of Plymouth.
I specially liked the sections with 100 Journeys and the 3D video on the history of Plymouth. I spent around 90 min. For a free musuem it exceeded my expectations.
S. T.
A fascinating journey into the past and the historical significance of Plymouth. There is a good layout and diversity of exhibits. The modern art was a little bit beyond my comprehension though!
S. B.
Difficult to get through doors upstairs with a wheelchair, needed both doors open! Seats very uncomfortable watching the videos. On the plus side, it's free for locals and there is some good things.
P. S.
From the point of entry to the point of exit, the staff and volunteers are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The entire refurbishment has been a triumph: the entrance with the figureheads is stunning, the displays are beautifully laid out and arresting, the exhibits are extremely interesting, the audio-visuals are fascinating and arresting, and the food in the restaurant smells delicious! Also .... there's an adorable life-size woolly mammoth! I mean, what's not to love about that?
St Luke's Church opposite, also part of The Box, has had a richly-deserved complete renovation. It's a lovely building, but (in my opinion) the space is being wasted. It would have been an amazing opportunity to gather together all of the local history archives, maps and records together in one space and open it to the public as a Local History Research Centre. Maybe one day?
J. L.
Really interesting place for everyone. Lots for kids to interact with. Spent at least 2 hours here and could have easily stayed longer.
Nice but busy cafe too with good food.
Q. o. S.
Great place but needs lots of visits to take everything in
J. W.
Lived in Plymouth over 30 years ago and this museum brought back many happy memories from archive films of the dockyard and fishermen to Gus Honeybun (a firm favourite of kids in the 1970s and 80s) with his cruel Mum - Judi Spiers, who used to give him a good clip around the ear everyday on local ITV. It would be impossible for anyone not to find something of interest in the vast array of exhibits.
It has taken me 50 years to find out how Plymouth became a city in 1928 with no Catholic cathedral and no university. One of the ladies in the museum didn't know either but she kindly found out for me. Well worth the visit for that information alone. Very interesting.
D. M.
Newly reopened for the Mayflower 400, The Box is a great look into the past of Plymouth and even the World. It covers Plymouth's rich Naval history also and even has a new exhibit that focuses on the Mayflower 400 Anniversary which we found most interesting. Cafe on site is recommended, good sized portions of cake and the service was good too.
G. B.
Great place to showcase Plymouth. All the family enjoyed going around and learning about Plymouth and the people that have either lived here or set sail from here.
E. A. D.
I remember when this was the city library and museum so very pleased to see all the great architecture still there with a very modern exhibition layout. Very helpful staff to help you. Will be back.
E. H.
Definitely worth going and helpful staff. Has lots of artefacts and brilliant exhibitions about the local area and beyond. Cafe was nice. Only thing is I would've liked to have seen more!
A. G.
Interesting and enjoyable place to visit and that for free
T. S.
Great museum. Nice shot films to watch. Loved the reconstruction model for the city centre after the war. Cafe was good too. Friendly service and a good beer
S. C.
An absolute gem in Plymouth. Brilliant and helpful staff and amazing displays that range from natural history to docks and ship building.
My 6 yearold loves it and well definitely be back bringing Gran and Grandad.
M. W.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. A must for Plymothians interested in our history.
R. W.
Was really looking forward to seeing the museum and took the family along, we're from Plymouth and felt there was some lovely information relating to our past but in terms of the rest, we or I felt it was a bit of a disappointment tbh, I was gutted as I really felt it was going to be brilliant, the staff were very polite and helpful, really good. It's just the venue was a bit like it was nearly there but just fell short. A massive room with videos of people talking, what a waste of space, to many big gaps and some of the exhibits were too small.
The museum in Exeter for example has more to offer, we're a big city, why are we not striving to better what they have?
I'm unfortunately in no rush to return which is a shame.
M. A.
An amazing place to visit - so much to see and learn - FOR FREE!!!
K. M.
Lovely place to visit well worth a visit very interesting and historical.
L. S. T. I. #.
I went to the BOX For the first time on 27th June 2021. Its the must go to place inn Plymouth and South West UK. Very inspiring from the inside. I would like to see the same sort of hope and motivation brought back to the outside of the building inn to the City as a whole and South West. in general. I have been recording a cross section of Plymouth culture and life, Music, The arts for 30 years. There is a wealth of talent that need support and a break. There is no reason why Plymouth can not promote the arts and creativity from the City at an International level. he brain set in some areas still needs to change.. I will be going to the BOX As often as I can. It brings all my hard work over the years in to perspective. Lets all work together to bring back the spirit of adventure, back in to Plymouth and South West
I. M.
Fantastic!! I was really hoping this would be the tourist attraction that Plymouth has been crying out for and I wasn't disappointed!! Brilliant!! Well done all those involved in bringing this attraction to Plymouth and well done to all those who make it a very safe environment to be in too!! Fabulous!!
S. M.
Really enjoyed the Box. Especially to see the Mayflower 400 exhibition (I'm related to William Bradford) and to see the Figure Heads...my 2nd Great Grandfather served on HMS Topaze on her maiden voyage to the Pacific, so wonderful to see this figure head restored.
C. B.
Amazing place to visit. Especially if you have kids. Keep an eye on their website for children's activities.
T. S.
Fantastic journey to the past...
R. L.
Amazing, if you go to Plymouth don't lose it.
L.
Absolutely wonderful place to visit as a family to learn all about the history of Plymouth! Didn't realise it was quite so Plymouthcentric but it was very interesting and engaging. The children loved it as did we and we cannot wait to revisit when covid restrictions are lifted.
N. S.
Great and very interesting couple of hours so much I never knew about Plymouth. It’s free so definitely worth a visit

It surpassed my expectations and booked straightway again as feel I missed so much and want to share the experience with my boyfriend as know he'll love it, especially meeting Colin lol 😉
L. H.
Brilliant, fascinating history of Plymouth. Really got into the WW2 exhibits. The heads off the old sailing ships really catches your eye. I would recommend
it, I'll be back.
C. H.
Great addition to plymouth. The museum is a well laid out with a great mix of exhibits and use if digital and displays. Learnt alot and enjoyed my time there and saw the Wooly mammoth!

K. H.
Such a wonderful museum! I felt like I learned so much. It was informative and interesting and accessable to all. Would highly recommend.
A. K.
The best place to spend quality time with friends and family. Brilliant museum, fantastic experience!
L.
Wonderful space, lovely staff and galleries. I thought it was smaller than expected and sad to see Talthybius and some of the old exbibits gone. The Wampum exhibition was very moving. I hope the Mayflower replica finds a permanent home here! It should stay. Loved the archive; my favourite part.
A. S.
Impressively setup museum with a lot of novel ways to show content and get viewer engaged. Items in museum were very interesting but I was more impressed with the museum itself and all the fun setups they had.
l. p.
Visited the Songlines exhibition at The Box depicting the story of aboriginal art......absolutely fantastic and very worthwhile. Would definitely recommend everyone visits.
J. M.
Amazing place! Fascinating exhibits, spacious, great staff. Absolutely essential visit for anyone - plymothian or not. Cannot wait to return
C. L.
Our first visit to the box and it was great, especially with the social distancing in place. The exhibitions flowed really well and the directions were clear. The staff and volunteers were really helpful to direct and inform about the items displayed. Would recommend to locals and visitors to learn more about the city and history surrounding Plymouth.
R. W.
First time I've been truly blown away by anything in Plymouth. Well laid out , knowledgeable staff & easily comparable to London museums. Definitely booking a 2nd visit as I couldn't fit it all in...
R. B.
Nice free museum with a fantastic cafe/restaurant
Food was lovely, staff helpful, and museum very informative without being stuffy.
G. Y.
My first visit. It won't be the last! What an amazing addition to the City. Very helpful staff and volunteers. You can't do it justice in one visit so many interesting exhibits and exhibitions. The building and the St Luke's Church looks really good as well. All in all 10 out of 10.
J. G.
A great day out, exhibits are interesting and well presented. Suitable for all ages with some useful interactive presentations. Cafe was excellent and staff throughout were friendly and helpful.
F. J.
Very Nice And Modern Place. It Is Informative, Fun And Most Importantly The Food In The Café There Was Fantastic Would Definitely Recommend!
L. H.
Ok, not much for kids. Shame as the previous museum was much more child friendly.
T. R.
Amazing visit to The Box today. The hand sanitiser, which is everywhere was the best quality i have experienced throughout the entire pandemic. Loved seeing the Mammoth. Will recommend a visit to all my friends.
S.
A smaller but fantastic museum.
Staff are polite, helpful and knowledgeable. An effort is made to engage children with various activities especially for them.
The museum is completely free to visit and is especially good when struggling to find something for the children on a rainy day.
The art galleries mainly display traditional art, however some modern art is exhibited.
This location is wheelchair friendly with access to all floors.
D. A.
Lots of amazing local history ,a fantastic space and very easy to loose yourself for many hours. Spent 3 hours here but need to go back as still have at least 3 galleries to see. Well worth a visit and excellent exhibits
J. D.
Went to see Songlines, absolutely beautiful. Such a great asset to Plymouth, people sometimes don't appreciate how lucky we are to have such a great place to visit
M. P.
It was fun and interactive, ots to do and see. Good cafe and gift shop
J. Q.
A return visit and as enjoyable as the first time, lots to see and plenty of interactive bits and bobs too. Light and airy not musty and dusty like museums of old!
T. k.
Very well put together
G. B.
Easy access , lifts available to all floors
Lovely cafe on the ground floor ,
Took a leisurely walk around the museum 👍
D. C. M.
Major infrastructure project to build an ethnopôle for Plymouth and Devon. As you can see one of the early suggested names, back in 2017, was The Plymbox. Look out for our research day in September 2019, called Outside The Box.
K. K.
Not quite finished yet. But great exhibition on at the moment. An enjoyable day out, cafe looked really nice and was packed so must be good.
J. S.
Songlines - Tracking the seven sisters was a terrific display and back story. The Bix also has much more to see, like archival video footage from the southwest.
M. J. Y. T.
Absolutely loved it! You must go. Stunningly put together and such a lot to learn about Plymouth and much much more......and it's free!!
H.
Great place for the whole families.

We went for the first time to see the exhibition. We were so surprised with elegance and exhibits that made us want to come again. Staff were fantastic and very helpful.
D. S.
Great place to visit and the majority is free of charge. Very interesting and well signed.
The bar/restaurant is excellent. The home made flatbread was delicious. Definitely worth a visit
i. b.
This was a good exhibit. An ok way to spend the day, with some real gems in in there. However, I'm at three stars because in an exhibit about a trans man, they decided to use his deadname. This was truly disappointing to see.
M. R.
So very interesting. Staff excellent. Not to be missed
M. G.
A real hidden gem! We only managed to look round the ground floor, but there are some fantastic bits here. Plenty of engaging activities (make your own paper crane... kept us busy for a while!) and interesting facts - particularly about the relationships between Britons and Anglo-Saxons. The smells of history was also a fascinating and quirky display.
J. H.
Excellent experience! Well worth the waiting for it to open!Hopefully it will be a must do for locals and provide a place of interest to visit for visitors!
C. E.
Went to the box for the first time and I wasn't disappointed so much better than the old museum great interactive and video displays the staff were all very helpful and went beyond to tri and find a gift from the shop that my grandson wanted. Will be back soon
R. R.
We recently visited to see the aboriginal exhibition called "Songlines: tracking the seven sisters" and we really enjoyed it. What a coup for Plymouth to be the first place outside Australia to have this exhibition.
K. T.
Fantastic museum with lots of great exhibits, so much to see looking forward to returning again soon.
G. F.
Was a fantastic visit to The Box today. It lived up to its expectations. The Mammoth Room was really enjoyed by my grandchildren 5&3 years. We would definitely go back and visit again.

Special place. Vvvv interesting and hosts a variety of high quality exhibitions. Oct to Feb is the Australian Songlines exhibition. Striking, interesting and will only be shown in Plymouth in the UK.

G. A.
I love this place. Fascinating, brilliant interpretation, wonderful cafe with helpful friendly staff and delicious food

Few items highlighting the golden era of Elizabethan Plymouth. Too much focus on Post WW1, The Blitz and television. Very modern and clean museum.
S. H.
First visit to the Box today and what an experience. The old museum has been brought right up to date with fantastic displays and collections
Particularly liked the archive section with the interactive maps of Plymouth and the photographic history on the walls. Also very nice cafe, friendly helpful staff and great shop. Will be back soon as there too much to take in on one visit.
K. P.
