Good connection between London and Southampton. Over one hours train or National express bus. Went there and stayed over the night. Nice city and good shopping center. Good night life, plenty of pubs and restaurant. Highly recommended to visit this city.

What remains of the Bargate is interesting and there's a lot of history on this site. Such a pity that the walls on either side were demolished in the last century, to make way for the motor car. It would be a much better experience if the old walls were intact, joined up and fully navigable. Lots of mistakes and missed opportunities are very evident if you visit Southampton's walls today....

Beautiful and still standing. The lions of the Bargate are here to stay! However, around it the transformation is taking place. Not sure if it's going to be a positive or a negative outcome. We shall see!

If you visit southampton do check this place out ,iconic place depicting the history of southampton. Nice and tidy as well as good restaurants nearby. If you are planning to do shopping westquay mall is nearby too.

This is more todo with the German Christmas market in the precinct opposite the Bargate. Lots of chalets selling food drink and other goods for presents etc. Close by is the outdoor ice skating rink

There's an exhibition hall within the Bargate, but main events are happening on Above Bargate street with one of the main events being a German Christmas market (2017: opening Nov 11th with Christmas lights switch on just before 17 o'clock followed by Santa's arrival on a flying sleigh).

Who am I to review it, it's been there hundreds of years since 1180. It is certainly a popular place for homeless people. The council should really wash and disinfect the paving stones at least twice a day.

It’s huge, interesting and more than that weirdly middle of nothing

The historic walls of Southampton mainly date back to the second half of the 14th century when the town at that time was completely enclosed in a 1.25 mile structure. Various parts have been removed over the years to allow roads and building work, but large sections remain and are a tourist attraction. A highlight is the old Bargate in the Main Street which makes a fine sight. There are walking tours run by local guides which set out from the Bargate itself and details can be found online.

A once proud gate that now stands as an iconic piece of Southamptons history. Not much to say really about this. Along parts of Southampton, most notably near the port in which, Southampton is renowned for. One can find parts of the walls and some buildings dating back to the 14th century.

In itself this building is not much, but it's part of a much larger set of walls that make up the town Walls of Southampton. Walking tours of the city meet here to start, and if you're having to wait for any length of time then this is perfectly situated in the centre of town to do other things in the meantime.

Southampton High Street area is dominated by this historic building. Lots of improvements are taking place around the Bargate area which will improve the area no end. Minutes walk from West Quay shopping centre and High Street. Guided tours are available too ( check the times though ).

Thursday Night is Motorcycle Night. From 18:00 to 20:00 through the summer! On a warm evening as many as 500 or 600 bikes of all types. Includes 125's...Roadsters... SportsBikes...Old...New...and some you've never heard of!

Lots of pubs, restaurants and a historical landmark here to!. West Quay retail Park just a stones throw away, with lots of shopping available and quite a few discounted items already before Xmas! Bus stops outside, and every 10mins or less. Lovely place to visit! Disabled friendly, parking just around the corner with easy access to the front doors 😀 coming back again soon! 5*

Proudly alone amid a plethora of soulless commercial premises stands Southampton's Bargate, the original Norman gatehouse guardian of the old walled city. This atmospheric building has seen so many comings and goings for around 800 years, from trams running through its central opening to the bombers of WW2 which helped to destroy many of the old buildings of the city round about it. It's even defined our place names. North of the gatehouse, the street is known as Above Bar. And to the south, Below Bar.It's even been seen at various times in the past as a nuisance, and there were several suggestions in the early 20th century to actually knock it down! So it's not just contemporary town planners who have moments of madness.

It's nice to walk around, but that takes 5 minutes. Sometimes they use it for an art gallery so you can go inside to look and they do tours which take you up to the roof.
