Reviews of Eling Tide Mill Experience
D. 1.
Totton’s hidden gem. Not the South of France but if you live nearby a pleasant place to relax and take in the scenery.
J. G.
Nice day out. The Mill has undergone major renovation. Very interesting History, not just the mill but local area too. A 10 second walk across the road is the mills nicely priced cafe and an activity/history room all part of the same ticket.
Lovely walk round the large mill pond and shore front.
Local pubs on both sides of the water and church.
Well worth the visit.
S. W.
Great reception and very interesting place. Enjoyed the interactive bits - especially milling some flour.
M. M.
Brilliant little museum looking forward to when it opens again. Nice setting overlooking the small harbour
N. K.
An interesting visit to this 900 year old fully working mill and visitor centre. Not huge but interesting. Check tide times as it only runs on the ebb tide. Staff really helpful. Things to do for kids. Gift shop and an excellent cafe across the road with very reasonable prices. Check for Groupon offers. You can even buy flour that has been ground in site.
I. C.
1st visit for walk and cafe stop. All good.
A. D. R.
It's a small spot but quite nice to see. Unfortunately part of the view ends up in the commercial port of Southampton but you can. Try avoiding that. There's also a small shop but one side of the bridge
A. T.
Great walk from the bridge that goes around the mill pond and to Goatee beach, most of which is accessible. About 3km in total.
J. H.
A lovely evening was spent here. A large menu mainly Italian food, but also meat and chicken dishes. Good service, not rushed, and reasonable prices.
T. M.
Love it Love the area Friendly atmosphere tight at the ocean's edge. Five stars from me.
A. P.
Very interesting museum with enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff, visitor centre and cafe. Local walks (if you don't get blown away!). Well worth a visit.
C. B.
A lovely place to visit well worth a stop
L. W.
Amazing! Good videos interpreting the place, really interesting seeing the mill working, and lovely volunteers on hand to answer questions. The cafe looks nice, didn't try it this time, and the little gift shop is well stocked with relevant items. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon, bring walking shoes and do the nearby millpond walk too!
J. L.
Really nice and warm welcome from the team
C. W.
Fantastic board walk with great views.
A. R. B.
Brilliant place for the family, little playground for children and a nice open field with a view of the sea and the docks. You can also sometimes see big cruise ships that have docked in the docks and has a very nice trail by the river to walk with a dog or family which leads to a massive field with a big playground and a children's splash pool.
Overall perfect place.
A. D.
Pretty interesting area! The area has a nice board walk with very picturesque views. Sitting down isnt an issue either, there are many seats that you can take to your advantage. I have also seen many dogs repeatedly being walked around the area, so i can only imagine its great for dog walks.
I have been in the mill myself, the process of bread making was fascinating, especially from a little kids point of view. If you want a trip in the near future! This place is for you.
L. B.
Very good and well presented
T. “. A.
Very good to relax and enjoy the weekend
A. K.
Short visit but nice place if you find the secret beach. There is also a place to grab a drink or something to eat.
p. w.
Love this place. Perfect for walking the dog or having a picnic and seeing the boats at Eling sailing club
K. T.
Interesting history with a great video commentary about the milling process. Nicely renovated interior which enables one to see the workings of the mill. A cottage style cafe is across the road serving light lunches and teas and coffees. Not suitable for disabled people due to the number of stairs.
T. T.
Unique quaint querky fascinating Olde World mechanical operation
D. B.
Despite the rainfall, the area is an oasis of beauty set within a busy area. Plenty of space to walk. Water views with boats in harbour. Set across the water from Southampton Docks, there is a stunning contrast between the working docks on one side of the water and the calm walking environment on the Tide Mill side. There is a play area, a cafe, a museum and different walks available. There are public conveniences available too.
M. W.
Interesting detail on how wheat is ground and how the mill works. Extensive renovation has been made to the mill itself making it a solid, good to see, exhibit. Has small room with history of the mill, and hands on exhibits. Tearoom with snacks also on site. Parking is free but £1 to cross toll bridge.

Just discovered how this place has come on leaps and bounds since its refurbishment. There is a picnic area overlooking the nature reserve, nice non-tacky gift shop selling local products and interesting books, and the café's cheese cake alone is worth a 200 mile round trip, I kid you not, dear fellow cheesecake fan!!! Next time we will come with enough time to actually visit the museum...
S. R.
Beautiful location never did the mill experience unfortunately, was working in the area. Could not believe that the houses facing the marina where housing association. Wow I work 2 jobs and would love to live somewhere like that. I think I will go on benefits too and maybe I will get too live somewhere as Beautiful as that 😡
R. W.
Such a beautiful peaceful part of our history. Last functioning tide mill in the country I believe. Lovely walks in both direction up river and along the coast line.
Toll bridge here so beware and have a pound ready.
Car park next to the cemetery is usually quite empty. Toilet block on site.
Kids park a couple of minutes away as well. Lovely little pub if you're hungry too.
J. H. C. B.
During height of the lock down, this was the only place I was able to buy flour and yeast. There is a little hatch opening from the shop where you ask a helpful bloke how many flour bags you want and he gives it to you. Its good quality flour, milled in a hundreds of years old Tide mill, I will continue buying this flour and supporting them.
B. D.
Terrific experience. Excellent customer service. Cafe really good. Staff very knowledgeable, set in beautiful surroundings.
J. S.
We went along to the tide mill while on holiday in Hampshire and although it is small it is a lot of fun to look around especially when it's going full tilt. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and there's a little hide and seek game for little ones to play as they go round where they win a prize if they find all the little mice. It doesn't take long to go all the way round but it could well fill an hour if you have time (and no kids) and can enjoy the film and looking in detail at all the bits and bobs. The little shop sells a good range of tide mill flour products and the biscuits are fantastic! A nice little place to visit.
R. T. (. W.
I was genuinely amazed that this tide Mill still exists, given the timber construction and what happened inside, but am very pleased that it does and am delighted that it is still working, even if only one of the four sets of wheels are currently operational. The neighbouring cafe and exhibition are an integral part of the experience and I found the exhibition to be very informative. Car parking is by the cemetery which is a short walk from the mill and is accessible via a historic toll bridge. Deserves another injection of cash, to make it fully operational again, as that would be quite an experience. Eling flour/bread/cakes would also be a worthwhile addition to the local economy.
H. C.
An interesting wander around on a Sunday Eve. Apart from the noise from the jet skis, it was a quiet visit. We also walked along the river and experienced the rural setting on one side of the river and the container port on the other. We could also see a cruise liner depart in the distance. A hidden gem. We didn't visit the mill as it was closed.
G. P.
Great place for kids to run around. Recently had a refurbishment. Public toilets are available. Go through the cemetery and out the other side for a lovely walk. Try and ignore the containers.
A. C.
A wonderful little Museum for those with a love of history, where this tide mill is partially restored to be working and producing flour, from its origins back as far as the 1700's if not before. Well worth a look.
Leading up to it beware of the disappearing road signs from the A326, that said there is a great car park just before you enter the cemetery and lovely walk across the bridge. Also be careful of the traffic which uses the narrow Toll Bridge.
Lovely spot to view the boats associated with the Eling Sailing Club ( Which occupies the other section of the Mill as its Club House) as well as the tranquil milll pond and its restored path alongside.
A. m.
Lovely place to come and relax and watch the world go by. Some nice benches near the pub. The opposite side to the hill is the church which rings it's bells frequently this too is nice.
B. 5.
Great time and learnt loads, new Eling experience building is great!
J. C.
Really good value for money. The Miller was really enthusiastic and interesting. The building beautifully restored, and the exhibits fascinating. And best of all, even on a bank holiday weekend, it was quiet.
C. S.
Worth a visit, excellent cafe, ladies dish up good grub. The mill and how it worked very well set out. Church on the hill also a visit, parking other side of toll Bridge. 70p.
J. S.
Interesting old tidal mill. Being restored so couldn't see it working today. Watch out for all the low ceilings! Nice cafe and exhibition too. Great way to spend an hour or two.
D. L.
Did a 3d printing session run by Dan. Very interesting. Was aimed for kids 6-16 but adults expected to stay with your kids. Kids design and hand in a suggested drawing for a 3 d object. Was quite difficult for my 2 Grandkids aged 13 and 8. Waiting for an email telling us to.pick up their 3d object.
P. W.
It's a good time to visit as only a few people are allowed in at a time. It's better when the tide is in . The exhibition centre is nicely done also.
P. D.
Bartley water is good to explore. Cafe is very nice. We had iced coffee and cake but they do hot food too.
G. S.
Lovely old mill - still grinding flour. Good cafe and interpretation centre.
P. W.
I love this place. Not just the mill, but the surrounding area. Good walking and fishing. Downside being the idiots on jet-skis and motorboats who appear on and off, ignoring speed limits, creating noise and damaging wake.
K. P.
Lovely walk along the board walk, then up to the church through to a grassy walk to the water with views across to Southampton docks.
J. M.
Fantastic place to visit with great views.
L. D. S.
Something different. It's very picturesque at high tide and everything is well laid out. The surrounding area is also very attractive, with many small boats moored nearby. Worth a visit.
S. H.
Didn't visit museums but launched kayaks and enjoyed a paddle, good fun but watch out for bigger boats
J. C.
A lovely historic place to visit.once you have looked around, you have Ealing quey where you can get a drink, and relax looking at the boats,or have a walk to goaties beach, just over the toll bridge, where there is a big green where you can let your kids and dogs have a play.
P. B.
Interesting place to visit, dating almost 1000years back and so close to Southampton. Good for visit on free afternoon. Coffee shop on side.
r. e.
it is a great place to go crabing as i have caught a lot of crabs and enjoy letting them go on the slip road. However, the tide times are a problem never the less ill still go crabing. Overall, it is a great place for the whole family
J. M.
Excellent club really enjoyed the people and atmosphere.
S. A.
