Reviews of Swansea Castle
B. R.
For a defensive structure that’s almost a thousand years old, it’s reasonably well-preserved.
As per the signs outside, this is not the original castle or the remnants of one, it was intact re-constructed over a 100 years later - the original castle no longer exists.
Personally, I’m not sure when the grills in the window openings were fitted. While they may look old but are they actually a 1000 years old? I seriously doubt it.
As this is open to the public, there are no tickets at all, one can walk in anytime and admire the “defensive” structure.
Located in Castle Square, it’s adjacent to Wine Street, a street frequented by pub-goers. There are pubs and restaurants all around, including McDonald’s.
Try visiting this structure in the evenings when there are fewer cars on the road.
K. N.
Very nice, it's a medium sized old castle. But good enough to visit with kids. Walkable from the high street. Nice lawn to sit and relax. Sometimes you can see gatherings like Queens Jubilee celebrations happening in the lawn. Good for childrens. 👍
H. V.
It's a small structure without any unique features. Can be seen within 5-10 minutes
N. B.
Not much left of the ancient castle, thanks to ww2...but it has become an open air visitor attraction with seating and picnic space in the heart of the city
N. D.
Not too much still exists of this once imposing castle. A lot of work has been done in recent years to conserve both the historic castle and also attempts to rejuvenate the gardens in front with interesting fountains, a large screen and an amphitheatre like seating area.
Unfortunately being at the end of Wind St. which is full of bars and club's, it can be quite boisterous. As such it's best to time your visit to avoid the the hustle and bustle of revelers.
M. W.
The other reviews are true. It is a pretty small grounds with no inside access, and modern building have gone up all around. That said, what is left is pretty amazing. It survived war and still looks pretty dang decent! It made me smile when I was walking to it and the modern city opened up and there it was! Totally out of place (nowadays) but still standing in all its glory! Not somewhere I'd say to go out of your way to visit, but if you are in the area, stop by and take a look. It's free and open to the public!
J. P. P.
Brings back memories, used to go here all the time as a teenager.
Never really paid much attention to it.
Nice to see it now as an adult, and appreciate it more.
It is strange having a castle ruin in the middle of a city, but nice in a way with the old and new together.
Well worth a visit.
C. M.
nice castle, u can eat fast food by the benches and people watch in this historical location
F. O. F.
Great to see how the council kept part of the castle in the middle of the town. Would have been nice to have more information about the castle as we were visitors from another part of the UK.
d. d.
Nice ruins. You aren't allowed inside. But the space outside is great to sit and relax or have a picnic
C. W.
It was really nice to see the ruins within the city, its a must visit when walking around the centre of Swansea.
A. R.
Not much to see. Just a few walls, vastly over dominated by the nearby BT office building. Any info you might have got about it is on a very faded info board. As you walk up to it from the bottom of the steps it first seems like the fountain and the waterfall stairs are part of the same area, but they're on opposite sides of the road and your time is better spent looking at those frankly.
C. M.
It is a nice ruin to visit, but it just the outside (there is no attraction on the inside). I think it is a must to take pics there.
R. a. t.
Castle remains amidst the city. Could have been maintained better. Not worth going just for the castle, but could drop by while on a walk to the museum or city centre.
D. W.
The castle is located at the city centre and easily accessible.
B. G.
Not much there as Welsh Castles go but it looks great in the city centre amongst modern buildings.
Spend 5 minutes here looking over Castle Gardens the pop to Wind Street for an alcoholic beverage!
E. W.
A nice centrepiece to the town, however everything can be seen in a 2 min walk around the outside. Massive BT tower also stands menacingly behind it.
G. L.
It was a good experience and interesting to see 👀 the history of the place
S. A.
Information on site is really nice. Found out that this "new" castle was built in 1290
A. G.
Only the outside is accessible but it's still interesting to look around.
S. P.
Lovely piece of history smack bang in the middle of the city
i. o.
if you're a tourist you'll find this very pretty, nice to take pictures other than that not much.
S. b.
Little bit boring for a half term holiday. No activities. Only the carousel that my daughter loves and that's nothing to do with the council... Make an effort Swansea Council...
K. C.
Historical wonder.
Swansea should definitely make more of it.
No changes, was hoping to see purple lights lighting it up for the jubilee but there was no sign at quarter to eight
M. N. Y.
Located in the heart of the town
G. K.
Nice place to sit down and have food or rest..lov swansea
R. B.
Just remains of a castle. No interactive activities, not much of information. It's even hard to walk around of what is left of the remains (cause its blocked by newer buildings). The only possitive things there are benches to sit and have a rest and a beutifull fountains near by.
R.
Didn't even know Swansea had a castle but on spotting it as we walked around we were pleasantly surprised to see some details on it & took some photos 👍🏼
M. F. A. E.
Right beside all the pubs and restaurants you could ever need.
E. C.
You can't go inside, but it's pretty great to be walking up the high street and randomly see a castle in the middle of 'downtown' Swansea.
A. M.
Located in the city centre and around modern architecture, its quite cool seeing a piece of history.
K. K.
Really nice. In synthesis with City;)
E. W.
Very nice seeing the castle
A. C.
Nice place but nothing special
D. J.
We didn't fine any entrance to the castle on sunday at 11. I assume the castle is now closed. So nothing much to view there. At a short distance is a Mumbles pier which is a good place to spend half a day
P. s.
Quite a spot in the centre of Swansea. Be a good idea to maybe get some sort of outdoor seating and bar built onto it.
A. L.
Seagull mess everywhere with pwoe feeding them. Adults swearing in the middle of everyone. People drunk stumbling about the place. Not a good place to sit in the sunshine. Not good for children to see or hear.
P. C.
Cosy, friendly, clean and tidy with a nice ambience. Food and service really good but the food was outstanding for all of us that ate there.
E. W.
The area has nice seating and is close to the shops and take aways, so my daughter and I sat down on a bench enjoyed our sandwiches and watched the world go by.
It is a ruin and there are no rooms to go into. And it is free.
S.
It's great now they've developed the surrounding area, it's a lot more accessible. Prior to this, behind the castle was a gathering point for litter and shady characters. On note of accessibility, more open days are needed
P. S.
I showed my 'out of town' grandson round and this was included
M. B.
A fantastic ruin in the middle of Swansea, it is lacking an information board. It is free to wander around.
J. S.
When u see my photo, you’ve seen all of it. That’s it.
R. B.
Is the hostile architecture around the castle needed? Benches that have bars to stop homeless people from sleeping on them is unnecessary. However, the castle itself is pretty.
A. P.
Take this as a warning from history on what not to do to your most important historical building. Don't just shove concrete on to "repair" things, and don't be blasé about the things around you. Take some time, occasionally, to enjoy the things around you. Whether you're looking at the oldest surviving building in Swansea, or something like the elephants on High Street, or any of the lovely parks around, relish the opportunity to stand and stare.
A. V.
Not much leftover from when ever it was at its best
S. H.
Not much remains of this Grade I listed castle and Swansea City Council have done much over the last several years to make what's left safely accessible. Occasionally, around Septmber, the council sometimes opens up access to the remaining rooms, dungeons and cells, complete with ancient graffiti. That's worth a visit if this happens again.
P. D.
The history of what remains of Swansea Castle is much more impressive than the residual stone walls. The majority of the original edifice having disappeared a long time ago. That being said it is still very much an imposing landmark in Castle Square at the centre of Swansea. The seagulls seem to love it though giving them a panoramic view of the unsuspecting tourists gathered around the water fountain feature.
A. H.
There is good place to have a seat, good food and drink available in the gardens with a big screen nice place
d.
Stinking.
Rubbish nearly everywhere. The seagulls were ripping refuse bags open all over the place. We decided to go to Bridgend outlet instead because it was cleaner. Surely the council should do more for the local business by sorting this problem.
D. S.
A nice set of Castle ruins in the heart of Swansea city centre. There is very little of the Castle remaining so dont expect to see a huge amount and what remains could do with a clean up but certainly worth a look if you are in the city centre.
S. M.
The castle is right in town - great atmosphere and blending of old and new. Not much to see, but there are some nice architectural pieces remaining and pretty windows.
R.
Very nice castle. Little boring as there are no activities to do around it but very beautiful scenic place.
T. B.
Nice little castle in the centre of town. Nice for a little bit of relaxation before heading into the city.
D. S.
Swansea...a way more relaxing small sea side city compared to other places...nice place to be, in an afternoon with the family. Castle and the surrounding area is meticulously maintained. Eye-catching senories all around. Wonderful experience. Would deffly visit again.
L. K.
Remarkable place to visit, however we found that there was very little information regarding the castle's history, which I found a bit disappointing. But the kids had fun running around it...
G. S.
Pretty cool to have a castle in the middle of the city, careful venturing too far within the walls as you may bump into some vagrants, watch yourself.
A. D.
Very impressive!
C. B.
Nice place to chill during a good day. Be nice if the building was opened for use on a small basis like, being sheltered but still being outside so I could chill out there even on a bad weathered day. :)
A. W.
Lots of history behind this historic place but unfortunately most was destroyed by the Germans during a 3 night blitz in WW2. Although not much left it still remains a landmark and focal point of the City Centre.
H. B. (. K.
Lovely place to spend time with your family!
B. A.
The remains of what used to be a castle, it’s small but still worth checking out!
m. p.
Not a lot left of this town defence wall. Ut still interesting
A. R.
Ancient fortified castellated but alas requiring maintenance and could be opened to include historical and archaeology exhibition in the vaults beneath.
L. C.
T
Surprised at its location in the middle of the town, took a brief look as we were walking through. Amazing as so much of the castle wall ruins are still on view.
C. H.
You can come and sit outside what little is left of the castle, but so far as I know you can’t access it in any way. The bit remaining is in pretty good nick and close to full height throughout. Which is rare on more complete Welsh castles than this one, where locals tended to cannibalise the stonework for other purposes. This makes me wonder how the rest of it fared so poorly. Handed to Henry de Beaumont in around 1107, it survived a siege later in the century.
So if I had to guess, either the Luftwaffe, or a 20th century councillor did for the rest of the place.
D. S.
Swansea Castle, history right in the middle of town ,well worth a visit. We found out more about the castle while doing a Swansea Treasure Trail.
R. g.
Wonderful ruins of a 12 and 13th century castle. About 400 years old. Some of the castle is still maintained well. Worth a visit....!
R. F.
Lovely castle.
T. R.
Unlike other castles in this part of Wales this isn't the type that charges you to enter. This is probably because it doesn't actually have four walls and so might be a bit unfair to expect you to pay to walk among the crumbling walls.
All in all it is not the grandest castle in the wall but it does add some character to the otherwise dire walkway from the town centre to Parc Tawe. On the weekends you will sometimes see people drinking flagons of cider so there's always that if you fancy a bit of culture.
M. C.
Definitely worth a visit
P. C.
Plenty of room to sit and talk/eat. No cover from rain but features a big screen that plays BBC news and updates on events
G. d. a.
Right in the heart of Swansea, it seems the oldest building left in this town, looking at the ruins you can imagine its massive original dimensions. Interesting the contrast with that awful Bt tower behind.
A. D.
A "nothing to see here" type experience. Just an old relic sitting in the middle of the high street without much fanfare
M. W.
Sort of landmark with long and interesting history but very derelict and looks simply poor. Pity, coz other way could be a good concert and other events place to make it
A. A. (.
Excellent example of a castle that's a shell of its former glory, having survived civil war, uprising and even German bombers. No access, but good views of the externals.
J. B.
Nice place to stop and have a sandwich lovely relaxing with the sound of the water
O. A.
I don't know what they do there
A. R.
Interesting to show you what not to do with an ancient monument. Hopefully they are going to renew some of the landscape and replace the sun bleached signs
S. T. P.
Swansea castle was founded by Henry de Beaumont in 1107 although Swansea castle is ruined and not maintained properly.
B. U.
Historical moment in Swansea, City Centre. Great sight to behold .
S. J.
Just the ruins of the old castle with an information board. Worth a 5 minute stop as you pass by.
N. C.
Interesting monument free to look at
S. T. W.
A medieval frontier town, Swansea is where the amazing journey of the Hanged Man in the St Thomas Way Story begins.
The natural landscape of Swansea was very different in medieval times. Perhaps most strikingly, the River Tawe flowed along a different course, further west than today, along the land directly below the castle. The street below the castle, still called ‘The Strand’, really was a shoreline in the Middle Ages.
In medieval times, Swansea was the Wild West of Anglo-Norman rule in Wales; part of an area known as the March of Wales or Welsh Marches (‘borders’), which stretched all the way into Pembrokeshire. Swansea was the main town of the Marcher Lordship of Gower, held by the de Briouze family for much of the Middle Ages.
The power of the de Briouze family – Norman colonial rulers in this Welsh landscape – is still visible in Swansea today, even though much of the medieval town is now lost. The castle ruins in the city centre are actually those of the ‘New Castle’, begun under the lordship of William de Briouze II around 1284-90, to replace the earlier Norman motte and bailey castle founded c.1106 (read more on St Thomas Way site).
D. o.
Beautiful structure. It was like I was back in time!!!
B. L.
Town center has loads of pubs
K. J.
Beautiful castle
K. B.
Not really much to see, all you can do I walk around what's left of the outside but still an impressive piece of engineering.
L. A.
Great little ruin of a castle, nestled within the grim brutalist of 60s architecture. Part was knocked down for office space.
I. T.
Not much to see these days and there's no entry to the castle, Oystermouth castle in Mumbles is worth a visit though
S. H.
I was waiting across the road for a bus. I've lived in Swansea all my life and only ever sat outside there sorry
S. J.
Little bit of Swansea history, shame the lack of investment in it has resulted in not much being preserved, it was used as the evening post building many years ago, plenty of photos on Google showing how impressive it used to be.
S. B.
Beautiful Welsh historical building.
R. G.
Amazing that this survived the war as the area around was bombed so heavily, a very important part of the city centre and the history of Swansea.
D. P.
Amazing castle in the centre of Swansea. In my opinion, it's a must-see attraction!
x.
Nice historic scenery, surrounded by modern environment. Keeps an old atmosphere to the city.👍
B. W.
Old place and still awesome.
Played there when I was a kid awesome.
T.
Some nice old bits if castle with some limited history to read.
M. D.
More could be made of the castle ruins. And the water feature in Castle Gardens needs some love.
M. H.
Despite not being able to get inside the castle there are some lovely views to be seen.
J. S.
Because its part of our history of our very lovely city, witch I love very much and it can't be taken away from me.

(Translated) Unfortunately, not much has been preserved of the castle. The well-preserved part of the outer facade is not clearly visible, since there are very close neighboring buildings. Since you can't go inside, you can see everything in 15 minutes. Overall, it's nice to see, but nothing special.

(Translated) Very interesting constellation! Old and historic castle or ruin integrated in the middle of the city. This gives an art historical picture. Definitely worth seeing!
(Original)
Sehr interessante Konstellation! Alte und historische Burg bzw. Ruine mitten in die City integriert. Das gibt ein kunsthistorische Bild. Sehr sehenswert!

(Translated) Cool place to spend a few moments. It is not only the ruins of the castle, but also a good view of the bay.
