Reviews of STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway

Took my young daughter and we had an excellent day out. The staff were incredibly helpful and super friendly too. We done the additional activity of semaphore, codes etc. Great little cafe too. All facilities were clean, especially the toilets.
Take some change there are some old style amusement arcade machines in the STEAM.
Would highly recommend a visit, learnt loads going there with my daughter and a fun day out.
Plus a great little gift shop in the reception area.

One of the best Railway Museums Iv been to. What sets it apart is how family-friendly it is. Loads of opportunities for children to actually experience what it was like to operate trains during this time.
The exhibition and displays are also fascinating and the informative videos they have are really good.
They are also very COVID-friendly and the toilets are super clean.

Interactive and informative Steam museum. Learn all about the history of the Swindon Rail Works in a beautiful building. Parked in Swindon Outlet North, only cost £1 but you can bring the receipt from the rail museum to the info desk and they will give you a free parking pass! Only a 5 minute walk.
There was a lot to see and do and if you love trains as much as my partner there are some great Steam trains housed here for you to see. Lots for the kids too, little puzzles and games throughout. Very enjoyable afternoon.

Excellent museum covering the first days of the Great Western Railway through to current times. It of course features the history of the Swindon Railway Works - which was one of the World's greatest centres of railway locomotive production. With many photos, information boards, artifacts, videos and historic locomotives. Superbly presented. A must see for anyone interested in the story of our railways.
There's also a parking refund for museum visitors. And if you prefer to travel by train, it's only a short walk from the station.

Very interesting museum. I thought it was a bit pricey as it's not a large museum, however I suppose the upkeep is quite high. However we did enjoy the walk around and as I am old enough to remember the steam engines and some of the place names they had up, it was a bit nostalgic.

Great museum, only needs about an hour and a half to visit at most. Cafe not open but the shopping centre has plenty of places to eat. Car park nearby. Still needs prebooking which is a bit annoying as can't decide to go at last minute, especially since it isn't actually that busy . Covid rules are over so really they should just discord the prebooking slots.

This was another attraction that I didn't realise that I would enjoy so much. The scale of the trains and exhibits could only be appreciated close up and you get real close at this museum, you even get to walk under one of these magnificent trains.

Easy to book. Friendly and helpful staff.
Great exhibits, the interactive ones all worked and were most popular with the 11 year old.

Attended the comic convention at the steam museum and I have to admit it was a weird experience compared to other conventions if been to, it was sat alongside the railway museum so it was a little tight and unclear what was really going on, there also was not much direction so you had to wander and hope to find all the various parts of the convention yourself some area poorly lit so you weren't sure if you were even supposed to be in there.
The convention itself was to my mind rather weak offering more of a pay to come shop here than a real convention, no speaker, no real shows or anything beyond a costume competition which was not till the afternoon and due to being packed in there was little space for those in costume to move around and no real area to change or rest if you did go from the opening at 10am and wait 5 hours to take part or watch.
There was a offering from safvr to try their vr kit and the local makers showing off their space, beyond that it was all stalls to buy from a couple of old TV personalities selling autographs and chatting with the fans if they queued up for the chance.
There were some nice props so I'll add my pictures of them and that about it.

Covid restrictions not withstanding, the museum is clean and well presented. The engines on display are all accessible, and you can get up close, which is unusual for many of this type of museum. My inner seven year old self could easily spend all day looking around everything on display, but sadly, my other half doesn’t share my interest in steam engineering and it’s end product.
