Reviews of The Lightbox
K. B.
This is a nice local museum, which is free to enter but with charges for some exhibitions. It is on the end of Woking but is close to the theatre and river
L. C.
Great to have this as a free activity to do, especially during school holidays-the local history part is really informative, and changing exhibitions (some you do pay for) stops it from becoming boring. My son, when in primary school, also had visits to take part in art activities, which is great for the local community. Nice little shop and café, exceptionally clean everywhere and staff very helpful.
G. J.
Lovely gallery with gift shop and cafe. Excellent welcoming staff. High quality exhibitions, not far from town centre and transport.
J. C.
Good local art gallery that has a good program of exhibitions. It is a bit small but, It has a interesting display of the history of Woking going back to medieval times. Nice cafe on the ground floor. Service is friendly and fast. Food is tasty and we'll cooked.

Light box is located in Woking bear victoria theatre. This place has lot to offer, it has a cafe, education section, museum of public files etc.
D. T.
1st visit. Wonderful welcome at door and so decided to join. Food excellent. Scottish painters exhibition curated well with such interesting descriptions and background. Will return soon
J. K.
Charming museum and galleries. Includes a history of Woking, local art, and special events. I love the place. Ps coffee shop and food is good.
Why not sit in the courtyard and have a coffee 2 minutes from the hussle of Woking Town centre and contemplate the canal wildlife and traffic!
F. T. E.
We didn't go to the art exhibits as entry was £7,50 and my children was happy exploring the free story museum with interactive buttons and displays. We wanted to learn about Woking and the story museum was very interesting. There is a cafe and lift so you can take the stroller.
m. w.
Just dropped by to drop off some books (The LightBox are upcycling second hand books at the moment) and stopped in the cafe for a hot chocolate. Excellent.
Parking limited on site but there is a pay car park about 200m away.
R. B.
My first visit but not the last. A lovely variety of exhibitions including the Scottish Colourists. Go....you wont regret it.
J. B.
I enjoy the art work on display, currently there are some paintings of Basingstoke canal.
Not so keen on the toilets, ladies or gents much preferred. Also difficult with a pushchair and several children in tow.
Cafe is very nice.
E. H.
Great place for a coffee. It's not too busy. Teapot was only half full but otherwise really nice. Staff were super friendly and lovely. There was always a smile on their face.
Toilets available in the gallery which were clean and nice.
M. S.
Interesting exhibition space with cafe and on the Basingstoke canal where you can enjoy a walk.
R. B.
I've visited here on many occasions over a number of years, always good.
Well worth a visit.
T. B.
Great museum telling the history of Woking and a very nice café on the ground floor
D. J.
I love this place. I learn a lot about art in general and Woking in particular.
C. D.
We went to see the Bridget Riley expo.
We thought it was very well lit and laid out
The whole building is well laid out and easy to park .
There is a nice little cafe area.
Y. S.
Superb Surrey museum, beautiful exhibitions, regular workshops, great engagement with local communities.
Definitely worth visiting Woking just for The Lightbox
E. C.
Amazing place,really interesting!nice shop and coffee,good food
R. B.
We went on Sunday 28 th to the Craft Fair
it was very good.
Disappointed with the cafe , ie the service
was extremely slow. It's been sometime since we've been but we thought the seating in the cafe would be more in keeping with a child's play school.
S. A.
I work here and the environment is friendly. Great place to be.
D. H.
Honestly had such a good time here! Loved dressing up in the Tudor clothes - wish I could keep them!
The art work by the students from the college was very impressive!
Definitely want to go again
R. S.
Brilliant gallery. Please visit and donate. At least have one of the best coffee's in Woking. The cafe is very very good
J. B.
Interestingly different gallery with good small exhibitions
A. W.
Great range of permanent and visiting exhibitions covering the arts and history. Really pleasant cafe on ground floor, accessible to all and child friendly, with indoor and outdoor seating. Great range of food and drinks from cakes and snacks to full blown meals using seasonal produce too.
L. G.
Nice cafe staff. Feel safe here. Go there with MIND charity but no safe fruit nooo baby noo!! Lol. Can't always dance with nada fruit..xx
C. C.
I had my 40th birthday party there on the weekend and can highly recommend The Lightbox as a venue. Jake, their Venue and Events Officer, went out of his way to ensure everything went smoothly and we all had a great time. The space was perfect (we had about 60 people), with a bar, easy access toilets and plenty of space. The staff were on site to help with the catering and serving of drinks at the bar. They all did a really fantastic job. It was great to have a party at a venue that was a bit different. Highly recommend!
M. W.
I really like the astetic of this building, the outside lives up to its name and the interior has elements of wood work that are comparable to the design museum in London. One the best burgers in the area from the cafe and I had a good time at the comedy night. 10 out of 10 would go again
a. d.
Brilliant exhibition of Bridget Riley's work. Very inspiring and beautifully displayed.
R. T.
Bright and airy arts center with an engaging approach. Contemporary and classical paintings are well displayed and placed, where possible, into a local context, making content also accessible to younger visitors. The Turner and Picasso exhibitions were particularly successful in this respect. Also enjoyed the smaller Marcel Ronay exhibition, again featuring an artist with a local interest.
Staff at the café/restaurant were attentive and caring. Good selection of hot and cold dishes available.
Signed up on my first visit to an annual membership which provides further offers and discounts throughout the year. Looking forward to my next visit.

The light box museum is easy to teach from the town centre. There is a carpark just next door, and a cafe on the ground floor. The Woking exhibition is well done and interesting. The exhibitions change on a regular basis. There are toilets on all 3 floors, and a huge lift.
J. R.
Very interesting but reasonably priced gallery. I went to see the Scottish colourists exhibition but particularly enjoyed the exhibition about the history of Woking. Since I am dog daft, the section on the Railway Dogs was fascinating.
R. C.
I like the work of Bridget Riley and I enjoyed visiting the lightbox to see a selection. Even a comment about "art by protractor and set square" made me laugh in all it's wrongness.
A. S.
Small, compared to what I've been used to but good exhibitions and welcoming staff. The Scottish Colourists was being featured when we were there along with the history of the town. We'll go again.

The Lightbox is an iconic landmark located few minutes walk from Woking Town Centre. It has large spaces inside the museum exhibitions which are actually open to hire out privately. Perfect for corporate and private events surrounded by art and Popup exhibitions. Perfect space for all types of activities and even a small local cafe serving great little delicacies for all.
Looking forward to shoot here soon
N. W.
This gallery has small but beautifully curated exhibitions.
Since discovering it we've seen Turner, Cyril Mann, the Scottish Colourists and Hockney. Unlike many bigger galleries it isn't a scrum to get close to the exhibits.
The local history section, and the cafe, are great too.
Can't believe people complain about the parking. If you're not on Southwestern, I suggest you park somewhere else and take the train to Woking. There's public art in the town (including a War of the Worlds' tripod) on the way from station to the Lightbox.
You can enjoy a stroll along the Basingstoke Canal to either Brookwood or West Byfleet station for your return trip to wherever you parked.
S. R.
A light and modern museum situated between the Basingstoke canal and the town shopping centre.
There is a pleasant garden, with seating in the summer, leading to the entrance. At the entrance is a reasonably priced café and small shop with tastful gifts.
There are three floors with both permanent and changing exhibits.
Large enough to be interesting but small enough not to be exhausting.
Worth revisiting regularly to see what is new and perhaps refresh with a coffee.
A. B.
Not much there but there's a couple of interesting exhibits. The WW1 exhibit, although small is worth a look-see as the letters and eye witness accounts are scarily fascinating, and in many cases, heartrending. The current Impressionist exhibit is a bit dull ... the writeups of the paintings are a bit odd as well. Still, it's £7.50 for an annual pass so I think it worth a visit as there's usually a few good exhibits through the year.
W. E.
A terrific gallery and museum that's good for an afternoon or morning. We recently saw a temporary Van Gogh exhibition there. The membership is affordable and gets you in all year. The cafe/resto has a good variety of eats that are good value. There is plenty of multistorey parking across the road, and it's just a few minutes walk from Woking town centre.
M. S.
They have art exhibitions by famous artist such as Turner that you might only see in London. It is a little known jewel for the people of Woking and Surrey. Just have a look at their Web site and be amazed.
B. M.
Excellent gallery with friendly stmodphere
B. S.
Very nice art gallery/museum for those arty people out there or for those just simply walking by just to look in and have a brows. It also has a cafe of which serves food so if yr feeling a peckish or just want a quick bite on the go then you'll enjoy what's on offer.
G. C.
Great museum and art gallery. Displays change on a regular basis, so always something different to see. Small cafe offering quality food. Good place to spend half a day.
D. C.
The Seasons Café & Kitchen is a hidden gem in Woking. It is, in my humble opinion, the best lunch spot in Woking. The food is of excellent quality, super value for money, with great examples of British cuisine. They recently revamped their specials to bring in more summery flavours. You have to check it out.
M. N.
Went to see The Scottish Colourists exhibition. Excellent. Lovely welcoming staff and invigilators. A fantastic space for art. Look forward to next visit.
M. B.
Nice building, interesting exhibition (Scottish Colourists) but small. Why 3 stars? Parking. There isn't any in Woking at the moment. Look at the Surrey Council website where they have live updates. We went on Wednesday morning outside the holidays and we were very lucky to find a space having tried 3 carparks. I asked the staff about parking and they just yes the carparks are always full! So we won't be going again until the Council puts some of the parking back!!!
R. G.
The Lightbox is a wonderful modern gallery in the centre of Woking which does regularly changing exhibitions of art and sculpture in relatively small and digestible areas. On this occasion we went to see Michel Ronay's lovely landscapes and figures from between the wars. The Seasons Café there also offers for lunch a wide variety of snacks and hot dishes that are very well done.
D. D.
This local art gallery features a free section, but for a flat rate of £7.50 a year (with concessions), it is possible to see all the other exhibitions. These are small compared to London galleries, but are well curated and often provide insights into the local area. Recent exhibitions have included Turner in Surrey, with 16 large scale works from the Tate (they usually lend a maximum of 10).
A local history gallery features 'The Mad, the Bad and the Dead, with details of Woking's connections to railways, cemeteries, asylum. Other businesses, such as Kenwood mixers, have also been featured.
The cafe is always pleasant and a good place for a light lunch. The galleries now open late on
Thursday providing easier access and are often accompanied by events, lectures and music.
D. R.
Its very clean but i think it could do with clear signs
S. C.
Attractive building, good location between Woking town centre and canal, pleasant and helpful staff. The temporary exhibitions are on a sensible scale, you can look at everything without feeling overwhelmed.
a. h.
Great exhibition space. Enjoyed the Bridget Riley exhibition.
J. L.
Great venue in the centre of Woking. Interesting local history alongside international art exhibitions. Very good café too.
T. S.
Very good guided tour of the Turner exhibition. Interesting artworks in the other galleries. Very tasty and efficiently served food in the cafe.
B. D.
Hosts a range of touring exhibitions. The current one is Scottish painters. The associated café is light and airy and the food is quite good too
A. D.
Fantastic carrot cake! A good spot for cyclists to stop as the outside seating is enclosed. The cafe well worth a visit
D. K.
Always something interesting at this lovely little gallery, worth checking what's on before you go (last time we were a little surprised to find the cafe full with a poetry event going on)
M. O.
A very useful facility for Woking to experience culture and education.
G. C.
Great building. Deserves better content, sounds a bit rude but it seems like a local art class exhibition. What do I know though.
J. P.
Light and bright; knowledgeable and enthusistic assistants; interesting exhibitions; great cafe and great little shop. Only £7.50 annual season ticket.
Z. L.
So lucky to have this place on our doorstep. The picasso exhibition was amazing. Also love the cafe.
N. S.
Lucky enough to be able to attend drawing for adults, a revelationary art experience, enjoying studying other artists works. Currently Scottish colourists.
A. M. S.
Wonderful exhibition of brilliant but disturbing figures at the moment Sept. 2017. Decent coffee/ food. Good parking adjacent.
J. A.
Fairly small art gallery not far from Woking train station. Worth a visit if you're close by.
J. W.
Great space and genuinely worth a visit. The coffee shop / cafe is really nice and the food is surprisingly good quality and value.
R. V.
Great to have an arts centre in Woking. It's small but has a café and 3 floors. We saw hockney.
A. K.
Pleasant place but much smaller inside than it looks.
D. B.
So much going on around here, found out Horsel Common is a real place! Nice coffee shop plenty of seats outside too to enjoy a sunny day.
S. K.
it was on our way and being curious we went to lightbox. found it good, but not being a art lover, found it boring. but for art loving people, it is a real treat. i loved some sections.
J. M.
The overall Ingram Collection is vast and they have many modern British pieces here. I wish it was in central London, I'd go more often.
A. A.
