Reviews of National Trust - Greyfriars House and Garden
N. C.
We did the guided tour and lady guide was really amazing, explaining all in details with nice little stores and lot.
It’s really with visiting, also the city is nice.
L. C.
Had an excellent guided tour of this very interesting building. Quite small but beautifully presented. Cafe was also very good too.
C. P.
Small and pretty building, you can visit coffee shop and gardens free of charge.
A. F.
Guided tour was fantastic our guide was very knowledgeable and knew his stuff. The story of the house its ups and downs the families within was better than a soap opera. I loved my time here. Nice cafe too although didnt partake in any fare. Would definitely recommend
M. S.
A lovely house and urban garden. Visit is entirely by timed guided tour with a v knowledgeable guide. Tickets from National Trust shop facing.
G. M.
An absolutely cracking visit if you can get on one of the daily tours of the house. Our guide was a mine of information and anecdotes and you truly get a deep dive into the history of an ancient town house.
J. L.
Have not visited the house as we had the dog with us. The café is very nice (good outside seating if you have a four legged friend), Drinks and cake are smashing!
M. K.
Lovely Tudor built house. We did the tour which lasted 1hr. Very informative. Made a lovely change to be able to wander round with no restrictions. The guide knew his history even if he did get lost a couple of times. Worth a visit.
D. K.
We took the opportunity of booking in advance a tour of this wonderful property. The tour was conducted by the marvellous Clare who enthralled us with the history of a most unusual house which has certainly witnessed some momentous events over the last 500 plus years. We enjoyed the tour but was well aware that a tour of the house is not suitable for those who are not able to negotiate steep steps to the first floor.
T. D.
We sat in the garden and soup and coffee for lunch.
We joined the tour which was given by one of the volunteers, very interesting.
Toilets are outside. I didn't see any disabled toilets.
The gardens are very peaceful no dogs allowed on the grass.
Not for small children and no wheelchair accessibility as the main rooms are upstairs.
D. B.
Turned up 'on speck' but tour was full, so booked for next one & enjoyed pleasant lunch in their cafe. An excellent tour of Grayfriers, our guide was very informative & obviously loved the place. Lovely wee garden enhanced by mom duck with 6 ducklings!
J. H.
A fifteenth century merchants house in the centre of Worcester, not very far from the cathedral. The name is something of a misnomer as it was never connected to the neighbouring friary but it has a very interesting history which you can hear on the the guided tour - which lasts about an hour. The stairs may make the tour inaccessible to some - but there is a courtyard cafe if you just want to get a flavour of the place.
D. T.
Enjoyed Tea and Cake in the garden. 6 ducklings pottering around. Quiet haven in busy historical area. Hope the young seagull takes flight soon!!! Did not tour the house but will definitely return.
C. S.
What a lovely zone of tranquility in a busy city street! The garden is small but so peaceful. The house, again quite small is well worth a visit. Note that the shop and reception are over the street.
K. P.
Hidden gem in middle of Worcester. Tour was already booked so staff organised a volunteer Charlie to take us around. Really interesting and great depth of knowledge. Coffee shop is worth a visit.
J. M.
I attended 'Greyfriars' in Worcester with a friend to watch an outdoor play, which was put on by Dot-Productions. We thoroughly enjoyed the event with Greyfriars providing a perfect backdrop for George Bernard Shaws 'Pygmalion. It was a lovely evening and the five actors put on a very good show. Brilliant 🙂
J. C.
Loved it, the upstairs rooms are only accessed during a tour which lasts over an hour. Because my 8year old grandson was desperate to see upstairs, a very kind volunteer took us for a shortened tour on our own, so he wouldn't get bored.
We played outdoor dominos and noughts &crosses in the garden.
T. P.
Really good. Our guide was exceptional. You could tell he was enjoying giving us all his information. So much so I nearly ran out of parking time.
P. W.
Had lunch in garden from cafe. Lovely home made soup with granary bread. Then took one hour guided tour. Nigel was out tour guide and was very interesting. The building was very interesting and full of artefacts.
K. T.
You can only see the house by guided tour. Our guide Joe, was engaging and fun. Definitely more entertaining than your usual NT guide :)
H. R.
An amazing building, considering it was once scheduled for demolition! Excellent early examples of re-cycling and re-purposing! Fascinating history! Excellent NT guide.
K. M.
Joe led our tour and brought both the house and the area to life. His enthusiasm and knowledge around the subject was tremendous and his description of the house and its residents were incredibly vivid.
C. B.
A unique and interesting house with real history. The guide was profesional and interesting providing factual history of life within the house and area. The guide was special being a professional restorer and historian.
C. P.
This is another gem from the National Trust.
It is in the heart of Worcester City Centre and gives an insight into how a tradesman may well well have lived hundreds of years ago.
The tour was informative and interesting. It is well worth signing up for. The wealth of knowledge and understanding the people who show you around is first rate.
The gardens a very pleasant with space to have a picnic and plants to enjoy.
The tea rooms are well run and offer the drinks and cakes that many enjoy.
The toilets are spotless.
It is well worth a visit.
C. G.
Interesting guided tour and Tudor costume wearing actors was a nice touch (I don't think they're usually there though)
B. M.
Small house that is tucked away in the heart of the city. Great old house with lots of character but you can see this whole place in a little over an hour so don't make this a day out. The garden is lovely place to relax in on a sunny day.
P. U.
Greyfriars was lovey to visit. It's very old(around 1480s). The volunteers there are great, very good with young children. It was interesting to hear about the history and lifes of the brother and sister who saved it (Matley and Elsie). I loved the uneven floors. Don't miss the framed flock wallpaper in the hall, mr punch doorstop in the bedroom and the Georgian wallpaper in the dining room (made with arsenic for the green colour). The garden was really lovely too we had a cream tea when we visited. Would recommend a visit.
T. W.
A very interesting place to visit with a good deal of social history to learn. The staff are excellent at bringing the house to life-it is not a museum set in aspic.
G. J.
Awesome little property.
Best visited with a tour.
The room stewards know their stuff and are interesting.
Tea room is small but on a good day you can sit in the garden.
Definitely well worth a visit.
A. D.
Small museum with a great little coffee shop, perfect cheese scones and lovely staff.
C. G.
Lovely gardens with a tea rooms serving tea in China pots with some cakes and snacks.
A. 5.
The downstairs and the gardens were open to view. I found it interesting and it does not take long to have a quick look.
e. r. (.
It is a great experience in Worcester city centre with fantastic volunteers that guide you throught the house and garden, full of details and nice stories. #nationaltrust #england
J. M.
Fabulously preserved Tudor house. Guided tours which tell stories of the many families who called Greyfriars home throughout its history including siblings Elsie and Marley Moore who are responsible for much of the renovation and passing ownership to the National Trust.
B. H.
Missed seeing the whole house, which was a shame, since tours have limited numbers and finish mid-afternoon. No one's fault. Advice: Book ahead of visit.
M. P.
Small and well preserved. Lovely people giving tours. Worth drop in to have a look and a cup of tea overlooking garden. All in middle of the city.
E. M.
A real hidden gem in the centre of Worcester.
I so enjoyed the guided tour around this delightful timbered house, with a very knowledgeable guide, who bought the history of the property, and it's owners to life.
A lovely cafe serves drinks, snacks and cakes which can be enjoyed in the pretty garden or the house.
G. C.
Lovely old building, you can visit the gardens and tea rooms for free
I. J.
A lovely peaceful garden to chill in after hectic shopping, good tea room and the house is of great interest.
l. p.
Absolutely brilliant tour by Charles. Really made the history of the place come alive!
G. S.
My wife and I toured the house and grounds. While you see "black and whites" all over, you don't often get a look inside to see how it was used and evolved over time. I thought the volunteers were fantastic!
C. T. (.
A wonderful history of a building told through the history of the families that lived here and contributed to the marks left in the architecture.
G. I.
Lovely little house with an excellent tour , well worth booking it
S. A.
Amazing guided tour of this beautiful house and garden. It's not what it seems and our knowledgeable guide Joe gave a comprehensive history lesson- and shared some great stories about the people who had created the house you see today. People can access the garden and cafe without charge at the moment.
R. M.
One of a small number of black and white buildings left near to the town centre. Well worth a visit and a lovely garden at the rear of the property.
A.
Lovely white timbered Natural Trust house. Guided by beautiful people. Don’t forget exploring garden.
c. h.
Beautiful garden to sit in and have a coffee and cake. Doesn't feel like your in a city centre at all. Peace and quiet after shopping or just somewhere lovely you can let the toddler mooch about safely in while you have a tea and catch up with a mate. Delightful.
A.
Went to see Midsummer nights dream in the gardens.
Beautiful gardens, lovely building
S. g.
Small house in central worcester with a small garden. Interesting to spend 30 minutes exploring and alk the staff were very knowledgable and loved their subject. Worth a visit if you like local history or are a member of the trust. Otherwise depends how much you want to spend to look round 5 rooms and a smallish garden.
C. T.
Great place to visit. You need to go on a tour to see the house.
A. D.
A little gem in the centre of Worcester. Before the tour, had a nice cream tea in the gardens (£5.50). Steve took us on the tour and his knowledge was excellent. Tour took about 1 hour. Well worth a visit even if you're not doing the tour and just stopping for a drink, nicer surroundings to sit and relax than the usual coffee chains.
H. B.
Thank you Joe. One of the best NT tours
P. B.
Wonderful staff couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely be visiting again. 😄
p. p.
Good tea room but I was only there because of train strike and house was only closed because of strike🙄
S. B.
Very interesting .... should have visited before now.
I. C.
Just re-opened. This epitomises the determination of some people in the first half of 20th century to save old buildings. Spurred on by Country Life etc , a brother and sister have created their own take on the original , salvaging old leather hangings and fragments of paneling to reconstruct the old building as their home.
Very quirky in an endearing way and shows what individuals can achieve.
D. R.
Very nice the garden and the sandwich and coffee was lovely .
H.
Interesting house. Great finding out the history including near ruin. Beautiful sun trap of a garden
R. B.
Had a great visit our guide was very informative interesting building
M. C.
Delightful staff, peaceful gardens and Fabulous cream tea, a real hidden Gem
M. W.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Tour guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable about details of the history.
J. M. W.
Well worth seeing how we used to live....not that many years ago! Stairs to climb and floors a little wonky.....but so would we be at their age 😜
B. D.
Amazing building, looks like they just moved out💯
L. R.
Reasonable entrance fee. Beautiful building & gardens. Plenty of history.
T. P.
Really great visit. The guide was fantastic.
D. R.
Fascinating guided talks surrounding the history of not only the property but the surrounding area. Nice cake and tea stop too in the pleasant garden area
S. P.
So good to see this house saved for the nation. A very interesting history and a wonderful place to visit.
L. g.
Lovely place, friendly staff, really tasty fruit scone. Nice garden and nice Robin
J. M.
Delicious cup of hot chocolate. Incredible place. Sat in a quiet and very historic room to have our drink.
The owners very welcoming too.
r. p.
Such an interesting place! Well worth a visit if you are in Worcester. Much local history is revealed.
S. F.
Really interesting house in Worcester centre. Staff and guides really knowledgeable and welcoming. We learnt a lot about the families who lived there and how the house had been developed by them. Coffee and food very good. Lovely garden. We will go again I'm sure.
s. a.
Lovely house and gardens, a beautiful piece of history right in the middle of Worcester,
D. E.
The guided tour was really interesting and well presented and the young man thoughtfully provided my elderly husband with a chair to sit on in each room.
L. P.
Had a nice surprise to find that the cafe was open . We sat outside in the small pleasant garden . The staff and volunteers were all very friendly. We did not go in the house as we have been in there previously.
C. L.
Interesting place to visit in a lovely town centre 😁
B. L.
Very interesting and informative guided tour
S. H.
Located parallel to the main shopping street the property gives you a taste of medieval Worcester. We had a brilliant potted history from the room steward in the great hall - it's worth talking a seat for 10 minutes to hear him - it puts the whole place in perspective. Outside, the courtyard & garden is a peaceful haven to sit & enjoy a cuppa. It's small, and doesn't take long to visit, but is well worth a look. Hard to believe that it was about to be demolished!
P. J.
Beautiful house with an amazing history. The volunteers here are exceptional, even by national trust standards. They treasure every aspect of the house & are eager to pass on their knowledge to visitors. The stories they pass on about the personal belongings of the brother &sister who renovated the house bring it's history to life. This is a shining example of the wonderful work the National Trust do.
C. S.
Greyfriars is a wonderful example of Worcester history, at times a family home, two shops, business premises and more. There is a cafe, toilets, bookshop and lovely garden. Well worth a visit. It's open Tues to Friday from 11am. Tours only until 1 pm and then you can explore individually after that. The tour guides are very informative and it was great to see such an old building being looked after so well.
s. h.
Greyfriars is a timber framed house in the heart of Worcester. Via a pre booked tour you can investigate this warren of family living, crossing the centuries, or sit in the tea room or garden, and enjoy a few moments of quiet reflection (even though the garden wall backs on to the busy ring road, you would never know.) The staff are friendly and well informed on the house, if you are in the city a visit is recommended, even more so if you have time to enjoy a cream tea.
A. H.
One of the smaller NT locations, situated in the middle of Worcester Town Centre.
The staff are lovely and tell the historic tales of the building with great passion.
Outside, the garden is a wonderful example of how to tuck beauty away within city walls. They almost feel out-of-place, but in a magical way.
S. P.
Lovely little garden oasis with cafe to enjoy a quiet coffee and scone in the city centre. We didn't go inside the house.
S. T.
A very enjoyable experience and a fascinating house with lots of quirky things. The volunteers were absolutely amazing and wonderful. The highlight of the visit was the Christmas decorations which added a colourful and festive atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended.
J. S.
An oasis in the city. Recommend the tour. Don't expect to be there all day but well worth popping in if near by. Nice small garden. Tea room does cream tea but not sandwiches or meals. Small second hand bookshop.
A. B.
Small Tudor House. Beautiful garden. Very knowledgeable staff on entry but the other volunteers knew very little. It was near closing time so that might explain it. Worth seeing if you are a member.
S. D.
We had a 49 minute tour from a very informative guide who gave us a greater understanding of the history of the house. Tea, coffee and cake was enjoyed in the sunshine in the delightful garden. The special exhibition about Miss Martley Moore was very interesting.
s. c.
Karen was an excellent tour guide.
S. F.
Tea room and garden only available but we treated ourselves to a "cream tea" and it was a treat! Friendly staff. Very pleasant garden to walk through
W. M.
Very interesting talk and guided tour
M. S.
Beautiful little tearoom & garden in the heart of a city including a lovely young gentleman with lots of information to impart. Delightful!
D. H.
Bit disappointing.
No parking but that was not a problem .
Very old Tudor house with a fairly interesting past rescued due to a brother and sister 's efforts prior to National Trust involvement . Not a property o would bother to go back to see again .
s. d.
Nice place to spend an hour or so with a very nice house indoors and out and with a lovely quaint little garden .
Staff are very friendly and informative and go out of their way to help you with any questions you may ask .
Definitely worth popping in if your visiting Worcester.
T. H.
House wasn't open unfortunately, but the gardens are an absolute delight. Lovely tea and sandwiches too.
J. B.
Very interesting place .. Great tour...
P. L.
A real treasure right in the heart of the City. Deceptive from the outside, the place is TARDIS like on the inside with a fascinating history and untold secrets yet to be shared ( ask the guides ). Pleasant small walled garden and great cream teas and cakes. Seating when weather is inclement limited though.
N. G.
Great guide, full of historical facts
J. M.
Very nice homemade cakes and very nice
tea and coffee in a very pleasant garden. Well done to the staff.
T. S.
Very helpful staff provide details about the fascinating history of the house. You can just imagine how it would have been to have lived here. Highly recommended.
T. F.
Greyfriar's Court is in the main town centre, Worcestor. It is along an old street and you walk in to find a small shop, with the house and a beautiful garden. The garden is not too large but is lovely with a little courtyard and tearoom.
The house is tudor with elements from other times. There is an interesting door stop collection handpainted by a former owner of the house.
There is a trail for children, and it is a nice place to pop in and visit.
A. P.
Wonderful place, mix of medieval stuff and memories of the mid-twentieth century. Lovely (quite small) garden, too, and a second hand book shop for good measure.
D. P.
Very interesting and nice helpful staff

A lovely little place in the city centre, the garden was a sanctuary in the middle of an urban metropolis. It was a shame we didn't have longer to look around as it closed quite early.

L. B.
Greyfriars, Worcester is a Grade I listed building in Worcester, England. Its location near to a former friary of the Franciscan order of Greyfriars has in the past led to speculation that it was constructed as their guest house, but it is now believed to have been built as a house and brew-house c.1485 for Thomas Grene, brewer and High Bailiff of Worcester from 1493-1497.[1][2][3] It has been in the ownership of the National Trust since 1966.[4]

Did the 11am guided. The lady who showed us around was excellent. Great information clearly delivered. One of the best NT guides we have had - and we've been members for a good number of years. Lovely little cafe with friendly, helpful staff.

(Translated) Curious house in the center of Worcester very well preserved. It has a spectacular library and, as always in buildings maintained by the National Trust, the people who volunteer go out of their way to help and tell little stories and anecdotes about the house. All of them are dressed in period, which makes you feel a little more part of history. It has a garden with games for the little ones.
