Reviews of Chirk Aqueduct
A. P.
A lovely little walk and view at the end. A car would take you most of the way following the canal to the aqueduct, but I think it's mostly for locals to go down. There's a small parking lot that you should park at instead and just take the pleasant 5-10 minute stroll. 20 minutes is really all you need for the walk and to take in the sights.
D. M.
Great place to stretch you legs. Fun tunnel alongside the canal to wander through, though it's very dark! The views are breathtaking, and there's lots of information about local history about the place.
A. W.
Stunning architecture and a beautiful setting, if a little awkward to find by car. The walk across is amazing, but not for those afraid of heights...!
J.
A fantastic feat of engineering taking the canal across the border between England and Wales and over a river in a deep valley at the same time. For the shortest, but steep, walk to see the aqueduct, park at the information centre/Police station (free) on the B4500 where there is also a coffee shop (Caffi Wylfa.) The geography of the location means you can look down on full grown trees and birds in flight - doesn't sound particularly special, but to be outside, rather than in a tall building, and see this view on the world always captivates me. The views of the surrounding countryside are lovely and it is incongruous that the canal should run across the aqueduct high above the valley floor to disappear into a tunnel. Worth a brief stop off when travelling along the A5 near Chirk or as part of a longer walk by the Llangollen Canal.
G.
Children did enjoy the long and dark tun el at the end of the aqueduct.
Also there is a nic castle nearby so You can combine both of these together.
P.
Lovely place. Gorgeous views and walking through the longest, darkest canal tunnel is a must. Just wish I had more time to stay longer as the canal walk was lovely too.
E.
There is a small car park just over the bridge on Weston Rhyn. Then you can walk along the tow path by the side of the canal to Chirk Aqueduct. It is a beautiful walk. There are ducks and geese though the geese can be a little unfriendly. Then once you get to the Aqueduct the views are stunning. There is also Café Wylfa near by for a good cuppa to warm you up, with cakes and sandwiches etc. A lovely place to visit and well worth a stop.
C. H.
Nice spot to see the Chirk viaduct, railway bridge and canal tunnel. Bridges England and Wales. Nice views if countryside.
A. L.
Great place to visit, lovely walks. Sits right next to it's taller relative: the Viaduct.
D. D.
Beautiful structure with amazing view's. Nice area to go for long walks or shorter walks with a dog it's ideal.
J. R.
Visited Chirk aqueduct last week, its amazing really your so high up with the canal right by your side an the train line just by the side of that, you can walk across from England to Wales ,would not recommend going when it's windy ,it was built by the amazing engineer Thomas Telford.
s. n.
Wonderful place! Bit of a wimp as scared of heights and water but still walked it lol
W. d. F.
Fabulous place to visit, walked through the fields along the river and under the aqueduct; then parked at the Inn in Chirk and had a lovely lunch before walking over the aqueduct from Wales to England. Wonderful day
B. &. K. o. T.
Beautiful. Shame there was alot of weeds growing along the path. Worth a walk as long as you dont mind hights.
S. R.
Beautiful aqeduct and viaduct, parked for free in Chirk Village and walked down public footpath to view from underneath.
b. h.
It's a high aqueduct with a good view, filtered on by an unlit canal tunnel. It costs nothing, you can watch canal boats come and go. There's nearby short term parking at the cafe Wylfa.
Only Downers is that Pontcysyllte aqueduct is nearby and has the superior height and view. Also noticed the odd leg missing on the fence in the tunnel, but it is an at your own risk kind of deal anyway
K. M.
Beautiful location, could sit for ages watching the boats go up and down. A walk through the tunnel is interesting and lovely walk along the canal
c. b.
Lovely day trip from Trevor basin (anglo Welsh boats) - great way to spend a family day out xx
P. H. H.
Beautiful impressive aquaduct on the Welsh border.lots of nearby free parking.Great walks.Huge tunnel, take a torch!
I. K.
Great to walk across. Saw several boat across as well
A. N.
This is well worth a visit, amazing views and scenery, and Telford construction is also amazing.
S. W.
Dramatic piece of classic canal engineering, enhanced by the addition of the later railway viaduct, all set in beautiful English and Welsh border countryside.
B. G.
It is beautiful, tall and a bit scary too :) The children loved it and would definitely return! Chirk tunnel is very long, and pitch black at some points, so not recommended for anyone with claustrophobia!
M. S.
This is a place to admire the excellence of Victorian and pre-Victorian engineering by William Jessop and Thomas Telford and the sheer strength and sweat put in by men from a bygone age. Access from the Chirk end is down a steep-ish slope. Here you will find you are on the canal towpath with the railway viaduct above. A good view can be had down the tunnel and if you have a torch you can walk along it to the other end hear the railway station. Go the other way across the aqueduct for fine views up and down the valley far below. You may be lucky to have a canal boat pass by. This is really worth a visit and if you have a bike you can cycle for miles from here. There is a good cafe nearby too.
M. J.
Nice interesting walk along the canal though a tunnel and over the aqueduct.
C. A.
Beautiful views and a thrill to walk over the Aqueduct.
W. K.
A Great Scenic Canal walk.
H. R.
Took a 'cruise' on a small, 8-seater canal boat from the Lion Quays Resort as far as the Chirk tunnel, going over the aqueduct alongside the larger railway viaduct. Sadly we could go no further than the tunnel as the canal was blocked by fallen branches/trees. The weather that day was rather wet!
A. W.
Fantastic aerial views as long as one is not keen on heights. Thankfully, i wasn't walking. Being on a narrowboat was relaxing even sitting in the bow!
A. O.
Excellent place for family outing.
d. b.
Wonderful british engineering the canal and train running side by side at over 70 and 90 feet from the ground
K. S.
What a great place .
Chirk Aquaduct is an amazing piece of engineering.
With easy access from the canal.
But a steep bank if you have walked through the wonderful tunnel right by the Aqueduct to get back to Castle Road.
Walked miles and enjoyed the views.
Met many push bikes and families walking along the canal.
Will definitely be returning to this area as plenty to do .
R. B.
Great walks along the Llangollen canal with two Aqueducts and two tunnels with lovely countryside just excellent. For the tunnels rember your torch.
B. C.
A beautiful area with lots to see and do. The darky tunnel is great fun
T. P.
A great example of architecture mixed with great landscape. It can get very busy with canal boats and canoes but as long as you not in rush, then you can sit back and enjoy the journey. Photo taken by Tatton Photography
b. r.
Most people have heard, visited the world famous Aqueduct (British heritage)in Trefor near Llangollen, North Wales.
Thomas Telford also build the 2 smaller sisters of the Aqueduct in Chirk.
The lower one is for the canal boats and pedestrians, the higher one is for trains, crossing the River Ceriog. You can walk, or cycle along the Llangollen canal....right through from Llangollen to Elsemere or further along outstanding landscapes and stop by on several pubs, cafes along the way.
The only challenging part is a 500 m long tunnel in Chirk. Without a torch or a headlight it might get a bit scary.
A. F. M.
Fantastic experience standing there with England to left and Wales to right. Given the opportunity I would visit again.
C. W.
A pleasant couple of hours spent walking along the Chirk Aquaduct.
Plenty of boats to watch manouvering to get through the tunnel.
Beautiful views
Parking is available at the cafe above the canal. The cafe does light snacks, drinks and ice cream.
L. S.
Fantastic breathtaking location! The views are endless - simply beautiful!
L. P.
While not as impressive as others in the area its nice to visit and continue into the tunnel. Which is quite a unique experience.
P. L.
Brilliant viaduct and right next to a viaduct so you get double the entertainment. And once you’ve walked across the aqueduct and back you can follow the canal through Chirk tunnel for 421 metres! There are probably always canal boats going through. Walk alongside one, it’ll help light your way. I got ahead of the one we started following and it got pretty dark. There is a hand rail to stop you from falling in the water. I’m guessing if you think in advance, a torch would be a good idea or the one on your phone.
R. G.
Great place for a walk or bike ride along the canal.
Or just sit by or over the tunnel, take in the view and chill out.
Then pop in to Caffi Wylfa for refreshments.
S. H.
Beautiful place to walk and admire the view. The display of flowers at the viewpoint by the road is magnificent
g. b.
Nice walk over n under the aquaduct with some good views.
J. C.
Not as famous as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Llangollen canal. It still is an impressive structure mainly because it is built entirely of local stone. Immediately afterwards is the 400 metres Chirk tunnel. The railway viaduct along side was built higher for no other reason than to show that. We are the new kids on the block.
I. J.
Brilliant engineering. A canal tunnel, aqueduct and railway viaduct surrounded by wildflowers above a picturesque valley
A. H.
Lovely place for a walk. If you are scared of heights though this place might not be for you. The views are beautiful as well as the cute canal side cottages
M. B.
Really lovely place and a nice walk
G. J.
Beautiful scenery and walks.
M. T.
Great place. Fantastic structure. Aqueduct and train above. Love to be here when barges are using the aqueduct. To walk with them through the tunnel.
R. P.
Great view, not to be missed, one of the many reasons to take a narrow boat down the Llangollen canal.
F. P.
The good thing about this is you can cross either on foot or in a narrow boat, the building work is a pleasure to look at. It also has the train lines right next to it.
G. F.
A really good aqueduct. Water, bridge, arches, water on the bridge. Ticks all the boxes.
And the Brucie bonus, it's right next to another bridge, without water, yet still with arches. So not a aqueduct, a viaduct no less. With a railway line.
Whatever, it's in a beautiful location and worth a look if you're nearby, or just have an interest in aqueducts. Especially ones next to a viaduct.
A. H.
Wonderful walk along aquaduct a marvel of engineering at Pontcysyllte and also at Chirk . Thomas Telford e are proud of you
J. C.
I had a rare Monday off work today, so Miss Dimelow and I returned to re-live a previous Monday off work, motorcycle visit here 20 years ago. Due on that occasion, to us both having massive hangovers from all day Sunday drinking in the now closed and burnt down Dymock Arms in Penley, anyway I digress somewhat. We came in from Gledrid roundabout on the Chirk road and turned left at the Bridge End pub and parked the bike in the useful little visitor car park. We next strolled along in the glorious sunshine the towpath led us into and over the marvellous and well built aqueduct. After which we walked to and through the long tunnel which is located immediately after the aqueduct. What a brilliant package of height and depth experience. The tunnel is my favourite bit of the journey as it's very dark and disorientating. I was just as impressed with the whole shebang as I was twenty years ago and it hasn't changed a bit. Last time I was here I was riding a Kawasaki GT750 and today it was a Suzuki 1200 Bandit.
Anyway give the place a visit it's great, and make sure you walk through the tunnel!
T. M.
Located just outside the main village, there is a car park & a cafe just a 2 minute walk from the aqueduct. Caffi Wylfa serves drinks, light lunches, cakes and cream teas. Very friendly staff and comfy seating inside, outside tables too, it also has free wifi!. It's a pretty walk. Interesting to see the aquaduct and viaduct so close together. If you walk along the towpath and through the tunnel you can walk to Llangollen though it is about a 2 hour walk. The nearby castle is also worth a visit if you have the time.
R. B.
Fantastic views. A great nice gentle walk with a love cafe on the corner.
R. W.
You must but marvel a this engineering marvel , even now were you can pass by the narrow boats as they pass above the valley heights
. great day as you pass with one side In England and the other in Wales . on the welsh side a almost half a km tunnel awaits you to follow a long and explore.
W. H.
Amazing double structure to admire from a distance but then realise people are boating walking and cycling over and had to try ourselves! You can even go under a tunnel along the towpath. Very exciting and assuringly secure for the faint hearted.
D. W.
Loved it great to go over you can see for miles.
O. K.
Nice little stop for a dinner break while working nearby.
N. C.
Much quieter to walk across than the Pontyclyst Aquaduct, with the added fun of walking through the Chirk canal tunnel too (~400 metres)
T. E.
Difficult to find from road signs but well worth a visit. Steep descent to the aqueduct but there is a rail. Parking & cafe close by. No tickets required
M. M.
great ro see how inventive we were back in the day, it's a very impressive site that's worth a look if you're visiting Chirk Castle or in the area
J.
Chirk aqueduct and the railway one higher up above is always a bit special on a narrowboat and even though it's not our first time crossing it, it is still a great experience every time....
P. D.
A very picturesque place and a cultural and technical heritage monument in one. If you are into such stuff just find a day to pop in and see! Good, paved access from both ends. From Welsh side (Chirk) there is a gentle slope. From English side (Chirk Bank) it is completely level and wheelchair accessible from a parking. Parking free on both sides, however spaces are limited. A walk through the tunnel is fairly easy, OK for school aged kids, but not for wheelchairs (apart from the most adventurous, perhaps); a torch is necessary. Footpath is level, not slippery, and has a railing.
Don't forget to see the nearby Chirk Castle (run by National Trust) with exquisite gardens.
i.
Lovely views. Good to be so close to the narrow boats traversing the aqueduct and got some good pictures. Nice calm location.
M. C.
Lovely place great for a nice walk to see the views the geese and the Poachers
M. W.
A very pleasant walk along the canal tow path with a chance to see ,as we did,a canal boat on the aqueduct and a train crossing the viaduct at the same time
D. S.
Such a beautiful and amazing place. A lovely walk
b. h.
This is amazing, not good to walk across if you have a fear of heights like me 🙈 but still great to see, a must visit
I. M.
Love it! Even saw some canal boats cross it, and a train.
M. T.
Stunning aqueduct and sister to the second one up the road nr Llangollen. Nice cafe nearby for a brew before walking down and checking it out.
J. C.
Free to walk over. Worth going there for the view. Free parking nearby. Not much else in Chirk
L. O. L.
Part of the wonderful Llangollen canal way. The views as you go over the aqueduct are fantastic see the river below the train track opposite! No hills to climb just stroll alongside the canal and unwind.
E. E.
Impressive structure, able to walk along the aquaduct and view the adjacent viaduct as well
M. W.
Fascinating engineering, well worth visiting
S. L.
Lovely walk from Cafe, aqueduct next to viaduct, beautiful views
D. D.
Chirk is the older and lesser known of the aqueducts in the area. It's well worth a trip.. it offers great views and facilitates a lovely elevated walk along the canal and countryside. Check out the tunnel also.
M. S.
Fantastic old bridges running side by side across the valley. Watch the canal boats take it in turns to cross the bridge while the railway crosses overhead. You can walk across if u have a head for heights, its a long way down but great to see. There's a nice cafe with parking at the Chirk end which makes a nice stop, from here u can venture into Chirk, Llangollen or further into Wales. Great drive out.
A. 7.
It's a lovely place for a walk and a pint with a pub right beside the canal
K. F.
Not quite Pontcysyllte but still impressive with some cracking views.
S. C.
Lovely walk along the canal. We'll kept area
J. R.
Nice place for a walk with great views.
S. F.
Stunning walk over the aquaduct. Lovely in the autumn sun
A. H.
As you motor over Chirk aquaduct you have a cameo shot, a framed image, of the stunning Dee Valley, through each of the viaduct arches.
Y.
Went to go and see the light on the aqueduct with our kids, beautiful to see the two bridge's lit up
I. D.
A beautiful spot with dramatic views either side of the aqueduct and a fascinating Victorian viaduct alongside, decorated with Romanesque arches.
M. F.
Not as grand as the famous Pont-cysyllte aqueduct but well worth a walk across and through the tunnel too.
R.
Nice area for a little walk!
j. p.
Chirk viaduct, worth a visit you might want a torch for tunnel
R. C.
Stunning views and countryside, albeit a little wet lol
M. M.
Amazing. Beautiful to walk and to come across on canal boat.
W. J.
The only downside is that there are not enough trains going to Chirk Station 🤔
You not only have the viaduct and the aquaduct but also the tunnel.
N. D.
Beautiful but breezy! Canal towpath is perfect for walks.
b. M.
Lovely to see such superb engineering 👍
r. c.
Amazing view, Love to go back for a long walk.
C. V.
Great aqueduct with equally good views. Just wouldn't like to be trying to go across during the summer when busy.
D. A.
Nice venue to walk along the canal path alongside the Viaduct (and through the tunnel). Very impressive views when standing on top of the Viaduct. There is also a cafe just up the road from the Viaduct (not connected to the site), which was very welcome after being a hot day - this is also where we parked our car.
M. P.
Lovely blue sky today while crossing.
C. S.
DONT LOOK DOWN!!!!!
What an achievement. Hard to comprehend.
Fascinating to behold. A great treat to walk along. Pretty scary meeting people coming the other way, and having boats pass you too. Overpriced barge offering coffees and such is a good addition. Good pub too.
I. N.
The aqueduct and tunnel make for an interesting half hour stop. The canal and tunnel are still in daily use and the parallel rail bridge is also still in daily use.
J. L.
Entertainment - watch the narrow boat canal rage between the aqueduct and the tunnel... Some were getting quite irate!
M. M.
Amazing structure with great views from it.
G. T.
Thomas Telford's stunning construction
P. W.
Had a great walk along the aquaduct and through the canal tunnel.
A. M.
I love the quality of the engineering to traverse these Valleys to provide the canal network.
F. D.
These constructions amaze me. All hand built 200 plus years ago.
J. R.
Great views. Good experience to go over on a boat!
B. P.
Great experience going over in a canal boat, the views from the top are amazing!
M. O. G.
Good views and especially fun if you walk through the tunnel next to it afterwards
A. C.
Great place to walk and enjoy the countryside.
m. t.
Beautiful walk along the Llangollen canal.
P. C.
Amazing structure, especially exciting when a train passes over as you walk along. The canal tunnel is very long and dark so take care.
R. T.
Beautiful place to stop for a picnic and observe the barges go by.
M. J.
Spectacular aquaduct and viaduct next to each other. Worth a visit if you can find where to park!!!
I. W.
Not a fan of heights so a quick walk over !
I. W.
There is nearby parking with a cafe at the Welsh end and you can walk over and under it via public footpaths. And when the boats are coming in and out the tunnel it can be entertainingly chaotic!
P. H.
Fantastic place. Well worth a visit. Proper gem of a walk down the canal and through the tunnel and over aqueduct. Cracking butchers and bakery. Lovely little pizza shop in town
k. w.
Was another nice visit and to travel over not as big as the other Aqueduct but still as nice
G. B.
Nice walk, good scenery to look at.
J. M.
Fabulous! Free parking at nearby cafe. Lovely walks. Look down on the ceriog valley from the aquaduct, look through the tunnel towards Llangollen, walk the other way to Poachers Pocket pub, or the longer circular route up to Chirk Castle.
I. F.
Nice walk up to the famous aqueduct
C. B.
Stunning walks along the canal and over the aqueduct.
A.
Fairly small and quaint, lovely little aquaduct with neighbouring viaduct. 10 minute stroll across and down the canal path. Could obviously go a lot further if you want to continue along the canal. Just hold onto your pets and children to avoid them going for a canal bath.
S. N.
A lovely place to explore lovely canal walk and beautiful countryside.
S. W.
Lovely views and plenty of nice walks in the area
E. T.
Good paths for walking across the Aqueduct very accessible if using a wheelchair
S. M.
Great place to visit, Thomas Telford's auquaduct
t. i.
Lovely walk along the canal.
C. C.
Right, if you're trying to get over the thing in a canal boat, chose a time early in the morning or early evening to get over it or I promise you, you will have to wait!
However, we got over it absolutely fine, no waiting. Lovely views, makes a few nice photos! We did pick up a dead rabbit floating on the aqueduct, which got stuck on our boat for a subsequent three miles, but that has nothing to do with the aqueduct itself!
Highly recommend.
G. M.
Amazing historic piece of engineering, managed to get across the canal path on a mobility scooter, tight in places when meeting other pedestrians, but definitely doable with care.
EXCELLENT view from the aqueduct towpath
Managed to get through the tunnel at Chirk end of the aqueduct, advisable to have light on scooter, torch or minimum mobile phone torch, as tunnel is pretty much pitch black in the middle, only lights are on the occasional canal barge going by.
Steep hill to negotiate to access cafe and toilets, but well worth the effort, cafe very popular
J. S.
Nice walk across the aquaduct, amazing to see the aquaduct & viaduct together. Handy cafe nearby too for cake!
D. R.
Great place, if your in the area, I would go !!
I. W.
Nice walk from Wales to England and back again. Some lovely views from the aqua duct and gives good photo opportunities
J. B.
Amazing views, stunning location
P. S.
A must do for the stunning views
P. (.
Chirk Aqueduct and viaduct are place in parallel across a valley and stream. And the walk across the Aqueduct gives unique angles and incite into this amazing feat of engineering forming part of industrial revolution. Well worth a visit
J. H.
Beautiful place for a walk. You can walk right along the top of the aqueduct and there's a 1km long canal tunnel nearby
S. M.
Beautiful view of stunning scenery
D.
Well worth a visit ...
Chirk is a lovely little town...
G. W.
Not alot there but impressive old structures, worth a wall over if in the aera 👍🏻
S. O.
Chirk was a delight to visit. Fabulous village.
P. S.
Passed over on the canal boat.. a beautiful spot in the world
D. P.
Well worth a visit
P. H.
This is a wonderful place for an afternoon walk. You can walk along the aqueduct, under the tunnel to the end and the walk back through the tunnel to the other end. Interestingly, part of the aqueduct lies in a no man's land between England and Wales.
The views are astounding and there are a few established walks across the countryside that are worth visiting if only for the stunning scenery.
M. M.
Great historical value and Chirk Castle over 700 yrs of history. 3p
D. C.
Lovely place on a sunny day
K. T.
Gorgeous place kids loved it
R. L.
Beautiful place to walk in peace.
S. M.
Amazing place, gorgeous views. Especially cool while it's lit up.
S. E.
Beautiful setting, guard rail ok for young children. Local community cafe 200 yards away with parking.
P. C.
Great to visit and walk across
C. S.
Beautiful scenery and views. Lovely area to walk on the canal.
A.
Great place for a nice walk. Head over the aqueduct or through the tunnel for nice leisurely paths.
S. M.
The walk along the aqueduct is beautiful, with great views over the surrounding countryside.
Going through the tunnel adjacent the aqueduct takes you into a secluded little valley and a pretty, tree-lined walk along the canal and toward Chirk Marina.
I'll be exploring this area some more, next summer.
D. K.
Wow what a great architectural achievement. Nice walk along aqueduct....England one side Wales on the other! 😃
S. M.
Ancient monument, still in use serving the purpose for which it was designed. Very interesting and different as it stands alongside a viaduct carrying the railway into and out of Wales.
c. p.
Stunning! lucky to live in this part of the world!
K. W.
Fantastic views in-between the tunnels
B. S.
Stunning nice walk along the canal. The Aqueduct is really good... you've got a viaduct for trains a viaduct for roads and a river plus a tunnel and superb views . Highly recommend the walk from the poachers pub to chirk via the cafe at the top of the road well worth the visit
L. J.
Interesting walk along this amazing structure. Nice to see the barges and the wildlife
M. S.
Always enjoy a canal walk here
m.
Fabulous place to build your vertigo legs before tackling Pontcysyllte viaduct.
P. N.
Scenic walk and the tunnel is especially interesting
S. D.
Very enjoyable for a visit, beautiful views and amazing engineering.
Take a torch with you because nearby is an incredible 421 meters long canal tunnel that is well worth going through too either by canal boat or on foot.
A. R.
Although not as impressive as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct for height and length it is better looking architecturally. Great photo opportunities are available looking through the arches of the higher rail viaduct next to the Chirk Aqueduct.
My wife found it easier to walk across than the higher aqueduct but it was a good training walk as she managed the Pontcysyllte aqueduct a few days later.
M.
Nice to walk along and go through the tunnel next to it.
A. C.
Beautiful quiet summer walk with crystal clear water
F. R.
A beautiful spot to walk in both directions
I. S.
Great view, amazing architecture. Walked dog over this and back, will visit again. Also leads into Chirk shops and close to Chirk railway station.
P. S.
Lovely walk along the canal, parked the car outside the poachers pub, lovely place to have a meal there, walked to viaduct, lots of long boats out to day, really did enjoy the walk, alovely place to see and visit, why not visit too chirk castle nearbye
s. m.
Amazing lights very beautiful
S. G.
Very lovely walk over the aqueduct with beautiful scenery.
A. J.
Very impressive. Not much to it except an amazing aquaduct, but it's free and it's awesome.
M. W.
Beautiful scenery. Peaceful location. Amazing engineering structures.
J. D. A.
It was very sunny when we walked along it so the walk was lovely! We walked for around an hour from the tourist information point located just around the corner, finding geo caches on the way, lovely pubs and far interesting views!
K. T.
A very interesting historical site.
C. R.
A fabulous canal walk and you just may catch a glimpse of a steam train going past.
M. B.
We kayaked along part of the Llangollen Canal.
Chirk Aquaduct, Chirk Tunnel.
Nice paddle.
R. H.
Interesting parallel aqueduct & railway viaduct crossing the Ceiriog Valley.
J. M.
Stoped to have a look on way from chirk castle, very interesting .
A.
Really nice walk from the cafe car park either over the aqueduct or under the canal tunnel under the outskirts of Chirk. Nice to see the railway viaduct running alongside the aqueduct too, makes for nice views of the countryside and a reminder of the engineering that makes the view possible! Well kept paths too.
P. E.
lovely place loads of history cant wait to revisit :)
A. G.
Lovely walk from Chirk castle (pretty gates) down to the Ceiriog River, back up to the last pub over the aqueduct through the tunnel and back to the castle gates.
J. D.
I loved it here. The other end of the World Heritage Site and a great example of 19th Century engineering. Chirk itself is worth a visit with a Grade 1 listed castle. The 2 viaducts side by side look especially good with traffic on both. Lovely cafe near the top of the viaduct at the tunnel end. Worth a detour and a hour or so of your time.
P. R.
Smaller than its neighbour, but you do get a spooky canal tunnel thrown in! Small FREE car park with cafe nearby.
P. R.
Always love a walk along the famous aqueduct, built br Thomas Telford.
D. W.
Nice to walk over the Aqueduct, after walking through the tunnel. Amazing.
M.
Lovely picturesque site with viaduct, aqueduct and valley below. Even if you just want a short walk along side of the canal.
t. d.
Park in the police station car park it's free. Not very far to walk to get to the aqueduct where you can walk over it into England. You can also walk through the tunnel , very dark. The walk can be as long or short as you like . Definitely worth a visit . Get do.e great photos
Y. H.
Havung a viaduct next to the aqueduct makes it different from its more famous sibling. 🙂
J. R.
Have walked across the aqueduct, and through the tunnel, to travel them on a boat was a great experience
B. P.
Nice setting with good cafe within walking distance.
B. W.
Nice to visit if you are in the area. Interesting to watch the canal boats and to walk along the aqueduct.
S. P.
Lovely walk over and foot path beyond. Pop into the Bridge Inn at the other side.
J. J.
Quite an Experience going over the Aqueduct. I was OK walking over this one as I am frightened of heights 😅
V. S.
Good views across the border between England and Wales. The railway viaduct goes right beside this aqueduct so if you are lucky you can see a boat and train crossing the river at the same time. There is a small seating area next to the tunnel to rest your legs after a walk, or if you are feeling peckish you can walk to a cafe on the road just above.
J. S.
Lovely walk along well maintained towpath alongside canal ,over aquaduct with beautiful view of valley below.railway viaduct runs to one side.
v.
This is a pretty spot in itself, sitting right by the long Chirk tunnel and a turning area for the boats, and watching them navigate around is entertaining. A nearby cafe has a free car park and, if walking is your thing, it puts you at the heart of the Trevor Basin and Ceiriog Valley network, which offer many routes through the fantastic scenery around here. And, of course, it's close to Chirk Castle which is worth seeing itself, as well as offering plenty more places to explore. It's a great spot.
K. H.
Fantastic piece of industrial architecture with wonderful views. You can park at Chirk Bridge at quiet times and easily walk along to the aqueduct. If you bring a torch you can continue through the 400 m tunnel. Although the path is level I would not recommend crossing the aqueduct or entering the tunnel for wheel chair users as it is rather narrow.
J. H.
A great place to go for a walk by the canal 70 feet up on the bridge!! Beautiful views.
l. m.
Fantastic scenery and the people were so friendly
F. B. d. S.
Great for a nice walk on a sunny day. Amazing views. Definitely recommended.
J. W.
Very pretty and interesting. Would have stayed longer if we had more time.
J. D.
Not as awesomely inspiring as Pontcysyllte Aqueduct but still a great place to visit with the rail viaduct alongside and Chirk tunnel too.
s. w.
If you are lucky you will see a train and a boat crossing at the same time Great views n
Not for those that don't like heights Keep Yong children very close
V. W.
Lovely walk over the aqueduct. Great tourist attraction and nice to see the barges going along. One was moored up and was displaying the painted barge ware you usually see.
M. D.
Fantastic. Extraordinary tunel "The Darkie".
D. J.
Lovely location to walk off a pub lunch and enjoy some stunning scenery. Great on a sunny afternoon or crisp frosty morning, always new views or colourful scenery to enjoy and get photos of.
P. L.
Amazing piece of engineering worth a look and the tunnel just after
k. l.
An engineering feet.fab views
J. B.
Good experience, I'd never seen an aquaduct other than in pictures. Enjoyed seeing the canal boats.
B. A.
Travelling across the aqueduct on a narrow boat is not as scary as you might imagine. It's a straight enclosed line without any room to go wrong. It's really not particularly interesting as you go across, the best views of this amazing structure are from the side at either end. Getting on and off at the Trevor end can be a bit dicey as there is not a lot of room to manoeuvre if there are other boats waiting to get on
Walking across is a good option for someone with a fear of heights as there is a rail to hold on to.
J. R.
We stopped randomly whilst driving past and we're so glad we did. There is a canal tunnel which is so long it takes 10mins to drive through. We walked a little way in, braver people can walk all the way through. There is a viaduct bridge (bridge for canal boats) which is very high and runs over a river. Right next to it there is a train bridge too.
P. S.
What a picturesque place. Had a lovely stroll with family between Wales and England. Beautiful.
P. W.
I walk over this and down the canal about once a week and it never gets boring.
C. W.
Stunning views and easy to access. Well worth a stroll across and through the 400+ metre Chirk tunnel
D. P.
Short walk down from main road. Hard core path along the canel with beautiful view of the aqueduct. Canel was busy as it's the main route into and out of Llangollen.
l. r.
Love place for a walk , you can also walk through the tunnel take a torch or use your mobile to light the way.
N. J.
Nice and scenic to either walk along the towpath or travel by barge, if traveling with young children the tunnel may be a bit long, dark and scary for them however they can be walked along a road running above the canal
L. L.
Less busy than the Pontcysllty aqueduct, bring a torch if you want to go through the tunnel. Free parking at the near by car park, their is a steep path from the road down to the canal. Well worth a visit.
K. E.
So much natural beauty. I appreciate the information signs.
W. C.
Great views, nice walk, friendly people
P. H.
An amazing monument to British engineering.
S. W.
Great at night see it all lit up
A. H.
Great place to see fabulous confident architecture from the industrial revolution, canal and railway running side by side. The tunnel also has a towpath so you can walk through.
D. S.
The less frequently visited Froncysyllte Aqueduct's sister! But just as spectacular.
C. F.
Fantastic place to visit. A lot of history to see and understand the advanced thought processes of people of generations gone by.
An elevated stream across a valley for goods. Simply Wow!!'
It actually joins England & Wales
M.
Worth a visit: nice views and walks. Probably not worth a special journey. Not to be confused with major nearby aqueduct at Froncysyllte, which is a world heritage site.
D. H.
Lovley little spot.very tranquel
S. M.
The aqueduct is great for a walk, although a head for heights is necessary! Café Wylfa is nearby which is great stop off for a coffee and/or some good food. Sunday lunch there is a must. Enjoy.
D. K.
Impressive aqueduct alongside another (rail) viaduct. You can walk alongside the canal end-to-end and if you're feeling intrepid, tramp through the tunnel as well. Take a torch though!
C. G.
Beautiful structure with fantastic views. Made all the more stunning with the railway viaduct right next to it.
B.
Beautiful 200yr old Aqueduct,Llangollen Canal, with Viaduct parallel.Owain Glyndwr and his army fought in nearby fields, If you’ve head for heights, aqueduct walk is beautiful. Half way along you,ve one foot in Wales and one in England. Chirk Castle by foot about an hours stroll.
M. H.
Great place for a nice walk.
k. k.
Stunning views
M. C.
Very interesting place to visit.
P. L.
An engineering marvel with parallel railway viaduct to one side and awesome drops to the other. Not as scary as its bigger sister: the Pontcysyllte at Trevor, but still gets the adrenaline going. Small car park at café opposite. Visit best combined with other attractions such as Chirk castle as it only takes a few minutes cross there and back.
A. W.
Beautiful place to visit
P. C.
A lovely walk from Chirk Bank, worth walking through the Darkie tunnel too. From the aqueduct you have a close view of the viaduct and the river below you.
A. G.
Went in the evening to see the aqueduct lit up. It's only happening for 3 weeks and is one of 5 structures that are being lit up . They include Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Dinas Bran Castle, Llangollen and Horseshoe Falls, Llangollen and Viaduct, Chirk/Aqueduct, Chirk. I believe they are all World Heritage sites. Even without the lights it's a fascinating place to visit, steeped with history and quite breath taking! Warning though ... not good for those who fear heights. Walking over the aqueduct my legs turned to jelly!
R. B.
Beautiful scenery. Amazing that the bridges have been standing for 200 years. Lovely walk across.
G. F.
Love this place. Canals, railway line, lovely scenery and great walks.
J. K.
Lovely spot.
H. O.
It is a lovely walk over the aqueduct and along the canal. It is also suitable for my husband's mobility scooter. Really enjoyable
M. W.
Such a stunning location, if you haven't already been then I would recommend you do.
N. J.
Fantastic structure with great views and lots of canal boat activity.
M. K.
Not as visted as much as the other aquaduct on the Llangollen canal but just as intresting. Ther is also a tunnel on the Welsh side you can walk through which is just under half a kilometre long. One side is in England the other in wales which makes it pretty cool.
J. A.
Nice walk and good views, plenty of pubs along the way as well, park at the poachers pub or chirk police station depending on which direction you're coming from!
M. S.
Nice walk, lovely old house along canal. Shame it's been stripped of copper and floor /ceiling, Windows smashed, toilet still intact.
J. P.
Fantastic place to go for a walk and really nice scenery
G. W.
Not too far to walk and the view is fab as you walk across. Definitely worth visiting and there are some more acqueducts very close by.
M. B.
Nice part of the canal to enjoy
C.
Stunning vista over the valley in both directions, one of the local aqueducts you can safely paddle over
D. S.
Often overshadowed by the unpronounceable Ponty aqueduct, the Chirk aqueduct is also an impressive piece of engineering with the added bonus of a railway alongside. If you're really lucky a steam train and narrowboat can be seen at the same time!
L. W.
It's nice to see people who are on holiday and it's good for the mindfulness tranquil setting
D. I.
Lovely walk 🚶♂️ good views

P. V.
Amazing piece of architecture set in a stunning setting. Definitely worth a visit whether by boat, bike or foot
T. W.
Chirk Aqueduct is a pleasant walk with views over open fields down the Ceiriog Valley. The viaduct also runs parallel with the aqueduct and trains run to chester in one direction and to Shrewsbury in the other direct. From there they connect with the mainline networks. Its a beautiful spot where England meets Wales and there is signage showing this on the canal towpath.
M. M.
This is a beautiful area, the walk on the aqueduct is stunning
J. (.
Lovely walk from Wales to England and back again. Beautiful views and surroundings. Top spot.
S. H.

CHIRK AQUEDUCT & RAILWAY VIADUCT, CEIRIOG VALLEY, CHIRK, WALES.
CHIRK AQUEDUCT IS A 21 M (70 FT) HIGH AND 220 M (710 FT) LONG AQUEDUCT THAT CARRIES THE SHROPSHIRE UNION CANAL ACROSS THE CEIRIOG VALLEY AND WHICH MARKS THE BORDER BEWTEEN WALES AND ENGLAND.
THE AQUEDUCT WAS DESIGNED BY THOMAS TELFORD AND COMPLETED IN 1801. IT POSSESSES A CAST IRON TROUGH WITHIN WHICH THE WATER IS CONTAINED, THE MASONRY WALLS EFFECTIVELY HIDING THE CAST IRON INTERIOR. THE AQUEDUCT FOLLOWED TELFORD'S INNOVATIVE LONGDON-ON-TERN AQUEDUCT ON THE SHREWSBURY CANAL, AND WAS A FORERUNNER OF THE PONTCYSYLLTE AQUEDUCT ALSO ON THE LLANGOLLEN CANAL.
TELFORD PIONEERED THE USE OF CAST IRON IN BRIDGES AS WELL AS AQUEDUCTS, AND CAST IRON TROUGHS WERE WIDELY USED ELSEWHERE ON THE BRITISH CANAL NETWORK, ESPECIALLY WHERE A SECURE AND WATERTIGHT CROSSING OR BRIDGE WAS NEEDED. ANOTHER FAMOUS EXAMPLE IS THE COSGROVE AQUEDUCT ON THE GRAND JUNCTION CANAL AT MILTON KEYNES IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE.
THE AQUEDUCT CONSISTS OF TEN ARCHES, EACH WITH A SPAN OF 12 M.(40 FT.). THE WATER LEVEL IS 20 M(65 FT) ABOVE THE GROUND. THE FIRST STONE WAS LAID ON 17 JUNE 1796. WILLIAM HAZLEDINE PROVIDED THE IRONWORK FOR THE AQUEDUCT. SIDE PLATES WERE ADDED TO THE AQUEDUCT IN 1870. IT CROSSES THE RIVER CLOSE TO THE LATER RAILWAY VIADUCT.
THE RAILWAY VIADUCT AT CHIRK WHICH WAS ERECTED IN 1846-8 AND REBUILT IN 1858 WAS THE WORK OF THE SCOTTISH ENGINEER HENRY ROBERTSON. THE 100 FEET HIGH STONE STRUCTURE WAS BUILT FOR THE SHREWSBURY AND CHESTER RAILWAY AND HAS TEN SPANS WITH ROUND ARCHES BETWEEN PEDIMENTED ABUTMENTS CONTAINING NICHES. THREE FURTHER ARCHES AT EITHER END OF THE VIADUCT REPLACE FORMER TIMBER SPANS AND ARE DATED 1858-9. THE VIADUCT STANDS SOME 30 FEET ABOVE THE ADJOINING AQUEDUCT.
