Reviews of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Trevor Basin Visitor Centre
M. B.
Great day out and fab 2.5/3 hour walk from the main car park. It's not a huge car park but didn't struggle to find a parking space and was pleased to find 2 electric charging points but you can only use one at a time. It's a pay and display car park but only £3 for the whole day and as is the norm now you can pay by card so don't worry if you don't have any change.
The car park goes straight onto the canal and there's a little gift shop and information centre just before the aquaduct. We chose to walk off down to the left before hand and come back round to finish off walking back over the aquaduct. You get great views from below and from a distance as you go round as well as taking in the fabulous sights of the viaduct. There's a very short part of the walk along the road but it doesn't take away any of the beautiful countryside views.
Walking across the aquaduct itself is a great treat and although the footpath is narrow there is plenty of room to pass other walkers.
If you prefer you can cross in a barge to which you can book at the visitors centre next to the car park.
There's a great little tea room just up the round from the start of the walk too in a converted church. Serves teas, coffees, soft drinks, snack and afternoon tea.
P. S.
The place is beautiful for taking a stroll either on the bridge or a walk by the river. Has few beautiful cafe houseboats by the aqueduct.
It's easily accessible from the Wrexham city center via bus no. 5 (30mins), followed by a 10 mins walk.

I have to declare a Nationalistic bias… I’m a Welshman 🏴and Trevor (Trefor) was my home 🏠 village as a child growing up. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is now a World 🌍 Heritage Site. It goes without saying the ‘stream in the sky’ is truly an architectural masterpiece. Thomas Telford and those involved in the construction of the aqueduct command our respect ✊. Try to view it from all angles to truly appreciate what an immense construction it is.
A. R.
Beautiful 11 mile walk which takes in the magnificent aqueduct. Stunning views and great for all ages and abilities.
G. B.
Great place to visit as it is a World Heritage Site. The engineering is a marvellous feat. Great to walk across and see the narrow boats travel across it. The visitor centre is good to visit to appreciate the hard work that went into its' construction.
K. T.
I have seen this site from the A5 in the past, but it is amazing to be able to walk across this historical site.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to explore but have put it on our list of places to visit again. We were there at 9:30 am Sunday and surprised that it was busy with all the boats on the move and a bus load of tourists! There were Australian and American people who had hired narrow boats negotiating the basin and aqueduct. Fabulous veiws from the towpath on the aqueduct, and scary as it's 126 feet high.
J. B.
Great place to visit for walkers or canal boat enthusiasts. The Pontcysyllte aqueduct is a UNESCO world heritage site and stands 126 feet above the ground. The aqueduct and canal basin are next to Ty Mawr Country Park and it's possible to make a circular walk around the whole area. The aqueduct and canal basin are beside Trevor, where you can get refreshments in the Telford pub or Chapel tea rooms. There's a good carpark with toilet facilities near the canal basin.

Decent size car parks just a short walk from the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Free toilets. There are two cafes - Butty and sweet cafe boat as well as the Chapel Tea rooms, and the Telford Pub with a great outdoor seating area by the Canal. The Trevor Basin Information Centre is located by the Aqueduct and provides a gift shop, museum as well as drinks and snacks.
W. Z.
The visitor centre of Pontcysyllte aqueduct. Free to visit. Some history of this aqueduct is introduced here.

Lovely friendly staff clean shop. Great boats
P. L.
Small shop selling a range souvenirs such as postcards, magnets and pens. There is also a hot drinks machine for tea, coffee and hot chocolate, a small selection of snacks and chilled drinks.
In the room.next to the shop is a display about the aqueduct.

Excellent for a day out, brilliant views, a little scary if you dont like heights. Parking can be tight if busy day.
C. B.
Wow a great place to see, we jumped on a canal boat ride across it, giving you the breath taking views and a real reality check of how high up it is with only 4 inches between the edge and the drop. Well worth it and not very expensive , we parked by the visitors center which was free parking and right by the bridge itself
C. B.
Stunning views and an amazing experience crossing the Aqueduct, which is an amazing feat of engineering by Thomas Telford.
A. O.
Love it there... Great experience
C. H.
Spent a lovely few hours by and in the environs of the aqueduct. Walked across the bridge. Visitors centre wasn't open when we got there so can't comment on that. Worth seeing especially on a sunny day.
M. E.
I visited here in the middle of the week and its only March so the hustle and bustle of the season had not kicked off. Fantastic weather brought out quite a few walkers. The public toilets were the only place open. Fascinating place and a must visit if ever you are near.Would definitely recommend and a walk over the aqueduct if you have a head for heights.
S. J.
Hire a barge and go over the Grade 1 Listed World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct for an unforgettable day. Incredible.
S. F.
Breathtaking views on the aqueduct though the walkway is a bit narrow for passing other people. Definitely keep your dog on a leash! This is not for those with a fear of heights or out of control children.
N. C.
Very interesting and informative. Enjoyed the boat trip along the viaduct .Chelsea was very informative and helpful. The little museum was good too.museum was free too enter.
R. W. K.
Beautiful place, old authentic and very well maintained.
Lovely walks in the surrounding area.
View from aquaduct is lovely, to be under aquaduct and looking up to it is quite impressive.
I. D.
Wonderful place to visit. Museum and cafe. Very high. Not for the fainthearted
N. T.
Nice place to visit as long as you are not scared of heights lol.
P. F.
Just had a walk along the canal from Trevor... Great walk with the dogs... Lovely to see so many people enjoying the canal, walking, cycling and the boats... Really lovely atmosphere all the way there and back. 🙂
D. L.
Lovely World Heritage Site, children like to visit, always hoping to bump into the canal boat which sells sweets. Nice walks around the Aquaduct aswell as over it.
T. M. H.
Wow! What a fabulous feat of engineering. Well worth the visit!
C. G.
Excellent experience. One to remember, however HOLD SMALL CHILDREN CLOSE TO YOU AS THEY COULD EASILY FALL IN-BETWEEN THE RAILINGS. It's surprising how extra safety measures haven't been took. But this is a great experience ,just use care if children are with you. Also the paths are breaking up in places. A lady tripped and fell to the floor in front of me
M. R.
Stunning if slightly frightening walk, in a lovely area.
d. e.
A great visitors centre well presented and lovely staff, but the gem is the aqueduct, what an experience to walk over this, Telford was a mighty engineer to create this 18 arch beauty, a must see if you are in the Llangollen area, look down on Dee river and the rugby field...
m. h.
Amazing fete of engineering. The walk along the Viaduct is a little scary if you have small children as the railings have large gaps between and they could easily fall through. Surely some additional safety measures could be taken ?
R. M.
This is a fantastic place to visit, with stunning walks and breathtaking views, this is one of the best places to visit in Wales.
Take a little extra time to go down to the river and walk to the Ty Mawr farm a little way down stream. You will engoy this fantastic walk.
J. W.
I think would be better if they didn't cram to many people in one narrow boat, 2 hour with 6 people across is too many when can't seat down properly. Scones, jam, cream & fruit loaf very good.
D. H.
If you have small children keep them reigned in as the gaps in the railing are wide enough for a kid to fall through. Well worth visit though and kids enjoyed it (except for one who is scared of heights!)
K. E.
Parking is no longer free here. Blue badge and permit holders only. Got there this morning and car park was empty but I couldn't park even if I paid!
S. C.
Amazing
I. E.
Great visitors centre vidioes showing how the aquaduct was built. Array of tools and fasteners use in construction. The walk across the viaduct itself is stunning, a short distance along the canal is a narrow boat selling teas and ice cream, lovely on a sunny day.
L. W.
Fantastic bit of civil engineering. Can walk over the aqueduct. This is quite high up, so if you don't have a head for heights this is not recommended. Views are good from the aqueduct.
J. H.
Lovely walk with the kids
P. M.
Great place for a walk.
M. F.
Fantastic aqueduct breathtaking views with free parking, clean toilets boat trips. Boat hire and a cafe boat next to the visitors centre set in a lovely green area with picnic benches

Love it however, I used to cycle and walk over the aqueduct no problem, but now it's like my legs wont let me, they go to jelly lol
C. H.

Ein tolles Bauwerk, um es aber zu bewandern muss man 40m Höhe aushalten können.
Aber das ganze Tal der Nachbarort Llangollen ist ein Besuch wert

A great building, but to hike it you have to be able to withstand 40m height.

(Translated) During the Industrial Revolution in Britain, special attention was paid to canals in the transport of goods. It is considered as the safest and most profitable transport service for the transportation of dangerous goods such as chemicals. The Llangollen Aqueduct, built as a freight route by boat through the mountains of Wales, is an amazing structure built to connect two hills over the River Dee without the use of a lock to travel down the hillside. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is located in Wrexham, Wales (Coordinates 52.97053°N 3.08783°W). called the bridge.
Opened on 26 November 1805, it is Britain's oldest and longest bridge for boat traffic. Length is 307 meters. Width is 3.7 meters. The depth is 1.6 meters. Height is 39 meters from the river. It holds 1.5 million liters of water. It cost £47,000 to build at the time. And this is the tallest bridge of its kind in the world
Marking an important milestone in engineering and metallurgy, this is a unique design by engineers Thomas Telford and William Jessop. It is built on 18 stone pillars and 19 metal arches built with a gap of 16 meters between each other. One side of the bridge is a waterway for boat traffic and the other side is a paved road for the horses that pulled the boats at that time. This footpath is built with windows about 6 inches above the water surface to prevent the water splashed by boats from falling on the footpath and preventing the passengers from slipping.
Reflecting the indestructibility of metal casting in Britain at the time, these arches and the walls on both sides of the canal were made of light and strong cast metal. Limestone water and cow's blood were taken for the mortar to build the stone pillars. It took 10 years from 1795 to 1805 to build it using primitive cranes, scaffolding and human labor.
Once in five years, traffic is stopped here, water is released into D river, the bridge is inspected and maintenance work is carried out.
It is now a very popular pastime to travel slowly for days along these canals in narrow boats.
