Reviews of Bootham Bar
One of the most architecturally stunning church related building I’ve never been too. An incredible amount of stain glass windows and when the Sun is shining behind them they really are deserving of all the praise that has been bestowed upon them.
The trip up the tower definitely worth it, you will see some very unique views over York and the surrounding areas. However you do have to walk up very narrow spiralling steps, 275 of them to be precise, so it’s not suitable for everyone. All in all a good way to spend a few hours when you are in York.
Well preserved, good for walk
This beautiful old gateway - or "Bar" - is the closest to York Minster and so is recommended as the starting/finishing point of a walk around the city walls (that's a "must do" and is free). Even if you are not so energetic as to walk the whole wall, do ascend the steps at Bootham Bar for a fantastic view of the Minster from across the ancient rooftops. It has a real "feel" of its long history.
Great historical site. Worth a visit !
Right opposite to the Yorkshire Art gallery this bar is hard to miss!
Rare opportunity to walk the medieval walls of a city. Good views of the Minster and the neighborhood.
This is the best garden I ever visited. It is large, it has many exquisitely maintained and very special exhibits. Unlike other botanical gardens (the Montreal Botanical Garden comes to mind, which is very nice as well) this one had no gimmicks (no insect shows, no origami, no plastic exhibits) just many many beautiful plants from perennial flowers to giant sequoias. I have not seen any green houses. Everything stands to be outside. Visit on a sunny day.
One of the historic entrances to the city, part of the city walls. Bootham bar looks nice and is a good place to get onto the walls.
Fine! Just went to a shop there called Sore thumbs retro game shop
One of the four main medieval gateways into the walled city, dating from the 11th century. Steps lead up to a chamber with a timber ceiling and metal gates which have to be kept shut to prevent pigeons from getting in! At the time of my visit there was a guide explaining all about the history. There are public toilets close by.
I loved the ancient stone walls and walkways. Something unique about York. The walls are all walkable and are a great viewpoint to the town. Definitely worth visiting .
Visited on Tuesday. No fee for entry. Gates open. Not many people. Excellent views. Must be views
This point is one of the entries to Roman city wall. Please note that this place is too narrow to walk. You can walk across and exit at other ends and can enjoy the views in between.
Superb place
Excellent services
Loved it
Lovely picturesque walk with stunning views. Its free steeped in history for us adults and will entertain the kids for a while.Go for toilet breaks beforehand is my only advice.Because the wall is quite lengthy.
Northern entrance to York. Start of york walls walk.
a beautiful York landmark, home of the ancient Roman fort. it also has a museum
This iss in York, York iss awesome. Ergo Botham Bar is awesome. You shoukdd definitely take it in, after York Minster, which I have also reviewed for you. You're welcome.
Amazing place was going to The Fat Badger Pub
Amazingly beautiful architecture, didn't venture inside as was here to begin the wall walk, but definitely worth a visit!
A good old traditional pub near the centre of York fast service and a great place for a pint
Went past on the tour bus got to see a lot didn't make use of the hop on hop off just did the full tour.
Historic gate for the old wall that surrounds York. Nice views of Yorkminster church from the wall.
Passed by again, only been around York since 1971. Very little change, always a good place to watch traffic and people rushing hither and thither.
Adore Bootham Bar 🍸 ❤
York’s Famous Wall shows off its glory!
Historic and amazing.
Just passing bye very good 👍
Very nice place to have a coffee.
Standing on Roman gateway. When you walk under this bar you are walking through history. People have done just that since AD71.
Best and most interesting park of the city wall
Nice entry to the walls of York. Dogs not allowed though so beware or face a potential £100 fine!
Walked the 3 miles of city walls. As stunning as ever.
Nice coffestop on the wall, good service
City centre location, great point to start the Bar Walls walk. Minster, Art Gallery + Theatre Royal are all accessible nearby.

(Translated) At this point was one of the four gateways to the Roman city. The current construction dates from the 11th century when the arch was built, while the rest mostly belongs to the 14th century.
In 1501 a knocker was installed on the door since the Scots had to knock first and ask the Mayor for permission to enter the city.
For my taste it is the most important door in York today, since through it you get fully into beautiful, quite lively streets that constitute the old center of the city.

Beautiful gate where you can enter the city wall for a walk along the old city.
One of the entrances to the walls. An interesting walk and views, although a bit crowded.
There are several gates that create the amazing atmosphere of this city. I was very impressed the first time I came here.
I guess I still am :)
A piece of history and lots of attractions close to each other, I recommend it.
Fabulous section of the York City Wall. The entire walls take about 2.5 hrs to walk not suitable for wheelchair users or children in pushchairs. It's quite uneven in place at a few stairs
Walking along the fortress wall road and looking at the surroundings gives you a leisurely thought. It is a wall road with a reasonable walking distance. You can take great photos with the city in the background and feel the old days of England while looking at the cute buildings and gardens.
One of the entrances to the Roman walls
A welcoming environment to experience the past or present, without stress, just contemplating and enjoying this tranquility, valuing memory and culture.
Residents are equally welcoming when we ask for information. Men, women, couples.
It is one of the gates of the York wall, here you can climb the wall and tour it completely free or go down through another of the gates of the wall and thus be able to see the city from another point of view. Also, the photos from the front square are excellent, as you can see the Bootham Bar and the peaks of the cathedral behind.
One of the gateways to the city of York and which also serves as the starting point for the walk along the Roman wall. In this case, if we start here, we will go around the city in such a way that we will have beautiful views of York Minster.
(Translated) One of the six entry gates to the city center.

Jedna z sześciu bram wjazdowych do centrum miasta.
(Translated) Ok. Beautiful. You can take some souvenir photos. Part of the walls remains.
(Original)
Ok. Bella. Si può fare qualche foto ricordo. Parte delle mura rimane.
One of the gates of the wall around the city, well preserved...
Found it by chance and had a lovely walk along before heading home.. garden views are wonderful!
Worth seeing city gate, access to the center of York.
Part of the full wall experience, the wall is worth the stars.
Located on the West of the city Wall,
at the Bootham Arch walkway, where you can use the steps to get on the wall, the Hole in The Wall Pub is situated, quite small on the inside but has a really good seating area that runs along the wall for about 50m Great location.
Went past on abus tour, guild had some funny stories
