Reviews of Dales Countryside Museum
D. C.
Nice little friendly museum focussing on the trade of the locality. Reasonable entry price with refunds on maximum car park charge
A. T.
Had a lovely day doing a drawing workshop about the Love Tokens, Sittings and Songs exhibition at the museum today. Well worth a visit to see their eclectic collections!
p. f.
Great place of learning and interest, even has dry stone walling sessions run by volunteers. Remember to visit the train carriages out the back which contain terrific exhibits of times long gone. Pay and display car parking ( coins, not an app), present part of ticket for reduction on admittance. Recommend to all.
M. C.
Fantastic little museum with a few fairly dated interpretation boards in the areas on the train, but some nice hands on activities for very young children elsewhere much better and brilliant staff especially education who were supportive and welcoming to all comes s facilitating us to make fantastic Saxon brooches, interesting exhibition on the Dales unique landscape in particular Peat and the nature it supports and its importance in acting as UK equivalent to the Amazon rainforest. Your ticket is just a receipt but hang on to it because it's valid for 7 days, the cafe shuts before the museum so go earlier if that appeals to you. There's a little steam locomotive, rural life exhibits and a lot to discover about the area above and below ground and about the local dialect and way of life.
A. O.
Nice museum with its own carpark. Full sized steam train on site with entry to carriages. The museum itself is a good size with lots squeezed in. Lots for the kids to interact with
L. P.
Visited the cafe here. Friendly service, good choice of food, yummy home-baked cakes. So much so, that we visited it twice in one day
G. S.
Nice relaxing day. Visisted the Wensleydale Cheese Factory/Visitor Centre and had a nice walk round Hawes.
L. P.
This is a very cheap and interesting attraction in the middle of Hawes based at the old train station. Kids under 16 are free to enter and there is plenty for them to do especially in the old train carriages that are still sat on the track. Well worth a visit
F. B.
This is a small museum but quite informative. There is also a gift shop, isn't there always, and if your a cyclist there is a cafe where you can get food and drink as well as bicycle spares and accessories. It is right on the car park in Hawes and a very short stroll takes you into Hawes shops and the famous Wensleydale Creamery, more cheese Grommit?
J. O.
A great glimpse into the history of the place. It's not over technical and at the same time it's not to simplified I enjoyed it but it's a morning or afternoon place. Well worth a visit though, park there and after go into the town
M. G.
Great place to spend a couple of hours ;)
R. D.
The museum gave a fascinating into the history of the Wensleydale area and the North Yorkshire Dales - from the landscape to the tough lives of the people. The staff were friendly and helpful and were happy to answer questions
P. B.
A TARDIS of a museum, 8ncluding a mocked up mine tunnel an a redundant couple of old railway carriages giving a timeline of th Dales. Fascinating stuff, although the art exhibition was lost on me.
E. A.
It was quite a nice museum. There is a bit on the local area, mining and such. There's an exhibition part that changes around every once in a while. Worth visiting for the inexpensive price.
R. S.
A very well set out and presented museum
Well worth a visit
J. W.
Took 2 teens a toddler and a 6 year old and they all loved it

m. M.
Excellent museum brilliant exhibits and well put together.
Grossly under advertised so it's not reaching its full potential.
As an illustration were the only ones in on a Saturday.
Staff were brilliant and informative.
P. W.
We visited the cafe which doubles up as a cycle shop with both new and vintage examples on display. Good is good and wholesome and although it is a pay and display car Park it is worth a visit to go to the museum and adjacent rope works.
A. J.
Pay once and return as many times as you like within a week. Perfect, train activities also worth spending some time on. Lots to do and the cafe next door is busy but amazing.
F. P.
What a cute little museum! A step back in time in the converted train carriage.
L. N.
Great exhibition on Dale's life! Very nice building, combining old and new. Well worth a visit, even on a sunny day.
K. C.
A nice little museum for when it's raining. Well worth the entry fee.
D. P.
Delightful staff who have extremely good local knowledge. Very helpful too.
J. W.
very helpful staff. reasonably priced and wheelchair accessible.. Great visit for a couple of hours
P. H.
A fine range of artifacts excellently presented. Well worth a visit.
J. P.
Unfortunately this facility doesn't open in January since Covid. In the past we've found it very good and they sell notebooks which the pages are made from stone! They are lovely to write on.
M. J.
Great local museum, literally labour of love.
P. D.
Interesting place to visit, my son loved the train behind the old station building.
M. T.
Nice museum about life in the Dales. Currently operating a one way system in line with social distancing. We spent an hour here as our car park was running out but could have easily spent more. Great mock-up of a lead mine and a current exhibit on fell running was eye opening. Tickets are valid for a week after purchase and there's a discount if you park in the DNP.car park.
R. D. M. (.
Fantastic views, the people who you meet are so friendly and helpful, such a beautiful relaxing place to visit, you won't want to leave at all.
L. W.
What a fantastic museum. I cant believe how much was in it, well laid out and very educational. £4.30 for over 60's and 4.80 for under, such great value. I highly recommend a visit
G. F.
Felt very authentic and provided detailed information and exhibits covering the historical mining, farming living and railways in the Yorkshire Dales.
K. C.
Lovely museum, brilliantly laid out, very well presented.
J. T.
Hawes is such a lovely place for a days visit.
M. F.
Visited the Information centre for local walking routes. The lady assistant was most helpful & knowledgeable. We were able to purchase a leaflet that gave us several options & have successfully followed. Many thanks
A. W.
Best £4.30 ever spent. Covid safe if you want it. Full of exhibits about the Dales right back a few million years. Interesting and good displays.
G. W.
Dropped into cafe for a light lunch with a cuppa. Very nice.
A. R.
Well worth a visit. Great exhibitions.
M. N.

G. G.
Great value for money and great countryside experience
J. D.
Worth some time to explore. Not expensive, good gifts and a tea room.
K. C.
It had a lot inside
Plus a train outside to walk through
K. C.
Welcoming, interesting and informative along with friendly staff.
P. V.
Very interesting well laid out and informative
C. H.
Excellent twally enjoyed it and excellent disabled facilities
M. L.
Very interesting museum mostly dedicated to lead mining in Yorkshire.
F. D.
Don't allow dogs in so we were denied entry.
D. P.
You know I wasn't really expecting too much. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The train carriage was good and quite nostalgic, the lead mine very good and the room settings excellent. Staff very helpful. Cafe and bike shop nearby also looked good. £1 off your entry if you pay for parking outside. Overall brilliant way to spend an hour or so.
D. M.
I love museums. It could be a museum of bog rolls & I'd still love it. This en dint have much history of loo paper, but it was still great.
E. m.
Good artifacts displayed on local history going way back.
I. K. M. A.
Lovely setting and quite peaceful in early October.
D. M. P.
Very interesting place. Lots of different topics and interesting buildings
C. D.
Was nice but for me it was more for children
M. A.
Brilliant for a stroll around inside and out. Lots of activities for children. A great little cafe selling THE best coffee
G. M.
Well worth a visit if you want to find out more about how people in the Dales used to live. Good for children as well.
A. M.
Would love to be more positive. We visited with our 9 year old grandson on a wet, chilly October day. Children's quiz available. Staff are friendly, informative and the lady on duty was good with children. Cafe is quick, clean and decent. Most exhibits are as dry as dust! I think they do their best at this small venue but more imaginative, colourful displays surely would engage visitors more.
A. C.
A lovely museum with a great collection of local artifacts, great gift shop with items not seen anywhere else around the Dale's area
W. R.
Its ok, interesting. At this covid time too, best to pre book a time. We arrived without a booking and got lucky, only had to wait 15 mins as they are in 15 min slot to keep social distancing. Nice half hour out though.
D. W.
Loved this place. My wife and I went with our 2 children (both under 10). Entry for both kids was free and one of the adult tickets was discounted because we parked in the museum car park. From memory, we paid about £8 for us all. The exhibits are extensive, varied and very informative. Plenty to interest us and the kids. Part of the exhibits are actually located on a train at the rear which was fun. The staff were friendly, the museum was clean and well presented. A bargain for the entry fee. Finished off with a brew in the hipster, cyclist cafe on the way out (good coffee). Great for a rainy half day.
S. F.
This compact museum has displays about the animals and landscape of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. I found it an informative place to visit.
r. w.
I live in Leeds we have lots of free museums much better than this one and this cost £4.80 per person
J. P.
A good place to go. Helpful staff and a good cafe in the bike shop, good food. All set in the old station building.
D. H.
Good time for all the family, plenty to see and do to easily fill a couple of hours if it is raining. Interesting section sited on train carriages. Good cafe selling good food at reasonable price. Good toilets both in the museum and in the car park. Easy acces to everything for those with mobility problems .

A. L.
Excellent museum for those interested in the history of the Yorkshire Dales. Lots of interesting exhibits and art to look at as well as the historic railway station the museum occupies. Well worth a look round. Leave a little time for coffee and cake in the cafe. Good for all ages.
C. B.
Very friendly, welcoming and instructive staff. An interesting collection very well interpreted. The Ingleby and Hartley collection is unique.
J. R.
Great museum with excellent displays
M. A.
Great museum packed with local history from around the Yorkshire Dales. Exhibition hall has different things on throughout the year from local artwork to Calendar Girls Exhibition. Brilliant cafe and bike shop is also attached where you can get the best coffee and cakes, lunch...or just buy a bike. Highly recommended.
J. H.
Surprisingly good rainy day, amazing craft train, everyone was mesmerised by the scratch art, great tunnel in the museum. Would have been interested to read more if not chasing a 2 year old. Will be back next rainy day.
A. S. G. M.
Good place to visit and be informed. Been to Hawes countless times but never been to the museum.
D. M.
A very nice place to visit
T. i. m.
Lovely museum was worth the visit would go again lots to see inside .
M. B.
Interesting insight into traditional Dale life
B. T.
Interesting exhibits, and some nice work in the gallery. Could have put some more in the gallery section and slightly disappointing that some of the items in the glass cases weren't lit (lights just hadn't been turned on). Overall an enjoyable experience though :)
T. B.
We loved this museum when my Husband and I visited, it's really interesting and has lots of great displays on the geology and farming history. Paired with the Wensleydale cheese making museum at the other end of Hawes and the rope making museum you can have a fantastic day out
L. A.
Very interesting museum showing various aspects of life in the Dales. Brilliant use of train carriages as exhibition space. Great and informative way to spend a few hours, really great exhibits.
P. B.

J. G.
Good for all ages, various exhibits from old crafts to modern day.The old train outside holds interesting items.Keep your parking ticket it gives discount off entrance fee.The Rope factory is directly opposite.
A. W.
Well situated at the foot of Crawleyside in historic Stanhope.
An information centre and gift shop contains all the information you need to get about in the area and a good selection of gifts to take back for the family and friends. There is also a cafe for refreshments. Cannot comment because I didn't need anything at the time of my visit.
M. C.
Interesting museum with artifacts and information on life in the Yorkshire Dales over the ages. Some very remarkable pieces in some of the display cabinets. A little pricey but your ticket lasts all week so you can pop back in if you want a revisit.
J. M.
Informative museum about Dales life, such as farming, relics uncovered from as far back as Viking days, knitting history, dry stone walling & agriculture. There was an excellent photo exhibition while we were there called The Shepherdess which inspired you to appreciate the hard work the farmers do all year round. And made me want to return to simple pleasures of enjoying nature, animals & simple living.
M. G.
Muker is a very pleasant small village unfortunately the village shop was closed but the museum in the village was very interesting. We went to get supplies as we were renting a cottage in Gunnerside 3 miles away so we had to go to Hawes a town around 16 miles away. Very busy, it was market day and a lot of interesting things. A creamery making Wensyledale cheese. A rope makers. Many interesting things going on well worth a visit. The drive over was amazing, steep climbs steep drops twisty narrow road sheep in the road and the views were breathtaking. Yorkshire Dales Amazing!
E. L.
It's ok, museum features are a bit lacking but it wasn't exactly expensive.
r.
Love the Dales!! Pop into this place for maps, places of interest and up to date weather....
G. S.
Lovely coffee and cakes in the cafe attached....warm welcome and dog friendly
T. J.
This is a multi purpose centre. It is a museum, information office and education centre all in one. The museum covers life as it was in the Dales including the lead mining industry. The area given over to the knitting, especially the knitters of Dentdale, is exceptionally good.
Exhibitions are held here as well and are changed at regular intervals.
I recommend this place as a place to visit if in the Dales.
R. F.
To be honest only visited to drop off a MP3 player for the new exhibition being installed . Its an interesting small friendly museum. It was also good to see the flicker candle units we installed years ago are still working.
J. L.
Great experience for the kids a great day indeed showing them what it was like for them 100 years ago

m. H.
Great museum well worth a visit
A.
Not too large but interesting displays of Dales life. Pay and display parking with fee deducted from admission, but pay on arrival in car park means one has to decide in advance how long one is going to stay and then keep an eye on the clock.
D. T.
Excellent displays with lots of information to read. Spent two hours meandering around without any trouble. Very good value. Save for a wet day.
s. r.
Easy to find, lots of parking, accessible to all, very helpful staff, I went in to book the little white bus to go and see the red squirrels they phoned and booked for me, you don't have to go on the bus you can drive but still have to book a parking space at the museum for the Red squirrels farm carpark, didn't go around the museum as I went for other photographic reasons in the area.
B. H.
Good museum, interesting, a bit over the top with covid precautions
J. R.

Didn't go to the museum but the information centre was very helpful and provided us with maps
J. A. B.
Interesting enough, but very dated. Most of the activities when we were there were not sufficiently resourced. The children's area on the train felt ill conceived and unhygienic. However, not expensive.
R. D.
This is a very good exploration of Dales life, well worth a visit.
C. H.
