Reviews of Farfield Mill
D. S.
Lovely place to visit. The mill is a mile or two outside the beautiful little town of Sedbergh and there is a country walk from the town to the mill. Inside the mill is lots of information about the history of the building, it's owners and workers as well as live weaving demonstrations and a chance to try it out yourself. It's set over 4 floors with lift and stairs access, floors 2 and 3 were mainly work and display areas for artists and crafts people who rent space in the building. Lovely tea room/ cafe on the bottom floor serves hot and cold drinks as well as snacks, small meals and a range of homemade cakes. This can be accessed directly if you don't want to do the mill itself and just outside the door to the cafe is a picturesque view of the river that once powered the machinery. There is no charge for entering the mill but they do ask for donations.
e.
Interesting visit here - my wife is interested in crafts, so there was plenty to keep her occupied. I'm not a craftsman, but loved the building and the history of the mill. The coffee shop was good - a very decent Christmas turkey sandwich special went down well with both of us. Worth a visit. They do ask for a discretionary £5 donation instead of an entry fee - the website would only allow me to select £10 but there is a machine near the entrance.
D. B.
Peaceful craft centre in an old mill. Where better to enjoy a light breakfast with a cool breeze the sound of flowing water and the Sun breaking through . Magic 👍
K. S.
Absolutely worth a side trip or a stop. The old mill buildings alone are worth it. Historical artifacts including 300 year old loom and a big old turbine. Artist mini-galleries where you can chat to the artist. Worthy art and design-led gift shop. Spacious and airy cafe with some outdoor seating. Excellent espresso and scones.
C. O.
Bit of a hidden gem. It has really interesting exhibitions, some static and some that come and go. There is a fine range of craft outlets, with beautiful and imaginative creations (ceramics, prints, textiles, jewellery etc). Very nice cafe in the basement. Get on over there, I'd say!
d. u.
Interesting history and great as a stop off point ... the cafe was a welcome.
L. A.
Interesting textile exhibitions at the moment. Weaving taking place on the top floor. Lunched in cafe having the 'special' brie and caramelised onion toastie - loads of onion, very little brie!
E. E.
Excellent restored mill with great selection of hand crafted products
H. L.
Such an interesting place with history of the mill, working looms, demonstrations of skills, and craft products for sale. It also has a lovely cafe and toilet facilities aswell as running workshops that you have to book on for.
S. S.
Very interesting and some lovely talented people sharing their knowledge and demonstrating their skills, multiple floors but internal lift available. has reasonable car parking spaces.
T. H.
Beautifully restored working mill, now used for artists to exhibit their works, lots of woven goods, wool, wood, glass and metalwork. Great place for Xmas gifts.
C. W.
We visited on Saturday of Easter weekend. It was very quiet for what you might expect to be a busy day. The place is full of small studio like spaces and tons of arts and crafts stuff was for sale. Staff were friendly and really happy to talk to us about what they were doing. We went to the cafe too. Didn't try the food but the coffee was great.
P. H.
Lovely Art Gallery loads of interesting things.
Nice cafe on 1st floor lovely food.
G. P.
Fascinating place. Some nicely chatty people willing to talk about what they're doing in a genuinely interesting environment. Coffee and cake in the tea rooms was also very nice. Check out Gneiss Rugs.
S. S.
A very interesting visit. Bought some fab knitted items and enjoyed tea and cake in the cafe. Friendly staff.
M.
Absolutely wonderful. I always come here with my grandparents and family whenever I'm up to visit and it is always as amazing as the last time, the food is great and the hot chocolates and my go to every time. Will never not visit The Mill when I'm in Sedbergh.
T. H.
Great place to stop off for a coffee and a bite to eat. Not forgetting all the beautiful craft item on display and to purchase.
K. K.
Would never have picked to go here myself. But wife suggested a visit. What a brilliant place to visit. Kids loved it too!
J. P.
Well worth a visit, high quality local crafts people and beautiful things to buy, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs too
S. D.
It was a wonderful surprise. Met many artists who have their studios at the mill and saw some amazing creativity. Ideal example of preserving old heritage.
C. L.
We walked here from Sedbergh, and enjoyed the galleries and shop. The cafe had a limited selection of cakes.
C. B.
Great place to spend a few hours :some wonderful arts and crafts for sale, and a lovely tea room tucked away on the lowest floor. We came away with some pottery and a woollen hat, but they sold lots of jewellery, cards, wood work, small sculpture etc. I hear that the mill is in danger of closing, so do go along and support these small businesses, or consider becoming share holders!
T.
This is a truly delightful place to visit, it has become a lunchtime regular every week.
The tea room is without doubt the best place to eat in and around Sedbergh. The quality of the food is amazing with the superb tray bakes a particular favourite and with great coffee to round it all off.
J. T.
I have now taken part in two of the art classes put on here. I thoroughly enjoyed both days and was really pleased with what I created. I had lunch in the tea room on both days which was lovely.
S. R.
Had a lovely afternoon here. Lots of interesting and beautiful things to look at and buy.
D. S.
Very interesting being able to talk to the various artists and makers, cafe OK too.
J. D.
If you are near Cumbria/North Yorkshire border at Sedburgh take a look free to enter but give a donation as it's a charity, if there are weavers in residence for the day an added bonus.
R. M.
Unique space with many crafts on display
S. J.
I love browsing around this place. Great local craft
S.
Lovely place to visit if you are interested in arts and crafts. Interesting history of the mill on display. Nice cafe on site. Over 4 floors with lift. Parking area can be a bit muddy in places. Free entry and free parking donations welcome.
A. H.
Very interesting historical walk through the mill. Need deep pockets, though, for much of the wonderful craft goods on sale. The display of impressive local craft and arts for sale; and the many workshops operating is outstanding. We'll worth the visit. It has a tea room, but we didn't use it.
D. V.
Just wonderful. Lovely setting and so much talent on display.
S. H.
Fabulous place. A wide variety of art work on display and for sale plus studios where craft workers can explain their processes. Excellent cafe.
J. W.
A fascinating restored old mill, a museum which depicts well the lives of millers. Working demonstrations and a good café.
E. S.
Absolutely stunning scenery around the mill and it is so interesting lots to look at and read about the mill. The cafe was lovely very nice food great prices and you can sit outside overlooking the brook listening to the birds and water. It was a little bit of heaven on earth to be honest.
F. E.
Having last visited Farfield many years ago and felt mildly disappointed by the experience, I was thrilled to see how much it has improved.
Now it exudes a vibrant, energised and exciting air thanks to the creative pieces on display and the fascinating archive materials around the building.
Wonderful too to see various crafts actually being carried out rather than merely being demonstrated.
All in all an uplifting morning: a glorious resurgence.
A. H.
Visited the cafe, & had a look around the mill exhibits. Popped into the shop. Lovely. Didn't have much time but would definitely revisit when I have more time
S. C.
Fabulous place for artists to work and sell. Great gift shop
D. W.
An old water mill with a variety of the looms and ancillary machinery, café and shop. A gem off the beaten track. Definitely worth a visit, we are planning on making it much longer next time.
I. T.
Brilliant lady on meet and greet reception.
Beautiful place, lots to discover, beautiful crafter. Excellent food in cafe too.
P. T.
Always a fascinating place. Good coffee, varied art , artists s spaces displaying completed work as well as work on progress changing displays.
E. C.
When people say “hidden gem” I’m pretty sceptical but this genuinely is. You don’t come here for a bargain, but lots of handmade arty things from resident artists. Love how the old industrial building has been maintained and repurposed, very impressive. And much bigger than we expected
C. G.
Well layed out, friendly and helpful staff. Lovely little craft workshops. Beautiful ceramics, rag rugs, jewelry, woven items and much more. Could have spent a fortune. Art exhibition and tea room.
J. J.
Weaving, paintings, ceramics and hand made goods. Also a tea room selling lovely cakes and light lunches.
d. f.
Wide variety of crafts and artists in residence, lovely setting and goog tea room
T. D.
Really lovely place to visit, Very friendly and helpful staff and gorgeous food at the cafe. Can't recommend it enough.
T. S.
Great place if you like art, crafts, high quality workmanship and industrial history. Definitely worth visiting.
J. S.
A nice place to visit if you're in the area, the mill is still working and has some looms going. There are placerds describing the history and is quite informative. There is a great range of crafts and art to be purchased here from the independent artists that are based here too which if you're after a unique gift then you should definitely have a look here.
There is a cafe here which serves good homemade food and cakes and is reasonably priced. If you are planning on visiting here for the cafe then beware that although the mill is open till 4pm the cafe stops serving food at 3pm and tea and cakes stop at 3:30pm so plan accordingly. Also a note to add is that while the cafe allows dogs, they aren't allowed in the mill.
a. R.
Called into Fairfield Mill yesterday to do some Christmas shopping. Lovely selection of handmade gifts, some of them weaved in the Mill itself. Reading the interpretation in the Museum really adds to the atmosphere of the place. So important to retain the heritage of the area. Straight forward, very tasty and reasonably priced lunch. A community asset that deserves to be supported!
A. A. (.
Very interesting place to visit. Has exhibitions and loads of different crafts to buy. Very enjoyable.
G. B.
Told it was table service on going into the cafe, sat for 20 minutes waiting. Eventually went to counter to order coffee and food. 5 minutes later someone came over to asked what we wanted. Chaos reigns here. Nice place with good coffee and sandwiches though.
H. H.
Lovely friendly place. Lots of great ideas for quality gifts. Interesting workshops. Bought a rug which is perfect.
L. L.
Great range of quality shops and lovely cafe
C. J. T.
Lots of interesting things from working looms to modern art. Various independent local artists exhibiting and demonstrating their skills on site.
The tea shop has a fabulous range of sponge cakes, tray bakes, toasted tea cake, and a choice of teas, coffees, hot chocolate and chilled drinks.
Gluten free and Vegan are available on request.
l. r.
What a little treasure down a country lane, not what we were expecting, but it exceeded our expectations staff where brilliant the whole experience from the perminent exhibitions to the art gallery and workshops the whole experience was fab, worth a visit a little gem
n.
Fascinating little workshops using local products and inspiration to create beautiful objects and clothing.
Loved the café and fresh coffee all very welcoming.
Option to visit the art gallery and installations for a small charge. Easy to spend half a day here with lunch when the weather is not great.
P. W.
Nice little cafe as well as the gallery
H. J.
Beautiful crafts in a beautiful setting. Visited the ArtyBird exhibition - the work was so skillful, varied, intricate and mesmerising. We will definitely be back to visit more exhibitions in the future.
J. M.
Great cakes and coffee. Didn't have lunch but all food leaving the kitchen looked great! Lovely staff too.
The mill building is fascinating and all the crafts are of really high quality. More
a mixture of arts and crafts. All price levels from low to high, some really special pieces of work. A wonderful Greek silversmith has his workshop and gallery there. I bought an adjustable silver ring containing a beautiful druzy agate! Seek him out...he has lovely things!
G. B.
Lovely atmosphere with great service, cakes 😋😋😋 and coffee. Really enjoyed our visit and dog friendly too. All in the magical setting of a truly beautiful valley .
A. W.
Craft centre was full of very nice hand made crafts of high quality. Cafe sandwiches were very good also but expensive. Which was a shame. Lovely location but not busy. Didnt see the rest off the gallery as you had to pay to see that.
C. W.
Excellent collection of art and artists on hand to speak to. Great cafe too.
M. J.
Great place. Lots of craft things and an excellent cafe
S. I.
Lovely building with a good choice of different artworks by local artists combined with info about the mill and historical displays. Cafe is reasonable and food is nice. It's a quirky place with a lot going on but a nice place to spend an hour or 2.
P. O.
Not a bad place to spend a couple of hours on a wet day. A lot of the stuff is essentially craft fair quality at gallery prices, but there is also work by very gifted artists. In particular the quilting and felt work is brilliant and undervalued! Some of the wood carving is GCSE pass level and some of the jewellery is maybe not that good, overall someone should give them an honest evaluation of the work and it's value. The building itself is nice and the exhibition is interesting.
D. W.
A great place to visit if in the area. Regularly changing Exhibitions of high quality means you will never be bored having a look round the place. Very good value for money.
Finish off on Level 1 for an excellent feed in Weavers Cafe.
Although on 4 floors, there is brilliant access for wheelchairs with toilets on every level.
A Must Visit.
h. t.
A truly amazing place with delicious food and drinks.
S. G.
This is somewhere we stop for coffee and cakes on our way home from Lake District and a bonus today as it was an open day with extra things going on. Well worth a visit at any time and highly recommend for all the interesting exhibits to see and things to buy.
Y. K.
Lovely exhibition space for high quality local artists. Especially liked 4th floor weaving area and large peg rugs made from textile selvage.
C. M.
A popular mill selling arts and crafts made by local people. A lift is available for access to all four floors and there's toilets on all four floors.
A cafe is available selling hot drinks, soft drinks, cakes, sandwiches and toasted sandwiches.
Plenty of free parking and just a small admission fee to the building.
C. W.
Spent a couple of hours here looking around this mill, and in the tea shop. The ladies and gentleman volunteers who use the various looms were only too happy to talk about and demonstrate the different looms and describe what they were making and how they became involved. There is some beautiful work on display for sale. Somewhere to visit to buy gifts that are handmade.
A. J.
An excellent place for everyone to visit. Serious artists and Sunday painters will be delighted and inspired. The mill itself is unspoilt with a beautiful view of the river and a friendly cafe to boot.
j. b.
Lovely little place plenty of parking reasonable prices in the restaurant I had soup and it was lovely nice relaxed vibe next to the river and the staff were great
S.
Can't provide a detailed review as I turned up just before they closed.
But the Cafe makes a darn good cup of tea and the Victoria sponge was fab!
M. D.

S. T.
I have to declare a personal connection here as a friend asked me to shoot a promo video for this place, but the arts and crafts and industrial history this place has and represents is fascinating. Local artists and crafts people make this a working environment that lives and breathes enthusiasm and creativity.
N. T.

J. W.

T. B.
Crafter's delight. If you're into art, handicraft and design there should be something here for you. And the added bonus in the Covid 19 era is free entry to the mill. Browse away, enjoy refreshments in the excellent basement Cafe, observe the artisans at work who are more than happy to chat to you about their work or just pass the time of day. The products are eclectic and diverse and of high quality. As well as the merchandise you could also spend time learning about the history of Fairfield Mill and it's manufacture of cloth. Immerse yourself in this historic setting and enjoy this unique experience.

R. H.
Great place to visit. Beautiful work on show. Lovely place to eat too
R. W.
Galleries, extensive local crafts and lovely home made food at the café. Very good day out or worth a detour.
A. C.
I love this place! I live in Scotland but have family down south and always try to pop in here when driving up or down. Beautiful hand crafted work, lots of inspiration and a good cafe, what's not to like?
J. H.
We found this mill and craft centre quite by chance. It is absolutely fascinating. On the day we arrived we were told by members of staff that the mill is in danger of closing. This must not be allowed to happen, it is far too good a facility to lose.
J. P.
Some interesting things. In general, though, we found the products very similar to other products we've seen elsewhere and , to be honest, on the pricey side of reasonable. It's not often I leave any form of craft centre empty-handed : this was one of those occasions.
E. H.
Good selection of hand crafted products and information abounds about the Mill history.
l. d.
Brilliant place. Perfect if you like arts and crafts. Spent over one and a half hours there, then had a cuppa in the cafe.

A. G.
We had a lovely afternoon at the mill and my wife and I had rings made choosing the stones from a vast collection that the silversmith had for us to see.we went back the following day to collect them and we love them.the whole place has something for everyone we loved it and will visit again for sure.
J. H.
This was a most interesting place to visit. They had crafts to show how bags, lace, leather book binding and several other items were made. A fascinating place to visit
H. H.
Wonderful, talented artists here. Cafe home baked cakes and excellent coffee. Do not be put off by the scruffy exterior. Go inside and explore.
S. P.
This is basically a craft market in a converted mill. There are some historic exhibits, but it's hard to understand why one should pay any admission fee - let alone nearly £4 each - just to visit some high-priced craft shops and read static information panels. Without the admission fee it would be a good destination with a few interesting mill artefacts, but there are better things to do in the area in return for an admission fee.
C. K.
Beautiful collections made by local artisans and wonderful service in the tea room with delicious food and coffee
J. S.
Only went into the tea room today but the staff were lovely, the cake was delicious and will definitely return x

rock bottom prices on end of line garment industry threads, wools and silks. but don't expect Johnson Lewis's - this is a knitters/spinners goldmine but very basic in its presentation. not wheelchair/scooter or pushchair friendly.
