Reviews of Van Gogh - The Immersive Experience
R. K.
Great experience for art lovers and Van Gogh fans. It must be on your list, mostly because of the unique location for projection, church is just perfect for it. Comfortable seats, amazing music and sound. After projection (about 40 mins - £13) it's highly recommended to pay extra £3 for Virtual Reality experience. It's nothing for a chance to see the world with this great artist's eyes. Pictures do not bring you any close to the real magic of the projection.

Fantastic experience. Not very long. I wanted to sit and enjoy the whole experience again but got distracted by the drawing in the next room. A lot of fun and very chilled. It was nice to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy York streets to sit down and really get immersed. Fantastic experience.

This was the first time we have visited a Van Gogh experience, I've seen the advertised venues for much larger spaces, we happened to be in York and decided to go in on a whim and needed the break from walking anyway.
It was definitely a unique location for the experience being inside a church, and you could tell that it had been tailored for that purpose with the shapes of the building being used in the projections.
It was £13 per person, and the projections run for 30 minutes with two options experiences after, one an art project to colour or create your own piece (free - and as adults we still did this) and an additional £10 was another virtual thing which we didn't do.
I'd recommend this experience for any lovers of art or Van Gogh himself, I wouldn't put it at the top attractions to see in York if you have limited time
P. C.
What can I say, my friend booked this for us both and I just went along with the flow. This is one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. It's surreal I can't even begin to explain how good it was.
It's such a sensory experience words can not describe how good it is. It has lots of history about Van Gogh and when we didn't think it could get any better we did the VR experience and we'll wow.
We drove from Derby and spent the day taking in the sights and this was by far the highlight of the day. Worth the drive just to vist this experience.
U. H.
Great experience here, especially for admirers of art or Van Gogh. We watched the screening for around forty minutes, and then looked at the exhibits. Only downside is that there wasn't much to see for the price you pay. Other than that, it was a great time.
R. C.
Wow! An incredible experience. Beautifully put together and highly enjoyable. I would recommend paying an extra £3 for the 3d interactive experience too. Moving and a wonderful tribute to one if the world's greatest painters.
C. C.
Very cool, it’s just a bit of d shame that it isn’t some of his more famous works. The paintings are brought to life and move about which is very cool but the main focus seems to be on his Starry Night paintings. You have some little snippets about his life but there isn’t must. I really enjoyed it, but I was expecting more. Which isn’t there fault.
It is a little annoying that people come in and out throughout the showing but if you have a spare £12 & 30 minutes I’d say it’s worth it.
C. W.
Relaxing look at Vincent's work in a fun way. Great atmosphere. Tickets are quite a lot (13 quid each) and then there's a vr experience that's another £3 each that we didn't bother with. Worth a visit if you like van gogh and a bit of a different experience to a regular gallery.
D.
Excellent experience seeing artwork and life story of Vincent Van Gogh. There's a VR experience for extra £3. Gift shop before exit. Highly recommended
M. B.
Great experience. It is amazing to see Van Gogh’s paintings are recognised and celebrated.
The place is clean, organised and nicely put together.
Approximately 20-30mins of continuous loop of painting/story in the main nave. There’s an optional VR experience which is about 12mins. There also is a colouring section from variety of Van Gogh’s painting which you can spend time and colour and have fun. The last two sections are painting and biography printed on the wall and shop.
Good for all ages. Worth the visit.
L. B.
Visited today, paid £13 for the tickets online with an option to pay an extra £3 for a VR experience once you're in the venue, which we didn't bother with. The concept is simple you go and sit in the chapel, there's deck chairs all down the middle of it and extra seating along the back and sides, and you just sit where you like and you can move seats as much as you want. The deck chairs are a bit difficult to get in and out of and could have done with a cushion for your head. You're also allowed to take photos and videos, but I would say just get settled down and enjoy the combination of his art and the beautiful music that accompanies it, it's such a relaxing experience. It lasts around 35 mins but you can come and go as you please and I suppose if you really loved it you could watch it through again because there's nobody to tell you your times up. It's hard to do it justice in words you really have to see it for yourself how brilliantly they've done it, his paintings come to life and ripple and change along the walls, trees move, birds fly, you are indeed immersed in his paintings, and you don't have to be a fan of his art I'm not particularly, just go for the experience you won't regret it. You go on to the next part then which is the Virtual Reality part, you sit with goggles on and learn about his life but the choice is yours if you want to do it. There are information boards that give you more details about his life and paintings and then a small gift shop which was a bit disappointing not much in there really could have been better.
Y. L.
The best way to see Van Gogh’s art work. Really good experience and a must see in york. The VR experience inside was extraordinary and I enjoyed it more than the show.
d. c.
The two of us had a fantastic time. We thought the film had a bit of a convoluted narrative but the graphics were amazing. The drawing was fun and probably our favorite part, we ended up sitting drawing for an hour and a half. It was beautiful because you could see everyone's prior drawings on the wall then contribute yourself. Would highly recommend.
A. W.
I knew a few things about Van Gogh and his work before entering the immersive experience but knew much more after leaving. The experience itself mainly consists of sitting in a deckchair in the main hall of the church building while the paintings of Van Gogh are projected onto the four walls of the building. The projections have been designed very well to fit the interior of the building, vines and flowers for example 'grow' up the columns of the church, and the paintings are animated so that crows will fly across cornfields, or boats will move slowly along a river, for example. A soundtrack of gentle music and a voice over plays during the experience, which plays on a continuous loop that lasts for around 35 minutes. It's a very relaxing experience or would've been if not for the toddler whose parents seemed to think it was okay for him to run up and down the aisle of church making noises- it would've been great if staff could've had a quiet word with the parents. I would suggest that if you have a child who won't sit still and quiet throughout the show that you give it a miss for the benefit of others, it's really of no interest to small children who become restless and easily bored. After leaving the main hall there is a (optional extra for £3 in addition to the standard £13 ticket ) 3D VR headset experience where you 'walk' through a landscape experiencing some of Van Gogh's paintings, a colouring area where children and adults can colour in outlines of some of his most famous paintings or even create some artwork of your own, and finally some information boards about Van Gogh's life and work before exiting through a small gift shop. Overall an enjoyable and informative experience that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in art in general or specifically the art of Vincent Van Gogh.
S. W.
Loved this immersive experience.
Really good way to enjoy art.
Little pricey for half an hour.
£13 adults/£11 for students.
K. !.
It's a nice and relaxing immersive experience. Takes about 45minutes. The chairs have little blankets on them. Get to learn a little about Van Gogh's life.
A. B.
Nice immersive experience with Van Gogh’s most known pieces featured. Includes a recreation of his bedroom, a VR tour and a space to draw.
D. B.
Fabulous. The 30 minute presentation in the church was beautiful, so relaxing and very moving. Really enjoyed the transitions from one work of art to the next and it was very cleverly done, with the architecture of the church complementing the art and the music. £3 for the VR is a bargain - it's a fantastic, immersive experience which I'll remember for a long time. Compared to some of the rip off tourist rubbish in York, its great value and well worth it. Think I might go back and do it again!
L.
Really interesting and very atmospheric! Very nearly fell asleep actually but did really enjoy it, booked tickets online and it was safe, friendly and welcoming! The immersive experience was really fun, they have deckchairs to relax in but also normal seats to take it in with surround sound it really let's tour imagination take over!
T. B.
This was the most amazing experience, the way that the paintings seem to soak into the stonework was beautiful, really stunning effects and the ultimate was the VR part of experience. A most underappreciated artist way ahead of his time...
S. M.
It was good but not awesome. If you a real art lover then only spend money to visit it otherwise without lot of interest it might appear boring to you.
S. B.
It was the last item on our day's itenary. While it was a relaxing to watch, it was the perfect way to wind down and end the day. The information boards had a timeline of events from Van Gogh's life but it was VR experience at the end made the visit worth every penny.
A. A.
Its included in the York pass so you have to come if you got it.
The place is cool and nice, but for me the projectors light was very disturbing although i changed my seats a couple of times but it didnt help. It’s not my first time in a Van Gogh immersive experience, but i had higher hopes for this one.
T. D.
Totally imaginative experience! It really is a beautifully emotional peek into the unique mind of the brilliant artist Vincent van gogh. 💜 My daughter and I were transported into a stunning world of living paintings it is truly amazing 💫
M. A.
Awesome and totally relaxing. Pictures and videos will not donit justice. The interior of the church is transformed into a 3d movie showing van goghs works coming alive. Presentation is 45 minutes and the video repeats with a not very noticable loop, no one forces you to leave. Lawn furniture is decent, could be more comfortable, but then again it might make people stay longer. After leaving presenation area there are static displays and poster boards that describe his life. And...they have a VR experience for 3£...for 11 minutes....and it is phenomenal...seriously going to the exhibit for the vr experience alone i believe was well worth it. If you want an escape from busy York, stop by and see if they have room fro you, you will not be disappointed.
C. E.
I absolutely adored this immersive Van Gogh experience. Beautiful music paired with a light show/film of his work like I've never seen before. This was followed by a VR experience, which was fun as well. I cannot recommend this enough. If you are a fan of Van Gogh's work, you MUST see this. The pictures do not do it justice!
B. A.
Beautiful and surreal experience. Turns out Vinnie G knew his stuff.
£3 for the VR experience was a bit of a soggy brush. Should of been included in the ticket price.
P. M.
Amazing Experience! Everyone who knows Van Gogh art should come! Worth any penny!
L. D.
Positives:
• The projections are visually stunning and the accompanying music fits perfectly. Both projections and audio are clear. The transitions between the paintings in the projections are beautiful.
• The narrated Van Gogh quotes in the projections enhance the experience and are thought-provoking.
• The projections are nicely contoured to the interior architecture of the church.
• There are several kinds of seating options available - deck chairs, benches and padded chairs - which are placed around the church nave. The deck chairs are comfortable and their designs are fitting, having a print on them of Van Gogh's painting 'The Starry Night' (1889).
• After the projections, in another room there are desks set up to color coloring sheets of Van Gogh painting using the crayons provided. Although having not used Crayola crayons since being a toddler, this was very enjoyable.
• The optional VR experience is a remarkable and wonderful experience; completely worth the additional fee of £3 per person. This takes you through several Van Gogh paintings and their inspirations - e.g. 'Bedroom in Arles' (1888), 'Café Terrace at Night' (1888) and 'The Siesta' (1889-1890). The accompanying narration in Van Gogh's words completes the experience.
Negatives:
• The projections did not feel entirely immersive as there were no projections on the ceiling and the ceiling fixtures were easily visible. The top of the projection wall at the end of the church nave was noticeably cut a bit short.
• Most of the coloring crayons provided were blunt and there appeared to be no sharpener available.
L. C.
Fantastic, especially if you love Van Gogh's work, but even if you don't, it's a unique experience, worth the entry price imo.
F. R.
Lovely hour spent here.
A little disappointed that the star painting weren't up in large and only on the VR. But still enjoyed the experience very much.
Try the VR. It's a little disorientation but a great experience for an extra £3.
M. B.
Amazing experience and a really good price too.
I ended up staying and watching the whole thing twice in the end as I was that enthralled.
S. W.
Really enjoyed my visit. It felt like you are inside the paintings and the projections are amazing. The main part of the exhibit is 35 minutes but you can pay an extra £3 for a VR headset tour of where he lived & got his inspiration. There are toilets & a small gift shop.
G. H.
Great exhibition. The optional Virtual reality experience was well worth paying an extra £3 extra for.
H. M.
Fabulous experience! My husband, 3 sons (aged 6, 9 & 10 yrs) really enjoyed this. Something different to do in a lovely venue. The colour's were vibrant and our boys attention was maintained ed throughout.
Although the VR experience was a little extra to pay but totally worth it, we felt we were walking through a van gogh painting!
J. P.
What a beautiful experience this was! Paid a little extra for the 11 minutes VR experience which was awesome! Highly recommended.
J. A.
Fabulous experience, therapeutically calming. Loved the drawing and VR experience too worth paying the extra.
M. H.
It was really good and the virtual reality was really good too. The immersive side of things was a bit spoilt though by people who like the sound of their own voice. If you come here, can you please be wary that people will not shut up throughout because they seem to think that it is a social event. If you've come for a chat, find a nearby pub instead and stop ruining it for everyone else.
K. M.
Great themed pub with friendly staff and good music. The mead and ciders I tasted were lovely.
S. G.
Loved it. Very relaxing, not crowded and the art was superb.
J. M.
Amazingly captivating, art lover or not, I would highly recommend a relaxing and educating wonder. Didn’t try the VR expierence but heard it was good, we spent nearly 2 hours here. Top tip - watch the projections and then change seats and watch at a different angle
S. S. W.
Excellent exhibit. Recommend paying the extra for the vr at the end, worth every penny. Really immersive and truly magical to see where he got his inspiration from.
E. M.
Took my 6 year old granddaughter here back in March 2022 and she loved it. Since then we have bought a book with Van Gogh’s pictures in and spent time looking at them and discussing whether she thinks they are any good or not! We had the VR experience at the end which cost £3 each and it was amazing .
We were back in York yesterday 28th May and she wanted to go in again so her little brother who was with us this time could have the VR experience at the end.
I asked if we could just go straight to the VR bit at the end and miss out the show in the church and they were very accommodating, so it cost me just £3 a child and they got a go on the VR. Two happy children.
A. M.
Didn't know what to expect from this week my fiancee booked it, but it was a different experience. A showcase of his art and how it changed. Perhaps made me appreciate his art more. Fans of his would love it, and even people like me who aren't really art lovers would get something out of it I think.
J. G.
This was well worth the money. VI experience was interesting and brought pictures into the context in which they were painted.
D. G.
Loved it, also paid extra for the 3D experience at the end which was brilliant.
R. N.
Lovely, calming experience to sit through. Disappointed that there was nothing on the website to say it was unsuitable for people with mobility issues, nor did anyone at the experience tell us prior to our entrance and instead had to carry a walking frame up and down multiple sets of stairs
D. S.
Really unique and wonderful experience..the music that accompanied the images was really complimentary and was very emotive .. pluscthe VR experience was also a great additional feature and clever way to brink Van Gogh paintings to life ..
G. K.
Great experience, it wonderfully portrayed his life, very moving, virtual reality was amazing too, well worth paying the £3 extra. Definitely recommend.
C. A.
Great show and experience. 3D images exceptional along with the commentary. Venue spot on. Worth seeing if you are in the City.
T.
Wonderful experience. We went on Saturday when visiting York for a weekend and this was one of the highlights of the trip. It’s a masterpiece with beautiful music. I appreciated it more than a regular museum. The church is amazing and VR was a great experience! There is an additional charge for the VR, but it’s well worth it. Btw around the corner is a lovely french restaurant where we went to digest the Gogh experience. Also well worth it!
Z. S.
I loved it, especially the VR experience after the show. Absolutely great.
E. B.
Amazing experience especially with kids!
D. C.
I enjoyed the experience, it's amazing to be sat in the surroundings of a church with the images all around you. However as much as I enjoyed it I think it was overpriced & that will make it inaccessible to a lot of families, which is a shame. We also tried the VR experience which we had to pay an additional £3 each which I think was outrageous after having already paid £13 each. However the VR experience made the whole experience, wow it was amazing .
R. C.
Wife and daughter loved it, I'm not a big Van Gogh fan but the idea was really good.
N. D.
Absolutely fabulous experience and the VR is pretty amazing as well
E. A.
It was amazing .. totally covered the walls and floors with his paintings.
v. s.
The immersive experience is nice to relax, but the VR experience afterwards is exceptionally good, I would recommend not to skip it.
R. S.
A very unique experience highlighting the life and works of Van Gogh. Projected artworks immerse the viewer in classical artworks.
Wasn't sure what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed it.
J. P.
An interesting experience that me and my wife tried in York as it was part of the York Pass and very central. My wife especially is very interested in Van Gogh's works and life, so really appreciated seeing it in a new sort of medium. The projection work is very impressive and really does feel alive at points, and is very expertly mapped to the venue's architecture to blend with reality. That said, it wasn't *very* gripping and felt at parts like individual bits of the show were stretched out far past what was necessary just to increase the run-time a bit. But it was cozy so we didn't really mind!
The add-on VR experience was also a fun extra. The models / movement inside the experience weren't great, but the morphing of the art into the environments was done very well.
C. W.
Abs fab. Lasted around 40 mins and so restful. If you have any doubts, just go for it! Highly recommended. There is also a virtual experience you can do for £3 which I didn't do as they tend to make me feel a bit sick, but those who did it loved it.
J. B.
This was excellent. The pictures with animation & the music were very moving. I enjoyed this more than the Van Gogh museum.
P. M.
Absolutely loved this, highly recommended. And definitely do the VR, amazing experience! I could happily go back and visit again.
C. H.
The projected images and how the paintings came alive was amazing. The VR experience was really good too but was £3 extra
R. M.
The Van Gogh experience was really good, especially the VR part. I would definitely recommend it if you are interested in the arts!
W. V.
Interesting experience of presenting the art in unusual form. Highly recommended
I. A.
A 35 min powerpoint presentation of slightly animated paintings. The VR experience (for an extra 3 quid) was much more fun
S. B.
Amazing a must for all art lovers. Projected inside a church very atmospheric really draws you in and so interesting!
D. H.
Very calming, we were expecting a bit more of a story to the visuals. The VR experience was fab tho
T. “. H.
Brilliant experience and so moving. If you have the time go and take a moment to get immersed in Van Gogh art and life
L. H.
A must-visit for people who like Van Gogh's work. I've never experienced anything quite like it before.
M. X.
Amazing! 10 out of 10.
"If you love nature you will find beauty everywhere".
A. S.
An incredible experience I had heard of but never seen you have to be able to appreciate his art to truly see how prolific he was
K. W.
Spent a lovely hour in the Van Gogh experience. So relaxing watching his paintings moving across the church walls. I would also highly recommend paying the £3 at the end to do the additional experience, you won’t regret it!
M. F.
It is completely different and original. I would describe it as relaxing, insightful and original. The VR option is wonderful and only for £3.
S. R.
Really interesting experience.
Would highly recommend even non art lovers will enjoy the swirling art of Van Gogh.
J. B.
A very interesting concept done in a small area, we didn't do the VR experience but the general piece is rather amazingly well done. This exhibition reminds me of film which was done in recently.
K. G.
Pleasantly surprised. Some parts of the 35min show are slower, but hold out. It gets better! Enjoyed the unique experience. Nice little touch at the end as there is a colouring station with Van Gogh art work to do and project onto a screen.
G. H.
I wanted to love this so much but left a bit underwhelmed. The sound isn't great and the surface of the walls does not enhance the pictures. Rather annoying there's a light that shines on the back wall which felt like it was shining in my face for the duration. Having paid £14 each, felt it was a bit cheeky to then ask for another £3 for the VR experience. Glad I've done it but wouldn't do it again.
L. F.
Bloody bloody brilliant. A bit expensive but got to say, really worth it
H. P.
Exciting sight and sound experience.
H. B.
A completely different way of experiencing art. Maybe not for connoisseurs of Van Gogh but for me it was interesting, quite moving, and a wonderful way of introducing older children to fine art. I particularly enjoyed the virtual reality experience which cost an extra £3.00 per person.
B. S.
OMG the most amazing, the use of projections adding a gentle movement and lighting to make the projections life like.
The 3D VR towards the exit is a MUST for £3 you will thank me, it will astound you and hang with you for the rest of the day.
IT IS A MUST DON'T MISS IT.
One for the most memorable moments of the day.
J. L.
Very good - it probably deserves 5 stars. Be careful where you sit as in some positions you can be dazzled by projection lamps. It takes a little while to settle in to the feel of the presentation with its images (some animated) and text presented in different ways. If it's not crowded it would be worth staying for a second watching if allowed. The optional extra VR experience (£3 at the York presentation) is worth it but I found that the headsets were best without glasses.
R. P.
We were not expecting too much at this event but it was fantastic. The projections were fascinating and beautiful and gave some real insight into Van Gogh's painting and life in a very accessible way. Combined with the subtle commentary it was quite insightful and emotional. The VR experience was really amazing and you don't want to miss that part. Don't worry about the extra £3. Best money you will ever spend. Highly reccomended.
A. D. L.
It was an immersive experience in Van Gogh life, really enjoyed it.
L. M.
Loved the experience. So colourful and a great representation of his art.
T. W.
Beautiful show. The music made me quite emotional. Try to find a seat in the center as lots to see on all 4 walls and can hurt your neck a bit sitting to the side. Absolutely loved the experience. There is a extra 3D VR experience at the end( extra £3) but it is fantastic. You begin in Van Gogh's room and float your way through France via many spots where his paintings took place. You end up viewing the starry night which is just fabulous!
Highly recommend, even if you don't know much about the painter.
J. J.
Fantastic experience. Really relaxing. The architecture of the church combined with the paintings projected onto the shape of the building really complimented each other.
H. D.
Really good, incredibly well presented. Loved the VR. Would.visit again.
W. E.
Truly awesome. VR not to be missed, it really is like being in Van Gogh's paintings
P. d.
I wasn't really sure what to expect but was so pleasantly suprised. it was amazing. It was beautiful. it came to life and was exciting yet at the same time so relaxing. It was very moving. You need to look everwhere to catch everything, there is so much going on. The VR experience is not to be missed. Even whilst watching I could hear other peoples gasps and "wows".
Overall it is an experience I am so happy I had. The price is ridiculously cheap for an hour or so of total magic. I think Mr. Van Gogh would have greatly approved. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
J. M. F.
OMG! To be immersed in the beauty of the art of Van Gogh was surreal like I think of an out of body experience! So relaxing and it's put together so cleverly. Thanks to all involved- everyone who can dorks take this 40 min or so out of their day . Everyday!
E. P.
Fascinating experience especially the virtual reality part though felt a bit dizzy for a few mins afterwards.
F. C.
Who loves history of art, paintings and Van Gogh's life it's amazing experience.
L. R.
Great immersive experience! Don't miss the opportunity to see the 3D viewing! It's a must!!
C. S.
Amazing!!!! The whole experience was very nice, specially the virtual reality one.
D. S.
Not a Van Gogh fan really, but this seemed a good way to experience his art in a different way. The projection work is very clever, with great use of the church structure, pictures blending from one to another. The VR experience is superb, a walk through the landscape of his pictures. Don't do the VR but if you get very travel sick (as my wife does). Overall and excellent experience.
S. E.
Honestly I wasn’t expecting this to be as good as it was. It was amazing probably my favorite part of my trip to York!! The 360 visuals are amazing, you fully get immersed into the experience and it’s so beautiful. I can honestly say I understand why people love art so much now. The way this was all put together and the location was all so perfect! Even had starry night deck chairs which was pretty cool. I’d recommend this to anyone and would have stayed to watch again if I didn’t have to check out of my hotel! 5* amazing experience! I felt so at peace and relaxed here.
X. M.
Definitely worth experiencing, the wonderfully choreographed 30min-ish looped 360° animation in the main hall is spectacular, blending insightful quotes from Van High to an atmospheric soundtrack and blends incredibly well with the church architecture. The VR tour is also amazing, definitely worth experiencing.
T. M.
Not too impressed by the initial light show, which dragged on too long, and seemed muddled and repetitive. Fantastic 3D goggles experience. And a good display of info and images to finish.
S. A.
It is a bit confusing what this "experience" is supposed to be. Some nice music and lots of moving colour based on Van Gogh's works but I didn't learn much about Van Gogh from the few words displayed and recited, there was more in the information section after the "experience". The display was on a 35 minute loop but long periods passed without much happening, giving the impression that it had been drawn out to fill the time. We won't be back.
S. J.
Nice way of showing Van Gogh paintings. Some slides stayed on a little too long and the same music. Beautifully done with moving 3d paintings.
If it had followed his life through his paintings more it would have been great
S.
Really enjoyed the VIP Virtual Reality Experience which cost an extra £3.00 per person. Due to covid 19 we requested the cloth protection which go around your eyes. Recommended.
R. L.
Loved this display glad I read reviews advising to pay the extra £3 for the vr experience definitely worth it
K. L.
Great experience, especially the VR!
J. B.
Loved it so different from the normal. The VR experience was well worth it. But would have preferred it to be included in the price as some people will have missed out.
M. K.
Didn't visit finally. The front office rep explained the experience which sounded a bit inconsistent with the atmosphere of the painter's paintings. It would make sense if it was based on augmented reality, but it is on projections on the mediaeval church's walls. It doesn't transfer the atmosphere of van Gogh's intentions I'm afraid.
M. W.
Absolutely fantastic, brought my wife to tears, beautiful
K. J.
A little disappointed with no access to upstairs. Staff very helpful, given a leaflet explaining.
Definitely a must see for any art buff. A great show, very colourful.
D. L.
If you're a fan of Van Gogh then this is definitely for you. If you're not such a fan, go anyway, I'm pretty sure you will be by the time you leave.
The immersive graphics are amazing and the whole experience is complimented by the accompanying soundtrack. I will definitely be going again.
N. M.
Could have been better .. VR should have been included in price .. information a bit superficial .. would struggle to recommend it
B. W.
Great experience!!! Especially with the AR you can pay extra £3 to do.
L. T.
Great for taking a nap. Paid for an hour but it's a 30 minute loop 😬. Would rather they charged £10 and it was the hour but included the VR
G. R.
An impressive way of presenting the work of a truely brilliant artist of his time. You physically feel a sadness, during the presentation, that he died so young. Check out the virtual reality section, absolutely excellent.
A. H.
Wow this was fantastic. A friend recommended this to me and I would definitely recommend. It was beautifully presented and mesmerising. Deck chairs and seating provided were really comfortable. You get totally immersed. Staff were really friendly. Really enjoyed this.
A. M.
Have to admit I didn't know what to expect especially with an 8yr old to entertain. I was really pleasantly surprised. The exhibit is calming and relaxing away from the busy streets outside. The music is enchanting and the art work brought to life. As you can see we both took part in the creative session and my daughter enjoyed the oculus vr life journey.
C. B.
Not sure when i walked in, but was actually amazing.
Very worth it.
D. B.
So cool. The VR add on half way through was 300% worth it! A. Mazing.
Q. V.
I loved it, so relaxing and beautiful. It really is quite moving.
The virtual reality goggles are worth the extra £3 after the show - amazing.
S. R.
Highly recommend this, it's so inspiring and moving. Beautifully done guys!
E. H.
Fabulous and clever. A most enjoyable and relaxing experience. Highly recommended.
K. P. B.
Hard experience for a child but i really enjoyed it. Thought it was a walk through experience but its a sitting 30 min experience where the art is projected onto the walls of the room.
Even though it wasnt what i perceived it to be i still enjoyed it
There was colouring at the end and the VR experience was well worth it
Wasnt sure my 6 year old would sit through the VR so they let him try it without paying to see if he would
He did and we paid at the end
H. B.
Deffos recommend the vr , was really clever. Love Van Gogh paintings, granted I don’t know every in and out about the bloke, but even for someone who sorts of knows roughly about him, it’s really interesting and beautiful.
Y. H.
This was a very good experience. Double seats down the middle of the Church facing the Altar and deckchairs around the edge. The very well produced and immersive video plays across each wall and on occasions from the floor. It can be seen from every angle, so make sure to look around often. Paintings from Van Gogh's life appear all over the walls to tell a story in his own words with subtle animations added to bring some paintings to life... Accompanied by a strong and evocative soundtrack. This was a good experience. When you have seen that (30 mins) you can wander through to the gallery to view more traditional infographics about the painter and then to a gift shop...
J. G.
My partner and I had a fantastic time here. As an individual who is not particularly into art, it was incredibly engaging and really brought his works to life. I genuinely feel that I now have a new appreciation for Van Gogh's work. Definitely worth a visit!
J. H.
Great show even if you are not a Van Gogh fan. The show is a sensual experience, special effects are amazing!
G. G.
A poetic dip into Van Gogh's universe, most welcome break from the outside madness
G. H.
Very interesting take on Van Gogh. The initial experience is heavily dependent on where you are sitting in the auditorium. The VR experience is a delight, well worth the extra £3.
M. K.
Very nice experience. Van Gogh’s work has always appeared very alive to me so I really enjoyed how it morphed and animated around the church. VR I would also recommend but made me feel a little nauseated as I’m not used to the display.. leaving into the dark evening and at first I felt like I could still see the world in the same way that the master impressionist painted it.
Would go again.
B. J.
Interesting and very soothing, lasts about 35 mins but you watch over.
The music played over the exibition was very good
K. S.
A bit not organised, just go in and sit. No structure of the presentation itself, hard to understand when it starts and when it finishes. Show was quite nice but there are people talking around so you can't really relax. VR should be included in the price, let's be honest. No immersion when you are trying to focus and staff speaks loudly around. This should area should be more isolated.
N. v.
Loved this exhibition. Perfect setup with relaxing deck chairs. Do not miss the VR experience at the end, even better than the 1st part. Well worth the money.
C. E.
Came to york mainly for this exhibition and can easily say it was delightful, very emotional but also enlightened onto his work and managed to bring it to life, also highly recommend the VR afterwards having never done it was before i loved it, would say the giftshop needs more though, i really wanted a cool tote bag
M. H.
The 30 minute video talk was interesting and very relaxing but bit disappointing that was small you paid for. The additional VR experience was an added fee. Just didn't think it was worth the money paid.
T. G.
What an amazing experience. Even if your not a fan of Van Gogh...go! It's fantastic. The VR tour was out of this world!
c. l.
Absolutely wonderful, well done to everybody who has created this beautiful experience. Well worth paying the extra £3 for the VR experience, it's incredible!
D. T.
Fine but not worth the £13 per person
J. J.
Really amazing and beautiful, loved every minute of it. The extra virtual reality exhibition is fabulous and well worth the extra £3 charge. Would definitely recommend a visit.
M. S.
Absolutely brilliant experience! A fantastic way to appreciate the nuances of Van Gogh's work. The VR experience is well worth the additional expense.
T. F.
The VR experience is worth adding to the immersive display.
P. J.
Absolutely marvellous, a most joyous experience. The virtual reality is something you should not miss. I thoroughly recommend this, it's worth every penny.
G. I.
Having the exhibition in a church was such a great decision! It was absolutley breathtaking and touching! If you are in York it is definietly worth to visit.
g. c.
Amazing wow!! Loved it and lasted an hour
J. T.
Something different for lovers of Van Gogh. Great to be able to see everything while sitting down! I definitely recommend paying extra for the VR, it's great.
C. M.
An incredible experience for those who care for Van Gogh. Can recommend the VR experience as well. Also felt safe with the Covid restrictions in place, staff were very helpful.
S. C.
A must do visit. Paying an extra £3 for the virtual tour was especially well worth it.
D. L.
Just wow! Recommend if you are into art you experience this also the VR experience was great!
白.
Special effects were pretty cool but not much Information was given.
C. N.
Really well thought out exhibition. Ideal to relax and immerse yourself after a busy day. We all really loved the music soundtrack and wished it was available for purchase. Took my toddler who loved the colours and shapes. A lovely family experience.
L. B.
Very clever & different experience. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't learn anything about van gogh throughout the digital experience, there were just 3 boards for you to read as you walk through to the gift shop.
G. M.
A hidden gem in York.
We booked this last minute.
So glad we did.
Very chilled out experience of the genius of Van Gogh.
Highly recommended
D. G.
I would highly recommend the Van Gogh experience! I have learned a lot about the artist's life in a very enjoyable manner.
R. O.
One of the most magical and enjoyable experiences I have had in a very long time. My friend and I sat through the whole thing twice and were reluctant to leave even then. The music was beautiful and the ever changing artwork was stunning. A truly memorable hour.
A. H.
Excellent projections of animated Van Gogh paintings, followed by a VR walk which was amazing. Not good for people who have difficulty with stairs.
J. H.
Beautifully done! The art work is projected all around you. Calming music & soft voice over. You can even colour in your own masterpiece ✨ 🌻🌻
G. S.
A different experience in both sides
J. L.
Overrated. It's not 360 degree immersive experience. It's a different projector on each side repeating the same videos in turns. Good experience though. VR experience is worth more than the exhibition.
M. H.
Won't be everyone's cup of tea but my wife and myself really enjoyed it. Did not try the VR option afterwards but that didn't spoil the experience.
C.
Wonderful experience, I went with my 9 and 12 year old and they loved it too.
L. F.
Slightly different to what we expected but great experience and I learnt a lot about his work that I never knew before. The VR I had never done before either so that was interesting!
M. C.
Considering the timing of my visit shortly after exhibitions like this were allowed to reopen again following COVID-19 restrictions I was incredibly impressed with how organised it was and how safe everything felt.
The staff were incredibly friendly and the exhibition itself is very well put together with selected Van Gogh's works projection mapped onto the interior of the church with music and speech to accompany them as they move and flow around your deckchair.
The show takes around 30-35 minutes and you can then move on to the optional £3 VR experience. I suspect this is more enjoyable out of a pandemic situation when a shower cap and eye cover isn't required. With the mandatory face mask, these items, the VR headset and headphones on its quite overwhelming to get prepared. Once the experience began I quickly realised it was blurred, unsure if I should have kept my glasses in, if the headset wasn't quite right orif it had steamed up but regardless of this it was impressive even if it lacked some sharpness.
It's odd to sit on a chair in a room with no vision or hearing and knowing other members of the public can see you spinning around but well worth the potential humiliation 😂
All in all I'm glad I did it, it's well done and a fantastic experience, just a shame the VR wasn't quite 100%.
R. H.
A beautiful, relaxing, immersive experience. The VR was an incredible addition....definitely a must for your visit!
n. h.
Some bits better than others. Whole room immersive Van Gogh pictures best. Probably not worth the £13 entrance fee.
G.
It was bloody great. I was a little skeptical at first even though I love Van Gough's work a immersive experience sounded silly but 5 minutes in I was mesmerised and absolutely loved it
C. G.
Beautiful, not many people so I was able to see it twice. Really well done, relaxing and enjoyable. I was by myself it's something you can easily do. I want one of the deckchairs! Good social distancing, nice staff
N. B.
A bit disappointed but was still good. The set up could be much better, and sure I would have taken the vr experience if I knew you could upgrade.
R. G.
Lovely very interesting and definitely worth visiting
L. M.
Brilliant and mesmerising. The effects and projections were stunning and the animations beautiful. A very good show of van gogh's life and work. The VR is amazing too. Very covid safe and good value.
D. T.
I learned a lot while losing myself in the beauty of Van Gogh's work. I really enjoyed the vr experience and would recommend it as an extra part of the visit
L. f.
How wondeful, so interesting and relaxing, it really opened the mind.
K. L.
Great way to experience Vincent Van Gogh's masterpieces in a great projected light show that makes full use of the venue's architecture.
D. B.
Great experience which is well worth a visit if you enjoy arty things. The virtual reality add on is well worth it too
L. U.
This place was AMAZING!!! I'm not a huge fan of his work but this was so well done I found myself nearly crying as his story is so moving. If you're near here you should definitely visit.
M. H.
Great experience. Slightly expensive but definitely worth it and I would highly recommend doing the 3D visual experience at the end
R. F.
Excellent.. add the £3 for the VR experience well worth it. What a lad Vinnie was
L. G.
Absolutely brilliant, well worth the trip, been to Amsterdam and visited the Van Gogh museum, this was a perfect little reminisce x
D. C.
Really good experience. Wonderfully done. Great VR and drawing for kids on top of the main masterpiece
D. K.
Awesome!
S. H.
Interesting Interpretation of VG's work. Worth doing the VR extra bit about Arles... That made the whole thing worthwhile!
l. M.
Beautiful, breathtaking experience
J. F.
It's very chill, the projections all over the walls look fab, more of a sit down and just watch attraction though
T. G.
Speaking as a professional sound engineer I did feel the sound of this installation was very lacking. They could have done so much more.
L. M.
Very unique experience and enjoyable even if you don't like art or Van Gogh
M.
Amazing experience and very well organized.i highly recommend
A. B.
Amazing experience. We sat through it twice and the VR was incredible too. Not to be missed....
T. C.
Great presentation of Van Gogh's paintings
S. C.
This was an excellent 'immersive experience'! If you like the work of Van Gogh, you will enjoy this!
J. L.
Very beautiful half hour animated immersive film but little else.
R. B.
Nice experience but not worth the entrance fee. We were told we could enjoy the experience at our leisure but were then rushed on to the next part of the experience, where you could colour with broken stubby crayons. Shame.
P. T.
A church with deck chairs. Perfect
L. H.
Wonderful experience! Very atmospheric and informative.
D. T.
A very impressive display of Van Gogh's works...the VR experience afterwards is a must!
C. V.
A great experience. Didn't know quite what to expect but it was well done and well worth going to, especially the VR experience.
J. H.
Very impressed
G. G.
Fantastic show that enabled you to see the world through Vincent's eyes. Really emotional. I'll be back soon.
P. D.
This was just awesome. Find a seat. Sit back and be immersed in the artwork. Best experienced in the corner of the room for the best view.
R. F.
This was a unusual experience much better then actually looking at a painting. Van Gogh takes us through his life.
C.
Very slow at times. Think it would be improved if it was half the price and there was some narration about the life of Van Gogh
C. C.
Very good. Liked the way the paintings were brought to life and projected on the walls.
a. s.
Such a cool experience, wasn't sure what to expect but this outdid it, left feeling educated and inspired, fun for all ages, will be recommending to others
P. K.
Very good. The children enjoyed it, I was a bit worried they would get bored, but happily watched the whole show.
D. C.
Didn't really know what to expect but it was so good. The VR especially was amazing!
L. B.
Absolutely loved it especially the VR visit to Arles, would highly recommend.
P. C.
Amazing!!! Even if you are not a big fan of arts, you will enjoy it! Definetely try the VR at the end!!!
B. G.
Fantastic experience. Highly recommend paying the 3£ for the VR thing too!
M. C.
A lovely little interactive experience to Van Gogh’s work but expected more then the exhibit seem to show.
S. F.
Great immersive experience using van Gogh's paintings projected on the church walls and music.
j. h.
I went with my wife and ended up asking could we stay for another half hour as the visual and musical experience was so engaging and restful. Mesmerising is the word that springs to mind.
S. F.
Excellent. Well worth the visit. The VR experience was well worth the extra £3.
T. P. F. W. W.
Nice opportunity to enjoy the works of art of Vincent Van Gogh come to life in an immersive experience that even non experts can enjoy, with projection mapping,, relaxing music and storytelling
R. T.
Really interesting experience, great customer service. Almost like a meditation watching all the pictures and sounds.
A. D.
Very relaxing and interesting but one of my daughter's got bored so it is not for everyone.
K. R.
Definitely recommend - the exhibition is so pretty but also really informative
J. C.
Great exhibition, definately do the extra VR experience, extra cost but really worth it.
C. B.
Really interesting. Lots of information and visual effects are brilliant. VR is worth paying for.
K. K.
Stunning. Not to be missed. Especially the virtual reality experience. Highlight of 2021 for me.
s. r.
What an amazing exhibition. Definitely worth a visit. VR experience is mind blowing too. Even if your not an art lover the experience and technology is worth it. Would visit again
H. G.
Beautiful experience especially the virtual reality.. you feel you are living within that environment and you put your hand out to touch things. Definitely worth going for.
J. P. K.
Orate but did find the VR experience at the end (an extra £3) the highlight and probably more informative.
L. M.
It's a beautiful way to see art, it comes to life and moves, for all ages wither you love art or not..
A. T.
Superb experience. Well worth the VR experience afterwards too. Highly recommend
C. W.
I loved this! Such a different way to look at the art and a good sit down in the middle of a busy day site seeing
C.
Very immersive experience the show takes you out of the building and into the world of Vincent Van Gogh.
D. U.
Interesting and good but overpriced for the amount of time spent there. Additional virtual reality was extra and not included in the price.
M. W.
Its a velcro experience...a bit of a rip off
J. G.
Strange but enjoyable experience. Never been to anything like this before. Loved the location. The church was awesome.
B. N.
Amazing , well worth it. Make sure you do the VR at the end
D. s.

Stumbled across this in York. It was a very different experience but still rather good
V. M.
(Translated) An absolutely amazing experience! Van Gogh is one of my favorite painters, his colorful art captivates me, without a doubt this exhibition has been magical, his works of art come to life and the background music relaxes you, catches you and inadvertently immerses you in the fantastic world of Van Gogh. I missed this exhibition in my home country, Peru. How generous is life that on a walk through York with my dear husband, I found this 360-degree immersive artistic experience. [I will keep it in my ❣️y 🧠 until the end of my days]
