Reviews of York Castle Museum
S. S.
A fabulous trip back in time! Spent about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring this fantastic museum, with so much to see and learn.
Hopefully the images show you a good overview of what’s to see.
Good for families too
Car park nearby, toilets, cafe, and shop.
We especially loved the Victorian Street with sounds and even Smell!
The museum is in two parts, all easy walking.
If your in York, this is a must visit.
Tickets also last one year.
H. T. (. X.
Museum is well kept and all the notice boards are well maintained and full of interesting facts. The reconstructed street scene is amazing with lots of period shops. The prison has amazing graffiti. Kept my 5 year old entertained for 2 hours so would keep older kids or adults interested for much longer. Toilets are frequent/central and well maintained. Worth the entry fee definitely.
C. B.
This place is awesome. So much to see, I think we spent about 2-3 hours here. The best hit for me was the prison and being able to go in cells of people like Duck Turpin. The Victorian street was good though, the smells and sounds were so realistic. Not expensive to enter and ticket is valid for a year so why wouldn’t you. Cafe here and a shop. Really is worth a visit, kids would love it.

We visited the museum today (Saturday afternoon)
If we'd known how big it was, we'd have planned our day better. Be aware its only open 11-4.
The exhibitions are fantastic, it is definitely suitable for all ages. Lots of activities and stuff for the children to do, and plenty of reading and observing for the more serious people lol. We spent an hour, as had to rush round, could easily spent 3-4 hours.
The Victorian Street was such a fantastic experience
G. B.
Absolutely amazing! One of the best museums I have visited. Very helpful and friendly ticket staff. So much to see and do. Excellent value for money. The Victorian street is amazing! Will definitely be back on our next visit to York!
S. D.
Excellent museum telling you the history of York. You can walk through a Victorian street with various rooms of the main street showing the history of the time.
The staff are all very knowledgeable and very happy to spend time telling you about how the collection was put together.
We spent 2 hours here and could have stayed Longer if we had read more of the many information boards around the displays.
I. L.
A must see. Much bigger than expected and well worth the entry fee. The lighting is very dark though so take into consideration along with uneven pathways. Lots to see and a great experience. Highly recommended
I. M.
This place is wonderful! My husband's tolerance level for museums is about one hour...we were here for almost 3 hours. It covers a wide variety of subjects, from clothing, history, a Victorian street (fantastic) and historical artifacts.
We would definitely recommend it.
R. S.
What a great place to visit, so much to see here. Your ticket lets you visit throughout the year, which is good as there's too much to see in one visit. The Christmas Victorian street was magical. Really helpful staff as well.
C. M.
So much to see, period rooms, toys, strange collections, terrifying old prison cells with talking holograms, imagine yourself in WW1 trench. Good to see part, then have a rest in cafe before seeing the rest. If you have mobility issues and you can't manage all of it as there are stairs etc, they will offer a ticket reduction. Activities for children. Small but good shop.
M. J.
Brilliant place to visit and only takes a few hours to see and read it all. Little boy loved the dress up and toy areas of the museum. At the time we visited it had WW1, fashion and body, toys, York, years gone by and prison. Good access for disabled people and car park right next door to the museum. The is a small shop and cafe too.
N. A.
Very interesting. A museum of how humans are “interesting” to be sure. Videos of PE through the ages, fashion standards that confirm how much we conform and want to impress others. For example, women during WW2 couldn’t get hose so they would dye their legs with tea and use eyeliner to draw the seam. Actual Victorian street. Great staff. Big museum built in an old prison and it showcases the medieval castle walls.
S. H.
Great value for money, perfect to take kid there to experience the old times in England. Love the real street experience, bring you back to long long time ago. Love it. Worth to visit.
T. C.
Fantastic museum to visit. You need to allow a good 3 hours to go round it all.
The victorian cobbled Street was amazing. Loved the way its all set out, a real feel of victorian life.
There are quizzes and things for children to keep them entertained to.
Very informative, takes you through the decades, very nostalgic.
Nice little souvenir shop which is reasonably priced. Then you can grab a coffee and cake in the little cafe.
G. N.
Very nice museum. Plenty read walking round. Found the war exhibition very intresting and was impressed with the original street put inside. Highly recommended and we will be using the free 12 month return later this year.
J.
Visited the castle museum during my visit, I was not disappointed there was a lot of things I was not aware of. I really learned a lot on my visit if you like history you will not be disappointed, I recommend you book in advance as it can get busy from just walking in. Staff are friendly to, I believe some attractions aren't open there at the moment I'm not sure because of covid or matainence issue.
J.
Arrival , a short queue for unbooked tickets, a staff member standing there. He didn't ask if we had tickets or not,we had to ask him, we had pre booked. Then he said "well don't go past me without proving it" he hadn't asked to see before that, I know you are all volunteers but customer service is important.
Once in though the museum is just fantastic. So much to see. It's pretty much in two halves, we are glad the ticket covers a year because we have to return to do 'sixties' side and prison also the mill
It's an amazing collection of artefacts in a historical setting
The guide in the Victorian street was very friendly and knowledgeable, doing a talk there was only us two there but he gave us so much information.
Small souvenir shop, but they had my fridge magnet.
Cafe looks good but we ran out of time...those of limited mobility would be able to access street scene but other areas are up and down stairs, prison end has a lift
Definitely returning here as soon as we can.
M. M.
To me it’s the best museum of York. It is very interesting and very well decorated. Specifically the Victorian streets area… I was the happiest girl ever to wander around. And the fact that you can enter inside some shops is fantastic. I had the best time there!
B. L.
Well worth entry fee and could have spent all day here. Would be excellent for children, staff are very knowledgeable and the variety of displays shows life throughout the ages in a very interactive way.
R. G.
Enjoyable free if you are on UC... Not all areas are accessible to wheelchairs etc, but you get a reduced price for that too... The staff are very knowledgeable and are happy to tell you history of exhibits etc
P. C.
A great afternoon here. Very educational and reminded us of so many things we've had in the past. Best to book before going as avoid any queing.
C.
An amazing place to visit, fantastic desk staff, so welcoming. The museum takes you through the ages, the historical artifacts are amazingly recreated in displays depicting the era.
Kirkgate was definitely our favourite, hunting for fire marks, as we passed the shops.
The prison section is eerie, and very informative.
We've visited twice now- first visit took 3 and a bit hours, 2nd visit just short of two.
P. O.
Great museum, step back in time, victorian streets and shops are excellent, the chap in the pharmacy really knew his stuff, explaining the medicines used in the old days with a passion for the subject. Lots of good exhibits, thoroughly enjoyable visit.
S. G.
First time visiting York castle museum and we were really pleased we did. There was no wait to enter, we were greeted by a very lovely lady who gave us all the information we needed to start the tour around the museum.
It was really fun to see different room set ups. One in the 60s-80s era reminded my mum of her grandmothers living room! The toy section was very interactive for children, we enjoyed solving the clues.
The bricks experience was a great addition for the Easter break.
Overall well worth the ticket price, lots for children to see, learn and play. As well as adults experiencing the sights, sounds and atmosphere on the victorian street.
Can't wait to return!
P. B.
Really good day out for the family.
First class museum with so much to see and do within it.
Would highly recommend going
C.
One of the best and varied museums in the UK. From an immersive Victorian English Street, to your favourite childhood toys and a standout exhibition where you can follow the lives of particular individuals throughout WW1. In fact we enjoyed it so much we unfortunately missed the two big exhibitions on the 1960s and the prisons, after spending a few hours at the museum already.
K. E.
Gr8 work! V interesting. Only thing, a bit higher volume on some exhibits is all. Thank you for a gr8 few hours.
V. B.
Could have spent another hour there! But, we'd booked for elsewhere and had to leave after 2hours. Lots of interactive things along the way. Had to rush the prison at the end which was a shame, definitely worthwhile. Didn't realise how much was in the 2nd part. Great for all ages.
M. G.
Amazing place to visit, step through time from the Romans up to the 60s, the Victorian Street gives a real insight in to how they lived back then. I highly recommend a visit.
S. A. G.
We visited last week and we are not normally museum goers, but this was a lot of fun.
There is so much to see and learn about what life used to be like.
We also got to walk around genuine jail cells, very spooky!
I would definitely return.
c. s.
Brilliant day out. Very good experience through the ages. Loved walking down the victorian street 👍👍
c.
By far one of the best museum experiences I've ever had, it really involves you into the history instead of just simply reading about it and looking at some photos or artifacts. A lot of it was quite interactive with many different history eras to learn about and even try and experince yourself.
It shows you fashion, toys, streets, food and lifestyle, body image, womens history, York's history and war. You feel emotional seeing what the past was like and even has points where you can write your opinion on certain areas.
Without spoiling too much of the experince I won't explain everything you can do, but definitely the main event was the rebuilt victorian street of York where you can walk around this street in York but completely back in time! You really feel like you're in that era with staff members dressed like back then and sounds to make you feel like you're actually there! Definitely recommend visiting this museum, definitely worth the money.
S. C.
Very cool experience, definitely worth getting the annual ticket as it's quite big to explore in just one day
S. D.
We didn't book in advance I'd suggest you do if thinking of a visit. We did finally get in after a large queue had formed.
It was worthwhile we thoroughly enjoyed it informative and interesting I would recommend a visit. However I must just add the photograph being show when searching for the museum is incorrect. The picture shown is of Yorks courthouse!!
S. P.
A must visit when in York. It's like going back in time. So much effort to maintain.
Time spent- 3hrs
J. P.
A hidden gem. Although a slight eclectic mix of exhibitions it's enthralling.
The reconstruction Street is stunning and there is so much to explore
n. c.
😁I didn't get chance to look around from inside..because of the timing.. but heard from friends that it's very Beautiful and amazing from inside.. Will definitely go next time and I will post the pictures from inside 🌟🤗👍
C. H.
Fantastic, well set out, and well organised place to take the family.A good 2- 2.5 hours spent absorbing history.
Museum shop a bit pricey, but aren't they always.😀
A. L. C.
Brilliant day out! Such an incredible place to learn about past events! Only down side a little be crowded in certain places and chaotic in the smaller exhibits.
T. B.
TARDIS. Unexpectedly large with plenty to see. Loved the victorian street and shops, also the 1914 exhibition. Worth the money, would definitely reccomend.
D. G.
A great museum covering the history of York. The Victorian-era recreation of the city is particularly interesting.
G. H.
Another great place to visit in York. Turned up today 29/9/21, hadn't pre booked a ticket but staff were most helpful in getting me a time slot at 1pm which was great for myself.
In all a great attraction to visit you can definitely spend a good 2 hours plus here look around
E. W.
Wow. What a fantastic day out. So worth the entry fee. We spent over 2hrs here.
A. G.
Had a great time here , would recommend lots to see . And you can go back as many times as you like on your payment
E. A.
Had a great time losing some hours in this excellent museum. The Victorian Street really is a highlight. A lovely way to display some fascinating pieces (be prepared for the immersive horse wee smell!) and I loved seeing the dedicated staff in victorian costume.
The "Shaping the Body" exhibition was of particular interest to me and they have some superb pieces of historical fashion for those fascinated by that sort of thing. There's also a 60's exhibit, a collection of vintage toys, lots of info about the building itself and more.
Thank you to all the helpful and friendly staff!
I do wish there was an option to purchase a day ticket rather than an annual pass for tourists like myself. However, £13 is well worth it to visit and support this great collection!
M. I.
This is the best museum in York with lots of historical artifacts and access to the old prisons included in the admission price.
C. M.
Great place to visit. See the Victorian Street with all the shops. Visit the prisons and count yourself lucky you won't have to stay! It is a voyage through time. It is very interesting. Kids love all the exhibits. I guess for little ones it is more interactive and fascinating than 'normal' museums. I recommend a visit if you have the opportunity.
P. X.
Nice museum with a lot of things to see. Adult £14/ kid £7.
J. W.
The museum is fantastic and the staff have obviously worked very hard to create such a child-friendly environment but also interesting to all ages. Our 5 year old granddaughter was very impressed with the interactive displays and all the interesting facts about each era. The ‘street’ is fantastic and the prison is fascinating. We spent about 3 hours at the museum and it was genuinely interesting. Thank you.
B. R.
Well worth the time. As well as the 'headline' exhibition about the prison, this is also the home of a fascinating social history museum about how we have changed how we live our lives (for better and for worse) over the past 400 years.
Look out for the World War 1 and body shape/fashion galleries!
H. H.
Whilst we didn't look around the museum, we spent hours sitting on the benches outside, drawing the building. We were able to access the cafe and facilities in the museum, which was appreciated. There's a good selection of cafe snacks and independent drinks from a German lemonade brand (lovely). I'll be back someday to look around the museum; there's so much to see in York, but I think this place should be on the list.
S. J.
Fantastic, also your entry ticket lasts 12 months. Excellent value.
L.
Very informative, could be in there for hours learning. Good interactive learning for kids. Staff on the Victorian street were great at role-playing. The prisons were great as well. Also make sure to go to the riverside. Has some good benches to eat lunch and rest.
O. D.
Fantastic historic place.. Need to visit three/four times to really take it all in.. Can't wait to go again..
B. L.
Very well laid out and worth getting your walking shoes on to view it. It's an interesting overview of York through the years. Worth the money paid to enter. Worth taking some bottled water with you as there is limited air con in areas and if you attend at the height of summer (as we did), it can get warm with the crowds.
B. A.
Enthusiastic staff, straight up informationfest with some class exhibits throughout the museum.
My girlfriend got scared by Victorian policeman in the cocoa room while we were discussing important topics, hilarious.
A. P. P. Y.
I enjoyed my visit at the museum. It's nice that some exhibits are interactive and you can really immerse in that certain period in history. I particularly liked the bit about fashion and the clip comparing the lifestyle of the modern people and the Victorian era.
M. R.
Better than I remembered. I don't normally rate anything a 5 star , but the Castle Museum deserves it.
Being of a certain age I loved the 60s additions. A definite must if you are in York.
My only grouse would be the cafe could be bigger, but on a nice day there are plenty of places outside, with excellent views and space to sit and watch the World go by.
C. G.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience and well worth the money especially as the ticket is valid for a year! There is so much here to see and you really can't view it all in a day, which is good in a way as gives you a good excuse to return. Friendly informative staff at the entrance too and close car parking make this a must for an educational and pleasurable visit to the lovely city of York..
L. K.
Really enjoyed our time at the museum! Lots to do and see! The toy section of the museum was a big hit with our large family group. The cafe serves cakes and pastries. However, vegan and gluten free was lacking...
T. G. M.
To say that this place is amazing it's such an understatement as to do it no justice at all. It is one of the most informative museums that I have ever been to, moving you through time in a way that explains not only York's history but our country's history as well. Please plan to spend a full day and don't do this wonderful museum short take your time reading, all the information you will leave as amazed as I was.
K. S.
A great museum, all the sounds and smells of back in the day, very well displayed and all the clothing displays were fascinating, you can just go round at your own pace to enjoy the experience.
R. G.
We didn't really go into the museum so this review is mainly about the gardens. And the gardens are amazing, and offers an excellent place to hangout in the summer. The grounds are also home to several interesting buildings, including a medieval hall that is hired out for functions, the ruins of an abbey, and a small botanical garden. They do close the gardens at 6pm, but don't worry as the gardeners give plenty of notice!
C. &. A. R.
What a wonderful museum! Well worth admission. So much to see! As Americans, we learned a lot about the British experience during WW1 in half of the museum and walked the "streets" of Victorian England in the other half. This museum used to be a prison, so part of the museum is also a very interesting exhibit about that. I wish we'd have had more time to stay!
K. A.
A must visit. Expect to be there for 2 hours and even then you won't get to take in all the exhibits. Extremely well laid out
M. M.
York is a walled city in northeast England and most visited city in UK. there is lot of tourist attractions in York must visit places are 1. The greatest Railway Museum 2. York City Walls 3. JORVIK Viking Centre 4. York Minster 5. A cruise on the Ouse River 6. Clifford's Tower 7. York Castle Museum 8. Yorkshire Museum
M. J.
I understand the need for preservation but it's very pricey
M. M.
Lovely day out, very well managed, due to covid, one way system whilst going round. Lots to see, very interesting and informative.
A. G.
Changed so much since I last went been separated into 2 sides now. Good couple of hours wandering about but I think it's been spoilt by the separation not as many things to see as before.
S. H.
Very interesting history of the local area.
I was saddened to see that the shop sold animal products - really horrible to think about what the animals went through just for a few minutes of taste pleasure. Hopefully they can transition to a cruelty-free shop in the foreseeable future.
Nice view of the castle, which you can pay to go and see separately (£10 from memory).
C. S.
Fantastic 1 hour tour, people dressed up in costume. Very informative and helped us to understand the history of York a lot more. Really interesting that everything on the Victorian street has been saved and reused.
H. W.
We went to the 1914 to present day museum, no problems with the ticket on the day. Lots of stairs to climb but we did find the lift half way round. The history of it all is brilliant, a must for everyone to visit when in York
S. L.
Very friendly staff. Amazing how they actually have sound effects as you walk around. £14 per adult..worth paying as you can use your ticket as much as you like for a whole year so when they change displays it's free to go in.
M. “. W.
I've been so many times yet it's always guaranteed to be a great day out. Friendly staff, tasty food and affordable tickets with at least two hours killed by quality displays and interactive exercises. My favourite part has to be the prison with projections!
R.
Worth to visit, I recommend to see some historical side
l. 8.
A bit busy but valuable to visit.
J. S.
A great spot to learn about the history of York castle. The recreated street is pretty cool. The other exhibits are well done but I don’t really get how they fit with the rest of the museum. Still worth the stop though!
m. S.
This is a great museum it's our third visit in 4 years we have taken different family members to experience it and all enjoyed it. The cobbled street is a great experience especially when there are the people in the shops to give some information on the history. We loved the chemist a few years ago spent a good twenty minutes talking to the employee who gave lots of information about the different medicines and did it in a fun way and all dressed in the era so was good for he kids to immerse themselves. This is one of our favourite museums and we will return again in the future
J. W.
Amazing place. Like stepping back in time!
P. H.
From start to finish it was a excellent experience. Lots to see, and very informative and engaging. Lots to see from days past including homes, prisons, toys and more so plenty for everyone. Fantastic collections, loved every minute. Great value for money.
J. C.
A must go to in York. The exhibits are so fun to explore. There is a mix of old English history surrounding the museum, tower and prison and also artifacts and items during the first world war. I would definitely recommend visiting if you're in the area or haven't gone to visit yet
f. d.
Fantastic, massive with lots of friendly guides to answer any questions
D. W.
Fascinating place and a great time out for the entire family.
A. I.
Absolutely superb museum have being visiting it for many years , the place has a fantastic atmosphere, the replicated rooms and streets are excellently done . Special exhibitions include the 60s ,WW1 and clothing through the ages. If you have a genuine interest in history allow at least four hours to see everything at a steady pace . Ample parking across the road at the river side .
A. A.
Very good day out for all kids loved it.
S. S.
Very good experience, loved the different time frames, especially the victorian Street, you could actually smell how it would've been in the past. Good little actives for children in the 60s section but some parts can be scary especially the dungeons for young children. Good graphics in the cells. The only disappointing thing is the gift shop, not very good items and extremely expensive, and have to buy tickets in advance and book a time frame (although you can be slightly earlier).
G. H. U.
Beautiful place and would recommend checking it out
A. G.
Really interesting place. Been there 4 years ago, but it has changed it's exhibits slightly. Well organised for covid. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Need to allow at least 2 hours to see everything.
C. M.
Great museum, the recreation of a Victorian Street in particular was very interesting
M. S.
Nice museum - lots to see and learn about York’s post-Viking era past. Especially enjoyed the reconstructed streets and being able to explore various sections.
I did not like that we were encouraged to pre-book and yet still had to queue…in the end if you prebook you should be given priority entry, the only thing we saved about 40p instead of buying tickets at the door…
Staff were helpful.
S. M.
Great museum and helpful staff. Victorian street and WWI exhibition were stand outs. Our son really enjoyed these. Only problem was with online booking.
S. P.
Pretty good, I couldn't fully enjoy the experience because my eye was stinging the whole day because I'm useless with sun protection but despite that personal problem I still liked it. Lots of fun activities for kids!
N.
You could easily spend a whole day here. This is such a unique and interesting museum. If you are in York for the weekend, it's worth a visit. It's also conveniently close to other must-see attractions - directly opposite Clifford's Tower, close to a beautifully intact Georgian Mansion (I forget the name of it, so not very helpful for review!) Along with the Jorvik Viking Center, the York Dungeons etc. Public parking nearby.
Probably one of the most immersive and interactive museums in the UK.
G. F.
Great museum! Full of brilliant artifacts, information boards and interactive parts. Everything was super clean and well laid out. We'd visit again 🙂
A. W.
Great place to explore when you're in York. Lots to see and the atmosphere it feels very realistic and a surreal experience.
We bought tickets in advance aswell so we saved £1 each. Negative: There's no place to store your belonging so you have to take it with you everywhere you go . I had a suitcase as we were about to leave Yotk and stopped by here and I was told I had to carry it and not wheel it which was annoying even though it didn't make any noise. The man followed me to see I was holding my luggage- god forbid I use the wheels even though there music playing around the museum
N. H.
A fantastic museum with a huge amount of interesting content. Well worth the entry fee
j. w.
Excellent museum appealing to all ages. Plenty of memories for us wrinklies and a large number of interactive exhibits for younger ones. Very welcoming staff.
R. H.
Lots of interesting history presented in an entertaining and easily accessible format
T. c. 1.
Loved it! Worth booking a slot to visit beforehand. Out of everything we did in York this was the best!
J. M.
Recommended by Mad Alice, a brilliant museum which we found to be larger than we first imagined, I’m aware that the old street is one of the main attractions to the public however if there where more sliding photos of different parts and the layout on the home page of the website, we would have booked sooner, great day out.
A. S.
Great museum, very informative
T. H.
By far one of the best museums going! I love York and most museums here are excellent. There is a great victorian street set up to look exactly like the victorian era. It feels like you have stepped back in time, a breathtaking experience. I have been here several times and I'm astonished each time I visit. There is a women's prison bit that has a story in each cell. There is so much to explore such as the swinging 60's, toys from the past and even the court yard where people in prison were hanged! Very great experience and I will keep returning to see it all again.
S. J.
Full of history - and probably the best museum I have ever visited. Every detail is perfect, such a good experience.
D. B.
The museum is arranged over two areas separated by reception, shop and cafe. The women's prison area containing the Victorian street is a bit smelly and needs some forced ventilation. The outdoor mill area was closed. The other area contains 1st world war and prison displays including quite a good 1960s area. By far the worst part is the cafe. Understaffed on the day of our visit with delays and no clearing or wiping of tables and a mismatch of seating facilities. Every new hot drink cup we saw had a certain amount of spillage on the outside. Poor hygiene. We would give the cafe a miss!
S. D.
York Castle Museum at York GB, was amazing. It has a rich history of events dating way back from pre war days to present. There were displays of toys then and now. Children will love this museum.
S. K.
One of the best museums and has been since my first visit in 1981. And the staff are knowledgeable and can speak on the exhibit they are ‘guarding’. Unlike most museums in Europe. Fabulous displays in a heritage building on an historic site. It doesn’t get any better.
J.
Best museum in York, full of history and great experiences! It took us around 2hrs to get through it all! Worth a visit.
I. D.
Brill museum. Recreation of the streets are really well done. Feels like you have been taken back in time. Could do more with the dungeon part though.
G. M.
Loved the reconstruction of the streets, shops and people dressed in period costumes
J. C.
Wow get to see a lot for your money in this place so much to look at
G. C.
Such a great day out for the whole family. Well worth the money. There was something for everyone, and we all have different interests. I love the way they break up the museum with different areas for the younger children. Just as my 2 year old was getting restless, there seemed to be a station with toys or colouring just around the corner each time. My 6 year old really enjoyed it as well.
B. A. V. K. E. t. 3.
Slightly disappointed with the museum as I thought it would be more about the medieval history of York however instead it goes through the era of the 60s and has exhibitions of the beetles and other decades. Worth a visit but won't be returning
D. W.
Great day out for every member of the family.
M. E.
York Castle Museum was the first stop on my trip to York last year and was the best part of it. The museum takes you through lots of different exhibitions. I got to the Victorian Street - you might bump into some people in costume who tell you a bit about the exhibition. Later is the Prison and a section about the 60s - very Austin Powers. Finally, there's a section about World War 1 was great. There's a gift shop at the entrance. I went on a weekday and it was totally quiet. I'd definitely go again.

We spent a good couple of hours here, there is so much to do.
As it was the school holidays there were events on throughout the week. My favourite part was the prison which was quite creepy. There is a gift shop and cafe on site too. Parking is just across the road.
m. k.
Museum is worth seeing , about 2 hours you can spend to see vicorian times, war exhibitions and old prison cells. They are also rooms with activities for kids.
D. V.
Myself and my family had such a great time at York Castle museum , free entry for kids is a massive box ticked for us and myself and my partner's entry fee was reasonable too , we stayed a good few hours and the volunteers and staff were fantastic especially in the world war area , gift shop was process very fair so that meant my son's were able to get a couple of lovely gifts . In a whole we would definitely go back , parking near by is available to so another bonus

One of the best history museums I've ever visited in the UK.
We spent over 3 hours in this museum and had such a fun and interesting time! The museum began with information about the different period rooms, followed by an exhibition on childhood toys which bought some happy memories and then the immersive Victorian street.
The Victorian English street was quite big and you could go inside certain stores, very realistic - smells and sounds and it was really good escapism. I didn't feel like I was in 2022 when we were going through this exhibition. The WW1 exhibition was very gripping and sad but I learnt so much in that exhibition and it was also very interactive.
As we were on our feet quite a lot, we unfortunately did not see the prison exhibitions and the 1960s exhibition was a bit disappointing because it wasn't as immersive or thorough as the Victorian and WW2 exhibitions. I would visit this museum again and recommend it because I mostly enjoyed it but just wish the 1960s exhibition was expanded - wish there was a 1960s street with more store fronts and more information as I find that time period really interesting.
S. W.
Lots to see here. Learn about all different periods of history right up to the present day. Walk down a Victorian street where can you visit the sweet shop & buy a sugar mouse. Spend some time in the the castle prison where you can experience life in the cells. Great day out.
R.
So this is one of my favourite museums. There is so much to do from the amazing street set up to how rooms have developed in houses over the years. There is a fantastic military exhibition giving the children a chance to experience what it was like in the trenches and more. The staff we’re friends and knowledgeable. So why have I given it three stars, this is mainly down to accessibility for young children who need a pushchair. We are a family of four with a young child and as a result of not been able to take the pushchair with us only myself and my 6 year old son went. Don’t get me wrong we both loved it but it was such a-shame that we could all go.
M. R.
The exhibits in this museum were great!
K. B.
Really enjoyed the old toys section especially seeing reminding of all the ones from my childhood. The Victorian cobbled street looked lovely all decorated for Christmas. Wasn't expecting the Christmas carol performance on the street either it was a lovely touch. Also enjoyed the stories from down in the prisons too. Highly recommended lots to see and do here something for everyone.
M. W.
Fab few hours spent here today with my hubby and son
M. N.
Loved this museum for the most part. I enjoyed several areas of the museum, in particular the period room displays, the toy exhibition, and especially the Victorian street, which actually changes from day to night and back again and is very atmospheric. The cafe was very busy and there was not a lot of variety of food so if I were to go again I'd take a picnic.
E. P.
Name is a bit deceiving as there is little to do with the castle at the museum. Good coverage of more recent (Victorian etc.) York. Really enjoyed the WW1 portion of the museum.
E. T.
One of the most admirable museums. It was extremely easy to navigate and easily explore everything they had to offer. We visited during the Christmas holidays and the Victorian Christmas experience was thrilling. Staff was kind and helpful especially during the tours.
A. A.
It is a very interesting and amazing historical place. There is a lot to see and enjoy; streets, stores, different rooms and each one tells a story. Kids will have fun as well although some spots may look a little bit scary. It is located in the heart of downtown and you should not miss it.
E. A.
Excellent value for money. The living museum and exhibitions are very interesting, would recommend leaving a few hours in your trip to York to visit here. The period actors were great, and helped understand the different exhibits.
M. P.
Really interesting and entertaining experience, like a museum crossed with a theme park. A great day out, and I do mean day.. This place is much bigger than it seems from the outside. Fun and curious, regardless of your age.
C. R.
Lots of amazing things to see. The sound effects and the smells were very clever. So interesting with all the World War One exhibits. It was all very informative. The layout was really well done. You do one section and then the other, so you were not lost or repeating what you had seen. Staff always on hand to ask questions etc. It’s a must see while here in York. One of my favourite places as I love to see and hear about historical times.
T. C.
Loved the Museum, in particular the Victorian streets and shops, the sounds of a busy street with horse drawn carriages, and carts, must have been quite scary when crossing the street in those days. I also visited the old prison cells, this included, Dick Turpin's, to complete the museum it may take up to 2 to 3 hours, depending how long you linger in certain areas, when I visited we only had an Hour and 30 mins as we had a busy day but will come back and view the rest, much more to see such as World War Trenches, and more. When we bought our tickets, I believe this was £10 per adult, we where told, they could be used for the rest of the year. So worth the £10 if you intend to visit again. Also a Cafe, toilets and gift shop.
S. K.
Really enjoyable with lots to see. We only did half and saved the rest for another visit. The York Museum Trust card is good value and gives unlimited access to 3 museums for 12 months.
The Victorian street now has smells to match the scenes and guides in character.
The collection of Vivienne Westwood shoes within the exhibition 'Shaping the body' was wonderful!
D. R.
This is a great museum, well worth a visit. Make sure you get the joint ticket if you're going to go to the Yorkshire museum. The way they have created the exhibits is amazing especially the streets. great place to wander round on a rainy day
D. R.
Surprisingly awesome. Waaaay bigger than expected, always interesting and at tines awe inspiring. If nothing else, come for the amazing Victorian street recreation - it blew our minds. We expected maybe an interesting hour - I think we spent 5 hours enthralled. If in doubt - do it.
O. H.
Was told it was a good place to go before I visited York. It didn't disappoint. We were totally impressed and will be taking my youngest when we are back in York in a few months, There is a wide range of topics to cater for everyone.
J. G.
Really enjoyed the museum. The children particularly enjoyed the detective activity being run. It made them really explore in a way they wouldn't ordinarily. The Victoria Street was excellent and very interesting. I found it very disconcerting to see my childhood toys as museum pieces! 😅
J. P.
Loved this museum. Really good value for money (kids under 16 go free) and not boring. Kept in good order, clean and tidy. Staff are helpful.
Cafe serves good food and the toilets are clean. 👍👍
M. M.
Well worth the price. I was amazed by how smooth the transition between exhibits was and how much they managed to fit in these buildings. The recreated street is definitely the most prominent part of this museum though, with displays in every single nook and cranny. Helpful, useful and enthusiastic staff further the experience. Lots of interactive exhibits making it quite a family friendly place, though it can get quite busy the museum is so large its not too hard to find somewhere without a crowd.
T. F.
Great museum. Very clean and signage posted to make sure you follow the correct path through the museum. Video is not allowed but photos are. The signs state that but some people seemed to be confused by it. I recommend a visit.
D. D.
Very good informative museum. Well laid out with helpful staff. Cafe was good too. Would definitely recommend it to others and would go again myself. Some of the toys in the toy section were ones I remember playing with so did make me feel a bit old.
l. h.
Visited today and wasn't dissapointed, if you haven't been before and want a good place to go then I thoroughly recommend. Depending on child I would say age 5 and over. The prisons really do make you feel some of the horror however the exhibits will take that away and young children wouldn't even notice it. Well worth the money
L. B.
Im so so glad we visited here on our weekend away as it was the highlight of my visit to York. The museum is huge and packed full of information. I absolutley love that its like stepping back in time with all the different displays. I would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone and i will definatley be returning each time i visit york.
E.
Brilliant museum. Worth the money. The only thing I would say is do not go later than 2pm on a Saturday, otherwise you run the risk of not getting round in time and seeing everything.
It really is a well laid out, clean and well presented museum. The staff members are friendly and helpful. The collection they have is interesting and informative. The displays are very good.
Overall I would say this museum is worth a visit.
E. H.
Absolutely brilliant, could easily have spent a whole day here, there is so much to see. Wet with kids, 9, 8 and 6 and wee all loved it, the first section is all about the history of york, Victorian era, a toy museum (where I was rather distressed to see quite a few of my childhood toys!) A section on the human body which we did skip over as it want really great for kids, then there is the street set up as a Victorian street, it was amazing, we arrived at this bit a tad late so most of the people in character had gone but the place was amazing! We didn't get as much time in the war section or prison section as the place was due to close, bit what we saw was brilliant. Definitely recommend, well worth the £20, but allow a whole day or at least most of it!
A. S.
Very good collection.
T. G.
A lovely place to visit either on your own or with a family, lots to see from old streets to the 1960s
K. M.
The museum is different to what i expected but loved the jail area. Enjoyed the whole town but watch the car park inspector. We were 5 mins late back to the car and a fine on the window... not impressed.
R. C.
Couldn't of been any better!! Its as if you are in the particular time zone yourself, with a few real doors of old cells that give you a thrill. There are different areas that show different habits of that era. I would certainly advise you to come here with your family, also a real educational visit for the children👍🏻👍🏻
H. S.
Absolutely fantastic day out. Lots of interesting things. My favourite was a street from the past with fantastic little shops and a real atmosphere of old times. The sounds and smells made you feel like you've gone back in time.
P. S.
Great place to go with your kids
T. E. G.
Spent an afternoon here today as it was very wet outside and we loved it. Very well set out and lots of very quirky and unusual things to look at, from the victorian Street to world war one and even old cells from the prison. entry price was 22 pounds for two adults and well worth every penny. If you like quirky and something different you will love it here, keep up the good work
r. w.
I am not usually one for museums. However, this place is really good and well worth the money. Brings back so many memories. Things we had forgotten. Walking down the street scene was brilliant. The sound and light effects helped to make it. A really good place for all ages.
J. S.
Always a good afternoon out at the Castle Museum. Lots to see and the rebuilt street is a real gem
C. M.
One of the best museums I've been to. There are amazing displays and took more that 2 hours to get round it and that was without all the children's areas being visited. It's very well laid out with plenty of information on the artefacts. Well done to all the staff.
K. B.
Has to be one of my all time favourite museums. I have visited many times, we love it as a family. Great workshops for children during the holidays. Some fantastic people who do the workshops too!
A. B.
Very nice walk though the history of York. I like the set up of the street, showing all the shops and facilities available at the time. It makes you feel like you were almost walking on streets, where hundreds have walked before you. There was also rooms set up to show you how people lived. Well worth a visit!
K. L. o. S.
This museum has basically two parts:
York of the 19th century which takes the visitor to the atmosphere of that era.in this part of the museum you can see how people lived, what they dressed, how a school and a prison was look like at that period of time.the second part is about the world war 1 period. It is shows the harsh conditions the soldiers had been through and how they survived it.the exhebition shows what the soldiers wear, their grooming tool, the weapons they have used.you can see the medical treatment of that period of time as well. I personally find world war 1 very interesting theme, so I recommend this museum very much, especially if you are interested in the English history 150 years back.it is a great attraction for the family.
J. W.
Warm greeting from staff, attraction looks small from the outside but is a true hidden gem, has something for everyone, must visit!
S. M.
Great place to visit for the whole family or just adults. Fascinating displays, the cells in the debtors prison are very frightening if you can place yourself in the shoes of a felon or debtor in the past.
P. C. T.
Mixed feelings in the museum. By the name of it you'd expect it's mainly about a castle. Actually it's not.
It has a mixed of different things, some of them are cool like the recreation of a old York street with the locals and atmosphere or the Castle Prison. Others are less interesting to me like history of toys.
M. P.
It’s a must do - what a fabulous afternoon we had. Staff really helpful and full of knowledge.very cool to get to walk through a re-created Victorian street and get a sense of the world back in those days.
A. H.
Excellent museum. Period rooms have been created, along with a Victorian street to display items in context. Far better than just being in glass cabinets.
M. T.
Very nicely done and plenty of things to see. Would definitely recommend!
N. J.
Excellent. Really interesting, informative and well looked-after. A good 3 hours entertainment for the whole family (2 adults and kids aged 8 and 11). Would definitely recommend.
S. M.
Really interesting museum, especially the Victorian street, WW1 trenches and dungeons. Some great vintage toys too. Well set out, with the café just where you need it, half way round.
J. S.
Loved it. Hours of interesting information. We'll worth the visit.
J. E.
Really lovely step back in time. Well worth a visit.
S. B.
Very lovely staff, big place with a lot of stuff to see it, most of it interactive, very immersive and informative. We had an amazing day here for a good price.
T. R.
You must visit if your in York!
A Fantasic place for all ages. The street was fantastic and took you back to the 1900. They had two characters walking around, they were very knowledgeable to answer any questions about what used to be a prison and the castle history.
B. H.
A very interesting place, so much to see. Well worth a visit.
S. G.
Great museum, will definitely revisit! Two hours not long enough so ran out of time for The Sixties gallery.
Dismal cafe with haphazard and sparse seating and poor quality cakes
V. S.
Last minute decision to come here and was definitely a good choice. As a family (son is 11) we all had a great time. Lots to see and learn.
J. H.
It's a great place for a day out with the family. Many things to see and do a very interesting place. They have a replica street with all the shops sounds and smells from the past. I would highly recommend a visit if your having a day out in York.
P. R.
Great place to visit in Town. Real experience on how was the Victorian era lifestyle in all social classes. Highly recommended for people who would like to know further about York history in that era. All the buildings are a recession of real ones. Tour guides explains the setup flawless. It's a good value for 💰.
N. M.
Huge value for money. If you want to show your kid(s) what it was like to live in the past, this is the place - ditch the iPad and TV and learn how lucky they are compared to kids in the 1800. This can fill a few hours at least.
S. T.
Really enjoyed this museum, there was a lot more than I first thought & it was interesting. Only adjustment is to allow more time to see everything!
N.
Amazing place to visit, location is great too as everything is so close. The old streets, shops and jail are a must go. Enjoyed all of it!!
L. D.
The highlight of the museum for me are the Victorian streets, currently decorated for Christmas.
The museum is divided into two sides and in reality the first which includes the streets is significantly more interesting and indeed by the time you have completed this half it feels quite a challenge to continue on the the second. Ideally you would do the two over two separate visits.
However this is a must do if you visit York
K.
A must-see visit on the list for York! The museum is packed full of interesting objects and facts, the Victorian Street being the most interesting. We were fortunate to catch one of the on-the-hour talks held by Alan, a very knowledgeable person who told us all about the museum's history, definitely worth listening to if you can stick around!
l. e.
Googlw thinks it's so clever....I went in there car park not the museum....
Rip off prices in car park tho.
B. C.
York sure has great museums! This one, in part of the old women’s prison, is on grounds that have been used for military and justice purposes since the Norman conquest. The exhibits covered a diverse spectrum, from the history of the prison and the creepy old cells to insights into the human body and culture across decades and centuries, to a fascinating perspective on the Great War from Yorkshire experiences. Oh, and there was the charming Victorian street scene, which is perfect for selfie age. I can see why this place is packed with school kids, but us two American tourists enjoyed our visit, too.
B. D.
Great museum with many interesting exhibits. Particularly enjoyed the life size recreation of an 18th Century Street. Worth the price!
J. C.
Good value. Lots to see. Never a dull moment.
L. W.
This place is great for nostalgia and history in general. Expect to spend at least 2 hours here with the added bonus of having your ticket extended for a year should you wish to come back.
P. C.
This place is brilliant. Such a range of things to do and see. Including a full sized reconstruction of a Victorian / Dickensian street, complete with cobble paving, and shops. Well worth a visit.
S. M.
Loved this museum, if you're in York for any length of time I highly recommend a visit. The re-creation of the victorian Street was just fabulous.
D. P.
First time we went to York no body recomended visiting here but WOW this is awesome & should be your second port of call after the Viking Jordvic adventure or the Minster which ever your journey. 5⭐
K. S.
Good experience for a family outing.you can spend two hours in here.good for rainy days.
j. b.
GreaT place, plenty of interesting things to see, staff lovely, well worth a visit.
C. T.
Very interesting & varied. Kids loved talking to the people in the Victorian street, & my mum enjoyed the 60's exhibition.
C. M.
Absolutely brilliant place to visit.
Staff are friendly and welcoming.
Lots of different things to see.
5 *****
R. T.
Fantastic Museum had a great time. Friendly staff and there is a great gift shop and Caffe for a nice relaxing cuppa and slice of cake
D. A.
This museum is a must visit if you are visiting York and seems to be great for families with children too as there are activities throughout.
All exhibitions were good with the Victorian street being the cream of the crop which uses smells to immerse you on what Victorian life would of been like. The street also has guides dressed in victorian garments that can answer any questions you have.
I. S.
Interesting visit, the Victorian street was excellent as was the prison with some of the prisoners explaining what life was like. This was a long visit and far too hot. Shame it was so hot as otherwise it would have been excellent. Be prepared for a lot of walking.
M. B.
Faye prior is a great expert in detailing each story of the tour. you can tell she takes great pride in her knowledge of the history of the castle and prison. very well presented and a highly enjoyable tour. she also helped me propose in the castle garden! 😄
T. M. (.
One of the most lovely places I like to visit every year. Specially like prision section and of course - little town inside... 😊
S. L.
One of the best museums I have ever visited! One thing York know what to do well is museums!! Amazing! So much education on WW1, York prison, fashions through the ages......a must see!
T. W. H.
Very good museum! Especially the Kirkgate section! Loved seeing all the old stuff on display and so well done! I do think it might be slightly over priced though
H. V.
Amazing place! Definitely worth visiting
G. B.
It was an interesting visit - especially seeing the sort of day to day life a high street some 100 years or so ago recreated
D. W.
Amazing, we all loved it it kept us entertained for a good while, take some 20ps if you want to see some of the old pieces running, well worth it.
A. S.
Love it! One of the best museum, the way they presenting is amazing. A lot to see. And there is a victorian street, just was it back in the old ages.
B. D.
Nice museum a lot of stairs and walking
S. W.
Absolutely fantastic - best museum covering all ages. The tour was brilliant thanks to Ethan
Cannot recommend enough - if you in York you have to visit here
a. z.
Well worth a visit. Children are free with an adult, adults cost approx £9. The Victorian street is particularly impressive. Kids loved the experience overall.
A. K.
a great place reflecting the atmosphere of those years . You can see the street of the pre-war years and touch how it all looked . I recommend this place to everyone
B. W.
A well thought museum displays that cover a range of key periods. There is a street mockup and a look at fashion through the ages. The Vivienne Westwood exhibits are cleverly blended with other periods to highlight how the past influences her designs. The York prison is another fascinating display that shows colourful characters from the past and the laws that people fell foul of at various times during the history of the prison.
It takes a while to get round the museum, so give plenty of time when visiting, and spend time listening to the reenactments used to help engage audiences.
L. F. R. C.
Beautiful museum. It is quite big, so it takes some hours to see it all. Discount on entrance fee for students.
C. W.
Fantastic museum with a wealth of history
L. R. M. (.
First time we had been to York but my son 12yrs had been wanting to go to this museum for a good while,so as a summer holiday treat we headed down for a family day out. I'm not much of a museum lover but i was fairly surprised while in this place very much more interesting than id expected and my son loved it. He is hard to please, but he said it was the best he had visited and hz been to quite a few. Thank you for helping us have a day without the "I'm bored" being said repeatedly.
T. F.
Yet again (I am sure I reviewed this last year) - I maintain, this is without doubt the best museum in the whole of the UK and as a tourist attraction it does not charge the earth for the family. It covers a vast period of York's history, with lots of fascinating mock streets, shops and installations. You can easily spend a good few hours there too.
D. P.
I have been 2 times this year and it is grate. The streets are very interesting with rats and horses. Toys, war and stocks .gooday had.
D. M.
A really nice museum particularly good at Christmas time.
Interesting history of York and the castle.
The social history of the 20th century was really good.
Kirkgate at Christmas was lovely
B. A.
A great museum with plenty of interesting stuff to sink your teeth into. The Victorian street was fantastic. Well worth the price.
D. L.
Excellent museum for all age groups. Will definitely visit again.
N. K.
We just visited the surrounding area of the museum and river. Well worth the visit to the park and river side.
S. T.
One of its renowned displays is the reconstructed street, Kirkgate, that has been hugely influential in museums displays worldwide. The York Castle Museum is housed in a former debtors’ prison and an adjoining former women’s prison, both of which are Grade I listed.
G. J.
Brilliant place well worth the money, full of original artifacts.
G. P.
This place is in a completely different league, here you will be surprised positively, this is one of the best attractions i have ever visited and it's very cheap, this is a place you definitely have to go, you will never regret going in here and you will love the history behind it and how the things connect.
P. F.
What a fantastic place to visit. Staff were friendly and extremely helpful and informative, in particular, the guide Alan. Would highly recommend taking the tour of the victorian Street as otherwise you will miss so much.
H. W.
I last visited here about 20 years ago. It never disappoints. So much to see, beautifully set out with great exhibits. There currently a 'broken relationships' theme in one area which surprisingly manages to be varied, interesting , personal and touching.
It's slightly shocking that I'm now old enough to see many recognisable exhibits in a museum from my youth!😊
K. C.
Came here a couple of days ago, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. There is a lot to see here (we spent 3hours here) but obviously you can spend as much or as little time as you want. If you like to read the information posters on each section/display, you could well spend all day here! My favourite part was the Victorian Street, where you are propelled back to the past. I wish more museums did this immersive experience! Cost of admission is fair especially given that you can return for free as much as you’d like within a year. If you visit York, I highly recommend this museum.
p. m.
Staff where excellent, very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Very knowledgeable about the history of York. Will definitely return .
J. T.
Excellent place to visit, but not so good if you have a bad back. Its quite a long day, with a few seated areas as you go round. Entry gives you an annual pass, which is very useful. We did it over two visits. WW1 experience very poinient and worth a look, as is 60's scene and prison experience. Good value for money.
M. J.
We have enjoyed every minute of visiting the museum today. I love museums that offer children in for free, I was a child when I first ever experienced the museum and I never forgot it. I've always wanted to visit again and today I did with my own children. The staff were so friendly and helpful. There is so much to see and do.
S. W.
Nice museum following the way people lived in different eras of the town and prison.
M. C.
A great fun and educational day out. We really enjoyed the exhibits and the way that they were laid out drew you into the narrative. Well worth a visit.
M. B.
Wow. Range of exhibits and themes (the local prison, 1960's, body image, world war 1, toys, chocolate and of course York and life in York through the ages). Very engaging and not too intense - right about of info/ display boards to read.
j. w.
First time here and we loved it , will defo be returning and a bonus the tickets last a year
R. B.
Definitely worth a visit if in York, could take you 2-3 hours but my girlfriend and I got round in 1h20m and weren’t rushing. Great insight into history
W. H. (.
I personally love this museum its a really great one for on a rainy day you can take your time and spend all day going round looking at everything, the Victorian Street is my favourite, a beautiful reconstruction with authentic items everywhere. Great new exhibits as well, always new things to see and do. Worth the money in my eyes.
M. W.
Excellent museum of early York life and penal system, look through the dungeons and street life.
A "must see" for anyone in or visiting York
G. H.
What a wonderful museum. A must visit for all ages. So well put together.
P. G.
This is a fascinating museum detailing the history of york castle from its saxon beginning through viking and normans then on to the massacre of the jews and through debtors prisons to what it is today.
There is a lot here to see and it is very well curated.
The victorian street with original shopfronts was fascinating.
A. G.
An unusual collection of pieces of history makes this an interesting place to visit. The centrepiece is the covered street, representing a bygone Victorian era. A fascinating walk through a jumble of different times.
M. U.
Loved it, be prepared to spend at least 2 hours
D. L.
A great day out. Lots to look at. The Victorian street is fab, feels very authentic with the smells and staff in period costume.
l. c.
First time visiting.really enjoyed it.very educational.loved the dungeons & the cobbled street.loved the 60s theme will definitely be going again
H. R. G.
Amazing place, full of interactive history, spanning from stone age to modern day. Great day out
A. G.
Went for the Halloween tour a couple of weeks ago.
James was a great tour guide, he was knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
The whole museum is really interesting and worth going to. It probably takes half a day or full day depending on how much you like to read the detail.
A. Q.
We spent a great few hours here this morning with a 7 and 10 year old. Lots of interesting things and the street was fantastic!
M. G.
Fantastic place to visit, I had fun and they give discounts to student and disabled people too.
C. H.
Great place to visit in York! Would advise going, book online
R. S.
Simply outstanding.
A most enjoyable afternoon for a very reasonable price learnt a few previously unknown facts. Highly educational and customer service by staff is high. I think 13.60 for adult annual pass is a bargain and almost certainly endeavour to have at least a quick browse on new exhibitions on my visits to an amazing city...
S. R.
Wow absolutely fantastic. So much to see .so much to learn and going back in time. Wow women's feet were not only small but do slim. And I'd never fit in the dresses . But so fascinating. Worth every penny.
M. H.
Great museum. The lady on the front desk was really helpful and explained the best way to experience the exhibition. I loved traveling through time and being on the olde street with storefront. The Christmas theme and animation was wonderful. One of the best museums I've visited.
A. B.
Amazing place to visit when you're in York. It's a fair walk from the train station but the city main carpark is located out front. All of the museum was interesting and plenty if actors on hand to really make it something special. Loved the Victorian street they have built here. Worth a visit.
L. F.
Very nice place. I love the rebuilt city inside.
A. M.
One of the best museums that I have ever been to, I would definitely recommend coming here and having a look at the toy stories and the old jail, give yourself at least a couple hours though 😄
W. P.
We did a large part of the walls in an afternoon. They take you to parts of the city, which you wouldn't see any other way. Whilst bits can be wheelchair friendly, you would have to turn around and go back the way you came to get off. Some of the walls have no railings on one side, so care is advised, especially in the rain. Whilst you wouldn't die, it would hurt if you fell. The staired parts are steep and can be hard work after a day of walking. Overall if you want to see york from a different perspective, try the walls.
N. W.
This is a great place to visit with so much to see and do. The exhibitions are great and very interesting. The street was great. The staff were friendly and helpful.
P. T.
Having visited as a young child, again as a new parent and now as a child free older adult and there is always something new to see and so much to learn. A fascinating museum with so much history.
M. B.
Beautiful place well thought out just too many stairs
F. M.
A must-visit when you're in York. It is fun and full of great details. The place is huge yet won't bore you - even if you're not a fan of museums or history.
P. R.
Totally worth the price just to see the Kirkgate street. Not really recommended for kids. It's large and gets spooky especially in the prisons.
J. G.
Great family museum. Friendly staff and the exhibits are excellent - especially the Victorian street.
M. B.
What a fabulous place to visit well worth the entrance fee. Lovely café inside too. Lots to look at.
A.
-Only popped by the gift shop and was served by a friendly lady
-Lovely looking museum

One of the best museums I have been to. The talk in the 'Victorian Street' was fantastic.
V. B.
Absolutely brilliant if you don't visit anywhere else go to the museum
S. E.
All about York and the old prison that it was. Magic recreation of the old York streets inside.
A. P.
Love this place. The vintage street is amazing.
D. L.
Brilliant for a family excellent presentation Very interesting take as long as you want to read and absorb information enjoyable as well as educational had a great interesting time with family could not of asked for more
M. B. C. S.
Lovely museum, £10.00 entry but £5.00 of under 25, I would start with the left hand side, very informative and interesting, lots of things to see, touch and even try on. Love the courtyard bit, it's amazing that people that work there dress up. The right hand side isn't as exiting but still good and spending time in the cells is fun :)
N. T.
Very interesting to see the period rooms. I enjoyed the Victorian street and the children enjoyed crawling through the trench.
W. C.
A little too graphic for a 6 year old child, but great for adults and older children. Public hanging gallows and enemy heads on spikes are among many dark war scenes at this museum. I can see myself going quite often ☺️
S. J.
Absolutely brilliant, loads of different areas to the museum. Entry price is very reasonable as well £10 per adult
T. P.
Very interesting , value for money . On the day it was very hot inside.
L. K.
Most of it closed off as building work is being done. So price a bit steep. Still a great place to go though.
D. W.
Very interesting, informative and loved it. Would go again.
Does need improvement where Wheelchair access is concerned.
s.
Had a lovely tour of the costumes theough the ages, felt very covid safe (wore masks throughout, could sit at a bench but then you used that through the duration).
A. T.
Good place to visit lots of things to see we were in 3 hours staff excellent maybe not for very young children nice gift shop and cafe
M. W.
Fascinating and very interesting place loved it .
J. B.
Excellent museum. Lots of everything from times past. The WWI life in the trenches display is first rate 👍🏽
S. a. C.
Had a good day out lots to see. Enjoyed it. You should go and see. It cost £6.50 to go in.
m. m.
Amazing engaging interactive museum with wonderfully staff and clean facilities and good food to!!
s. b.
Best museum I've visited in the UK and I've been to many!
王.
Highly recommend to visit. It is a good place to learn the history and see the old streets and shops built in imitation.
M. n. M.
Great place to visit for a real historical journey through the amazing story of the origins of York.
D. W.
One price gets you an annual pass which is great value. Spent 2 1/2 hours and do mot see it all. The staff are very knowledgeable
R. S.
£5 for entrance to the tower and £10 for museum. Not much to view inside. But the view from the top is good.
L. F.
If you fancy a trip back in time this is the place to go. Time and money well spent.
K. H.
A good place to take the kids, the exhibits are well presented in an authentic setting.
E. L.
A fantastic place to visit. We spent nearly three hours there.
r. g.
This museum is hands down the best museum I have ever been too. The information was displayed in such a way that it had me lingering for more and I learnt so much. The people responsible for the creation and vision of this museum should win the highest award for educational proesque. Sensational..
J. S.
Excellent! Not my first visit here. An engrossing museum with many displays offering a view into, not just the castles, but, the history of York. Suitable for all ages, I thoroughly recommend a visit to this museum.
B.
Amazing recreation that sets the mood of the era, with lots to see from a wide range of eras.
G. R.
Not bad but once you've been you don't need to go again. It's expensive to get in yes you can go as many times in 1 Yr but why would you I went last week with someone who's never been to York. And I'd been seven yrs ago and it hadn't changed.
S. M.
Only visited last hour of opening time. Spent it at the Kirkgate Xmas Tale. Loved it, so authentic, worth visit just for this. Ticket is valid for a year so would love to visit again.
If you are in York just make your way to the castle museum as the Internet states its sold out, its not!!
L. P.
Excellent museum with plenty to see and do.
S. K.
Very interesting informative museum. By far my favourite part is the old cells.
M. D.
Great place - nice cafe and fantastic exhibits - Lady in Ye old Fabric shop( habadadashry?) Really helpful and told use a good few historical facts!
Z. D.
Great way to while a few hours away ....
B. B.
Great place to visit, lots to see and very educational.
S. L.
Lovely place exhibited well presented easily less 3 or 4 hours
B. g.
The attraction is absolutely excellent but was very disappointed at the lack of face mask and social distancing enforcement, ended up not seeing all of the museum as we didn't feel safe.
Such a shame for such an amazing and brilliant museum.
P. R.
Very interesting local museum covering more social history rather than politics or military history. Good areas on fashion, period furnishing, and children's games. Large section on the first world war and local peoples place in it. Easily worth the entrance charge.
T. G.
Beautiful
E. B.
Visited lasted week as I wanted to take a family member round and I'd not visited in an absolute age. I forgot how extensive it is! So many wonderful galleries and the Kirkgate street is just awesome. Absolutely loved talking to the Policeman, he was such a fountain of knowledge and really nice to talk too. My family member was just in awe wandering around and we had a great afternoon out! Highly recommended for sure 👍 👌 💯
K. M.
Was a brilliant day out, we took a walk along the walls that surround York and a walk around the shambles to the market well worth a visit
P. K.
Brilliant. I love York and love this place. It's fun, factual and informative.
C. W.
Loved this museum. Visted every Sunday for five weeks! There's so much to see. And the price of one ticket means you can return ah many times as you like in a year! Yusaf one of the museum curators, is incredibly knowledgeable and made out visits so enjoyable! Hope he gets a pay bonus!
J. G.
Great museum, well laid out. Kept the kids entertained for a couple of hours which is no easy feat. Victorian street at the end is a real highlight.
Can’t fault the staff either, very accommodating.
T. M.
Great museum with a huge range of stuff to see.
L. C.
Really interesting! Definitely worth the entrance fee!
A. M.
This is a fantastic museum you could easily spend 3 to 4 hours exploring it has a large variety of exhibits well worth a visit.
G. D.
Wow!!!! So much to see. Great value for money
S. 2.
It's been a long time since I last visited the castle museum, it's still as good as I remember if not better. A wide ranging museum that covers the social fabric of British life alongside the horrors of the first world war plus prisons. Well worth a visit. A large car park nearby and centrally located next to Clifford's Tower in the City Centre.
G. M.
Great museum. Well worth the money & will go back. The ticket is valid for a year so that's even better value. Nice coffee shop. One way system so good for covid situation. Great 60s area brought back lots of memories.
M. R.
One of the better museums I've visited. Definitely recommend
S. S.
Not what many people expect. No castle really and the entire museum is more a personal collection on social history than a traditional museum with a base theme
P. G.
A very interesting museum but nothing to do with the castle really, so if you are expecting a castle tour you will be disappointed.
We spent just over two hours going through both sides, with the Victorian Street the highlight.
S. M.
First visit and loved it well worth the money
R. S.
Really enjoyed this place. You walk through all these different rooms that are all set up in different periods. There is a complete re-created Victorian street as well, all inside. So much interesting things to see and do, even an olde sweet shoppe for the kids. We really liked the 80’s and 90;s areas, kids playing pong and looking at the old walkmans. We even found a Nintendo DS that my daughter still had. Unexpectedly spent hours here and thoroughly recommend it. There is also a face and gift shop in the reception area.
v.
Amazing place we have been 7 times last year and probably the same this year. They also have a lovely cafe were you can get a decent drink and snack, I think they also do large meals.
s. S.
Very interesting museum, good exhibits
A. R.
Enjoyed the visit during COVID restrictions, we didn’t read everything but interacted with every exhibit and spent just over an hour and a half inside.
I wouldn’t say it is very child friendly, there are lots of better things to do with kids in York.
It was an interesting trip through history with the recreated Victorian Street the highlight.
It lost 1 star for not having enough to keep kids entertained and another 1 star because the cafe was closed.
E. F.
Really love the Victorian street recreation it looks fab and the museum staff working that area are great to explaining stuff and looking the part
A. M.
A brilliant museum, great exhibitions and lovely insights
l.
We had a pretty good time here. Was quite entertaining but some of the exhibitions felt a little out of place.
The streets and shops were awesome though
M. L.
Brilliant place to visit so much history staff very helpful would recommend anybody to visit
J. L.
Loved this place. Well worth the visit
T. P.
Interesting museum, but not aimed at kids, teens plus really.
The female staff member in Kirkgate today was incredibly rude and poor reflection on the museum. Telling kids off for eating sweets told in your own shop, shame on you. Ruined the experience for a 3 and 7 year old. Once she's no longer here, let us know, and we may revisit.
N. C.
Extremely interesting I love how it can go from night to day all the staff are really helpful
B.
We pre-booked our slot for 11.30 and turned up at 11.15, however we were told by the attendant that we had to wait, whilst he let in walk ups!!! This led to a queue of people who had taken the time to pre-book their tickets online having to wait whilst people who couldn't be bothered walk straight in! A bit annoying, however the museum when inside is very interesting lots of things to see, it's basically a walk through of the history of not just York but Britain throughout the ages. Lots of childhood memories stirred. The war exhibition was very sombre, the video reel of the Apache helicopter was particularly harrowing and just shows the worst of war. There is a small cafe, gift shop and toilets on site. I would give yourself a good couple of hours to get through all the exhibitions.
G. W.
Great museum. Visited with family and it was informative and fun.
J. P. P.
Went last week and enjoyed it very much. We love history and spent around 3 hours here the place was very well laid out with lots to see. Would recommend the place to any history lovers.
M. M.
Excellent value for money, very interesting, worth the admission for the Victorian Street alone
D. W.
It is a great place to visit and with looking at history too
M. B.
Great museum showing the history of York with a wonderful range of exhibits.
K. B.
Beautiful place :) definitely worth seeing!
S. W.
Visited here today wow it was amazing such a great day out there is so much history to learn about but there is so much to see it would take a few hours to get round the only thing is because there isn't much room in some places you feel abit rushed but will definitely going back
C. T.
The staff went to a lot of trouble manage the staging of admission to the Museum. They had to continuously repeat instructions and arrangements for entrance, and there was no sign of any irritation, they treat everyone with courtesy and respect.
There was a guide dressed as a
First World War lieutenant, he was extremely knowledgeable, managing to convey the causation of the war in about 10 minutes, a pleasure to listen to him. Every member of staff was approachable if needed.
The exhibits, and presentation of them are excellent. A great amount of care and work has obviously taken place to inform visitors of the stories, or uses of artifacts. It really was a great visit.
R. S.
A day which we decided to visit the York Castle Museum. Particularly enjoyed the Victorian street. Our tour guide was also very knowledgeable about the surroundings, and was open to queries which he answered greatly. Well worth the visit with family and friends.
A. A.
Soooooo much to see! Fantastic place stuffed with info & sights👍👍👍
C. K.
Well worth the money. Loads to do and see. At least three hours needed to see it all.
B. E.
Fantastic 2hrs recommend this to old and young alike well worth trip down from Scotland
T. T.
Enjoyed the visit. The exhibits are very interesting especially the prisoner interaction.
C. B.
Not sure this is the best museum in York. Given the time again I would probably have spent more time in the railway museum. The old street is fine, not that interesting. Fashion through history exhibit probably the highlight for me, that did have some surprises.
O.
Very good museum very informative will visit again
h. l.
The museum was really good, loved walking through and learning about olden days York. Activity trail for the kids and the shopkeepers giving you historical info. Really well done.
F. A.
Not your average boring museum, this museum is absolutely amazing particularly the old victoriana st (kirkgate) such a treat to be transported back in time to experience life as it was. Definitely stick this on your list of things to do on your next visit to the historical city of York.
a.
Really fun and exciting, the Victorian street is a must see
d. n.
Lovely place to visit. Very well done with smells and sounds. Do not miss the water mill!
N. F.
Really impressed going here, there were a lot of exhibits and the victorian street was a real treat. Could have spent a lot longer in here is we wanted to
R. F.
Great recreation of Victorian village plus saw Castle dungeons. Had a great time
V. H.
very interesting good value for money
T. G.
A large portion of York's history can be found in this lovely museum
b. M.
Great place. My kids really enjoyed it
D. M.
Absolutely amazing friendly staff and so helpful, very impressed for a 1st visit
A. P.
My fiance and I visited the Victorian section of the museum recently. We were impressed by the amount of detail in the recreated Victorian street. Our experience was enhanced by our tour guide Yousef, who has immense knowledge on the era and was open to answering all of our questions. He was an attentive guide and ensured our safety by being extremely mindful of current pandemic restrictions.
York Castle Museum is well worth the visit.
A. M.
Brilliant museum covers a wide range of York history especially good was the Victorian Christmas exhibit I would have given 5 stars but possibly due to COVID there were not many staff about giving info about the shops and Victorian shopping experience
R. L.
Fascinating but writing on description cards in clothing exhibit to small to read a to low down
I. G.
It was great we have a lovely time so much to see
A. D.
Its a fantastic place to visit and you need a good few hours to go round.
D. W.
Plenty to see. Can use hours or many photos of all the signs to read.
M. T. O.
Excellent Museum plenty of local York history
J.
Such a great surprise, full of really interesting - and varied - exhibits and the staff working there were incredibly knowledgeable (shout out to the guy in the WWI section, really knew his stuff)
Can't recommend it highly enough!
J. B.
Really interesting. The street scene was really good with character shop keepers. Would definitely recommend. Spent around two hours there
M. B.
Quite good, bit of an odd mix of periods, WW1, Victorian, 1960's, didn't really seem to be on any particular order. Also could do with some kids activity sheets to keep them busy. The Victorian street part is quite good though.
H. W.
Lovely day out. Easy to check in with prebooked tickets. When asked if they had baby carrier as stated on website they brought out afew different styles to suit different ages. While walking around the guides where very knowledgeable and more than happy to show you where to go and share information. We where some of the last to leave but not once did I feel rushed by the staff. Very chatty and friendly. Will definitely be returning with my annual ticket.
A. A.
A great museum full of all different history, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly.
The area it's in is also a lovely area if you want to pack a picnic and sit looking at the views of Clifford tower..
Highly reccomend for anyone who likes history
A. P.
Great day out for the family, with lots to see and experience. Brilliantly presented with some fantastic recreations.
D. T.
Leave plenty of time as time flies as you enjoy the displays and exibits
I. R.
Excellent day out. Very interesting spent 3 hours here worth the entrance fee. Definitely a must when in York.
C. C.
It was very interesting and great place to visit. But not if your disabled a mobility scooter/wheel chair can only access 1 floor, so you miss out on 2 floors and that's a shame.
C. C.
It is a magnific museum to know about of live of people of York since ancient times until this days. You should to visit.
P. B. R.
Had a great morning looking round the museum. The items from everyday life from the past are displayed as a series of rooms and shop fronts. A great place to go if you visit york.
I. R.
Excellent day out.. Spent 3 hours walking around, lots of things to see. Great value for money
C. C.
If you go to york its a place you definately want to go x
S. H.
Lots to see and experience. The highlight definitely being the recreated victorian cobbled street with shops and staff in character to explain the day to day life.
M. C.
Enjoyable couple of hours wandering around this museum
J. W.
Enjoyed looking at all the best artefacts in the museum. Very disappointed with the cafe. Not much food on offer. Not enough tables to eat off. Not ideal to put hot drinks on the floor. Would give 1 out of 10. Very poor.
G. H.
Great walk through time, with sets artifacts and costumed people giving extra information.
C. B.
I hate to be negative, but not sure about this one, its rather expensive and has a lack of identity. Like i couldnt tell you what the museum is about? The 3 stars are for the victorian Street, quite atmospheric... Everything else was just a bit meh all in all! Walked away with little impression left from our visit.
O. T.
What a great day our family had. Lots to see and do. The Dickensian street was just Wow. Thank you for a great Christmas event 👍
A. K.
We took the Victorian Street tour on May 23rd 2021 so in the last stages of lockdown. We loved the tour, which was interesting, educational, and detailed in display down to the aromas! Our tour guide Alan was the best in the entire experience. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic about the tour and the subject matter and was happy to answer any questions. Thank you and we hope to visit again!
S. U.
Fascinating place. The Victorian street is amazing. Very nostalgic.
I. G.
Great way to spend a couple of hours, very informative an the staff were great
D. L.
Visit this place before you visit anywhere else in York! The team really helps you understand and bring York to life.
A. W.
Fantastic visit to York and York Castle Museum. Plenty to do and see a mixture of everything that is the history of York a must visit.....🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
J. P.
A really interesting museum that offers something for everyone. Very well kept over the years with enthusiastic staff. Highly recommended!
C. R. D.
Best museum ever. Not only do you have your average museum displays, but also you get a whole immersive experience. You feel as if you were walking in the streets of York over 100 years ago. You can walk through the alleys and go inside the shops, where very knowledgeable staff/actors give you a detailed explanation of how things used to be back then. Also, there's fun costumes and props for photos.
O. J.
Very friendly and helpful staff on the front desk, great setup for those with young children and buggies, and such a good range of exhibits. The park and ride stops very close by.
E. B.
We had an entrance time of 2:30pm. The museum closed at 4pm and we could easily have filled at least another hour in there. Such an amazing museum! Possibly the best museum we have ever visited.
A. O.
I loved this museum. It was very informative.
S. H.
Great place to show some of the more modern history of York from around 1500 onwards. Kids will love it as well as adults.
P. G.
I was a little disappointed in the experience. One or two interesting exhibits but the rest were a bit bland with a somewhat haphazard feel to them. I was left wondering what the musiem was trying to portray. Too much content and not enough focus for me to recommend it I'm afraid
M. B.
Great place to visit. Lots to see and marvel at. Strange to see things that we had as children are now museum pieces. How times change 😁
N. E.
Great place to see very impressive lots to do brill day out
D. D.
Very good day out loads to see and learn 😁
E. S.
Great seeing toys and food from childhood, and the Victorian street
