Reviews of York City Walls
I. A.
York has retained so much of its medieval structure that walking into its centre or around its 3 mile long ( 4.8 km ) Ancient city walls is like entering a living museum. Amazing experience! Be aware of no security fences in place in some parts along the pathway. The wall's gates close at dusk. Must be seen. Such a free of charge wonder!
I. L.
this took us a few hours as we stopped frequently to look at the views. Was a lot of fun. Its around 4km distance to walk. Its not continuous- but easy to pick up when the wall runs out. Highly recommend

Not every city has ancient walls you can walk around!! Great scenery away from the bustling crowds. Be a little mindful though, some places have a drop at the side without any fencing so keep an eye on any children you have with you. A great way to get into the city centre, easy enough to do a full lap as well, some steep stairs along the way.
M. C.
Really enjoyed being able to see and walk around the old city walls. Not something you’re still able to do in most towns/cities these days. Throughly pleasant for a stroll and gives some nice view points too.
A.
Our hotel thankfully collected our bags for us upon arrival so we entered the wall straight from the rail station and followed it to the other side of town. It was a pleasant walk, some parts fairly narrow, especially if there was a passing by group or family. Most dangerous parts did have a railing for safety.
You do need to climb some steep stairs in some parts, particularly near the gates. I'd recommend a dry day over a wet one for this activity.
Definitely do include at least some part of the wall on your visit to York
m. c.
Well worth doing the walk on the city walls around York. Although missing in places finding the next section to carry on the full lap is easy enough. Just make sure you have Google maps or similar. Lovely views of the city from many parts of the wall and the gate houses are spectacular. For a small charge you can go into one of the gate houses and look around, has information boards and film playing.
S. E.
Loved walking round the city walls, there are gaps between the walls but it's really well marked with maps and place markers so you won't get lost. Amazing views of the city. If like me you go round with kids you may need to offer some encouragement as there are a lot of steps but my 4 year old managed it.
M. W.
Wandering round the City Walls is well worth your time. Even when all the cool kids are packed in tight at bars, restaurants and shops, you can find fresh air, beautiful homes, and scenery up on the walls. This, with the added bonus that it would be difficult to catch covid here, since social distancing is pretty much built in. Get some exercise while seeing the grandeur of York.
D. J. K.
The York city wall was the very first point of interest in York, it’s very easy to climb and you get a better view of the surrounding area. Unfortunately, some parts of the wall doesn’t have rails, which makes it risky. It’s not suitable for children in my opinion. Other than that it’s a very nice place to take a walk.
W. G.
Absolutely fantastic, historic, busy and free
Just over a 3 mile walk with a lot of stairs.
Cation…. Open edge of the rampart leading to a 1st floor fall, sure there must have been a few folks fallen or had near misses 😮
r. t.
Great place to take a walk , with good weather ! Can't imagine it was built do ling time ago, it was so well maintained ! There are a lot to see on the wall , we could look over the city area from the wall. They have numerous sitting area that visitors could enjoy bathing under the sun.
F. S.
The York city walls are the perfect self prescribed tour of this gem of a city. The walls are mostly intact and traversable for the most of the route, however there is a section that requires traveling down a main road for 1/4 mile before returning to the wall. Maps are presented at various points to give you an idea of where you are. All in all, we had a lovely time walking around the city, taking in the various sights!
A. H.
We did the whole wall and felt great accomplishment.. views nice, history boards interesting and there were seats from time to time lol. Not great if you struggle with stairs as there is a fair amount of up and down..but we just took our time and did at our pace. FREE...
S. D.
Walking on York City Walls is the best thing for the legs as it is at least a 2 hour or more walk to complete a circuit. I tried but my legs got tired. Next time, my mission is to complete the walk. I witnessed the sunset and it was just so beautiful. I love it.
S. P.
A nice way to enjoy nature n explore the quaint place. Refreshing n slightly adventurous. Strongly recommend. Takes about 3hrs to slowly walk n sink the experience
S. B.
It is amazing to explore these Roman walls surrounding the city (you can do it in a day but we took our time and explored taking photos etc). It is so good to see the English preserve these historical architecture so thar they can be enjoyed by all. At some places the stairways are so narrow, that only one person can pass and at some other points, there are no barriers to prevent a drop (but it's not dangerous, however best to avoid walking with children). Loved the experience
W. I.
Good place to visit, different city from other cities, good for those who loves history, shops closes earlier that's negative point. There's harry porter shop in shambles, over all the shambles over rated place, just normal street.
n. c.
Long walk on the walls. But really worth to look and Beautiful views 😍 A bit crowded as people walking down...but definitely if you are in york. Then must get an experience 👍
J. F.
Beautiful walls, makes a great 1.5 hour walk!! So much history and culture, great views, really incredible experience all in all.
K. B.
There are parts of the medieval wall that once surrounded York dotted around the city. Due to their age it is no longer complete but you can walk around on top of a lot of the wall and it can be a good way to get around the city
S. B.
Walking along walls that have been around for hundreds of years on a sunny cold Sunday morning? Yeah why not! Was a good time of the day to go as there were very few people on the walls. Be warned - some sections don’t have railings and there are some steep steps to navigate around the route. Gives a great opportunity for pictures of York Minster and if you time it right you can grab an amazing breakfast at Brew & Brownie
A.
If you're visiting York, this is an experience you must do. While not a continuous wall, it's very easy to find the start points on a quick map/Google search. I personally started at Micklegate Bar and walked counter clockwise.
The whole walk took around an hour, some parts are wide, and some very narrow, lots of stairs too, so the experience is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues.
Some of the Bar's are accessible and one on the east side has been converted to a cafe, which you can get on the roof of.
It's all free too, although it does close during certain times of the day, so plan your trip accordingly.
D. H.
This is pure ancient history and needs to be walked to gain its full magnitude. I suggest starting at the Monk Bar gate and walking along the wall towards York Minster, taking photographs on the way. Look out for the Lewis Carrolls statue figures of the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland as you walk
A. T.
It was good experience to walk this walls and see the city from different perspectives . It is also good that this historical marvels are being still kept and maintained . They are free to use and they are not continuous so you have to walk them in parts . You have some really great parts where the view of the city is amazing . So try it .
M. M.
This is a great attraction and totally free. It took me 1.5 hours to do a complete circuit, the best views are along the section of the Wall which skirts York Minster. Be prepared for a few step climbs. I think it would be better to have a one direction flow on the wall, either clockwise or anticlockwise doesn't matter. I say this not because of Covid, but the Wall is quite narrow in places and not all the wall has railings to stop you from going over the edge, albeit the biggest drops do.
It's pretty easy to navigate the complete path of the Wall using the notices or map at various points along the route. There are several stretches of pavement where the Wall no longer exists.
M. H.
While visiting the Museum Gardens it started to rain slightly, but had allready decided we wanted to go to the Railway Museum. On our way there we walked over a part of the historical city walls that in the past were there to protect the city from enemies. I asked a nice Nigerian couple if I should make a picture of them, in return they would do the same. They agreed, we did so and said our "akhbar" and "dankjewel" 🥰👍🏻🥰🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬.
C. H.
Some beautiful parts but there’s a very strong handed man who comes and closes them at night. Why does a wall even need to close? Ridiculous.
Having said that. There are some nice walks to take in.
D.
Steeped in history York is one of the oldest cities in the UK with plenty to see and do for all ages. The walls are incredibly well preserved and a wonderful example of a true British old walled city.
D. b.
The walls are great, I would recommend going on a dry day though as some parts are quite steep and narrow. The views are amazing along the wall and there are passing points as well, as you walk along the wall you have to come down in parts and pick the wall up again a bit further down the road, we found all the bits but could see how you could miss parts if you were not paying attention and I would sergeant that better signage would help a lot.
R. K.
Absolutely fantastic and steeped in history. Loved our visit to York - such an interesting place and so well kept👍😍
G. T.
Worth making the effort to do at least some of the walls if your going to York, especially the ones around the Minster, as you really do get to see it from a different view point.
The only things I’d say is if you’re a bit “Covid” then it may not be for you as quite often you will be squeezing by others or having to wait stars. Also, as you should expect some very steep and narrow steps to climb so if you’re not great on your feet may be wise to avoid!
L. W.
Good to walk around although the wall doesn't go the whole way around the city so there are a few sets of stairs to climb. Most of the wall had no guard rail at the back so small children and elderly folk will need to take care.
H. C. M.
An amazing way to see this brilliant & historical city along this impressive structure, well worth a walk around with fantastic views over various different parts of the city
M. R.
Your able to walk the entire length of this wall with nice views of the city
R. K.
Fantastic sights of and from a historic Medieval City Wall, the steps are steep to get up to the walkways but not difficult, anyone who can climb a flight of stairs at home should have no difficulty. The walls give a great view of the Minster and the City. Well worth the effort.
C.
Walking along a piece of history, learning about it, seeing the sights — and all for free.
Some tiles on the floor even detail landmarks nearby, and there's a sign at the end of one of the walls to tell you about etchings such as the noughts and crosses in one stone.
Great way to spend time and spot locations you want to visit. It can be narrow in places and some parts don't have railings. This didn't bother my friend or me, but may be worth considering. Dogs aren't allowed up here.
J. L.
Great as long as you don't suffer from vertigo at various points. Don't take the very young. Comparable to the walls of the old city of Jerusalem in terms of views and safety (where I wouldn't take a toddler) - but these are free, so there are more walkers and you have to negotiate who walks on the safe side ...... More and higher railings please.
J. J.
Had a great time walking around the York City Walls. Definitely recommend and will go again. Amazing view.
J. W.
Really enjoyed an evening stroll around the walls and needed it to walk off all the cake and tea from Betty's! The pathways were clean and well signposted. We enjoyed reading the information signs around the walls. Was fairly quiet too so nice to take our time and not be rushed or feel like we were in a queue.
J. M.
Enjoyed the city wall very much. Walked along one section of it several times as a shortcut to get back to my accommodation. I now wish every place had a city wall! Would love to walk the entire wall one day, but as York is so compact I don't think it would take very long to walk it all.
j. e.
Great way to view the city and get from one side of town to the other
K. H.
The walkways are tidy, easy to walk and well maintained. It's a great walk around the city to see what's around.
R. J.
Amazing place to have a look around York and views are fantastic.
D. M.
Nice walk where you can see the city from every angle. Some nice views on route. Lots of place to stop for drinks on the way or just plod on. Allow at least a couple of hours for the full circuit
T.
It was a great walk but sometimes its a bit of a puzzle to follow the walking route.
J. S.
A real pleasure to walk these walls. The York City walls we can these days see were mainly built in the Middle Age, around the 13th century, and they were set on earthen ramparts. York’s Roman Walls are mainly hidden in these ramparts. You need to go up and down several times if you want to complete the whole wall. There is also an area where there wasn’t a wall as it was protected naturally by water.
W. W.
Go up come down whenever you want a bit narrow in places but just lovely and its FREE what are you waiting for!!!!
R. B.
A wonderful walk around the outside of the old city. Fantastic and unusual views of the Minster and many other medieval buildings, plus an amazing view of the curving glass roof of the railway station. The daffodils look fantastic in March and April, then they are followed by cherry blossom in April/May and the flower beds from May through to September The whole walk is just under two miles but you can get on or off in lots of places. A couple of excellent little museums in Monk Bar (Richard III) and Micklegate Bar (Henry VII). Several good little cafes as well.
Narrow in places and with some steep stairways; parts of the walk need you to keep a close eye on your children.
O. T.
Just lovely to experience a city with so much (interactive) history! These medieval walls are lovely to walk along and take in the city of York. Like some other reviews have said, you have to go up and down multiple times but worth it for the breath-taking views!
Not wheelchair accessible.
M. O.
Fantastic walks and great scenery, highly recommend visiting the postern Gate.
M. R.
Love the walk around the York walls. It gives you a totally different view of the city, and you find some beautiful views and surprisingly some peaceful locations. Plus, it is free.
T. M.
Stunning walk along such historic walls. It can take a couple of hours to walk all of the walls but plenty of breaks where you can get off and explore elsewhere. The best way to see some of Yorks most picturesque views.
R. K.
That's great experience for everyone, you can pick your own long or short walk.
T. E.
Very lovely walk around the city centre among the walls. Gives great views of some landmarks like the Minster, but also a very aesthetic feature in their own right, and very walkable and adaptable, we walked all the way round but broke the walk up into two chunks.
P. j. S.
The best way to see York and all around on and from the Bar walls fantastic views and places to see and visit all free to access from the walls
D. H.
Great walk, more challenging than expected!
A. J.
By far my favourite thing to do in York. Before I came I thought this was just some walls and ruins that you could walk close to in a loop around the city but it's actually essentially like a bridge that you walk on so you get excellent views and it's a really great experience and a nice way to get around. It took us about 1.5 hours and we only did around half of them!
T. L.
A great place to see the city of York.
T.
Lovely walk around the town . But lots of walking 🚶♀️
S. J. (. T.
Amazing experience walking along York City Walls. Great view.
I. E.
One of the best things to do when in York is walk the city walks.
W. C.
An absolutely amazing piece of history still there today. Amazing sights to be seen from the city walls with numerous photo opportunities and history to tell along the way. Will definitely be returning soon!
P. C.
Over 40 years since my last visit to York! Why so long? No idea, as it's a great place, certainly in my top 5 places in UK. The walk around the walls is a great way to see parts of the city.
R. L.
What a fantastic city, walk the walls you won’t regret it. We found loads of interesting places to eat and drink just walking the walls
a. b.
Great way to spend a nice morning. Next time I will book a tour. Nice walk not very difficult had my 10 year old with me.
J. H.
It's really nice to stroll around the city wall and enjoy different perspectives of this lovely city
S.
They are far too longer than I expected, they take you around the city.
S. R.
Walked the wall each day i was there i loved it! Great way of getting round the city. There is a 1 way direction in place to keep distance unfortunately a lot of people egnore this!
A. P. S.
Pretty fun to walk around. The whole thing is about 2 miles long but the best parts are between Micklegate Bar and Monk Bar going clockwise. Walking this piece of the city wall also let's you walk through the garden of the old abbey that was just outside the city wall. The ruins of the abbey are beautiful. We actually couldn't find where to pick the wall back up again, but just kept walking through a sculpture garden and did find it again.
p. e.
What can I say, they circumnavigate York, not entirely, broken uo to 4 sections I think, I walked a couple of them and they are very interesting to look at and also take in the views from the higher points
D. W.
Lovely walk with some of the best views over York and the Cathedral
D. L.
A beautiful walk around a fantastic city. Well managed in these post covid times, you have to walk clockwise around the city!
T. I.
Interesting and very unusual walking trail.
Spectacular and breathtaking views. Many opportunities for taking great pictures.
K. T.
Only went half way round but liked that they were free and had marked paths when trying to navigate the scary road sections.
A. S.
Over priced parking. £1.70 an hour is expensive and doesn't encourage people to stay longer and support local businesses. Nice place to visit though.
A. L.
Very peaceful and pleasant walk. Takes about an hour and the view from the raised walk can be quite spectacular.
G. L.
Fantastic walk around the York city. Very well kept.
J. N.
Lovely walk along the walls. Pretty crowded in places but it was a Bank Holiday weekend after all.
M. H.
A lovely walk which offers lovely views of the city. However, some parts of the wall have no railings.
J. P.
Walked all around the walls and used as a shortcut for years, fantastic history and views of the city.
J. E.
Wonderful way to see the sights of York. Really well preserved and some great properties on route.
W. W.
Great return-on-investment experience. Also a good way to spy out other areas of the city you’d like to see next
B. F.
Amazing to walk around on a sunny day! Had a very slow trek around with a couple of breaks on the way and it took about 2 and a half hours. Lots of amazing views of the beautiful York
D. K.
York as anyone will tell you is always very pretty. Unfortunately we went on a very wet weekend after attending a wedding in Skipton. Walking along the wall is a must and gives you a sense of the city and does seem to be a great way to get across it. I dread to think how busy the wall is during the peak summer months.
v. s.
An amazing experience of the city with beautiful views. Note that you can access them in parts and it takes going down and up the stairs to continue to the next chunk of the walls.
C. Y.
Lovely walk to explore the Old York City/Town. Entry through Bootham Bar. I didn’t have the time to complete the full walk but could already tell you’d get wonderful view of York Minister, house yards, cafes, etc.
M. U.
Mixed pictures from City of York. Beautiful old City to visit and a lots of things to see around 😍
R. c.
Super fun, about 2 miles of wall. Narrow in places not suitable for wheelchair users.
V. Q.
Good walk around the walls most of it there but keep an eye on signs to get to the bits missing.
C. B.
Cool walk around York
K. H.
Lovely walk with some scenic views
C. W.
Beautiful City. Nice time with my family...
B. R.
Lovely little walk
One of the walls has no fence, just the wall on one side
This could be an issue for a person with balance problems/fear of heights
T. A.
Great walk around the walls, lots to see and read
A. L.
Been walking thee walls as part of a challenge to raise money for charity and still not bored of them. Love walking on history.
A. C.
The section by the Minister has some great views into the gardens.
L. F.
Lovely walk providing incredible views of York Minster and surrounding sites. The city wall full walk takes around 2 hours while passing through several bars (fortified gateways) including Monk Bar which contains the Richard III experience museum & gift shop.
A. G.
York is such a wonderful place to visit so much to see and do
L. M.
Beutiful! I ended up here by mistake and it was awesome, full of history.
j. d.
Lovely to walk around. You can feel the history.
H. E.
For us as a family, walking the walls was a highlight during our visit to York. The strech from Bootham to c/o Jewbury and Peasholme was the best strech with beautiful views of the York Minster. My kids loved it and its pretty save - unfortunately you can only access it by stairs.
B. D.
Nice walks around the city however be careful when walking past others as not all the path is fenced/secured.
J. P.
An very interesting walk, quite easy, only 2 miles, but that's only if you don't stray to go and see other things close by!
M. J.
Been around the walls many times but never tire of it. A 'must do' when visiting the city but be aware of the one way (clockwise) system in place during the pandemic.
The best bit is around the back of the Minster in my opinion.
C. S.
As walls go, they really do keep the riffraff out of the nice parts of the city. I mean... Just like a wise old man's teeth, there are a few gaps in it these days, but you can't blame them. They've stood the test of time. You can also walk all over them, as long as you've got them boot that are made for walking.
p. f.
Historic Interest and great views. Well worth taking the time for a walk round the walls. Take a camera.
T. 0.
I spent some time here in York back in 2001 when I was travelling around the U.K and took the chance to explore most of the old citywall and gates, and of course the old keep.
I still remember it as it was yesterday.
Most of the wall and gates are still in very good condition and almost intact all the way around the city centre.
It's a good walk around and I really recommende doing it if you have some time to spend.
D. L.
As described its a wonderful view of city away from hussle and bussle 😆
H. D.
Some beautiful scenery. Wall walkways were very clean.
N. K.
It was great to walk around the walls.
P. N.
Didn't walk around the walls this time but you do get chance to see York city center from a different view.
A. R.
A great day out in York on a very hot day! You can walk sections you don't need to do it all.
I. H.
Picturesque, beautiful with a rough beauty that's a joy to behold. Very much worth the walking around.
j. b.
Oh the best 👌 but stairs are steep especially by Monkbar
n.
Worth a visit to the historic city walls. It's approximately a 4 mile walk all the way round with some good views across the city. Make sure you leave time to drop into the centre for good food and shopping. There are a few car parks right next to the walls I usually use Foss bank. Alternatively there are park and rides and it's fairly cycle friendly too.
K. K.
Wow! Can't think of any other experience like this, with access to the walls totally free and a must see as part of any visit to wonderful York. There are a number of different sections, with it possible to do a whole lap of central York by joining these up. Great views with such cool history.
M. R.
A great way to view the city. It's about two miles to do a full circuit.
k. c.
The walls are easy to access but the general lack of planning permission let the areas down due to lots of out of place building design.
L. A.
Another interesting walk along city walls offering spectacular views of the Minster. We entered at Bootham Bar which offers a large section of the wall to explore.
J. Y.
The best way to walk around York. Fun in itself and a brilliant way to visit places around the city.
H. K.
Beautiful stroll around the old town, most if not all of the walls are accessible on foot through gates and stairs located at specific parts of York.
Very nice views of the town and the gardens, and a nice stroll through history.
Definitely recommended to walk the walls, take photos and enjoy the scenery. Good walking shoes might be required, the stones get quite slippery on a rainy day.
C. H.
We love the history and majesty of this beautiful city and go fairly regularly .
S. K.
If you feel energetic it's definitely worth a walk round. Get to see loads
I. D.
Great way to see the city. Find your feet if visiting
M. H.
Even though the weather wasn't the best it didn't detract from the unique perspective that a walk around the walls gives over the city itself. Only completed around a third of the available sections but will certainly be back to complete the more southern sections. It is currently one way (clockwise) and most access points are clearly marked as entry or exit only, and thankfully the vast majority of visitors are complying. Some sections can be quite narrow and you could feel a little hurried if there is a fast moving group behind you but there are frequent sections (old turrets?) that allow plenty of space for you to take a break and allow them to pass. The breaks in the wall serve nicely to enable you to pause your journey and take in some of the shops and bars within.
J. B.
What a fantastic walk. Beautiful and historic
P. G.
Beautiful day for a walk on the walls.
R. R.
Beautiful, well maintained walls, a nice hour long walk around the city
A. L.
Cant go wrong with a free activity when you have children. Great way to see the city and learn a bit of history too with plenty of information points along the walk. Can get a little busy on the stairs but even at peak time we didn't have to wait long.
R. B.
Enjoyable historic walk with some great views 👌
A. A.
It’s a cool experience walking on the walls of york, plus it’s free.
M. V.
Nice free activity to do. This gives you a great look into a lovely city.
李.
It's a really nice place
M. B.
Lovely walk around York, with some great views. And it's all free.
A. C.
Was beautiful to walk the city walls, only shame was some parts were closed due to restoration but is to be expected with something so old.
D. S.
Relaxing wall around the York wall takes about 90mins including a coffee half way around
S. W.
Bootham bar to Monk bar. Really liking the one way system in place along the walls. Beautiful views of York Minster. Lots of interesting fact & sights to discover. Walls are in different sections to walk along.
A. S.
Very nice preserved wall. Not like ruins everywhere else.
M. M.
Nice walk around the city with exquisite views
N. U.
Wonderfull. You can see whole city by only walking
I. M.
Centuries of history with stunning views over this fine City.
S. a. s. T.
Love the walk round the walls and a few good coffee shops on route check them out
D. “. Z.
Beautiful place! Very picturesque and historical
B. W.
Great walk with fabulous views of the city!
C. F.
Fabulous place ,a must is the Minster, and the walls ,plenty of old traditional pubs,B and Bs pricey but worth it
J. S.
Incredible piece of history and very well-maintained. I recommend coming just to see these.
S. M.
Was a brilliant time. Lovely scenery. See more on a clear day.
e.
Beautiful views and the best way to explore the city. Stunning view of the Minister. Only thing is there wasn’t that much information about the walls (which is positive because you didn’t end up standing in a long queue) but would’ve been nice to learn a bit more about the history of York as we went along. Also, for anyone with a physical disability or anyone that’s elderly, there are steep parts and the stone can get slippery if it’s rained. No railings as well during sections of it.
s. b.
Great views across York from the City Walls.
D. B.
Walking the walls is a great way to see the city. There are some very good pars and some grotty parts. Do the walk, it's free and you will enjoy it. You visit to York isn't complete without seeing the city from the top of the wall.
M. L.
2 mile walk around the city. Such history. Loved it. A must in York.
B. H.
Great place to walk,excellent views
S. R.
Fantastic walk with some lovely views of the city
B.
Great way to walk around the City, you can get down to street level at certain points along the wall. Unsuitable for people who are unsteady on their feet, don't like heights or require a wheel chair. No dogs allowed and keep a hold of young children as some parts of the wall are really high with no safety barriers or railings.
J. B.
A free activity to do when visiting York. There's signage all along so they you can find your way back to the walls when there isn't access.
The parts where it is higher up have railings but there are areas where you could fall off the side although the drop isn't huge. Just worth thinking about with kids as the path can be lumpy and easy to trip.
The view are beautiful and as you go around you can see the cathedral from sifferent angles giving you an idea of how far around the city you have come.
It says it takes 2 hours but it didn't take me that long. I was on a time limit though so I probably didn't take as long to stop and look as others might. The whole thing is about 1.5miles but it does feel longer.
C. P.
Great way to unwind and see the city !
s. p. E.
Fantastic place to see and to walk on round the city
R. Z.
A good 360 degrees walk and exercise with the york wall was beautiful
V.
York City walls is a must go place if you are in york, you will experience great view of city.
D. R.
One of the best ways to see York and enjoy its history. Best to go in warm sunny weather!
G. c.
Really good walk around the city.
R. b.
Well maintained and covers several land marks. In our experience it closes at 8pm.
K. P.
These walls are magnificent and their old structure has been maintained strongly, giving a look over a good portion of York. It is easy to enter or exit through the staircases, which continue an old style too.
T. P.
Remarkably well preserved and almost complete city wall walk.
A. H.
Lovely walk along the wall, quite narrow in places and quite a few steps to go up and down. Plenty of information boards along the way giving the history, a few places you can come off the wall for refreshments in the cafes and pubs. No dogs are allowed on the wall.
J. O.
Loved our walk round the walls, nit done it for years. Be aware it's not good if you don't like heights, and some portions don't have railings at the side
S. N.
A walk with a beautiful view
M. M.
If visiting, better to spend your time in York walking the walls on a sunny day
A. J.
Whilst walking the walls, you can see all the beautiful views over York.
M. A.
What an amazing wall wrapped around the city almost. After many centuries still standing.
c. m.
Great views and loads to learn about . Defo go back with family
S. S.
The york city walls are an excellent way to spend an hour or so. While they have not survived intact, the section breaks force you to interact with the town and see the way it has changed from the time when the walls were its limits. Also a fun place to pretend you are a medieval city defender..no matter how old you are.
Try the cafes that you meet when walking along it- a very interesting experience.
C. M.
It's a wall, nothing to get over excited about but it's a great and different vista of the city.
T. H.
Its a lovely place to take a stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. Completing a full circuit (as best you can) is a lively way to spend an hour or so. The walls offer a unique perspective of some of the famous sights.
G. F.
Amazing place. But the toilet should be free.
J. H.
Got to love York, it's so full of our history and should be preserved.
L. G.
Walk around the walls of the medieval city of York. A lovely free activity that kids love.
A. T.
Great for evening walk and seeing the sights
M. G.
Well what can I say some interesting parts but generally walking along wall looking at people's houses we got half way round and decided to leave it how ever their is a very nice cafe situated oon the wall itself of very trendy and comfy very interesting it is small but a beautiful place to sit very cleverly laid out and very well built into the original stone building well worth a visit pop along you may even get a discount if you mention me! 😉
F. B.
Fantastic (and free) walk along York's City Wall. Absolutely recommendable.
S. G.
Lovely city.
Lots to do. Quite compact.
Recommend a visit
Parking expensive
G. D.
They are what they are - great views of the city and surrounding areas - probably take about an hour to walk all round - even longer if you keep stopping off along the wall
J.
Great city York well worth a visit lovely people
P. F.
Great day out to experience a little culture and history.
E. L.
York has 2 sets of city walls: the ones left behind by the Romans, parts of which can still be seen, and the mediaeval walls which you can walk around. The walk takes about an hour (assuming you are not dawdling!) and is a good way to see York from all angles. You can get some great photos from the walls but try not to hold people up who are behind you and wanting to pass, as the walkway is not always very wide and there can be a bit of a drop to fall down if it all goes wrong! At one point there is a coffee stop built in to the walls themselves so make time for a break when you get there - it's amazing!
You'll love York City Walls.
M. C. d. l. C.
Pleasant walk around York, with some nice photos opportunities. Best at around 8am just after it opens, but before it gets busy. Some more explanations or diagrams around the wall would be helpful to better understand the design and defensive features as well as reasons for some of the later modifications.
j. m.
Great walk around but you cant take dogs on the wall
P. N.
Very interesting how these were constructed so many years ago without the modern technology we now have. North section is a bit boring as the main views are of people's back gardens of their houses which must be circa 1960. South and west sides give more interesting views.
w. c.
We loved the walk on the wall today, especially since it was a nice and sunny day. Lots of other people about enjoying the views from the wall as well. Shame some of them couldn't follow the one way system in place. The wall isn't wheelchair accessible so keep that in mind.
I. P.
Love walking the walls...makes me glad to live here
M. G. L.
One of the best ways to do while in York. The city walls have three sections, and two of them are wonderful, the third is in a slightly more boring part of the city. I recommend to do the full loop before exploring the inside of the old city. And the views of the minster are irreplaceable! Fully recommended!
S. P.
Thoroughly enjoyed the walk round the walls. Great views and completely free! Would go again and get a tour
H. 3.
Great walk, great weather
K. M.
Fantastic to be able to walk these old defensive Walls !
L. G.
Sent a few days here. Loads to do. Can get busy. Loads of eating places and pubs serving food.
A. M.
Nice views, pathway a bit narrow in places
J. C.
The scenery was great on the walls, and actually you can visit the walls from several spots all over the city, for example, from Bootham bar near York Art Gallery, and it's convenient. Worth a visit.
E. M.
An interesting walk around the inner city providing some good vantage points. There are some excellent views of the minster available and the information sign give a glimpse into the history of this fascinating city.
I. G.
Fantastic to walk around and see a different view of the city. Pack a flask and have a stroll all the way round or nip on and off to explore the city and the hidden gems you see. Great views of York Minster too.
w. t.
It’s free to walk on old City walls n have beautiful views of the city. It takes more then an hour to complete the circle but worth. It’s up high from the ground so enjoy the views around. B a part of history by walking there.
T. S.
I love history and the more historical things a city has, the happier I am. York city walls are brilliant, the most complete city wall in the UK, we must not take them for granted.
C. C.
Would love to go back to Yorkshire! This place is amazing. I should have stayed longer 😍
K. S.
A lovely walk with fantastic views . Most access points have a pub close by, so plan your route carefully.
M. B.
Several sections of wall you can walk along the top of it. Perfectly fine if able bodied but steps and rather narrow for passing. Free and a nice walk.
A. M.
Well preserved walls and nice to stroll along. One of the key features of York
K. A.
A must see in York and a great experience walking the entire city walls.
p. b.
Lovely place, need to visit with more time
G. B.
Lovely walks along the walls, wear some footwear and remember it is one way at the moment due to COVID restrictions.
This does affect the start points of the walk. Also narrow in places if you are concerned about social distancing.
R. C.
Lovely sight seeing walk around York
A.
Really lovely walk, lots of places to join the wall and leave and come back later. Very picturesque. Lot's of steps so wear decent shoes.
G. W.
The walls round York are a great achievement well worth a look.
M. C.
Lovely walk around the city, some good views ( and plenty of opportunities for pub stops).
Approx 5k all round, can be a bit narrow in places.
B. F.
A lovely walk round the walls to see all of the city from a different perspective. Steeped in history and its great to imagine what historical events happened within these walls.
P. M.
Pick a dry day and the 2-3hr gentle walk is great; although not complete, there is clear and adequate signage directing you to the next part.
A. B.
York is interesting for the history, but also for shopping
d. h.
Walking the city walls is a good idea see the layout of the town centre. Missed our way a couple of times. City centre Very crowded at this time of year.
a. h.
An ideal to get around the city and view it from a different perspective. Be aware some sections can be closed for maintenance and in cases of bad weather.
R. H.
A nice way to appreciate the city.
U. Y.
Beautiful views of all the buildings, rooftop gardens, and the trees. Seeing the landmark buildings from the walls was an amazing experience.

T. W.
Super impressed with this historic city.
D. M.
Love it...beautiful place
R. J.
perfect day and a beautiful walk at the city wall
G. J.
Well worth the walk, even in the pouring rain!! The North Corner between Bootham Bar and Monk Bar is fantastic with wonderful views of the Minster and adjacent gardens.
J. E.
Enjoyed walking round York.
P. B.
Lovely walk around the walls
S. H.
When visiting York, this totally free attraction is a must! No building in the city is very tall and so fantastic views are afforded from most places upon this elevated walk of the Minster from across rooftops and old chimneys. Unlike in Chester (for example), the wall is not quite complete. There are short gaps but the continuation is generally well signposted. Note that the city walls extend both sides of the river. Allow at least an hour for a complete lap... possibly more. The walkway is narrow in places and is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
S. M.
Beautiful views of york..without a barrier on the inside edge for a large portion so not ideal for small children. Could do with some more visitor information plaques on the way around. The museums at the gates are a nice little visit and there's a great little coffee shop built into one of the gates- I think it's Walmgate bar ( not open on Sundays though) where you can sit outside on the gate if nice weather.
s. d.
A great way to view the city of York.
m. z.
Walk along the wall and its exhilarating.
D. P.
Always a pleasure to come into the centre of York.

A rainy dusk in February proved to be an excellent walk with the lights around the city glistening in the wet.

Great walk around the cathedral
P. S.
Well worth the walk if you're here. You hate a great view of the city, and some parts you would never normally see.
A. S.

There are guided walks tours as well.
E. V.
We loved the walk on the walls. Only one bit made us walk more as they are one way systém due to covid and we found the end first. So needed to find start.
P. L.
The guides will tell you it is a 2 hour walk. It took me 4 hours to do the lot. It has great views of the cathedral. Warning,, some lengths of the wall have no barriers
V. S.
Walls around the city of York. Narrow in places with no railing in parts. So beware. Incomplete and so you need to step off to find the next stretch. Great to get around the city missing crowds if you choose to.
D. B.
How many cities in Europe still have their old walls still intact.... Love York!
P. S.

lovely walk along the walls
K. S.
Not really sure how valuable it is reviewing walls built hundreds of years ago but it was a decent adventure. Took us an hour and a bit and lots of great views. The most impressive part is just the wall itself. What a wonder
D. T.
OK nice walk around
A. S.
Great little 'village shop' at Monk Bar walls entrance, all things veg and vegan, incl ice cream and chocolate.

Great for exercise and taking in views around the historical city. Narrow in places and some sheer drops. Bit confusing when you come off wall and then catch it further into town. Get prepared with map!
Z. J.
Amazing!
H. H.
The Walls are good. There are quite a few steps up or down so do not try walk if you do not like steps or places on the Wall where the path is narrow with no guard railing on one side and a drop to the ground
