Reviews of Matt Pearson Bass

Matt is a BRILLIANT bass guitar teacher. His friendliness and enthusiasm for teaching bass is amazing. As soon as I started lessons with Matt I knew I'd found a teacher (and musician) who wasn't teaching me purely for the lesson fee. He teaches because he LOVES bass and passing on his knowledge. He invariably gives me more time in the lesson than I pay for and supports me throughout the week via email or phone if I have a question or am struggling with something. His technical knowledge is immense and his music theory top notch. If you want someone to teach you bass guitar - whether you're young or old then look no further. You couldn't get a friendlier or more dedicated teacher.

Matt has been teaching my son for 3 years now. He was a total beginner and has made great progress with Matt. The lessons are really enjoyable and Matt always keeps him interested with great song selections to learn. Also Matt is a true gentleman - easy to deal with and really kind. I like my older teen son having lessons with him as he is a really good male role model too.

I've been playing drums all my life, during lockdown fancied a new challenge, so why not learn a new instrument I thought. After a few weeks of trying to learn from YouTube videos, it became clear that this was going to be an impossible task. Not only did I have very poor technique, I also needed help with music theory. I was put in touch with Matt Pearson via Rattle & Drum. After our first lesson it became clear we were going to get along very well and I was impressed with his teaching style and tailored lessons. Using the Trinity music books we began to learn a few songs whilst studying basic music theory. After 15 months I am already studying grade 4 and have a knowledge of musical notation, keys and scales. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I started learning with Matt (via Rattle and Drum) just over a year ago after deciding to take up bass. I had some previous musical experience, but after a few lessons with Matt I realised just how little I remembered of music theory!
Matt's teaching style is patient but always encouraging. I've been working through the Trinity grade books, but he makes sure that theory and proper technique are always covered as well to ensure that you not only become a good bass player, but a well-rounded musician.
Could not recommend enough. Great teacher.

From first contact over the phone, Matt made me feel 100% comfortable. Our initial bass lessons were online and the software package Matt uses, allows excellent multi-camera views so I could still make good progress. Matt is able to break down techniques into easy to understand bite-size-chunks and as a result I feel I've made swift progress, loving every lesson.
More recently, I've moved to a fortnightly longer lesson in person at the Rattle N Drum shop in Derby. Matt's calm and reassuring teaching style, together with learning interesting songs that I recognised, ensured my enthusiasm to learn more bass never faltered. I can see me learning with Matt for many years to come and his lessons have become the highlight of my working week. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Matt for any age, any ability student.

I would highly recommend Matt to anyone wishing to learn or improve their bass playing. He's a super friendly, relaxed guy with loads of knowledge and a great sense of how best to teach you. The lessons and support are excellent and I've really enjoyed playing some awesome tracks but also feeling like I'm properly learning the instrument. Cheers man!

A year ago I decided I would buy a cheap bass starter kit and get some lessons. I initially booked 4 with Matt to see how it went. At the time I thought I would never play bass. One year on I can't believe how far I've come. Matt has always been very supportive, patient and encouraging. I've done both online and one to one lessons and Matt has always been flexible with times and lesson lengths. To me it was important to be coached by a bass player rather than a guitarist and Matt is obviously a very accomplished bass player.

After just over a year now of bass lessons with Matt I can say I consider him a friend as well as a tutor. Matt is a truly down-to-earth dude and experienced musician. My playing abilities would not be anywhere near where they are now without his guidance and he keeps me reminded that I have my own place in music, as does all music and musicians.

Matt is a great teacher, he has been teaching my son for 2 years, who started learning the bass from age 9. Matt has shown endless patience and encouragement and made lessons fun. My son has made great progress and most importantly, he enjoys his lessons. I would definitely recommended Matt as a teacher.

I opted to take lessons with Matt because from the start, he took the time to explain his approach and came across as thoughtful and patient. Not only Matt is friendly and passionate but he also tailors lessons to your progress and ensures that you have enough to practice on between sessions.
I find the lessons fun whilst also gaining technical knowledge, and based on the progress that I have made in only 4 months, I could not recommend Matt enough.
Lastly, with Matt, you also get this "premium service": he will reply to any silly questions you may have in between sessions!

Matt is encouraging and goes at your pace in terms of progress and learning. He is patient but pushes you when he feels you need it in order to move you on and make you realise you can do improve.
Lessons are relaxed and fun and he is always on hand (within reason) for guidance and support if you need it.
