Had Chris set up my brand new Hofner Ignition bass. Replaced the strings with flat-wounds, replaced the dodgy plastic nut with bone, and got rid of the pesky fret buzz. Plays like a dream. Very reasonably priced too. Highly recommended.

Had a second-hand Squier CV JM that needed some real setting up where one part of the bridge was especially hammered right down to the body. Chris was quick to identify any other problems and deliver top quality passion. I don't exaggerate when I say it plays like a million bucks now, I highly recommend him for guitar set-ups, repairs, custom makes, you name it. Pictures shown below are the parts replaced. Staytrem bridge, fender chrome locking tuners, and a new tusk nut which had to be cut thicker for the slot.

I have a Squire Classic Vibe strat that I recently took to Chris. I actually collected it today. Chris carried out a fret dress and full set up. The guitar feels so much more comfortable to play, very happy with the work carried out. I also had a few questions for Chris, he offered some great advice. I will definitely be using Chris again for any future work

This is the second guitar I've taken to Chris for a setup and replacement nut and, yet again, he's done a fantastic job.
The guitar is now massively improved and a joy to play, thanks to Chris's work.
I'd recommend Mcintyre Guitars to anyone looking to have their guitars worked on.

Chris did an amazing job redressing the frets and sorting out the bridge alignment on my Heritage 535 semi-hollow electric guitar. It is playing beautifully now. Can't believe what a difference it has made!
d. m.
I broke the nut on my Suzuki acoustic and got Chris to replace it and do a fret dress (he also fitted a strap button for me). It has never played so well in the 40+ years I have owned it, nothing to do with my ability and all to do with the great work that was done on it. I have fallen in love with this guitar again and have had no hesitation in sending my even older Hofner archtop for some care and attention.

Absolutely fantastic service from Chris - sorted my issue with my Classical guitar, and lowered the action - plays lovely now. Chris is very friendly, knowledgable and did a quick turnaround on the work. I’d highly recommend his services for any guitar work you need. Top class service - thanks.

Chris fixed the pickup in my girlfriend's guitar and changed the strings in no time. He also had a friendly chat with me while he did it! A good guy who knows his guitars. Will be using again.

Chris has done a brilliant job on my Taylor gs mini bringing it back from a wildly out of tune guitar to now a pleasure to play. The service he provides is first class and I thoroughly recommend him to sort out your guitar issues.

Chris repaired a crack I had put in the side of my Martin guitar. It was a true "Repair Shop" moment when I picked it
up. The repair was completely invisible. I wouldn't go anywhere else for guitar work.

Hadn't played my telecaster in ages as it was in need of some TLC. Chris did a fantastic job: gave it a fret dress, new compensated saddles, sorted the electrics and a set up - it's sounding and playing great. Fantastic value and service. Totally recommended.Cheers Chris!

A couple of years ago I ordered a D’Angelico acoustic guitar from the US. When the guitar arrived, I was disappointed to find the action was too high and the intonation was way out, rendering the guitar almost impossible to play.
I left the guitar with Chris to fix and asked him to replace the Piezo pick-up with something that would give the guitar a more ‘jazzier’ characteristic sound.
Chris completely transformed both the playability and sound of the guitar – the action was low and the intonation perfect. I couldn’t believe how good the DeArmond pickup looked and sounded – which was perfectly fitted. Chris takes great pride in his work, he’s a real craftsman, an excellent guitar luthier.
More recently I bought a Gibson ES 275 archtop guitar. As soon as I took it out the box and started playing, I could tell there was something wrong with the guitar, but I couldn’t quite figure out what it was so I took the guitar to Chris.
After a couple of seconds, he identified straight away that some of the frets were uneven and the neck needed adjusting.
I collected the guitar on Friday and haven’t been able to put it down since – thanks Chris for doing such a great job, I really appreciate it!

Just had a fret dress and the action lowered on my Martin. Playing beautifully now, feels like when I got the guitar over 12 years ago. Chris is a master of guitar repairs. The 3rd guitar I've had in, always a pleasure. Thanks
J. W.
Chris has just re fretted my 1971 telecaster which was a tricky job as the neck was very rounded, he has done an excellent job and kept the vintage look of the neck despite all the sanding and refinishing needed. Very happy with his work.
P. C.
Chris is a friendly and super knowledgeable guy. I've no doubt that my project is 100% in the right hands. Would completely recommend Mcintyre Guitars.
... Quick update after first review. Collected my newly built tele today. Been playing it for the last couple of hours and it's AMAZING! Well chuffed. The man knows his stuff. Cheers Chris

Chris has been taking care of guitars for myself and my students for years. I never hesitate to recommend him to new guitarists to get their guitars set up really well and give them the best chance of enjoying their playing. He has performed alchemy on guitar accidents that I feared were terminal on instruments of mine and is very committed to doing an excellent job at a very high level of expertise/experience. He is imaginative about how to solve problems with maintenance/sound and I've always had great results. He is also really nice to deal with.
R. Z.
Chris always does amazing work, always worth using Chris for all of your luthier work. Just got my 97 Les Paul standard back after new bone nut and fret dress. playing like butter now, best few quid spent on a guitar ever. delighted and will for certain use McIntyre Guitars time and again. would recommend to everyone. cheers, Neil

Chris took in a vintage bass I had bought which someone had badly fitted a non standard bridge to.
The work he did included templating and recessing the bridge together with some modifications to the metalwork of the bridge itself. He also remounted the bridge pickup which had been moved in the original botched job.
The bass now plays perfectly and has been adjusted to a very high standard.
Attention to detail was excellent and the work completed within a quick timescale.
Would highly recommend and I will certainly be taking some more of my instruments which need a bit of work done to him.
His own custom built instruments are very nice too.

I had my Yamaha acoustic setup & serviced recently including a fair amount of bridge/saddle work. Chris did a great job and the guitar is like a new instrument, only better, as I already know it so well! My Yammy is not a fancy or expensive instrument in comparison to some of those listed here but Chris treated it just the same, and gave it the care and attention it needed to keep me playing and enjoying it. Very pleased with the work and the end result.
C. E.
I had my yellowing and badly chipped Fender Jaguar resprayed and it looks as good as new but plays better than ever thanks to Chris's setup. He also replaced the pots and controllers and set up my Fender Jazz Bass. Both guitars are transformed, I'm very pleased with Chris's work, thank you!
K. B.
Got a repair done of a damaged headstock; superb quality of repair . Chris also dressed the frets and set it up as well. It's like a new guitar and I'm totally delighted with it!
High quality of work at a good price, and an all round excellent service.
A. W.
Chris has just done a wonderful rewire/repair of my late eighties active bass. He had to rewire the bass due to a very faulty repair by another luthier!
I cannot thank Chris enough, for getting my bass up and playing, I was not sure whether it could be fixed! Quite possibly the speediest and comprehensively detailed fix I have ever known.True professional. BRILLIANT WORK!!
Highly highly recccomended..
Many Thanks again.

Chris was incredibly helpful and quick at setting up my acoustic guitar. He also advised me and took out a pick up on another guitar, for free, refusing to take a bit more money for his time. 100% happy. Thanks Chris.
Returning again with another guitar this month,Chris was equally helpful, he adjusted the action and dressed the frets. When I went back to him two weeks later and I needed a further adjustment, Chris had no problem in doing that and didn't charge me anything more for his time. Great service again. Thanks again.
C. T.
Really impressed! The guitar sounds so much better and is easier to play after it's service. Chris knows his stuff and is really helpful. He gave us loads of advice and is obviously passionate about guitars. Amazing value for money, quick turnaround and he gave us a set of strings! Don't hesitate to call. Mcintyre Guitars are great!
C. A.
I’d have no hesitation recommending Chris to anyone. I bought myself a Martin HD-28 a few years ago but never bonded with it. Sounded beautiful but didn’t suit my ‘light’ play style as the action was too high above the 5th fret. I’d tried all the usual adjustments, tweaking the neck, different strings, etc., but it was clear it needed more than that. I got a personal recommendation to Chris from a guitarist friend whose judgment I trust and I’m really glad I listened to him. It plays like the guitar I always wanted it to be now - can’t put it down. In fact, Chris has set it up so well I’ll need to get him to do all my other guitars too!
S.
I took my guitar to Chris a few weeks ago for a set up and the work he did was fantastic. Sorted a good few issues with my guitar and gave it back better than new- it looks, plays and sounds outstanding. Chris is friendly, professional and precise in his work. Highly recommend his services to anyone.

Chris has done a great job in setting up 3 acoustic guitars, a Strat and a Les Paul studio for me. I run a recording studio, my instruments are all top quality and I am very picky about how they are set up. No offence, but very much all shop-based guitar techs in Edinburgh have really disappointed me in the past to one extent or the other. I am so happy to have found Chris, because now I have someone I can trust will help keeping my instruments sounding at their best. As a bonus, his prices are honest and he is always super nice to deal with! I highly recommend him :-)
J. S.
Chris did a fantastic job on my vintage J-45 which was in need of a new bridge. He replaced the original cracked plastic unit with an ebony one he made by hand. It's vastly improved the resonance and volume of my guitar, and I couldn't be happier. Chris is personable, knowledgeable and I'd say his rate was more than fair.
Cheers Chris!

Update Apr 2021: Just got my Taylor acoustic back from Chris. Great work. Neck angle adjusted, worn frets sorted and the whole lot re-levelled. Plays better now than it ever has. Thanks Chris, perfect job.
-
Great service and a great job. Took my strat in to get the frets levelled and a set up done. This guitar has always slightly frustrated me because it's never been quite right. That's all in the past now though. It's like a new guitar, and I love it. The turn-around time was really quick and I learned a few handy things from Chris when I was in there too. Thanks!

A couple of weeks back I was told by a professional that my 5 year old guitar was essentially beyond repair. I was devastated, as it was one of the nicest guitars I'd ever played, let alone owned, and I knew I'd have a hard time replacing it with something anywhere near as good. Before I started shopping around for a new one I thought I'd better get a second opinion, so I found Chris through Google and went to see him the following day. He told me that contrary to what I'd been told, the guitar was completely fixable and that he would do his best to have it done for me fast, as I had to go away in a few days time for a gig.
I was a bit confused, as it was the opposite of what the other professional had told me - but he seemed to know what he was doing and the price he quoted was very reasonable, so I left him with my guitar and expected to hear from him in a day or two. He actually got back to me that same night, letting me know he'd done the repair and the guitar just had to be restrung before I could collect it. He confirmed for me again that the guitar was actually in good shape and that the advice I was given was wrong - which I 100% believe, now I have my guitar back and it sounds better than it ever has!
As a side note, I ended up purchasing a new guitar around that time also, and Chris offered to remove the pickup from the old one and fit it into the new one for me, which was really good of him as he had already put a fair bit of time into getting the repair done for me quickly.
I'm not sure whether the other guitar tech just made a mistake or was misleading me, but I definitely won't be going to anyone else from now on. Chris's price was incredibly reasonable considering the time he put in and I really appreciated his efforts - I now have my beloved original guitar back, sounding amazing, plus a new one with a newly fitted pickup - he even got me a discount on the new one! I highly highly recommend him, he's amazing at what he does and he's also a lovely guy. Couldn't be happier!

I had two guitars set up here. One was a 12 string Alvarez and the other a Fender strat. I can’t believe the job that Chris has done. The guy can work miracles with a guitar. I highly recommend using him to set up your guitar. The best job I’ve ever seen done setting up a guitar. Great work Chris, Thanks
W. K.
Chris is incredible — very kind and extremely skilled. Plus, I like his sense of humour ;) A friend recommended his services and now I won't even think of going anywhere else. He sorted my guitar beautifully and offered advice on little things that improved my experience of playing. I rarely write reviews on the web, but this man deserves it big time. Chris, you rock, and I will be back (knocking the door properly next time ;)
M. D.
I wish I’d gone to Chris sooner!
Chris is very much a perfectionist and saying that he knows his stuff is an understatement. I’m so pleased with the work he did on my prized 7 string bass. Well worth the trip over from Glasgow. I have no hesitation in recommending Chris to anyone for any work your instrument needs.
G. L.
This is the first time I've had any work done on my Taylor and Chris has made it sing ! He takes a genuine interest in the guitar and its history in order to recommend the most appropriate work. Chris completed the job quickly, efficently and to a high standard. I would highly recommend Chris to any guitarist looking to get the best out of their guitar.
P.
Chris did an electrical repair on my Takamine electric/acoustic while I waited a few weeks ago which was unexpected and appreciated. I took the guitar back this week for some further work - frets and setup - and it has made a huge difference to the guitar. Chris builds guitars from scratch and understands them from top to bottom and his rates are good too. I will definitely contact Chris again when I need further guitar work done and I recommend him 100% to other guitarists.
A. H.
This guy is astonishingly good. He re-set the neck of my grandad's 1920s Radiotone acoustic and did an amazing repair job on the frets and machine head. He had it done in a few weeks and it plays like a dream! Brilliant!
H. K.
Chris fitted a fretless neck on my late 70's Fender Jazz Bass and did a superb job. It plays , feels and looks great; and is set up beautifully. Very helpful friendly service too, and he really takes in an interest in your needs, plus is on hand if you have any questions or ideas on the project. As if all that isn't enough his pricing is very reasonable too, so I'd recommend anyone to get work done on their guitars there.

It's always a joy to come across someone who is excellent at what they do and who cares about the quality of their work Chris has worked on a few of my guitars and the standard of his work is excellent. He's a rare find. If your guitar needs come care then take it to Chris - you won't regret it.
J. M.
I took my poorly set up guitar in and Chris had it sorted in no time. Chris could not have been more friendly or helpful and offered great advice on looking after the guitar. It'a real pleasure to meet someone who is so good at what they do. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
F. J.
Chris did some beautiful work on my Vintage 1963 Strat. It was in for a re-fret and set up and now plays really beautifully. I couldn’t be happier with the work. Definitely thinking about getting him to build me one of his entirely hand crafted guitars in the future!!!
G. M.
Chris builds stunning guitars and basses at the highest level, so I was keen to take my guitar to him when some setup issues cropped up. The work is brilliant and I’m now very happy with a guitar that was previously driving me up the wall due to various issues. He’s very busy sometimes, but that’s for a good reason; He really knows his stuff! Highly recommended.
D. L.
I first took one of my basses in about 18 months ago, and was so impressed by Chris' work that I got him to fix up a couple of others.
I've just been back for some additional work and can't praise his service high enough. Chris has the skill and experience to do what you need, even when you don't really know what you need! He fitted active electrics to one of my basses and despite changing it from a great guitar into an awesome one, most folks wouldn't see any difference. A nasty ding (on an otherwise unmarked shiny black finish) is now totally invisible, and my fretless now sings up and down the whole fretboard, instead of just at the top end.
Thanks Chris!

I’ve been collecting high end and vintage guitars for years and was always disappointed by the quality of my previous guitar tech/luthiers. I always felt that their skill level and attention to detail wasn’t quite there. I can’t speak highly enough of Chris and have recommended his services to many, he really is the real deal. From his own custom builds to setups or repairs, he is literally the best in the business. The fact that he has a year’s worth of work sitting in his premises says a lot. Speak to him nicely and he might just squeeze you in 👍🏼

I recently had Chris Mcintyre set up my acoustic, which is the third guitar he has done for me. I'm happy to do the 90 mile round trip as the friendly and skilful service Chris provides ensures that I get my guitars playing the way they should. Chris has years of experience building and repairing instruments and that gives me the confidence in his ability to get the most out of the guitar. The costs are very reasonable and my acoustic now plays exceptionally well. Chris is very approachable and he puts you at ease. I would highly recommend Mcintyre guitars if you are in need of the services they can offer.
J. E.
Chris did an excellent job with my instrument in a timely and professional manner. I couldn't recommend his work more. He discussed the modifications I wanted to make to my guitar with me and gave me his professional opinion on the best solutions. He also set up my guitar wonderfully, it plays better than ever. Considering the amount of work I wanted done to my instrument, the level of skill and professionalism the work was carried out with and the time it took to complete the work the price he charged me was beyond reasonable. Not to mention he's also a sound chap. Again, I couldn't recommend his work any more.
Cheers Chris!

Just had Chris do a fret dress and full set up on my Epiphone Les Paul. What a difference, it's like a different guitar, would highly recommend, great job. Chris also gave me some advice on string gauges which was really appreciated.
D. S.
I live in London. I have 20 odd guitars. Ive used a good few gtr repairers/luthers over the years in-between a busy music schedule. Chris Mcintyre will do anything that needs doing to your guitar for the best price hands down. The best quality I can get! And it still works out cheaper for me to send them up to Scotland and back for a job would you believe..
J. C.
I put my guitar in for a setup with Chris; it plays absolutely fantastic now!
He has a great attention to detail and is very thorough. Very quick turnaround considering I just turned up rather than called ahead. Cheers.
R. L.
I've been going to Chris for many years, from his time in London and with his base now being in Edinburgh it's even handier.
I've had Chris construct a custom built guitar for me and use him for all my guitars fixes and tweaks. He is one of the best I've ever come across and his helpful, honest and frankly best value for money service is second to none.
I've recommended Chris's services to many friends and all of them are delighted with the quality of his work.
i. b.
Guitar damaged and worn. Chris fixed it and set it up for me, charged the amount he quoted and completed the work on the date he said he would. By my reckoning that makes him a business worth recommending and a person of integrity. Did I mention that the guitar is better than ever. Delighted.
M. M.
I can wholeheartedly recommend Chris as first choice when it comes to getting your guitar fixed. His attention to detail and his knowledge and expertise are second to none.
I recently had an urgent need for a setup on my acoustic. Despite having a huge number of clients already booked in he was gracious enough to find the time to attend to my instrument, and it left his shop playing and sounding better than it had ever done before.
So all in all it is a no-brainer when it comes to choosing a luthier in Scotland ... Chris McIntyre is the man to go to ...period.
J. H.
Chris is someone who’s knowledge of lutherie, his work ethic and attention to detail are clearly demonstrated in the work he produces, whether it be his bespoke custom guitars or as in my case, maintenance work on a guitar, comprising of fret stoning and crowning.
Not only was the work carried out, done to the highest standard , but he also took it upon himself to tidy up the edges of the fret board where someone else had previously done some work and left it a bit scrappy.
Chris is a player and someone who understands the different demands of musicians and is willing to listen and discuss options so he can provide his clients with the best service possible.
A most decent bloke and highly recommended.
p. h.
Handed in my Gibson ES 335 studio had a selector switch problem. Chris rewired the switch now perfect and returned promptly plus a reasonable price. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
A. R.
McIntyre Guitars have carried out three repairs for me in the last months. The most challenging a neck reset in a late 50’s Gretsch. Chris has done an outstanding job bringing a damaged old classic back to life. The standard of finish is first class. He’s a busy man, and the reason for that is his work is so bloody good.
S. P.
Extremely Happy with the service I got at McIntyre Guitars! Chris was very friendly and took the time to listen to what I wanted for my set up and got it bang on the money in next to no time at all (something other companies have failed to do for me despite me trying to explain my issue).
This gent is obviously a master of his craft and can easily be seen in the work he has done (guitar building and repair/maintenance) I was made very welcome at the work shop and well definitely use his service again.
Thanks again Chris
L. M.
Excellent experience dealing with Chris. Had a neck problem with a vintage Strat - took it into a Well known Edinburgh shop who told me it was back bowed, the frets needed pulled, complete refret and lacquer of the neck. Quoted £350ish. Chris managed to sort it so it now plays beautifully with just a fret stone. I’m delighted. Nice dude too!
L. A.
I took two guitars for minor work (pickup replacement), ahead of some intensive recording sessions.
The work was done extremely promptly (thanks Chris, very appreciated!) and as expected, to a high standard. Not only that, after his set up, the guitars came back playing and sounding like much better guitars than they are. To top it all up, a visit to his workshop to collect the guitars turned into a fantastic experience: master craftsman at work + interesting conversation = great time!
Thanks Chris, I shall certainly return for more of your services.
Luis
(That wall is still a mystery).

In my 40+ years in the music profession, I've had a lot of guitars worked on by a lot of different instrument repairers. Chris is the best, and it's not close. He's knowledgeable, highly skilled, doesn't charge the earth, and is a friendly person to deal with. If you're hunting around for someone to fix up a guitar for you - stop looking. You've just found the guy you need.
S. J. W.
Was recommended to Chris by a friend to get some needed maintenance for my bass. A good setup and was needed and I had a few unlevelled frets higher up the neck.
He was a very friendly guy and offered great value for the work he did. Now my Jazz bass plays great. Would highly recommend.
G. K.
Chris performed a set-up of my newly acquired Fender Jazz Bass which was pre-owned and modded. As I had traveled some distance to to get the job done he carried out the set-up while I waited thus saving me a another round trip. The set-up was perfect and I feel like I walked away with a new guitar. Great service & highly recommended.
D. L.
Set my bass up beautifully. I once bought a bass in London which was set-up just as well. It turns out it was Chris that did it when he was based down there. Delighted that he's in Edinburgh!
S. L.
I brought in an old acoustic guitar that I've been messing around with on and off for years. The difference after Chris' set-up is like night and day! I'd recommend him to anyone.
P. C.
Chris McIntyre had my guitar playing like a dream after I received a total botched job on a string replacement by another company.
He came recommended by a life long musician friend and clearly knows and is passionate about his instruments. Very skilled technical, very personable and very honest.
Highly recommend 👍

3 and a half years ago, I had my bass defretted. A good job was made of it, but the tech who did it said that the frets couldn't be put back in. Fast forward to the present, and after me realizing that fretless doesn't suit my playing style, I decided to see if anything could be done about it. I took the bass in for Chris to have a look, and not only did he say that the frets could be put back in, but that the cost for doing so would be nowhere near as much as I thought. The job he did was brilliant, and I'll be recommending him to any bassists or guitarists that need their instrument fixed. On top of that, you can just tell that he has a passion for what he does, with an insane knowledge of the job as well.

I was having an issue with my pride and joy - after five years of constant gigging, I experienced a wiring issue and the only sound coming out of my Telecaster was a horrible hum.
Took it into Chris and he did an amazing job. Great value for money.
M. M.
Chris was really friendly and down to earth, we had a nice chat! He offered me a good price, and got it done really quickly :) He did a great job especially with the cleaning and polishing, it looked brand new! Everyone, go to Chris with your guitar troubles ;)
N. T.
Chris has now breathed life into two vintage Guild guitars for me and I have been blown away both times! The work he's done has been superb, especially on my bass which needed a paint crack masked on the neck. They both came back with amazing playability and fully serviced. Look no further if you love your guitar people. Thanx Chris
J. K.
Chris' workmanship is absolutely spot-on! I have asked Chris to replace a stock nut on my Gibson LP Traditional with a bone nut, and he's done the impossible. Firstly and most importantly, the guitar stays in tune like a charm (even after some prolonged heavy bending). To make it even better, you cannot even see that the nut was replaced! I cannot recommend Chris enough. I know he's my go-to guy if something ever goes wrong!
A. S.
I asked Chris to install a pickup in my beloved 70's Guild acoustic. He turned out to be a great guy, and the work was done quickly at an affordable price. I'm really pleased to have found him after some negative experiences with other local guitar techs. McIntyre Guitars will be my first port of call for any issues from now on.
P. S.
My wife took my Takamine acoustic in for what l thought was needed, refret and repair to damage at to rear of headstock caused by previous wife. Chris called me to say just needed fret dress and damage could be repaired. Guitar was picked up yesterday and to say I'm delighted would be an understatement. Plays like a dream and headstock looks brand new. Chris is great to deal with, guitar is perfect and I'm very happy. Thanks.
P. L.
I had taken my guitar to a different repair shop, and the guitar was sounding naff. I took it to Chris and he has saved it! He did a professional set-up, fret dress, new bone saddle from blank, and fitted a new stereo socket. The guitar is sounding better than ever. I couldn't be happier. Thanks, Chris!
D. L.
Fret dress, nut & bridge adjustment plus setup carried out on my J200. Amazing work and a very reasonable price. Quick turnaround too given the amount of work Chris has on. Many thanks for a great job.
B. A.
Chris at Mcintyre Guitars is a first rate professional that knows exactly what he's doing, and his quality of work is unchallenged.
I've been playing a long time and really needed a tech who understood what I wanted. Chris's knowledge is second to none and can accommodate any (realistic!) request. After my first experience I now go back with all my guitars for any work that needs done, no questions asked.
As long as Mcintyre Guitars exists I am a permanent customer.
T. K.
I walked into Chris' workshop totally unannounced and explained that I messed up the wiring in my telecaster by trying to get rid of the annoying hum. Despite having a busy schedule, he instantly took my guitar and repaired it within 30 minutes. On top of that he gave me some maintenance advice and we had a little chat afterwards. When I got home I realised he even fixed the missing pickup selector knob!
Totally recommended. Will definitely visit again. Thanks Chris!
A. B.
Everyone needs a 'guy' if they play an instrument. After my first fix (6 string bass refret) Chris is now my guy. Not only did he do a perfect job, he resolved a load of minor issues, some that I didn't even know about, with no extra charge and set the bass up to perfection. Now, I cannot stop playing this bass - it's like a whole new instrument. Chris is a master of what he does, be it guitar or bass, and also does custom builds. He's also a very nice chap indeed and has talent to match his passion for what he does. Need a guy? Chris is your guy. Go see Chris. Chris the guy. Your guy. Your search ends here.
D. M.
I've used Chris several times over the last few years, for a range of jobs on my basses, from basic setups to pickup and preamp installation to neck reprofiling. His work is always of an excellent standard, he's quick and his prices are very reasonable. He's a top bloke too. Highly recommended.
d. m.
Chris is a master technician with a genuine approach and a clear fondness for his craft. I thought my '89 Strat needed re-fretting and a thorough electrical overhaul, however, he advised that fret stoning would be more than adequate, he identified and replaced the faulty components and carried out some subtle maintenance tweaks. Thus, my 25 year old guitar plays and sounds absolutely brand new at less than a third of the cost I originally anticipated. Quick, honest and expert.

Best luthier in Scotland without a doubt. I took two 70s strats to Chris for re-fret, neck scallop, pickup change and brass nut. One guitar had been poorly worked on before by a well known outfit in Glasgow. Chris' standard of work is absolutely top class. Whatever are your expectations Chris will do the job to the highest level. Prices are very fair as well.

I have a 1979 Strat that was my go to guitar but I had almost stopped playing as the frets were so low. I'd taken a bit of a fancy to large frets so I got Chris to put Dunlop 6100 fretwire on and also flatten the vintage radius out a bit. It now plays superbly - I can play with a light touch instead of wringing the neck. In addition, it also sounds great after Chris changed the volume pot to a log pot so it can go gradually from a whisper to roar instead of the on/off behaviour of the old volume pot. I was so pleased with the work on my Strat that I took my 2014 Les Paul classic in for a fret stoning - the frets weren't worn but I didn't like the flat/square fret profile that came from the factory set up. Again, the job Chris did was excellent and the guitar is much more playable now.
P. M.
Chris did a great job on a 1958 Hofner President archtop that was in a very sorry state. The guitar now looks and sounds great. I had put off getting the guitar sorted out for years, because I thought it would cost an arm and a leg. Not so. Chris' bill was very reasonable. So, a great job at a very good price too. Thanks Chris.
D. T.
It was a bit daunting to be handing over a much loved and slightly damaged/worn guitar to be fixed but I am absolutely delighted in the results. Work was completed very quickly and the price very reasonable. 100% recommended!
J. M.
Outstanding quality of work, and value for money. Work on two guitars was carried out within hours, with both made available for collection the same day. Very happy with the results! Thanks!!
M. R.
Thoroughly recommended. Went to see Chris with an unusual request for a modification to an electric upright basses. Not only did he suggest a good solution, he did the job there and then, charged me a very reasonable price, and showed me some of the guitars he was working on. A very enjoyable experience, and a good job well done.
B. P.
I gave Chris my 15 year old Taylor Acoustic - the action was beginning to get high and the frets were worn. I left it with Chris and collected it yesterday. When I got it home it was like a new guitar - the action was perfect and the frets dressed really well, with a new set of Elixirs to round it all off. I don't write reviews by the way, but this was such a bang up job, I couldn't let it go without a word of thanks.

Chris Mcintyre just did a fret level and set up on my guitar. Had it for years and it's never played better. Should have done it years ago. He listened to what I wanted and and totally delivered. It cost a lot less than I thought for someone with his experience and if you check out the list of clients on his website you'll see what I mean. There's really no one else in this area with his qualifications and experience as a luthier.
M. C.
After frustrating experiences with two other luthiers in Scotland, I decided to travel a bit farther afield to have some work done on an acoustic and a resonator.
I found Chris to be very friendly, good at communicating the job and generous with advice. Crucially, the results were first-rate. Well worth the money and the trip!
If you don’t already have a luthier you’re happy with, take the advice of someone who’s now spent more than they would wish on lacklustre luthier work: visit Chris.
R. M.
Chris installed new pickups and recommended a fret dress, which turned out to vastly improve the sound, as there were intonation issues I hadn't detected myself. This is a prompt, friendly and high quality service.
C. S.
Was referred to Chris as someone that might be able to “save” my ‘97 American Strat neck. A very badly stripped and hacked up truss rod nut and what to me looked like a badly splintered rosewood fretboard almost assigned this to the bin. Chris gained access to the nut by removing part of the fretboard and pieced a new section back in (I still can’t see the join) after repairing, before doing a full refretting job. You have to pay for this level of skill and workmanship however the final bill was WELL short of a replacement American neck. I’m quite a handy tech guy but Chris’ skills are on another level altogether. Nothing in the pipeline just now but I know I’ll be using Chris’ services again!
M. S.
I was looking for an acoustic guitar set up. Despite being busy, Chris explained what needed done, fitted me in and did a top notch job. This was my first time at McIntyre Guitars. Can't think why I would go anywhere else. Big thanks.
B. C.
Top notch experience with Chris. Gave him a couple of fiddly wee jobs, pickup change n set up on a schecter corsair with all the gubbins having to come out through the f holes, and a pickup change (including cover removal) trem block and set up on ibanez rg prestige. Both guitars are now sounding and playing better than they ever have. Really nice guy to deal with and the quality of the work is superb. I'll definitely be using Chris for any other work I need from now on.
G. M.
Can't recommend Chris highly enough, ALL the work he has carried out for me has been top notch and i would not go anywhere else now !
Third guitar I have given him and all three have come back like new guitars both cosmetically and playability ...
I brought a partscaster Telecaster in recently that cost me very little...A new tone pot, graphtec nut,set up,fret stone and rewired pickup later and it's better than many Fenders i have played...but Chris being Chris also added gold screws to the scratch plate to match the other gold hardware and THATS what makes the difference between Chris and all the others....that attention to detail goes a long way !!
Thanks again Chris !
(Give him a visit Guitarists)

McIntyre Guitars are my "go to" guitar maintenance, setup and repair outfit in Scotland. I first encountered Chris McIntyre when he was based in London, England.
The attention to detail and quality of his work is so good that myself and my guitarist friends used to fly or drive to London with our instruments to have them tweaked by him.
Now that he's based in Edinburgh, it's great knowing that I can have my guitars and basses playing better than ever once he's worked his magic.
Friends to whom I've recommended Chris have all been delighted by the work Chris has done.
T. M. R.
I handed my acoustic guitar 'Blossom' in for repair for the first time, I had bought her 2nd hand and had played her through hundreds of open mic nights and gigs, she had been battered and bruised and I noticed there was a split at the side, and the soundboard had started to peel away from the guitar, causing me all sorts of problems. The frets were also damaged through heavy use over time! She was in desperate need of some TLC!
When I got her back, I couldn't believe the difference! She looked brand new and felt like a dream to play, she has never felt so good!
I was playing a festival the day after I got it back so was able to try it out properly at a gig! She sounded great and the gig was a success!
Chris had been recommended to me through a fellow guitarist, and I wouldn't go to anyone else now! He is not just your average guitar tech, he is a master craftsman of his trade.
Highly recommended!
G. A.
Chris did a fantastic job on my old Martin 000-15s. Fret dress, new bone nut and saddle and a polish up on the top. Plays and looks much better. Highly recommended.
S. W.
Chris' attention to detail is incredibly high, and the quality of his work is just amazing. I thought I needed some new frets on an 80s Fender Jaguar, but he advised to just stone them and when I got the guitar back it played better than it has done at any time in the last 30 years!
I took in a korean Epiphone 335 which I thought needed a new nut, but Chris was able to change the setup and recut the existing nut to completely solve the problem. He also replaced a dodgy fret, filled a chip in the neck, and identified and fixed the source of some strange buzzing on the bridge. As with the Jag, the 335 plays amazingly and is far better than before. Chris just gets every little detail right.
H. M.
As a beginner with no sense, I rushed out and bought a Taylor acoustic guitar. Played well in the shop, but when I got it home, I was finding it hard work. Took it to Chris on a recommendation from my teacher and its now set up to suit my level of ability. Saved the day!
K. C.
Had a setup done on a Mexican build Telecaster and a Hendrix signature model Strat. The Strat also needed a fret dressing (thanks for that quality control, Fender!).
Both guitars now playing perfectly. Highly recommended.
L. K.
Absolutely over the moon with the set-up Chris has done on my five-string Fender Jazz. I struggled through our last gig but it's playing like a dream now that he's worked his magic. Can't recommend Chris highly enough!
E. J.
Chris is an absolute legend. He knows guitars, he clearly *loves* guitars, and he's a pleasure to work with.
I was in a bind with a broken preamp - he went above and beyond to fix it. I ended up paying he more than he asked for, because he bloody well deserved it!
Absolutely top class craftsman!
P. W.
I've been taking all my basses to Chris for the last 3 years or so, maybe longer. Long enough that I got around to asking him to help me put together a custom Precision Bass he ended up making for me (with a super sweet neck), as well as working on all my other instruments. He covers everything I have ever needed - wiring, set-up, mods, general advice, and we have definitely lost a few hours to chatting about bass and music. I can heartily recommend him as an expert luthier and general 'go-to' guy. I'm so glad that he decided to set up shop for himself in Edinburgh after leaving the Gallery/Sei in London!
f. k.
I couldn't recommend Chris highly enough. Chris took a very badly made Squier strat that i own and made an absolute beast out of it. He does a great job, on time and gives very reasonable prices. I couldn't thank him enough for the great work he's done on my guitar, i guess this is one way of showing my gratitude...
J. F.
Just got my Gibson Les Paul Studio set up by Chris. It now feels and sounds amazing, and he turned the job around very quickly indeed. He's a real pleasure to do business with and I'd recommend him to anyone with a guitar that needs anything at all done to it.
R. B.
Chris is a great guy he recommends the best for your guitar. He has got loads of experience into this and his services are quick and reasonably priced. Just contact him he is very friendly and welcoming.
N. G.
I have recently been working on my slap bass technique and thought it would be worth getting a set-up. After getting a set-up from Chris my slapping sound has improved immensely. Within a day or two the bass was ready to be picked up.
L. L. B.
Best luthier, guitar builder and tech around. If you are local to Edinburgh city centre then you’re in luck! I can’t recommend Chris highly enough. Honest advice and the highest quality workmanship, he’s the only choice if you value your stringed instrument. Trust me, you won’t regret it...
M. E.
Chris has just completed a refret on my beloved early 70s Les Paul Goldtop. It's my go to gigging guitar and although it has been in need of some TLC for some time now, I'd been putting off having the work done as I've been worried that it may come back missing some of its character that I love so much. Chris came highly recommended and so I took the plunge......what a great decision that was. I picked her up yesterday and the quality of work looked stellar and she played beautifully. I spent this morning playing hard through a selection of my amps - what an incredible improvement - I'm just blown away to be honest. I can't recommend Chris highly enough and I'll certainly be sending more work his way.
Thanks again Chris - I'm so happy at the moment :-)

Chris did a fantastic job rebonding 5 neck inlays and a setup on my 2 year old Les Paul, it plays and feels absolutely wonderful now, I would highly recommend Mcintyre Guitars, Thanks Chris...
S. R.
Chris has looked at a few guitars for me now for fretwork and setup from Strats to SG's, they come back playing amazing every time! Highly recommend!
S. A. (. W.
Came to Chris with a minor ground problem on a Strat copy. He walked me through it, offered up some advice, gave me some knick knack parts to help me get started on my own guitar maintenance. Total pro with no BS attached. Will always go back to him for guitar maintenance and fixes. Will never think twice about going to him over any chain store.
R. S.
I recently had some serious mods done to my musicman stingray as well as a hefty amount of tweaking to my acg bass via Chris' stunning skills. I was literally gob smacked at how well everything turned out and I really don't know what I would have done without his talents (seriously, you'd literally have to look long and hard outside of the UK to find electric guitar craftsmanship of this level and even then, there's no guarantee it would be on a par with Chris' work!).
I've been a professional bassist for 15 years and there isn't a single luthier I've come across in the UK with this amount of care, attention to detail and passion for the trade (No word of a lie, I'd literally never encountered a single luthier who'd take my observations seriously until I discovered McIntyre Guitars). You never feel rushed or uncomfortable when you visit Chris in his workshop and the pride he takes in his work is inspiring. He will go beyond the call of duty to get the job done, not matter how tricky it may seem and his rates are super fair and honest.
To summarise: Deal with this great guy in complete confidence, he's untouchable in this country.
Cheers,
Ross - Glasgow, Scotland

Absolutely superb job setting up my thinline Telecaster, can't believe it's the same guitar. Super quick turnaround, expert advice and friendly to boot. Can't recommend Mcintyre Guitars highly enough.
C. R.
Excellent job. Helped me to iron out the bugs of my own doing. Extremely knowledgeable of everything related to stringed instruments. Professional quality service. Great price for the work done.

Only discovered Chris Mcintyre Guitars a few months ago which was annoying for me as his Workshop is only 5 mins from my house !
Anyway I recently got my hands on a Gretsch G5124 but it needed work done so i gave Chris a visit...
First thing you notice is his passion for his craft.
Secondly, he tells you how it is and what needs to be done to achieve the end result.
Thirdly, he is a gem of a guy who cares about what he does and makes you feel at ease to ask questions on what it is you want the end result to be for your guitar.
I collected my Gretsch today and through Chris' work, my Guitar is a dream to play, simply stunning and reasonably priced into the bargain !!
So...Thanks Chris,once again...
And to anyone reading this...give the "High St" companies a miss and give Chris at Mcintyres Guitars a visit .

Chris Mcintyre has a habit of turning a mediocre instrument into a thing of musical beauty. He is simply a master craftsman and a really good guy to boot.
He managed somehow to bring life back into a well abused Fender Strat and worked wonders on my favorite Trevor Wilkinson Fret King Strat which inherently had harmonic issues.
Happily now I possess two instrument of remarkable beauty that sing to my every tune, play to my every whim, and bring a smile to my face every time I pick them up.
I now find playing a joyous and moving experience, knowing that everything about my guitars is as good as it can be, balance and perfection in perfect harmony. I don't know how he does it, but he does it!!!
If you play a stringed instrument........... this really is THE guy to go to
Thank you Chris!
G. P.
I have a very smart and mad expensive ( IMO) moon custom dreadnought with cutaway which was/ is Jimmy Moons only one of a kind ( my idea). Anyway, after 15+ yrs it was in dire need of a major setup as the action had gotten very high, and the tone etc had gone south! Anyway, after his work on said guitar, it’s now not only playing better than ever, but sounding incredible with tone, sustain and character to die for ! Highly recommended.
T.
Chris is not only a master crafter, is also an artist and a creative.
Very good job with my guitar, thanks Chris!
Quick and prices are reasonable.
Strongly recommended!
C. G.
Chris sorted out a nice Strat I bought recently which had badly worn frets. I was thinking a refret would be needed, but Chris recommended fret stoning which has worked out very nicely. The frets are very well shaped now and the annoying fret buzz has gone away. Very pleased.
P. P.
I took my Martin into Chris to get a badly fitted pickup removed and a new one fitted. He did an excellent job at a great price. My guitar has got it's mojo back.
M. C.
Chris did an excellent job on my acoustic. Some touch-ups, fret dress and set-up. In high demand and very busy but turn around time brilliant!
O. R.
This guy is seriously top notch. Proper knowledge of the workings of any type of guitar, regardless of the brand. I had to visit just once in an emergency, and it was obvious from the start he had worked on thousands of different types of guitar before and managed to fix my electrics system very quickly having never even worked on my particular brand of guitar before. Very impressive - cannot record McIntyre Guitars enough.
C. M.
Definitely gives it to you straight lol But always get your guitar back with a new lease of life with incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail , everyone i know who owns a guitar says go and see chris and always glad i listened to them , Thanks Chris hopefully see you again much sooner this time, peace
B. C.
I've developed a strong preference for big fret-wire and have had Les Paul Custom Axcess refretted with 6100s and a Suhr Custom Classic refretted with 6000s by Chris. He did an excellent, professional job on both, significantly imporoving the feel and playability of both guitars. Recommended.
D. O.
Chris McIntyre is a brilliant luthier. Couldn't recommend him higher!
He fixed my guitar up with a set up, two new pickups, and a mod or two for a very reasonable price.
N. M.
Great and quick service. Chris is very knowledgable and crafty. The sound of my guitar has improved dramatically after passing through Chris' hands!
C. F.
So glad I went to Chris on a mate's recommendation - 12 yr old P-Bass that had never been set up....now plays like a completely different instrument! A couple of minor dings in the body and neck repaired perfectly too - and all at a very fair price - couldn't recommend Chris McIntyre enough! :)
m.
Chris took an old 12 string Yamaha that had lain unloved for years, worked his magic, and I now have a guitar that's as good as new. Not only is he an expert in all things guitar, he's a nice guy too. Don't go anywhere else.
w.
Had Chris redo the Rickenbacker's 330 lacquered fret board and set up at same time, he done an absolute first class job and it just sounds completely different, what a transformation. A true craftsman at work, highly recommended if you want it done right.
P. B.
Chris did a fantastic job on my guitar, refretting, pickup replacement, bridge replacement, neck repair and overall setup.
It now plays like a dream.
Highly recommended.
J. M.
Fantastic service! Chris got my new guitar set up and sounding great really quickly as he knew I needed it back. Quality work and friendly service - thanks Chris :)
P. M. (.
Attention to detail and willing to help sort anything he can on your guitar/bass! It's the only place I take my guitars now. Chris is also a luthier and builds some lovely instruments for some top players.
R.
First time visiting Chris to drop off a G&L for some fretwork and setup. Very approachable and his reputation is clearly well deserved as the results are faultless. Wouldn't recommend anyone else.
K. M.
Absolutely the best service I’ve ever seen for my bass. Chris is clearly very skilled, and knowledgeable. Will definitely never go to anyone else for guitar works.
D. H.
Superb craftsman , worthy of every 5 star review. If your guitar needs work of any sort Id say Chris is the man to entrust it to. Outstanding.
M.
Superb guitar setup, really well worth doing, done by a master craftsman. My acoustic guitar now almost plays as easily as my electric. Thank you!
J. W.
Chris has a reputation for great work and craftsmanship for a reason and I'd definitely recommend him to anyone looking for quick set-up through to more specialised, detailed work. No hassle, no inflated prices, just honest about what needs done and a rapid turn-around if requested.
I. T.
Fantastic Guitar Tech!!! Handed in my "bust up" Strat and got it back the very next day...completely rewired....new bridge...new machine heads (genuine Fender parts)...3 new pots...full set up...AWESOME!!! I can honestly say my guitar has never played better. I would fully recommend Mcintyre Guitars to anyone and everyone :)
C. T.
Chris did a very nice job on my Gibson Flying V. Fixed a laquer flaw on the neck that slipped passed QC. Also suggested a fret stone and the guitar is now playing better than it ever has.
A. M.
I bought a Gibson tribute about a year back even though I played bass with two bands at the time rather than guitar. About four months ago I was asked to play guitar for a band and we have done about twenty gigs in that time.........the Gibson was going hopelessly out of tune and needed tuned after (almost) every song so I took it to Chris at Mcintyre guitars.
Chris sorted the intonation, the 'floating bridge', did the fret stoning thing (they sounded a bit stoned already when I was previously playing the guitar!) and did a general tweaking and servicing on the guitar intonation etc. I liked that Chris tuned the guitar the night before, stuck it in the gig bag and then just played it to show the difference.
I have waited a few days to write the review, but that same day I collected it I played a gig in the Borders, tuned the guitar upon arrival and played eleven songs (punk stuff) and didn't need to tune the guitar once after the initial one.........a veritable miracle.
It has been lying in the gig bag and on my day off (today) I took it out and needed only to tweak the bottom E string and of course the G........but very minor tuning required.
I am absolutely chuffed, there is no point whatsoever having a guitar that doesn't do all the tasks you need it to do, it is just some strung up wood unless it performs, so I would thoroughly recommend Mcintyre guitars and have already done so........some business coming your way Chris!
Cheers for the chat and advice, and for doing the sanding on the neck while I was there to collect it after I made mention of that, cannot fault the customer service or the end result and I consider your skills a real handy find.
Cheers
Gus

I took in a Joan Cashimira Flamenco 105 to Mcintyre because I something was wrong with the set up which was effecting the sound. He diagnosed the problem, raised the action on one side and did some procedure to the frets and fretboard. The difference is incredible, it's like the guitar has woken up from a deep sleep. Great guy with great skills - I would highly recommend him.
C. D. R.
One of the most amazing luthiers I've met in 25 years, for both attitude and craftmanship.
If your guitar/bass needs love go see Chris, you'll be amazed aswell.

I recently acquired a MIM Telecaster which needed set up correctly. Alex not only set it up perfectly, but also sorted a couple of faults. In the past I've gone elsewhere, but from now on any work, setup or otherwise I need I will be getting Chris to do it for me.
P. W.
Excellent craftsman. He has turned two problem guitars of mine into dream machines, and his rates are very reasonable.
Worst thing about visiting his shop is seeing all his custom builds. It's giving me very expensive ideas. :-)
A. B.

Chris ,got back to me quickly and we discussed the details of the work, cost and offered advice on
Improvements to the guitar. When he looked at the guitar the wiring was pretty shoddy and he advised

G. H.
Chris refretted one my guitars..Great job,,he fully finished the job..Perfect fret dress,no noting out on bends etc..In other words,,he done the job properly...I have had other people do work for me in the past..Often their job is slap dash and not quite finished....The job takes longer as he does his work fully and thoroughly...I would rather wait for a good job than get something back turned over as fast as possible and not quite finished.. He is a nice guy too,,he is not stand offish or anything like that..Chris will be dealing with my guitar stuff in future..
J. T.
Chris was extremely helpful in setting up my bass, along with lots of advice and assistance. Talented luthier, and great guy.
