Reviews of Al Bampton. Guitar Teacher and Specialist music tutor

Al is an INCREDIBLE tutor in music and all aspects of life! I have known him for 10+ years now and he helped me greatly in gaining confidence from the age of 11 so much so that I still play and perform now! I had my first live performance singing and playing guitar with the help and tuition of Al, I absolutely would never had the courage nor confidence to do this without his wonderful teaching methods, patience and compassion 🙌🏻 I have also attached some pictures of our gigs!🎸🎤
Al is always consistent with his students, he can play any song after listening to it a few times AND can write out any song for you to learn!! 🎼 His music theory knowledge is among the best out there, and he can also give you the historical background of music theory so that you can make connections and gain a greater level of understanding that any school syllabus could ever provide. He is seriously the best out there! 🚨
In addition to this, Al has the perfect experience in advising and directing students on how to improve (after all he has taught thousands of students across the globe!). During my school tutoring with him he also taught me aspects of the Sound System and tips for Singing! I will never forget what he said when I was younger 'Absolutely everyone has the ability to sing, it's just learning about pitch' ... I still say that now!
Al Bampton is truly the BEST of the BEST! A great soul who has extensive experience and dedicated his life to playing music, tutoring students of all ages and inspiring everyone to get involved in the industry!
I think of Al a lot when I go back to memories of my school years, he made my time there bearable, he provided me with an education I did not receive from any other teacher. You will thank me later for becoming one of Al's students, they don't make them like him anymore! 😁

I trained under Al from around 1995 and I still class him as my tutor- not just in areas such as guitar and theory, but the important skills such as craftsmanship and performance.
From day one, Al worked to my requirements and my schedule, broadening my musical landscape along the way. He ran showcase gigs for pupils, as a way to learn things such as sound engineering and performance.
Above all, Al offered understanding and has a very matter of fact way of making complex things easy to understand. I was encouraged not only to develop myself as a musician, but as a person and for that I owe a lot to Al.
In 2003 I toured professionally with The Dead Pets and have guested and supported many great acts such as Maha Dev (Quintessence), Alan Davey (Hawkwind), Chris Britton (The Troggs), The Fratellis, Senser, Shana Morrison (Van Morrison’s Daughter), The Beat, The Damned and UK Subs (to name but a few).
I grew and developed my craft alongside people such as Corinne Bailey Rae and Stateless, which was all made possible by Al’s enthusiasm and desire to make music accessible.
I couldn’t recommend highly enough and I couldn’t put into words, how much value Al offers through his work.

Al is a brilliant music teacher which is evident from the high standard of achievement that his pupils have gained. He is dedicated, supportive and observant; he tailors the lessons to your requirements, whether that be music theory, guitar, improvisation, etc.
I have predominately had Al for music theory lessons for the past six years, progressing far quicker with his concise teaching, which covers each level and area of theory in great detail. This style of teaching I have found to be invaluable when learning for the graded exams. I doubt that any of his students would be as confident, accomplished or have achieved as much as we have without his unwavering support and expertise.
I would recommend anyone, no matter what stage you are at, to have lessons with Al. You won't find anyone who is as committed, reliable, or a better teacher.

Al taught me guitar and music for 8 years, from when I was 10 to when I was 18. He is a fantastic teacher. He made sure to understand me and what I wanted so he could tailor his teaching to help me get the most out of guitar and music. And, using his great skill and knowledge built up over his many years of experience, he helped me develop skills and knowledge that will stay with me throughout my life. I can’t recommend him enough.

Al Bampton is to this day one of the most communicative and supportive teachers I have had the privilege to be taught by.
His teaching style is incredibly clear and is complemented by his ability to change the way he teaches depending on the pupil’s personality and particular skills. He has a thorough knowledge of western tonal harmony and is able to convey this knowledge in manageable chunks whilst maintaining an overall view of the bigger picture. This has given me a very solid grounding to go on to study composition.
As a guitarist, Al’s knowledge of styles and genres is rare in its breadth and depth. He has the ability to teach everything from blues to classical, with technical skill and confidence. All of these aspects of Al’s teaching are however dwarfed by his ability to build people's confidence. I have watched him help numerous pupils overcome performance anxiety and self-confidence issues in their lives outside of playing guitar through performing and challenging themselves.
He was also the person to give me my first gig and get me on stage and for that I am incredibly thankful.

I studied with Al for 8 years and during this time he taught me a range of skills including Guitar, Music Theory, Performance, Composition and Song-writing.
Al helped me to become the musician that I wanted to be and also achieve my music qualifications. He differentiates his lessons to fit his students so that they learn what they are most interested to learn as well as all the fundamentals that may underpin this.
Not only is Al a great musician and teacher but he also acts as a good role model and strives to help build student’s confidence and personal development through the joy of music. He has also created a community and a platform around his students, for them to perform at events which he runs within the local music scene, providing invaluable stage time which is often not available to younger aspiring musicians.
What I have learned with Al, I have taken with me as skills and a passion which I will have for the rest of my life. I would whole heartedly recommend him to anyone who is considering learning music.

Al is an outstanding guitar teacher and such a talented musician. I had the pleasure of being taught by him for many years. He makes the lessons enjoyable and caters for everyone’s music tastes. He not only taught me to play guitar but the skills to re-string it and tune it. I performed alongside Al on many occasions at various venues around Leeds and he is incredibly supportive, reassuring and a great person to have beside you. I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to play guitar or anyone who wants to brush up on their skills. I have learnt so much from him.

The defining quality of Al Bampton’s teaching method is that each lesson is customised to the student. I have had the privilege of being taught by Alasdair for seven years and, from day one, he took my mind into account to develop the most efficient and effective teaching strategy for me.
While I have comfortably sat GCSE, A Level and ABRSM Theory exams with the resources and knowledge Al provided me with, I am mostly thankful to have been presented a learning environment in which I had total stylistic and creative freedom. Any unorthodox technique or wacky arrangement I would request was met always without qualm and with great attention to detail.
My musical vision was always prioritised and that is why Al earned my respect from the get-go.

I had Al as my teacher for many years. He was great teacher for both playing and the theory behind it. he gave me all the tools I needed to develop as a player. As a result I have continued to play and develop for years after my lessons finished.
He really encouraged performance through his Sunday afternoon project. This puts students together, allowing less experienced players to learn from the more experienced. Getting students to get on stage and perform.
Definitely a strong recommendation for anyone looking to learn to play!

Al Bampton started teaching me guitar as I entered my teens and for many years after that. I’d had many teachers prior but Al was the only one that I stuck with and who not only taught me guitar but the theory behind music. Without Al i never would have got top marks in school and beyond. I still daily use the lessons I learned to this day.
There are a lot of teachers nowadays, but you will not find a better teacher. Al not only teaches you, but gives you the tools to learn and discover things for yourself! That for me is the true mark of a good teacher 🤘

Al taught me guitar for many years. I learnt to play guitar in many styles and then eventually became comfortable with improvising and singing alongside playing the guitar. Through monthly performances Al helped me develop confidence in performing on stage, and also to accept that we make mistakes when performing live (and how hardly anyone actually notices the mistakes). Though I stopped having guitar lessons due to moving cities I've definitely taken the skills I learnt forward and apply them to this day. 110% recommend.

Highly recommend. I had lessons with Al from 2012 to 2021, through school and privately - whether it's just for fun, for GCSE, A Level, or further, he'll prepare you for it all. Unparalleled in his knowledge of music, both theory and practically - across all genres, instruments - he understands music on a different level. He'll show you the skills you need to apply yourself, think for yourself, both in music and life. Lovely guy, pleasure to have been taught by him.

Can't recommend Al Bampton enough. Patiently and professionally teaches all styles and genres of guitar playing to a very high level. Invaluable expertise and experience of playing, practicing, and performing.
Very good with young and shy students, as I was!

I had lessons with him for 7 years. Safe to say he's a great teacher who knows what he's doing
