Reviews of Tom Hawthorn Music

I've only started drum lessons about 3 months ago - at the age of 40 - so I am probably one of Tom's 'mature students'! But I know he teaches to a a variety of people, including professionals. Although it may be too late for me to make this a profession or career, Tom is very encouraging. He's a very skilled drummer and an excellent and patient teacher. I also really appreciate the fact that he's happy to help even after the lessons, if I have any questions while I am practicing at home. I am learning fast and having a lot of fun, and that's thanks to him! I strongly recommend Tom as a drum teacher for anyone at any level.

Tom was my first ever drum teacher, with whom I had lessons from aged 14 to 19 – I'm now 27 and working as a professional musician, with Tom's influence being an integral part of my development. Not only did Tom provide me with everything I needed technically and musically in order to succeed, he was also a big inspiration for me as a young player – a teacher is a role model and Tom is most definitely an excellent one!
I visited Tom for a lesson in late 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed linking back up with him again. The facilities at the studio are really impressive, and Tom is able to record what you play in lessons – critical in terms of analysing timing and touch on the instrument, and this record/playback system allows the student to hear what Tom is hearing.
Tom is exceptionally patient and is able to explain instructions clearly and succinctly. Whether you're starting out, or are a seasoned pro in the game, you need lessons with Tom Hawthorn!

Tom has taught our son since he was 10 (he's now 16) and has been great throughout. He's a really patient teacher, but makes the whole thing really enjoyable. The set-up in his studio is amazing, and our son's drumming has developed hugely over the years. Can't recommend Tom highly enough.

I decided to take Tom up on his offer of a free introductory lesson. I’d seen him play for Back Chat Brass a few times so knew he had some serious talent.
I’ve been drumming for about 18 years or so now but not had a lesson for a long time!
Tom was great, very relaxed and friendly. It can often be awkward playing in front of someone who has a far superior ability to you but I found that I was relaxed and comfortable to showcase what I could do.
It didn’t take long for my technique to be expertly and delicately picked apart and some pointers set for improvement, which is what I was after.
When the world calms down, I’ll definitely be back for more!

Tom is a brilliant drum tutor who focuses on all aspects of your drumming abilities! Over the past few months i’ve had lessons in his very high quality drum studio which allows you to play and listen back to recordings but also to focus on various techniques.
As i’m writing this mid pandemic, Tom offers Drum tutoring over Zoom which is just as effective as in- person lessons. Regardless of what stage you are at in your drumming career, Tom can help you over zoom with virtually any drumming related problem whether that’s drum pad work or drum kit work.
Coming from a 16 year old student, I can’t recommend Tom enough to anybody. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what standard you are at. The drum lessons Tom provides are always intuitive, comfortable and informative!

I'd been toying with the idea of getting some lessons for a while, I hadn't had any for around 6 years or so, so when I saw Tom's ad for free trial lessons it was a no brainer for me.
I was fully expecting that I'd want to try out a number of teachers to see who worked well for me, but following the first lesson I knew this was unnecessary.
Tom was ideal!
I'd not gone to the lesson with anything in particular that I wanted to work on, i just wanted help to identify some technical points which I may not be able to work out on my own.
Within the first hour lesson, Tom had diagnosed a whole bunch of ways for me to improve and had me sounding and feeling way better on the pad and the kit.
Since then we've developed a loose path forward with this work and looked at how its applicable on the kit.
I am blown away by his musical facility in both teaching and playing and look forward to returning for lessons after the current lockdown.
Tom is welcoming, friendly and down to earth, his feedback is detailed and critiques are always given in a way that allows the student to see how they can build their playing.
The studio is easy to find and has everything you could possibly need: drums, pads, recording equipment, and a plethora of learning material.
For the purposes of this review I have tried to think of any areas for improvement for Tom, but honestly the only things that have negatively impacted the lessons have been out of Tom's control (I'm talking covid19).
In Summary, Tom is excellent and I can't reccomend him enough!
I don't believe any old teacher is right for everybody and Tom is no exception (he won't be right for absolutely everyone), however I do belive that his teaching would suit and benefit the majority of players of the instrument.
He's a top guy and really enjoyable to play and learn with. Also his kit is fantastic!
