I bought a higher-end violin made by Emad Isapour from John (see pictures), following a positive experience with another violin - he fixed a fallen sound post and made it sing like a sweet lark.
For this new violin, John let me try out different violins before I settled on this one and I must say it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made. The sound is smooth with a deep, woody, textured sweetness like manuka honey. It’s also got excellent harmonics, projection and volume. The workmanship is gorgeous too - the patina has a monogram effect - the variations in wood grain comes on and off under different lighting. John set up the violin nicely with Pirazzi strings and a well-shaped bridge. I played it for a week but found that the sound seemed to have lost its brilliance a little so I went back to him. He suggested that different factors such as temperature, humidity and the playing in, etc would affect the tone over time. So he made further adjustments, allowing me to find the most optimum tone before fixing the sound post position. I was amazed how the tone significantly improved immediately after these adjustments. After playing for a few weeks the tone just gets better and better all the time.
While I’ve been often tempted to buy a violin online with competitive prices and multiple options available, I’ve experienced quite a few misses. I now appreciate why it’s always better to go to a luthier directly to try out and buy an instrument even when you’re paying extra because it’s properly set up and comes with warranty. John offers a six-month set up warranty and I thought he was kidding at first but I went back to him at least twice to do adjustments and I wasn’t charged a single penny. Also it's reassuring that social distancing measures are in place every time I go there.
Really happy with my experiences with John. Highly recommended.

Great service, awesome price!
I asked John to make a custom arm rest for my 'Oud. He did a great job, he was quick, professional and very friendly. I have been to denmark street before to ask for adjustments to this instrument. Some luthiers simply wouldn't work on this instrument, while others would quote exorbitant prices. It seems that John's focus is on help others get his instruments fixed while at the same time prioritising those who need the instrument fixed right away. I would definitely go back should I need to.

John did a great job repairing the loose bracing and cracked top of my Paul Fischer Premier. He also set up the guitar perfectly and allowed me to sit in and observe the process. He even let me test the guitar in the middle of the process after making minor adjustments to make sure it was perfect.
I brought the same guitar to him twice and each service was done in <1 week. I highly recommend his services.

I had my violin repaired and fully outfitted at John's workshop earlier in 2018 (I think this was in April). I had always gone to Noden Guitars in central London for touch ups with my violins, but they had been inconsistent recently, so I tried John's service for a change as I needed a complete overhaul of one of my fiddles. I was amazed by the swiftness in his repair service. Not only that, he managed to include a set of new, high quality tuning pegs for free. He put in a new sound post, replaced the aging tailpiece and end pin, chinrest, bridge and strings. He even gave me a really good tip on how to remove dried on resin residues from the violin body.
He did all of this with a turn around of less than 48 hours which is very quick for a busy luthier to do! I'll certainly do business with him exclusively from now on.

I bought a cello at auction which turned out to be untuneable due to a badly fitting peg. John fixed it in a few minutes. He also explained to me that the reason the cello looked so charmingly antique was that it was approximately 50 years old - NOT made in 2020, as advertised by the auctioneers and alleged on the dodgy looking label! (This also explained the ill fitting peg...) However now that the cello is playable I'm very happy with it and very grateful to John for restoring it to a functional condition.

John added a moth design inlay on the third fret using mother of pearl and it came out great!

Unbelievable. To say I am grateful to John is an understatement. I gave my Gibson J45 Custom to him convinced that the top needed re-spraying with nitrocellulose. John took great care and polished it back as new, and I really mean as new.

John guided me how to make a ukulele. He is very kind and patient and absolutely an expert in hand making instruments. I am sure that is a wonderful experience to us.

John is the real deal!, after snapping the headstock on my guitar a few weeks ago I got in touch with him and agreed to take it down to him that weekend. One week later my guitar is now fully repaired, serviced, and he also fixed some loose wiring as well sorting out frer. My guitar feels brand new now and has never played better, all done for a reasonable price too!. Highly recommended, thanks John!.

John did the setup for my electric guitar and I couldn't be more happy. The instrument feels and sounds so much better and I only wished I did this earlier!
He also performed the work quickly and provided some useful tips and things to look after.
Highly recommended and I'll be back for any future job.
