Can’t recommend 81 guitar enough, after trying unsuccessfully trying to replace the nut on my beloved 90’s Mexican strat I thought I had ruined the guitar for good. Thanks to Simon the old girl has a new lease of life and plays better than ever. Simon is helpful and happy to offer advice and suggestions about the work needed, I asked for a battery box for the Emgs and he suggested the rout under the scratch plate a perfect solution. Will be using him again in future and as I said at the start well worth your time and money ( very reasonable prices for such high quality work). Thanks again. 11 out of Ten! Nick

Have followed 81 Guitar Works on Instagram for ages and have always loved seeing what various guitars come in and are worked on. Now was time for my ‘78 Fender Musicmaster! Simon was great with communication and keeping me up to date with how it was getting on with photos and video which massively made me feel my bass was in great hands! Teaching me why he was doing certain processes specifically with my bass because of the period of time that Fenders were making the guitars, so Simon definitely knows his stuff, that’s for sure! When I first had the bass I could tell it was an old thing that needed a lot of TLC, after having it back from 81 Guitar Works it really feels comfortable to play and can really hold its own which I was hugely skeptic it may never be able to do originally. Couldn’t be happier with the work that Simon did. Took an ESP Eclipse for a bit of TLC. Had a full fret level and setup, and it plays amazingly. The guitar has great sentimental value to my partner and I so wanted it to be in safe hands. Work is second to none. Couldn’t recommend Simon enough. I dropped my yamaha acoustic in to Simons at 81 guitar works for a stainless steel re fret and setup, a new pickup system to be installed, some new tuner heads and a new bone nut and saddle to be installed aswell. Simon took in my Ibanez RG550 and transformed it into an absolute beast. Stainless steel re-fret with optimised setup has resulted in effortless bending and fabulous feel. I was lucky enough to track down and purchase a guitar I've been hunting for for some time. Like most second hand guitars, it needed a decent set up and fret wear sorting. I've been following Simon at 81 guitar works on Instagram and hadn't realised he was based so near to me. Simon's a really good guy and very knowledgeable. He's done an amazing job on the frets, they're beautifully polished and a brilliantly cut and polished nut. The guitar plays amazingly now, and I've been plugged in for half the day. Great service, had the head stock of my Gibson sg repaired, the repair is now invisible. Kept up to date with pictures and I'm over the moon with the result. Premium work at a frankly unbelievable price. 81guitar does an incredible job, above and beyond expectations. Repaired dents on the neck of my USA strat, just literally made them disappear, neck looks and feels like new. Have also just realised that he has filed down my fret ends to perfectly smooth and symmetrical finish, which was an extra level of detail and attention that I didnt request or expect (or get informed of when I picked it back up!). Will 100% use again, although hopefully one day I'll learn not to throw my guitars around....

I was told about Simon by word of mouth and was highly recommended. I had problems with the guitar nut and constantly going out of tune far too quickly. It also needed fret levelling as it had awful buzzing on the higher strings I couldn’t fix myself. Simon was very quick to respond to my message and very helpful. I took my guitar to him and he went through everything regarding what he needed to do and a week later had it all done for me. I can honestly say I am more then pleased with his work, very neat work on the guitar nut, no more buzz and stays in tune perfectly. Only guy I will go to for guitar work from here on out.

I heard about Simon through word of mouth, which is always a good sign. I made contact to see if Simon could help with some large grooves on my acoustic fretboard and as I was local arranged a drop off and have a look. My guitar is a 1984 Sigma (made under licence for Martin guitars as a D35) which I’ve owned since 1999 and thought it was time to see if the grooves could be repaired. After chatting with Simon I agreed to replace the nut and bridge with bone and a full re-fret was needed to remove the grooves. I also requested it be set up for 12s as it had only had 11s on it. Simon kept me posted as he progressed the repair on the fretboard which was reassuring as the grooves were deep. The refret is unnoticeable even the yellow/cream binding is as before! The fretboard has a rich, deep lustre and the grooves are no more. The headstock and logo is now looking great after a polish. I’ve now had the guitar back few weeks and I can’t believe the difference in the tone, playability and the now unbelievable resonance and sustain! It’s like a completely new guitar and I couldn’t be happier with it! Simon has really unlocked it’s potential and hit a real sweet spot!! I was not expecting it to sound this good! Had an amazing experience getting 2 guitars fixed at 81 Guitar Works. Both had a fair few issues and one I thought might not ever play well as a couple of other people had already tried to fix it up with no success. Simon was great talking me through all of the work that needed doing including re wiring and custom nut making. Great value for the difference it has made and the work was completed very quick. Took both guitars straight into the studio to record and they played like new - Can't recommend enough! Simon even hooked me up with finding someone selling a guitar I had been hoping to buy for a while - Above and beyond from a great dude!

I took my Levin Goliath 1960’s acoustic to Simon to assess what needed to be done to see about getting it back into the condition it deserves to be in. It did need a fair bit of work doing to it and Simon talked me through the procedures he would have to go through to bring it back to its original glory. He did inform me that the work would take some time due to the types of procedure he would have to carry out. I told him that was no problem and so the work was carried out. I picked up the guitar on Sunday (18th July) and was amazed by the transformation. Simon had done a tremendous job and he talked me through what he had done. He did an excellent job and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him.

I was recently given a guitar for my birthday (the rather lovely and very pointy Kingdom SLVT) but the action was a little high for my liking. I also have a cheap but decent Epiphone acoustic whose action was so high that whoever set it up in the factory should be publicly flogged. Anyway, I did a bit of Googling and found Simon who had loads of positive reviews, so I booked the 2 guitars in and dropped them off a few days later. I was told the turnaround would be approximately 12 working days. This was a barefaced lie, because 2 days later Simon emailed me to say the work had been completed. Wow. I picked them up today, and what can I say? The Kingdom is no more or less pointy, but Christ, it feels and plays like a dream. Even the cheapy Epiphone feels like a much more expensive guitar, and sounds ace. Thanks Simon - I can't recommend you enough 👍🏼

Took in my Epiphone Les Paul that had been sitting in its case for around 10 years, it had never been serviced since buying it from the store 16 years ago. I went in not knowing exactly what was needed, and Simon was very honest in his recommendations with no judgement of my limited knowledge. He ended up fitting a new nut along with a general set up and now it sounds better than it ever has. I felt the price for it all was very reasonable, I was impressed with the quality of the work, and I received the guitar back a lot sooner than I expected. When collecting the guitar I was shown through everything that had been done, Simon had plenty of good advice for maintaining the guitar, and offered a guarantee on the work carried out in case it didn’t play how I wanted. Simon never ceases to amaze me with the quality of his work. He has just put a set of Seymour Duncan La Brea pick ups into my Tele, plus a service. Totally changed the sound of the Tele for the better from the stock Fender pick ups. The also guitar now looks as if it brand new.

I handed Simon my 2003 Gibson Les Paul for a full set up and new Nut. I used to think my guitar sounded good until Si got his hands on it and my god does it sound like a Gibson again! Had a full refret, new nut and setup done on my Les Paul, as well as a setup on a Strat. The work was done very quickly and the guitars play better than they have in ages afterwards. The refret was particularly well done, as it managed to preserve the cream neck binding which wrapped over the ends of the frets. Highly recommended!

I got in contact because the strings on my strat were breaking too regularly. Simon quickly found the problem and various other little things that were impacting the guitar. I got a regular set-up and I cannot believe how it plays now! I thought it played fine before but I was wrong. The action is perfect and it is so smooth! On top of this, I wanted to replace one of the pickups but had no idea where to start. We had a chat about the sound I was going for and Simon was able to point me in the right direction and install them with the setup. This strat is now a monster! I wish I could post a picture of my face when I first played it through my cab. Holy ****! This is the place you need to go for any guitar related issues/queries. You won’t be disappointed. What a great service and all-round experience! Exceptional restoration work and setup on my 1980's Westone Rainbow I in a poor state with much sentimental value, a pleasant and personable approach too. Ive taken my guitars to Simon before for setup works and over the moon with how they played after the work was done. This time had an annoying issue with a rattling/vibration issue on an old strat of mine which i couldnt pin down to where it was coming from. It made the guitar less playable as was always present. Simon tracked it down and fixed the problem and plays better than ever before. If you are serious about your playing and you want your guitars to play as good as they can, go see Simon.

I managed to break the truss rod adjusting nut of an old hand made Eggle Berlin. Via some forums I contacted the original luthier who, after describing the process needed to fix it, kindly declined the repair as it required a lot of work and he was close to retirement.... Luckily I discovered Simon as he is fairly local. He managed to dissect the neck and broken adjuster, sourced a company to manufacture a new piece, re tapped the thread himself then rehoused the complete truss rod assembly and rebuilt the neck finishing it with a fret level and polish. Simon kept me up to date with some great surgery pics which is always hepful for provenance. My guitar is no longer a broken guitar, it's not even a repaired guitar, it's the best it's ever been. I definitely recommend 81 Guitar Works.

Took my Gibson Midtown Standard to Simon, which had nasty file marks all over the binding from the factory, to see if there was anything he could do to clean it up and make it easier for me to sell. When I collected it at the weekend you could have convinced me it was a brand new guitar. Honestly worked a miracle here. Only negative point is that I wanted to sell the guitar to make some space, and now I no longer want to sell it!

Just got my old ESP back from Simon, upgraded with EMG 81/85 pickups and full a set up, and it feels like a brand new guitar. Also sounds incredible. Been finding it difficult to put it down since! Highly recommended.

He surgested the best course of action, & the guitar was left for the repairs. Took a Tele modern player, which was a gift and which I really didn't like to Simon. He changed the non-standard 3 pickup config with a 2 pickup noiseless combination (including a custom made new pickguard), replaced the poorly wired 5 way with a 3 way and did a full set up. Absolutely love the guitar now. I changed the string gauge 6 weeks later which put the intonation out. Took it back to Simon and he sorted it for me on the spot with no extra change as part of the 2 month warranty he provides as standard. I can't reccomend 51 Guitar works enough. Expert service and Great value.

Aria Pro II Laser Electric Classic Bass Setup. Mine was over 30 years old and never been adjusted. Nice setup work carried out and its like a new instrument to me (Without paying for a new one). I had some corrosion issue on the bridge which came back shiney. Simon's rates are similar to others I found, but he was better at communication. SImon also gave some polite advice (without laughing) at how strings should be put on, unlike the way I had done it.

Hi I had a 80s Aria Semi acoustic that i haven't played for some time. Its was hard going , felt like scratching the strings over railings. I was considering buying a new guitar . I took it 81 for an opinoin and decided to try new frets and set up , and wo! Plugged it in yesterday and I now have a good looking classic strum box to play . At the same time I had a 2 year old Martin Acoustic set up and again a joy to play .
