This place never disappoints. A beautiful building, warm, welcoming and really different in design. Brilliant theatre productions at affordable prices. First class theatre entertainment. The Electric rosary production was outstanding, we laughed and cried, brilliant!!

🏴Amazing place in Manchester. Basically, a theater has been built inside of the old exchange of Manchester, and there is a special theater. It's a 360 degree theater where in the middle there is the stage. Actors and actresses can enter whichever entrance so, it makes the experience unique. Furthermore, it has glass ceilings therefore you can observe the decorations of the building. The building has some eateries spotted in the surrounding of the theater. It's really a must go place if you visit the city, so check out for the next plays.

Great Theatre, good restaurant and gift shop, staff very helpful.
C. S.
This is an incredible venue, a theatre within an old stock exchange, great bar , nice cafe and great small theatre . The play was great and the 360 seating is fantastic, well worth a visit and doing great stuff to support the arts , must do more of this
S. H. S. (.
This is an excellent place to just chill out and sit if you need a quiet place in the busy central Manchester.
L. P.
Really beautiful theatre with very friendly people! The first time I went I got to see the theatre room even though it was closed and they explained everything about the theatre hall.
I went again today for Nora: A Doll's House, and the musical was absolutely stunning. Very emotional and really enjoyed it. Great experience overall!
D. R.
Access to the venue was an issue. I was with friends who are disabled and the lift for them to gain access was out of use. The next issue was with the location of the toilets 🚻 which could only be accessed by going up a flight of stairs. Ideal for able bodied persons but not so much for disabled people. The event itself was great and a good opportunity for networking.

Love this theatre so much! We've been a few times and the quality of the shows is always excellent. There is something about the circle stage that we love! Can't wait to visit again in the near future.
A. W.
Amazing venue and with stage set up in the round, all seats give a great view and great close up experience (I suppose sitting right up at the top level might be a bit high, but it's not like being up in the gods like at some theatres). Great place to see a play!
M. I.
Lovely hidden from the bustle of the Christmas markets this time of year. We stopped in 'The Rivals' for a hot chocolate on a cold November day, a little respite from the crowds outside.
C. S.
Really proud to have this excellent theatre, local to me. I've seen some excellent original productions here, as well as interesting stagings of more classic works. The staff are really polite and helpful when booking school trips, too.
I.
Absolutely wonderful experience at an amazing building. Loved every moment of our night!
M. T.
Great Play. Good Value. Really enjoyed it. Missed the little shops at The Royal Exchange (add to the atmosphere). Hope they come-back, as we get-back to 'normal'. Maria T.
C. H.
A good thought provocing play, but as far as facilities at the theatre are concerned, it would be good if the Rivals stayed open for at least half an hour after the performance to enable a last drink.
T. S.
There is amazing cafe and nice shops inside the royal exchange theatre. It is an amazing place to visit with your family.
m. s. a.
incredible! went here to see a performance of Nora- A Doll’s House and it did not disappoint! lovely atmosphere and a great time, would definitely recommend coming here if you have some time to kill in manchester 😁👍

A few months ago, I went on a special 'Buckt' tour to have a look behind the scenes at this Theater. As someone who has always been into set design and performing it was exciting for me to be walked through a day in the life of the people who set up this wonderful theater. From what I remember, the metal structure of the Theater itself was built in the 70s, and while it looks odd, it brings a whole new perspective and experience to watching a performance. I feel really lucky that I got to have a look all backstage too!
k. v.
This beautiful theatre was one of the last stops on our guided tour around the city. Since it was pretty cold outside we decided to book tickets for the show of that afternoon. We had beautiful seats all most on the stage.
The actors are really good and have beautiful voices. The show was really nice and easy to follow even tho we are from the Netherlands and English is not our first language
A. L.
I absolutely love this theatre! It's small and great for intimate shows and the 360° stage gives everyone a great view of the set from every angle. Due to the unique stage, I guess it's suited to certain productions. The theater is also located within the Royal Exchange building which is architecturally beautiful! There's a lift for wheelchair users and ramps to get into the theatre, ground level toilets, restaurant and bar.
A. W.
Always a great night here, beautiful building with lots of history. Great plays with a modern contemporary twist. Don't forget to validate you parking at the theatre booking office, if your using deansgate parking you get it half price!
J. L.
Such a lovely theatre! The actors were brilliant and staff very friendly :). Would 100% recommend!
D. L.

c. c.
Excellent , really loved the play here , great intimate venue and amazing value for money, support local theatre and you wont be disappointed . Great cafe in the building and coat service £1. You must get some culture, get involved , better than cinema and not much more
P. M.
Helpful staff. Masks available and free glasses of water. The production of A Dolls House was stunning. If you don't like heights ensure you are in the lower level.

Had a look around the theatre on a Thursday afternoon & very impressed with the decor & the sheer size of the place. A nice coffee shop & a bar too. Definitely worth a visit.
C. G.
Guys & Dolls was a great show. Small rotunda stage so really close to the action. Great caste and wonderful voices. Well with the trip up from London for the day. Central location was also a bonus as close to lots of places to eat and shop.
h. a.
When I went there the gallery displays were minimal but IT IS a pretty place to hang around!
T. L.
Such a wonderful and unique space to experience live theatre housed in a beautiful building. So happy to see it open again.
M. P.
always love a visit to the royal exchange, all the staff are so so lovely and there’s always a new and interesting show to go see:)
M. S.
Love this place, the building is amazing and the theatre is ingenious. Really feel like you are part of the performance. A must for any theatre buffs.
L. R.
My all time favourite theatre and yet another great performance last night....Electric Rosary.
K. S.
Lovely theatre. The food and drinks have a large array, and are reasonably priced. It's centrally located with bars and cages surrounding it. The shop is lovely with lots of trinkets to buy. The theatre itself is wonderfully intimate, there isn't really any bad seating, if you sit front row be prepared to be sat basically on the floor though. But go see anything here, it will be worth it. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
C. P.
Beautiful theatre and excellent play. Downside, uncomfortable seating which spoils experience.
J. L.
I cannot tell you how fantastic it was to be back inside this beautiful building after so long. I had tears in my eyes. It was so wonderful to sit and have coffee and cake at 'the rivals'. Welcome back. You have been missed x
S. P.
Always a great venue. Electric Rosary not such a good choice to welcome people back to the theatre.
J. B.
Really enjoyed it beautiful building I'm glad they left it as it was and put the theatre inside the building it's very unusual
p. s.
Always a pleasure to visit such a great theatre,.
The whole exchange experience is always a treat
A. D.
Enjoyed the show yesterday, quirky, funny, good music and interesting Scottish Folklore. Thanks again to all in the Royal Exchange Theatre
P. K.
Excellent! One of the best and most forward thinking theatres around. Opportunities for people to get involved, fantastic young directors, and incredible new writing. Great place to catch a show, or simply meet up with friends for a coffee in stunning surroundings.
m. m.
Great place of entertainment. The small size and crucible shape make the stage easily visible from any seat
H. B.
Hard to fault this wonderful building. Not only does it house an excellent in the round theatre, but a bar, a cafe and a restaurant. Staff very friendly. Building immaculate. A superb experience. Highly recommended even if you just want a drink!
j.
Unique setting! Amazing venue used to host amazing shows x
A. F.
The Royal Exchange is a beautiful building with marble pillars. There's a lift for those who can't manage the stairs. The theatre takes up the middle of the interior space. A bar, café and shop surround the theatre. We went to the theatre to see a production of Macbeth with Lucy Ellison playing the title role. It was a fabulous performance.
A. B.
Very nice. I feel better when I were moving by
F. P.
This is a great place to grab something to eat or see a show. Built in an old corn exchange the design of the venue is beautiful. What I love about it is that it's a secluded haven from the hussel and bussel of central Manchester.
M. W.
Went to see Mercury Rev play at the exchange. To be honest, there are going to be some compromises staging music gigs (which must inevitably by pretty static) in a theatre in the round as there are bound to be a fair proportion of the audience behind / to the side of the band. That said, you can't beat the intimate feel and it's certainly a different experience. Well worth it.
J. C.
Such s beautiful place. I particularly love the artifacts
J. S.
Love this outlet. Plenty of pure quality shops and places to eat.
L. A.
Lovely place .gorgeous atmosphere . Lovely person in the cafe ...coffee itself isn't nice
G. B.
Fantastic experience brilliant performance by a fabulous group of actors
C. H.
Went into a shop and bought some wedding anniversary cards. Did not struggle
V. P.
Very modern concept. Circular theatre in the middle of a massive traditional hall. They could have mentioned this clearly when I was booking though. Loved seeing West Side Story here!
M. S.
A great venue, beautiful building. Two bars and a very nice restaurant. Make sure you visit if you are in Manchester.
M. L.
Seen plays here crossing 30+ years. Amazing theater and exciting productions
J. V.
Es una teatro tan Historico! muy bonito, saber que la reina de Inglaterra en su epoca le dio el visto bueno le da ese toque magico, el Lugar es Magico.
The theatre is amazing, im from Guatemala and we dont have things like that here, I went and was told the story about it and how the Queen approved it, tha place is a historic place.
A. A. S.
One of the great places to spend time at the heart of the city . Plenty of restaurants and shops
C. M.
Stunning building, great theatre and fabulous productions. Always a pleasure.
H.
Went to see Westside Story. It was excellent! Music, dancing and whole production was so well thought through. I've booked tickets for another production on the strength of this one.
T. S.
Friendly staff, great shows. With a reasonably priced cafe bar.
E. H.
Really enjoyed watching Macbeth here. The building is stunning and the theatre is well organised.
A. W.
My favourite Theatre in Manchester. Beautiful buikding.
B. C.
Very good but could have done with a few more seats.
J. D.
Really enjoy going to this Theatre. All the staff are helpful and polite.
S. D.
My favourite theatre, the line up of plays is always so interesting and the set design is brilliantly creative. It is such a cool space.
S. L.
Great venue for a play, well organised in respect of the Covid regulations
H. B.
Beautiful building, used to be an old market place. Great place to sit for hours with a cup of coffee listening to the quiet tinkles of the theatre
I. M.
It's one of the best theatres in the country!
K. S.
Amazing theatre
P. G.
This building is beautiful and the shows they stage are magical. I love being in it!
c. t.
This theatre has always produced amazing work and its set in the most beautiful building with excellent catering and the kindest staff you could ever wish for.
A. E.
The Royal Exchange is a great theatre. Even if you don't go for a show pop in for a coffee and admire the stunning interior of the building.
P. a. P.
Amazing place, in my top 10 places in Manchester
A. R.
Fabulous building, rich in history. Highly recommend visiting the independent shops in the arcade or catching a show in the circular theatre. Wonderful ambience and unique experience.
J. J.
Wonderful play and lovely theatre! Well worth a visit!
M. S.
Beautiful architecture and a fantastic space for a theatre performance
N. F.
Great iconic theatre and arts space. Great atmosphere and also a great shopping experience with unique boutique shops and bars
A. M.
Superb. The restaurant is great, the little gift shop has interesting quirky gifts and the building is stunning. You have already had a good time before you see your show!
The theatre is in the round, there is nowhere for the actors to hide. Every detail of a production springs to life and captures your attention. You are transported to different times and different worlds with a thousand fellow travellers.
If you get a chance to visit, I recommend you grab that chance and do it. If you are seeing a show, arrive early and soak in the atmosphere.
I. B.
A great night out was had by the all of the group I visited with. The theater is in the round with excellent views from all of the seats, even where we were say in the gods. The rotating stage means that you get different views of the plays performed. The bars situated in the complex provide refreshments at the interval and at the end should you desire.
H. Z.
Great intimate theatre, definitely best to sit on the ground level. On the two levels above you end up leaning forward to view
J. V.
Great theatre and lovely staff.
J. D.
I've been here twice and it never fails to impress me. The structure is beautiful, and the productions are amazing.
My only negatives are that the bathrooms are quite small and usually packed with lines, and that intermission is a bit short. Hardly enough time to have a confection and coffee and a bathroom break!
But the actors are talented, the plays are wonderful. Would highly recommend.
B. B.
Wonderful in the round theatre making for an intimate and involved experience. Both shows have been absolutely excellent (Little Shop of Horrors and The Producers). Great acoustics, comfortable seats, handy for restaurants in and around venue. Couldn't be better
A. L.
Very interesting venue to visit whether to go to the theatre or to eat in the cafe. Look out for the original exchange price trading board on same wall as cafe near to ceiling.
S. H.
Great theatre and an interesting play
L. P.
My first time here and the theatre is beautiful
So unusual with the actual theatre almost like a pod within a magnificent old building.
The bar area is lovely and there is a restaurant although I did not eat there. My only criticism is that due to the fact that you have to have your drink in a plastic glass to take it into the theatre, there is a horrific amount of avoidable single use plastic waste. I really don't know why they don't invest in some kind of unbreakable reusable 'glass' containers to take drinks into the theatre.
K. M.
Saw the producers on a school trip it was absolutely hilarious even the teachers loved it l.
O. L.
The most unique theatre design in the world
Ú. F.
Gorgeous lunch in the restaurant. Lovely menu. Superb personal service
T. A. A.
Amazing cathedral-like space superbly reimagined. Even if you're not seeing a play, it's definitely worth stepping inside to gaze up at the huge columns, the large domes and the alien glass and metal structure that's landed in the middle of it. You can wander in during daytime. There's food and drink available from "The Rivals", including tea/coffee/snacks from their refreshment stand and more substantial fare from their bar & restaurant. A fantastic setting to sit having a bite to eat. The theatre itself is comfortable with good views and stages high quality productions. A great way to spend an evening.
R. B.
Went to a captioned event, really well presented. Seats comfortable, at stage level where we sat, access good, staff helpful and prices for food and drinks standard theatre prices. Would recommend it. Parking in central Manchester is difficult so recommend getting the bus, team or train in of possible.
S. V.
Host great plays and you feel apart of the play as it's a smaller theatre. Building inside is absolutely beautiful
P. F.
An absolutely stunning building. The old cotton exchange from the time of the industrial revolution has been turned into a modern theatre. Good facilities to have drink before a theatre play. Absolutely interesting kind of architecture inside. And WEST SIDE STORY it the highlight at the moment. But I'm afraid it's already sold gut.
R. W.
Great venue if a little on the cold side on this occasion. Wuthering Heights was very entertaining and the set was very impressive. The cast gave it their all but the subject matter is so bleak it was hard to cheer and clap at the end even though they deserved it.
A.
Brilliant night out, first theatre visit after lockdown, worth every penny!
A. C.
Beautiful interior and the actual theatre has a very interesting round layout I hadn't seen before. This does limit the amount of props and the area of action but it feels much more personable being this close to the stage. Every seat has a great and mostly unobstructed view and depending on your seat, you'll have a different perspective on what's happening onstage. This was my first visit but surely not the last.
L. C.
Wonderful building. The figures for the last day of cotton trading are still on the wall. Easy access. Toilets. Very impressed with the availability of water at the interval. Bar and soft drinks/ice cream available. Nearest metro stop is Exchange Square.
Great theatre
T. H.
Every year we take our two little girls to see a kids show at the Royal exchange and we always have a great day out. The theatre itself is a wonderful venue and a good variety of shows , embraces real diversity and different viewpoints. Not always cheap but you get what you pay for.
N. L.
Firstly the building is tremendous and even if you are not a theatre goer just go in and see what was achieved by placing a structure within the old corn exchange to hold performances in the round.
(Hobson's choice was brilliant and funny and well recommended)
There are several places to obtain drinks either as a guest or just dropping in.
The bar is excellent! Well stocked with several cask ales and the red willow beer worth several pints!
All other drinks available and just a great place.
I. J.
Love live theatre. Atmospheric. Great use of limited stage props. Gets some famous actors. Always interesting and mixed playlist. Wish they would stick more rigidly to original play script. I have little sympathy for "modern interpretations". Reasonable prices. Good viewing positions.
A. L.
I've seen lots of plays over the years, and this is absolutely the jewel in Manchester's cultural crown.
The theatre is a space age steel and glass construction fitted inside the original old commodities exchange. It's stunning. Then, when you're inside, the plays held are in the round so most people have a good view and are close to the action, unless you're high up.
They don't have room for elaborate sets, but the production team do a brilliant job with simple light, sound and a few props to set the scene.
Finally, actors come in and out of the stage through all of the many entrances, and sometimes involve the audience for a bit of fun.
I rarely give something 5 stars, but this easily achieves it.
P. E.
We've seen a couple of fantastic performances here over the years, most recently the producers musical, but also other drama and stand up comedy.
The experience is always improved by the theatre round stage and brilliant viewing angles. We've never had poor seats.
S. R.
Lovely building and an unusual theatre layout which I really liked
K. E.
One of the most beautiful buildings in the world! An amazing place to see a show, meet for coffee or enjoy a fabulous dinner in The Rivals Bar and Restaurant. The gift shop is also full of unique and amazing items which make perfect presents 😁😁
H. N. H.
Great place for a theatre. The old Manchester Exchange. Excellent in the round stage inside a structure that looks like a giant lunar landing craft. If you are at floor level you are almost touching the actors. Brilliant, totally brilliant place to visit even if you're not going to see a play. Coffee shop and gift shop are easily accessible.
N. L.
My family and I took part in a family yoga fun day. It was based on the children's book "Monkey Puzzle" and it was such great fun.
The royal exchange theatre is such an impressive building, the architecture is splendid and the various displays around kept us engaged for a while.
F. L.
Always a great experience. Been coming here regularly - and recommending it - since 1988. My all-time favourite theatre: excellent ambience, wonderful productions. Backstage tour worth a go, too.
R. C.
Fantasic little theatre in the round. Makes for an intimate space for drama to occur. Was thrilled to be here after many years since I was a student in Manchester. Performance of Gypsy was utterly superb - it felt fresh and innovative. Can't wait to find another opportunity to revisit.
D. G.
Its an amazing building inside. The small circular theatre is built within the large exchange so gives you an intimate insight into going to see a show. It astounds me every time how many lines the small cast remember. Frankenstein last week was enthralling and enjoyed every minute. You wont be disappointed visiting here
O. M.
Staff were wonderful. Moved my mother and party of over 80 year olds into far more comfortable seating areas. Lovely, cheerful and the production of Wuthering Heights was stunning. Wasn't looking forward to it at all but a refreshing take. A very different Heathcliff and a wonderfully powerful and raw performance from Kathy. This topped off with beautiful sings and music make it a worthwhile visit. Go you won't be disappointed.
R. Y.
My daughter and I watched "Guys and Dolls" at this theatre. Excellent show, very interesting setting. I was involved in amateur dramatics in the 1960s in Zambia, and I was most impressed with the production and amenities. Well worth the visit.
However, be advised that the external amenities are notable by their absence. We went in by tram, as the only parking in the area is chargeable.
S. S.
It was such a great idea to place a modern theatre right in the heart of a historic building. The metal structure looks slightly at odds with the interiors at first, but visitors and audiences soon realise that they work in perfect harmony with one another. Theatre productions there often make use of the space outside the main performance area - sometimes set items are on public display, or there are fake trees to wander through. And for performances with a sizeable musical element, an ensemble can be located in a black box, with live music 'piped' into the space. It's well worth a visit, whether you're seeing a performance or just an interested visitor.
T. P.
The melanin markets were beautiful!
M. S.
Excellent venue. Loved the history to the building. Great place to grab a coffee!
P. O.
What a great night. The actors were first rate. I had no idea what death of a salesman was about, but this powerful performance made it easy to understand. The facilities and the staff are also first class. Highly recommend.
B. U.
A beautiful historic building in its own right in the centre of Manchester, the theatre in the round is a great engineering achievement. The plays are pretty varied but always well casted and well produced. There are cafés and a bar open during the day, plus other places for ice creams during intervals. Apparently the ginger flavour is amazing. Worth a look around the building during the day, go back for a play in the evening.
S. J.
It's a great theatre, modern mixed with traditional. Nice café, restaurant, couple of bars & gift shop and cloaks. Decent amount of toilets for the size as well. There's a visitor's welcome desk which is staffed by volunteers who are always very helpful and such a great addition to the whole experience. I really enjoy the layout inside the actual theatre too, even the furthest away seat is only a few metres from all the action so you feel involved in the performance and aren't left watching a faceless dot perform in the distance. The productions I've seen there are always great and just a little bit different (in a good way). Wholeheartedly recommended. Legroom not too bad, but I'm tall and would like a little bit more but it's liveable and still better than most.
T. J.
Fantastic theatre with stimulating productions in main theatre and studio. The building is amazing and an oasis of peace on a busy day in the centre of Manchester. The Rivals bar and restaurant is excellent for pre-theatre meals or just a drink after the show. Also a very good cafe and crafts shop. I love the place!
J. Y.
A great theatre to attend to see some really professional productions. It's also a different experience for some veteran theatre goers as it's high quality theatre performed in the round, a rare commodity due to the high number of proscenium arch stages in the country, and an overall preference in the business.
M. M. (.
Great place too go for different shopping places too eat friendly staff and great service 👗🧥🧤🧣👙🍤🍣🍢🍠🍝🍩🍪🎂🍰🍨🍧🥮
J. T.
It's a beautiful place. Had a lovely evening watching "the mountaintop", it was really good.
a. a.
Nora Dolls house a fantastic play
J. B.
Worth the visit if only to see this wonderful building.
S. K.
Beautiful theatre, must visit!
O. W.
Very good view and breathtaking building
T. W.
Went to see Death of a salesman, in the very top seats. Prices for under 26s were excellent and the facilities were more than adequate. The top seats, while somewhat uncomfortable in the degree to which you have to leave forward, were not particularly bad, I had no discomfort when leaving the theatre. I could also see almost all of the stage, with the direction of this particular production placing almost all key action in the centre, or just off, this was not an issue.
n. i.
The play Hobson's Choice was fantastic. Great entertainment. However the theatre needs to really reconsider access for disabled patrons. There are steps everywhere. Awkward steps in corners. Very few ramps to assist. Disable toilet is too low.
K. A.
Great performances in Death of A Salesman, really held my attention. Love this venue so much! They also offer accessible tickets for those that might need a carer to accompany them, call their box office for details.
B. E.
Probably one of the top theatres nationally. Intimate theatre in-the-round, makes you feel you are in the centre of the action. Great directors and stage managers fit performance of top actors to this unique setting. Never fail to come away, delighted, amused or philosophically challenged.
J. L.
We went to see The Producers and it was superb. Very witty, fast paced and true to the films, which I love. The theatre however was... a challenge. No disabled access to the upper tiers and very cramped, uncomfortable seating. Also £3.70 for a small water and a can of orange! On the plus side the programme was very good and good value at £5.00.
J. L.
Attended both Black Men Walking and Guys and Dolls last week. Both were fantastic, I really enjoyed both events. Black Men walking was thought provoking and fun. Guys and Dolls had all those memorable songs alongside a brilliant cast. Well worth watching.
c. s.
This is arguably the most impressive theatre in Manchester! Built inside the old stock exchange the actual theatre is a modern hive surrounded by beautiful architecture. Most of the shows they put on here are artsy and that fits with the vibe of the place but some are classics. My favourite so far has been Little Shop of Horrors which I never thought I would see in a theatre in the round, it was amazing! The seats in the theatre are comfortable, some are on ground level with varying degrees of height so even those at the back have an unobstructed view. Because of the multiple doors around the theatre the audience gets up close to all of the actors as they exit and enter as well as when they are centre stage. Would definitely recommend everyone to see one thing as you get a completely different theatre experience to normal, fabulous!
J. N.
In the round theatre in the heart of Manchester. It is built into the old Royal Exchange building which is interesting in its own right and open for free public entry. All seats in the theatre seem to have a good view and the quality of the performances is very high. A choice of bars for refreshments.
E. C.
Beautiful space, it really owns its style. Very welcoming to anybody. A great place to have a nice coffee or beer and peruse the gift shop as well as obviously great to catch some amazing theatre and musical performances!
A. P.
Nice theatre to visit and enjoy a musical
S. M.
Just the best theatre in Manchester. I say that large because of the quality of the program.
However, the experience of visiting this theatre is further enhanced by the space. Famously, the pod-like theatre sits inside the an old commodities exchange and they have made the most of this building within a building and the spaces that creates.
Once you take your seat you realise that the theatre is in the round, which means the performance is never stayed, the performers, constantly moving to engage the audience.
My advice, go at the next possible opportunity.
A. C.
The staff are the nicest people I have ever met , they are caring for their customers and want them to have the best experience possible . The building itself is a masterpiece with the last auction of cotton still placed on the ceiling. Overall I recommend to everyone to go see a performance at the royal exchange or at least to walk through while you're in town to see it's true mesmerizing architecture .
R. W.
For those who don't know it, the Royal Exchange Theatre is a theatre-in-the-round, literally in the middle of the old trading hall in Central Manchester. It's an elegant building and an imaginative re-purposing. The theatre itself shows an eclectic mix of productions, from Shakespeare to Sondheim. Today it was a lively production of 'Gypsy' - OK, Sondheim only did the lyrics but it still counts. Rita Jones superb as Rose, Melissa James as Louise ('Gypsy'). Still time to see it!
S. L.
Went to see The Last Days of Troy on 23/05/15. A great venue for theatre. The building itself is beautifully decorated with references back to its history as a cotton exchange. Ordered some drinks for the interval (£4.50 for a G & T) which is reasonable value and they work on the usual theatre honesty policy of take you own and nobody else's. The staff were friendly and helpful. The theatre construction itself its an interesting thing made of scaffolding like materials with the performers on ground level. I sat on the top level and had a great view of all the action, with some actors appearing on the 1st tier at one point (not sure if those not the ground could see them). The performance was nowhere near sold out, not sure if this is typical for the theatre or not but I'm surprised as the tickets were less than I expected (£24) and incredible value for students £6 - less than any film in the city on a Friday night.
A. G.
Small theatre in the round set in Central Manchester. I've seen some wonderful performances here, most recently Gypsy and The Producers. The downside is whilst the stage level seats are good the higher you go the seat become increasingly uncomfortable
M. M.
Set in a magnificent 19th century building this Theatre in the round delivers world class productions of classic and modern theatre. With a shop, cafe and toilets to complete the experience this is place offers a good resting location on a busy shopping excursion.
E. C.
There's a fair few theatres in the centre of Manchester (Palace Theatre, Royal Opera House, Contact, etc) but there's none quite like the Royal Exchange. Unlike traditional theatres on a stage at the front, the stage here is circular, and you - the audience - sit all around the edges of the circle to watch. It makes for a truly memorable experience of the theatre alone, which is helped greatly by the range of fantastic shows that play there. The inside is rather grand and it feels lovely to be in there. Prices are also really reasonable, with amazing concessions for students. It's an unmissable experience at the Royal Exchange, and there have been fantastic performances over the years, of some major plays (All my sons was on last year, currently The Last Days of Troy is playing (with Lily Cole), and an installation around Slaughterhouse 5 is due to be exhibited next week. I would definitely recommend it, especially if there's a play you already know and love - you'll get to see it from a whole new perspective.

Great building, great restaurant, and of course a fantastic theatre.
The architecture of the royal exchange is worth stopping by to stand inside the building. Inside there's a great restaurant that serves good food, there's some craft shops and a bar.
The theatres are fantastic venues and the Exchange always chooses great things to put on as productions. The consistency of great plays is high with very few clangers. The Christmas shows are always great.
The Royal Exchange is an essential part of Manchester.
L. L.
This is my favourite theatre in Manchester. The building itself is beautiful and still retains some of its exchange features from the past. You have to look up to see the wonderful dome ceiling. The theatre is in the round and it's not huge so you really feel part of the production. There are also free music concerts or comedy in the building on a Friday evening. A fantastic place.
A. P.
Excellent performance. A sensitive subject handled very delicately, with a touch of necessary humour
R. K.
An absolutely stunning building inside and out. It was a pleasure to watch a performance on this historic stage. Viewing can be a little restrictive in some locations, and also may not be suitable with some people who have a fear of heights, if you have the opportunity to watch Anything here, do it.
J. B.
Not the theatre, but the cafe for lunch and meeting with colleagues. They found us a quiet area for our gathering and were generally helpful and welcoming.
Food and drink choices and prices about what you'd expect for a Manchester city centre eatery. This one has the bonus of sometimes having the sounds of rehearsals leaking out from the theatre in the exchange hall.
I didn't recognise the (parts of) songs we heard — from what seemed to be a technical rehearsal for the sound set--up. Still, good fun to get those snatches of what might be hits in the future.
L. C.
I love this theatre. I have been many times and sat on different levels, enjoying each level. Theatre in the round based in ine of Manchester's cotton exchanged. Great history.
Plenty of toilets. Tea coffe and bar available and even free water provided in jugs. You can have a browse and buy the jewelery displayed around the venue
P. T.
Only called in for a Good cup of coffee
A. D.
Very friendly staff, comfy seats with good views of the stage area/floor. Bright, clean and welcoming environment. Lovely atmosphere that enables Manchester's heritage to have a new life.
M. C.
A really unique theatrical experience that leaves a lasting impression. Though light on props and sets of a traditional theatre, the performances are conducted in a style that still encapsulates the audience and involves them deeply in the narrative. Clever, charming and a thoroughly enjoyable evening of entertainment.
M. A.
Lovely theatre in the round. We went to a captioned performance, which was useful for the hard of hearing amongst us. It has places to eat/drink and a gift shop which seemed a bit on the expensive side, but good quality.
A. A.
We saw The Producers which was very clever and humorous. We also had a meal at the theater before the show which was very tasty and good value. My wife and myself had no complaints and thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
s. w.
Forgot how amazing this venue is to visit. Saw the barbershop chronicals... was not disappointed. Enjoyed the way the performance was put together. The humour and music kept it interesting while delivering some poignant moments.
K. S.
Went to see Hobsons choice, a modern adaptation of the original, with an East is East twist. Brilliant acting, fantastic show, funny, witty and amazing talent. Loved every minute, well done to the cast and all involved.
R. H.
This theatre is absolutely stunning. The staggeringly beautiful building houses this magical looking performance pod which from the outside could be mistaken for some mechanical invention from the early industrial revolution. A real time machine!
Inside is equally as impressive. I don’t think that you can beat watching theatre in the round, no matter where you sit it is mesmerising. You really do become part of the production - which here, at the royal exchange, is consistently finished at a high standard. Set, costumes and acting.
I recently watched for ‘Around the world in 80 days’ and as always, it was perfectly polished. This theatre never disappoints.
J. T. W. (. T.
Brilliant venue. Very intimate theatre, great productions and friendly approachable front of house.
One of the highlights for me is to discover the innovative ways in which they've utilised their stage space
C. J.
I love this theatre HOWEVER it is not disability friendly. The atmosphere is wonderfull and its like being taken to another world inside but the seating is so uncomfortable and clostraphobic and the disabled toilets arent all that nice. productions i have seen here are amazing the quality of shows are some of the best ive ever seen but if you need comfort and your feet to be firmly on the ground you may have to suffer for the art.
G. L.
Fabulous play with fabulous actors in a fabulous venue.
M. M.
Legendary venue and a Manchester institution. The main theatre always has great productions, a variety of plays and shows, and rarely disappoints. Relatively recently discovered the smaller Studio: terrific value, more informal and usually something a bit different!
M. B.
Manchester's cultural heart a great theatre showing productions you won't see in many other places. There's a great bar and the theatre in the round helps create a great atmosphere. There is also a studio theatre at which they put on smaller productions. Well worth a visit.
M. H.
This is a wonderful theatre space, probably my favourite anywhere. Worth dropping in during the day to check out the shop and bar/restaurant and to marvel at the combination of old and new architecture. Bought a limited edition photo of the Pevril of the Peak from the shop.
H. G.
I'm not generally a fan of theatre but the shows here are particularly engaging and innovative. The in house team make interesting and often ground breaking productions which challenge the audience in the round. Watch out for extreme audience participation...
M. J.
Purchased tickets for West End Story End of April. Lovely Lady named Maria got me a superb deal for 6 Tickets. Beautiful Theatre lovely Cafe.
B. C.
This is a wonderful grade 2 listed victorian building reflecting the massive affluence of its era through size, marble and domed ceilings. Suspended in the centre is a modern theatre. It works and please go both to see how it works and to experience one of the great productions here.
J. D.
Amazing little theatre in the centre of Manchester. A great use of the old Royal Exchange theatre. Great programme throughout the year with really cheap tickets available for students. Arrive early to have a look in the lovely shop!
L. G. m. u. 2. (.
Very nice
J. W.
Lovely theatre in centre of Manchester. Saw the show Sleepy head. Highly recommend for small kids .Very funny .Had a mulled wine in the bar .Brilliant gift shop inside with great cards and wide range of gifts.
I. -. E. M.
Really cool experience. Some interesting plays and discounted tickets for students
c. f.
Brilliant funniest and best production seen in many a year.Magnificent The Producers great musical .Thanks to theatre and to all the performers for yesterday's wonderful show.
My partner is German and she laughed out loud like me throughout.
A. G.
I love the Royal Exhange and really cannot recommend it highly enough. The theatre is unique in it's three dimensional design, meaning that audiences are sat around and above the stage, providing a more intimate and visceral experience. Productions are phenomenonal and take full advantage of the unique stage-space.
Access to the building is shut off when performances or rehearsals are on, however during normal times the theatre offers a plush environment with a well stocked bar, high quality restaurant, and ample seating areas. My favourite thing to do is visit during the day (it's always quiet) and have a good lunch before wandering around it's elegant interior, strolling around the stage or climbing above to the mezzanines & overlooks which are always accessible.
Parking nearby is tricky so please make sure you arrive (at least) ten minutes before the performance as they will lock the doors. The building is wheelchair accessible and you can book a dining experience prior to the show.
In short, the Royal Exchange is very much Manchester's Everyman theatre and is a magical night out.
M. G.
I honestly don't think there's a better theatre in the UK. The shows they pick are always great, and the stage being 'in the round' makes for an excellent and unique experience. You really have to see something here. And no, I don't work for them.
R. I.
Everything I have ever seen here has been amazing. The staff are fab, beautiful building and amazing art.
M. D.
Just back home in North Wales having been to watch the last night of the Producers. Absolutely blown away fabulous performance! First time st this theatre and what a wonderful place it is loved it
C. S.
An absolutely fabulous venue ! Watched "Gypsy" which was awesome
L. S.
My favourite theatre. The old exchange building has been transformed into a modern lively theatre in the round, with a studio showcasing quirky and novel events. Good service at the restaurants and bars.
M. N.
Small, round venue, not the best ventilation - got pretty warm. But nice sound and lighting with entrances all around so there isn't much queuing. Went there for a talk, great experience.
A. P.
Spectacular production of "The Producers". Remember, this musical is based on a film which came out in 1968 - so political correctness isn't high on it's list of priorities. Suspend your disbelief, just sit back and enjoy the song and dance numbers for pure entertainment. Be a smarty, come and join the party !!
L. H.
my favourite theatre ever!!! has some really good discounts for young people too, managed to see an absolutely amazing production of 'the producers' for only £7 in fantastic seats!!!! <3
E. R.
Wonderful hub of creativity in central Manchester. Good for those who enjoy theatre in the round. Do be careful when buying seats as when companies who don't usually perform there, sometimes face the audience the wrong way.
M. F.
A quiet and tranquil oasis in the centre of the city hustle and bustle. Amazing architecture, old and new, a coffee shop and an interesting little craft shop. Calm and relaxing, and the performance space is amazing. Go and see stuff here, or just pop in to unwind, you won't be disappointed.
A. S.
Lovely theatre. Food selection in the foyer isn't great and there aren't enough seats. We ordered food before a show and couldn't get a seat because other guests (who weren't eating or having drinks) were taking up all the seats.
D. P.
Not at all what i expected both the production & the theatre were epic gone was the imagined staid crowd, atmosphere & standardised show format
the show...
There was a light and it never goes out ...a must view... thoroughly enjoyable
O. W.
It's a fantastic building on the inside! Coming from the middle of nowhere and visiting such feats of architecture both inside and out is amazing. There were various places to sit inside also should anyone want to sit down and have a tea or coffee.
T. R.
Fantastic theatre in the round, meaning no-one is very far from the performers. There's also a cafe during the day, and a bar at night. Find a good show, and go.
S.
Love it. Wish we had this where we live
M. M.
A mixture of architecture, art, food and freedom in one place. A wonderful way to spend an evening with family or friends. Only been there once but definitely be coming back again with the little ones.
T. N.
Fantastic in-the-round theatre, set within a sphere and located inside Manchester's beautiful Royal Echange building. Been to a coupke of Shakespearian productions, both of which were first class. Great bar and restaurant facilities serving cakes and snacks, as well as hot meals.
M. J. P.
A very architecturally unusual theatre. A modern building within a classic one. While the original is preserved as a beautiful and ornate institution important to Manchester's history, the theatre itself resembles a giant version of a spaceship's landing craft. Sounds daft, but works really well. With lots of entrances to minimise queuing, it is a theatre-in-the-round on three levels and all seats enjoy an excellent view of the stage. Well appointed with a proper restaurant and separate bar and snack bar, it also has a nice crafts shop along with an upmarket arcade that runs underneath the main building. The performances are generally of a very high standard and often include well established actors in the cast. This theatre has been an oasis of culture for me and my wife since we moved from London to the North-West of England.
J. D.
Such a beautiful building and a brilliant theatre
N. W.
Just see the mel Brooks play the producer's. What a wonderful play in a fantastic theatre. It has been a long time since I have been in a round theatre but this production was wonderfully entertaining. Many thanks to the royal exchange theatre
P. A.
Great venue, very middle class, my opinion is that it needs to reach out to more diverse society (that's if it's not already doing that) performance wise it is a very inclusive style of architecture.
M.
Superb production of Hobson's Choice, highly recommended. Only slight drawback is the loop system did not seem to have been switched on, were later informed you have to specifically request this at the box office prior to the performance after collecting the equipment from the cloakroom
C. S.
It is an absolutely great venue to perform. I was there as part of my chinese liondancing crew performing a two lion traditional wedding dance for a chinese wedding. In the circular theatre hall really fun great atmosoheric venue.
Thanks for having us, from Northern Dragons Martial Arts and Performance Academy.
C. C.
Love this theatre, great productions. Good views from all seating although second row seats of first and second tier are not that comfy. City prices though, so expensive!
G. J.
Used to go here all the time with my gran before she passed. The only time I saw her drink was during the interval of Hamlet. “Might as well have a gin, I don’t have a clue what’s going on anyway.” Bless her xx
J. F.
Great show in the studio (sleepy head) the children loved it, even my 16 month old who never sits still. Cakes in the 'rival' cafe were lovely too.
H. J.
A great place to visit and see, interesting history, an iconic building made all the more fascinating with the theatre quite literally taking ' centre stage ' It's calming, majestic, tranquil and yet there's a buzz created knowing that many famous theatrical stars of stage and screen have appeared there, rising stars too, the staff are very attentive and helpful, nice cafe, restaurants, bar, something for everyone really
T. A.
A favourite theatre of mine and bucket list to perform in the round here, always challenging and engaging shows, and workshops too. Friendly bar and staff, never had a bad experience here x
M. A.
Brilliant event. Easy to get to. Parking tickets cheap if you get them validated at box office. Lots of places inside to eat particularly Rivals restaurant is lovely food.
D. A.
Visited on Saturday 28th January 2017 with my elderly mum. Fantastic performance of Sweet Charity! We got lost and arrived on the last minute causing mum to struggle with the steps. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful, even ensuring she was in her seat before starting the performance! Venue is not the easiest for those with disabilities but contact them beforehand and I'm sure they will do anything they can to help.
T. B.
Reviewing a theatre without reviewing the play is an odd one. The building itself is an amazing space, a huge open room with lots of places to sit and chat or grab a meal before the show. In the centre is a very modern looking, exposed framework round theatre which dominates the entire room yet quietly manages to not look out of place in a 1920s cotton exchange.
The staff were helpful and knowledgeable, the café was brimming with excellent quality tea (teapigs brand tea of all sorts), coffee and cakes and the bar had the usual tolerable selection of beer without being daring in any way.
Try to avoid seats on the second gallery unless you're desperate to see that particular showing, as you can feel quite removed from the action and in some cases even have limited view of the stage which I'm not entirely sure should even be possible for a round theatre.
The theatre has a discount parking scheme with the NCP Market Place car park, which is very convenient and means you get parking for £5 for 5 hours. However, make sure you ask if the machine is working properly before you get it stamped, as it caused chaos on our particular night as the parking ticket machine refused every single ticket. Other car parks also available.
G. C.
My favourite building(s)! The coffee shop is a perfect escape from the corporate cloans found on the high street. The theatre is also such an experience due to its small size and being a theatre in the round.
P. R.
A Tao of Glass - I started by wondering if I was in a seat for the right show and during the two plus hours was taken in so many directions and drawn to so many different emotions by the conversation and design of the actions taking place on stage. In some ways I can compare it to the development of a Philip Glass musical work - so simpIe yet so complex. The matchup between the actions, words and music was perfect. I don't want to go into any descriptive detail because that could spoil the experience for others going to see it but I would compare it in some ways as life changing as the cricket world cup final - you know how you want it to end but you don't want that ending to come because the action onfield is so captivating and tense. The whole cast can be congratulated for a superb show in a wonderful venue.
B. R.
Inside a spectacular old building a mysterious spaceship appears to have landed. In fact, it's a studio theatre where excellent, challenging new and old works are performed. I saw an excellent adaptation of Anna Karenina, which brilliantly used the space. I'll be back soon.
T. B.
I've seen lots of good plays here. All plays are on the "risky" in style but acting is usually good here.
Building wise it is worth visiting/walking round even if you are not seeing. Just look at the celing! Amazing.
R. W.
Converted corn exchange, with some interesting historic parts left in situ. Theatre in the round. Great coffee shop away from the bustle of the city just outside. A few excellent independent retail outlets.
M. G.
Wasn't there for a play this time but as part of a walking tour of Manchester. The tour was a pleasure, fascinating and amusing and disturbing by turns. I will be back to see Gypsy if there are any tickets left.
L. S.
My favourite theatre. So lucky we have this in manchester! Staff are lovely and the plays are great. So pleased that the bsl interpreted shows have now got a live interepter on the circle rather than a tv screen.
J. B.
I've seen many memorable performances here over(blimey) several decades. Always a special experience, and through changes in direction and facilities(always excellent) the in-house standards have never waivered. A treasure that Manchester should be proud of, and one you shouldn't miss.
J. F.
A must visit for any theatre lover. The productions are always interesting and varied and are of a good standard. The stunning in the round auditorium. Is set within a beautiful building.
t. b.
Great theatre space. Brilliant production of Macbeth! Great staff. The whole experience was first class. Thanks to all concerned. X
J. M.
Saw a great production of The Producers here. Good to see how the different companies adapt to a circular stage rather than the traditional theatre layout. Feels very intimate
S. W.
Modern theatre nestled within a beautiful old building, hosting new and established writing. I always love visiting the Royal Exchange - their programmes are well chosen, interesting, and of excellent quality. Thoroughly recommended.
R. B.
Great venue and a part of Manchester history. There are a lot of good theater events to keep an eye out for. Great building and remains of the Royal Exchange.
P. C.
Nice place, unusual setting, good food, afternoon teas good. Only one toilet!
s. a.
Amazing experience . Early bird 09.30 AM tickets for 10£ is such a winner. Hey go get to the queue around 08.45atleast and bro g someone with you to do a coffee and a bacon butty run from nearest shop
D. F.
Good regional theatre with interesting programme. The shows in the main house take place in the round, which adds an interesting dimension to the performances.
Also, the studio provides a great space for smaller scale shows and emerging talent.
i. w.
Watched a street car named desire and a beautiful building, great setting and good views. Got a seat from the returns queue and the staff went out of their way to ensure we could watch the play, great service
C. M.
Always superb directed and top of the range productions. Love the architecture and history of this special theatre in the round, foods not bad either, a great day out.
D. M.
A fantastic venue and an amazing show. Gypsy was a great watch and Baby June was the star of the show! Would highly reccomend!
C. S.
This is a great venue but getting refreshments at the interval is always disappointing. We've just got back from seeing Guys n Dolls, went down to get a drink at the interval, when we eventually got to the front of the line, the guy told us to join the queue ? We explained that we'd just spent over 5 mins queuing, but he still refused to serve us, by this time, the queue was even longer, so we had to go without a drink.
Top tip, either pre book drinks etc or use a different venue.
L. F.
I saw Death of a Salesman here and it was an absolutely wonderful production. The theatre itself is wonderful - spacious and beautifully designed. Staff all pleasant and helpful.
P. N.
An excellent theatre venue, been twice now and loved it both times. It's theatre in the round, an amazing, immersive experience. Hi quality productions.
r. j.
Fabulous theatre in the round - inside a stunning Victorian building. Has a great cafe and shop selling jewellery and home goods. Always very good productions.
J. A.
Holds some awesome events. Great historic building
K. B.
This is a unique theatre in the round, a glass and steel module in a vast historic hall. The company produce a range of productions throughout the year with something for all tastes and they are always first rate.
N. R.
Afternoon tea 🍵 wonderful
R. A.
In all fairness probably the best theatre but also I'm not allowed to rate this anything less than 5 stars because I'm part of the company and I'll be skinned.
H. G.
I'm not generally a fan of theatre but the shows here are particularly engaging and innovative. The in house team make interesting and often ground breaking productions which challenge the audience in the round. Watch out for extreme audience participation...
L. S.
A truly amazing theatre. What a unique building in the heart of the city. Such a fantastic way to watch West Side Story.
n. i.
The play Hobson's Choice was fantastic. Great entertainment. However the theatre needs to really reconsider access for disabled patrons. There are steps everywhere. Awkward steps in corners. Very few ramps to assist. Disable toilet is too low.
J. S.
Watched 'The Producers' . Excellent. What hard work those people put into it. The show was hilarious and just flowed. Prop changes were done with ease and smoothness....altogether a really good show.
A. H.
Always very special to see a performance in the round here. Such a well run theatre space. The Rivals restaurant is great too.
j. J.
Lovely building n interior; plays are decent nothing special. Just visit to the beautiful design..old Victorian I believe
A. E.
By far and away the best pizza in Manchester. Simple and authentic those pizzas are cooked in a proper wood fired oven to order. Prices are reasonable and there is a big discount for takeaway orders for collection.
C. J.
Never been in before but passed in the street many times, my daughter was in a small production and I was amazed how good the building and amenities were. Will definitely be returning soon
O. B.
Brilliant show! Great seats. Food and drink in the private suite was excellent as was the attentive service.
B. N.
A unique and engaging space. Improved over the years with better bar/food spaces. Most shows are of an excellent standard.
G. R.
Just saw Gypsy play and theatre were incredible
M. A.
Fabulous building. Unique theatre. Variius other performance areas. Growing range of bars & food outlets. One of the best places to visit in Manchester.
m. k.
Best theatre in town
J. G.
Beautiful atmosphere to enjoy thoughtful theatre productions. Good bar, food and a beautiful and historic venue. Can not recommend highly enough.
R. N.
Seating is good here. Their website has all the useful information you need to enjoy your night out and find out what's on. Lots of places to eat nearby and good transport links make for an enjoyable night out.
R. A.
In all fairness probably the best theatre but also I'm not allowed to rate this anything less than 5 stars because I'm part of the company and I'll be skinned.
P. S.
Great theatre! I had never been there before. I definitely want to go back to see more of the productions this season.
A. T.
Popped in to the cafe whilst visiting Manchester. Delicious hot and cold food eg small quiche, lamb curry, soup, various sandwiches, panini, toasties, salads. Variety of tasty cakes, and drinks. Very reasonably priced eg soup and sandwich £6.50. Coffee £2. Little Shop to look around in a fairly quiet atmosphere. Will definitely visit again.
C.
A really interesting building , it was my first visit .I did an outside broadcast there .On entering...i felt like I'd walked into history somehow (a good way) sure will visit again xx
J. B.
Awesome building and lovely theatre in the round, staff are very friendly and the show was great too. The cast even chatting to us afterwards
m. h. &. g.
lovely inside far to high up for my liking it made a few of us feel poorly they should show you a view from where you would be seated when booking tickets.
B. D.
Went to the Royal Exchange over the weekend to watch "Frankenstein". Incredible show and an incredible theatre, loved everything about it and will hopefully be returning soon, please note that those parking at NCP Deansgate can have their tickets validated at the box office for a slight reduction in cost on parking
D. M.
A fantastic and old beautiful building within the centre of Manchester there are cafes and bars to have something to eat before or after the shows or if you just want to call in for a coffee one morning or afternoon unfortunately there is limited parking anywhere near St Annes Square but that's just to be expected in the middle of Manchester.
O. W.
Lovely day at races
A. G.
I always have a great night here, the sets are amazing and I love the atmosphere. Banquets are highly recommended for students on a budget.
R. H.
Love the venue. Close to the action and first rate performances every time. Saw The Producers and it was fantastic.
L. S.
A truly amazing theatre. What a unique building in the heart of the city. Such a fantastic way to watch West Side Story.
N. M.
This is a lovely small theatre that has some great shows. There's a nice seating area that you can use at the beginning of the show or at the intervak
J. H.
The architecture inside is quite opulent with marble pillars all around. The theatre is enclosed in the centre. Well worth a visit.
D. R.
Went to see Hobsons Choice & its was brilliant. Well worth seeing if you are in Mcr. Bars available inside in addition to snack venues & in the City Centre where you can continue to party later.
C. S.
Excellent theatre. One of the few 'in the round'. Obviously it depends on the production, but they seem to be selective as I've never seen a bad show there.
J. S.
Saw Lady Windermere's Fan. Not the sort of thing I usually goto see but there was an offer and I went with some friends for £5 each cause the tickets hadn't sold out.
Really cool circular stage so you really feel apart of the action.
Totally different experience to anything I've watched before.
K.
I have a plaque laid in the floor of theatre for my son and daughter in law who both sadly passed away within a month of each other he worked in the theatre as a young man so is fitting i laid plaque there for him i go there regulary to sit and have a coffee with him such a lovely building i love it.
R. S.
Lovely theatre. Good seating, good views friendly cafe / bars surrounding. I enjoyed evening out.
Y. H.
Amazing!! 6 course taster menu by David Crithton of Masterchef fame. Flavoursome, superbly presented, faultless. Follow this talented budding chef. Fantastic experience!
S. S.
This is a nice theatre in the round. However, if you do not like the risk of audience participation like myself then I would recommend sitting on one of the upper tiers.
r. p.
Compact theatre contained in a large building surrounded by 2 cafes a bar and theatre shop.Stage is in the middle and the seating is comfy and allows unrestricted views
A. H.
Always very special to see a performance in the round here. Such a well run theatre space. The Rivals restaurant is great too.
D. R.
Great location and a superb compact theatre.went to the Producers words can't describe how good this show was. Try and get to see it.
R. G.
What an incredible venue, inside an incredible building. This is probably the most intimate theatre I've been to. There isn't a bad seat anywhere.
R. A.
A well produced musical. Great singing, dancing and orchestration. Not all the songs were memorable but a couple of very good ones.
K. Y.
Makes you feel as though you're part of the play if you see an empty seat at the side of you it's because it's reserved for one of the actors who have finished their lines and they will sit beside you and talk to you if there is an interlude
A. M.
Lovely setring as always... really enjoyed the war with tbe newts from Karel Čapek, well done, guys. So different from the book, but the message was the same.. loved it.
s. i.
Great performance of West Side Story. Theatre is smaller than I expected but brilliant experience. 3 floors.
O. S.
Amazing theatre - a unique experience in the round. Chilling version of Frankenstein - very atmospheric with superb performances.
I. K.
Good Midday performance of Macbeth. Can get tickets for £10 if purchased on the day. Energetic performance with well set out scenes.
M. G.
Beautiful Building Good Value food...
Do wish people would not hog tables for hour on computers and coffee whilst bigger groups have come to eat before performances and unable to find a table grrr
A. t.
Beautiful building. Great night out watching the production
M. S.
Great fun
Great shops
Great customer service friendly
P. S.
Excellent performance. Interval drinks not badly priced. Interesting building. Reduced price parking if you park at the nearby NCP on Deansgate.

My favourite theatre...stunning building with an industrial theatre space 'in the round' as a centre piece. Accessible, helpful staff, nice cafe and amazing shows...happy days!🎭
A. M.
Innovative and excellent production of Macbeth! Great characterisation in lead role. Atmospheric staging. Helpful staff. Good coffee!
C. J.
Never been in before but passed in the street many times, my daughter was in a small production and I was amazed how good the building and amenities were. Will definitely be returning soon
E. E.
We went to see Guys and Doll's which was an entertaining show. Seats on row b not that comfortable as struggled to get up onto the high seats plus not a lot of legroom.
P. S.
I love this venue it is an amazing building and the show was awesome too. Reasonably priced drinks and the staff are very friendly as well.
D. L.
Great venue as the in the round format means that a lot of thought has to go in to the staging. Couple that with interesting plays and you have to admire the company.
C. W.
Excellent as usual. We went with friends to see the show gypsy. Excellent performance from all. Loved every minute.
a. g.
went to see Frankenstein here last week. I love theatre in the round. It was very good. Not shocking but gripping all the same
A. C.
Always a good visit.
V. J.
This is one of those unique theatres that has a round revolving stage. This means the entire crowd is faced at some point and makes for some fun theatre and great views!
A. E.
By far and away the best pizza in Manchester. Simple and authentic those pizzas are cooked in a proper wood fired oven to order. Prices are reasonable and there is a big discount for takeaway orders for collection.
M. K.
Excellent venue. Lovely shops with range of goods and different jewellery etc. Drinks available. Good to arrive early before a performance.

S. H.
Best theatre in Manchester
Intimate in the round theatre
Drinks are about the average price for today's Manchester.
If you've never been definitely give it a go you'll be glad you did.
M. P.
Bloody Elle with Lauren Redding. Great performance to breathe life back into The Royal Exchange.

Even if you don't get the chance to watch a show, make sure to get in and look at how the Manchester exchange has been turned into a one-of-a-kind theatre. Directly above the the front doors you can still see a board with the prices of cotton on the last day of the exchange operation
B. O.
A beautiful building that has been refurbished to a remarkable standard. The theatre is amazing and you can just pop in for a peaceful coffee.
D. W.

M. N.
Always have a season ticket. A variety of theatre productions, usually innovative and inspiring. My favourite theatre.
L. M.
Two top-notch theatres in one old commodities exchange (look up in the entrance and see the final day's prices). The larger 400-seater, in-the-round space is where you will find some of Manchester's major theatrical events (their current Hamlet, starring Bolton's Maxine Peake was sold out so quickly that another week was added).
But there's also a smaller 90-seater theatre, The Studio which hosts innovative, new work - some of which goes on to acclaim and awards. Don't forget to check out the Studio programme - you'll find cheaper tickets than the main house, for one thing!
The theatre also awards two prizes: Bruntwood Playwriting Competition and the Royal Exchange Theatre Hodgkiss Award (for 'emerging'/new/early career directors).
(Ladies - worth trying the toilets down by the studio if you're seated around that side of the main stage, queues much quieter!).
M. H.
Beautiful use of the old Manchester exchange building, a very cosy theatre and never far from circular stage. Bar area really nice too.
