I stopped playing my bassoon 20 years ago but for sentimental reasons kept it tucked away. This year I made the brave decision to sell it but had no idea where to start. I have just sold a bassoon through DoubleReed. In the initial phone call, Oliver took me through all the stages and what I needed to do and what would happen. On arrival they gave it a full inspection and recommended the best course of action for the bassoon which was also in my best interest. In this case, it was a full overhaul and that was spot on. Having completed this, they let me know how it had gone, how it was now playing and what would be a fair price for me and the buyer. Because of their knowledge, honesty and integrity, the bassoon sold well and also left me with a good feeling that the new owner had got a wonderful instrument to play. Martin dealt with all the paperwork and finances and the whole process felt completely honest and transparent. Their commission was absolutely reasonable and I would say that when it comes to selling or buying a bassoon I would not use anyone else and take their advice. Martin explained the best way to package my bassoon, arranged pick up and return, seamlessly. Well what a journey! My daughter decided she wanted to take up a second instrument and it was the Bassoon! I knew nothing about them... I could have got one online but it soon became clear that with an instrument like the Bassoon it was not worth the risk. So after looking around I decided to go to the experts. From start to finish, the first phone call to purchasing a lovely Bassoon this week I could not be happier with our decision to go with Double Reed.
The whole family travelled to the headquarters... kids and a dog in toe. The time and attention we received was absolutely A1! In fact we’ve called them at least 4 times as the said daughter dropped the top of the cork grease in the u bend!! We were supported over the phone to solve the problem... what great customer service.
She has now had her first lesson and has practiced for at least an hour a day.. without even being asked! I think she is in love...

My old bassoon had seen better days and was in desperate need of a major overhaul which required a partial rebuild of the bottom joint and also some serious work on many of the keys. I was surprised and delighted by the transformation of the instrument! It looks and, more importantly, sounds like a new instrument after the work Double Reed has done on it. I recently bought a secondhand bassoon from Double Reed and have nothing but positive things to say about them. I used the Try Before You Buy service which was great - I was able to choose what day I wanted it delivered and it arrived extremely well-packaged and in pristine condition. The bassoon had been beautifully serviced by the Double Reed team and look brand new. I was able to trial it for a week which was plenty of time to test it out properly. I ended up purchasing it! Recently received my Heckel 6000 series back after having some work carried out. Am delighted. It was in need of upgrading and the advice I got was excellent. All keys re plated and re padded and silver finger liners fitted, joints re threaded. The bassoon tone is lovely and the intonation is way better. From the moment I met Oliver I knew I was in safe hands. I handed him my bassoon, which had been a large part of my life for 30 yrs, and knew that through him and his company the best possible outcome would be achieved, and indeed it was.
He was able to advise the best approach to selling my instrument using his knowledge of the market to suggest the work that needed to be done to obtain the best possible price and appeal to the widest number of potential buyers.
The work done by his team of repairers and restorers was meticulous, not only in addressing conditions caused by normal use of an instrument of that age, but also in adding keys and holes such that it would exemplify the extremely desirable qualities of richness of sound, typical of Heckels of that era, and ease of playing like that of a “modern instrument.” How I would liked to have played it then!

I procrastinated for months before entrusting my 110 year old bassoon to anyone because it seems to have had quite a hard life and is consequently of a delicate constitution. But after seeing the videos on Double Reed's website where they worked on similar instruments with astonishing looking results, it was duly sent off to Newport for some remedial key work and a general overhaul. It's just come back, and removing the bubble wrap was a genuinely moving experience: it now looks and plays as beautifully as it has always sounded. Just got my old 1960's Schreiber Bassoon back from DoulbleReed after a Major refurb which included work on the leaky bore, some additional keyword, and metal finger holes liners. I’ve been playing on it for a couple of days since its return and what a transformation. The quality of workmanship is incredible, it sounds amazing and feels and responds like a new instrument. I feel so lucky to have stumbled across this company online. I have been looking to buy a Puchner to upgrade from my outgrown student bassoon for some time. By chance I spotted their listings shortly before a work trip to Newport which is a 300 mile round trip from home.
