Went to Ian for the second time to fix a broken neck of one of my guitars. I need to keep them in their cases! He has done another great job. The break is cleanly fixed with a great spray job . Plays as well as it did before with no change of action . Last fix was over ten years ago and that guitar is still going strong, with no movement. Sure this new one will be the same. Fully recommended.

Randall was very informative right off the bat and gave me much reassurance. I could tell right away he knew his stuff and receiving my guitar back after the set up only confirmed this. Not only did he fix it but he also made specific adjustments and even made my guitar look better than when I first bought it! Would 100% recommend.

Ian is totally amazing the best guitar luthier I have used in my 35 year career his knowledge and enthusiasm is endless 10 out of 10 do yourself a favour and give your guitar a treat !!!!!!

I contacted Ian Randell after seeing his web site which was located near me.
I have just bought my first guitar after never even picking one up before and tried learning how to play it. However I noticed that the strings were very high and the pressure of the steel strings on my fingers were causing very painful calluses on top of my calluses.
Ian pointed out the problem regarding the action and for a small price lowered the action and fitted new strings. I have received the guitar back and it is now so much easier to play.
Ian is a very accommodating person who understood my need and carried out the work to a high quality.
Due to Ian’s nature and his professionalism I have now booked lessons with him and am looking forward to my first next week.

FIRST CLASS SERVICE - so I strap my guitar on a Saturday night at a gig some 15+ Miles from home to find my Gibson Les Paul has a "splitting headache", yes the neck was no longing in original condition and had cracked/split from a small drop in it's hardcase. I survived the gig and with a phone call to Ian on the Sunday, I booked my Green RG565 (Pictured: 55 to 60 years worth of history in that picture) for a quick adjustment so that I can gig for the next few months.
Due to the circumstances and time frame, Ian worked overtime for a couple of days to have the guitar back to me by Wednesday night in time for practice on Thursday and my gig on Saturday, this is on top of a diary of students to teach and other guitars on the bench. Now that is dedication and customer service.
This is only half the story - my Gibson is booked in for a repair and after l browsed over a few other repairs (yes Gibson are prone to broken necks) I can safely say I am confident with Ian working on my pride and joy. Throughout the process he was upfront and honest about time frame and cost, he has always given me sound advice on what he can or cannot do along with his opinion on what he would do if it was his guitar. Certain jobs come with certain "warranties" for adjustments down the line etc. (this is dependant on the job at hand, however again, it is fantastic customer service). If he "cannot do something" or genuinely believes he knows some who can do the job better, he will be straight up and recommend someone else, the customer comes first.
I personally know probably half a dozen other technicians and I cannot find fault with any of them, honestly, however I wouldn't trust my guitars in any other hands. I am writing this review in order to tell my story so that other guitarists may feel confident in using Randell Guitar Tuition & Repair.
FINAL THOUGHT - one thing you may not know, Ian taught me some 15 years ago and I have continued to come back to him year after year to set up my guitars, and now I have entrusted him with the task of gluing and repairing my Gibson Headstock/Neck, FIRST CLASS SERVICE.

Since being taught by Ian to play guitar, I have always gone back to him for guitar servicing. His guitar servicing is professional and prompt. He always takes time to discuss any needs, to ascertain the precise nature of guitar remediation. He is inspirational in his love of various guitar playing styles and chatting to him, you can't fail to be engaged by his enthusiasm. I thoroughly recommend him, both as a guitar mechanic and tutor. I gave Ian my Sterling Axis for a full setup based on a strong recommendation and glad I did. The guitar now plays better than the day I bought it and all the issues that were present have disappeared. He was an absolute pleasure to deal with and will be using his services from now on - no more second rate guitar store setups for my guitars. I would gladly recommend to anyone needing his expertise.
M. J.
I was recommended to Ian. I can do regular tweaks/setups but there's only so much most of us can do. I had a couple guitars (electric and acoustic) that needed sorting out and Ian fully sorted them out, so much so, I feel that my other guitars need the same setup. They play amazing, but Ian will make them play and feel so much better! The good thing is, he will tailor the guitar to suit your needs and will genuinely accept the guitar back for any tweaks you feel are needed. It is clear Ian is very knowledgeable and has a great deal of experience dealing with guitars. You will be hard pushed to find a better tech out there! Thanks Ian for the work you put in, we are blessed to have someone with such knowledge and experience in the area!

I have known Ian a good few years now both as a fantastic guitar tutor and guitar tech. I have just got my Martin guitar back from him and it sounds amazing again. He is a complete nerd when it comes to detail and information which is exactly what you want from a guitar tech and tutor. He is also a great guy!

Took my guitar to get fixed today, he spent all day fixing it for me and it was very cheap. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. Will definitely be going to him again if I have any other issues.
P. O.
Randell was so lovely! Called on very short notice for help with my guitar not tuning, he instantly knew how to help and got it fixed within ten minutes for very cheap. He gave me some extra info about potential future maintenance because I had no clue and was just generally very lovely and helpful. Will definitely go to him in the future :)

Ian truly is the best guitar technician you will find. He has set up several of my acoustics (steel and nylon-strung) with meticulous attention to detail and taking my playing style into account. Any guitar will benefit from one of his top setups - both playability and tonal characteristics of your guitar will shine, and the instrument will sing.
To top all that off, I have to agree with several previous reviews in that Ian undercharges for his services. The amount of time and care he gives each and every instrument is simply fantastic, and at absolute bargain rates.
Pay him a visit and you will be a much happier player.

Just completed an intense 3 day guitar tech course with Ian. I searched up and down the country before finally finding and deciding to book with him. All the reviews I read were spot on, as Ian is knowledgeable and passionate about not only the guitars he brings back to life, but also the people who own them. I believe he gave great value for money with the training he delivered. With his considerable knowledge (which he shared willingly) the time spent learning from Ian was well worth the journey down to Plymouth. Once again, Thanks Paul.

Ian gave my strat some much needed TLC and what a difference it has made! Plays absolutely lovely now! Ian knows what he's on about and has tons of experience working with all kinds of guitars. Would definitely recommend to anyone after any form of guitar maintenance! 10/10 results
T.
Helped me sort out a crackling issue with my acoustic guitar very quickly, giving plenty of tips on guitar maintenance to help me keep my guitar sounding great. All in all; very friendly and hospitable, and provides excellent, speedy service!

Had my faulty pickup system in my acoustic replaced by Ian. Got it back today and it really sound's great. He did few little extra bits to it too which has really improved the playability. Extremely happy with the work he has done. Ian is a super genuine guy who has a real passion for the guitar, and music in general. He really knows his stuff. I'm planning on getting guitar lessons from him soon too, in the hope to take my guitar playing to the next level. I highly recommend Ian and will deffinatly be taking my guitars to him in the future.

I cannot recommend Ian highly enough! On two occasions now I’ve needed urgent work done on my guitar because I’ve only been in the country for a few days and Ian has delivered a perfect service both times. He is both extremely friendly and professional. He is clearly a real expert and offers a very fair price for the service he provides. Thanks again Ian, I really appreciate it. Patrick (Faith electro acoustic)

I’ve been one of Ian’s students for the past few years.
I’ve just had both my acoustic guitars serviced and tweaked and they sound fantastic, a joy to play again. He’s always on hand for any support and advice that’s regularly required in between lessons.
Thanks for all your time and patience so far!!👍

Friendly, expert service & quick turnaround. Ian was also available for 'out of hours' tweaks, which I appreciate. He shows an impressive attention to fine details, the tiny things that making playing more comfortable and enjoyable. My new Furch acoustic had left the shop with a set up and so it was already pretty good, but I decided to go for Ian's 'top job' set up alongside a pick up installation. It's now even better, and plays beautifully. Cheers Ian!
M. J.
The top E string on my Tanglewood travel acoustic was buzzing and it was really getting on my nerves. Ian is very knowledgeable and sorted it in an afternoon by placing on a new bone nut, and kindly softened off some of the sharp fret edges free of charge. The price was very reasonable. Now the guitar plays great and I’m really happy with the result. Would highly recommend using Ian’s service if you have any issues with your instrument. Thanks!
S. T.
I've just collected another of my guitars which was perfectly setup by Ian. His attention to detail and honest quality work means I wouldn't take my guitars anywhere else. Once Ian has worked his magic, my guitars are suddenly transformed and I can't put them down as playing them is much more enjoyable. If you want quality work done at a reasonable price by a top bloke, take it to Ian!
P.S. He can also teach you how to do it yourself!
J. K.
Ian recently did a full-set up on my Fender Stratocaster, absolutely perfect job.
Ian will work to your needs, my guitar feels like it has been custom-made to my liking.
The best Plymouth has to offer.
Keep up the good work Ian!
M. B.
Ian is simply the best guitar technician out there, he has set-up, fixed, improved and upgraded my guitars for the last 10 years and he has never once failed to exceed expectations, even after ten years!
If you are a serious guitar player it would be wise to have Ian check over your instrument and go with any recommendation he gives you, it will make a significant difference.
If you are a guitar student, play guitar for fun or are thinking about starting to learn to play the guitar, having Ian set-up your guitar will make playing it a far more enjoyable experience and will stop those fingers aching so much as you'll be able to get those difficult chords ringing out with ease.
Ian also severely undercharges for his services and the amount of time he spends on making your instrument something he is proud to give back to you in better playing condition than when he received it. I recommend you pay Ian a visit, you will not regret it.

Thanks Ian for your fantastic service. I really appreciated the care, personalisation and honesty you put into your work when looking at the fret buzz on my guitar (which it had developed after being imported from America). I will defiantly be back in future, and would highly recommend Ian to anyone looking for an expert you can trust with your guitar.

Took my Ibanez RG 2550e to Ian because of the fantastic reviews. It was playing so badly and needed some real tlc....well what can I say?? I never thought my guitar was this good!!!! It plays absolutely amazingly; haven't really put it down since getting it back and playing stuff I was struggling with, with ease. Great communication, prices, Ian is such a lovely guy and a real professional. Highly recommended.

Had my new lefty Strat set up by Ian. Fantastic job. The difference in playability from factory setup is amazing. As a learner, my understanding of the technical aspects of guitar settings was nil, however Ian spent time to explain what he would do and how this would improve my guitar.
After a previous, very poor shop alteration by someone else, to hand my Spanish guitar to a lefty, have just had it repaired by Ian. Returned with a beautifully hand crafted bone nut, it is once again a quality instrument.
Have now left my acoustic for a set up and look forward to the transformation of an instrument I have struggled with for several years due to its high action.
Ian’s passion and knowledge of guitars reflects in the high standards of work he produces.
Top craftsman. Highly recommended.
J. S.
Ian is a humble and friendly guy with a real attention to detail. He easily blows away what others would call a set up and I've never been disappointed with his work. He exceeds expectations and has done a great job on 2 of my guitars and a mandolin.
H.
I have taken a few guitars to Ian, most recently my Andy Timmons Ibanez and Sigma acoustic, the Ibanez was in for a tweak but the acoustic had Ian's top job the full setup, both came back like brand new guitars. Every guitar that Ian has setup for me play amazingly even if the stock setup isn't too bad Ian will make it play even better.
Ian knows exactly what he is doing, his experience and dedication to providing a great service are what make him stand out as a great tech also he is a top guy. I trust Ian's judgement with any guitar that goes to him.
Thanks Ian
T. H. G.
Ian is a great guitar tec and a great guy! I just had 2 guitars set up by him and they were done masterfully for a great price! Would easily recommend Ian's services to anybody :)
M. K.
This guy Ian Randell is a wizard. Just had 3 guitars serviced restrung and set up. They now play beautifully. Top marks for a fab job well done. Thank you Ian.
J. H.
My go to guitar tech for the last 12 plus years, he is a perfectionist and has a passionate love of his craft, I am a gigging musician and he has set up all my guitars from Rickenbacker to Gibson and refretted my fender telecaster, has also done some small lacquer repairs to perfection..
If you require any set ups or guitar repair, servicing Ian is the man.
And if you feel you require any tuition from beginners to advanced lessons he is active at guitar tuition covering rock, jazz, blues, gypsy and most styles you can think off,,, can't recommend him enough!!!
A. P.
I was recommended by my guitar teacher Mike Baugh to contact Ian for a set-up on my guitar, was not disappointed! Ian took my cheapish Ashton Electro/acoustic which had a high action and uneven neck & made it play and sound amazingly! It makes me sound a better player than I actually am.
I've now purchased a second hand Epiphone acoustic which could do with Ian's magic touch, so I didn't hesitate and have it booked in with Ian.
Really amazing work for a good price! Now speaking from experience, Ian is a top craftsman and will tell you everything he will do to make the guitar sound great!

Had a number of guitars and basses setup by Ian and an excellent job too. I have forgotten the number of players who have picked up my guitar and remarked how well it plays, and even offer to buy it! For me that speaks for itself. Ian truly knows his subject.
T. W.
Just collected my Telecaster from Ian following a full setup. I am extremely pleased with how it has turned out! Action and intonation are perfect. It is a joy to play. Thank you Ian for great comms and great service.
C. D.
I have just picked up my stratocaster from Ian- the second guitar I have taken to him in the last few months. Another top job! The guitar plays brilliantly, feels really nice and now has a great action all the way up the neck! Thanks Ian.
D. N.
Just finished the three day guitar tech course, one word brilliant.
I went in as someone who was wary about doing anything more than changing strings on a guitar to someone who went home and thought nothing of taking the neck off his £500 strat, that's how much confidence the course gives you.
You can tell Ian has a real passion for his work and it shows not only in his work but in the way he teaches (makes sure you're doing things right). I felt that what I was being taught was a bit of a lost art in this modern age.
Ian is a really nice bloke, easy to get on with, he gave me loads of tips about starting my own business and a list of suppliers to get me started, he also supplies you with all the tools you need to get going.
The course is very intense (be prepared for some late nights) but is very enjoyable and moves at a pace that keeps it interesting and if you're not sure of anything Ian is just a phone call away.
You get a lot more than what it says on the tin, believe me.
Highly recommended.

I appreciate Ian's work every time that I pick up my guitar. Every guitar that I buy will go straight to him. Reasonable prices too and a friendly and extremely knowledgeable guy.
G. R.
My average guitar plays better than guitars costing 3x the amount after Ian set it up. Would not think twice about using his services in the future.
Thank you!
M. E.
First class work by Ian. I am a novice player, but with his set up experience, my guitar has become an easier instrument to play. A fair price for such good workmanship,
O. C.
Fantastic guitar teacher with a wide range of knowledge to teach. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to learn or advance their playing!

Ian perfectly set my guitar the action is now the lowest I have ever had on any of my guitars, Great price for a set up so good, highly recommend!

I’ve had a Guitar for most of my life but only intermittently played it; generally speaking, I’ve always got to a point where I fail to get beyond. No surprises – the F Chord.
Eventually, I admitted “defeat” and enrolled in some lessons. Having lessons and calling it “defeat” is such a stupid way of thinking but I digress. My Tutor took one look at my Guitar and confirmed it wasn’t my ability that was stopping me reaching the F, but the way my Guitar was set up – or wasn’t being more to the point.
He put me in touch with Ian and couldn’t speak highly enough of him nor recommend anyone better so in short order, I met up with him and my Guitar in tow. On first meeting Ian, you immediately get the impression that you’re onto a winner with him, his devotion to the instrument really comes across and on handing over my acoustic, it had his undivided attention. His initial assessment of the instrument was thorough and that was it, a week later it was ready for pick up.
He asked me to give it a go and see what I thought, naturally the first thing I did was play an F and wow, what a difference! Where before when I barred a chord, I really had to press my index finger onto the fret board with a lot of force, now it just needed to sit in place and a doorway just appeared in the metaphorical musical brick wall which I’ve been stuck at for years. My Guitar isn’t a particularly special guitar, not an expensive or a “named brand” one but it’s ok for what it is and can hold a tune. After Ian worked his magic on it though, it sounds absolutely stunning; I can’t believe it’s the same Guitar! I just love playing it, I find it hard to put down most of the time and I laugh at how Bar Chords were such a struggle to play for all those years.
His work comes fully guaranteed but although I’m no expert in this field, I doubt I’ll ever need to go back and say something’s not right, his work is just too good.
Fully recommended, I have nothing but praise for his work. My guitar playing has improved no end and it’s down to him and my continuing lessons but without having a guitar that I absolutely LOVE to play, I doubt my lessons would be such a success.
M. T.
Gave Ian my nice guitar, he returned a real guitar. "Played it 'till my fingers bled!!!! " Great job ,thanks buddy, will no doubt use you again. Paul T.
